Josh Hammer on How Biblical Law Makes You Free

"And so josh let me just follow up. You know so. So in in the jewish belief of the old testament. It's this belief in the law that was given by god. And so if you were to even say that on a college campus you'll be ridiculed and mocked that the divine would give you away to live your life using the best reason based you can. Can you help equip the audience here of how do they tell their friends on. Secular type college campus. No there actually is a law and if you follow it will actually make you more free. You help us walk through that. Yeah now this is a fabulous question if they saw him and i both have a lot of thoughts on this on this exact topic actually so there is this herod dot. There was this their mentality. That is really kind of creeped in in the united states and a lot of western civilization for the past half-century really more than that the past century century and a half at least a lot of it is as intellectually downstream of enlightenment of particularly bad strands of enlightenment. Saw it i would add the alignment obviously complicated the scottish light of a heck of a lot better for example than other brands. But let's simplify a lot of this kind of this intuition that we are free when we are we have maximum consumer choice that we are free when we can use whatever social media platform. "Or listening to from wherever you can go to the playlist go find those earlier episodes so what i'm going to do today is i'm going to count down the top ten. Get to the top five. I'm going to tell you a little bit about my lessons. And my memories from those five episodes. But before i do that i thought i do some other interesting things. Give you some background give you some data so among the ten guests. I will say this as well if you are. If you do wireless podcast you know that each week i have a guest and each week. There's at least one episode this just me typically relatively short and so when i talk about this top ten it does not include any of the only episodes it includes only the episodes that i had a guest on. So i'm gonna talk to you about the ken most downloaded episodes with guests and so if if it included some of mine three or four of these wouldn't have made the top ten but these are the folks that joined us that people found be valuable and i want to reward them and recognize them and if those who didn't see all of them a chance to get connected to some of these great episodes so a few things about them. Three of these episodes were released in january three in february two in march one in april. Probably not a big surprise that the older the longer the episodes have been there the more likely to have more downloads. About one of the episodes actually released in june. It was one of the top five. Actually so the other thing to know about these guests that i have is that while most of them that actually all of them could be categorized as authors as it turns out all of them could be categorized in other ways as well so two of the tan are professors would be probably considered their main role in life. Three of them. I would consider. I think they would consider themselves to be entrepreneurs four of them to be their primary role to be consultants. Three of them to be business leaders leaders organizations not necessarily the opera or business owner and then again all of them will be authors so some professors some entrepreneurs business leaders in some consultants. Another thing way to split the the content up would be to say what kinds of topic areas were the most downloaded. And if i can take a little liberty and and play with the or how to organize them just a little bit i would say that three of the tan were about our role as a leader and understanding that role better to were very specifically about the roles that we play as excuse me the skills that we have as leaders and then five others that while they are leadership skills they would also fall more into personal development or individual development as well as leadership development categories so many of them half of them fully fall into that category. And so that gives you some background about them in one other thing as it turns out two of the top five actually have lessons from chickens. Neither of them were about chickens but two of my guest actually as it turns out brought up lessons to be learned from chickens. Take that for what you wish right. So let me. Now do my best casey kasem and give you the ten. The top ten starting from number ten in the number ten slot was an episode called leaders as teachers with thomas. The long it was great episode. It came out in march number. Nine is an episode. Called reframing problems with thomas wendell windows board and this episode was all.

"Let me tell you the productive podcaster is a podcast for podcasters these show is designed to help you to be more productive than what you're doing to make sure your podcast same thing about work, but about you putting everything in place to make it enjoyable for you and the people paying attention to what your message is. That means you can focus on other things instead of whether you have enough listeners. What do you have enough money coming in? What do you have enough download you want to have all these things but we want to show you how to put things in place so that you don't have to worry about those things all the time. Now, we start off every episode of the productive podcaster with a segment. We like to call pros and cons pros and cons. Now what is pros and cons pros and cons is our way of helping you about giving you some helpful tips to make sure that your podcast can go off smoothly so you don't have to worry about all the other things that other people deal with now one of the things that you can do is be yourself. We talked about that, you know before but I really mean this time be yourself and I believe yourself I'm saying stop trying to replicate other podcasters. Yeah, we hear it out there someone trying to sound just like another person who has a podcast dead end and it's okay to admire someone it's okay to wished. If you even had a podcast a successful someone but they have their audience Their audience wants to hear them. You have to build your audience who wants to hear you. If you build your audience trying to sound like them. Guess what they're going to go them. They're not going to come to you. So stop trying to get you someone else. Stop trying to sound like someone else. I mean, yeah, if it's like, you know, you have a radio show you can't be Casey Kasem. So don't worry about that. That's my weak attempt at a Casey Kasem impression. But the thing is you cannot be the other person. There's only one year. There's only one them bu bu because if you be yourself when you're on the radio your audience, they May Roam the thing a lot of us try to rush it and we figure if I sound like this person I'll get that on his now to grow to build and so forth. No, no. No, that's not how it works. Be yourself. Yes, you may not have anyone listening to you right now to keep being yourself over and over again. You can tweak some the way you produce your shows quick summer segments of his show but always be you because that is who the audience will relate to the more you try to sound like someone else the worst. It will be the more you try to be someone other than yourself the more you're people will go to that person so sound like you practice sounding confident as a practice sounding like, you know, what you're doing as yourself. Don't try to be someone else for yourself. That way you will be a productive podcaster on your own, right? So that is pros and cons for today. What we're going to do right now guys, we're going to go take a break and when we do we'll come back with our very very special. guests for the day.

"And archivist for all things, Rankin bass to see you again kids to see you. Thanks for having me. I'm just so sad because I used to get so excited about Easter when I was a little kid not anymore, though. Now known. It's my eggs exit gone, too old. Rick, come back back. It was just always was the start of, you know, springtime colorful Easter eggs I love watching Easter shows, though, on television. So at least I got that going for me, which is nice. Yep. Yeah. Well, you have to watch them on DVD or blue ring now, because the networks don't show, three Rankin bass specials that I'm not sure I would say on the Christmas specials. Oh, yeah. Right. It's just the other holidays. So taking the hit. Well, AMC brought back a lot of them from ABC family last Christmas, and really brought him to a whole new audience, you know, people who are watching the Walking Dead, so commercials for rank and fast. So I would think EMC could bring the the Easter specials and put them back on. And they would do just as well. You would imagine just mentioned the man singing that song about these two bunny is Fred Astaire, Rankin, bass spared. No expense. They got some hot name talent and all their specials, Christmas, and otherwise to. Yeah. Actually Fred Astaire, I think they got him the year. Well for Santa Claus is coming to town in nineteen seventy that was the same year that he did that. That little dance number the during the Oscars with Bob Hope. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And I think that's what brought him to the attention of Arthur Rankin. And he said, let's give Fred for this, and then Fred came back for the Easter bunny is coming to town and seventy seven so he must have really liked what he did with the first special that is because a lot of these big names are big names to older people like if their target audiences kids would kids really appreciate Burl Ives Mickey Rooney, Fred Astaire, so many of the actors that they use will they had such talent. You know, this, this is a time when they got people, not just because of marquee value, but because of their talent and you don't see that anymore. They get famous people just for the name and write their voice doesn't sound, any different than the next guy who is the voice of Peter cotton tail. I don't know the answer to that. You don't know the answer. I don't I wonder Rick if you will know the answer, Casey case it is Casey Kasem, provided, no that interest. Everything. You know this of Robin on the super friend ten shaggy free. Voice of January Q are iron tail. Peter salva. Vincent Price syncing fries. These aren't really big names, and some I got to meet his daughter at chiller theatre, which is one of the biggest shows that I do around the country. Stay like God. Daughter. No bedtime stories. I brought her sale signed card and she loved it. Yeah. Yeah. When you do these shows, and I know you do some of the local shows, but you travel all over doing these collectible shows he's memorabilia shows, what is the topic that usually comes up when people see Rankin bass, of course, it, it warms the heart because it holds such a special place in childhood. But what if people, what are people telling you are asking you? It's really funny. I've been doing this for so long, thirty years, plus years, and people come up to me and say, I look at your pictures, every day on your blog, and I, I see your band playing, and I wanna know what all that stuff is in the background, you have quite an extensive toy collection in your house. This is this is the kind of thing that. And then a lot of people thank me for doing what I do you know, because they love the books, they love, then I'm keeping it ally. So they appreciate what I do. And that's really the big payoff for me. It's not so much financial thing. It's more of the love of doing it, but I have to say because I'm a fan of. Books like you write your books in particular. But that those type of books your spare no expense. I mean you go out of your way you cover every possible angle, will I try west garlic is my business partner. And he's working diligently to get the six book out. Yeah. That's kind of cool to have a six pack of books now. Yeah. A library of Rankin, vast. But yeah, we like to put a lot of photos, a lot of the art work and the behind the scenes. We just lost more laws, who was the musical composer for Rankin bass. He was ninety five and a dare friend of mine, and he was a genius in the world of entertainment music, always, so whimsical it adds to the story, so. Well, it was beautiful and he, he never received the recognition he deserved. But I try to give that recognition and we're, we're going to dedicate the frosty book to have. Oh, nice. Yeah. Yeah, that's the new that'll be the, the sixth at the fussy six book. And I, I worked in, I really big project that I can't talk about on frosty at. But when it's announced everybody will know it. It's a big deal for for Christmas of twenty nine. All right. Well, twenty nineteen also is the time a Blu Ray for here comes Peter cotton tail came out. This was a WalMart exclusive. Yeah, what's what happened? Yeah. They, they mistakenly took the syndicated version, which was edited. And it's missing ten minutes of content. So can you imagine? Well, I picked it up right away and I bought multiple copies. And I'm like what in the heck? Yeah. On, on their over at universal have they, consulted with me head, they involve me. They wouldn't have made a snafu that probably cost them, you know, thousands of dollars. For more. People who bought that could exchange it for a new one or they were they, they have to call you. And you act out the other. Over the phone. They need to return and just send them a message that year bunch of goofs. You need to work things out with people that know what they're yeah. Right. Seems like a big faux pas. Yeah. And this was highly anticipated people were very anxious to see this again, finally on DVD, and it was ruined. Yeah. The Blu Ray. It looked like it was a good deal. Yeah. The packaging hand like a slip case and everything. But I mean when you're missing ten minutes show, that's too. That's too much to miss out on who is the voice of Seymour more frus Bill. Is it is his first name Dennis now. No close. I don't know. Danny Kaye, Danny Kaye. I'm sorry. I'm the same. I shave. Ten minutes in the missing crazy. Danny was actually really good friends with Arthur Rankin junior. And they travelled around the country, actually, to Japan as well about really. Yeah. He he went there to act out his parts for two specials that they did. They did the emperor's new clothes as well. They were going to do a series with Danny Kaye. I loved him and remind me with the Hans Christian Andersen movie that he was in was that Rankin, bass or was that otherwise that was the emperor's new clothes. That's what they call it. Yeah. Is called the enchanted world of Danny Kaye. That's right. That they were going to do a lot more with that. But it didn't. How did you gain the trust of everybody Rankin bass? What happened? What did you show them? Or tell them that made them believe in you so much. Well, Arthur, Rankin was an art director at ABC television. And I just called them up after talking Jack Davis Paul Coker, the two biggest mad magazine artist designed all the rank and vast shows and said, hey, there needs to be a book. I'll do it. He said send me two chapters. Yeah. So I sent them to chapters. He liked it. And then he sent me a tape of his life story. Nice it just a blind call in a cold call to him. Well, it was he got a lot of those kinds of calls up until me. And this was like in the late eighties early nineties. And when I followed through, then he knew like this guy was serious and. And then he just ran with it. And, and we became very close friends, I was accepted like one of his sons, you know. But don't you think like the differences that a lot of guys could have come along done a cut rate version of this, but you just breathe this stuff, and he recognized that India, probably right? And he also knew that I love Jack Davis hem Paul Coker in the art side of thing. And he appreciated that being an artist himself. Yeah. So we've loved the same things. So those guys Coker Davis worked for mad magazine but they also did movie posters and stuff. Right. Isn't a metal world. That's their work. Isn't it Jack Davis was probably the most prolific artist of his period. Yeah. I mean, he did time magazine covers TV guide covers. Yeah ads. Galore record album covers right Homer, and just throw like a series of. Oh, right. Right. Right. I mean he did everything. Yeah. Let's discuss this further after a quick break recalled Schmidt is here. If you want to. Where.

A "Mistake" That Adds Humanity To Your Podcasting... Maybe

"Talk about the pros and cons of when things go wrong. When you're doing an interview when you're doing something that you can't add it for NPR, which is so perfect. I think that it can add humanity. You really think about polish when you think about NPR, even if you listen to that guy, I think it adds something to the fact that we know that they're not clipping that thing together. He is that smooth on the Mike. So I think the NPR has a situation where a dog occasionally not all the time actually add something to the broadcast. Casey Kasem, you know, the Casey Kasem situation, Casey Kasem is going off mad about coming out of an upbeat number and going into a death dedication. Remember, those requests and dedications. He used to do somebody wrote in a little dog named snuggles had died they had a request and also a dedication to snuggle. But Casey Kasem is coming out of a pointer sisters song. So he went off. He went off on the production team somebody probably somebody from the production team felt belittled. Let those tapes out into the wild. They are legendary this was pre internet. These things were being passed around from radio jocks to radio jock. From tape collector tape collector, and of course, it's all over the internet. Now that's Casey about this years later. And here's what he said. He said it added to the humanity. Should I'm a real person. I make mistakes too. I get angry too. It didn't hurt me. Like, I thought that it would. So let's talk about for you. What happens when you get into a situation? Where there's a fire engine going by a dog going by will it help you in this way, the answer is maybe while something like this can help you. It can also make you look amateur or make you look like you don't care. And I think that's the biggest thing if it makes you look like you don't care about your audience. So this reason that I think you should do something if you can. But you can't if you're on somebody else's show. Don't get too caught up in it. It's not that big a deal as long as it doesn't happen. A lot dogs barking put the dog up mobile phones going off, you know, sometimes you can have fun with that. Sometimes I'll be in the music business radio studios. A foam will go off. I may people answer it we've got so funny calls that way. Sometimes it's one famous person calling another famous person, you never know. But it only happens once you don't want it to constantly interrupt every single element of the episode if they're that busy. They don't need to be in your studio with you kids spouses, interrupting that needs to be controlled if you can control it that needs to be controlled. Because again the issue. You is. You're not caring about your audience. That's the downside of this. And that's how it can come across. If it appears that you don't think that that person listening is the most important person in the room. You're not gonna win that person. Over people understand dogs. People understand fire engines, they're going to understand the occasional mistake. Hey, somebody left a cell phone on accidents. But they're not going to understand why somebody is constantly interrupting you asking whatever they're asking you when you're supposed to be spending time with the listener so wrap things up the most important thing in this situation. Ask yourself this does the listener know that I care about him. And if it happens just like it did on MPR, let it happen. He moving forward
