"Jour- well One of the top Ah guises baseball funny. It will be in the rotation this year. I think the first thing you notice about anthony is. He has a big arm. Which should give us three starters In von guzman and tyler beatty when he's back Who could touch the upper nineties with their fourteen. Fast walls and i think that will create some margin for error for anthony As well as gospel and beady Anthony compliments at big fastball. With two distinct breaking balls and a changeup sinker to give them five weapons to attack hitters the other thing to notice about anthony. He's traditionally a struggled to limit home runs and attack left handed hitters. I think that was evident In twenty twenty and in a a nontraditional year One of the reasons why we thought anthony with an appealing target for us was We noticed some usage patterns and stuff adjustments that we can make to him as a giant in addition to the opportunity to move him from great american ballpark in cincinnati which is an excellent hitter's park for left any hitters to oracle which has traditionally been tough on left handed hitters I think the combination of those factors. Leave us very optimistic that anthony could End up falling in that group of of sars that we mentioned earlier on the call of drew smiling kevin guzman and drew pomeranz. Who came to san francisco and tapped into another year of their potential to to have a career and the catcher curt casali was with tampa was with cincinnati. Donnie ecker worked with him in cincinnati. When you're getting coaches and his numbers really improve and he was signed to compliment buster posey even though he like buster fats from the right side. You also have chadwick trump but it casali obviously has much more experience. We're we're looking forward to adding kurt to the mix. It's funny that you asked about curt after anthony desclafani because i was actually texting with kirk. Casali asking his opinion of can't because he caught him so many times in cincinnati But kurt in his own right is a well rounded catcher he contributes in all facets the game. He's an excellent receiver game caller. He brings a patient disciplined approach to the plate and and had some impressive poolside power And night kurt is an outstanding teammate. he knows how to get the most out of out of pitchers he's an excellent evaluator of pitching and he's constantly seeking ways to get better And and i think those those makeup attributes are significant reason why we targeted and i also should know that We tapped into the vanderbilt mafia that we have building here in san francisco with You know you stransky and salman and all those guys and they know Casali very well and they..

Yes, was always talking about being in Nashville working out with my college buddy, Curt Casali, and at the time I was I didn't study the Reds catching depth chart. I didn't know who he was. But Gaz has been talking about that guy for a while. So It was like 400 son because he's he has his buddy, you know? Well, he said he was also playing. They were playing like, pick up like like baseball games. Once spring friend got shut down with a bunch of the van de guise of Antonio Campos out there. Sonny Gray was out there. He said that I think you, Sally said Yes. Was hitting bombs off a Sonny Gray left now. Stubble on that game down at the park. I would love to see that right? Some of that go down to the park. Yeah, and by the way, just we can talk about it later in the show, too. But Connor Letourneau has a great piece this morning. On Draymond Green and Steph Curry. Yeah, underrated relationship of Draymond and Steph. He does a deep dive into it and says, These guys are thick as thieves. It's always step in place, different clay or Stephanie, Isha or Stephane, Steve or whatever. It's about the the hidden bond between Draymond and Steph and like not only on but off the court to and how basically dream on is, you know he's such a, you know, session intense dude that he doesn't put up with any BS, and he just he's come to love step for. How really is. Steph loved Raymond for his his leadership in intensity, and then the numbers on the court. Steph When Dream on's on the court and Steph when Dream on's not on the court and dream on one steps on the court and dream on one steps, not other than these two grabs. Their success is absolutely linked, and there's a reason they think the reason why steps going off now is dreamin. Yeah, In all the positioning and all the vehicles. Yeah, I love it. I love that. "Holy Grail, Banks Budweiser and you, D F I'm Jim Day and my pleasure to welcome in You know him from The Cincinnati Enquirer Cincinnati dot com. Long time beat writer of the Reds, who recently announced his retirement No, John Fei, you can't retire. We brought you right back in here to the hot stove league. How you doing, my friend. I'm good. I'm good. A little. I told you before we came on the air that when something happens with the Reds, I'm ready to react to it. And I don't really have to talk to my wife about it, I suppose. And I put a couple things on Twitter. But it xylitol different, But I'm happy with what I did. Well, you still have Ah, large following on Twitter and still have your hands on the pulse of the Cincinnati Reds and baseball. Not gonna ask you about retirement. Does your what? Your weekend to it? Yeah. Four days. Great. Um, it's such an unusual time in the world, obviously, and in baseball not immune to that. We've talked about off season. This is going to be the most unprecedented off season we've seen And we say that we seem to say that every off season but this one in particular, this is real. This is a whole different dynamic. Um, are you surprised of what you're seeing? I mean, no one's doing much and it cove. It has really affected baseball, maybe more than other entities. Yeah, I think in an ordinary off season right now, the Reds would have their season ticket number pretty well dialed in so they can set their budget by that right now. They don't know. They're gonna have fans, but how many they don't know. I think a lot depends on what goes on with covert it and They've obviously made some moves to move some money around. To not offer contract to Archie Bradley and And Curt Casali that those were financial moves. So was the trade of ratio. Iglesias. Although we're talking about that a little bit. He only had one more year left. Hey, was gonna make $9 million. I think It was. They may have traded him anyway, in a normal offseason if they could get much for him, So I I e think that's a sign that there but is Nick Kroll told the writers yesterday that they're trying to move some money around so they they could make some moves. They do. They do have a big hole at shortstop s o. They have some money to spend there. I don't think by any means. Done and I don't think it's a total salary dump. I just think they're trying to get it in order so they can Fielder, there needs more so than than just bring back the same guy. Iglesias move Didn't surprise me at all. Archie Bradley. Maybe a little bit. But if they are trying to work around some funds to reallocate, um, to address him needs elsewhere of them, You know, I understand it. The rumors out there about and new cross addressed this and I give him credit for, you know, mostly you get the general manager Speak of, you know we're not shopping around Sonny Gray, which they may not might not be. Um, but he said, Listen, we talked about everyone just because we take a call on a guy. Yes, we've talked about him. That doesn't mean we're going to do anything. Um, but I was a little surprised that his name was thrown out there as a possible trade target. But I think that crawl address it very, very well. Yeah, I think with anybody, you throw the name out there that the reason that surprised me is he is a very team favorable contract. You're not gonna be able to get a picture of his caliber. To step in for the money. He's making any makes, like $10 million a year, But again, you have to listen, because if you get a controllable guy who's not even reach, he's gonna make the major league minimum, which is about 550,000 or something like that for a couple years. Yeah, you want him if if he can plug in, but they're e think it would just have to be like the perfect Storm T o Trading because if you take him and Trevor Bauer both out of the rotation, you're you're losing on an ordinary season. You're losing 400 ending. So you have to find that somewhere. Um And it's really tough to find that kind of guy that Can take Sonny Gray's innings and make less money than Sonny Gray. So I think e again. I think Jim Bone was the classic example that that he would throw everyone out there and and see if anything happened. And it usually, doesn't it. I think teams listen to offers on all kinds of guys, and it's It's always There's been internal discussions about some player. Well, does that mean two guys in the Reds front office? We're walking down the hall talking about Mike trout. I think so. I think sometimes there's that much to it. I think there's a little more to this because because we've seen the situation where they've moved money that They think they are listening with all their veteran guys because It's really hard to get the budget in control and then be able to add unless you move some substantial money and other things that crawl talked about general manager of the Reds is in which I've talked about for several years when you're a small market team. You have to be creative, and I love when that sentence came out of his mouth, and that means making hard decisions. That also means trading guys at the right time. On Lee, though, if you're developing players, and you could move younger players in and have a mix of veterans now, maybe that's where the Reds have fallen. A little short will talk about being a small market team and the constraints Sometimes that puts on you. We'll talk about all right, Who's gonna be the closer now? "Is good. He's he can do some things but you know. I think that you know the change of scenery was something that he didn't really need didn't really wanna think it was comfortable in los angeles and since they traded him You know he had trouble adjusting. Let's say in the last twenty games of the season you don't. We did not play very well. He was fifty three points. Below the average outfielder in opium. Plus you know. I feel like he. He can get it done for pretty much any team. You just have to find the in you know being in free agency s. Find the team that he wants to go to. I think that's the whole point of what he has to go to rouse. Where does he feel most comfortable You know if the if the colorado rockies don't bring in you know eddie rosario I feel like brian. Goodwin could be a good match Fuel i feel him going to maybe to an american league team you know maybe stay in the central division but in the american league central feel like he could be you know somewhat of a playmaker there. I think he spent some time in detroit. So i don't think that You know he would go back to the tigers but you know maybe You know maybe. The kansas city royals. He don't maybe the cleveland indians. Bring him in especially with You know their struggles in the outfield. And how they've been trying to. He know rid themselves of that problem. You know maybe they can hope to strike lightning in a bottle the way that the angels did With seventeen homers one hundred plus season Number five on the list is archie bradley so archie bradley was the number seven. Pick in the twenty draft No in two thousand seventeen. He was huge as a lights out reliever in going to the bullpen. But you know in the last three seasons since that season he has a three point. Five one era ray. Twenty seven only twenty seven saves the arizona diamondbacks to cincinnati on the thirty first and he only made six total appearances with the reds. You know only three seasons off of his best year in two thousand seventeen. And i remember him in. Two thousand seventeen was with the diamondbacks during the wild card game and he hit that tripled the left. Field no. That's the archie bradley that i still have in my head and you know being not so far removed from that. Maybe it was just a change of scenery thing. Nothing that was anything too crazy but you know we experience with the playoffs was like and then you know he was on a team that wasn't able to make the playoffs and he just kinda got bored and just phoned in I could see maybe the Houston astros going after him I felt the angels should really make push after archie. Bradley affiliate has something left in the tank. So maybe you can get him for something cheaper than normal. And just hope that. You're getting dylan bundy type thing where he just needs a chain of change of scenery and You know maybe. Joe man's leadership is able to get him back needs to be What's another team that. I think archie bradley could go to I would like to see him in atlanta. But i'm going to leave them out of this agassi the nationals coming in and making a big push for archie. Bradley you know. They're one year removed from the world. Series you know. They had a bunch of opt-outs last year. They're going to be able to make the push this year I feel like archie. Bradley could be a big piece in that washington nationals bullpen. And then moving onto number six we have curt casali curt casali You know he brings them up to the plate you know. We had eighteen homers and less than five hundred play periods. The plate appearances in the last three seasons in cincinnati A slow he had a slash line of to sixty three forty five and a four forty slugging percentage Casali also owns a and eight sixteen career. Ps against lefties Now i feel like the whole like lefty thing is kind of out of touch now especially with the specialists because nobody really actually goes for that and there's not a lot of lefties to begin with like no one's going to throw a lefty against curt casali one like in the bullpen game. You know when when when it turns over to the bullpen. It's not really going to be like that. So you really only gonna start versus lefthanded pitching like latino starters out of. There's a lot of left-handed stars be able to justify doing that. Just off all by herself and eighteen homers in five hundred leg a little less than five hundred plate appearances so that's about eighteen homers a year. That's not too bad Curt casali see. I could see you know. I could see him in like a like pittsburgh. Pittsburgh would be good a good place for him. You know maybe Maybe they get them in miami who knows i have no. I'm just making these things up. I think that you know he could be good. You know maybe he gets a shot and like a you know in in texas with the rangers you know. Maybe he goes to Let me get about another team team in that. I'm gone on. Maybe oakland oakland would be a good spot for him. I don't know why. But i just feel like oakland be good spot Next up number seven is hansel robe. Liz so roma's he had a pretty pretty good. You know he was going pretty well in a in anaheim with the angels You know he struggled in twenty twenty. He was claimed off in two thousand eighteen. He put up a two nine seven era in thirty seven games stretch in twenty eighteen. And then in seventy one appearances with the angels in twenty nineteen. He had a two four eight. Era but This season in eighteen games yari. Jump to ten twenty six I feel like the angels could kept them. i feel like they should have kept them You know it was reading about the guy. I don't really feel as if you know. They are unless they have some big name guy that like that. They are in talks with that. They're in the position to be giving up pitchers. So i mean with the guy who's shown that you know that i mean To if you really look at it in a hundred and eight appearances he had about a two. Let's see if we're trying to average this out. Quick math he probably about a two seven five era and one eight appearances. You're not gonna get that in your like in your system angels. I've really feel like you should have kept that. Maybe it was just a down year. You write it off and then really right into the twenty twenty one season and if he's still hasn't balanced back maybe you get rid of next year signed into a one year deal so let's hope that the angels are able to get them back For maybe something a little cheaper Number eight is danny santana. So santana you know. He played for the rangers. He was a player of the year in two thousand. Nineteen for the texas rangers You know he hit two eighty three.
