"Today we're looking at this letter from Luther to the clergy and the people of Breslau. It's the letter that wasn't easy for him to right. He didn't respond right away and when he did respond. There is still the copy of Menu Strict manuscript that the printer had from which he made an open letter that was shared throughout Europe to help other leaders and how to respond and in that manuscript. They can see different types of paper in different types of pen that are used that luther sat down multiple different times to try to craft this letter in such a way that he gave counsel to leaders sent to just neighbors in how to respond. So why? Why do they think that Luther had to continually revisit this particular letter desert any any theories on that I? Mean this obviously, he was busy with the play dealing with the plague. So initial response the plague arrives in Breslau Wittenberg about the same amount of time in August in Breslau, it continues all the way through November, and that's why they write to a multiple different times requesting response and so luther would be I just busy in the spiritual care of the people of Wittenberg we mentioned how the mayor's wife died I'm it said that she died Pretty much in luther hands issues caring for her but then later during the struggle of the plague. Historian has conjectured that Luther was experiencing a great deal of depression and despair over the people that he cared about dying and he I, would think found it difficult to write kind of a clinical response of how everyone is supposed to respond though he found his own response challenged mixed with his grief. You know one of the things that when I read up on this Luther opened his home they didn't have hospitals. Some bigger cities would and he wished that there were more hospital, right? Right. But there were not in Wynberg and Wittenberg, there was no hospital. So Luther is home became a hospital of sorts where the sick would come and he took care of them, and that's that's how he ended up. Holding the mayor's wife as she died also the chaplain's wife who was pregnant. Passed away and that and that plague and luther own wife Catherine. Katie was pregnant during this time she was in her third trimester by the end of November the plague had receded from Wynberg end in December Luther wife delivered their child. Elizabeth. so as their opening their home and caring for the sick and Wynberg Luther would in any moment of caring for someone also look over and see.

"Of night side and we got some great topics tonight to keep you entertained and hopefully stimulated as the evening goes on we will get certainly to the impeachment hearing today in which the law school professors opined as to what they've found to be impeachable and what was not impeachable I felt I was back at Boston University law school and we're gonna have some fun with that later on tonight I promise you that is an interesting story coming up at nine o'clock about dog tags dog tags there the identification tags worn by members of the US military well they can add any dog tags with Bible verses we'll get to that first I'm gonna talk about the battle over vaccines in Massachusetts but before we get to that I first of all want to introduce myself I'm Dan ray the host of nights I Nancy shack along with rob Brooks are in the control room and I just want to mention that we will be doing our seventh annual night side charity combine two weeks from tomorrow night that will be December nineteenth the week before Christmas stuff for those of you who have listened to the show for a long time you know that every year I like the end of the last two hours of my broadcast year many the last two hours of my final broadcast for the year having invited upwards of twenty twenty two great charities around New England to commit to studio with me and for a few minutes to explain what they do what help they might need some of these charities need volunteers all of them probably need donations for those of you out there who might be so inclined towards the end of the year you might like to make a charitable contribution or two it's a great end of the year program and in order to do that I'm going to invite any of you who are associated with a legitimate charity can be a big charity with head Easter seals on before shadow fun generally is here with us every year we give them a little bit of a position of priority because they are the official charity of of night side the official website charity also we have some very small charities all we ask is that one you be a legitimate charity uncle Harry's beer fund is not a legitimate charity we expect you to be a five oh one C. three charity which means my listeners if they chose to if they choose to donate to you they will receive a five oh one C. three letter eight dollars young that dog donation which they can use when they pull their taxes together next spring what do you have to do well if you are in any way shape or form an official with the charity or you have someone in your family who's involved with charity what I want you to do is send an email the executive producer of this program the NC shack her email address very simple Nancy shack at I heart media dot com if you have any questions about spelling Nancy or shack N. A. N. C. Y. S. H. A. C. K. at I heart media this subject dot com and she asked that you put charity in the subject line but you have to just give us a brief description of the charity you also need to include a daytime phone number and the name of the person I assume in many cases it will be you in other cases it might be someone but don't just send in someone else's name if you're going to send in someone else's name other than yourself let's say your son or daughter or your niece or nephew is very active with a great charity include their name and include their daytime phone number and make sure they know that you have submitted their name because I don't want Nancy calling someone and saying old we're going to have you in studio on December nineteenth are you are going to be able to participate in the seventh annual at night sight charity combine and have that person then say what a you talking about so please we've done this for six years it's gone very simply very easily very quickly all of you who participate get a chance to come into the studio with me here in Medford you get a chance to meet Nancy get a chance to meet rob get a chance to see the I heart media complex and be in the studio and talk for three or four minutes about what the charity does what calls is being served what assistance the charity needs in terms of volunteers financial support or whatever so I hope I made myself clear if you want to to talk with Nancy or me you can give me a call during the day and you can get my direct line from Nancy just by dialing six one seven two five four ten thirty if there are any questions well I hope you have a bunch of new charities the old beat to charities we've been here in prior years they are welcome back we will give some priority to the new charities certainly but everyone is invited is a great year it was an idea of my daughter Catherine Katie about six or seven years ago and it's worked out really well okay what are we gonna talk about first up tonight I want to go to the hearing that accrued yesterday at the Massachusetts state house we had talked about I hearing that had been postponed last night or I believe she's we start we talk about hearing last night that had been postponed from Monday but the hearing that was held yesterday dealt with vaccines and the struggle between many members of the medical establishment in the medical community who realize the great usefulness and efficacy of vaccines in preventing certain common relatively common but dangerous diseases are particularly for children I think all of us who have had children know what it's like to go through all of those vaccine protocols to make sure that measles mumps rubella and in other common diseases are not yeah it did that your children are are are not being impacted by just by those diseases now there are some people who are very much skeptical of vaccinations for a whole bunch of reasons some people are assured a religious belief ed others are skeptical and and they have seen information which may or may not be true about adverse impact of vaccines on children I know a little bit about this subject for the point of view of autism I I've done a lot of work over the years without an autism organization the the New England school of himself pro home and I have become convinced that vaccinations have no impact on children who at about the age of eighteen months display artist however the statistics that are around I suggesting that measles is making a comeback not only here but in many countries around the world and the piece of legislation that is under consideration at the state house is a little troubling because the there's an editorial today The Boston Globe which which ways out the case of for the for the legislature to ship to support this some this piece of legislation and the legislation would essentially prevent parents from demanding that the children not be vaccinated based upon religious belief now that's a tough question it's a tough question for me because I think we need to recognize kids the religious beliefs of families number one and I I'm I'm concerned about the extent of this however apparently one of the reasons that the folks are concerned about this is that the number of a children's school children every every year avoiding vaccinations are because a religious exemption for kindergartners in the state in the last but thirty years has quintupled gone from but a hundred forty seven back in nineteen eighty seven to seven hundred and forty nine for last year according to the state department of public health now according to the Boston Herald article the bill would completely remove religious vaccine exemptions from state law requiring all Massachusetts children to be vaccinated unless they have a medical exemption and of course a medical exemption would have to be proven and also a medical exemption much more difficult to assert and people can't assure a religious point of view are religious a claim to religious exemptions help I want to open this up and give you an opportunity to talk about this Apelles of pretty heated debate yesterday at the state house six one seven two five four ten thirty triple eight nine two nine ten thirty I also am troubled and I will just look leave this out there is my thought then you can expand on it if you like we've had an incredible over recent years influx of people coming into this country illegally and they are coming in from countries well mostly from I'm south of the border but they're coming in from countries from around the world we're vaccinations are not nearly as common as they are in Massachusetts and yet I hear no one no one making any sort of a linkage or a suggestion of a linkage that perhaps the increase of measles and other contagious diseases in America might be directly related not to the number of parents who are not allowing or claiming religious exemption so that children can be exempted from getting vaccinated but from the presence in school systems of kids who have no records of vaccinations six one seven two five four ten thirty triple eight nine two nine ten thirty I think this is it interesting topic I hope you do as well feel free to join the conversation was started right after the break.

"What was Mr Marquel doing when you pulled out? It was on a phone. Still seated in the driver's seat of his vehicle is and what happened once you pulled into his driveway. Way Singapore within. Of course you have jumped off. The car went around not around. I'm putting them on the front of the car. His car in on the car was driving to the drive side. Shot Him. He Shot Mr Marquel. That's Luis Rivera wearing blue prison. Issue jumpsuits sued seated on the stand testifying in a crowded courtroom in Tallahassee Florida and he's casually describing how he says his best friend Sigifredo Garcia walked up to forty two year old. Dan Marquel car and shot him through the closed driver's side window twice in the head although during his testimony Lewis claims that he and Sigfredo will always be friends. He's testifying against him in siegfried does murder trial a trial in which Rato's longtime on again off again girlfriend Catherine Katie Magnano is also a defendant an episode ninety three part one. I covered Dan's murder as well. As the first part of this trial I had to divide this up into two episodes because quite honestly there is so much information and details involved in this case that they want to make sure I cover all of the important parts and not worry about fitting it all into one episode episode just to recap what we learned in the first episode and who the main people are. In this case Dan Marquel the victim had gone through a tumultuous molpus divorce with his ex wife when the Adelson according to motions they filed against each other and emails admitted into evidence. Wendy the and her mom Donna. Adelson wanted Wendy to move to south Florida with the kids to be closer to the rest of her family. That request was denied by the judge. There was also emotion right before he died that Dan had filed accusing Donna. Wendy's mom of trash talking him to to their kids. He had asked the judge to impose supervised visits with Donna and the kids but before that could be ruled upon. Dan was killed now. Here's the prosecution's theory. They believe that the Adelson family namely Donna and Wendy's brother Charlie were behind the plot plot to kill Dan at the time of Dan stuff. Charlie was dating Katherine or Katie. As you'll hear her be referred to as and prosecutors believe. I believe that Charlie enlisted Catherine's help in doing so catherine then turned to the father of her children whom she had separated from at the time. Sigifredo Sigfredo Garcia and hired him to do it. Sigfredo then asked his best friend. Luis Rivera to help Sigfredo Garcia Zia Luis Rivera and Katherine Benham have all been charged in the case Lewis confessed and pleaded guilty and is now testifying in the trial L. Against Radio and Catherine meanwhile no one from the Adelson family not Charlie Nordana have been arrested so here we are with part two. If you haven't yet listened to part one please do so now before continuing on in part two. We're going to cover more of what you just heard in in the very beginning of this episode Louis Rivera's testimony and we're also going to hear some wiretapped phone calls as well as from Catherine Meg Banta herself as she testifies in her own defense. But I in part one. We finished with Wendy Adelson's ex boyfriends testimony.

"Bloomberg here in our Bloomberg interactive brokers studio and Catherine Katie a Gryffindor others we like to collar FX and rates reporter for Bloomberg also here with me in New York City and so dynamic duo were looking a field a bit over to Hong Kong we heard a little bit of those headlines from to Chris near there I guess the question on the table Katie is what we make of Hong Kong through the lens of the markets what's really interesting because if you look at the spot market the Hong Kong dollar's been pretty resilient it hasn't bumped up against that seven point eight five per dollar level at which point the Hong Kong monetary authority would probably intervene it's only about seven point eight two right now but if you look at the funding markets of the money markets you see a lot more anxiety that you know maybe out resilience won't last if you look at three month forward points it's a pretty amazing chart they spoke to the highest since nineteen ninety nine which is the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis before I get you just want to bring some quick headlines nvidia those earnings crossing the Bloomberg terminal right now beating on the top and the bottom line I believe if I'm reading this right their core revenue coming in at three point zero one billion the estimate there had been for two point nine one billion and even above the range of two point ninety two point nine eight adjusted EPS for the third quarter coming in at a dollar seventy eight the estimate there was for a dollar at fifty five let's see what the stock is doing it is essentially five so we'll keep an eye and that is falling a bit maybe on the forecast will bring you more on that in just a few minutes so Mr signal L. I turn it to you to help us understand what traders are saying to you about Hong Kong but there is a funding squeezing it's there because of the concerns of what's office and go on with protests but if you look at the Hong Kong rates garbage trading like days of old prior to the euro when currencies like the Italian lira the French Frank with the value so is a lot of pressure on the short end traders are taking the ones in three months forwards to what they're doing is a swap so there if they're buying a four dollars and what this does is you sell and buy dollars you buy and sell Hong Kong that gives you that swap when you have Hong Kong dollars for whatever period you to as one to three months that either is there to fund your short Hong Kong dollar position on the hope that the cap will eventually give way or your lending it into a short squeeze market in trying to make money on the arbitrage by lending it into into businesses etcetera more clearly financial institutions that can't get into that from the market it's very complicated it's very complicated what do I make of all that Katie is fine not as smart as the two of you what do I make of these sort of signals I guess that I'm getting because I I do feel like the Hong Kong issue is a complicated one just ask anyone in the NBA or any C. E. are right for that matter how do we see this playing out and is this something that is a short a mid term or long term worry if you're in the business of money it's a great question I mean it is a very complicated nuanced issue but it's pretty simple if you're an investor I mean the Hong Kong dollar peg to bet against it Bloomberg ran a headline back in August that called this the currency that George Soros couldn't break but you're seeing really fulfilling it is a great have I wish I wrote it but you seem really vocal hedge fund managers such as Kyle bass come out and bad that you know this bout of unrest these increasingly violent protests are going to cost capital flight out of Hong Kong which is going to force the Hong Kong monetary authority to abandon the peg right but I mean anyone in the market will tell you that's a fool's errands the Hong Kong monetary authority has about four hundred fifty billion and FX reserves so they can sit there and defend this tag for an indefinite right and I do wonder events you know thinking about again sort of the business of money one of the big questions in my mind at least has long been what is this due to Hong Kong's place as a financial center you know as a place where people like you would go and set up shop in where places you know big banks would expand and and think about as a real anchor in that part of the world has a really good question and the the thought process from the sources I talked to about six months ago in the trade talks were stolen or so around may the talks were moved from Beijing to Shanghai and the reason for that the notion and light Heiser were basically instructed the it's kind of one of those reveal the open up the curtains and you look outside in it and if you look at this massive financial district essentially then city that China is building and the fifth story goes that essentially what China would like to do in protest perhaps the soon is a year from now is to move the financial center of of China from Hong Kong to Shanghai right and then once that's all done the rights kind of quiet by themselves because there's the there's no longer worry right money's gone right so so interest you follow the vengeance yeah the way it works absolutely are the.

"As you could gather from that killer commercial space plex was an indoor amusement park in arcade in smithtown space blacks. There were actually bumper cars inside there were rides. There were flashing lights everywhere. It was meant to sort of try to transport you into this wonderful world of gaming with video games and rides right at Belli's alley at four thirty P._M.. On December Twenty Eighth Nineteen ninety-two space plex employees were approached by a worried man named John Esposito. He was frantic because he had lost track of the child he would have been entrusted with a little girl named Katie. The employees jumped on board and helped John Search for Katie but she was still missing after an hour. They called her loudly over the intercom. There is no sign of her and the dark indoor amusement park. After hours of searching. Mr Esposito was in tears when he reported kiedis disappearance it was Katie's tenth birthday and he had explained how he had taken her to a toys R. US to buy a video game for president a slurpee at seven eleven and then to space plex the afternoon so massive search went under way behind space plex the indoor amusement park and Smithtown New York their one hundred recruits from this police academy joined by fifteen additional officers searching route twenty five near space packs so the police who aren't participating in the physical search for Katie they start digging into Katie's life and her family and and the supervision she was on on the day that she went missing and the big question is who is this John Esposito and how do the end up with Katie that day esposito was a 43-year-old bachelor from bayshore and a friend of Maryland Beers who was Katie's mother and the Beers family met Esposito about ten years prior when a daughter of one of their friends married Mr Esposito brother Patrick then when Katie's brother John John was about eight or nine back then he would actually spend time with Esposito and he would take him away for the day or for weekend outings and Maryland actually believed that Esposito was a good kind of father figure her for her son to the horror of Katie's family only hours after hearing the news that Katy disappeared from space plaques a new message appeared on the answering machine. The call came in some time after five pen on the very same day Katie had vanished in the voice was believed to be that Katy and they actually weren't sure at the time if the message was actually left by Katie or if someone recorded voice and then played laid-back into a phone receiver therefore leaving the message on her behalf in some other way and the message essentially said that she'd been abducted by a man with a knife in the message ended with Oh my God here he comes us and she sounded to be screaming and sobbing in this message so that you know you can't imagine what the family is thinking upon hearing this but yeah the police luckily were quickly able to locate the actual phone booth that was used and they determined that it had been someone who had played a tape recorder into the phone I was I was going to say the reason that they figured out that it was like taped message or a big reason was there was zero noise behind her voice so couldn't have been at a payphone when there's cars driving by people around or would have been like we more noisy so seemed way to focus to have been from where it was actually from from got. It got it interesting so the police officer who may this determination ultimately said you know she was in our opinion coursed to make that recording so as the police started to dig in a media firestorm ensued food a description of the little girl was blasted across Long Island News Media Catherine Katie Beer was born on December thirtieth nineteen eighty two out of south side hospital and Bayshore Long Island she was blonde forty pounds and was to celebrate her tenth birthday two days after her disappearance and the day after Katie disappeared from Space Plex John showed a Christmas card during the news segment it was a card that she had sent to him and in a childlike handwriting below a printed verse on the card where the words thanks for being like a big brother to me so the investigation revealed that Katie had a an unconventional homelife her mother Maryland was a single mother and a cab driver who struggled to make ends meet and had a hard time caring for Katie and for her older son John who was six years older and Maryland wasn't exactly sure who Katie's father was months after Katie was born Maryland picked up a woman inner cab named Linda in in killer and she and her husband's Sal soon became part of beers sort of extended family and by age four it was reported that Katy would wander through the neighborhood barefoot so it starts getting really unconventional because you have this sort of you know these kind of friends who were caretakers of her and by first grade she could actually be seen hanging out in the streets with no supervision on school days so by age page eight Katie had actually moved in with her godmother and her husband Sal fulltime and she had her own room with a lot of stuffed animals and a one hundred one Dalmatians comforter but it was interesting she would do things for the adults like their laundry and people would see her around town and they were concerned about her. I mean it seemed that she was kind of living off of free food and coffee at the cute t laundromat which is where she was doing laundry Andrea of her caretakers and she would make the runs to the stationery store for potato chips candy and she was buying cigarettes for Linda and Sal who are essentially her godparents again at eight years old well right and I know also that <hes> I read read the kids at school. You know caller like cockroach kid. I mean she looked unkempt. People were worried about our shoes walking around on the sidewalk barefoot her nails. I heard were like black last. She was just not being cared for for a little girl. You don't know how to you don't know you don't know hygiene at eight literally child right so like I said the neighbors were becoming concerned and considered calling child protective services. I actually did call in reported not only that she was absent all the time but also that they just noticing glaring glaring signs of neglect but nothing was ever done and so even though Oh Katie was under Linda and sales care they entrusted Katie with John Esposito too because he was a family friend of Maryland's and they had known each other a long time you know such was the case on the day Katie Vanish from space plex and it looks like kind of the thing where it's like. We're not caring for that much. Yeah you WanNa take her in tickers. Something Fun sure I mean why would we stop you. Meanwhile police were slowly piecing together a timeline for the day that katy witnessing they found out that Katie had been last seen by someone other than John at the seven eleven and Beige for four hours before she was reported missing by him. This is exciting that they're able to corroborate when Katie was recorded on video camera and the store accompanied by John but before the Stop at seven eleven he said he'd taken her to a toys R. US and bought her a troll doll so the detectives have questioned Mr Esposito for more than eighteen hours after he reported Katie missing because although they initially gave him the benefit of the doubt out after chaotic fury of the search for Katie. They started to learn some alarming things about his past. If you're constantly on the go like I am you know that it's very very hard to try.

Did you ever see the the documentary play with crowd the documentary? Yes. I did. Didn't it? Get lamps to see see. What's funny is is the same thing. That's great about your music. Is that it's honest. Wouldn't you say, it's very honest. You can't saying what you're singing if you're not feeling it. No, very true. I think that's the same thing. I think that's the same reason. Why you're okay. Funny. If we if we can open with a compliment. Well, I'm such a fan. I'm so happy to talk to you. This isn't really an interview we can do whatever you want. Oh, and now lost weight and question. I'm going to give you. Yeah. No. I'm just you're the car. Everybody name Pete. Okay. Pete on knew that like Sherlock. I didn't think he was going to tell me again. I know we're just dropping you into this. And this is Katie. Hey, Katie and the name had an aunt and Katie choose my favorite. Yes. Was a Catherine Katie no-no, Catherine. Oh, your name, Kathy. It's not Catherine. I'm Katie wasn't either. This was pop sister. Okay. Wanna pop assist, you know, pops head there were there were fourteen of them seventeen seven in his family. Yes. Or do they ran out of names they pops and my uncle whether that's too. So you know, down in Mississippi. Everybody has a Sears Roebuck can long. So new rent uncle came pumps was the last one to come on Caceres giving named him Sears. And when pops arrived in Roebuck, are they? No. Yeah. Yeah. True name them catalog. No. That is. And there was only one person out of all of our career who called pops by his. Yes. Yeah. And was leave on he'll get out of here. Yvonne him pops type buddies really I wanted so pops was the youngest of fourteen. Yes, he wondered if that's did you ever talk to. I we can't interview pops obviously. But do you think that's why? 'cause the youngest is often like the showboats in the Hammy as they want to shine through there the last of the party. That's all these other ones. I can't imagine what it would be fourteen. Do you think that's what drove him into being creative? I think so you know, I think and pops one of his brother, John and uncles they had already moved to Chicago when pops was like like eighteen nineteen and by this time pops. And my mother my mother Osceola, she was sixteen James, and you have a brother Purvis there. A lot of names the day. Just don't hear anymore. You got lucky or either they got lucky with unique names or you got lucky with Mavis every once in a while. Named me. I don't know where golly got may goalie the funday must continue. Yeah. Name the gully gully and names. I never met another Mavis until we went to South Africa. Is that right? Every other lady's name is the men would come on. Jeez. My wife is me. "Performance like when we were shooting the hunting of hill house. He called action. It was like just go when you're ready, and we'll just take it from there. And we did one take a you know that big monologues? Grint swin poppy in Libya are in the red room having Yuna rate the link dries that scene he really gave me full creative lions to do. Whatever. I I wanted to do in that. Felt as ING just be able to go in and play in that rarely happens with film because time is money. And you're racing. The clock you we had tons of pages to shoot he really on. I don't think I leave just because my can I have a personal relationship is. Well, like, I don't think I was particularly like special in how he treated me on. I think he likes to treat all of his actors no matter how well or little he knows them. He gives actors time to be able to go in and explore and find things and a real gift food was wanna give when I was looking for like, I want to promote our interview over the ahead of us a lot of them. But in Philly was no to that were like, and I feel like that's kind of a microcosm of your acting ability. I feel it you can do anything. I really believe that you can do anything and leave for a picture like they're all different. They're all kind of creative in there's no link to alike. I don't know. I feel like those kind of move yet your career's kind of what you're capable of you could pretty much do anything. I think as an actor, man. That's so kind. Thank you. You know, I just went to high school in Richmond Virginia, it's called colonial is high school in a win SCO give a talk on the acting the drama students there to their theater department. And we were talking about how difficult it is to navigate the entertainment industry because you are a product like you learned how to act in theater school in. It was all. About like, the Silivatere you're like created drive. But then when you get to LA or New York, you go into the business in it knocks the crap out of you because it's not about how good you are is how sell yourself, and I've had real trouble trying to being able to like hone in what I'm selling to the entertainment industry. You know? I think most actors, you know, you wanna play like a variety of ninety minute variety. You just wanna play hundreds of different kinds of people, but I'm still working on trying to. I don't know. So one thing and get good at selling things. So the business trusts me with other things. But yeah, I mean right now, my hair super short and Brown. Awning of hill house that was flapper girl in Brad. I can look really different says exciting. Yes, it's exciting. But I think also confusing to a lot of people especially with the my name differences, well, Catherine, Katie. Those kids had to be so sight to see you my God like. Were they could you see that? They're excited were the what type of questions did you feel from those kids? I mean, it was real of my best friends are Karen Gillan rose Mikhail ever Karen during zoo, but yet the vendors Jian grows as the lead of the show is on the amongst many other things is done. So I've gotten to kind of seeing how people react to them, you know, out in public or going to conventions with them they go in sign autographs and. All of this new of attention. I've been getting it's I mean, it's it's new and. It doesn't feel comfortable yet. You know, I feel like a imposter. Of the I guess it was good for them to be able to meet me expose like, I'm from Virginia to ties to the business and doing it. So yeah, it was specialty to connect with them than an highschool Sasha crappy times be..
