The Tight Race for Second in the Boston Mayoral Race

"Elections are about. Who's going to win. I know that seems obvious. But it is worth noting because we have a really interesting situation unfolding with the preliminary election for boston mayor according to two polls over the last few days it looks like this may actually be a race for second. So let's try and make sense of those polls ahead of thursday's debate which radio boston and wb. You are are co hosting with. W c the boston globe and the mccormick graduate school of policy and global studies at umass boston here to help us do that. Steve casella president of the mass inc polling group. Steve is a friend of the show and massinc polling conducted one of the polls with policy for progress new democracy coalition housing forward massachusetts and education reform now advocacy steve. Welcome back to radio boston to be here. So lots of new information in the last few days steve. You're pulling data came out. Friday than the globe suffolk university. Poll released today both have city council member. Michelle woo polling. At around thirty percent they also have this cluster of acting miracle janey an council members and ib george andrea campbell. Really tight together for second so the first question does it mean that wu has her place in this preliminary election solidly in hand. Well i think we did. Nothing's certain you know nothing solid until everything's over you know that's one thing i mean. Just a fact about municipal elections is that They can change much more quickly than say a partisan election. you know. there's no republican. There's no democrat on the ballot. There's no kind of mental shortcut. People can take to where there's only one candidate that's anywhere near my as a voter my ideological space. So i'm definitely going to choose this one. You know in municipal elections. There might be three or four candidates that you're still choosing between so you know certainly you would like to be michelle Michelle lewis campaign given the numbers that that are the way they are. But i i certainly wouldn't say you know. There's no way that anything else can happen

"I don't know he'll be back. I'm sure when we spoke before that fight. You seem to have a pretty good feeling. That john salter was going to be waiting in the wings. For your first offense and that's exactly what's happened here. You're more than okay with that idea. I know you're not a guy. Thinks of revenge for him. Beating kosovan genus. But is there like at least a small part of you. Who wants to sort of get that one back for him like a little piece just like in the back of your mind not. I really haven't thought about that. I just there's a an opponent and fighting the belts for me as hungry as as the challenger nothing more. Nothing like Casella wasn't hurting that. Fight that me He got taken down and control because he heard them and revenge. This isn't personal at all. This suggest business right. of course. it's a fiber the it wasn't a dirty fight. Anything a you mentioned it because it seems pretty clear what saulters path to victory is going to try to try to take down and control you on the map but at the same time like you said he's gonna come after you in order to do that. Which ultimately could be a very good thing for you like do you see at the same way. Like yeah at stryker versus crapload. But in order for him to implement his game plan he's going to have to come play with that lucy fire so to speak. I think also especially.

But right when you get mad at him like cut that out you realize he knows his boundaries. Look, I'm gonna put a grill in my mother on draft some bars. But you know, I'm not going to have to drop that anywhere. Underway him saying Nickens at one time. She if anybody thinks they can see him. Yeah. Two weeks later, God he gonna do this. Mccollum to me, man. Nope. He's a very complex character. No, man. He he is. He is he's a, but you know, what a love that character. Because that character, you know, talking about him being kinda hood and being a Wigger him known as boundaries. It gives us a chance to explore race relations in a different area. Gift gives us a chance explore race issues in different area, and that that is really hard to frame today. And you know, and it's a very touchy area to to talk about upsetting people, and that is cultural appropriation. And this movie manages to actually talk about cultural appropriation really bring up the question. When is it truly appropriation in win is really that. Character are that person, you know, because this the miles grew up in the hood. And that's who he is say stop acting like acting like what this is me. This is what I do. Yeah. There's a there is a there's a there's a scene in the movie, man. I thought was great is actually a scene that that that that? Came in and made me. A..

"The holiday and it said on these teenagers who were kind of focusing on like there's a, there's a holiday talent show coming up and Christmas, and and and then you know, there's ambi- apocalypse happens and you can find a trailer online, kinda get a sense of it. The one song you can hear in the trailer called like what a day to be alive, and it shows like Anna going about her walk to school, not realizing they're literally zombies and stuff behind her. It's kind of like that Shaun of the dead moment where he walks to the shop. And that that's just one beat in the movie. But it's very funny. It's like I was screaming with laughter when I saw it and the music actually really great and kind of all over the place. They have very different songs from b to beat. So like one song as a kind of throwback, you know, kinky like like Assan saucy, Marilyn Monroe type song. And then another one reminding me more like a Freddie Mercury rock out song. And there's like a punk jam, and it was so so much fun. And that's actually coming to the US I think in December as well. From Orion pictures. Yeah, it's gonna open. Thirtieth in limited release and I'm assuming if it does, well, it'll it'll keep expanding grid. Is it? The Orion pitchers is back just go. It just it's a nice spot. Yeah, yeah. And it's exciting there. They took like they reveal the poster poster for the movie at Comecon, and I feel like they're really trying to put some behind this and it's such a fun movie. And I mean, it was cool seeing for the first time it fantastic last year because I just it didn't matter if it was good or not. Right. Like I need to see the mash up that's trying to combine like four different genres essentially a needed to see it, but it was so much fun and like, you know, you can just tell that everybody is just totally game for what that movie is, and everybody totally gets it. And it's just really joyful and sunny and also gross and at times genuinely scary. So yeah, any Pakalitha it's good stuff in the apocalypse. Keep an eye out for that one. Debendra. What do you what even watching a couple of things. I finally got to see blind spotting, which is a new film, starring DVD eggs and Rafael Casella. It's kind of a companion piece. I'd say just totally to sorry to bother. Are you both of these movies are setting Oakland and both are kind of dealing with the issues of today and this movie is far less surreal right about, yeah. I'm really looking forward to talking about that movie this one concerns. You know, a guy who is on his last few days of probation, something really bad happened. You know, a couple years ago and he's just kind of dealing with the efforts or just dealing with the aftermath of that and trying to piece his life together. It feels a lot like a Spike Lee movie to me, it is really a movie about how people just live. It's funny, it's heartwarming and then at times, like, you know, violence will erupt. And I think a key point of this movie, it's not spoiling too much because Simba trailer kind of all of the marketing, but some point to be his character early in the movie witnesses, a Cup, killing somebody on the street, and he just kind of sits with it and he lives with it and the trauma that kind of just exists with him and within the movie throughout, you know. The entire Runtime when I was going into this, I thought this would be a movie about like him trying to like, go the police and try to get something done about this and notes. It's just like him living with this horrific thing that he saw while also still, you know, trying to win back the woman. He used to love and trying to have fun with his friends. It's a really interesting film. I think like spike, Lee's pray the best comparison strict by Carlos Lopez Estrada who I think has done a plenty of shorts before this is well..
