"It's Friday. Okay? Friday. Hey, Friday today excited about that. You know, I was just I was just thinking kind of thinking back to roughly this week last year kind of a pivotal point in all of our lives, if you remember Because March 5th fish. This was still a time when I think a lot of us thought things were still quasi normal. We think the world hadn't changed quite yet. We knew it was out there. We knew something was happening. But I went back and looked at like headlines from this week in the Tribune Daily Herald, Sometimes a local papers and stuff. And it just it's it's interesting because we were still kind of going about our business. Karen about lots of other stuff that this time the World Health Organization still hadn't officially named it A pandemic. Wouldn't do that till March, 11th. We lost six lives to the virus back then nationwide. At that point, maybe more that those were the official counts. Then some headlines that I pulled from This time this day last year build ban red light cameras in Illinois moves out of House Rules Committee We were, we thought that was a big deal red light cameras that that was a big deal Back then. Chicago Tribune, Illinois Recreational Marijuana customers spent 35 million bucks in February 1 of the strongest showings ever. In any state lawmakers proposed bill that would allow barbers and others to practice without a state license. Few weeks later, a few short weeks, barbers were out of business. Virtually For the illegal haircuts. Remember those Casey Urlacher? He was making news back then. Then there was this one I saw in the Daily Herald this day last year. Coronavirus patient released from Arlington Heights Hospital to home isolation. I remember feeling like relieved. Remember that person he was it was we're watching. Um and we were there was a couple. And then there was this other man who got infected and he was there. Um, getting treatment and he was released and we were. We were happy about that. We thought, well, gosh, this maybe isn't so bad. I don't know. Um, I think that you know, we were already knowing that this was real. This was the thing we didn't know what it meant for our lives yet, though I think it was like that weekend of 14th 15th and recalling the weekend. People were celebrating ST Patty's Day when it was real. I think I remember we read a I was out with my family that a family dinner downtown somewhere at a little restaurant and remember seeing all the Throngs of ST Patty's Day celebrators out on the street and thinking long. I don't think that's what we're splits the mayor already given us a warning, and health officials are already saying, Hey, you can't be doing that. Remember, Remember that feeling of just watching all that happening thinking? She's all these behaviors we used to do. Just suddenly Don't seeing all that safe. Remember being with just a small group of people, and that was kind of when the buzz was around like, you know what? Listen, that everyone's like, OK, what do we do yet? And then all of a sudden we got the news that, like, you know, restaurants were shutting down and then I was with my sister at the time and then, like immediately after the news came out, she got a phone call was the restaurant where my nephews when your birthday was supposed to be in there like we can't do it now, and it just kept snowballing and snowballing, snowballing. And then a few days later, you know, I'm on the radio talking about March madness getting canceled and all the post opens and I think a lot of people think about the sports part of it because the MBA remember had an infected player. And then they said, we're shutting down the season. Remember I was at the last Hawks game before this season resume was AH Hawks sharks came And that day. Actually went to a butt that day had was when there were some NBA game. So again, you're everybody's kind of like on the fence. Like what is this? We don't know. Is this to the stream and then I was remember being in the Blackhawks game and I don't know this. Yeah. B And that was the last Hawks Get the Hawks Sharks game. I think it was. I don't know Tuesday or Thursday, but We're starting to suspect everyone. I started to get very hypochondriac Cherie, you know, like, really, really suspicious because I remember walking to my building lobby. And there were these ST Patty's Day people who were clearly they had a few green beers and they had painted their faces with green paint, and they they were going full out. And I'm like, I'm gonna go in near them that they are doing the wrong thing. It was. It was almost at that stage. So where was like some people hadn't fully like, you know, gone all in on pandemic mode, and it was still like, you know, the half joking like Ho ho. We can't shake hands and some people, really. You'll remember this cab because you cover sports. Rudy, go bear. Remember him going around touching all the microphones before the news conference? Hi. Look, Corona. I'm spreading it. And then days later, he actually tested positive. Remember that? Yeah, and nobody thought about masks back then. I mean, we weren't thinking just for doctors. That's that's it. The Holy Preserving We weren't thinking about mass. We're thinking about toilet paper for some reasons. So the whole mass thing let's say even like in two years, you go to an airport. You have maybe a mild cold. You feel sniffles. Are you gonna wear masks? I'm asking you guys would like you to master here to stay? I think Master along timing and think of how well nobody has had a cold. Nobody. I mean, my little granddaughter who's 10 months old has never had a cold in her life. She has never had think of your kids when you know they grew up or whatever..

"Coming this rock weekend and weak out. I don't think that politicians to be able to pick their constituents way need to get some sort of reform going As far as redistricting. We get a chance every 10 years, and it never seems to get anywhere. Let's welcome Marie Dillon, she's policy director at the better government associate back to WLS. Marie, How are you? I'm great. How are you? I'm still hanging in there. Well, the completion of the 2020 census begins a process that will shape the maps for the next decade. I know. The BJ and other advocates have campaigned for years for a constitutional amendment that would assign redistricting to an independent panel. Not surprisingly, that hasn't happened. Why Marie Well, I think the obvious question is that is that incumbent would prefer to draw their own district. Right. In other words, politicians want to pick out their constituents. That doesn't seem to be very democratic. No, it doesn't. How many times have we had an effort to amend the Constitution for District and I remember at least two, maybe three times. Do you recall? Well, it's been sort of nonstop ever since some the 2010 census. I think there were three drives to actually put an amendment on the ballot. They were done through a petition drive. Some citizens would do it themselves. But that mark all three times that was defeated ever since then, since the Supreme Court seems to have foreclosed that possibility ever since, and what we focused on is trying to get the lawmakers to either put an amendment on the ballot themselves because they don't have as many barriers as it is with you, or even to pass a law. Um, it's too late now, obviously, for an amendment for the next redrawing they still could pass a law But I'm you know, I'm not holding my breath. Breathe, You know, maybe a silver lining to this very nasty covert cloud that we have experienced is the fact that will never make the deadline and they'll have to go to the bipartisan commission if they do so and not picking sides here, but least Republicans will have a little bit of say in redistricting. But do you think that's gonna happen? Well, First of all, you know, I know you had Mike Dorf on the other day, and I agree with him. They're gonna find a work around. I don't think they're gonna be sitting on their hands waiting for those numbers to come around. But let's pretend they did. I think we're kind of missing the point anyway. I agree. It would be better if Democrats and Republicans did this together. Um, but when partisans brother and chief that's inherently unfair, so of course it would be better if an independent commission did it. Um, since the lawmakers are going to do it, there are some principles that they could follow. We did a project last year where we actually hired Rob Caroline. Gentle Lewis. Theo draw maps for us on by the way they used estimated numbers, which I think is what the lawmakers going to end up doing, Um and what we had them drawn according to the principles of independent man making some of those principles I seek. The lawmakers will follow anyway, obviously it because everyone to protect minority representation and I feel like they Are committed to doing that. That would be a prime a priority. No matter who draws them. Will they draw them compact on avoid busting up communities? I don't think they're going to do that, if it doesn't suit their purposes. The things they shouldn't do is to build district around their own homes. I think when we do end up getting the maps, you'll see pretty much 118 district's with each one public one and a few. Maybe we'll have two incumbents in them, but they do They build the district around their own homes and the other thing they factor in that they shouldn't and that we didn't is, you know past voting behavior so that they can start the Democrats and the Republicans. Into these district, you know, at their own convenience. Yeah, it is a real rigged a system not to borrow an overused phrase in the last couple years, But I'm looking at your congressional district right now at the better government dot org's Web site. Better golf dot org's and your map makes so much more sense. It just seems so much more logical. I want all my listeners to go toe better go down organ. Take a look at this. Well, I'm not going to hold my breath that they're going to self police, but we can just keep talking about it and try to put pressure on them. Thanks so much for your time. Have a terrific weekend and again if you want to Seymour and read more. Goethe better Gove dot org's Marie Thank you so much. Thank you. He's tanned. He's rested and his pardon? In addition to listening actions taken on immigration trade in the military, the president reflected on what he called the dangers that threaten the nation. As the world's most powerful nation, America faces constant threats and challenges from abroad. But the greatest danger we face is a loss of confidence in ourselves A loss of confidence in our national greatness. A nation is only as strong as its spirit. We are only as dynamic as our pride. We are only as vibrant as the faith that beats in the hearts of our people. No nation can long thrive that loses faith in its own values, History and heroes. But these are the very sources of our unity and our vitality. The president did acknowledge there would be a new administration today, but he did not mention Joe Biden's name in the 20 minute speech.
