"By some countries but the big moratorium prevented overall destruction of many species and what the recent surveys suggest with the exception of greenland right whale. It still seems to be in trouble. All the others are making notable progress and my hope is that things stay upright even less hunting. That's a very important point to make is. Progress is not unrealistic. If you set your mind to it you can bring great lake. Expect to life you can let endangered species become no longer endangered. It is possible to to help out. You can't give up now. To what degree is climate. Change a player in your concern about the future. Well climate change could be a big player. There are of course projections that we're going to have at least two degrees some perhaps more of global temperature elevation in the next hundred years or less. That doesn't sound like much but if you look into the details and go into the weeds you see that it's going to make a very substantial difference to places where it's going to make. A huge difference are the polar regions because it just so happens that the polls get affected earlier and much more heavily than temperate and tropical regions during periods of climate change. We know from From ancient records. It's the challenge of our age. It absolutely has like many other challenges. What it requires his thought and application and if one assumes that you don't really need to know that much you can solve the problems through gut instinct and we're not going to make any progress on this or any other issue with regard to climate change. I think that there's at least a few things that are just straight physics and if you ignore them then you might as well ignore gravity. So why wouldn't we coalesce behind the idea that further melting of the ice caps and that artika and greenland are just not a good idea and if the correlation is with fossil fuels. The next conclusion is that you've got to do something about that. Spoken like a true scientist. Ross macphee thanks for writing the end of the mega-fauna just reading through your book. "Videos in in our classroom. Oh good are you using the classroom. Europe program that we made and i just would love to plug this. It's a free gift we've made for teachers and it's taken are one hundred and fifty. Tv shows and broken them into five. Hundred little teachable clips. And i just love the thought that history teachers like you and french teachers like your wife can Take advantage that and help take their students traveling as they teach. That program works so well with the sites that you see in the history that you give And with our having opportunity to share those we can explore. If you will a lot of different places that we wouldn't have on a trip simply just because of sex. That's great so now as a history teacher. How how are you incorporating this time. We're living through are you. Is there any sort of connection that you're sharing with your students. yes it's we're actually covering the middle ages that we were talking about the plague and how people were really afraid and doing a lot of natural. social distancing. obviously times are different so quite as interconnected. but it's also doesn't thing in kind of separating themselves from people who they knew were ill or people who they knew traveling And just making a lot of connections with today with the obvious updates of of modern life. But you know the derivation of why we say. Bless you when somebody sneezes i would love. This might be fun free students. This is it tour guide story. But i believe it the plague which devastated so much of europe i mean entire cities would lose a third of their population. When this happened in the first sign of it was he would sneeze. And if somebody sneezed. People thought. Well that's the beginning of the end of this person. So bless you great. Yeah so not not great but not great. But it's it's it's always love. The humanize humanize the history. I call it the random knowledge which yeah the kids get a kick out of. But that's that's a lot of the interesting things. And i think that's one of the things that cove it allowed me to do. It was kind of explore beyond beyond your mainstays beyond the the big headliners. If you will yeah good for you for being teacher. I've got so much respect for teachers. So thanks michael and best wishes to you and your wife. Well thank you all the best and keep on travel. Keep on travel. "Barscelona on travel. With rick steves. Is spanish tour guide. Or hey rome on this. Facebook page is traveling with her. Hey it's a conversation we had just before the pandemic broke out. Let's just finish with just a quick a discussion of how we can connect with the local culture and this catalan as distinct from spain. if we want to go to one of the bars or one of the tapas bars talk about what is distinct about tapas in catalonia and mentioned a little bit about the vermouth bar scene. Because i know that's trendy right now and it is becoming very trendy now One very important things. I say all the people that can let me just try to learn Three or four ways to say hello to people in the local language in spain. We're very fortunate. We are multi cultural country and we have four official languages in spain. I always say when. I'm teaching that you can go to a sandwich. Shop in madrid is the a menu with four languages on it and they're all spanish languages. Yeah and one of them would be catalog hotline we have the past can also the collision especially in barcelona. If you just say bon deer which is good morning in catalonia believe it or not instead of saying oh good money just assume that they were going to understand your board. It kind sounds a little bit rude okay but if you say bondi And then you start speaking. If you can a few more words that would be perfect. You have no idea how many doors that open and that is particularly helpful in the city like barcelona that is getting tired of the noisy tourists that good morning death whereas my coke right you can go. Local no a few local words used the local tempo Observe a cultural chameleon here. And you're gonna drink and eat catholism and opens a lot of doors and you might get a little bit of extra attention from the attendant behind the counter. What is that distinctly catalan dish. That you'll have when you go to a bar and you have the tapas a top. I could have any of them. You know but the when. I say this to the people that say oh but anchovies trying to injuries in barcelona and should we seem spain. There nothing to do with the answer that you know here in this side of the pond because we take up the job i agree. It's all little and also the they have depression. Should we thought there'd be eighteen vinegar for a few hours and they are cute also entries as well and talking about the vermouth. Forty-five wine and normally is not like drinking wine with a meal is just drink it as an appetizer whether it is for lunch or dinner in bars. They'll they'll at these bars that are trendy as vermouth bars. And they have some beautiful appetizers out there in the wonderful vermouth beautiful atmosphere. It's kind of israel that's right and not even in the touristy areas in Goofy section by the cottage rather mar-. You know there is one very very famous in there. They have been there now. I think for about one hundred twenty years the same family running the business. And also i want to if you allow me to tell that there is a little Drink in catalonia. That not everybody knows which is not champagne you know covered is the spanish is the same process. They have to change the name for legal reasons to the people that live in champagne. Don't want it to call champ. Except for how that and don't it's the same thing but cut cover and the drink is a fifty wine which is halfway between regular wine and cover and the champagne it with an x at the beginning champagne chopinet and there are many many local parts of glass of that is about one fifty two euros. It's about two dollars for a glass of local kind of campaign. Yeah and just. I'm very careful because he's not very it's not very harding alcohol featuring three or four really cold when you move then you feel rolled around rights. Yeah thank you so much for giving us an intimate look and wonderful city. Does i hope to see in. Barcelona said well. I hope so too. Thank you so much. thank you travel with. "My background. You know with the songs is that i grew up on a host where it wasn't very musical so i didn't have the blessing liam had my parents. Don't play any instruments and right didn't really listen to the songs much. When i was growing up. I found an lp founded an industrial collection of stuff a duster dinan. It said twenty best irish rebel songs and patriotic ballads and it was like opening a pandora's box and it was something that my mother had said to me on all we shouldn't we shouldn't be listening to those patriotic song because we lived up in the north where there was violence on the fringes and always dirge feelings. I remember listening to it with the earphones on and it was just like a rebirth for me. I was probably about twelve. And i just said to myself. This is the future. So i sat down and learn practically every irish rebel song that was ever written in. My repertoire is probably four to five hundred songs and when we were going off to football games you know big football games would all go off in a big flotilla of coaches and mortar buses. And i'd always sit in the backseat. That'd be invited during the backseat with all the big toe flags and i think it's the main reason i never got bullied as a teenager because i always knew the versus every song everybody knows the chorus but not everybody knows all the verses and that was my strength grownup was the big boys. Always said break macfayden. He knows the versus anybody who knows the verse. They're important part of the little minstrel boy. Being brought down the actor thing all diverse. You know i was looking through a whole list of all different irish ballads and so on and there's so many different topics. Basically you got seventeen eight rebellion. You've got the war of independence. He got immigration. You've got drinking. You got funny songs. And i know you like rebel songs. What's it what's a good rebel song. Well like the older ones from the one thousand nine sixteen period. I like the foggy do which talks about one thousand nine hundred sixteen. This is the war of independence kind of area even before that we had a big rebellion in one thousand nine sixteen because it was a military disaster and the fact that we can write songs about defeats and make them still sign honorable. And they're very respectable. Songs are respectful on this. It respects our patriotism and pays homage to like There's a line in the in the song. The foggy ju it talks about them and from the plains of royal me because we have kind called me and from the plains of royal me. Strong man came hurrying through while brittan hung's with their long range guns sailed through the foggy. Do pretentious huns. He adds no sticks the knife and a little bit put dot talks these young strong strapping irish cheering. I mean even if they lost. I feel like their heroes. Yeah do that again. That of course it was so cool. I'm from the plains of royal me strongmen to while huns with their long range guns sale into the do whether those young men did march in or not. It doesn't matter just sounds great. It's propaganda but it's good and it's good to celebrate your patriotism three music now. If i was your british overlord i wouldn't want singing that song. Not back then. But i have brought thousands of british tourists around ireland. And they'd have the rebel songs as well all the british people and they were slated. It's when we get anguish tours to earn car particularly where he play the alaska to sing some songs is that right the british yes and sometimes i tried to explain. You know. i don't want to offend. Anybody and i prefer to sing songs. Peace now But you see. There's genre of rebel songs. That i've been written in the say thirty or forty years which are pretty hard line and repair more so to the recent conflict in the north. There's one called go on home british soldiers and it's pretty hard light. I remember being in navarra one team in the temple bar dublin and the republic of ireland had played a soccer match that night and about fifty young ads come in after the game and started singing. That navarro had heretofore been full of happy english tourists and the song goza go on home. British soldiers go on home. That's here we we don't do i want to do but i'm just giving you an example of the song condoning it and just say. This song cleared the bar. All the english tourist got help them got up and walked out. That's honest about it. There is an element of more contemporary rebel. Shows that you have to be very careful where you're seeing them and a lot of people would refuse to sing them. But i'm just giving you an example and because the song if you want an example of it here it is go on home. Pretty soldiers go on home. Have you got no beep beep home of your own for eight hundred years. We fought you without fear. We'll fight you for eight hundred more. So that'll sort of i wouldn't be. I would be a little uncomfortable. You've got immigration songs. You've got love songs. Are you suggest. The street subjects Usually it's a drink immigration and loaf drink immigration and love. but it certainly doesn't happen in order. Sometimes you get drunk then you get lookie and then you better emigrant tell me you're sitting in bars a lot taking requests. What's the most dreaded request that you don't wanna hear but does the wild rover the wild rover. Yes why don't you like that because I sometimes have to sing three or four times a night and it just gets into my feelings. It's worse than being accident. What about danny boy. Danny boy i love you get tired of it. You don't get tired of it because it's the test for for a singer to sing it. I think i'm not saying. I do a perfect job. And scott a huge range from very low to very high and I just loved the song. But i love to hear people sing it in context which actually played originally danny boy was called. A derriere puts steve talking earlier. Denny boy was the dairy air. Diminish the dairy dairy the arkansas when northern ireland go to the commonwealth games. That's the anthony believe it or not. Well i thought you'd get tired of it but if you're not tired of it let's finish our interview with liam reirden from county cork singing a song from dairy danny boy donnie. "Van back to our That was probably the best exercise over. Shut the pickup by a mile and you had to rebecca upstream. That'd be hard work. This is one of those Rental things where you take off on a canoe and then you. They agreed to meet you somewhere in. They drive you back right from being in the door on. I love that right. It's one of the most idyllic dreamy afternoons. I've had in my whole life of traveling in europe was floating out the door don river from bena to just where you missed your boat drop. Pick up spot. You're surrounded by castles and charming little towns and and you're looking forward to a wonderful dinner that evening and i could imagine get carried away with your singing and overshoot your destination and then the next day we were in charlotte and we quite literally bumped into an extra for the movie ever asked her with drew barrymore and got to talking with him and the next day His nickname was big. Al and then the next day big alan vita onto the set so we spent the day on the set in the dordogne region beautiful show and actually got to see a scene with drew barrymore and the whole bit so it was a memorable trip for for many many reasons. Not just having the black line and keio or and at the bridge and and that's why gras but also experienced that. Probably not a lot of people get to have on their trip to the door to region the black wine and or it's so good for gras and the amazing market scenes the castles overlooking the door dohan river valley the canoe rides and Meeting movie stars.
