"Opinions or none. So basically, it was a zero sum game of feminism must include the rights of all women, which I don't think that's an argument. But then she's bringing in Palestinian women who are under occupation by Israel. So that's another sticking point. But of course, that is very nuance. But these are the issues that are dividing the Jewish community both across the country and in New York. This is WNYC FM HD and AM New York WHAT FM eighty eight point one Trenton W, N J P, eight point five Sussex WNBA y eighty nine point three W N J O ninety point three Tom's river. We are in New York and New Jersey publicly as we talk about why there are two different women's marches or rallies this weekend of the women's March here in New York City with Liz Robbins wrote an explainer for the New York Times here is to make a Mallory on the radio show the breakfast club yesterday, unfortunately, black and Brown, folks because of our conditions because of what we've been through, you know, people don't just get the less folks who particularly are not invested in our liberation whole. We should and should not be speaking to and how we should speak about our people. So again, no, I do not agree with minister Farrakhan and everything that he says and how he speaks. It's not my language. I don't I don't subscribe to the I don't speak that. Way. And there are some things that I wish that he would not say Mallory went on to address anti-semitism specifically. Let's listen to that anti-semitism is a problem. It's a real serious problem. And it's one that black folks particularly needs to pay attention to because there are forces that want to be able to use anti black racism and anti-semitism within the Jewish and black communities to keep us apart. Because God forbid we ever pulled our power together. It really really started working again. So liz. Who who's attending? What what March Gloria Steinem? I see is attending the one called women's March. That includes to make a Mallory Linda Sarsour who else who might be notable is choosing up either side. Sure just to be clear to me, and Linda they will be in Washington because they're still part of the Washington group. They have they are New Yorker. So that's what some of the confusion comes from too. But it's a good Kayo who is actually a family friend of Gloria whose mother was an activist and work with the with the UN. So anyway, I think that Gloria is very much behind women's March NYC because she pre sheets, their advocacy and the principles that they've laid out and the platform for women's rights, and one thing is I do think that in all these questions of inclusivity, we've got I. Entity politics ego, Israel, anti-semitism racism, and oh, right women's rights. I think that that's one of the issues that seems to be lost here when we're dividing into these these issues that seem to be breaking up the communities. So there is a dividing line. There are some progressive Jews who are marching or actually standing in place at the rally and fully square because they see that the dialogue with Linda, and with Meco has been very fruitful, and they also feel like Jews of color have been welcomed into the women's March. NYC that's not to say that people are not welcome on the Upper West side. And I would say that Catherine Semion go the leader of the women's March alliance is very clear in saying we want our Jewish partners to feel comfortable coming here. In fact, that's why we did it on the Upper West side. So that people. Who don't want to travel on the Sabbath can come out in March, which I also felt left out a little bit of the rest of the city who cannot actually come to the Upper West side. But there are Jewish groups as well, very big reform congregation. Stephen wise free synagogue has thrown its support for the women's March alliance. And basically over the question of anti-semitism and minister Farrakhan, Tim in Brooklyn, you're on WNYC. Hi, tim. Hi, good morning. You know, I I I'm upset when he does a Jewish. You know, I think that progressives should be able to identify bigotry and h wherever comes from. I'm not Jewish, but I'm deeply disturbed by people who would associate without criticism or Beezer with with Louis, Farrakhan, or any other know, vile. He peddler, you know, it really shouldn't be framed as progressive issue. You know, progressive should be able to encompass an advocacy for Palestinian rights Palestinian homeland with at the same time calling out Louis Farrakhan, or a Mary Baraka for that matter as a file, you know, I hate monitors. Tim, thank you in as a follow up on that. As I see. The Farrakhan quotes the go around surrounding this one of them comes from the two thousand six speech where reportedly he said, it's the wicked Jews the false Jews that are promoting lesbianism homosexuality. So is there LGBT community divide over Farrakhan that plays into the women's March divide? Oh, absolutely. And and that was something that the women's March might see also took pains, perhaps a little slow, but they did to reach out and say, of course, we suppose. Port LGBT rights. And you know, when you when you're trying to say what you're for it seems as if many of these groups are saying what they're against. So the LGBTQ community. I can't say that one is what March is is better than the other for that. I still think there are issues of inclusivity that everybody needs to really think about and just go what Gloria said go with where you are most comfortable, and and Brian I think the other issue is too. It's gonna be cold on Saturday. Do you want to listen to speakers for three hours who will you know, enlighten you or do you want to March with other people? I think could be very cold options is the Upper West side one is a March. The Foley square blonde is a rally in place with more speeches. Let me tag this segment with one more call Jennifer in Manhattan who actually wants to. Point out a third March. Jennifer, you're on WNYC. Hi, hi, Brian. I wanted to tell you about another March cul de non March for disabled women, and it's happening. It's Saturday on Saturday at Grand Central between two and four and this event is being organized by Rizal resist in solidarity with the women's unity rally. So people can go from fully square to the non March for women in Grand Central and the well, we're focusing on is people with disabilities. This because forgive me because because we're over time, but is this because you feel that neither of the other two marches have sufficiently set themselves up to accommodate people with disabilities in some of the initial planning stages that seem to be the case certain concessions have been made and certain accommodations have been made. But the bottom line is that if you were just discussing it's gonna be cold on Saturday Grand Central is inside. It's warm. It's close to acceptable subway. Stations, and it will be a place where people can be together enjoying immunity and talk about their experiences as people with disabilities. So everyone disability allies, and everyone is welcome. There and needless to say it will be a warm place to be on Saturday. Jennifer. Thank you very much. Well, I guess unity is not the operative word with three different events taking place on women's March Saturday in New York this year, Liz Robbins from the New York Times wrote an explainer this week. Thank you for sharing it with us. Thank you. Right. Brian Lehrer on WNYC New York City police Commissioner James O'Neill joins us right after the latest news with Richard Hake. Hi, Brian government. Investigators say many more migrant children may have been separated from their parents than the Trump administration has acknowledged a report from the health of human services inspector general's office finds that family separations were taking place before the spring of last year when the administration announced at zero tolerance policy the administration identified a little more than twenty seven hundred children as part of a court case in which a federal judge ordered families reunited investigators concluded that the true number of migrant children separated, it's unknown and could be much higher. A democratic member of the bipartisan problem solvers caucus says his party has to find common ground with the president and the federal shutdown Long Island. Congressman Tom Swazi says he met with the president in the situation room speaking to NPR was he said that nobody benefits from this shutdown. I think it's worse for the president. I think it's worse for the country. And I think it's worse for the congress. Well, everybody's sick and tired of people just fighting with each other. They want us to get something done the number of furloughed, federal employees seeking unemployment benefits jumped in the first two weeks of the shutdown and top ten thousand during the week of January fifth.
