"So this is in veterans memorial coliseum technically, but did Ford was a DNC held there a Republican, what's the deal with Gerald Ford? Gerald Ford in 1974 became the first United States president to ever attend an NBA game and he did it at memorial coliseum. It was the Portland Trail Blazers. Against the buffalo braves. Okay. You won't be in the same building where Gerald Ford once watched a basketball game. Dead leg. Wow. I had no idea you had a Gerald Ford impersonation. You don't know that, you know that you don't know that reference? I don't know what you're doing. They're all hard. That was Dana Carvey doing Tom. That's my impression of Dana Carvey's impression of Tom Brokaw saying Daryl Ford on Saturday. That's a lot. It's a lot going on. Come on. Went to the Letterman show one time. Guess who the guest was? I'm gonna say it was Charles four. Now as Tom Brokaw. Okay. I broke all in the musical guest. The great Dolly Parton. There we go, not bad at all. You can't gamma is a tricky one here because Yukon was so good. Alabama, I think is the better team? I think only the line is one. One point. Can not wait to watch this game. If you can't play as like it did against Oregon, then Yukon is going to win. But I will go, I will go Bama in this spot. Alabama has the number one ranked two point percentage defense in the country right now. Now Yukon was on fire. From three point range on Thursday, we'll see if they can do that again on Friday. Just give me something really entertaining. I don't know, by the way, for Yukon. As every bit to this point lived up to his preseason biggie's player of the year moniker, really good gains from him in addition to everything else is getting around him. Tristan Newton, the east Carolina transfer, 39% from three big time Alex caravan, the caravan caravan, rolling around. Are you joining the caravan caravan GP? I'll consider it. Okay, 39%, three point shooter. He's also been good. And outer Jackson is back and he's playing. He's played three games to this point and still coming along, but having him involved is also a big time edition for Yukon. But I will take, I think this could be a really, really good game, but I'll take Bama to win and cover. I'm with you. I'm going to take Alabama as well. I've moved the crimson tied up to number ten in the top 25 and one. So I'm going to I'm going to play this game in a way that is consistent with the top 25 and one. And that means Alabama over Yukon, laying a point game three Friday 1130 p.m. eastern. Number 6 Gonzaga versus number 24

AJ Remembers SNL's 'Cowbell' Sketch
"I just listened to one of my favorite podcasts with David Spade and Dana Carvey. Love those guys. They have such a great podcast. What the hell is the name of it? Flying the wall. Flying the wall is great, and they always interview people who work on SNL. And they just bring back so many great memories. So I just heard about Jimmy Fallon and Will Ferrell and horatio sins and the other crazy guy, we're in that famous tail bell sketch. Memory Christopher Walken, we need more cowbell. You know, I put my pants on one leg at a time in the morning with the differences. I produce gold records, so they're talking about that sketch, and it was one of the first few weeks that Jimmy Fallon was on that show. And this sketch as great as it was. Remember Will Ferrell banned the cowbell? What is belly out? His shirt was short. He just didn't hear Chris guitar ratio stands. Jimmy Fallon will fell brilliant. And thalam was talking about how the stage was shaking when they did that sketch. And obviously I've been on that stage. I've done this show. I did two sketches there. Back, I don't know, 20 years ago. I'm probably everything I tell you is probably 20 years ago, but it shakes when the laughter is just so huge. And Fallon was saying, this sketch was a sketch that came on at ten to 1 a.m. or 5 to one, the most sketches that they probably don't think are going to work out so they put them at the end of the show. And you're thinking, how could anybody think this sketch not might not work out? It's brilliant. But it was 5 to one sketch. And walk and Chris walken was basically doing an imitation of himself. I would walk you out belly. He didn't talk that way. It's crazy. I'm going to hankering for more cowbell. So interest levitated the room and I was listening to the show and this morning and I loved it. 'cause these are things there's a little nugget you don't find out about unless you listen to shows like this,

I know that the later in this interview that will come up as being an important partner career but so comedy writing and then going to this comedy class with danny more kind of gave you your start.

I she worked for me as a feature as well. You know what he may have been a final. Why i don't know for sure. But i i think you will. The point was. I wanted to bring up. That's okay it's been a long time. I'm sorry to bring it up but it is so important for people and you to realize that to win that competition twice with the legacy of people that have won it previously. Like carvey and robin williams and ellen. Whoever else i mean. If i googled it you'd probably see a bunch of names you know but i still think it's where the To mention in in you should not be shy about it because that's quite an achievement now Maybe what we should do is talk about something a little more recent. And i think stronger than o'brien and severa. I don't want to step in any toes but that was my personal thinking. Did jim approach you about being his partner. Yes he did. Yes he certainly did and i wanna talk about a couple of things that you brought up their number one. Yeah jimmy and kenny were together for about eleven years. Oh yes. They had some really strong road. Experience day open for a lot of. They became very very popular on the college circuit. Remember back in the late seventies early eighties holidays were booking comedians. Right left to do concerts and being also booked on the open for major rock bands. You know right right. So so jimmy and kenny. They did a lot of that in the late seventies and early eighties. And then you're right. Can you decided to Jump out of comedy he had had enough. I think of the road and everything. And and maybe jimmy and then And thank you. Thank you and Well for all the comics that listened to your podcast they product to. They're they're they're rolling around on the floor right now and and jim approach to me and and jim really honestly approached me. He told me later he said you know. I'm the headliner right now. And if i go back to being a solo act on gonna step back and have the be a feature or an opener for a while. And i don't wanna do that but if i team up with a blind guy that may the team pretty unique and We can step right into headline so at that time i was just an opening up and you know every now and then i featured so i forget but so we really. Yeah you guys were goods but there was some marketing thought behind it Jim jim was trying to maintain his success path as a comedy duo in needed. Fill kenza veras position because you guys had already worked together. He was pretty aware of you and who you were. Because let's be honest for the podcast audience if you hadn't thought about it when you're comedy team that's actually more stressful than a marriage because you're not only sharing so much of your lives and and being blind just makes it exponentially harder but still It's it goes beyond the relationship because it's also business relationship and comedy teams. Don't historically last that long. Obviously there's a few that have done really well. "The thing part is it's fine makes you feel good the music's playing and you singing. That's one and it goes. It goes well with the comedy. I think you know. A lot of comedy variety shows would have comic and then a singer and they do tend to work well together but lester. You're one of the few professionals that pull off both comedy and singing so brilliantly bragging. When working with motown i still watch. Tv wondering watch little stevie wonder back in those days and all the temptations. And i learned. I learned from them as watch. You can watch the music and and everything like that. It made me feel made me feel real Willie i know. You're still in the room does we. Don't speak here. you're both there so did did the watching those guys kinda help train you as well as lester. Yes it's it was fun to do the fun things about singing music. Music is like Like let's see rachel was very charles. Ninetieth birthday anniversary is in september. Twenty third and it was like we did a a video a tribute to him on on his website celebrating his ninetieth birthday on that in that particular. Little thing that we did we talked about his songs and songs made you feel good. It makes you feel sad and it and it made you. You know it and that's the same kind of thing with music music and be You know put particular song can make you feel make you jump up and down and dance and another one can make the to sit down and think about what happened yesteryear. What happened that. you know. Years before music connects with people's emotions. And that's why So many people like to sing and enjoy singing. And what's interesting is that you were a very talented are very talented singer. But you are a tremendous stand comic I know lester you had some great jokes in those days. The punchline and he used to he was straight man. I was the guy that did remember you being funnier than willie. That's good will i. I had one more question for leicester. If you've got a minute leicester back back in one thousand nine hundred eighty five you me and willie work together on a fox forty tv special a one hour show and we had you and willie as the host of that show. We had some very big names. Like dave clear and dana carvey on that show but what was interesting. Lester is i let you drive my pink cadillac as part of the opening of this show. Have you done a lot of driving. That was that was first. I and last time. Well it you can see why it's my last time i got to tell you. We do have all that on tape and it was really exciting in a little scary for me as the owner leicester i gotta be honest. Have you driving my car. But i was the big car. Yeah that was. That was a big pink convertible. It was an amazing car bed. You did a great job driving it and even though it was a little little sketchy you're a little heavy on the break There was no damage. And i just want to say thank you but i did. I was able to stop though. Oh yeah oh yeah you did in fact if you remember you kind of fun forward and willie had to save you. Yeah got right in front of the club almost late. that's why we'll say It was a real honor having you and willie as emc of that show. It was our first of three tv shows. We did too short series. One for abc nbc. But it was the fox one hour special having you is the professional. Mc really added some validity in in style in class to that first production. So thank you. That was a fun night. You don't we really like that club because this idea you know. The club was downstate. Well it's sort of hard to explain but it's down. It was downstairs basement. Level rate shows at the shows. People would go upstairs. We had a little magic stuff going on right and people go up there after the shows when we would hang out a also and But place to be. I

Houston Matters
Dr. Umair Shah Reflects On Time As Houston's Harris County Health Authority, Ahead Of New Washington State Role
"Harris county public health executive director. Dr shawn ounce tuesday. He's leaving the department. He's led since twenty thirteen to become washington state's new secretary of health. He joins us now. Dr shock congrats on the new gig. Welcome back to the show. Crag it's as you can imagine but Thanks for having me and thanks for the congratulations. Why have you decided to take on this new challenge in the state of washington. Well it's You know let me. Let me just say Again with mentioned about the sweet piece is that there's just so much that we have accomplished here and and so many incredible incredible staff members Department leadership and and just across the community cross county government but across the community. That have just done. Just such an amazing job It is really hard to leave. But i will tell you that what you know it. Opportunities are when they come before you and i was asked by governor ins lease Administration to join as the secretary of health. And it's an incredible privilege and honor to be asked for that And certainly i'm hopeful to be able to take that experience from here and what i've learned and been able to do here in harris county to state level and some excited about that. Would you characterize the challenges that washington state is facing as roughly the same as what we're facing here when it comes to the pandemic. Oh craig here's the thing so it it. We're all facing the same way. So i in fact i got this question yesterday from a reporter in in seattle and it was a very Very much a question. That i thought was interesting and it was about well. You know the state is big and it's diverse and you know it's got red and blue areas and it's got urban areas and it's got suburban areas and scott rural areas and not. Everybody has agreed on how we should fight the pandemic So what what are your thoughts about coming into that. And i thought that kind of sounds like harris county So you know it's it's seven point six million people it's it's larger than obviously harris county and in population and certainly size. But i will tell you that it. It is also true that throughout this pandemic what we are facing here in our community is similar to what we're facing across texas across the country and across the globe now everything is manifesting differently. So fortunately we although we've been seeing increases and yes. These are concerning trends here within our region. We're not seeing that same level that you've seen in el paso or other parts of texas other parts of the country now again we can't let our our eyes off the the the ball here because very quickly as you talked over the month things can change and when they change. They changed quickly. And so we've got to do everything we can to prevent it from happening in the first place. And that's why we've got a strategic opportunity right before the holidays to get things Right and for community to heed the call to to really change the behaviors that were having over the holidays. And that's going to really drive. You know what's going to happen for us in the next chapter for you know for our community. What's next for harris county health leadership. Well you know. Obviously county government is going to make a decision and You know. I'm leaving an incredibly strong Leadership team behind In fact you can see it on twitter. I tweeted it out recently and it's strong. It's experienced its diverse Dedicated passionate and that's what community wants from its public health leadership and so. I'm just incredibly proud of that team. Now it's never about the me. It's always about the we when when we do activities or we take on activities and so craig what i would say is that while i may be not here and cheering this community on from a distance that work continues and that team continues and they are here and they're ready but ultimately it's going to be county government and commissioner's court. Who's going to decide what they're going to do after i leave my last day. Here's december eighteenth What they're going to do after that in the interim period and certainly beyond that But i will tell you that we've got a great team and i'm hopeful that the community remembers the incredible work that we've done you know local health department of the year National accreditation Microsoft research Picking us as the only community in the country. The only health department the country for its project premonition We've you know we were ranked number two recently and peer rankings by seven hundred and forty local health departments across the country for who. They look to initiatives. There's a lot of incredible work that we've done and craig one that i know you're I've talked about this before. Related to animals When i started at the at the department as the director are leave alive rate animals. That left our shelter. Alive was was about fifteen percent. This is twenty twelve twenty thirteen. It is now ninety eight percent. We have actually changed the narrative. These are things that we have to be proud of as a community and as a as the government. I just really want to just say that. We can't do it alone. In this pandemic has shown this you know obviously harvey and katrina rita i e carvey all these hurricanes and tropical storms but also you know h one n one ebola zico now covid nineteen. We have a lot of work that continues. There's never a good time to leave. But i'm very proud of our department and our team and i'm excited about the fact that they're going to continue that that work into the future. What parting advice. Can you offer to huston. Ian the department and its initiatives not just about cove in the current surge in cases about the region's health and general. Well a two things. One is that look cova. Nineteen is a. It's a crisis it's pandemic it is. Let's not let's not let our focus off of that so What i've been calling twenty twentieth the first half of football game. It's the first half the holidays coming up here. We're going to be at halftime. Usually people take a charge Recharge during halftime they changed strategy. They think about what's up ahead. We know twenty twenty one's gonna be vaccines vaccines vaccines and certainly We've got to be readying ourselves for the second half so halftime so critical. So if you don't have to have thanksgiving holidays with a lot of people don't and fact Make him very small holidays. a few people your social bubble your immediate people in your family Don't travel do those kinds of things if you're gonna do those things. Please look at our website for safety precautions. That's the one thing koba. Nineteen craig the second thing. Let's remember the value proposition of of true health. Not just health care delivery about prevention about the investment in public health systems. The reason that we have got into some of this mess across the country is we have not appreciated the value of public health and prevention. And so we wait for people to get sick and then we try to do things. We wait for people to get injured and we try to do things. Let's invest upfront. And if we do that in county and city and and even state and federal governments we invest truly unhealth then we can have a healthier community. Dr rumor shaw's the soon to be departing executive director of harris county public health. Doctor shaw thanks very much. Thank you craig. It's been an honor to be with the all. These
