"Gambling with Casto says he's the gambler extraordinaire right Maggie gray well we're looking for non sports things to gamble on so maybe Nick and that has some creative ideas for us well maybe well well if there's something better we do know this nickel find it a bit on the we do know that for him it is his lovely girlfriend anyway I did a rod is still going on those I wonder that is usually to place but that's on the Iditarod that's it the betting blind as well as our body mods will tell us do you want to talk about a little bit about Brady B. as we talked about his decision to go to Tampa but this effect is you heard with the update from job big go at the top of the hour we have a little bit of a discussion with Ross Tucker at the eleven o'clock hour about a baggy but the decision here all of Brady going to Tampa Bay it kind of the trickle down effect that you have players now willing and called the Buccaneers wanting to go to tap up and having that lebron M. J. type of fact down there with the Buccaneers morsel abroad they they else looking to hop on it be part of what could be a championship team with up to a bay Buccaneers yeah you know I'm not surprised by that I'm not a you know Ross was talking about the confidence of just playing with someone like Tom Brady that belief you always feel like you can come back and obviously underscored by the greatest comeback in Superbowl history and so you always feel like you have a chance with Tom Brady wears you kind of feel like you never have a chance with some quarterbacks out there you're just waiting for away for them to screw it up and so I I I understand it happening in Tampa Bay and I and and I think they're gonna get a lot of guys who are on we had a one year deals and it cheap deals and go ring chasing I'm just a little bit more so curious about what's going to go on in New England because I wonder if the same amount of guys are you know I think they always were calling New England P. we see people willing to take team friendly deals we see veterans they always want to grab on it that the end of their careers at the wait when we saw the real Reavis play that perfectly here where he goes up to New England wins the Super Bowl and then afterwards because it takes more money with the jets and so you see it happen a lot and so I think that's the more interesting part because I personally was a some sort of thinking about what the patriots are going to do next I think the patriots are going to draft a quarterback I think that the reason one of one of the reasons why they were maybe so willing to move on from Tom Brady and to not give up everything he wants it to not maybe extend that courtesy that a lot of franchises feel like they need to do for franchise QB's is because I think they have targeted someone in this draft like they targeted Jimmy Garoppolo's us several years ago I think they see that there is someone here who they can groom to be dear parent now I don't think that person's going to play next year but I do think that the patriots who have a lot of draft picks this year something that they have like ten draft I believe maybe more ten or twelve draft picks in the twenty twenty F. they've twelve selections this year so with that kind of capital I could see the patriots making you know taking a swing but then trying to sort of hide that guy baby for a year and and have this sort of bandaid quarterback not that they're going to you know take this season but having a sort of bridge quarterback to get them to the next day the next person because obviously that's incredibly difficult shoes for a young person to come in and fill if you have a season of distance in between maybe it makes the transition a little bit easier yeah you could see that I mean you could you could clearly see that from New England perspective and as we talked Albert Breer yesterday about it bell check extremely motivated try to rebuild it weighed without Tom Brady and number twelve at quarterback and I can see them addressing the quarterback position even though you've heard a number of people tell you that they do like Jarrett Stidham of what he presents potentially as a young signal caller for them and for that franchise the interesting thing to me is that is a bigger window up there in Foxboro the window was quite small in Tampa yeah look at maybe two years and it's the here and now for Bruce Arians and for the for Tom Brady and that's what makes it so compelling to me a story because you look at two individuals that we know are not gonna be long for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Bruce Arians is already had health issues you know why he took up the challenge of what to get back into coaching after taking a year off of the broadcast booth to leave in the Arizona Cardinals gets back into it last year his passing offense did work need a quarterback to be able throw less interceptions take care of the football little bit more it's that's arguably the greatest quarterback of all time in Tom Brady he's got an unbelievable amount of weapons and now the draw of the great player to beat I always find fascinating because you've seen it before in other leagues whether be my goal whether it be lebron guys looking to hop on late in their careers to try to get a part or be a part of the championship team it might maybe limited but can certainly still play and contribute I think you're gonna see that down there in Tampa Bay guys willing to take a lesser roles and lesser money in order to try to maybe be part of a championship team in the next year or two and I think that's going to be a fascinating storyline because I think people are gonna open up their eyes to the Buccaneers and look at them differently than I ever did before with number twelve having to ease good tickets physical today in New York City they're still working out the final details of that contract he's going to be a Tampa Bay buccaneer well he's gonna be playing for Bruce Arians and I think it's going to work down there in Tampa and I think as you mentioned yesterday Maggie I think it's a more intriguing storyline because with all the window was very very short for Brady down there in Tampa well without a doubt and yet the eighth year of you're a guy who's going to go ring chasing with Tom Brady you know you're gonna have to take less because think about it they have to pay Tom Brady's thirty billion dollars a year and a of course but they placed the franchise tag on Shaq Barrett that's a band aid you're gonna have to decide what you're gonna want to do with him and very expensive at the address your position they have obviously Mike Evans under big contract you're gonna have more guys that are going to need to get paid but you know think about it because it's it's it's not it's the immediate and it's almost like the immediate twenty twenty for two reasons number one you get the extra playoff game this year with both leagues getting an extra wild card team and think about it in what not next season but the next season do we think they're going to move to a seventeen game schedule that's not good for a forty four year old quarterback you know as if Tom Brady play sixteen games this year he will be the first quarterback to ever play that amount of games to a ghetto at his age so think about it that the window is so incredibly small so yes it's going to be the short term down in Tampa and that it's going to be a little bit with the longer term up in New England because they do have a little bit of time I think they doubt themselves inside it you know you you know it is Ross Tucker was right it is it's extremely tough for the person who follows the legend right it's part of the reason why Didi Gregorius was actually beloved in this town because he stepped into the the huge shoes of Derek Jeter and was able to do it seamlessly I think it's part of the reason why a lot of people are really high Daniel Jones because it was his first season you know taking over for you I was a perfect of course not did he clean up some of the turnovers towards the end of the year yes he did just completely implode on itself which is kind of like the bar isn't it we just want to see that the person can handle the pressure because the dead and Daniel Jones definitely showed you that which is something to build on it's not an easy situation I got a say in the radio business I had my small taste of it but I would say it is it is ultimately it's a opportunity that you would not want to turn down and so if I'm a rookie quarterback if I get drafted by the New England Patriots I'm not looking at it as I have to become Tom Brady all in one season I'm looking at it just as this is an incredible two ready at about half a block out a lot of haters and a lot of noise and a lot of raised expectations that might not be fair but so be it right R. in in Brady obviously made the decision to move on from the New England Patriots as well which helps out whoever decides to step paid to that role or urge that rolled in twenty twenty and beyond yeah it's it's difficult you always kind of the old joke was you want to be the guy that replaces the guy the replaces the guys and you don't want to be first mandate it's difficult shoes to fill regardless of which we do a lot of people to look at the patriots a lot differently now than he did over the last few days two decades with Brady at the helm as your quarterback because you go look at them with different expectations based on whether a the inexperience of the quarterback whether be stood up or whether it be a rookie they'll both be experienced or even if you should say bringing in a veteran signal caller exactly what that person is going to be and the expectations for that individual in a Petri uniforms so everything's really change the one thing that you do believe it is you know you're selling hope because in New England you've still got the master mind you still got Bella check up there that you know is a brilliant brilliant football minds I know he's played loop and loose with the rules but he's extremely motivated to try and win without Tom Brady and we do know down to tap up Brady's extremely tried every extremely motivated to try and win without bill Belichick can you do to all this Brady hears the naysayers Brady hears the people saying well to serve both to attract good you know was a god awful too broad braided into me I didn't really do all that much offensively overall the cat calls last year the completion percentage the percentage of the Reds old you look at the the way that he threw the ball under duress of brought the ball into the ground or throw the ball out of bounds looks like you they want to take hits me Tom Brady hears all of that and what the debate Buccaneers hope is that they benefit and and the NFL benefits that Brady hears all the naysayers it is motivated by it it goes out has a bag up your down the take down their Tampa Bay which I would not put past them as great of a player is Tom Brady is even though he is as old as he is I would expect Brady to do everything that he can within his power to be great again in twenty twenty yeah I think for Brady you know I I think that he's got also I think what would put a chip on his shoulder not just you know the fact that he was a hundred ninety ninth taking aids is production company one ninety nine productions but even now like I think he believed he was going to have a market that really didn't materialize you know point as much as we thought you know the the.
"casto" Discussed on Startups For the Rest of Us
"This is the eighth and final installment of our series with Craig Hewitt of Casto's but don't worry if you love following a founder week by week listen at the end of this episode for a preview of the founders. We're going to follow next in. In our last episode we covered how Craig launched a big experiment instead of requiring a credit card at the start a fourteen day trial. He took away that requirement and expanded the volume of people coming into Casto. Aso's free trial funnel. The big question was would this translate into increased conversions so we removed credit card from our trial sign up process and everything about that has gone really well With the exception of our child debate conversion ratio which which we kind of knew wouldn't wouldn't be great just because we we have some things in like our on boarding process that aren't exactly right and you know some you X. things that needs some tweaking and and things like that that we knew when we started that are trial to pay conversion ratio would take a big hit and always does when you go from credit card to know credit card. But we're still a little bit below like the the benchmark that that I set for us of like ten percent is kind of low low watermark. Were a little bit below that and so we're definitely still growing or growth is about the same as it was when we required credit card so so that's cool but the goal obviously with this is like if removed the credit card. A whole bunch more people come in the door and we convert some percentage of those two are at the end of the month. We have more paying customers more new paying customers than we did when we had to credit card and at this point it's it's about the same so that's not entirely unexpected and like this month in terms of product. We've been doing a lot to make the on on boarding. And the the point to where a customer gets value out of the APP really quick and really easy and I think that will turn into more paying customers and more trial conversions and Kinda new like getting ready to remove the credit card from trial sign up processes the first step in the second step. You know this whole month. We've been working on a lot of you. I design improvements to to improve L. Experience. So it's kind of expected we knew going into it that it would probably be like this took them to see it actually often is like this. This is a bummer. Yeah when you make big changes like this I feel like in your head you see several pathways branching out ahead of you. Oh and you can see multiple realities at once. One reality is like. Oh my gosh. This is like the magic silver bullet and is going to double a growth overnight with no additional work and then there's like a notch down where it's Mike. It'll take a little bit of additional work but it's expected and then there's another notch down where it's like. Well it's GonNa take a lot of work and then there's no down where this is going to be a shit show and it's GonNa take our the growth and Blah Blah Blah and there's a spectrum of that right but it's like you see them as a founder all at once and you consciously optimistically secretly. Hope that it'll be the first one but you know it's going to be the middle one and you prepare yourself mentally in the team mentally for you know for reality right. It's like optimism pessimism and everything in between his at his Kind of summit up. Well for you. Yeah no exactly. I mean we knew going into it that we're GONNA go from you know. Our previous like trump emerge ratio of thirty five or forty percent to you less than ten or ten. And that you know we have a fair amount of work to do and I think we talked about before like the onus is on us now to provide that value really really quickly and convert people and then they have to Kinda proactively go out and bought their wallet whereas before it was like more marketing efforts say like hey this tool is so great. Come sign up. Zero graded is put your credit card in. And then if you don't If you don't cancel then you convert basically and I think the the thing with this that I don't here. A lot of people talking about is like kind of Zombie customers. Right like there's a lot of people myself included that go sign up for something and then if I don't remember to to cancel the trial even though these people are sending me emails and stuff then I get charged and I can imagine a fair amount of our growth before and people that have credit card upfront have growth just from Zombie customers. So we don't know in that respect. I feel really good about only having people who really want to be there but it just makes the effort effort that we have to go through to grow that much more so looking back now that you have basically almost two months of data on it was it the right call. Yeah Yeah it's the right call absolutely because you know. I think I can share this. Because we're in like this time. Warp of podcasting land the goal with the removing moving. The credit card from the trial sign up is not to offer a two week trial where people don't have to put their credit card in its to offer a time unlimited trial so usage usage limited trial. So we're GONNA go ultimately to something like Whiskey. It does work with St has a free tier where they can. You can publish three videos For Free and when you want to publish the fourth then you have to pay and we're GONNA do basically that so the no credit card fourteen day trial process like right now is is a stopping helping point. We want to get some some metrics around this and make sure that we're able to support the people what you've answered. Yes or are you know. Support ticket volume is almost identical to what it was before all all these you X.. And support improvements that. We're making in the APP early to make that better I think and so this is opened the top four funnel a lot. So we're getting five hundred new trials a month at this point and the cool thing about this as we get to nurture a whole lot. More people in those five hundred new trials sign ups. But then if we're able to expand that even more from a a temporal perspective to say we have five hundred New People in every month and we can nurture them as long as they're in that free trial as long long as we need to or as long as they're kind of interested in broadcasting until they're ready to get serious about it then I think some of these people that come in and sign up and say I want to start podcast but they probably aren't ready to start a podcast. In the next two weeks that will be able to nurture them along and then convert them down the line when they already which could be two months from now and that's cool so this stage rally nows kind of stopping point. We want to prove that like you said it's not going to break our growth and totally overwhelm overwhelm our support team. I think the answer to both those so far is like Yep. We're still are definitely growing. Our support is actually about the same as it was before. And so we're able to to keep all all these people in our trial world and help them and encourage them and support their way and stuff for an even longer period of time until they're ready to convert then that's is just even better so I mean to summarize it's you're moving from a time limited free trial to a usage based premium model. Yeah yeah absolutely and just because is it fits the the journey of customer better right like you decide you want to start a podcast. Two weeks is such a random ambiguous amount of time for you to decide like okay. They have to do this in the next two weeks so I think we'll be able to capture these people that are coming in saying. I WANNA SORTA podcasts. I'm not quite sure I don't have my episodes recorded. Yada Yada Yada they. They can feel comfortable staying within our world until they've published those three episodes and then when the fourth one comes to upgrade their plan. So yeah I like it. It's another big bet. We talked a couple episodes ago. These are the bats that they can go either way but if they go in your favor these are the ones that can double your growth. You know that this testing minor tweaks to this and that copy that can get you at ten twenty percent thirty percent growth but to double overnight. It's pricing acing changes. It's radically changing your funnel. And that kind of thing and obviously removing their credit card was one step towards that and going premium is another another step in that direction moving to a premium model is another big bet for Craig. I WANNA call out the steps. He took to get to this point. I moving to a trial with no credit card up front and then moving to a usage based trial that will be less of a trial in more of a free plan. It's a great peek behind the curtain. Because because you don't often get to see the decisions that founders make when they change key pieces of their business pricing tiers trial funnels. Craig's servicemen. That Zombie customers would go away. With premium is also good for the long term viability of the business and good for potential customers as well. With usage based premium customers. Customers are happy because they don't have to worry about getting charged if they don't start the podcast in the first two weeks and Craig doesn't have to worry about Zombie customers who are being charged but not really receiving.

Most people in the know don't use UPNP or universal plug and play they disable it. Whenever possible. The problem is there are still some modern services in the vice is that require UPNP. I think I'm almost positive that. The crown cast tells us the crop Casto requires UPNP's in the problem is with UPNP you're pretty much opening up your network to always be scanning for other UPNP type devices. So just so just works. Well, that's great from a user experience standpoint. But it's terrible from a security standpoint. Yes. In fact, if you search for chrome cast in UPNP, you could all these things saying, please help me use my chrome cast with UPNP disabled. And unfortunately, Google says yet, no. If you do have UPNP, enable, and you have one of the hundred and sixteen models of routers in believe that knit led three sixty has a list of them. You should check to see if there's a rounder update or a.

"On them now cats sometimes dig Casto's, you know, my orange tabby Casey he wears a cowboy hat whenever we go to do our therapy visits to kids into the folks at the memory care center. But I try to put him one of those headdress lion. Headdresses, you know, it flattened desires not a good thing to do, you know? And that's the thing. Cats have dignity. They really really don't want to be embarrassed on Halloween. How did you gave keys you know, to like wearing the hat. Did. He just go for it right away. Or do you just use them? Really yummy. I'm he treats. Well, I did use treats. But I put the cowboy hat so it fit on the side of his head and not on his ears. You know, like a cowboy after they've been on the range, and they're kind of tired, and they take their hat and drape it over to their shoulder. He did that really well, but when I try to make him into the wizard of Oz, orange tabby style. He's like, no, no. So it didn't it didn't work. So I think it's important for us. The both say to our listeners is much as we love dressing up for Halloween. Ask yourself be candid does your dog really want to be a four legged Batman or does. Your cat really wanna wear a Tutu. Don't you agree? Dana. Yeah. You know? Absolutely. Isn't that the Tutu's a great option? It's also, you know, not not too invasive not in their face. So you have to definitely know your pets personality and style, and if they're more of a low rider or they can go for the full shebang Yuccas. There are some dogs. Don't you agree? That are like, yeah. I look good. Put me in another outfit. There's some clothes horses out. There. You got sparkles. Like, we got time. Like, no problem. Well, we're talking with Dana Humphry. She is the pet lady. And we're going to take a quick commercial break. And when we come back we're going to identify some ideas because you're probably like what can I do for the holidays? What are some goodies? I can treat my dog or cat. Two and the pet lady Dana Humphry has a great list of ideas for you to consider. So you guys know the drill you got to just sit and stay will be right back..

"So we're here as a committee as the chairman of the law and justice committee to make sure that we're improving our standards here in michigan and we're making it safe for michigan children representative casto what does it mean that through this settlement the victims of the monster have agreed to give up some of their efforts to strengthen michigan's laws many would be under the impression that via this settlement their voices would be louder is that not necessarily the case here well i don't know exactly what they have agreed to in that other than the number figure out there but at the end of the day i think the point is that there are certain things regarding litigation and dawn retroactive or as far as governmental immunity that they may have come to an agreement on independent of the legislature at the end of the day though where's we're the those that are elected to make the laws and we're going to look at it in our own way through our own committee here hearings regardless of what they've agreed upon as far as our great state of michigan representative you know this ugly ugly situation has certainly been food for thought for a lot of individuals politicians and or otherwise how his michigan stacked up as far as sex abuse laws go we've had people come in and testify that were on the bottom and as far as the states when it comes to civil and when it comes to criminal we're in the middle so we're both sides from a criminal standpoint we're going to extend statute of limitations on criminal sexual assault second degree and third degree because frankly and i agree there is no statute of limitations for a criminal i'm the civil and we're going to extend those as far as civil lawsuits to give that civil justice to those that are victims and survivors and we're going to extend that as well from three years to potentially the number we're still working on and as children they only have one year from the age of eighteen so then only get something nineteen so i think even on the civil side they're little short we're going to work them into that we are one of the states that is making sure we're combating and preventing child sexual assault and sexual abuse clearly representative casto one of the.

"At its it feels foreign well i think it has i think there's probably what is happening and this seems kind of transparent is that the the kind of the pop culture aspect of politics who's a bigger part of people's lives now and certainly the deaths of people die just the news in general uh because that is something that is is shared you don't really have a choice on at you can't you can pick what silo of news you want but you can't really pick the news itself and i i wonder if if that is you know like saturday night live used to be mostly a pop culture show with some aspects of the political content now i mean i don't watch it but this sense i get as it's mostly a political show with some aspects of culture it's a dea probably halfandhalf it definitely um definitely is a show that be the only eat those are the only skits that seem to get traction outside of there was just they will skip doing while ago about the the mr pumpkins tom hanks with some pumpkin fellow i saw that a bunch even though they don't watch the show the other one seemed to move out all seemed to be politically based i think part of that has to do with the casto because they don't really have like a just a superstar in the show anymore kate mckinnon is probably the closest but they don't have those two or three fourths of nature performers like they used to have like avakum will pharaohs on the show somebody like that where they just by themselves by sheer talent and personality would become this viral thing or even like the andy sandberg and the the lonely allen guys and things like that now it seems like it's mostly the political stuff that's gonna take off and even that stuff um it's almost too close to home i don't like the baldwin trump stuff it's a wide like i've i have trouble like accepting trump is a pair to because he's the the actual reallife version of it is such a parody i don't know how you parody of parity you know weren't take a break to talk about delta airlines my favorite out airline is delta i am platinum medallion oh yeah one of the reasons is i love the fido tap it allows me.
