"A tight gibbs alex's run six races in the xfinity series this year he has five top five finishes and two wins winning this past weekend at charlotte also run the daytona road. Course joe gibbs grandson and the kid i understand and people will say oh. Yeah he's just driving the best car. He's driving good equipment. There's no doubt about that. But he's winning and running top five in that really good equipment and that says something that self doesn't it i mean it. Does it says this kid can raise. He's only eighteen but not be able to be plugged in like that even in good equipment and still post is winning finishes i i think it silences some of that that talk of. Oh you know. He's coming in and just daddy's money type thing you know he. I think he's proved as proved himself in the series so far. What do you think dustin. Yeah i mean you know it's it's it's a remarkable start to his nascar career to wins in the first six races and he's done a lot of fantastic things he's he's made a lot of Big moves the certainly the move that it was off into the grass and daytona at the road course was was quite a move off a restart There's there's a lot of things that he's doing well he still needs experience. I mean that's why these arca races are still important to getting laps and he still needs to learn and be able to put himself in different situations. It's just like you know where he's talking about the indianapolis five hundred well You know that was a battle between Ellul castro neves who was in his twenty first indianapolis five hundred and Alex polo who was in a second. And you know that was even talked about after the race that it was. You know i think simon pageant saying that that alex polo showed his cards too early and castro nevis was sitting there and knew what to do and i think the whole comment was made was it. It was as one person was playing chess and the other person was playing checkers. And that's based off experience and tie gives done a lot of great things And he's had some good battles but he also needs that experience i think. What's interesting with with the gibbs folks is that you know they still are seem to be restrained in how they're doing it It's not like hayes only twelve to fourteen races. Hey let's get them in in another car and run the rest of the season Or let's try to get another car out there and now certainly some that's related to sponsorship. Because he's running race without sponsorship so You know. I like what he's doing and it's a good first step and what the what joe gibson and and coy and what they're doing and trying to be very cautious and take their time and not rush him up there. I think it's going to be in chintzy. What the next step is you know. Obviously they didn't they went straight without going to the truck series and that was unique approach to it You know you gotta figure it okay. So next year. he's he would should be fulltime xfinity. You anticipate and is a year and and a third year and a half enough to move up to cop or is it. stay a couple years Type thing and then go from there and also that factors into the cup driver. Situation is for toyota. When you get you know a couple three years down the road while the think maybe they learned their lesson. Alex with you know. Obviously you know we remember that. They push joy llegado into the into the cup series admittedly before he was ready and that kinda backfired on him he's thrived since he went to pinski Same type thing for daniel suarez pushed him into copy early because carl edwards stepped away. So i mean maybe now they're looking at ties saying we don't wanna push him too soon. We've seen what happens when you do. Yeah i mean. I think there is that kind of fine line of giving him enough experience but not putting him into so many reasons where he's not going to be successful and then it's going to backfire in that way you were talking about and dustin mentions like those moments still i mean. I think we even saw that on saturday. He spun pretty early in the race there and was still able to drive back to a winning finish. But how can you sort of forward then eliminate those wrecks that come early earned so yeah i mean i think it's fine line. Of how many are you going to enter them in. I think that i. I don't think it would hurt them to see him in more races. Now that he's kind of been able to prove that he can drive these cars and do what he's done but you know that's gotta be tempered with sponsorship and these other drivers that are raising them. I say he's a pretty heady kid. Dustin i'd a chance to interview on the start finish line after the race and you know he was still running the arca race on. Saturday turns the crowd and he goes. Don't go anywhere. We got another one coming up later on. I mean being the crime. Let the credit helping to be playing promoter. While he's doing the whole thing he's learning he's learning and then he goes out and kills the field in the race. And i'll tell you one of the things that's also interesting is as you look at. How long to put him in there. You think about you know. Austin cedric is the reigning expanding series champion. And he was back in the expanding series this year for for penske to as opposed to you know they could have you know maybe could put him in the wood brother's car instead of having benedetto Based off that success you look at You know certainly you know chase briscoe. Was there for a couple years and working his way up and certainly look at the challenges. That chase birth goes add. Now the rookies of had. This is not an easy time for a rookie. Because there's no testing there's no at right now there's no practice. Obviously next year they'll be practice More races and i wanted to support at every race in. That should be helpful. It's still not going to be as much. I don't think as what it was. I don't think you're gonna see too. Many three day shows with with practice only on friday and the qualifying saturday and practice in the race on sunday. They gonna be today shows and condensed schedule so I think laps are important. And for thai gibbs i think you know for an austin syndrich. I think he'd probably tell you maybe for as much as he liked to be up at cup that he also recognizes how important it is to get laps. And i think it's going to be interesting with these these xfinity drivers to once they move up Especially next the next gen car that composite body You can beat the wall down a little bit. And and there's the forgiveness as opposed to the steel body cup cars. And you know. I one thing. I'm going to be intrigued about. is you know. Look at how. What ty tyler. Ruddick has done was seven top tens last nine races. But that's a guy that likes running the wall. How much do things change for him. Next year with the composite body car and You know one of the guys that really can make a big impact because he had so much success in expanding car and had developed line..

More ferrall on the bench here on sports overnight. America all right so Around events with carver high. We're talking to rick caro's so you're the these are the twenty games in tokyo right that they were supposed to have and then where paris four parents twenty eight. La xactly okay so so let me ask you so. Let me ask you the the games. They obviously It would appear to me that nbc. They would rather have paris and los angeles than the nhl and that was their thinking. Like where are we going to spend our money in sports and they decided that they wanted to paris and la over the nhl. Like they had the indy five hundred. Which i love the indy. Five hundred you know. I do but i don't think anybody else cares about it. I really don't like do you know one person. Besides me watched the last ten laps of the indianapolis five hundred seriously. Yeah me and me. And i also watched the castro nevis spiderman thing. That was kind of fun because nobody else would do that. So you know you got a forty six year old guy doing it. The answer is though that the ratings. I'm sure were were abysmal. And a are reflective of the fact. That the indy five hundred doesn't foster. The superstars like it used do plus. There's no you know i know. There's the t the the series the indycar series. But he. It's it's it's people who are not american superstars. Let's put it that way and it's not like the old days when we could talk about. Aj floyd unser mears and those kind of guys that mattered on memorial day memorial day staple for me. I would never know what it meant. But i would listen to it on radio when i was growing up. We did have radios. When i was growing up was just beginning to come into a fashion radios and it was a big deal. Well i know and and dani sullivan and it went on and on threaten and penske went on and on and there it was great but now you know i do. I mean there. I don't think there's a soul on the face of the earth. That actually likes indycar racing. Like i like it. So he'll be misinterpreting. What i'm saying right now like i've always i've gone to the indy. Five hundred. i think it's cool. I like watching grand prix. I like watching indycar. I like watching cars. Two hundred and thirty miles an hour. Believe me i got a problem with nascar either. You and i've been to a ton of races. But i don't think the general public is a rat's ass about it and i'll be honest with you in and in all honesty like i love hockey even more than that. But i only care about that either well but it certainly not because of the lack of excitement. Switches the little bit but just we got home for that olympic qualifier. That i watch the end of the carolina tampa bay. Another two. one is better than the last two minutes of those two games. I mean it's just. It's it's unbelievable. Then he compare it to nba early round playoffs. Especially the blowout to the snooze. Irs these days and it's no comparison to me. I mean as far as excitement is concerned. Listen i don't disagree with you. I admire it as much as anybody. Like kara hi. I don't miss any hockey games. I'm just talking about like the general public the average layman. The you know the guy with a family. Whatever and it's memorial weekend and he's like what am i gonna do here in new york. It was pouring rain. I played basketball everybody else. I don't know. I don't know maybe they are. You're stuck inside. Maybe they are watching hockey. Maybe they are watching indycar. Just don't believe it now. I know that envy or you know. Nbc's out of the hockey business but they. The nhl is always bragging about their ratings. I mean they are at every single time. There's a story about ratings with the nhl you would have thought they took over the world. I mean they sixty five times higher than last year. they're always bragging about their. I mean they are the spin club they got going over there. Whoever spends those ratings into pr press releases is a genius because the way they describe it that they've got every living soul on the planet watching their games for the entire three hours. But you and. I both know that those are there lies. It's just not true it is not true l. Let's see what happens children hockey. Don't tell me they are because they're not no. It will avid avid fans. But then the question is what what is what is avid mean. How many are there like. We know here. In south florida You remember i. I did a kind of a study early..

George Washington Broadcast center Jack Armstrong, Joe Getty, Armstrong and Getty Show. Well, I think the Indianapolis star, the local paper here says the best it's time and it is time for the Indianapolis 500. Remember last year, there were no fans at the race last year. This year is gonna be 135,000 people hacking into the Motor Speedway here, and that's only as you said, 40% of capacity. There's gonna be the things you may expect these days master could be required inside. There is going to be an attempt at social distancing, but there's one thing that's gonna be very different than any other past running of the Indianapolis 500. That is the ability to get vaccinated While you're at the race. You could literally grab a burger. Grab a beer. Grab your one shot. Johnson and Johnson Copan 19 vaccine and sit down. Wow. Wow. What do you say there will be an attempted social distancing all 135,000 of you try to stay apart. Right, So that's where we are with vaccinations. Now you get a burger, a beer and a jab in the arm with the one dose J and J. Go about your business. Yeah, fantastic. Glad to see people with the India didn't watch it this year. I kind of forgot it was on. Honestly, I can't remember what's on Sunday and what's actually on Monday, but Congratulations to old. What's his face? One for the fourth time Castor and it was follows Indy Racing Helio Castro Nevis. Of fantastic. Well, said, Michael. Thank you. So, um I listen to a lot of podcasts while we were on vacation did ton of driving. Yeah. I was, um, hoping that because I've announced that my wife and I are getting a divorce, and I was hoping that this would be a good break for Salmon. Henry. Neither three of us from, you know, thinking about that What has been a miserable for the past month, and I think it was a really good break for them. But for me, I found that driving was just it was just nonstop. Turning, you know is too much time. The O think right. She got the whole Get the whole breakup situation. I haven't been heartbroken in decades. I kind of figured I had outgrown that sort of thing. I have not. And it's just zeh. Everybody's bad as I remember it. I know like you've coached some of your kids through the whole thing, but it's It's every bit as bad as I remembered. Every song on the radio is either about falling in love looking for love or for breaking up So every song he can't listen to any music. Wolf and everything I drive by the wonders we ate at a Wendy's once you know, it's just everything. Everything. I'll get You play like a Nader. Yeah, exactly. Oh, Lord, I'll get you a good playlist of rush songs, mostly about libertarianism and space, travel and principles and stuff like that, and then long, very long anyway, So I decided I needed to take in more podcasts to keep my mind off What's actually going on in my life to just try to focus on some stuff, and that helped a little bit Um, several podcasts, pointing out an issue that is growing and growing and growing. Then I came across this poll. That really makes it clear that crime is about to jump way up. In terms of political issue for voting, and it hasn't been AH voting issue for some time. And going back to the statistics. Peking or the downward slide starting in the early nineties. Joe and I are of the age where crime was a major issue, and we're gonna sit comes late night comic jokes. I mean, just everything revolved around crime because it was so prevalent through the seventies and eighties and honestly, pop music, too would mention how tough and dangerous New York is, for instance. And then it started trending down in the night in the nineties, and it just kept going lower and lower and lower and lower until that we got to the point that we just thought we'd solved crime. I guess if you're a stupid person, and so we don't need jails, we don't need cops. We don't need this. We don't need that. And now, of course, crime is going back up, and it's going up a lot in a lot of different places, whether it's violent crime or get in your car broken into or whatever. Here are the statistics that show you that crime is, by the way, it's zah good issue generally for Republicans. Law and order. Um, I'd rather not have the issue, then have the issue. But if the issue is going to exist, it usually is good for Republicans Ronald Reagan and many Republican presidents to it. A certain extent rode a wave of I'm gonna be tough on crime, and I'm gonna be tough on Communists. We did Joe Biden and Bill Clinton. Exactly Exactly because you had to. You couldn't get elected if you weren't We might be. We might be back to that the Chinese communists and crime being tough on crime and being tough on Communist. Listen to this. Three quarter The question was his crime in the country worse than it was a year ago one year ago. Three quarters of the country says yes, 75% of the country or 75%. Respondents said crime is worse in the country, then it was a year ago. How about your own local area? 54%. So even with your own local area, a majority of people say crime is worse than it was one year ago, let alone five years ago or 10 years ago. Yeah. Yeah, and that that is going to be huge. You want to talk about something that moves people to vote pipelines, tax cuts. There's all kinds of things that my school this or that I might move your crime. You get your car broken into. You're afraid to walk out of your restaurant to your parking.

We're gonna have Mark James with Indy Racing Network. They're gonna be taking the broadcast from us as we have the race live and then Marco Andretti and the cleaners, food banks talking a little bit about what happens on the track in the impact. And, of course, Helio Castro. Nevis is going to join us and Mario Andretti later So keep it here up until the race back home at the back home with the home base at the flagship station. We got Andy Maser. We've got Dave Swan guys. You know, it is an amazing place, and he has a sportsman. I'm guessing you've at least been here before and at least seen the place, right? I have seen the place, but I've never taken in in the race itself. But it is a spectacle, and I know that and I remember as a kid Taking my hot wheels on the day of the race and locking him up in the 33 cars and going from there. It is one of those things that one of those events that even if just like the Kentucky Derby, which we also had on WGN, where even if you're not a big fan of that particular sport, you can't miss it. It's the kind of thing that you pay attention to David in E. I know you've been all over the place. You're constantly traveling. Have you ever been to the facility Been to the race? I have. Good morning, Dane Been there twice and I was just telling Ryan in the production there, along with Bob Ferguson. That was 40 years ago. This Memorial Day weekend that I was there for the first time. And yeah, when they say the greatest spectacle in racing, it's a spectacle, all right. In many ways, the first time that I ever walked into the facility was late nineties and I had never in and been a sports fan. My my entire life and still been to plenty baseball game. Major league Baseball games, Bears games, Football games, Big's big sporting events, right? And there is nothing that can prepare you for really the magnitude of just the place and the facility and and what it is. And you mentioned 40 years ago. Now, now it is I mean, it is a beautiful place and Roger Penske's put a bunch of money into it. It was great. Even a couple of years ago. A few years ago, they've redone the facilities. The pagoda. Now there's jumbotrons. Everything everywhere. But Dave back when you went, it had sort of that notorious feel right field. You think I'm thinking of like biker gangs and crazy to box exactly what I saw. You get the nail on the head and well looks sees. And so we're on the air. I really shouldn't get into the details is to all of the things I saw in the infield. But, yes, it was that And in addition to that the second time I was there. It had rained very hard the night before, So the infield was a lot of mud. And so we put that together with the motorcycle gang. Just use your imagination there like it was still a lot of fun. And I have ah, very good, lifelong friend who is just absolutely passionate about the race. And another friend down there that I met when I was there the first time and it's really a wonderful experience is fantastic. We're gonna have, of course, little bit later on the program. Dave Swan listeners of this time slot love the far flung Forecasts and you're going to be adding that as well. And last thing, Andy, But, of course, and Dave, Thanks for confirming that, as advertised back in the day, it was one of those things with those amazing and you know, maybe not his family friendly experiences, but But, Andy, like I said, a spectacle, a zoo. We wrap things up as a sports going any Where would you rank this? I'm sort of that bucket list for sports fans. You know, it has to be toward the top. I mean, I think everybody wants to go to a Super Bowl. Everybody probably like to take in the world seriously game, But I mean, you talk about the Kentucky Derby, the spectacle of the horse racing and You know the fact that this is a one time event per year and it's such a great event that they asked me toward the top. I mean it Z. I've only have taken in live racing twice. And it was because of this radio station two We had coverage of the old target Grand Prix down at the Chicago Motor Speedway was there and it was a lot of fun. I mean, I had never been before, and you get a little bit of appreciation for Just how tough this sport actually is. And we appreciate having it on W G and back to the original radio voice. We're gonna be getting with Andy. And with Dave throughout the course of the program coming up right after the news we're gonna have, uh it is gonna be. It's gonna be Marco Andretti is gonna be with us. Those guys were getting ready with cleaners, food banks, So we're gonna have that. And Mark James Rennie Racing League after that, so keep it Here it is. Dane live from Indy sponsored by Victory Auto Records. That old car is worth money here on 7 20, WGN..

Thank you day for the opportunity to speak to this morning. This is a beautiful, beautiful day. Wonderful to have all the fans here today and thank you to everybody who's tuning in and listening and this is just something that you can't capture inwards. Think about. You know the magnitude of what it is, You know, the magic, the magnitude the history. Let's say the Indy 500 this race what it means but also racing in general. And I think, just as racing has become stronger, it has become more popular. The fan base is growing talk a little bit about what you do here. Why it's important that you're here doing what you do kind of shepherding in, you know, kind of whether it's more diversity, more opportunities. Talk about the position. Well, I think our governor said it best that we are issuing America back. We are going to be the largest sporting event since the pandemic started. And with that we while the pandemic was ongoing, and some of the things that took place during 2020, we started this race for equality and change. Focusing on bringing more diversity to the sport, focusing on enhancing and given opportunities to people who may not be represented in the sport and giving them the opportunity to love. What we all have come to love and come to enjoy. When you think about Roger Penske coming in, and we did a number of interviews with people with serious with the driver's legends of the sport, and as the speedway and the serious changed hands, people to a person agreed. That he was the perfect steward for a lot of different ways. This was a guy not that just didn't have. The resource is in order to run and handle this, But I kind of you know, Indy racing racing in general is in his DNA's talk a little bit about Penske Entertainment being a part of this and why everybody wins with things going forward here at the speedway. Well, we're certainly grateful for the home and family and all that they contributed Provided to this facility over the throughout the years. Many people may not know the story that went after the war. This place was dilapidated in the home and family came in and raised it to the problems that it is, but we certainly could not have found a better Stuart there. Roger Penske, the captain. He's our leader. And when you see what he's done to this place in terms of the investment over 16 $17 million Justin Facility investments alone. Everything from the bathroom's to the streets. This place is first class. Throughout and you know you just look at it. You could see his hands his touch his relentless pursuit of perfection from the golf course. Every aspect of this place he has made sure has been perfectly redesigned, built for the fans today, and I know there's no one more excited than him. When you take that and combine it with his passion for the fans and the people that we have. It gives you things like our diversity program in our race for equality and change, which he's just his dedicated to his attention to detail is justice deep and his passion for re crafting the sport in this concept in this idea, It's just monolithic. He wants to take that. Take that to the curb and make sure that everyone knows where everyone is Welcome at this facility you're looking and this is a guy who's won 18 Indy 500 success all around the world, but getting a chance to see him at the Penske breakfast a little bit earlier.
