Former Baltimore mayor charged with wire fraud over self-published book deal

"Former Baltimore mayor Catherine Pugh resigned in disgrace charge now with all Levin counts of fraud and tax evasion because of that old healthy Holly scandal healthy healthy always been anything but healthy for Catherine fused career member that children's book series she wrote about healthy Holly and how to eat vegetables and all of those things it was self published top either so let's copies sold lots of copies because of apparently mayor pues corrupt arrangements region had local charities and organizations with business before the city and the city itself just buying all of her books then either keeping them in warehouses or making purchases that were never even full failed and she pocketed according to prosecutors hundreds of thousands of dollars some of which was applied to her campaign other parts of that money applied to sprucing up her home how nice she wrote a great book and she made money on it but she can spend it as she likes right The New York Times reports that the Catherine Pugh has been indicted on these corruption charges connected to money she received for a series of children's books she wrote from companies that had business ties to the city prosecutor's making this public today I missed you she resigned as mayor back in may amid all of these investigations member the F. B. I. rating her home and these warehouses it's all over that healthy Holly book series she's multiple charges she's facing wire fraud conspiracy to defraud the United States government and tax evasion the healthy Hollister is promoted healthy eating and exercise habits which is nice but it was never actually given to the children in many cases at one point the hospital says an implicit in Baltimore had paid her two hundred thousand dollars to donate these books to needy children she took the money never print the books if you get two hundred thousand dollars for it how was it a donation well the book itself would have been donated to the kids right but she got paid for the box yeah right so so they bought the books for the kids right there wasn't a donation on her part no but on their part on their part of the hospital yeah you see what what we're she went horribly awry here she never learned the lesson of alcohol they're going to get you a tax evasion Uncle Sam wants his money that's where you're going down every time that's really make a big mistake she sometimes do pull is sold the same exact books to two different buyers is all this arrangement was not very intelligent no France is they have titles like exercising is fun and vegetables are not just green fun facts there she sold them to two different buyers which enabled her to be paid twice and then she would promise a certain number of books at a given price and she was actually keep the money and not provide the books as promised it's like a Ponzi scheme we promise people if you invest you know you but you buy this in you're going to get this then they never get that niche gets other people to buy and then they don't they don't get it and it's you can't do that how it was bound to come crashing down now I'm more insult to the fact that this was a very smart now is poorly done is very poorly done and companies who had sit business for the city kept buying the books from her and then she would not recuse herself from voting or decision making on issues related to those companies so they were purchasing her favor by giving her cash you think the people Baltimore would wise up somewhere along the line the mayor before her was Stephanie Rawlings Blake track she was the one who gave gave the people room to destroy stuff after the death of Freddie gray yeah you know just given like a day or two to just burn down private businesses and you know destroy in stealing robin get it out of their system yeah yet she's out of politics now sure which is I think was probably a very smart choice it probably was not for her need to find a nother another venue I Sheila Dixon was the mayor before Stephanie Rawlings Blake she was investigated for theft fraud embezzlement and perjury right after she took office in eight the mode as she most famous for the theft of donated gift cards intended for needy families and she use to purchase offer codes and designer shoes she was indicted on twelve counts by a federal grand jury she did not serve jail time as part of a plea deal and she resigned in twenty ten with a promise to not seek political office for the term of her probation but Hey Baltimore if you're lucky she can come

"But that doesn't fit we'll talk about how to solve those problems the presence trying I assume even congressman Elijah Cummings is trying there's twenty some years ago he said there was an infestation going on in Baltimore and you talked about the zombies walking around his district but that you know I I have all the list from the mayor mayor Catherine Pugh a year ago before she was defrocked from the mayor's position of Baltimore walked around and talked about the read the writing carcasses and smell those rats so and there was a film put together by PBS called rats in Baltimore two and a half hours long it's all over the place but the tribes set the tribes are says the same thing the Democrats are saying and he's a racist by that standard I guess NPR's filled with racist it's absurd never let a crisis go to waste and watching television today was embarrassing how these democratic leaders are calling out the president everything but a white man calling the white nationalists race is affiliated with **** the Ku Klux Klan and his children only president we've ever had that has numerous Jewish your courage Jewish grandchildren is this present and he can denounce amis announce them dozens of times you can see it constantly on the internet if you like to look into it and take a look just Google president trump denouncing racism it's all the time everywhere but not that's never fit and I guarantee you if the shooter and date according to media accounts tonight as a satanist eight registered Democrat a supporter of Elizabeth Warren if all that's true and that's the reporting tonight then the Dayton incident will be quickly drop by the mainstream media much like the shooting of Stephen Scalise was dropped after a couple days it didn't fit all the news that fits the printer this done fed they're not going to print much of it at all syntonic Pat patches on his clothing photographs and Democrat so it you know I don't care is politics bullets don't have colors are races genders on him you're dead I also have great sympathy for the nearly fifty people wound sometimes living can be worse than dying terrible injuries take place when a two to three goes through your body terrible injuries so before I go to bed tonight I'm gonna say a silent prayer maybe a one out loud hoping that those affected by the terrible violence in el Paso Dayton also Chicago every week and every weekend Chicago is going to have six to seven homicides in about four to five thousand people shot this year this year over the last ten years were talking numbers are just absurd how many no seven eight thousand dead forty thousand wounded in one city one city and the rates going down the mayor life of says the rate's going down but if the media can't use this to advance their agenda they ignored so what happened to congressman Stephen Scalise was ignored by the media after two days was that guy was a supporter of Bernie Sanders who had nothing to do with the shooting tribes got nothing to do with this character in Dayton no the murderer the Callard from Dallas area that drove over to help pass so to specifically kill individuals of color this is terrorism matter what it is it's white power whatever you wanna call it terrorism no different in black nationalism black terrorism you hear all the time or Islamic terror terrorist terror I was continue thousands on hold millions are listening let's go to Julie in New Jersey Gillian New Jersey welcome to the bill Cunningham show Julie go ahead hi bill it's a if it's true about this guy that is that no high is a Democrat and loves the list of water and it's up to the Republicans had mentioned this every day now because right now at two minutes ago CNN announced that they can guide there's nothing political they just announced that droop whatever the guys Davis the order there's nothing political both this story's true it's I see I blame the Republicans the Republicans should have never given a path to that Bernie Sanders gunmen they should I blame the entire year but they have read a wreck and the anti semitic rhetoric from the Democrat party is increasing Hey I hate crimes against Jewish people that's never said veiny is terrific but he should have said if you're going to blame prompt within a blame the anti semitic bigoted Democrat party for the rent a wreck against Jewish people holding the media accounts the Dane shooter twenty four year old I won't mention his name while war satanic patches his clothes I had on his social media supported and T. for he was a registered Democrat and he supported Elizabeth Warren now the political motivation I don't mail Paso murderer believed in a guaranteed income a lot of the social posting said everyone's got to get a check from the government believed in free healthcare yeah a lot of progressive values but the media is not going to talk about those values they're gonna talk about white nationalist and a white nationals will kill you as quickly as a black nationalist or an Islamic terrorist they're all the same to come from the same cloth right and there's very very few but the media axes here for long not to be overtaken by the complex client or something Republican support they never fight back I'm sick of this being called a racist for three years every day because I voted for trump then I'm going to get a crossover votes yeah I know Julie I thought it was a big deal when James Hoskinson who was a Democrat democratic activist drove hundreds of miles from Illinois at ten to hunt down specifically Republicans he stalked them for a few days I thought this a big story it was gone within two days because the Republicans didn't want to talk about it because they didn't blame they didn't blame Bernie Sanders a Ben and Jerry's for the behavior of this attempted murderer that's two wrong you know Julie two wrongs don't make a right that's well I know what you're saying bill where this case you have to five thirty just like they do to us it gets that you've got saying the Democrats they're laughed when they keep calling us racists say what red cell from sneezes he's a racist this means nothing and the shame them two wrongs don't make a right but in this case Republicans always you know what all right let's start a fight dirty the last six of the blame the entire Democratic Party if you'll give me one more example Steven king of Iowa made some intemperate comments he and the Republican Party under the demands of the mainstream media got a mouthful of the committees I will committee see K. safe can got he was banished by the Republican Party every time a Republican does something wrong the media runs around every other Republican and you got to denounce what Stephen king's out or denounce what trump center now as well where the Republican is the media runs around microphones at all the other Republicans the job on then we demand action when you along Omar and I somebody congressman says the kind of filled the thing she says about Jews the media never runs the other Democrats and say one thing about congressman Omar she should be censure kicked out no I never have a play by completely different set of rules I truly understand what you're saying but let's face it fair is fair Hussein Obama even though black lives matter was welcome inside the White House after ever getting the murder of cops and after the cops are killed in the riots took place Obama invited them into the White House Obama is not a black nationalist and does not have blood on his hands anymore than trump is not a white nationalist and is not have blood on his hands despite the behavior of these Democrats I would be anxious for CNN commentators to challenge these fools on the left to make ridiculous comments about a president that is can damn rock white supremacy on a regular basis let's go to Steven on a cell phone in North Carolina home of the tar heels and the wolf pack Stephen a North Carolina welcome to the bill Cunningham show Stephen go ahead hi bill two weeks all alone what you do and and all the server of great Americans to tell the truth thank you thank you well I've got the all the would change some of this stuff this along with the ACLU and the converse is heard out of our society and that does the law of god love god love your neighbor as you love yourself and they and Intel we get back to that that the the Democrats and the liberals they took the constitution excuse me that so the kids ten commandments out of out of the capital and out of the school and see let me ask you this we have a long list we have a long with society and that that's what they wanted to see if they are they are getting a society of goggles not now listen up we have massive Sentinel Kerr friend no problems almost every week there's one to two thousand Americans murdered by the communist red Chinese shipping Fenton on car front no one in the country we lose about seventy thousand a year it's a ridiculous number if any other foreign power was killing Americans much like Fenton on car friend always killing Americans every year we go to war with them we got that problem the churches are largely emptied out the that there is a hollowness in the American character that's happening right now and I don't like it **** is rampant filthy portrayals of women a biblical base to Christianity is not really preached almost anywhere in the country anymore and some of the underpinnings of our of our way of life have been afflicted and we have a president elected by the American people to do a job from the day he took office he was condemned by the radical left in the news media who never wanted him to do anything in office from the riding that took place the day after his election to the calls for his death the day after the inaugural when many Hollywood lefties talked about blowing up the White House this guy's dealt with this now for almost three years and it's ridiculous now that the grandfather of Jewish children is called a white nationalist despite the fact he's condemn them on a regular basis white nationalism is terrorism murdering those innocent people is despicable and if the Dayton guide led to what I got the death penalty and Mike DeWine would have signed it I guarantee a governor Abbott in the great state of Texas I love taxes is going to sign the next few years a death warrant to put that guy to death for what he did driving from Dallas to Paso the killing those innocent persons disgusting and I guess the ACLU and the Democrats on the left so I will fight to make sure his all of his rights well that by the end of the day governor Abbott will make sure that man is executed for what he did I don't care if it's a hate crime or not it's aggravated murder it's capital murder he did it execute him after a fair trial of course let's continue with more one becomes available eight six six six four seven seven three three seven bill coming in the great American live with you every Sunday.

Baltimore mayor submits resignation amid investigations

"The city of Baltimore is without a permanent mayor this evening after weeks of growing, please for mayor Catherine Pugh to step down. She finally resigned today in a letter read by her lawyer Steve Silberman today, I am submitting my ridden resignation to the Baltimore City council. I am sorry for the harm that I have caused to the image of the city of Baltimore and the credibility of the office of the mayor peers resignation comes during. Multiple investigations into sales of her children's books to explain more. We're joined now by Luke broad water of the Baltimore Sun. Welcome good afternoon. Sue, can you just give us some more details about what led to resignation today? Yes. Well for about a month and a half she has been under tremendous political pressure. It started with the story that we broke in the Baltimore Sun involving her business dealings as a member of the university of Maryland, Maryland, medical system board of directors. She had been selling five hundred thousand dollars worth of herself published children's books to the hospital network at a time when she was supposed to be overseeing their activities this spiraled into more investigative reporting from the sun that uncovered more similar deals with other business entities that do business with the city of Baltimore it prompted. Multiple investigations state local and finally a federal investigation. I think there's something like seven investigations and multiple calls for the mayor's resignation from the governor on down to every member of the city council. She hasn't been charged with a crime yet. But, but how likely is it that she is going to be facing charges? Why can't speculate about the likelihood of charges, but there are of luminous investigations going on numerous investigations. I mean, the FBI the IRS the state prosecutor the city ethics board the inspector general of the Maryland insurance administration. There are multiple investigations. And we do know that there are quite likely looking at her taxes and also her ethics forms in addition to any larger alleged corruption schemes now Pugh is the second Baltimore mayor in a decade to quit because of ties to criminal investigation. Right. So what would you? You say these resignations reflect about Baltimore City politics there. Why would hope folks nationally wouldn't get the wrong idea about Baltimore? Because I'm in Baltimore's my favorite city in the country. But the, but we have had a very serious problems here with leadership and governess governance being done in an ethical way. And you're right tumors ago. Mayor Sheila Dixon had to resign after pleading to perjury charges into the theft of gift cards meant for children. So this is two out of the last three mayors have resigned amid scandal. Of course, mayor Pugh is only under investigation. She is not charged with any crime. But the political pressure on her I think made it untenable for her to govern with the governor the state com roller the city delegation. The city council the business community everyone. Call on her to resign. Now just really quickly Pugh has been on leave since early last month because of medical issues and the current acting mayor does not want the job. So who's expected to take place while there will be a robust fuel of field of candidates now, including likely the past mayor, you reference mayor dick. In likely, we'll get back into the mix. There are some other top candidates from the city council from people who run for governor before I don't want to announce their campaigns for them, but it will be it'll be highly

He died of a brain infection after crossing the southern border as an unaccompanied minor. This is the third death of a migrant child in US custody since December NPR's John Burnett has more the still unnamed teenager crossed from Mexico into El Paso, Texas on April nineteenth and was detained by the border patrol a statement from the US office of refugee resettlement, which is responsible for the care of migrant. Children says a clinician with the border patrol observed. No health problems, the youngster was transferred the next day to a large government contractor child shelter in south Texas, called CASA Padre, it's a cavernous converted WalMart and the city of Brownsville run by south west key this Austin based nonprofit houses more migrant children for our throughout the country than any. Eight days later, it's devastating to staff something like this happens tragedy. Robert Carey was head of our in the last two years of the Obama administration. He recalls to migrant children died on his watch. He said they arrived in the US with pre-existing. What we find out as we have more about these is the children are leaving their lives in custody are it's because they're. Sick. They are not receiving adequate care and attention in disabilities. The deaths of Jacqueline in Philippi prompted customs and border protection to spend millions to assign contract medical personnel border patrol stations. They're now supposed to screen and triage all arriving migrants border patrol officials say they're transporting more than sixty of them to the hospital every day, the fatality of third migrant child happens amid a historic surge of Central American children and families crossing the southern border many to request asylum more than one hundred thousand were taken into custody last month yesterday, the White House asked for four and a half billion additional dollars in humanitarian aid for arriving migrants more than half of that request is for increased shelter capacity for unaccompanied children. Multiple investigations state local and finally federal investigation. I think there's something like seven investigations and multiple calls for the mayor's resignation from the governor on down to every member of the city council. She hasn't been charged with a crime yet. But, but how likely is it that she is going to be facing charges? Why can't speculate about the likelihood of charges, but there are voluminous investigations going on numerous investigations. I mean, the FBI the IRS the state prosecutor the city ethics board the inspector general of the Maryland insurance administration. There are multiple investigations. And we do know that are quite likely looking at her taxes and also her ethics forms in addition to any larger alleged corruption schemes now Pugh is the second Baltimore mayor in a decade to quit because of ties to criminal investigation. Right. So what would you? You say these resignations reflect about Baltimore City politics there. Well, what hope folks nationally wouldn't get the wrong idea about Baltimore. Because I'm in Baltimore's my favorite city in the country. But the, but we have had very serious problems here with leadership and governess governance being done in an ethical way. But the political pressure on her I think made it untenable for her to govern with the governor the state comptroller, the city delegation, the city council the business community everyone calling on her to resign. Now, just really quickly Pugh has been on leave since early last month because of medical issues, and the current acting mayor does not want the jobs who's expected to take place while there will be a robust fuel of field of candidates now, including likely the past mayor who you reference mayor Dixon likely. We'll get back into the mix. There are some other top candidates from the city council from people who run for governor before I don't want to announce their campaigns for them, but it will be it'll be highly contested Luke broad waters reporter for the Baltimore Sun. Thank you very much. Thank you. And you're listening to all things considered from NPR news..

"The winner for ten WCBS six eighty one eight hundred WCBS eighty we're talking about finally after almost ten months or more of escalating violence horrific homicides. Again, the death of not just people in western north west Baltimore, but in federal hill and riverside in canton. Finally, the police Commissioner and the mayor agree on a strategy that will put two hundred and thirty more police officers on the streets. Now as I said that's far short of what is still needed. I still think you need a thousand officers patrolling the streets not six hundred and fifty but we don't have that. We don't have those numbers right now. But at the end of the day, again, it's still has to be the residents of Baltimore City constituents. A Baltimore City that demand change the demand protection. And right now, they have been conditioned to believe the police are are the enemy police are not your friends. The police are out there to do nothing, but hassle harangue stop you, especially if you're black, and I think this is gonna take a watershed moment. Frank for a lot of people. I mean, we've seen not just in Baltimore. But in Chicago and other urban areas as well, this has been through eight years of the Obama Justice department, and now through these liberal identity politics practitioners like Catherine Pugh and others where the police are sort of a necessary evil. Well, despite what they were the residents may say if if there's a willingness on the part of as I said, the Baltimore City delegation and others that would jump on the bandwagon as well to basically. Allow the governor to appoint a new Commissioner then it would facilitate a whole lot easier. The possibility of using the national guard right now if you to use the national guard the city of Baltimore hassle requested. The governor just can't send the guard in it has to be requested by the mayor. I see no willing- willingness or any initiative on the part of the mayor of Baltimore right now. Wanting to see the national guard come in we talked about the guard coming in so frequently. But only only if if it's requested by the mayor of autumn, or if the governor appoints name Commissioner, then the governor can take the action and circumvent the mayor Barbara devolve length, again, new voice that of Mike Ditka. "Talk about the hot issues of the day expect more from wbal newsradio 1090 and the wbal app i think anything that has confederate veterans poor concern about violence occurring see and i just think that baltimore right in the mist of hitting consent decree completed bill this is not something that need it baltimore city mayor catherine pugh talking about the removal of four statues from baltimore city the wiz hopefully find out whether particular warehouse whatever but confederate era statues as well as the reg tony statue which is not confederate era budget cerpa interview with your kathy slater the legacy of the dread scat decision is why you're seeing the governor of state of merle the president's state senate speaker house i'll talk about removing the statue of budgetary from the grounds is right there soon as you walk at the capital annapolis is right there the raj attorney statue but i want to add this discussion because this just came out for the majority leader mitch mcconnell but charlie the united states senate it's an reference of course to president donald trump's press conference yesterday but it's also connected to a story here about baltimore you may be aware lexington kentucky did the city of lexington is also considering removing some of its confederate era statues as a result of that uh the same groups the kkk neonazi they're considering aggressively trying to get a rally in lexington professor ahead of the decision to remove these statutes so that's part of the backdrop like the beyond lump very you know it so the mitch mcconnell released a statement today such much keep the mud it's a reaction to president trump yesterday but it's also in reference to what's happening in lexington kentucky the white supremacists kkk at neonazi groups who brought hatred and bow to charlottesville are now planning a rally lexington are messages of hate and bigotry are now welcoming kentucky as should that be welcome anywhere in america we have no tolerance for an ideology a race racial hatred there are no good neonazis and those who espouse their views are not supporters of american ideals and freedoms we all this list we all have a responsibility to.

"Let's go to this news with me sam your favorite data scientists brittany former appointee to the president asked for central nervous policing and for educator remember the ferguson commission can and clint smith third your favorite doctoral student the resident academic here embodied the people everyone it near it is a brit will look at eddie outpost media with on oil clint clint occurred at i on twitter and tear this is sam yang wei at sam sway on twitter this duray duran twitter sam okay so my piece of new is uh in baltimore the mayor catherine pugh along with the police chief and other city leaders proposed a mandatory one year sentence for illegal gun possession within a hundred yards of a school park church public building or other public place of assembly in city evolves march uh and i'm gonna just read the quote from mayor pugh she said that there if they church or school on nearly every corner in the city and as it relates to this legislation she said that's a good thing so in other words particularly in black neighborhoods in baltimore at pretty much the entire neighborhood now going to be under the cloud of a mandatory one year sentence if you're caught in possession of illegal firearms and i bring that to the conversation because oftentimes on the left where we talk about guns and gun violence um the immediate sort of reaction and recommendation or solution that's propose are the gun control measures that um in some cases know whether it's all weapons banner or this proposal from mayor q i increases criminal penalties on on people uh who were caught in possession of illegal firearms and disproportionately those people end up being black and so i wanted to have the conversation about how we can address done with without actually leading to accelerating map incarceration sickly for breakfast.
