Thanksgiving is peak day for fires. We have more cooking fires on Thanksgiving and the days leading up to Thanksgiving than any other day of the year. Fire department major, Bobby Cooper. Cooking is the leading cause of structure fires. It's also the leading cause of fatalities in a structured fire. And you've got people who typically do cook, cooking a tremendous amount of food at one time, so you've got ovens and stoves and microwaves and crock pots going at the same time. You've also got amateur cooks, so people who don't cook so often. Major Cooper is urging people to keep a fire extinguisher nearby when cooking Thanksgiving dinner. If the oven catches fire, close it and turn it off, taking the air and heat away will help put out the fire. Retail traders have really taken a beating this year, but you know their losses may actually be what ultimately helps fuel a push higher by equity markets into the close of this year. Bloomberg's Courtney donahoe explains why. The average retail portfolio is down about 35% this year so many investors will soon turn their focus to tax loss harvesting. What this means is that investors will look for a place to put their money after selling their losers to reduce their taxable capital gains. Typically the move is too broad market exchange traded funds. The increased inflows may help underpin an end of the year rally. All right, thank you, Courtney. This is Bloomberg. This is masters in business with Barry riddles on Bloomberg radio. I'm Barry Ruth, you're listening to masters in business on Bloomberg radio, my extra special guest this week is Steve case. He is the chairman and CEO of revolution, a company we will talk quite a bit about. He is probably best known as the cofounder of America online, which at its peak was responsible for providing Internet access to about half of the United States. He is chairman of the case foundation, as well as chair of the Smithsonian. He is the author of several books, most recently, the rise of the rest, how entrepreneurs and surprising places are building the new American Dream, Steve case, welcome to Bloomberg. Great to be with you, Barry. I've interviewed a number of people from revolution. I've spoken to your wife about the case foundation, but let's talk about your background. Your entrepreneurial career really begins in 1985 when you cofound America online, which turned out to be the first Internet company to go public, tell us a little bit about the founding of AOL, where did this idea come from? And what was that experience like? Well, it was an interesting journey. I actually stumbled onto the idea of the Internet in 1979, 1980. I was a senior in college. I was hearing about this thing called video text and teletech interactive TV and the thing in many tale in France and Preston in the UK, all these interactive services I was really intrigued and I read a book by Alvin Toffler the futurist called the third wave, and he basically was talking about this coming electronic frontier electronic cottage. I was smitten, I was mesmerized. So I knew I wanted to do that, but when I graduated from college in 1980, there were no Internet companies going to work for her because it was more of an idea. And venture capital is back then, weren't backing 21 year olds coming out of college. So I decided to work for some big companies for all Procter & Gamble and then PepsiCo. And moved to the Washington D.C. area to join a startup that failed. But thankfully, two of the people I met there, Jim kimsey and Mark sheriff and I had cofounded America online in 1985. So it's still pretty early days in terms of the Internet, but really believe that someday the Internet would be pervasive that it would be a mainstream phenomenon. And we set out to try to get America online. So I was going to ask you why such a something so fundamental block and tackling is access, but really the answer is there was no access back then or other than mainframes at universities in the Department

good And Jack with us there on Bloomberg radio Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quicktake powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than a 120 countries In the newsroom I'm Denise Pellegrini This is Bloomberg Thank you so much for joining us for this holiday edition of Bloomberg daybreak I'm John Tucker Well the stock market is closed for the Memorial Day holiday and this hour we're going to look at what's ahead for the equity markets and the second half of the year with the Alicia Levine the head of equities and capital market advisory at BNY Mellon wealth management And as we enter peak driving season this summer how high will gas prices go Well as John killed off the founding partner at a game capital But first let's start with the May jobs report it is out on Friday and for more we're pleased to welcome Bloomberg senior U.S. economists Hey just let's start out how close are we or far away or are we from the employment figures pre-pandemic We are still below by about a million jobs And I think from now on we will see some slow down in the pace of job gains Just simply because the fed is tightening policy and some interest rate sensitive sectors of the economy such as housing construction will start letting people go And they already doing that So there have been some reports that mortgage companies are firing people and we may see that reflected in the national payroll reports It's very industry specific though Overall there's still a labor shortage right Absolutely Overall the economy is doing great I'm just saying that the pace of job gains may you know decelerate to something like 250 which is still very healthy So I think one of the key strengths of the U.S. economy is in the consumer sector And consumers are doing great So still we see people buying durable goods We still think that the are going to accelerate the spending in the services sector So this is going to drive the U.S. economy for the rest of the year And at a solid clip which will mean that jobs will continue to grow Is it safe to say you're against consensus at this point I am talking about this year but the risks are rising quite significantly going into the next year So as the fed continues to tighten policy we will see a significant slowdown in economic growth going into 2023 And the risk the risks of the recession may rise quite significantly going into the next year Okay what the fed is doing they're on the path raising interest rates to try and slow the economy to try and slow inflation That is one of their congressional mandates at this point So where does employment figure in that I imagine it's got to do with wages right Well at this point the focus is really on inflation because the fed is behind the curve on that front and they are going to continue raising rates this year The other mandate which is full employment they're pretty much there They say well we would like to reduce demand to a certain degree so that the number of job openings is not as high compared to the number of unemployed people So that's kind of the goal It's a very delicate balance there You know monetary policy is a very blunt tool So how much will they be able to fine tune it to the extent that we don't have significant increases in the unemployment rate As a result that's a big question I think there is still a chance the fed can succeed soft or softish lending as such a Powell likes to say I think if we continue to see only modest increases in participation rate and not.

Lolo on this week's with doorbells like these john. Thank you for your door with us. Thank you. I've won adorable and one and one pet. A cat is possible. That i could have two cats and only one adorable as you. Well know could you please give us the name of the animal adorable and describe. Our cat is named margallo would is not an anagram for mar-a-lago. She was named after the bird in stuart little We call her lolo. She is a part of maine. Coon cats but beyond. That don't know we know that that she has that main cat in her because she's got further between her paws and her primary quality is she's really not very smart and i've had a lot of cats in my time and they tend to be fairly clever but what is so adorable about low. The dumdum cat is. She is really dull. She stares into space vacantly. And i've seen times when she will go sit under a coffee table and then stand up and hit her head on the coffee table. No i've ever witnessed this little spatial awareness as lola. The dumdum cat is really. It's really fun to be around. How did your adorable come into your life. My wife was a whole human being in her own right. was getting her hair's cut and the person who cuts both of our hairs as fosters rescue cats and Holly showed showed. Catherine i was all persson euro. Write a picture of this cat. She was fostering and it was just known to catherine that we would be living with that cat for the rest of their lives. There was just an immediate iphone connection so he took. We took the cat in. What's the most you've gone out of your way to cater or spoil your adorable I was the only one who bought lolo a christmas present this year. I i am i. We celebrate christmas and a secular way and no one got her a present. And i didn't at first either and then i noticed that she seemed a little annoyed by it because she's not intelligent but she is spiteful she's a cap after all and she seemed annoyed that we're opening these presents so i went and i got this little Soft cat cup like a little soft cat bed. But it's very hype walden like a cup fleece cup. From a from a c- a cat store in in blue hill maine where we spent our time. And i brought it back in. My whole family laughed and laughed and laughed at me saying she doesn't want to christmas present and she's to two huge fit into that thing anyway. I said just wait and week pass. Nothing happened week pass. Nothing happened and one day. I came back and i don't know how she did it but she got herself into that thing and was so happy and both she and i had vengeance on our whole families. Is there anything better there. Any better way to honor christmas than that vengeance upon our whole family. What is lola's funniest or weirdest habit or behavior. We used to think that even though she's not smart that she his secret genius quality because when she saw bird outside she would make a very special noise which you probably know. Which is i think. And we thought that she was the only cat who did that. And since then. I've learned through instagram and other sources that it is it is actually a pretty common though mysterious behavior that when cat spot prey particularly birds they make they vocalized very distinct way. That is nothing like their regular now and we hear of course believe that. All animals are emotional support animal. Yeah and how has the low in particular helped support. Your emotions supported you. There's i mean we've all disgusted. You know we we we. There are four of us in our family. Catherine the human that i share my life with and then to rapidly aging adults that live in our house and demand things from us and.

Describe that now you've lived your whole life in a world where surgeries common. in fact. it's so common. We have robots deal with tiny little holes short. But if you were describe surgery the first go round then You know you'd be pretty disturbed by what it is. Well there's no because there's anesthesia. In there i mean they put you to sleep or they numb you while they not i didn't there were surgeries at one. Time had three hundred percent mortality rates. What's that mean. The the surgeon was well known for being very quick with surgery back. Then you wanted to get this over quickly right. yep so. While under undertaking an amputation he managed to cut off several of the his attendance fingers. I think two of them died. And the pe the patient himself also died so it's the only surgery in history with a three hundred percent mortality rate. The surgeon himself was the only one who survived. Yes barbers used to be called a barber dentist. Because dentistry to be honest dentistry hasn't changed at all in the last four to five hundred years. The only differences now the the tools are a little bit better and they use anesthetic but the general idea of it hasn't changed at all. You're still just getting. Your teeth yanked out with pliers or jodi into and filled or whatever just like they were doing four hundred years ago. The only differences. Now it's someone who's actually trained to do that using anaesthetic right so as far as this gene therapy goes the thing that i the only thing i'm disturbed about is that we aren't talking to people. About how unusual this we're using the term vaccine which suggests decades of testing sure whereas and again i don't think either one of us are anti vaccine. I'm not. I am not however i am anti line sure. I'm anti foam. That's why. I hate the word casualty right because there's nothing casual about. This is a bad person. This is this is someone who was murdered or who died. So in this case you know we should call this As the cdc calls it right here when they talk about it they call it new and it's nothing like that says our vaccines are a new type of vaccine to protect against certain infectious diseases. So there you go well one infectious disease. So how does it work covid. Nineteen vaccines give instructions for our cells to make a harmless piece. They bowled the harmless piece. Just visit bull type They wanna make sure you know that your cells are being programmed to do something that is totally and completely harmless now. I really genuinely don't believe that. Humans have developed enough knowledge and intelligence to attempt to play god in this way. And i i hate to use that phrase but we're trying to program cells in people's bodies to do a specific thing and produce a result that we want right. I don't believe we're capable of.
