Book Banning (MM #4055)

"The mason minute. With Kevin mason. Book banning has become a hot topic over the last year or two as more and more governmental bodies attempt to ban books. In fact, according to the American library association, 729 materials were challenged last year, most of which targeting books featuring black or LGBTQ characters. Yes, it has to do with red politics and blue politics, but in Texas, one state lawmaker requested the public school libraries disclosed whether they held any of the books on a list of 850 books about topics including race and sexuality. It's startling to see, so what are libraries doing? In Brooklyn, New York at the Brooklyn public library has announced that young people across America can register for a free digital library card, which gives them access to a bunch of banned and challenged books. We had book banning back in my day, stuff like the catcher in the rye was banned because of the drugs and drinking. Times sure have changed, haven't they? And I don't know if and when that's going to change again.

"catchers" Discussed on Wild Business Growth Podcast

"They are all by brands and You know it's incredibly hard to get anyone to wear something that you're gonna tell them you're gonna protect arguably the most important part of their body with a low that they've never seen in a design they never seen and say. Hey trust me. I want to keep you safe and these are athletes. So it's incredibly hard but you know we found the right one and You know the rest is history. And it's amazing the growth you've had in the league. That is a huge sell to get pro players to use a brand that they probably have never even heard of before heaven. Were your biggest selling point sir. The selling point. I had i had to get on one athlete first. And then it had. He had to get hit and yediot multiple times than that he had to talk to other catchers. Because not only did we not give any mass away. But they'll bought bottom so either players bottom the agents bottom teams bottom weeden. I did not give away one mass for free so you're in the unique area of wanting to protect players but also needing some players to get hit kind just as proof early on as well the interesting a very interesting place to be and down in front of a agents who want three mass for their players so they can try it out and then my answer has been the same no and they're talking to me because their players has been hurt before You know when. I first started out. I've known talked me And then low level agents are entry level agents with talk to me And then we start getting into some agencies with with major league players so you know and now it's the now now. We can build the hall the phone and call. You know we're gonna get to talk to someone so it's a really a unique experience going through that whole process. I'm actually wearing the defender mask right. Now it's great for podcasting as well so you can stamp that certification on there. But let's talk about that maso kind of your prized jewel crown jewel. I don't think prize jobs even a thing. Now as is the defender mask which i know you have kinda than traditional catchers umpires mask format as well as the hockey format. It's got some really really cool features that help to absorb the shock and is literally designed to be able to take and reduce the impact of hundred mph fastballs which is like if you've ever seen a video up. Close of one hundred mile per hour fastball. It's kind of tricky. Because you can't even really see the ball. It's that quick so what was involved in coming up with his right design. That looks good feels good but most importantly is protective It's a it was a long process. In fact i mean designed it. Because i'm an unpire so designed it you know with my umpire knowledge in mind so the original had four sets the spring assemblies. And i was able to get this in front of david. Ross with the winners of playing with the red sox in two thousand fourteen And he had a problem with the spring something on the side He said it kinda got in his way and me being empire. I'm saying no you're wrong. It didn't it can't it can't possibly michael dramatic Happens to be the athletic trainer at the red sox. He pulled me aside and said hey he's getting good information either. Take it or or get out of here..

"Without going to congressman Greg Steve from Florida Republican congressman hit a monster home run last night the congressional baseball game Congressman you miss Ron DeSantis at all He was a great baseball player Now governor he was I think he was a House district 6 or something in Congress He was a great baseball player too though wasn't he before he became the governor of Florida Yeah and we didn't So he was running for governor when I was running for Congress So we didn't overlap I didn't have the opportunity to either work with him here in Congress or into you were in the Senate right If you were in the Florida Senate at the time is that right I was in the state Senate Yeah yeah he's a big miss So let me ask you this I was a baseball player Myself and I love baseball I grew up around baseball my thing So I do want to ask you a couple of political questions Obviously I don't want to waste your time but seriously will you look in fastball Did you know that there was no hook coming Did you know this was fastball and you're like I'm zoned in right here and I'm just crushing this thing as it comes down to 5 Well what's interesting and a lot of people didn't realize this because so Biden had just gone into the Republican Douglas And I was next up starting the inning off and I was also pitching So I came up came around the plate and the umpire kind of motion for me to go into the box And I asked him I said there is a ton of press and all these people on the field and I literally said to him I said if I had a foul ball and it hits the president in the face it's going to be your fault And the catcher who's a Democrat was like hey sovereign immunity And then I looked at the picture and I said are you ready to go And the picture Aguilar is like yeah go ahead I'm like all right so if you watch the video feed they were actually having the video on the president and the Republican dugout and then it quickly turns as I get up to play to the plate and the pitcher starts to throw It quickly clips to that So I'm just happy that I completely distracted the entire stadium because everybody was focused on Biden in the Republican dugout because the Democrats wanted to see what the Republicans were going to do And the Republicans were just watching him down there And you hear this you hear me hit the shot And everybody's attention turned from Biden to the field and it was just kind of funny that I was able to completely distract the entire stadium for what was happening on

Maybe you could afford the hammock from elle decor see. I'm helping you out okay. I did find some information out about hammocks said they go back to the mayan days. Long ago the mayans actually weaved some hanoch that they were hanging up in the trees there to get away from i. I don't know other minds. Anyway where's the big one. I was talking about the world's records right the big one. Well the big one is in north carolina. It's forty two feet long. It uses ten thousand feet of rope actually over ten thousand feet. So i could be ten thousand one. I don't know but yeah It can hold up to eight thousand pounds so maybe you your friends. Your car could all go hang out on that hammock in north carolina. Just a little there in head. It'll be it'll be like National influence vacation. You can head to the world's largest hammock it's rat catcher's day national rat catcher's day and what is this it's the myth of the pi-pipeline of i said tytler. Wow i cannot talk today. The pied piper of him. Lynn is what we're talking about today. So here's how the story goes. The town of hamlin. Germany was infested by rats. The mayor promised pay the pied piper handsomely to rid the town of rats. This is before like ortho and all those other pest control companies. They didn't have those back then so they had to have applied paper. I guess anyway. How did he do it. He played his flute. That's it. He played a magical flute. And all the rats left town. They followed him as he played and did the music all the way down to the river. The rats like that music so much. They followed him in to the river. And there you go. The rats are got out of hamlin And i guess the piper made a pretty penny. That's something you don't want to say very fast because then you can screw that up like i screwed up pipe ler early. Yeah okay. it's national refreshment days well and Of course you know you've got to get coffee you've got beer. You've got soda but drink your water. Yeah you would think by listening to the show today. And the amount that i'm stumbling. Maybe i add something refreshing. Okay don't do that during the show. wait until after. Let's start with our events in nineteen thirty seven today. Franklin roosevelt tried to really well. There's no nice way to put the packed supreme court so that he could get Basically his challenges against the new deal policies just kind of washed away he. He really wanted to get everything past and he decided that you know what. Let's pack the court as much as possible. So he was going to. The bill did not pass on this day would have granted powers to him to appoint additional justices to the supreme court For maximum six for every member of the court that was over the age of seventy so he could have put a lot of people in there and actually the thing. is you know. We're talking franklin roosevelt. Here he actually did put the most amount of people in the supreme court over time but no. He didn't get to do it in this way that was denied by the senate. Okay nineteen sixty nine on this day. Aretha franklin was arrested for disturbing the peace in detroit. Okay check this out little minor traffic accident. Too cop show up. Supposedly aretha tried to slap onto the cops. You know doing the josh thing and well anyway. She was arrested and then released on fifty dollars bail but then when she left the police station. She decided run over a roadside. Probably not the best idea can have respect for the roadsides. Yeah i. I knew that one wasn't going to go over. Well nine ninety-four on this day o. J. simpson pled absolutely one hundred percent. Not guilty to murder charges. The trial wouldn't begin until january of the next year. And then one hundred and thirty four judge lance ito days later he was found not guilty and he would later lose the civil trial in that case all right. Let's take a look at one of our birthdays or today singer musician just all around break. Don henley's birthday today. Okay so you don't hanley right. It's one of the founding members of the eagles yelp found that in one thousand nine hundred seventy one. The was lead singer on desperado hotel. California lotta great songs. Well he went solo in the band broke up in nineteen eighty and then also release songs like all she wants to do is dance boys of summer into the innocence. You know all these great just classic songs but where did he come from. Well he was born in a small town in texas i. He was gonna play on the high school football team but he wasn't that big of a guy so it was coach suggested the band. The coach said Go for the band anyway. he did. He played trombone and then moved over to cash in session and then while in high school he was asked to join a dixieland band. The next band came along and it went through. Several names and not ban. Actually grew favor with kenny rogers. The country singer and chicken guy. Well anyway they changed the band. Several names They ended up with shiloh. Kenny likes the band and wanted to produce one of the album..

"I don't know there's necessarily a veteran's minimum above minimum in mlb But so keep an eye on brown and see if he ends up with a contender. Because i that's something that i could absolutely see happening That's really all we've got this week. the big news was pitchers and catchers reporting spring training. And then a bunch of guys. Signing like i said to get get to the deadline to reveal the report to spring training on time. And you know part of the actually. Look this up today. Because i was curious Everybody has to quarantine for five days before going into spring training. So i wonder if that's part of the reason we see we saw all these guys make signing these deals last week because they want to know where they're going gonna go and where they're going to quarantine before they report to camp Especially pitchers There's only let's yes i have. Matt harvey is really the only pitcher on this list. So only guys reporting early. Who is gonna miss. Maybe a day or two of spring training and probably not even that just because a win. That deal was signed last week. That he's he's got a few days to go so he'll be a quarantine enough time to get into camp on time Before we go. "And then we've got the astros the as I put nineteen. pm eastern time. It looks like that's i'm assuming that's supposed to be ten pm eastern time 'cause i never use military thome my phone that will be ten pm eastern time So i guess if you don't have mlb tv you want to watch something besides your team. You've got plenty of opportunity for me. I'm gonna be i'm in arizona so that's gonna be pacific time zone by then so it looks like gonna be having baseball at Ten from ten. Am until i guess about the time that i go to bed. So that's a neat little thing that's going to be a lot of fun For those of us on the west coast mountain time zone pacific time zone. Wake up watching baseball then. Watch we go to bed. That's going to be a funday. it's gonna be great all right. What else do we have There were a bunch of signings this week with spring training coming up there were teams or i guess. Players free agents were getting in under the just inside the deadline their spring training on time we had justin. Turner finally signed re-signed with the dodgers. Bring talked a few weeks ago about how we had seen and heard nothing about what turner was gonna do. We didn't know who's gonna resign at the dodgers. The dodgers are kind of you know. We've got our contingency plan. Just in case he doesn't return but then you didn't see or hear about any interest from any other teams so i'm not super surprised that he went back to the dodgers I mean i guess we should kind of expected it. Because like i said there there didn't seem to be much interest from other teams but but good for him to year thirty four million dollar deal with the with the dodgers I believe we talked about how he's like three years old so this could be his last big deal. I think his next contract could be either a minor league deal or a or something in the neighborhood of a veteran's minimum. I'm not entirely sure but But yeah so. This is probably his last big deal. Especially with the dodgers guy. Paxton the big maple re-signed with the mariners After a short stint more than a cup of coffee with with the yankees he spent about a year and a half with the yankees and He resigned with the mariners one year. Eight and a half million dollars. I'm i'm excited. I'm happy about that. I like to paxton. He's not the ace. I don't feel like he's the ace that he was when he was in seattle before. But if he's a tour three man. I am absolutely okay with that. He's gonna be a great great piece of that pitching staff and a great mentor to that young pitching staff. The young pitchers. I talked about a lot. coming up with the mariners and i think i think he's going to be a good guy to teach those guys how to work like a big leaguer and a big leaguer so i'm excited about that that deal that's going to be good for seattle. We've got a lot a lot of guys coming through on minor. League deals who got matt harvey with the orioles. Jay bruce with the yankee cj krone with the rockies jason kipness with the braves billy hamilton with the indians and joe panic with the blue jays. These are just some of the notables that.

"And now baseball together. Welcome to this week's episode of the baseball together. Podcasts baseball family. Like i said. I'm brad i'm flying solo this week. We've got no brig. He's out so let's make a short and sweet. Let's get to it pitchers and catchers report to spring training. If you're listening to this tuesday they start reporting tomorrow. Wednesday fan brecon tastic. I cannot wait. I mean it feels like the season just ended. We had that whirlwind of sixty game season last year and now we're getting into spring training already. I mean the was the normal amount of time but it felt like it went pretty quick because the like i said the whirlwind season I dunno though at the same time. Jonesen it doesn't take much to jones for baseball though. So i'm really excited about it Different teams reported different times. Like i said everybody's starting on there are teams starting on wednesday the seventeenth There are other teams that will have their players report through the week until friday. Maybe even saturday and then we have the very first. The first spring training games of the spring saturday sunday. I apologize sunday. February twenty eight. I am ecstatic. I cannot wait. And here's the thing. this is. What super cool. So and i have been talking about how. It's hard to get tickets. Nobody's really knowing what was going on. Well depending on your team and their venue they're going fifteen to twenty to twenty five percent capacity looks like Tickets go on sale february nineteenth or the twentieth depending on on your venue. i've seen. I've seen bolted as kind of going through looking doing research. Looks like me personally for mariners. I'm gonna be buying tickets on february twentieth. I'm going to get a couple of tickets. And i'm i can do to get in and and go to at least one game. I am excited. I cannot wait just to go to a baseball game. I mean for me. It's only been a year for many of you. It's been at least two years because he probably didn't get to go to a spring training last year and then there was no chance to go. So i mean if you're lucky enough to go to the world series that's great that's excellent but for for most people it's been at least man it's been at least a year and a half since you've gotten to go to a game so if a chance go down to spring.

"How time was it is like it's written it was written in nineteen, Sixty, eight, I think but he's talking about coaches and their hypocrisy were he was trying to convert into knuckleballer because his arm was essentially probably blew his elbow out was what probably happened so He's fighting with his vision go there like you can't just rely on the knuckleball. So when he's throwing great and he's throwing throwing like amazing knuckle balls one day they're like keep throwing a key thrown. But then when he gets hit like you can't keep throwing the knuckleball they know it's come and do the same thing with the other guys like. When that curve balls good. Just throw it again, just keep throwing it make them hit it. But then as soon as they too many curve balls and they one out there like you can't keep throwing the curveball they just know that it's common it's like. It's so funny I. We highlights the same stuff that continues to happen now it's like. You throw to sliders you double up on sliders you throw A. Punch out. L.. Great. You know if they can't hit a keep Ronit. Trip up on sliders some other time they hit the gap like, what are you doing triple it up on sliders unit like The hypocrisy on pitched gongs. Will never go away. It's. It's incredible. pitchers have an easy Blame the catcher. Excel in ways except shakes. Except when we get released because it's us not you know catchers have been released for. Our our misdeeds catchers era needs to be thing like you should get released based on your era I'm really agree. Completely Agree Biggest I mean it's literally. Nine Times more important than the catchers batting average. Are, using that because there's nine innings game. No, I'm using nine errors. I. Okay. Bald. Every pitch of defense. Catchers batting are catchers batting average not era. Will separate on we'll. We'll create a secret separate stat for people call the false said he Owned website. Yeah. catcher savant the said he quotients that'll be. So Mike. We're going to wrap up here. How can people find you on the web and what do you do for cutters? Do you offer any services? "Seem to be wrong is that they are sometimes taught to bring everything here where in reality it seems catchers they're catching it through the middle, and then the arm is leaving the glove, which is direct kind of. Its misconstrue so I believe it's it's a mix of both you like I said. Every single. Good. Catch and release guy whether it'd be a middle infielder or a catcher whatever. Brings their glove to their hand. Go their hand is is almost moving independently up to the slot. That they're drawing from in their glove meets handed spot. At the same time that does happen in front of your chest, it always happened in front of your chest blood while you're moving setting up. To your target, you're not facing your target. Thanks, Nestle. Yeah. Oh, inherently as you're turning this goes back, your transfer goes back. would still happing fryer chest. So that's when you see I see a lot of catching instructor. Teaching transfers out here. which doesn't make much sense to me because you're GonNa have to bring your hand back anyway. At you. So yes I. Your transfer happened in front of your chest, but it's it's happening on the side of your. Body per se because you're turning Okay. Make Sense Of the happy medium between two. Okay. Okay. When do you think kids need to start catching? Is there a time that? They need to kind of get into early in their development to be eventually be good. Can they play a lot of different positions? Can they pick the later or do they need like the catcher track from young? Age. I believe every it doesn't matter what position you want to play I. Believe the first few years of a kid playing baseball they should at least catch a few games Is. Literally the only position that you're looking the opposite way. You get that other that you see the game in a different perspective As for a kid that wants to be a catcher or see some at sees a kid being catcher. Yes I. Believe they should be catching as much as possible as early as possible Now, that doesn't mean you run them into the ground before they get to high school. But for. Them to start. Taking ownership of the position. That can't be taught. In order to make it. In such a demanding position and important position. You need. You need to want to be there and I think that can only be developed if you've done it for a long time because it's tough to just. Go in there and catch the game if you haven't done it. was. A lot of nuance to being a catcher I would say, all I mean other than. Other than being pitcher because you just can't do that necessarily every day. I would say the earlier you can put them in a position that maybe the project at. Long term, the better catching is. Catching is the one and it's always been the one where it's like obviously, defense is so much more valued at that position. Than other positions that shortstop feels like defenses, those physicians are light hitting positions in the past because they're demanding defensive positions more demanding than most but it still would be beneficial to all. Like you know your son, your son's a lefty he's going to be you know the dad's six five he's going to be a first baseman is not that fast like it would benefit him a ton to play first base like actually learn the position. gave. You get accustomed to the nuance of the position ends. Usually what you see at the youth level, the the best players have been playing as positions all the time like they haven't understanding and it's hard to expect a young kid to be good at catching in an okay. Let's throw him in the outfield. Let's let him make sure he's good at like reading a fly ball. V Misjudge. A fly ball. You Get mad at him. It's like the kids spend a third of his time out there as opposed the kid other kids who spend all their time out there. And it's a honestly like outfield is looked at as as like a you know you put the worst kids in the outfield which is not necessarily true But catching specifically I feel like it's a nuanced position, it's the equipment is. A all other things like you got. If you're going to be a Catcher, you should have your own equipment. You need a special glove that's the only position on the field where it's a little bit different even first base, you can use your regular club. And that goes into the point where Kinda. If if you do know the kids going to be a catcher where you that wants to be a catcher I, think it's extremely important for him to play every single other position to and understand how it's. Especially, pitching I think growing up a catcher needs to know how to pitch the needs to understand pitching mechanics and how it feels to be on that bump in order to be able to manage their pitching staff to his full potential when he gets older. I don't understand why all these professional catches I may just aren't sharp. You guys just aren't that Smart Mike. He should be lot smarter for learning all that stuff. You're always catching bitches after the after the pitch calling pitches after the pitchers after already called. Bob's big, hindsight guy. To hit that one out you should obviously thrown any pits come on mice, mice, call dummy. We'll have you mike you read Jim Belton Book Ball for that old classic. I have not. If you haven't you should. You should read it. It's. One of my favorite baseball, but he's always all the time about. One of the things he's funny..

"Like. A what. Like Oh, you've never heard of this. Perfect. Guy Even know what to do now. So I was super nervous and kind of like. Blocking practice got a lot more simplistic and we use tennis balls and stuff after that. But it's just odd that no one that wouldn't occurred any of them to want to protect themselves I don't know. The oil in that the older. Lots of kids I don't know but isn't if you're an adult like. Isn't that always like in the back of your mind like protects my vital parts. Now. If something new potentially at me there it's released crossed my mind. Is should be. If, you get into the into like a fight on the streets like always in the back of my mind like what if this guy just touches me in the nuts so let's shift a throwing. So as we kind of like get towards the we've had a good good conversation. They were at the ninety minute mark. Let's all about throwing Mike, what a guys what do people need to know about throwing there's been a lot of debate on twitter people rolling their eyes about you know these crazy pop time that showcases Yada Yada Yada we had. Dan. Savvy from PBR on the show about a month or two ago, and he was talking about like look we can prevent everyone from cheating their face off in in these showcases what kids need to learn whether you need to do to be. Better at throwing and then. Do you roll your eyes at pop? Times. In regards to the showcase cop times. I don't roll my eyes at the numbers I roll my eyes at the kids. Whenever I was GONNA showcase. I would never. Set up a spot that wasn't game like. I've actually heard some showcase skies that run showcases. Purposely, putting them up point one because they cheated. So it's not it's not even real time. I don't know that's yourselves every shady shady to I mean if you don't right like don't add just. I think everybody understands I don't mean to cut up I. Think everybody understands like, okay. They're all cheating the showcase. So it's at least a measure of who was faster at cheating liking like those guys at there's there's pro days scout days with colleges where they put the sixty yard dash of fifty nine yards. To, boost few guys like it's still all relative like if if it's if it's sixty yard dashes, sixty five yards, the guy that ran the fastest still the fastest guy, his time might not be correct. But continues. I'm sorry Will. Put it this way I think I think you could avoid both the catchers just set up in the right spot and. Sued the PBR's point. That's all takes. A piece of tape. But. In regards to achieving that better pop time what kids really need to learn few like. Overall ideas One. is to not gang ground with your first step. Gas The biggest thing. It's creating effective momentum of the push of your back foot and not a walk through with your let. You Compare I compare a throw from the catcher to two things one it's a relay throw from shortstop to home into a double play. Turned from second Baseman You have to be able to adjust. To wherever the ball is and be able to move around it as efficiently as he can in that goes into. Working around your center of gravity and kind of attaching it to the ball in order for not to gain ground with that for step. And It, it needs to feel connected. The more allow. The. Momentum of the baseball coming into to help with your transfer. The more. You bring your glove to your hand instead of your hand, your glove that's going to help. And if you feel connected that basically put. A throw in for parts connected to. foreparts is first step second step transferring grow. Your transfer. The bulk getting into your hand and up into a short slatkin. Lincoln throwing a football should happen should finish at the same time your first steps getting. Those to happen the backsides connected. US A pitcher null. You have to wait until your front heel hits in order for your backside to go and as soon as that front he'll sir, your frontside starts going you start throwing So then that ties into the other two parts, the second step in the throw so those should feel connected to but if you get the first two connected as in the transfer. In your first step. That is in my opinion almost more important than connecting the next to. Because, if you have those two you're in pretty good positions start. And I think the the big thing said there is like don't try and gain ground on your first step, and if you guys have seen that video that little kid who like runs out in front of the hitter catches in the guy swings just smokes them in the back. Made Betas rounds recently it's not funny that got hit, but it's funny like it's wrong. He's not hurt. Isn't that the the first? A. Catch a ball in their first instinct is like a little bit closer second base instead of get themselves in a strong position to throw because what is what does it have? Steph Culture GonNa get you. Literally not putting. Gene. Inches. Yourself in the same exact wrong position. It just takes a lot longer to get there. Yeah. Interest Oh. Yes. So that's kind of overall a nutshell how a wide how I try to train my catchers. Arm Action stuff like that. Is that something you really need to work on as it? I mean I think one of the common things..

"And it hurts them so much because they see they get ahead. Great. Then they bop right to the black and then guess what happens at least half of their Mrs or off the plate, and so now they're back to one and they're back over the middle the plate right instead of all right middle. Now we're GonNa go maybe outer half maybe out Thurdsay still have a much. You know now we have like a two thirds chance of getting to Oh to instead of a forty percent chance or whatever, and that's like one of the big disconnects where we're trying to we try to help my catcher say look. Especially oh pivotal count or one one we need you to have more of the white your body on more the white because we'd rather you than put the ball in play. And evaporate over we have a better gang ot one two, and then we can do all that other stuff that Kinda makes sense. I completely agree the the more ahead of the count. In general the more off the plate setting up. Whatever the pitch is more up to target I guess, Yeah I. Guess. Correct I guess it doesn't happen one hundred percent of the time I. Guess That's what I'm saying. But to bobbies point. All catcher still do give targets. You just don't see it big it early they they give their sign they get in their stance they show it and then they rest. Some. It's a IT'S A. It's an invisible targets. You're saying the targets theory just gotTa remember. I prefer catchers used the old catchers gloves with the orange outline on the glove. So I know where the Hell I'm supposed to throw those amazing. Can we get a big league catcher to get one of those custom mainly obviously with Promo for leather, but just like just to throw it back for US I did they go out of style though that is that's a great invention. Whoever did that? Back, the factory that made that orange patent leather probably caught fire and burned down or the same. The same factor that was making the old catching loves that said, Lance Parrish on them all the time Lance Parrish was the most famous catcher I ever heard of because his name was on a regular. I don't even know I honestly don't even know if he played in the big leagues. Emma if at all. Known as let's talk about this setup. So you're right. Mike that hitters essentially we like see when we see you set up there for that brief second it's like we take a snapshot and then it's like in the bank that's going mentally we've already visually like we know what's happening and then it doesn't matter after that we started delivery and we're good. So what would you advise young people to do like what are they need to know about prepaid setup where their hands ago all that stuff essentially, you're giving your target until the pitcher starts delivering that's exactly what you just described like. Once Start Your delivery you're gone. So what I teach catchers is. To. Keep the target target up or flash it even if you WANNA stay relaxed until that front foot gets picked up by the pitcher and then what essentially happens it is you load your glove dislike like you with low. Getting yourself in. The. Best position possible in order to control the ball as it's coming. And one relaxed position is by far. The most important thing into is to be low working underneath the ball. So that's that's what's happening when you see those love strapped to the ground. Bob. I still like I don't give any credit to catchers who don't have the orange outland glove. Or GLOVICZKI. Service. Could we talk about catchers always had like the catchers have the shoulder pad or the next thing dangling down from their masks like catchers or just? Weird So, many gadgets we'll getting hit the throat is not not a pleasant experience. I need a big league catcher to come out and where like the to shoulder guards I see some guys some guys wear guards don't they like the ones one side or the other usually wear on your you're right mets it the left's nobody cares about but fugate hit right ear and you're right You don't WanNA throw the ball for why did why did the neck flap Gullit thing that get all that should never have existed because it teaches catchers to block the wrong way. Why it teaches you, it teaches at your neck is protected that you can do this. But it looks like and then you can put a logo on their. You put your catchers capital logo the Nikola thing. That whoever that big leaguer is needs to have no cup seabirds favors to. My Own Harry Antic- I'm sorry Damas. Thank you winning sorry I. Appreciate. One more opinion that I hate about catchers I hate the hockey mask cuts. I prefer the two piece just because it makes you look more bad ass which was why Mike where the hockey mask is whole life. I didn't the only thing I was excited going into college for his wearing a two piece. The two piece definitely looks back. I firmly believe that it. Helps you on fall tips that you in the mask too because it just explodes and start rattling around. Interesting idea wonder if I wonder if there's any A lot of research behind those cocky masks but I wonder if any of it's like out there where Just internal like. Engineering kind of stuff you know living. That that, actually is a really interesting point because. It breaks. So it's vows ahead bobby with the chair just all disperses and the chair breaks. He's probably be less injured than if I hit him with a chair that doesn't break. Like a WW chair verse a lot that makes that's interesting. It's an interesting idea. I. Put It on, take a foul tip and you'll feel it. Let's try it later Michael throw a ball straight your face. We'll get the stream going right before my softball games..

"According to the umpire. Then, do they distrust you and then they wanna like screw you over If you see a bore if you get a shot down the line, hit off you. And you saw go foul but his that guy said fair. What are you GONNA do? Are you saw fair reset foul. What are you going to say? He's fair. Go ahead. Keep running. I feel like I'm. I feel like the I ended the C. The COP, the cabinet on hires really good. Yeah. That way. But confident Umpires don't. If you're confident. You're not necessarily looking at the glove or just watching the ball. If you're if you're probably questioning yourself. then. It can go one or two ways you can either feel like this like. I'm sure. You. Know I've never caught in a game. Past fifteen years old I got I got to assume that piracy doesn't like you taking the ball from six inches outside moving back to the middle of the plate is going to say, Hey, stop moving the ball I'm not giving that to you don't like if you're blatantly trying to make him look stupid because that's what really would do right is if you if you take a ball, it hits the dirt I've kids do this like basically scoops it. Takes a right back up to the Middle Zone like if you're going to try and make that guy look stupid he's probably GonNa take offense to that exact if you're just doing it on borderline pitches, which is what almost every pitch in the big leagues his because they're so good at locating. If you're taking pitches at our. An inch off the black and moving them to the middle. And you're doing it every time you're consistent with it. You're probably get a few more strike calls. You might not. You might late in the game you might not. He might say I'm not like not looking stupid like you're not gonNA you're. Not. GonNa. Get everybody all over me when you're lately movement the Glove Yup I think it's I think he's probably the conversation over the Catcher, which is like part of catching right like the relationship. With the. Edge it's in a now with coder and everything is pretty much being taken away from youth at least with the guys on pitcher but but yeah, I mean. Like exactly what you? If you do it consistently on the borderline pitches, not even just on the border, which is pretty much everything just to. Especially, if you'RE GONNA be moving at that much needs to be. Consistent. Like Over deception I I don't even know what you WANNA call it. But. I'm not necessarily component. To that being finished product I believe that really really helps you be able to beat the ball spot doesn't matter what position you are you should be. You should be able to on the opposite side of where the ball's going and be able to catch it going back on that same path. By far that's the most important thing you have to do when you catch or when he received And be able to quote unquote frame well or digits. Control the ball and that really really forces issue but you don't need all that movement in order to create that Angolan or had success doing that. And that kind of goes into how what I teach in. There's people call a bunch of different things. It's the. I call the hybrid or turn or somebody will call it the risks role It's basically it's it's using all of that movement before you catch the ball and then stopping at once you catch the ball and basically moving the ball with only your glove rather than you are. That's kind of like the ground, all or A. Yati is fine or. Even. So Dan you guys like pitchers. pitchers are weird. We know this like guys guys have guidance. You need them. You need them there. Yeah. They're a necessary evil but. pitchers always have a preference right like. There's always one starter that has the backup as his personal like David. Ross was always John Lesser Personal, catcher daily Why would you like? What are those I guess? Staples of the guys that you like throwing to and that separated on I guess from bad receiver or did you did you ever feel like somebody was bad receiver When you were planned. There is a point where I didn't I didn't know what a good or bad receiver was. And then I figured that out I, think my second year pro bowl where I got this older guy was from Mike Panama and he was just like sticking balls down and like allstone fastballs down in the lefties. At like ninety three and you just like making them strikes I like very sure. They're like I knew they were going to be balls essentially and the my oh, that's right now. And then I realized that there were better catchers than I had been throwing my whole life. and. After that, you start to know the difference but then once they all become good relatively good and they're still always differences even at the end in the Atlantic League. but the Atlantic League, there were a lot more consistently better and then at that point, you just want the catcher that understands you. So my last season with long island there to catchers. Both had cannons forearms. One understood me and just how I pissed, which was the aggressive early go in go up bounce breaking balls don't ever really go away. Don't really go down his own. So, we could work together pretty easy. The other guy. Had like, no I never paid attention and we also don't work together that much. So. He was always like fastball loan away fastball I'm like no that's bad. That's bad for me like he decide call the exact opposite game. So that at that point, it's not like really his fault we talked about it but. He still just didn't get. Kind of going back to his default rather than. I think really taking time to think about what I was good at. So that point you just want someone was on the same page with you who understands because otherwise you start a second guess yourself you're like Whoa may maybe he's got a reason to go away like maybe he knows something I don't, and that's that's dangerous thinking for a pitcher because even though catchers there many catches, they call a great game it's still you're the you're the final say and then You. Call your game..

"On the mound and everyone would ask me to pitch and I wouldn't want a bitch. But I would try to hit tanks I wouldn't try to run anything out. I would just try to hit tanks. And then if I didn't, it's would just jogged at first, but catching would be like a fun interesting challenge that never done. It's like getting to experience. You. Know like a new exhibit in the museum essentially right like a whole. Perspective in the game that I had never done. Get hit in the nuts. See what that's like. During the middle of a game which I think it's important, have perspective on that. Good grief, the some how fast catchers can recover from that is because they have to. I know. Hit I. Don't I don't either, but it just happens, and then it's over I. Think it's just like your like your friends are out. There pelted with something and you're like so scared like just do it. But if it happens out of blue, just like Hertz started happening, so at least there's not like the. But if you knew what catchers new say John Today a deal with the Devil Age, John, on the sixty seven fish a game. Could he hit the nuts? You'd be like you'd be distraught the whole game don't know this is the one this is the one you'd be. It'd be terrible. You being the third any like. No, it's next inning. It's coming up. No, no, did you ever random? It's better better. You know the Uber play with a catcher. WHO DID MIRKO? No I don't think so. So. I I I have. I've played with a catcher. Who didn't who'd never wore a cup? Like it was. The most mind blowing. The I've never been like jaw dropped on the baseball field. He never workup so this kid. He was at the Orioles play wooden. He? He's also an odd character just in general, but he went to the University of South Carolina like he went to a big time program. Big Time Baseball. He wouldn't wear sliding shorts. He wear them, so you wear baseball pants. Nothing under is baseball, pants and nothing under Jersey. We here. It didn't matter Cole out like it didn't matter what was going on. He was just wearing a Jersey top and baseball pants, and maybe he was wearing low cut socks. And no, no no sliding shorts and he's blocking balls like he was good. He was legitimately good at blocking. And I just for the life of ME I. Don't understand it like. Why would you ever do that? Well I didn't wear a cup as a pitcher in the last at least decade on my career, but I felt like when I really thought about it because I was always. I mean I'm not I wasn't flippant about my. Man Health but. When you just think of the possible ways, your contorted on releasing a pitch. It doesn't seem like there's really away like the way I would finish my bitch, and like the way my body would be. It doesn't seem like I could actually get hit. There I'm sure there's a way somehow, but there's a way you know I. Don't know. Yeah, there's always a way, but like mice can always get into your house, but. Yeah that was my justification and I snuck out of the game without getting hit so. I see but but. You're not catchers like you're fully all that so dangerous and infielders to I mean. House infielders. Don't work ups is beyond me. Never workup. Okay well, let's seems in character I. Guess, and Never I've only seen I've been hit once two miles. A sophomore may school. But I did out a cup on at that point. Just never in Prob- I never. Felt like I wanted to where one or Probably bad advice for kids listening. It's bad boy, yeah! Yeah well, that's that's a weird thing. So when I was in Turkey last year Baid. That's the thing they don't know exists. There's a lot of stuff that that. If you've grown up with a baseball culture, there are things you don't know. So we were doing catching drills before it even dawned on me like I was teaching them how to block. I teach all this all the baseball skills. I remember. It was like two weeks in. I was. Teasing Caters Outta Block, and then at dawn on me, I'm like. Do you of cups on and gave me his blank. Look like you don't know what cups are baths rights. You've no idea not because of their own. I mean they just against a cultural thing. It's like Oh. Is that important? Oh Yeah I guess that makes sense. So, I'm like all right. We're going to change these blocking drills because I was just gonNa like bounce balls Adam and teach them how to like. Get you know. Get just over and stuff like that basics which are huge. Especially for country developing their baseball stuff I mean if you've catchers that could just. Just drop down and do a decent job blocking and cover up that six. Whole I mean makes a huge difference compared to other. Places where they just don't. Like if you were if you you know with all the Turkish baseball teams, maybe there's like eight or ten mm around the club teams. If you're the one coats at Teaser, kids at a really block well, considering how few strikes those pitchers throw. It makes a huge difference because they're essentially like the twelve twelve. You level for like sixteen seventeen year old kids. That's like where their skill level is so everyone knows who's listening that US. Don't throw that many strikes when you're that young. Right ball's going everywhere, so you're catchers have to be really good. Otherwise it becomes a super-duper mess. So, if you're the team that actually blocked balls well and actually receive really well. That'd be a massive advantage compared to other teams in that. Stage of your country would. Anyway Ya'll's throwing them balls and I was like halfway through. This is I'm a bad person. I'M GONNA its own in the nuts. This is terrible, and in Turkey I. Don't know healthcare is like I. Don't know how that sets them back. If someone gets to go the hospital, but they had never occurred to them. And so they'd been doing all their games all their practice without cops as catcher. And Mike ooh, it's a terrible idea. You're going to be in the hospital and be setback lots of. Lots of money and pain, so yeah, it's a weird thing to have to think about when you're coaching is. Is this going to set them back financially? Because of their because of an injury to the grind, well, I mean an Turkey is like they have cell phones like. The economics of Turkey I guess I can't. I won't say economics, but people didn't have a lot of money, but they also weren't like dirt poor most of them like they wasn't like that like they had. They were clothed. They were fed. they had some of the creature comforts that we have but like no one had like a new iphone. No one had you know. Most people couldn't afford cars like a laptop because. They're still price in American dollars but I think a Turkish lear was like one thirteenth of American. You get paid thirteen hundred thirteen hundred lire per month. And that's worth a hundred American dollars right so you're not going to buy a MAC laptop for a thousand dollars. That's like five one salary. Potential, so that was like the big gap, and so just speaking out. I didn't know what their healthcare system was likely how the costs go, and and you know you start thinking about any. There's I follow guy on Lincoln. And he runs a baseball academy in Cameroon, he's like eighteen, but it's actually watching stuff that he posts super passionate about teaching based on his young himself..

"It's just the yet nine kids that are committed that show up and the catcher at some points probably GonNa be a kid. Wrist pitch is probably the only catch on the team. Yeah and that that is just one of the overarching things to avoid as as having a rouser sizes too small like you just have to. If I mean if all possible I not like you said. Sometimes you just get stuck like my last year with my academy teams, we are down to eleven. Guys, and that's not nine. Nine is bad like you have to have more than that, but. We got down to eleven nothing one day we only had ten. Is someone else was sick or hurt or something? That can be really challenging at that point because you just. I Dunno there. There's some guys that just like literally got will walk. Five guys can't pitch. And then you just have to like get three games. It sucks, but. Yeah, it's A. It's a really challenging thing to try to give catchers the rest they need while you're still getting through the weekend. Because you're right the best scenario, the actual catchers like I'm just a catcher pitch. That's the best. Then you get as a ride, those guys as their normal position right like they can catch. One out of every two games in a doubleheader occasionally maybe catch a little bit of the second game. If they're feeling, okay is on a million degrees right if they can handle it. Basically, they're catching two-thirds year games in the weekend, and then your backup catchers catching the second game doubleheader second game in that double header. And, then you're in pretty good shape. And that's why I think the best way to do it, and it's hard to do the pitching and catching thing right with out that like with my last team. We had that we had a fulltime catcher. He was outstanding and we had two kids. You like to catch very competent. They're very. They're good. But they also played other positions to and there are. A little more well now they were more well rounded. It is exclusively catchers, so they would each one game. The weekend and are starting guy would catch three to four. And all made sense and our catchers are only catching the guys pitch. Would one game a weekend each? Which is certainly reasonable? It's not them playing shortstop probably. Throwing more than shortstop, but it's not. It's not breaking the Bank essentially. And then you can start. Say Okay if you're going to catch one game for us this week, and then maybe half the common and catch like be a backup, another game or something. All right well, then we can figure out your pitching like you're GonNa Pitch Thursday and then you'll catch. Saturday and that's reasonable, right? But, if it's your fulltime guy and he's got to start a game, too, and get three or four games like that's a nightmare for his arm like he's GonNa have problems in his in his career down the road for sure. And Yeah you. Fortunately Yeah it's. The hard part about doing doing teams in general is just having. Like dance like you, said you having eleven, guys tough, but at the same time having eleven guys is still having two kids who are on the bench all the time all. They're always sitting next to you regardless of their. Whether or not you're seven Mindanao and you really don't do this subbing in out a every inning like you do in in youth baseball and you really need at least thirteen guys in high school team just to just have enough capable arms to get through a weekend, and if you have thirteen guys is not enough at Bats I. There's just not enough at bats the weekend and keep everybody happy. And we're getting towards like tryout time. I send out a questionnaire that just yesterday asking parents. You know what? About next year you plan on returning next year. It wasn't. It's not A. Get, mad thing if parents are like no, we're going to try go somewhere else. Because there's there's just no way you're going to have seventy five percent of your team. That's going to be happy every year and twenty five percent. That's just not going to be happy based purely on playing time. Twelve kids, nine of them play. All the time and freedom always have to rotate the bench, so it's. You know it's it's a hard balance to. To have like eleven key. Everybody wants eleven kids on TV play all the time, but you're not gonNA have enough arms. You're probably even have kid missing every time and then just a touch back on the catchers like if you've got to catchers and one of them is the starter. That backup kids a hundred percent. No doubt going to be going to be upset with his plan time. He's just going to be upset unless he's Pitcher as well. In which case you'll probably pitch, catch game, maybe D. H., what retrying fit him in there, but at that point still feels like you're trying to find him places to play instead of him having a set spot on the team. So it's hard I, don't know what to do. If you'RE A if you're a coaching to carry in your. Carry enough kids to win games, and not yet everybody hurt and also satisfy players and catchers or prime example. You really don't take out your starting catcher especially once. If you're playing in tournaments that have brag apply. I mean you're starting. Catcher is going every single game. He's your bus catcher and you have to have a good catcher back there. Yeah and it's weird. I will point. Do you think bobby that people? figure out that catchers aren't supposed to catch every game when you're doing the double header format. Because in pro bowl, it's known like obviously. The starting catcher catches six out of seven days and has Sunday off essentially, but there's all single game's catchers literally never catch both ends of.

"That was like I don't care like. Is this really a myth like? If you eat too much peppering your coffee, you might get those like. I didn't know where any of those myths they got rid of the core myths after like four seasons I felt like. And then it has got obscure I. Don't care about this says strange. Could show. I might go back and what was really was it really was a good show I listen Adam savage. Is Book early this maybe earlier in this year or else? If not is definitely, the fall is called. Like everything is a hammer or something like that, and he just talked about using different types of tools and different like a there's a chapter on glues and different fasteners, and it was like a makers, a handbook for people who are like makers make sense. Just making making random things this letter guideline. Well. There was a lot of like really practical stuff in there, but it was also just he just one of those people who just was always making stuff as a kid. You always wanted to like. I was Adam savage is still around, but he. was just talking about he. He got into that because he was a prop maker, so he would make cool stuff for anything in a robotics and doing all those things but. You would just talked about trying to duplicate move things from movie sets like there was this glove from hell boy. which I don't care, what the movie! Hell! Boy but I guess they had. This thing called the Mecca Glove, which was whether they like spawned. A New people out of or something I don't know, but never saw you. Remember seeing this thing on the move, and he's like I. WanNa make my own. And this was a one off thing. They made for the movie that was expensive. That was like every little thing is extremely intricate like this mechanized. Superhero kind of thing. And it was like a thousand little parts. All of them custom made, and he made his own. It's like I'm like multiple years like that's the kind of Dude Adam savage's and. Anyway. His whole book was around about that I just like. Making stuff and sounds incredibly place now. It was an interesting book. I liked it, but anyway that was just A. I I like mythbusters show, and they all seem like just like good humans on it in general, so it's really sad to hear about. Him, Yeah. All Right? So, what are we today? Can we talk about the Ford Bronco a minute that. Is Amazing I had of sixty seven Bronco and it was the best. That was the best. My Dad had a Bronco I. Don't know what year was, but it was like a brown on Brown. Brown colored Bronco. which was to me fantastic like? Ride in the back of it. Just, you know there's no no seatbelt. I don't think the Bronco Morad seat belts. airbags probably non existent just A. Par Course Yeah just a tank of? Of An absolute. Monster truck that it was. Someone I saw definitely brought me back excited to see that. Well I. Just it puts me back in my garage where. I I guess I've always. I don't know I could I can do certain things for really long periods of time, and that was one of them where I've been that garage Anita Karfa eight, our straight and not eating just. Like time just flew by yeah, but working on old cars like that. If you haven't before, the worst thing is just the rust I mean if you if you buy like a California if you ever by an old car by California A Non East Coast Guard where there's not all the road saw 'cause. That's why they come rust buckets, but I had an east coast rust bucket. And it wasn't too bad, but even then I mean forty years old. A lot of bolts are rusted, shut their essentially welded to each other. You can have a project that like once. I became pretty competent working on cars. That wasn't my first one that I worked on. You could do like I could change a clutch which is not a small task that's like detaching the engine from the transmission It's like a serious thing, but I could do that in like an hour and a half, or it's something that I was competent at. You got to know where all the bolts are. Do the things whatever? But then you have like all right. This is gonNA. Take me two hours. And, then you start disassembling stuff, and then you hear in your taken off, you've got seven of the eight bolts, and then you start to hear this one. That's a little getting a little bit slow, and then it gets a little slower than little creaky, and then it goes. And then it snaps, and then your whole frigging day is devoted to getting that one frigging Bolt Al and it's like either that just playing that in my head that fictional. I said so many rage like legit rage moments where that happened in like an inaccessible place like in the engine lean, you can snap off a a bolt in your engine block and you're like I literally pulled the engine out of this car now to drill out that bolt. At. That's the thing with old cars. That makes you WANNA. Keep doing that. It's just it can. Any job can become a nightmare, or there's times you just literally can't get a bolts often. You have to burn it off or cut it off. A burning it off his cutting off, but I mean like some of the leaf spring bolts. If you don't you don't leave, springs are. A, don't but. Most most cars. Most trucks maybe not most anymore, but they have this big. It's like a spring. It looks like a a big arc and it's like one. It's basically a pack of Flat Metal Strips. And when they're stacked together and they're pretty thick, they make essentially as so just a coil spring, one type of string, but a leaf spring as big, a longer and longer and longer, and they taper down, and then they stack on top of the Axel, so a lot of trucks have leaf springs in the back still to this day. But just like some of those like you could often replace them, and but bear suspension on old cars on gps like some GPS probably still have lease rings. Maybe not anymore I'm not sure. But. In some of those packs. I mean there's a lot of wears a lot of like roscoe's and. I remember I literally couldn't get a bolt off out of my lease rings to remove the Holy Spring Pack, and it was like a three hour deal. oxyacetylene torch. Heat heated up heat stuff up. It expands and then contracts, and so to break through from the whole that you're in did work than I had to straight literally like liquefy it and burnt out just like stuff like that as People should respect auto mechanics. It's not that they don't but Eddie Story. It can be very. Very frustrating thing especially on older cars anyway. So. Did you see these tweets about Japanese baseball? Only, I only pulled up one woman at a mask on, and it just said it literally just like Hashtag Japanese baseball. That's all..

"Forecast or every year that talks about the negative value attributed to lower end catchers, and I don't want a guy getting negative Allieu on my teams on willing to kind of take a shot on a guy a little bit earlier in a two catcher format then I necessarily would just because I don't. That guy giving me negative value. Great. I mean, it talks also talked about this for a while for me. He's always been one of the best guys around catchers when I've been in drafts with him. He he's not afraid to spend money a catcher and go out get in the catch elite to go and spend money on the to look I was looking at my whole leagues where he retargeting and found that it's in my A-league, I have Sarino set one dollar then by the place. Why are the other catch on the Nova turn their of it in my national it my all was Austin Barnes and Tucker Barnhart, and I have them for one and two dollars. Now in this in that, particularly you only to keep seven days, and even those prices I still have other guys that I wanna keep as so I'm gonna throw those guys back in. There's some upside in that. But I thinking that's not there's other guys was with limited keepers as not worth it. But if I didn't have keepers, I would probably keep both those guys and just move forward. Because I think Barnhart is doesn't kill you. There's a little bit of upside air in Austin Barnes depends, which I have him shows up at that price of willing to take that that, but that's one of those examples where league format they keep her situation dictates what I'm going to completely. Let's let's jump into tears and talk about the first year, which is only two players as Gary Sanchez in JT, real Muto. And if you look in the show notes over on your whatever podcast player using you can see put the ADP's. I was absolutely shocked that Gary Sanchez is still going ahead of JT muzo after last year.
