Sabatinis stylish dominance; Nadal and Federers 2006 classic

"Amy Thank you so much for your support and to everybody that bacteria kickstarter at the end of last year which enabled us to carry on all year long and produced the tennis podcast four. You hope you're enjoying it. We certainly are catherine say. Hello Catherine David. Hello Matt. You're right. Hello yes fine. Thank you good. We have had the most wonderful weekend watching old tennis matches from Rome which we are going to really have with you today from nine hundred ninety two. The story of Gabriella Sabatini is extraordinary. Run in Rome for titles in five years and also talk about how more generally she's one of those players that tends to get forgotten. I'm afraid to say including bias. I can't think of many times that we've mentioned the name Gabriella Sabatini over the last eight years of the tennis podcast. And we're going to put that right today. She also turned fifty as well over the weekend. So feels like a good time to do that. And we're going to go back to the two thousand six men's final between Roger Federer and Rafael. The Dow a dare say many more of you will remember that one and maybe some of you watched it with us over the weekend so lots to talk about before we do that. Let's just mention the news of the week. Which is that more? Tennis TOURNAMENTS HAVE BEEN CANCELLED UP until July thirty first on the ATP circuit and the events. The wheelchair events have been announced on the men's side tournaments like a start Baastad Kitzbuehl in Newport or cancel because of the corona virus. And we await to find out what will happen with the American swing in August. But I mean it doesn't sound great so we'll have to wait and see several WTI events until mid-july cancelled as well but no great surprise. I'm afraid Catherine I should say as well following on from songs that could be used for the corona era a particular mention for EJ Stanton on instagram. Who suggests don't stand so close to me from the police. Yep Yep acceptable. Yep that's yeah. I've heard that mentioned a lot of the lowest we were going for more. I don't want to diminish EJ's contribution that we were going. Ooh For more specifically songs that reference the absence of crowd right so rather than sort of general corona virus social distancing song bags which which I feel are. Is anyone else a bit over sort of Korean social distancing song just over the whole thing generally? It's a very very difficult time for cynical people with a dry sense of humor because there's a loss of well intentioned sort of sickly happiness in sort of we're all in this together in we'll come through this and have you considered crafting. You should be crofting. Oh we're GONNA come out of. This is best move well rounded people and you know people that then you bunny the. I'm so over all of that. This folks is Katharine Whitaker. Who has just shown irs her two thousand piece Jigsaw which makes two in a row that she's not together now and she's also about her fiftieth podcast to the air with two weeks worth of dailies to come during Roland Garros Peppy Catherine. Yeah but I'm not. I'm not smugly telling people if you considered podcasting it's it'll make you a better human being during these challenging times. Stephanie my better I have. You always Dunk Jigsaw. No I mean I have on occasion in over the years done the odds Dixon L- but nights definitely I. I'm not doing this to to self improve. I'm enough to pass the time. I'm just impressed. Because not cool or anything they might even be able to hear me through the wolves but my parents started kick those and they're really not very good at them. How can you be? How can you be bad at jiggles? Unless you've got bad eyesight you've done you've done about five of them in the space have been out of the night soaking souls. We're talking two thousand pieces. My parents struggling with five five hundred faces. Maybe they need help just handed over to my kids. If I was doing a jigsaw. There's no why upbeat during it because I just lose know these inch. It's IT'S GONNA sound like one of these awful peppy. People is the IT. It's it's very mindful. It gets me off my phone hawks. Group it it's very it's you can still sort of be watching the telly obviously not physique. And have something on the tally in the background. And be paying attention to it but it gets you off your phone sort of it. Concentrates the mind. Oh God I hate myself move on. Can Multitask is what you're saying? Awesome specifically cannot multitask. So I would say it's a nonstarter. Meanwhile folks we have been putting photos on social media channels of ourselves in one thousand nine hundred ninety two where possible because Matt didn't exist nine hundred ninety two and two thousand and six respectively Matt has created quashed a picture of a tennis magazine on which he as a child prodigy is on the front cover wielding his racket. Like Richard Gasquet aged nine. Except there's no strings in the racquet That's the away so walk away. A few people were taken in by it. It's my absolute probably favorite thing. That's ever happened to me. That people actually think I was on the cover of Tennis magazine. Age Ten it was just at Wimbledon in the. Lta Tent way you could go up and have your have your photo taken in front of a green screen. And they were then imprinted onto ace tennis magazine. And yes they put up there alongside the words the not a the future Wimbledon champion going to all future Wimbledon. Men's having experienced his game. I can tell you what could have happened to a young Merrin Chile church in appearance. Yeah not sure what to say about that. Well he he opened so I'd go with that. Yeah no great. I'm in favor of all. Comparisons to professionals plays a singular. Us Open title is not all Wimbledon. Titles there is it still in underachievement relative. I don't think we're actually doing any matches from two thousand seven for tennis relived. Who knows how long ten is live? We'll be going on. We may have to come to two thousand and seven at some point but I actually went back the following year and appeared on the front cover again. Let's just put it up as a sort of extra what the people working uniform and that one.

Federer: WTA/ATP Should Merge - our reaction; John Millman nearly retired, then beat Federer - our interview

"Hello everybody another tennis. Podcast for you won't we weren't planning to bring you a couple of days ago but you know we just can't get enough of this and the so much going on and yes okay. There's no tennis but the stuff to talk about and we've got an interview with Joe Millman for you so we'll have that later but Catherine is here. Catherine David Selamat had David and the reason. We're convening altogether now. Not just having the Joe Millman interview which had been the original plan until about four hours ago is about twelve twenty eight pm today. Russia Federa- tweeted and what he tweeted was just wondering am I. The only one thinking that now is the time for men and women's tennis to be united and come together as one at which point Catherine and I wanted whether this was a teaser to a bit of content that might be coming out between the two tours because they've been producing causes loss of that and then I thought it can't be that cooked because I mean we've had instagram and lives law but moments later he said I'm picturing a merger between the WTO and the ATP I'm not talking about merging competition underscores but merging the two governing bodies the. Wta that oversee the men's and women's professional tours it's too confusing for the fans when there are different ranking systems different logos different websites. Different tournament categories. It probably should have happened a long time ago. But maybe now is really the time these tough times in every sport and we can come out of this to weaken bodies or one stronger body. Now when you hear that when you read that out loud that is pretty strong stuff catherine and and have to. I mean okay. We've been moving towards that in terms of little bits of Combined content under brand of tennis united. And we've had a heard an interview that has been put our way by the of their new seat in the new chairman and drag at NC Talkin about more and more collaboration. But for Roger Federer to come out apparently unsolicited and just say it's time to merge the tolls that was bombshell stuff ready wasn't it behold this novel an exciting idea. Yeah it was pretty bombshell stuff. I mean obviously. It's a good idea. Obviously Reid you. The way you read out these tweets. That sounds entirely sensible great. Let's do it. I'm trying not to be Aussie and SNIFFY ABOUT CERTAIN ELEMENTS OF THE STORY. And the way it's developing and being told that is happening on twitter. I'm trying to be a bit. Socially distanced from tennis twitter. I say that with heavy equities because it makes me shudder a little bit But it can be a bit of a toxic place and I'm trying to not be embroiled in it but this whole story has dropped exclusively on tennis twitter sort of had to be reeled back in the sort of arms race to claim claimed territory and claim claim that. This was their ideal. This is the first time anyone had this idea. The facts that you know of one suddenly sitting up and taking native destroy quality when a man shouts about it. All of those things I there is a part of me that wants to be about the the. Oc posted me often wins. But I'M GONNA try and be utilitarian about it and think. Look if if this is how the right thing ends up happening then then fine you know and I'm I'm going to echo do some shadowing echoing into something that you're going to say in relation to a different issue Later in the POD. He's talking about the distribution of wealth and prize money among top level players which is now suddenly a a a burning topic or among plays in general and he says look. I can't believe it's taken a pandemic for for this to be taken seriously and for the real powers that be to consider addressing it. Will I feel exactly that way about the the unification of The governing bodies but hey it took countless examples. They were able to for the. Nhs happened say if the ends justify the means then great. I'm going to suppress for once my RC side. I slightly wants to be able to read that. Billie. Jean King's response on twitter to Roger Federer in the in the sort of tone of voice that you began that that line yourself because what she actually says is I agree and have been saying. So since the early nineteen seventies she. I reckon she didn't say it like that. I kind of wish you had. And then she goes on say one voice women and men together has long been my vision for tennis the WTI on its own was always planned. Be I'm glad we're on the same page. Let's make it happen Hashtag. One voice is what Billie Jean King replied with Samana. Halla Patrick Evita Gubbay. Meru all tweeted support for what Roger Federer had to say and then I found the Dow tweeted. Hey Roger Federa- as you know per hour discussions. I completely agree that it would be great to get out of this world crisis with the Union of men's and women's tennis in only one organization which yeah suddenly makes all of this same quite premeditated between the two of them will maybe more than two of them. We haven't had anything I should say on this subject from Novak. Chuck rich the president of the council at this point. But it doesn't feel like this is just some using that Roger. Federer has just done while he's bored in lockdown as such A. It sounds as though it's been given quite a bit of thought he's had this chat so we've been reminded of this press conference. The rough on the Dow was involved in in two thousand nine hundred Australian Open when he responded to questions about whether he thought that should be a combined organization between the deputy. Atp with just telling us a misunderstanding. So he doesn't didn't understand really why that would be a good idea why we should talk about that. Why why that should be on the agenda And so this is a very very different tone now. Obviously we weren't in the middle of a global pandemic at that point. The world looked very different. It may it may well be that people who had previously never given a second thought to a combined organization of Sydney. Actually th. That's the way out of this. That's a good idea and got to be ready for that. But it's it's pretty stark. Isn't it the difference in town? Yeah I mean elements of needles. Tweet genuinely made me laugh out loud. First of all any suggestion that Is Great is his. English is Spanish as a first language adult composed. Hey at Roger Federer as per discussions. I mean absolutely no way. Is That tweet composed by Rafael Nadal? Himself as per I've ever seen his tweets to Anna Ravenna. Vish venevision join twitter. He said I look forward to our discussions on this means of communication when it was back in the early days of twitter. It was really sort of formal. And it's like a tweet anyway. It kind of reminded me of that one. Yeah so I mean yeah I mean that's not anything. Groundbreaking is that. He didn't necessarily compose himself. And if I was tweeting in a second language I would probably ask for some assistance as well. We've got to eat so I'm not having a pulp about that. But it the the sort of the attempt to say this. This was my idea too. I this came from a discussion that we both had. I was in on this too. That made me laugh because yeah I mean he. He kind of gets a slightly on it from me included because I think I kind of write him off of somebody. That's just not not hugely engaged with the with the wider. She's in Tennessee. And he kind of mice to the time brushes off interrogation about them as sort of. Oh you'll have to ask other people that are that are better informed and have have moose stake in it than than me. I'm not the best person to speak to you. That that clip. That's going around on twitter from the loss. Jesus straighten open is a good example of that. But the fact is he. He hasn't been supportive of equality in In Women's Tennessee's very much market forces based approach T. V. Prize money in the tools etc. So yeah this is. It's a bombshell.

"You know I thought every rich person in the world would do it after nine eleven and and it hasn't happened and it's not really happening now. It is pretty shocking. I mean we even during the election even before this sort of in a way in a small way when you know during the election with Tom Steyer Mike Bloomberg or whatever it was like you're spending four hundred million dollars on commercials when you could actually people homes or send kids to school or give people food and now we're in a situation where people need actual tangible things and no one's like you said why aren't they giving their money. Stop spending money on commercials about trump and go right. Pay someone's grants like role. Do something you know. I mean just even the Jitsu for the morale of the nation to see that people who are able to in our country are stepping up. I wish that more. Would you know well? Let me just tell you this statistic for anyone who's who who doesn't know this one is always like so so chilling okay so for the difference between a million and a billion okay a million and a billion so a million seconds do you. Can you guess? Let's say how much a million seconds is no idea years. A million seconds is eleven days. Okay wow okay. A billion seconds. Thirty one years. Oh God Almighty that's something to think thirty one years so we're talking about even people with you know three billion dollars. This is horrible to say and I probably shouldn't say it but I'm going to say so when we did a thing. The other night for the Actors Fund Katharine mcphee and David. Foster whose worth hundreds of millions of dollars. They each gave a thousand dollars. I did instead. You should have seen your face because I'm sure I was shocked. I'm sure I I thought I heard one hundred thousand dollars and then I listened again. No Thousand Dollars. Thinks Catherine David Foster taking away. Catholic those towns. Aw is a you. I'm still here mean it was fantastic and you don't see much in love again here anymore. But Oh you can't hear you can.

"I think yeah and I think what people have been most critical of is the fact that currently the we're going to end the year with the team event and start the team that that too close together but also separated by by the off-season. It just doesn't feel quite right if you try to explain that to anybody outside tennis who doesn't understand. Understand the factions in the reasons for it as such as they are they would look at you as you'd lost the plot the US having Davis Cup in Nova late November or whenever it is mid November and then you S- six weeks later you're doing another one and you're still doing it nation against nation and they're completely separate and Stephanus. It's fast money will qualify apparently I. I read that he now is in because they found a player. I've had the the reeser plan now the he's able to partner with in order for them to enter the that's what I've read. Let me say if I can possibly find it for you on the this place. Hang on this down again have to scrolled on the plan but you need one ranking point right to to be because it's combined. It's like doubles. It's combined ranking so talk if I think them trying to get sit surpasses brother or wildcard into something just to get meringue but it's much easier said than done ranking point crikey yeah you have to be good. David got much but it isn't this in itself ludicrous that they've they've found stephanus it to pass a a human being with the pulse they can give a ranking point t mikhail curve lack Harris will have an A._T._p.. Ranking on Monday thanks to his career for his his appearance at the tournaments in Winnetka Challenger. He is Greek this. This will allow stephanus pretend to play the new way to be up somebody but anyway that's what I'm reading so two questions down thirty four minutes on the clock. We're the very well here on this to party this one final thing A._T._p.. Cup has ranking points and then picks dozen not on will underline that well Kris Okay Alex is next question is why are they not any or more openly gay active male tennis plays <hes> he says there's been no openly gay man on tour so in the open era in contrast to of the Time Great Spitting Jean King Martina Navratilova came out and they're more on the W._p._a.. Tour wise not happened in the men's game well. I mean it's a via a huge is a huge sort of talking point generally I mean and and I can't talk with one hundred percent <hes> conviction about it but having heard Brian for Harley talk about it and other people within within the sports <hes> I it's nobody has and it seems to me that there's a fading that people aren't ready for it or they're not confident enough to be able to feel comfortable in doing so and and as Kevin Anderson is said one once or twice now statistically it of course there are gay plays on the men's tennis circuit who have not come out because and why is that well. I can't definitively tell you but I would imagine that they don't feel that they're going Wanna be accepted feel comfortable being that locker room in and know that it's okay with everyone to to to not be treated differently in a way that they would be uncomfortable and Jeffrey one to read Charlie Equity Shares reports in a special report on which I think it was published at the start of this year I think it was in January where he'd been asking a lot of the players about about this exact question. Why has nobody you know multiplayer? Come out is gay and there were some quite concerning quotes in that pace from a lot of the players saying the same things like they'd be happy..

"How do you think the calendar needs to change limited changes? It always been easier question. If it were you can make to changes what would they be. What would the priority changes be? I mean I want I. I want to see a one brilliantly successful team competition for men and women combined. I think that would be the first thing I would want ahead of everything I agree with you. Yeah just something that has the feel of everything that we've loved about Fed Cup and Davis Cup over the years but which has common sense attached to it in a way that it can be marketed in and I mean there are some very good parts to live a cup. I'd love to get the good bits of Labor Cup into that team events but one that has this feeling of just you would put your life on the line almost two to win. It's in needs to be that level of importance. It needs to be something all the Plas- it's not even a conversation about whether they play same as the four grand slums of course we're playing. It's the World Cup of team tennis of course we're playing and at the moment you have this. I have people still saying to me. I don't know why you're going on about. Ill Davis Cup. We there was lots of places that played it. But why are we going to justify. This is ridiculous so it's already not good enough and then you have people who rightly Lord the Success Delay Cup but try so hard to ram it down your throat that this has to be immediately accepted the best thing since sliced bread right now well. There's lots going for it but it's it's not the solution on its own come together and figure it out on your heads together. Work it out but I I accepted. That's part of just so much of a wider problem of personal intra individual interests and already contracts that ring grain in the sport and how do you make things move in order to make it work D- like the idea will not idea dare I mean the the prospect of the Fed Cup being an April the Fed Cup finals being April. I think we so wedded to the idea of the the the team competitions finals being the end of the year that sort of felt inconceivable conceivable that they might not be but <hes> many I._C._F.. Announced that the Fed Cup finals would be an April. I sort of thought yeah that that does feel like a bit of a gap in the calendar on T.. V. You hold them in in Europe and obviously there's no guarantee three with Budapest I think and that was one of the things quizzed about the launch press conference cages does its position in the calendar in April mean it will always have to be in Europe pin that is potentially issue. There have to face in the future because you want it to be an international competition but April makes quite good sense to me and now the the the women's calendar is looking to be substantially an should he shorter than the men's calendar isn't it of course because you have Fed Cup at the end of the air and it's already shorter isn't it because the Schenn's N._w._e._a...

"She doesn't like it if somebody does mess around because she wants to play that metronomic style in her against SD counter at the Australian Open this year was just such a great match but it was two women standing toe-to-toe insane bring it on and there were going back and forth extrordinary rallies but nobody really was staying in variety and you can see players are able to get under a skin probably in a simulator how they can get to counter what I would say is that about a year and half two years ago I noticed McGrath was going to the net lot. Every time she decent groundstroke she was in there and I did like that tactic for her. Being tall woman didn't Martinez I think it was with both I think that they had decided for heads. Go in. I've noticed that as much recently but then I have I've just feel like there's just not being as much Gavin go about mcgrew says she felt as though she's not really with us at times in matches and I think that's really sad so I hope she finds a way because she's such a lot to offer tennis. Get benefit from from from her doing that. I mean we're we hear couple of hours off dismantle Alex on the Wimbledon title and discussing we've been discussing whether or not she could go on to dominate in discussing discussing earlier with can cheater <hes> Martinez about you know this means for F- applicable who she's she's still working within the fact that you know Klickovic should be watching what did did today in thinking that should be me doing that you know and I I want to be watching watching it in the same way thinking the same things but she doesn't feel shouldn't feel even in the Puska the bracket with the Cheetah Martinez Pronunciation which I've completely messing messed that up all through this podcast and several Lewis I always used to say Martinez and then something in my I got the YIP's. David laws hung out with me to an an interesting tangent to questions like this is. It's very difficult for us to recommend the coach for someone because there's so much more the boyfriend for somebody mystery exactly it's what call whatever goaded sent me if I can come up with a great night gay friend come on come on Gardenia. Get me on the team. Is You consult. You're saying I'd like to recommend boyfriends and girlfriends. I wouldn't mind being a coach could be good. What do you think what did you they? If if I was coach. Do you think she would do all right. She's already a world class players to slams coaches. That haven't been any good. I mean what you're she'd is. The one that springs to mind rules. He can play that he wasn't he wasn't two former player player so you think you'll see to know how to hit tennis balls but types of coaches on what did we think that could be sort of inspirational figure. Why are you saying it? I I don't think I._B._M.. Guth should be going after you okay. What do you think tennis and his podcast could? We'll deal with this later on say they don't reply to apply to she. Yeah what we've learned is if things time responding okay coming up and actually I'm not because I've got tennis broadcast to to present so sorry you're out of luck right Chris Question that one can seven we get question <hes> so the next one is if you could make unlimited changes to the tennis calendar. "And he finally managed to beat Jackovitch. But he's he's struggled to really make strides in the very top echelons of the game is very obvious. They're twenty thirteen Irena Kramer, Ceva women side go, so you're which Cici Bellis in the same year is Andris Andri Andre rube love twenty fourteen I know she's had some results, but she struggled a little bit to transfer. She. Well, it's going to be the the twenty seventeen year end junior bones were axel gala on desperate come through. Because I think tennis really needs a champion cooled axel. He on the basis of the little flag. I'm looking at is from Argentina and Whitney see who I've heard a fair bit about. In fact, I think she was a recipient of a wildcard in Miami say they're the two who we might be expecting if they all gonna break three to start hearing about coming up. But yeah, previously was me. She catch man of it. Of course, had a good breakthrough in Indian Wells on the men saw it. So. Yeah, I mean, unfortunately is just absolutely no guarantee whatsoever. If anything is sort of. Potentially the opposite. It's you know, has the potential to be bit of a poison chalice what it certainly cannot pressure concert on. And I do think that quite a few of these do feel Laura Robson was one of them. I it's it's a lot to take on radio this expectation interest in none of those apart from very none of the ones that we talk about today finished end of year number one in that we talked about in recent weeks, like OJ Alice C or Chiappa valve or Demel. I believe Chiappa follow certainly was number one. But you didn't finish year end number one. Yeah. I mean, I I suppose there is the kind of. The balance between the more success. They have is junior the less junior tennis. They play they start playing senior vents ineffable that genie ranking suffers a bit. But didn't how much that was at play. Also. Serena ravinus for an example in ref on the Dow to who didn't Obama had junior careers toll. They just went straight onto to the toll. You know? And then on the other side you've got federal with a with a year end. If certainly was union. Both Wimbledon singles doubles Sameer in say. Yeah, it's it's always interesting to follow the progress of these players, but there's absolutely no guarantees whatsoever. That the the number ones will become relevant even the upper echelons of the of the men's and women's games social media questions that have come in picked out by James Meredith. Phil boomy knowing who has asked the best male and female players that never wanna slam of all time. Oh, Marcelo Rios would be mine. Not Cellario Sierra. The guy was a genius. If you watch some some players games look a little bit old hat now. And you watch them, and I realized it's not that long ago that the real played. But it's yeah, you're going back twenty years when he was when he was world number one. He he he dominated in one thousand nine hundred eighty beat. He won any wells and Miami same year and Batangas in the final Miami. And it was such a shock to the locals that was and he went on then to win Monte Carlo and Rome, I mean, this is the sort of stuff he was doing and ran into call us at the French Open. Having already been in the strain open findings Pettit corden ninety eight and he was such an enormous favorite going into that ninety eight French Open. And was never the same again after that. But Thailand wise left-handed incredible ability Anglesey could do it all he had everything. And he wasn't all just he was just such a natural player, but an attitude. Did he had an awful attitude, and he was a nightmare today with I love today. I mean, I didn't think wherever going to get a a deep meaningful sit down with Masato rails. But I'd love to know. Really? Honestly, whether he has regrets Sner him quite a bit on the champions tour in latter years, which is quite interesting because how add some serious run ins would real steering ATP days in the night in the late nineties when he was world number one..

"I think it makes most sense most is one thousand level particularly the longer events like in the MOS and Miami where still bestest reset tennis. But you have a lot of days off and Daniela Hantuchova saying she used to hate having days off at the the bigger bigger longer events because she felt like she lost her rhythm. And that was why she played so much doubles. So I'd be surprised if we saw them play a lotta. Doubles at grand slam level. And I realize without being best of five sets that. That poses different challenges. But most is level may be the other tournament. I think biolog- greater casino winning is winning that winning feeling a Kate might be slightly reduced if you're getting it on the the double school, but it still winning and it still confidence and these things that you can't magic out of thin air. And and I don't think it's any accident that was saying quite a lot of an increased level of variety from the younger guys, certainly any creased willingness to introduce variety into the game. And I think that's that's great news. Absolutely. Great news Chiappa valve is he's determined to to play with variety. Now when he started doing that he's his follies weren't up too much determined to keep doing it and keep learning. Keep learn. Running the sort of instincts of being the net. And you know, he's still not federal yet. But he's he's improving has improved a lot and doubles playing loaded. Doubles will only any help that Moore should also be said that Roger Federer was not Roger Federer when he first started out in terms of his comfort at the net. Remember federal if you look back old videos of when he played Wimbledon in one thousand nine two thousand two thousand one you watch the match against Sampras he serves volleys first and second serve every single time. Does Roger Federer back then because that's what you do. Right. That was before they slowed the courts down that spy before Lleyton, Hewitt's, David Nalbandian reached the final. He it was only latterly that he started staying back because he started to realize that he could win that way. And obviously if you go back ten years before that Jim Courier started staying the back after. Second serves because on dragons he had won Wimbledon by staying back in returning incredibly well in career, also go to the final. But and so I tell you point today, I think that Chiappa valves volleys will improve. I think sit surpass appears am unload to get to into the technicalities because I simply don't understand the well enough because I'm not an expert, but since the past seems to have a comfort level at the net. Already an an assertive intent to get to the net. So these are all good fats. I think you're right. I think doubles will definitely improve those. I think they are a great point about the responsibility for the variety that we're now seeing or contributing towards it my concern over over this is that there are a few players who played singles and doubles in in recent years. You mentioned Daniella is one of them. I also think you could question whether it is cost them, and whether the whether it's worn them out, whether if you actually looked at the. The result side-by-side now, you don't have a comparison level to sail. Well, that plast stops playing doubles necessarily started playing better singles, although Caroline Garcia. I think had her best singles results, she got. She won the finals when she wasn't playing doubles. You may remember she gave it up for a while. But I love the idea of it. I love the idea. Whenever torts Joe jury or Martina Navratilova role. Joe mackinaw or any of these players. They always talk about how doubles was the best practice. They could have had. And they all think that everybody should do it. I don't know. How sustainability is if you want to be the very best singles player that you can be. I'm just not sure. Well, just us John Mike, and I think different pens. I think it depends with you adjust your practice accordingly. Daniela Daniela does have regrets in terms of overtraining and the stain ability of the eventual sustainability of her career in injury management and stuff, but she doesn't pin any event on the doubles..

"I found that really fascinating. So that's the sort of interventionist attempt to even things up and not perpetuate domination by the. The top teams. So you don't get that at all in Premier League football in the to you. You see I I've been watching a lot of NFL over the last year and hearing about the draft in the way, they do it just just as you described there. And I'm really fascinated now to watch the draft is to see what this rubbish team might get into this amazing player. Coming into and. The amazing plays sort of have a look of disappointment until Neff as like oh hoping hoping to go to the Miami Dolphins, and I'm off to light Utah. Utah have an American football team. Do they know m b eighteen that cats right inside? We'll go on G knew that is that tree. What what would the Utah teams name being American football the Lake City Saracens? Okay. Think of nineteen giggling, David tennis podcast king. I'm giggling good off topic, Utah Jazz, and I should add. But which doesn't really roll off. I was hoping it would anyway, what do I think about it? Is it better to have four stunning players who dominates depth? Oh, that's it's such a tough one to answer because I'm thoroughly enjoying the variety at the moment on the wind sec. I really am. But ultimately, I I do feel sport benefits from having an ongoing narrative and soap opera type field. I mean, we see in in boxing at the moment, which is excruciating in the way makes its biggest performance of void each other. At the moment. You've got Tyson fury, Anthony, Joshua and Deontay wilder just having fights against other people. When L anybody wants to seize them fight each other in tennis. I think sometimes we almost have too much of a good thing. The fact that you had over forty or fifty match between Jaakko Vicente Dow, maybe it's important for them to be missed occasionally. But I'd rather have it that way. Draw? I'd rather see the best taking on the best regularly. And therefore, I think it's it's difficult for us as media. And I think it's it's more difficult for fans generally to invest in a player who isn't doing it very often and to try to get excited about some money, and they do they have a big achievement. And then they just got missing. I think our all I think you only have to look the the route hell's that the ten the tennis is in at the moment. And I do think it is in great condition and think that those dominating players as long as this group of them one on their own. I agree Michael Schumacher back in the day. I think it was problematic. Tiger Woods was offensive him in as as a as a sports leader. But I do think a group is the best an oligopoly Charlie says, yes, he eases the. Wonderful. He ends on the wonderful analogy of tool rose on this week in Charleston. Among with the prospect of the fifteenth and sixteenth winter of twenty nineteen the chaos has been thrilling, but like a teenager left to their own devices. Suddenly yearning for the parents to come home. It's time for some sort of order to be restored. Yes. Well, so Charlie good pace, call to read the whole thing. So next question from K is it unfair for top player to enter to fifty events where they're like dominate just so they can hit milestones. Ks points..

"I think it's lovable the situation we have at the moment, and David I think you do with it brilliantly, and you commentary on BT when when you have what looks like an absolutely gripping on cool coaching exchange, and as a commentator, you just have to say, well, it looks like we've just had an absolutely gripping and inciteful on coaching exchange. I can't tell you anything that was. Said in it because unfortunately, it happened in Kazak. But yeah, if you speak, I the Philly beats it is ludicrous. It is absolutely ludicrous. And so I know it takes money to resolve. But I I can't think of money better spent you know, if jobs worth doing do it properly if you're going to stand by having on coaching, and I think there are lots of. Lots of things going for it is something that you can I see a lot of arguments in opposition as well. But if you're gonna stunned by it do it properly. Well, I agree. I think we're in agreement. Right. So we okay. There's your first question. That's fourteen minutes to answer you enjoyed it. Here's your second. One. Is it better for the sports to have four outstanding players who dominate or have a range of players competing more evenly. And I suppose you would look particularly at the women's taught just at the moment where we've had what is it fourteen different champions, the first fourteen invents the year, and whereas overseeing the men's tour and to a historical extensive in the past in the moon's till when you had Serena particularly dominating what what do you prefer? What do you think is better for the sport is such a person in question? And in fact, there is an article examining exactly that can unjam by Charlie who show into today's telegraph. There is the headline is tennis. Equitability this year has been thrilling. But when does a sports become to unpredictable headline. I'm going to read. Ks list of questions, and I thought hang on a second. You should be. Maybe you should be writing in the telegraph everybody going reach article immediately after you finish listen to this podcast and oversee down at all the rest of coupla. But Catherine what what's the gist of what he came to that that I mean, basically, the the the big four era in the men's game to the post ten years has provided the the paradigm full full perfection in terms of level of competition. Which I'd say, it's true. He says it's a he said defining precise promises for what makes us booting era. Great is not easy with our few common. Themes may Sylvia's is that having one dominant team or individual is rarely much fun. You know, you see Pete Sampras or Liverpool in the seventies money knighted in the nineties, the idea that monopolies like these are bad is so entrenched in uh sporting subconscious. And this is really interesting point the America active steps have been taken to prevent them for a nation. That is the poster child free trade capitalism. That always communist attitude to sport remains a curiosity. But that is the situation in the NFL where the selection order for the all important college draft is determined by reversing the previous season's rankings..

"Okay. Nncholas on Facebook says why is there a movement to remove Chris commode is it because some place still want to split into a player's union tournaments union. And the only way to bring about this is radical change. The main reason that they won't rid of Chris commodities because of plays wanting as much money as they compulsively get and as much say over everything they can possibly get, and yes, I think ultimately those that are dissenting are in favor of a sort of pleasure union, or at least a bigger say overall of what goes on generally they want a bigger slice of the grand slam pie. And they talk about how much money the grandsons earning a net percentage of it is not that high relatively speaking. The issue for the role of some night. Chris commode is that he is. Running an organization which fifty percent by tournaments and fifty percent by plas- both of whom inevitably don't have the same goals and disagree and clash, and he is the deciding vote between the two so it's frankly, a pretty impossible job for the most part too because to keep both sides happy certainly and yet you've got to try and find a way to just. Keep going along together. And personally. I think he's I've seen a few see as the pay Mark Miles at individuals. The light. Brad drew it for a short while. Can't remember the champs name? Adam simply anyway, not that memorable. Chris commode has done it for number years now. And he I think is is kind of perfect for it. Really? He's he's he's been there five years. He's he's brought a new title sponsor into the tour finals after Barclay's left NATO came in. He's he's he look at the prize money at the slam is the way it's risen the, you know, these. It's again, thirty thirty five thousand pounds losing in the first round. Now, you know, you winners are getting to two million plus a note. Maybe it's not the biggest slice of the the overpower other. No. But how much do you want? Keep it moving forward de really need any more instability. You get in your pick-up. I mean, I don't see I don't see what the problem is. I think all of the movements against miss Chris made miss comed- Chris made. Fundamentally misguided. I think what they are is movement against the structure of ATP. As governing body, which does have a conflict of interest at its heart. But I think it's a complete misdirection to think that anything to do with Chris commode is an individual because he's just walking the tight very that is. The defining feature of that job because the way the organization is structured, so I finding somebody else would do. But she want to rip the thing up and start again. Yeah. Which does a decent argument for that. All these structured organization as many governing bodies in tennis. But the to talk about it something sort of specific personal about the way Chris commode made about that job. I find I find bizarre. Because because if he were more players intrigue all the tournaments would be talking about. Hey, let's get with Chris mode and have tournaments. He's always been regarded as as somebody who the players get on with over years the queen's when he's told him director that was that was one of the big things, you know, is in his favor all the players love him. Because he talks them any new hats to maneuver to deal with them, etc. In terms of starting again. I just yeah. It's a nice idea. But. Again, who's really going to sort all that out in at a time. When shortly stability would be better to the lead code on serves dot, and he was tearing up the home. And hold administrative structure of tennis ROY Moore question than what we got. From ground. He says is this the best time you can remember to have an interest in the women's game. He says, it's so hotly contested. There's nothing to choose between a lot of players. "But basically, this is what I cost to play non mandatory. And it's quite funny when when plays burst onto the scene, and you need that be begging for world code into collies. And the next year. They'll be demanding, you know, some stratospheric figure to to even show their face and lose in the first round. So that's always an amazing prices to get in. And there I think there are instances if if play it's not entirely mercenary and cruel hearted plays that that feel a loyalty to tournament play tournaments that have given them a wild card in the past. And they just want to play their to repay some kind of faith. That's been shown in them. There are examples if not entirely mercenary behavior about it. And yet it is quite quite. Is it is it is a member? I do have a sporty twenty years ago. Now, I remember one plan I at a tournament with a particularly vocal and fairly strong minded tournament director and the player lost first round and didn't play well and came off the Cohanim Bisi left and the the tournament director told the journalists right afterwards, I'm not gonna pay him now after that forms and the pleasure said, no, no he has to pay and this. Yes, this became quite a quite a standoff. So, you know, you don't hear that sort of thing very often. But yeah, I mean, it's it's difficult to to give other than Catherine's given a good. Overview of all. He does very from inventor and. Okay. Next one from Peter who says with a lot of passion. When will the let serve finally be abolished? We're in so many great serves and wastes so much time. Wittig family what's up 'cause we wasted about a day in a half fervently debating this the other day is if none none of us have anything better to do with our lives. What were the sides being taken? Well, it was my brother approaching it in a in a very m sort of statistically philosophical way. Just sort of saying, you know, it doesn't getting rid of the getting rid of the that cooled unserved doesn't. Does that answer tennis too? I mean, what wise why is everybody I'm giving an absolutely awful account of his argument. I feel like I should scroll back through the various the various tennis related spats. We've had to find the chain of the basically, I think it is a really weird anomalous thing in tennis. And if you got rid of everyone. Oh, yeah. That was city doesn't seem new have just bring more luck in the sport. Do we want more lock in the sport? God, it's like the family. What's up all over again? But in real life. Do we want? Yes. This is this is where the chat went. You're reminding me now having horrible flashbacks. Do we want more lock in the sport? Matt Dimbleby or my experience of the no let rule in operation was in the juniors Australian Open, and it's it's actually quite funny. When there's a let serve two drops rather than properly Ping's type, it almost becomes like a dropshot serve and suddenly the players have to scamper forward and try and get it. And it's rare that it does happen on the case. It does is quite fun than there. Anything would be if it happens on a match point or something. But that's just because we're not used to it. I think we'd quickly. We we will have that period of reheard that chair food just didn't even just competing forgot that it was in action. And you know, so then the mattress over and he didn't realize. But yeah, I I think he could absolute get rid of it. Now, I might be overestimating Pete Pete, Peter peaches level of interest in this. She's the benchmark for fitness on the women's side and slams her Sali's now that doesn't mean you win the move ahead of several anchor. Yeah. That can change again, Sabah linka twenties, and she she can still improve. So you can Asaka currently naming soccer is the benchmark and slams the host Elise. I trying to think if I've ever seen her play on clay, and I'm not sure it certainly identity I ever have in the flesh. So, you know, I don't know. I don't quite how to feel about whether she'll be the favorite into the French. But that's me is the suit of the default state of play in the women's game at the moment. Look, I can't I can't get as much as like to Asaka has shown again another level. This Australian Open not only in her mentality because she showed real mental strength now in two straight slams in all sorts of difficult situations. But her game is adaptive as well. Not only does she have this power show understands the game. She understands what to do almost instinctively against different types of players. The the range of play. But she she she's showing me something that gives me pause for thought on that. But I like the attitude of Katie sworn a lot and the most of Murray's Wimbledon last year, which she won three that I much of the top of my head remember here against but was very impressed with her. She's good a real feistiness about on the court. I don't feel like I've seen enough of Casey's one of the senior junior. And she was she impressed me, they're lighter. She got a great fighting spirit. Good move. She has had injuries since then how does that game? Translate to the senior game. I probably go with Boulter based on what she did straighten open. I I noticed also she she qualified in Petersburg straight afterwards and beat Bernarda para who's a good plan. Who's beaten come to before, you know? It's I always feel that's important. Can you have a result? And then you back it up like that. And she sat showed more at the Australian, I've GB Katharina Makarova. That's a good win. She showed a lot more than than I would have expected. I I was wrong about. Sunny in the short time about her potential. I didn't think she was as good as that. And it was. Yeah. It was impressive. What what she did it strain open? She's obviously just proper power natural power. Help just helps you translate into the game. So I'd probably go for her. But I don't feel like I know enough about swans game yet to really form the proper opinion. It's it is a worry, isn't it? When when plays the so injury wooded so young I'm in my my last memory of katie's one of the US open with she was day with a foot in a boat. Wasn't she at the international tennis writers event that they hold their? And of course, she she wouldn't she stretch it off from from her qualifying match here at the Australian Open this year wasn't seri-. It was dramatic. But not you don't expect makes me. I mean, they're continue examples, but Tanasugarn orchestra example, the world is fi lady potential of one injury led to another injury in. They seem to be seem to be in a sort of chain reaction of injury in it. It can for reasons. I can't quite explain go that way. So that is a concern. I hope I hope that that's not the case for her. And she can have a good run at certain pair. Okay. Gyms next one the final one from Jim is do you think the Davis Cup finals in Madrid? This year will be well attended or could spectator apathy force rethink. I think there will be great atmospheres at times, I think when Spain play or be fantastic sands the wants to play. I think there will be some nations that bring great followings. Maybe maybe it's quite convenient for. And I guess the bene- Hannah promoted and all those things I think that will be fantastic moments during the Davis Cup, but I wouldn't expect it to be blanket full houses. I just I would be surprised if that were the case I, but is, but I'd be surprised. Yeah. I mean, I think I've said it before on the the. That's one of the venues one of my biggest worries the to the reinvented Davis Cup because of experience at that venue in it that the the Madrid masters men's and women's combined event has so much going for it's brilliant. But the venue just somehow isn't quite right. Even when it's at capacity, it kind of feels empty it. It's a very unforgiving arena. Which is the absolute opposite. What you want for Davis Cup? I agree with David. I think that it will they will get good crowds in times..

"No inquest such it was just an acceptance that jock Richard played well on that day or whichever fun. It was. Don't feel like you'll be able to look serve in the eye and say, it's okay. Because there is no carry what what he put up day and. Very assuming these getting that kind of Pepito needs to tighten it on the chin, and he needs to learn because it keeps happening it keeps happening. And it's if he wants to if he wants to chief what he believes he's capable of. And what most of us have chalked tonight in being able to. But one time you copy losing six one six one seven six two millers ranch in that manner. Much is good player. Is you two to six one sets? It's not enough. It's not acceptable. So I think they'll get through the end of the year Matt's, but we'll wet and say there after okay? Well, you make should meet us ranch. Gyms next question is about him after after an encouraging run at your spreading open. He's meals ranch. Now, one of the favorites for Wimbledon this year, in your opinion. Now, he he's in the bunch behind the absolute favorite for Wimbledon. Is that joke? Rich, Roger Federer is. With refunded out probably next. I would say I can't really think of federal headed Nidal then you'll never Walson records Roger Federer's five-set loss to Kevin Anderson in the last one and ref on rich in the semi finals losing ten I the fifth. No, I don't I don't have to based on recent history and the form that Roger Federer is being in recently and do. This. This will five months until Wimbledon said we have to look at it in a sort of macro way deadly. I I don't think I don't think he is ahead of Nobel digress. From the scintillating subject of males around inch. And prosper. I would put at this stage. And we all five months out five Five months months out. out Jovic is the favourite federal is the second favorite. And then. The goal is just behind that. And then there's a crop. And I probably would him as one of the leaders of that crop provided his fit and healthy. Which is absolutely no way. It given me less rounded Shamin niece had more injuries than Dennis and. They're, but they're all just bodies the whole together embodies that don't, you You know, know, I I know. know there are certain things even over the new control too. T- to limit all of that. But some people are just gifted in that sense. And unfortunately, he's no is aiming those roundish bless him. But, but yeah, put him is one of the leading the leaders of the chasing pack. That's worms court still funded quite curious around. It's through in that performance against Luca. Capri very good going seem to be saying that he got no strength left in his legs as as maybe renar gas, really. Maybe a little bit the way the Dow talked about himself not having had a lot match BIC bit of a curious one that he needs to he needs to foolish season between now I think to get too hard. And again meme sauce, I'm vanishes playing. We can we count and playing that consistency. Broken down husband. So so whole lot of ifs. But I mean, if those if come to fruition what would spill and repair odds because we're with no. That is about sixteen to one or something like that. Yeah. He's still. He's a decent. You might might get you might even get twenty or something like that. Because I don't think people really talking about him at the moment. It's just that. We know having seen a lot of 'em. We now reach the final. And we know would he be a head of Kevin Anderson? Oh, he might not in sort of bookies tonight. He not because Anderson more recent women and finally say. But I think I would put him ahead of him. Yeah. As long as it's fairly fit. I think he's the better grass-court player overall of the two I think. Yeah. I think I think round next would be. Probably about fifth favourite or something like that. If he was fully Fettes centering him had like Zara. Sheriff.

Kevin Anderson Roger Federer Matt millers ranch jock Richard Dennis Luca Rich Dow Shamin Fettes five months five Five months

"Listener questions specials here on tennis podcast, which is kick started by Yuguy is specifically in this particular addition by Jim Boyle, who is one of our guest editors. So what he's done is. He's sentenced some of his questions. He's chosen some of the very best of yours that you posted at tennis podcast on Twitter and at the tennis podcast on Instagram. We're face because. Well, he's busy picked the best ones you've sent in. And we're going to answer them now. All right. So Matt's got the questions fire. Okay. So the first one is of the two disappointing slams under his charge deserve at. What point does even Lendl? Throw the towel in. I'm Willie see how Twenty-nine teen Willie throw the town nuts like Dimbleby. Do you think you'll throw the talent? Or did. You think do you think he probably three the towel atom? We'll we certainly that full thrones defeat to meals roundish together all sending most of it. We watched the most horrifying boats of it. Together from his perspective. And I also do exactly that because I think. I think. It's so coaches and plays talk about. The stuff, but it's not it's not about results. It's about the process and process in progress and all of that. But with very specifically about the results, isn't it? And if the results aren't coming, and there isn't even any improvement in the results. I don't know. It's it's the balance between frustration and pride isn't that? He wants to stick with him long enough. The the his pride isn't damage by having failed. Equally to be wanting to to throw to coaching Cridland throwing good money off the bad name. So just keep thinking if I keep keep staying keep doing what I'm saying. It's bound to pay off mmediately, which is what we're all guilty of thinking, this, isn't it just is bound to happen. It'll it'll come or do feel Lindell wants to give it enough time. So that we can fail is he's given proper chance, and he has been heard and hopefully from his vantage point made a difference that makes the difference that haven't been set remember still about this brief after the year. So we were we were sort of taking about his defeat there and still compared how he made an immediate impact on Andy Murray. Remember, we had grown even is on the podcast, you're in the the strain open. He was questioned the chemistry and talking about how I'm the marine Marineland. But just. Perfect fit. And he's not convinced this one necessarily will be I would be surprised if they would split before the end of the air. I certainly think we will see another three slams out of that partnership because I think that that there's a meaningful amount of time again now to debrief after the Australian Open, and then it gets into the other slams bet I'm far from convinced. Yeah. There's no reason to begin safe oaks as its results based love to be a fly on the wall into see that dynamic. I think it probably depends on something which is unknown to us, which is how much he's being heard. How much is very listening unites. Lendl might be saying the right things is very it's not listening. All. It could be other things. But if he feels he's being heard, and the anti cheats, were etc suspects. He will hanging on than than if he just feels that. I can see said that about Jovic. Didn't he starts the children? I had did that interview with me. He said. Jovic is convinced the arket bring him something in and I didn't really think I could. And in the end, you know, we sort of went hearing one another and what's the point in that? So yeah, I if you haven't listened to ready to go and even vich is thoughts Jim in one of our Australian daily pods. I would point to that. Because he was pretty pretty punchy on that subject to news. Nice more about coaching player dynamics than than we do. Yes. I do recall that one or two Vanya Murray's losses, including slam. Final losses amend the one here in or they'll starting I've been twenty thirteen he was very quick to to say to Andy Murray. Look it happens. Don't worry about it. There was no massive debriefers..
