"Well so James you've spent a fair amount of time in Birmingham where the white sox's AA team plays. Can you paint a picture of what Barons Baseball? Looks like the Birmingham Barons civically. That Michael Jordan was playing for their like very deep seated cultural institution. They were a Negro League team decades earlier. But it's a small business. It's not something that is situated for stars at all. I mean Minor League teams. Don't presume that anybody really knows who's playing on the team. You don't go to a bar. Just because they have vodka you go for the atmosphere and stuff like that so they don't really assume that you're gonNA know and anybody who's starting on the team or even meet necessarily paying attention to the game so it's just like they were up against the task that they were in no way suited for just inherently because they're Miley team collected some really great stories about Michael. Jordan's time in Birmingham so the barons find out that Michael Jordan is coming to town. Take us back to that moment. Well they're kind of all suspicious like the ticket sale that something is going down like every time there president. Bill hardcopy like. It's a phone call his office. They're listening to like if either is going to be some exciting yells or something like that and he calls a staff meeting on the morning of actually March thirty first and he's telling them he said. Hey it's going to get to be as zoo here. You know as soon as the word gets out. He told me he has a window. That's kind of overlooking this huge mass parking and so they have this huge empty lot. There overlooking everybody's gathered in my office. It's only a staff of like twelve people and all of a sudden someone said. Oh my gosh look. And we started to see cars coming into the parking lot. And these waves. These hordes of people dislike converging on the stadium. And they're like well. Our lives changed forever cars coming into the parking lot and they never stopped. I mean the phones never stopped ringing. People just read to the ticket office and it was a zoo a wonderful zoo. Jonathan Nelson is. He's been the GM of the parents. The last fifteen years but he was a young guy in group ticket sales you know normally calling corporations and trying to set up like a weekend events. Next day I showed up to work. Lon out the door People wanting to buy tickets merchandise. Whatever was because the news hit the press. That Michael Jordan was going to be a baron and at that point it was certainly the end of the world is we knew it. Cough is talking about how they have six business lines which had never been an issue for them before but all of a sudden all the marine constantly they literally can't make an outside phone call even if they want to get an outside line in our office because as soon as you hung up with one person you know you just pick up the phone to down outside number and someone would be on the line asking for tickets literally not being able to talk to anybody outside. The building is a little bit of a problem so he heads out to his car. Because it's nineteen ninety four. I had to go out at is what was in Public Carson. If you can believe basically begs the telephone company like you need to double the number of lines. We have in our office because we can't literally all we experienced this incoming calls demanding tickets so we need you to address as soon as possible well and during that Summer Major League Baseball Strike Shuts down the ninety four season. And there's no joy in Meadville or any other baseball city but all hope is not lost. Labor and management went back to the bargaining table. Today for the latest on. How talks are go stretch? Their barons games are suddenly being televised on. Espn this is the only baseball that we have so Birmingham becomes suddenly a destination for celebrities. Who Want to see Michael Jordan on the diamond right? I mean that was something that was really happened all year. You know somebody would call me. He Charles Barkley was to come to the game. Do you have a place for you know to sit and we test to screen you. Don't find a place for dissent. He came over so often that they had them in the announcing booth. That basically had an irregular location that they would file to him. They let him in the team. Sweet and just watch the game. Their Bills Linebacker. Cornelius Bennett from Birmingham. So he was. There pretty often stuff like Chris Chellios. Who was the star of the Chicago Blackhawks? Taking the batting practice. You never knew what random stars would show up. Kenny Rogers. The recently deceased country music entertainer showed up one night. He's doing a concert in Birmingham and like all all the staff thrilled like. Yeah absolutely. Let Kenny Rogers on down and then they realize that Kenny Rogers travels with a fifteen percent entourage. And that's a little bit more than they plan to be. I think Wrigley Field is like the most Krampe majorly clubhouse egg remember at least pre renovation basically every minor league clubhouse especially like in the early nineties was the Wrigley Field's visitor locker room or smaller. So the idea like Kenny Rogers. Fifteen people cramming into that say hello to Michael Jordan. Meanwhile while every fan or volunteer clubhouse attendant is trying to get a hold of talk to them or just his presence and all the players are geeked out and trying to get everything signed by him at any moment. It's easy to imagine it being chaos social. He was not achievable in any any form. It was one guy that showed up to Quainton Scottie. Pippen and you know he got through at that point. You know obviously a minor league operation. We had to adjust they hire so much new security personnel. And they're really kind of you know proud of the degree that they have these different levels set up because in covering league baseball. I have to tell you. I've definitely just walk straight into a stadium without being talked before they were about three levels to get down to the clubhouse and someone who basically just said I'm Scottie. Pippen and was really tall got through two levels and finally when he got to the clubhouse doors we finally recognize that he did not look like Scottie. Pippen was indeed dot Scottie. Pippen you'd never knew what was going to happen. Any given the first game of the season they have one hundred and fifty meter credentials. Their normal media for opening night would be like six people so they basically move out of banquet room just to have a press conference Michael because having everybody down to do clubhouse accidents would just be insane and even to have him get out after that basically security has the blackout like every step of his bath. I just remember visibly some of these loading up the bus times were over. A thousand people like to let thirty at night lining the way just to see him. Walk the six feet between the door and get on the bus and hope that maybe he'll stop and sign autographs and the greatest you know. Joyce Oglesby we see how cool it was for the other players because you know it was like they were truly of the Major Leagues. You saw a major leagues would be like and maybe even something above that. We also talked to the barons radio announcer. Who told you about time that there was a pickup hoops? Game and Jordan actually played Kurt. Bloom has been the real announcer for the baron's for almost thirty years. Now and they finally get to the point where I guess he's feeling antsy enough about it but Jordan wants to play a game. Pick pickup. It was August three three subdivision about a mile two miles from the Hoover Matt which was where we used to play but of course the idea back in the ninety four. The idea that Michael Jordan even basketball court would be such a big story that this is something he doesn't talk about until the season's over and really any kind of public manner until he's gone back the basketball because it would just be like well it was was risking. Injury was itching to get back to the basketball. It would just be a whole thing and so to do it. They go like two miles away to this little quiet subdivision and bloom Zahn Jordan's team. The ball comes to him to open up the game and I should've tech and Michael Jordan basically gives them a look of like. Do you really think I need to screen to get by you. Know the lead ticket. Sales Guy of the Birmingham barons like he just kind of waves kirk blue mops like you know. I don't really need that. Cb and you take a step back and drains a thirty foot three pointer and that's kind of how the game went from there on out. You want to tell your friends like Y'all scored in that game. I had a layup. Where rebound or something? So so in my case in the statute it said screened or pick. One Michael's career in baseball is really polarizing topic. A lot of people consider it to be a massive failure. Others say it's just amazing what he was able to accomplish. The Guy Hits you owe to. W What did the people you spoke with say about? Jordan's time in baseball. His baseball career is a failure in the sense of like it had no chance any realistic standpoint. We talk about prospects being too old or being past the point where you can really expect there to them to develop age like twenty four. Twenty five Michael's thirty one by the time. He appears in Birmingham who miss a year or two of injury of having missed too much development time ever catch up. He's missed what fifteen years something insane. So the fact that like double a league where prospects get stalled that all the time or is usually seen the jump from single-a to double as seen as the biggest jump. There is other than going from triple majors. The fact that he's not just getting blown off the field the fact that he gets hits at all or that he shows improvement airy hits to fifty in the Arizona Fall League after that is kind of an astounding accomplishment. That really speaks to the idea of this guy. Just really being a transcendent athlete and having just so much elite hand eye coordination that he's able to just really hold his water on. I mean Kurt Bloom. Who is very much optimistic? On Michael's career was talking about the fact that maybe he could be a back about fielder in the majors is work ethic is focused. His dedication was just off the charts. And where do I see him? I think that if the baseball had not been in a walkout situation that sometime in nineteen ninety five I think he would have started year Nashville and then at some point he would have been called up to. Chicago is the fourth maybe fifth outfielder guy. He could run. Play some defense and look at some point he was going to go to. Chicago and catching fly balls in late innings and steal a base for it well ultimately. This experience was extremely stressful and exciting for the people who ran the barons at the time. If they had the chance. Do you think they do it all over again? A baron still have a once per season where they wear like space jam inspired jerseys promote off Michael Jordan over quarter century later Willie mays and Sach's page of all places. The Barons Ready Jackson. Michael Jordan is the biggest mural that they have in regions field. Because that's the one that's what people associate with their first name that they come up with just realize the like it's not on an even similar planet as far as like popular like you don't know a true what true nationwide mobile superstardom looks like until it's really just on the ground and Stereo in pretty much. Most of the nation would not know the Birmingham barons existed. Even though they've been around for one twenty five years if Michael Jordan played for them for five months. That's kind of wild. Such a rich cultural tradition is really invisible compared to just one superstar. Well James Thank you so much for joining us. Thanks for having. "Life right now is a lot it forces us to always be on and even though we're all stuck indoors it can still feel like everything is go. Go go but every now and then it's really important to stop and take a second to chill and when I need to take that moment my favorite way to do it is with a mountain cold coors light of course is the only beer that's literally made to chill cores. Light is brewed with a three step cold process. It's called lager. Cold filtered and cold packaged and the mountains on the bottles and cans. Turn blue when your ears cold that way you always know when it's time to chill coors light was born in the rocky mountains of Colorado in nineteen seventy eight. It's light refreshing and only one hundred into calories so when you need to hit the reset button just open coors light you can have of course delivered you by going to get dot coors light dot com to find local delivery options near you and remember to enjoy a coors light responsibly. Course brewing company Golden Colorado so sudden you work with the Lotte giants who plan Bussan In South Korea. What has the team been doing to prepare for? This delayed. Start of the season for the team. We've had players play a bunch of scrimmages and in the time of uncertainty but with a good gut feeling because start the season at some point used to have to keep your players shape and get ready for the season basically. It's like an extended spring training. We just heard from the athletics. Trent Rosecrans about the atmosphere at K B O Games. He described as this incredibly lively seem. But I wanted to ask you specifically about the law giants team song. Bussan seagull is a song that very close to their heart of people. Living in Bussan goal is an animal. That's very symbolic to the city of Bussan because the city is right by an ocean and we see a lot of general in our everyday lives we used to be able to play the song In our home games and people would just sing it up Like really love. So you've been playing training and exhibition games with no fans recently. What's IT GONNA be like to play a regular season game in an empty stadium? Described that atmosphere? It just feels a little bit off but you know when you look beneath that. They're still baseball. Being played and these guys are professionals with a common goal which is winning and at this point Especially being aware of what's going on around the world as look to have access to seeing baseball in for me. What is the plan to protect players and stadium and Ballpark and team personnel? It's mostly the basic precautions stuff. Players and staff members getting their temperatures taken as much as possible. Like when I walk into our stadium. There's a Serbo camera that checks my body temperature. Just walk in. If my temperature's too high it's going to beep and then I'm going to have to get my temperature. Take a manually. Sometimes I bring a hot coffee a stadium. It just beams. I'm like oh no it's not made it's. It's the coffee so to clarify that a few times players have to wear masks Cohen. They're not on the field or Dugout and umpires on the field to wear masks and gloves and so do the bat boys and girls but in general players are able to live their lives. It's not like they're being quarantined altogether in a hotel they just come from their home and how our players responding to these measures players were their word that if one of them gets infected than the. League is in jeopardy. Personally I've been trying to limit my interaction with players myself just like not going to the club and stuff like that so it's not a one individual for it's like a group thing where if you need to be there you'll be there but if you don't if you really don't have to be there just don't don't risk anything. How do you think the league will know when it's the right time to allow fans back? In the ballpark funds are an indispensable part of the league. And I do think we are hoping to be able to let them soon. But obviously reading the situation is very important and say takes the president's what they will probably do is select the target date where they can fill in a small portion of the stadium and see how it goes from there right now obviously. Everyone's happy that the baseball is going to be back. But I think people also that they need to take precautions to make it safe for everyone and that's been the common theme of this country Ever since the offer Kaplan just it's been about sacrificing the individual freedom for the betterment of the whole as you and the giants maccabee. Oh Start Your season. Do you have any advice for Major League Baseball on the shirt? If I'm in a position where I can give an advice to a multibillion dollar length but if I were to I think you'll be the best if the major league baseball listen to the scientists take as much precaution as needed and take actions. That would be beneficial for the group as a whole and when I say a group it's not just the league it's also for the general public. We listened to our government. We listen to our scientists. It's all about the public safety but at the same time the League has been buried assistant and keeping a hundred forty four game season for every team and I know that there's been a little bit of a public backlash on that from the teams managers because one hundred game takes toll on a lot of players and so forth. The League has done what they could do in order to make it beneficial both in financial side and for the public but I think given on the actions taken so far. It's much more about the public safety and safety for our players. What is it been lake to have your first year in a job like this amid a global pandemic? Well if I ever write a autobiography this has got a chatter to. That's for sure that to be on call. I'd have to be on my toes just to see if there's anything do anything that I can come up with to help our team out on. Lastly the giants had a rough season last year. What is the team done to make sure you turn it around for the twenty? Twenty Sim will always river by first day of work here. It was October. I it also happened to be the last game. Home Game Over a season last year we were the last place team and there were a lot of people in this stadium. One emotion that I felt was that it was it was not really a happy asthma. Civilised kind of sad but at the same time I couldn't wait to see what we can improve and do from here and you know what we had some solid core players. We have some of the best bats in the league. We have some really good pitching talents and also high ceiling prospects that we've been working hard to develop and be able to contribute to our big team and you know this team had a two thousand nineteen. No one's going to deny that but I think the future is deputy looking quite bright knowing that we're on the right track of we know where we're heading to. Well Good luck this season and thank you so much for joining us. No problem thanks for having me on you can read see. "That ends up creating a damper on your ability to sustain interest in a product that requires three years of continual investment. What does the demise of the xfl mean for the future of alternate football leagues in the country idea? We mean nothing but I. I don't think that that's kind of the way the world works. I think that even knowing that the xfl was most likely done under by something well outside of its control pandemic people will see. Hey these two leagues year after year the AFL started couldn't finish their season and then folded as a result. I broadcast partner. I'm not comfortable. Bumping shows off of my primetime slots in order to feature and sign a contract with the team or a league. That is not going to be able to fulfill its obligations So I think it's GonNa make broadcast partners more wary. I think it's GonNa make it very difficult. For investors to invest in fund. The capital needed to start a sports league even though I think the fundamentals of the NFL we'll probably find. It's much easier to kind of see the result and say. I don't WanNa do that than it is to try and project the potential and say I want to take that risk again round. Thank you so much for joining us. "We're joined now by Oakland Announcer Jim. Brock Meyer Jim. Thank you so much for joining us. How are you handling life without baseball right now? What does social distancing look like for Jim Brock Meyer? I'm not handling it. Well I've gotten to the point now for example a complete game. That's when you spend all day in the same pair of sweat pants. Change THEM. A ground ball. That's when you curl up into a little ball while weeping on the bathroom floor so I'm making my own baseball fun. This is the ideal environment for baseball. Baseball was in its golden age back when people literally had nothing to do three and a half hours they just flew by because you're alternative activities. Either reading a book or getting polio. Now here we are again. There's no baseball and instead I'm just. I'm stuck at home in this endless. Back and forth between apocalyptic news and well online pornography so not a lot of choices over here. we'll Jim you know you've always been very outspoken as an announcer about the people in charge. How do you think the people in charge if baseball have handled all of this? Well I think that Professional sports organizations have done an amazing job. I really do a lot of people did not realize just how serious Gerona virus was until there was no sports. It's the most that Major League Baseball has done to affect public health since Given the entire roster the eighty six minutes medicine committee and who knows how many potential infections they stop there so this is a big coup for baseball. We've seen other sports announcers you know like Joe Buck. Use this time at home to just call play by play during Everyday Life. But you kind of already do that. Are they? Just kind of stealing your stick and also I know that you have you have some issues with Joe as well. I'm trying to have some sympathy for Joe Buck right now. He's dealing with not having work for the first time like ever in his life. I mean the man would literally announce anything from Children's golf tournaments to competitive dog eating so I understand that he's desperate personally. I'm quite used to being homeless and unemployed. That's my wheelhouse so if Joe needs to borrow some of my tools in order to not have a mental breakdown. I'm I'm GonNa let that happen. I feel like one day Joe. Buck is going to look back at this time in his life and she one set of footprints in the sand because this is carried him and his his weird Marionette lack buddy before all of this corona virus stuff baseball was already dealing with a major scandal with the Astros signed stealing scheme as an announcer. What's your reaction? Been watching that whole thing unfold? Well it's been very disappointing to a baseball person. But not not all that surprising. It was bound to happen scandals after all. Baseball's most hallowed traditions. I mean the black socks and steroid use and the angels pretending that they actually play in Los Angeles. Baseball's America's pastime and lag. America baseball has an UNCANNY ability to keep surviving in pretending. Like it's mistakes just never happened so this will sort itself out now. All I hope is that someone properly sanitizers the baseball before throwing it at the Astros batters. That's all I hope just through clean baseball's there you know Jim. Thor's there's so much uncertainty right now in the world and in sports and we don't know wagner or even if we'll ever get baseball back the season what words of wisdom do you have for fans who are are feeling loss right now without the comforts of baseball folks precious remember. You can get through this. We can all get through this. You have the skills. If you're a baseball game you know how to have hope. Even in times it seemed hopeless. Especially if you're a fan of the Baltimore I mean you know how to survive with limited human context as you would know if you've ever been one of the twelve people attending a Tampa Bay rays game baseball fans. We are more ready for this than anybody. And at some point game we love with and we'll get back to being very very very mad. It useless so we have that to look forward to I look forward to it very much. Jim Brock Meyer. Thank you for joining us. Thank you can be the always a delight. Here are some other stories. We're following at the lead in yet. Another head-scratching move for the Texans. Puzzling off-season Houston traded for wide receiver. Brandin cooks sending a second round pick in this year's draft to the La Rams. The Texans of course are trying to fill the gaping hole left by trading De'andre Hopkins to the cardinals for running back David Johnson and two picks the rams will reportedly take a twenty one point. Eight million dollar cap hit for cooks while Houston will pay him. Eight million dollars guaranteed this season. The Athletic Shield Kapadia grades. Move a D for the Texans. The only reason it's not an F. He writes is because they already set that floor with the Hopkins deal. The fifty seven th pick was frankly a lot to give up in a draft class. That's deep it. "Who go seek medical attention media the. There's no reason to way Oscar. But that's not what Dr Anthony Fauci has often said. And he even mentioned this in his interview with Steph. Curry is somewhere right. Now gets flu. Light centers of fever aches and bit of off. The first thing you do is stay home. Don't go to emergency room because then you might be affecting his own with a physician a nurse or a healthcare provider yet instructions from that what to do and if available you can get a test but the critical issue is don't flood the emergency rooms. Stay at home. If you really are obviously seriously ill then you gotta go quickly there. But if you just have aches pains and fever stay where you are the contact your physician just curious about your thoughts on the potential for athletes trying to do good. And maybe you know involuntarily or accidentally spreading misinformation. They need to be careful. It's interesting because you can watch these videos from all these different athletes it's going to be a PSA type message. Somebody jumps on twitter. Instagram and an athlete tells you to wash your hands. Keep your distance and that's positive and we've been talk a lot about the value of that but you can also tell that you know in. This is a good thing that they've they've been coached. They've got somebody in their ear telling them what to say telling them what's right and what's wrong from a medical standpoint. But you're going to have slip-ups Lebron James was talking about covert nineteen and was telling everybody to stay safe and take care of themselves but he kind of had a passing comment about how you know if he was a kid growing up in a tough neighborhood in Akron Ohio that his mom would not be here in this stuff about staying in a big show as out of my house gave him nerves in normal times. It's maybe a charming relatable story but right now that's not a good message to send out so these guys and these women to have to be careful. You WANNA HELP. But you can hurt if you say the wrong thing. Suzanne what are your big takeaways here? About the role that pro athletes can and do play in the public response to this pandemic. "So Jason. Obviously Major League. Baseball is in a unique position compared to say the NBA in the NHL Because the season hasn't started yet. How are the challenges? Facing baseball different. Yeah that's the most fundamental difference is at. The season hasn't begun. No one knows when it'll begin. Baseball has to figure out how to play a season and that's a gigantic challenge. When you've got so many questions and really have no starting line let alone a finish line. Baseball's different in many ways There are many more games in baseball season. Baseball is played outside in large spaces. The other sports are played inside in more confined spaces. Baseball has this extensive minor league system and thousands of people thousands of players work and play inside that minor league system. That's not an issue in any other sport as a New Yorker. I'm always really hesitant to make this comparison but does any of this remind you at all when the League halted play after nine eleven. I think there are two ways similar. Our lives are different in some really powerful way and baseball doesn't matter as much sports doesn't matter as much because our lives are changed and there's so many more important things that we all have to grapple with and because of that kind of brings about the second way is everything has to stop. Everything has to stop in sports for reasons that had nothing to do with sports. It's highly unusual with nine. Eleven with Corona virus. These events are powerful and beyond our ability to control them. And so we're all just trying to assess what is our place. What is our role? What is our timetable? What is the meaning of sports at a time like this? Those are big complicated global questions. They're not the kind of questions we usually debate and a lot. It's a lot different than the kind of stuff we're used to about in our world and in the short term. What could this mean for the relations between the players and the League? When you don't know when you're gonNA play when you don't know how many games you're GONNA play. The answers to the questions are very different. Surface time determines everything ups determine salary helps determine freedom. You know Wendy become a free agent. You know the dodgers trading for mookie Betts and then for one year and then not knowing if they're gonNA play fifty games this year. These are really critical decisions that have to get hammered out. If they can't reach an agreement on these issues that is satisfactory to both sides and again we're talking about issues like who gets paid how much they get paid. How Service Time? We'll work it. If if that process doesn't lead to an agreement the players are happy with it. Just hardens the tensions and hardens those divisions. Were already there and thinking about this long term. The CBA is up next year. There's been some talk for a while now about a possible strike. What kind of impact might this delay have on those negotiations? A labor deal involves a totally different set of issues and circumstances. It's big it's it's cumbersome it's complicated and it's hard to hammer out. I still think that the odds of this getting done smoothly without a serious threat of impending shutdown. Those odds are really long. These are two sides. That don't agree on a on a whole lot. And so the danger here is that whatever agreement gets hammered out to address this situation. Leave some lasting scar. If the sport has zero revenue are player's GonNa get their full salary. I don't know the answer but that's why this is such a difficult agreement to reach again. There's a possibility that this leaves lasting scars with one side of the other more likely the players than the owners does. President trump declaring a national emergency affect player contracts? It potentially does just because there's language in those contracts that says in the event of a national emergency the clubs have the right to not honor these contracts to not pay the players. I don't think there's any scenario in which players will get paid nothing but there is potentially a scenario where players get paid a fraction of what they're normally used to earning but if there is no season or a a fraction of season and revenues therefore are zero or a fraction of what they normally are owners would expect players to work for that same fraction. And that you know that's potentially divisive issue to say the least Jason. How many games do you think realistically we could see if baseball this year? That's almost an impossible question to answer one sixty two cap more likely. What one hundred eighty fifty. I don't know and when you talk to people inside the sport who've really thought this through their concern in their planning to play as many games as they can play but they're real preparations being made for no season at all I someone what the chances of that were. And he said I don't know if they're seventy percent or ten percent but they're not zero. I was talking to one person in baseball. I use the phrase when we have this under control and this person stopped me and said you know that under control means there are no cases so just imagine this scenario. Okay we at least get the situation relatively stable in say San Francisco Dallas Atlanta New York. But there are still cases of the virus in. I don't know Kansas City Pittsburgh Washington. You remember every team has to be able to play not twenty four teams not twenty seven twenty nine teams. So I know baseball will be played again some day. Baseball will matter against some day. I take heart in that. But when is that day well finally? Jason? What will you be doing during this extended? Off-season is that what this is i. I've covered baseball long enough that I realized that. Sometimes you wake up in the morning thinking you're gonNa write about baseball and talk about baseball and then life happens. Life gets in the way. And so what do we do in those moments? You know. We're still gonNA tell stories but we're going to tell different stories and I think that's our job now? It's all completely changed. Because of the circumstances that we find ourselves in as a country there's no roadmap now we have to think about sports and think about life in a totally different way. But you know what that's what we do and we're going to do it and it's important that we do it because we need each other now more than we've ever needed each other and if our role in all this is to help keep everyone that we know and care about connected in whatever way we can then we're still doing something valuable. It's just something really different while Jason. Thank you so much. I hope you stay safe. I hope you stay connected. I hope hope we keep hearing from you during this time. Thanks to you. Stay well and stay in touch. You can stay connected with Jayson Stark and follow his baseball coverage at the athletic dot com. Here are some other stories. We're following at the lead the NFL offseason wheeling and dealing continued on Wednesday as the Jacksonville. Jaguars agreed to trade quarterback. Nick foles to the Chicago bears for a fourth round pick. The former super bowl winner will now compete with quarterback. Mitch Trubisky for the starting job in. Chicago might suspicion. Is this nick. Foles IS GONNA wind up being a starting quarterback for the bears Chicago bears. They're letting you know that right now. Nick foles show sooner rather than later. So you need to prepare elsewhere for Broncos cornerback. Chris Harris Junior agreed to a reported two year deal with the Los Angeles chargers while Pro Bowl Safety Malcolm Jenkins is officially out of Philadelphia and back with the team that drafted him the New Orleans saints down. In Atlanta the Falcons pride edge rusher Dante Fowler away from the Los Angeles Rams with a three year deal and the Carolina Panthers announced that the team is releasing safety. Commissioner Adam. Silver appeared on sportscenter on Wednesday to discuss the impact of Corona virus on the NBA. Silver noted the important and delicate role that NBA players play in the discourse around the disease. Donovan Mitchell people see him on social media or he's done public service announcements for US reminding people of the protocol when he says. Hey I'm good healthy. We got to. We have to be careful that other young people don't see that and say he tested positive. It's no big deal. Silver also defended the League against criticism from New York City mayor. Bill de Blasio. Who set on twitter? That he didn't understand how an entire NBA team. The Brooklyn Nets could be tested before quote critically. Ill patients silver said. The League was following the advice of public health officials and in a bit of inspiring news. Where about half the beers? I've been trying to drink the baby. It's been a long time because what do we do. We had five and in a couple of strange strange twists. Police were involved in a high speed chase right along the parade route that ended with two suspects being arrested. "And so Mike when we think of professional boxing you know most people don't typically think of Saudi Arabia. How did the fight end up there? There was a big bidding we'll bidding match for this fight. It was. It was between Principality Stadium in Cardiff Wales. which is a Dome Stadium? The around ninety thousand and before that there was talk of poisoning the Madison Square Garden. But at the last moment. Eddie hearn promoter. Josh was promoter received eight another twitter. The this was from Prince Khalid in Saudi Arabia. Saying that he he really wants to bring the fight here and Eddie admitted that is actually rooted. I kind of dismissed it. There's been so much talk over the years of a FICO means you buy or other places in the Middle East and it's always has been out there to kind of dangling and Mike tells a little bit about this Unusual stadium that they've built. It's actually on the site of UNESCO heritage location. which is I think there's a little will be more than eight hundred in the world? They built this in around six weeks. It's crazy it's fifteen thousand seats. I was there today and it's beautiful. It looks like there was a great sight. Sight lines all over the place giant video screens on all four sides should be a great setup for the fight and the crazy thing is part of being UNESCO heritage site you. I can only use it for six months. So they're going to have to tear down afterward and has the build up. Felt different in any way compared to other heavyweight bouts that you've been around it lines up with a a lot of other big fights in boxing war. Of course there was the rumble in the jungle between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali was Zaire Africa. You had the Thrill Manila One of the greatest fights of not the greatest of all time that was Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier and of course Eddie Arabia's paying a ton of money to bring this fight here I've heard anywhere from forty nine to sixty million. So wow this means a lot mike. What do you think is at stake for each of these guys? Let's start with Andy Ruiz. What's at stake for him? Everything if if he loses you know people are GonNa say he was just it was a one hit wonder he was a fluke and he said that he really was really motivating him as he wants to shut up all the doubters I because he knows everyone's still doubting him but if he wins everyone's going to be become has become believer and I think he has a chance to be a real legitimate star. Two possibilities are analyst analyst him if he wins this fight and he gets cement himself as one of the biggest stars in the sport. And what about Anthony Joshua I mean again. This is a guy who was heralded by some as like the next Lennox Lewis in the next great heavyweight. He really needs to win. Because if you lose his people are going to just say that he was good as we thought he was. And where did you go from there. It's hard hard to go from selling out stadiums and making four million fifty million even sixty million with some people think he's making for this fight to me. He's still make a lot of money. He still be a big name but it wouldn't be the same again all right. Then Mike. What's your prediction? WHO's GonNa come out on top? I usually feel like I have a good grasp on. WHO's GonNa win even on imprompt plenty of times? Of course. This one's such a coin flip fight so many variables were fighting outdoors in the Middle East. But I'M GONNA go at Andy Res I just I think I don't think it was a fluke. I think he's GonNa prove that he is the real deal. Medi Has Anthony. Joshua was number and that an old axiom but styles make fights and I think his presser style l.. And it's ultra quick. Hands are the Elixir for Anthony. Joshua's power will mike. Thanks so much for joining us and keep enjoying that breakfast. Fred thank you so much. Ziprecruiter the smartest way to hire so brandon's coming back to play tonight after as we've established the two concussions got in two few weeks last month who makes that decision well ultimately the doctor has the first call. The consultant has the first call to say you are cleared to play and once that determination is made then he passes out along to the team Brandon's cleared. He's able to play. The team can certainly have some mm input to say you know what yes. The doctor says you're physically healthy right now but we wanna get you back up to speed in game shape before we put you back out on the field in Brandon's ends case. He got a full week of practice last week so he was part of the full team activities he practiced he knows the game plan. And everything else so from their perspective perspective. Once he got cleared he was no different than than any other player right. And this wasn't a decision that brandon made on his own. He actually went to see a a specialist in Pittsburgh yes he did and that was on his own. The player always gets treatment in in his home city But because of the frequency frequency in mid because of his more serious issue brandon in his wife did did travel to Pittsburgh to consult with with a specialist not team employees. Not Somebody who the RAMS TMZ usually consult with even and we should also point out that there's only so much a team or the League can do to prevent a player from playing if he wants to the Rams uh-huh can't look at ran and cooks and say you know what Brandon you've had four concussions in the last twenty eight games. We don't think you should play that. The uproar that that would caused is that the players association would get involved. They literally. There's only so much that they can do they. They sit back. They get their input from the doctor. They get their input put from Brandon and and if those two on the same page then they say okay. You're you're able to pay and again based on the overwhelming number of of of players who I've dealt with if they get the thumbs up from Dr They want to get back on the field five minutes ago now. Brandon didn't get into a lot of the details of about about what he was told but he. He made it clear to us when he talked to reporters that he was comfortable that his wife was comfortable. Now learn You know concussion is a case by case thing and to be able to go there and get some information from Dr Collins in Pittsburgh I think was extremely helpful and whatever it was that he heard there made him think that he's he's not particularly susceptible to long term problems that he's able to heal from these concussions quickly. It's a blessing that don't now. I have symptoms through but at the end of the day once again. I think it's one of those things that's a case. By case thing I mean mine is very unique and he made it pretty clear to us that from his perspective perspective he was an outlier said. His wife sat through those meetings. Also seeing her comfortable going to those means me being at ease is such a blessing awesome. Because when you go home that's when you deal with the most as far as questions asked so. She's the Sierra accountable and Sierras concern is definitely helpful again me through this time for sure when he talked about it. He wasn't dismissive or or anything like that to to reporters questions but but he got he got asked some very pointed questions about. Are you concerned earned. Have you thought about retiring. And he was very forceful very direct in saying nope. I did not think about that. I'm not concerned I'm ready to come back back. And I was frankly a little taken back. I talked to a lot of players over the last. You know fifteen years or so and when you talk talked players whether it's hockey players or football players the the sense I've I've gotten is is most of them realize that they're taking a risk. Yes I know Oh my future might be impacted by this by. It's a chance that I'm willing to take because I love playing the sport because I love the financial security the comes with it and being able to take care of my family. What I heard from from Brandon was just more of kind of defiance and that just it hit me a little weird? And what about. What about Sean mcvay? What about his coach? Is he concerned. I wanted to know that. And and even before we talked to brandon I I asked John Directly I said. Are you concerned about this. Just on a human level never mind the football. Never mind the fact that he's a player. Who you value? Are you worried worried about this guy you know. I think I don't think he would go back out on the field if he was worried about that You know football is a physical game and sometimes those collisions rich are inevitable you hate talk around it. A little bit and said the Brandon felt comfortable and essentially that if brandon felt comfortable that he felt comfortable. I don't I think he would go back out there if he felt like that was on his on his mind. And I think that he's really chomping at the bit excited to go. So Sean really in the end didn't answer the question about how he felt about the situation but I I don't necessarily expect a coach to to answer that honestly at least not in a public forum. It would've been very unusual for coach to sit there and say yes. I'm worried yes. I'm not sure that that brandon should come back and play. Even if he has those thoughts in the back Qabus head. I wouldn't necessarily expect him to express those publicly. I feel like these. Conversations are always difficult because like brandin cooks as an adult. And he's got all the right in the world to choose to come back after all these concussions and you know he has the right to his medical privacy and I think the I thought that I had when I read your column and then I saw that he was coming back was what the contract situation but we. It's not even that right like he signed his contract last ear and he's pretty financially settled for the next five years. That's right that's an important distinction. Fifty million dollars in guaranteed money over five years or so even if brandin cooks never played another football game. I don't think he would be any type of financial peril and which just to be really clear about this. You're I'm not suggesting that anything underhanded is happening here. Nobody's doing anything wrong here. Everybody is following the protocol. That's been set in place and and for all practical purposes when Brandin cooks returns to the field He's he's healthy and he's no more susceptible to a concussion than than any of his teammates. Sir Or anybody else on the other side line. There's just there's something that feels a little bit different when when we're talking about these head injuries because of the long term Impact right and finally How how are the rams doing like how important is brandin cooks to the rest of the ram season? The very important. It's it's he's he was a big part of what they did last year in in getting to the super bowl and the rams as they go into tonight's game they're six six and four they. If the season ended right now they would not be in the playoffs and that's a huge surprise because they were expected to be one of the top teams in the NFC so they. They have not matched expectations the season and in particular. They have not matched expectations on offense that high scoring high flying offense that they had in two thousand seventeen in two thousand eighteen struggled for a big big part of the season and a lot of that is the passing game and a lot of the passing game has to do with Brandin cooks so him. Not Being in some of these games or being in and out of the lineup. has made a huge impact on that rams team. Thank you so much for joining us rich. All right thank you for having me. You can read rich Hammonds column about Brandin cooks on the athletic dot com and here are some other stories. We're following at the lead steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph had a pretty rough weekend on Saturday. He was fined fifty thousand dollars for for his role in his team's now infamous brawl with the browns then on Sunday. Tailgating browns fans mocked Rudolph by swinging football helmet at a Mason Rudolph Pinata data though the swing. I saw the Internet not particularly impressive hours later the struggling. QB was benched during Pittsburgh. Sixteen ten victory over the winless bengals the good news. You'll have a shot at redemption this Sunday when the steelers host the browns in a game that will certainly get a lot of attention. Even Washington's victories come with some seriously seriously laughable moments rookie dwayne Haskins picked up his first win as an NFL starting quarterback yesterday but missed the final play of the game. A victory kneel down and because he was busy taking a selfie with a fan coaches scrambled to find Haskins who later admitted his blunder but were forced to insert backup. QB case case keenum to drain the vinyl seconds on the clock. The Athletics Grant Paulsen caught up with the fan at the center of the Selfie. Snafu who said quote he was about to win his first. NFL Game. And I guess he just wanted the game to be over so he could spend time with the fans and celebrate. I mean I don't know about you unders but maybe it's the millennial in me. I think that's just adorable mm-hmm. It's pretty cute. Finally the Athletics Twenty ten decade in Review Kicks off today with team by team breakdown of the NBA Wmba and college basketball players. "In last season's. NFL Playoffs as every football fan remembers the New Orleans Orleans Saints were on the verge of a trip to the super bowl question but then the one of the worst calls in sports history. "I believe we can make more interesting synthetic still arbitrary, but other kinds of distinctions based on the world we live in now, not in the world of the model t and the telegraph fields that didn't exist when when people were creating the modern university in the late night in the late eighteen. Eighteenth to the night, late nineteenth century, you know, they were dealing with the problem of ma- of industrialization urbanism mission and the massive new global corporation beginning new global corporation. Now, we're dealing with outsourcing contingent labor jobs that can be automated overnight where stem jobs are particularly vulnerable. Finally, Kathy, how do you think that our education should respond to the challenge of artificial intelligence and automation? Well, I think that many ways I think one thing we have to realize that all intelligence artificial by that. I mean that when we're judging on a standardized test, how well somebody knows Greek history or some how well somebody knows differential equations we're making that the standard of what knowledge is. So that is artificially sorting certain kinds of knowledge when they're many other kinds of knowledge that are also very important. So one of the ways we have to cope with this is. Finding the human reasons and the human importance for technology and thinking of ways that these technologies actually services humans rather than hurt it. That's those are the kind of human questions that education should be preparing for. Thanks so much for your insight on this. It's my pleasure. Thank you so much for having me.
