Give that a listen as well couple of things that we're going to do here today. We're going to play some audio for you from the post game on sunday. We'll hear from head coach. Joe judge we will also hear from wide receiver kick returner special team gunnar and now defensive. Back matt cole. After he played basically both sides of the ball played on all three groups on sunday. Kohl's a guy who's been impressive In his couple of weeks with the giants after being waived by the new york jets. So we'll hear from him as well. We will also look at the giants week ahead as they end their preseason this week finishing that up with a game against the new england patriots on sunday. Evening at metlife stadium all right just a few things here quickly guys. That were impressive yesterday. In addition to coal on the offensive side of the ball was really impressed by devante booker. Thought that for the first time booker really showed why the giants were in such a rush to to sign him thought that that the wide receiver competition really didn't get a whole lot of clarity on on sunday. Coal impressed in his variety of roles. David sills had another nice day. Cj board continues to be a critical special teams player for the giants. John ross continues to be injured so really interesting how the giants are going to shape. The wide receiver backups. How many wide receivers. They're actually going to keep on. The roster was actually impressed by much of the work of the backup offensive. Line was good to see veteran. Backup center jonathan harrison. Play the entire game after missing a lot of time this camp with an undisclosed injury. Kenny wiggins and and and ted larsen are both veteran. backed up. guards don't know if either of those guys will make the roster to be honest with you but they are both players. Who know what they're doing you know larson's a guy who was making his his preseason debut for the giants didn't grade tremendously well when it came to pro football focus but he's a guy who can both guards can play center offers. That kind of versatility knows what he's doing could be the kind of player that you want as a as a backup in an emergency situation so all in all thought that the offensive line played pretty. Well feel a little bit better about the about the depth. After watching sunday's game still think the giants will be looking on the waiver wire to to to perhaps upgrade that as we get closer to week one against the denver broncos but but thought that it was an encouraging performance by some of the the backup offensive lineman on the defensive side of the ball really impressed by the pass rush work of oceans immunise. Not so much. The edge setting against the run. That's an area where x has always seemed to struggle in that continues. Carter coughlan on the inside. Linebacker spot played really well. Couple of guys that got mentioned after the game by coach. Joe judge were defensive. Tackle david moa and linebacker. Trent harris not sure either of those guys can make the roster but they were both mentioned by joe. Judge also worth noting that ian rapoport. Nfl insiders reporting that some nfl teams have inquired with the giants about place. Kicker ryan santoso. Who isn't going to beat out graham gano but if he could bring the giants let's say a sixth seventh round draft pick in the upcoming draft. That might be worth considering for the giants. So we'll see what happens with santos though as it works out. The giants are heading to new england this week. Which happens to be a place kicker. Needy team so we'll see if anything develops there all right. Let's do this. Let's get right to the audio from joe judge. We're going to hear from joe judge. We're going to hear from matt cole. I will hear from judge talking about coal and talking about the the week that the giants spent working with the browns. Now probably not competed. He's guy scott here. Special teams offense or defense ages says yes sir. A hundred percent you know. We're sitting there looking at the amount of guys you're gonna play saying we a debt. Someone who's going to be an issue in the hot day with a lot of snaps and you always turn out. Say let's back lot lot on punt returner. Play has goner to see what he's got. You know you asked me. I've had experience doing for sears. And training camp and guys that have stuck around wanting impressed us. Was you know. He didn't blink out there. Get the ball through a couple of times. Nice tackle stopped short. They're enforcing feel so you know. Obviously hells a little bit noodle and he got a crash course last defense and some meetings but probably went up. Think yeah i think our entire roster we great quality working. it's quality opponent of the practice of jacksonian. We need to come out here. High-intensity high volume bill nor conditioning. Our fundamentals competitive rate about seen young guys play in competitive situation the entire game and she didn't really played for sixty minutes. That gives you a really good extended view these players not only early or in some small glimpses but extended how they make adjustments in games. Heather respond different situations for minute for the defense to minute. For the offense you can see a lot of players. Elevate their game this entire week and yesterday it's definitely a lot of push on a roster at different positions. You a lot.

"He shows consistency and i would say some level of just minor improvement on a week to week basis. He's probably got a pretty good chance of making this roster because he's the guy who bust his ass he's probably not going to be good enough to start or even receive enough snaps to have much of an impact in this giants defense. But as long as you can show that if a situation where blake martinez goes down. And they need him to step in or somebody else goes down and they need him to step in and he can be really really good on special teams. He's gonna make this roster this performance a thing is a positive sign in the right direction for a guy like carter coughlan. Yeah yeah after the game. In his post-game thoughts. Ed suggested that carpet fat coughlin could be pushing. Take crowder for the starting job next to blake blake martinez and i honestly could see that. Especially if he keeps improving at the rate we have seen if he is able to build off of this first. Preseason game and continue to take steps going forward. I actually could see him winning a starting job now he might not be an every down player but if he keeps playing smart processing information while he moves well in space and he does have that pass rush of billy from his time as an edge. You know in college. That could be an intriguing piece. For patrick graham especially the way he likes to call defense since call these blitzes and scheming pressures you're ultimately what's going to make you more of an asset to a team and increase. Your chances of being able to make is being able to do multiple things. That background has an edge. Rusher is going to help him. They're not going to ask them to rush the passer in really any instance during the regular season but the fact that he can do it. If in a pinch you're down a guy on a short week and you don't have time to bring somebody up just having someone who can play. Multiple spots is really good. And he's played in this defense outside linebacker now. He's playing inside linebacker so he has familiarity at multiple positions. That is going to be really really key for a guy like carter coffin. I did he is going to be an increased chance. After what we saw from this one performance. We can really take away some positives for coughing and i would be super shocked. If he's not on this team. Come the start of the season. The one other thing to it just want hit on chris. We talked about in the post game stream areas williams continues to exceed my expectations. I think that that's super positive what we saw from him. He has the fumble recovery. He leads the team in tackles. He's not really plus athlete. He's not really a guy that is going to be super dynamic. He's probably not going to be a starter but he's really showing like hey. I was drafted for a reason. You gotta keep me around. I'm going to be a a key. Backup player in a really hard working special. Teamer that make sense to me now. Why they brought them on. I did get a little flack for for questioning that draft pick selection because it just didn't make any sense to me and as i always say i walk is to prove me wrong. I really like it when guys proved me wrong. Leonard williams has done it so far and here we are. Again with another williams dairies williams. Yeah this first game. I think it's a good starting point for him. He's got things he's got to tighten up I saw a few of his tackles. Were you know he was being targeted in coverage any touch to guy down but he was at least in good position. And that's a good starting point for him. That's how he wound up with that. He was in good position. That's how he wound up with that fumble recovery know. He didn't cause the fumble but he was right there when the ball came loose and he was able to return. I believe nineteen yards. So if he's able to maybe tighten up his coverage a little bit. Keep being in good position and keep busting his butt on special teams. I think that's a pretty solid path to the final roster for certainly going to help him maybe establish away onto this roster and to stick around. It's not a guarantee if you're a late round draft pick to make the team so having a hell of a first performance when the amount of snaps you're going to get through. The preseason are just gradually going to diminish. he's going to prove himself as a very talented guy or not talented but hard working guy rather that that deserves to remain with this giants team in twenty twenty one folks. That's gonna be it for us on today's episode. We're going to be coming your way with a preview of the giants next game against the cleveland. Browns second preseason game hopefully see a little bit more from the starters conceal a little bit more from this roster will probably have time.

"Defensively the giants played pretty well considering the output from the jets offense. They had a number of different quarterbacks. They didn't really have a lot of big name players that were really in the rotation understandably because of frankly how weak this roster is and. how young is denzil. Mims had a pretty good game against the defense that one play where he carried like ten guys. So that's a positive sign for the jets but defensively started to see some early flashes from the young guys and you pointed out immediately as social already here in our notes that he looked very very good when flashing some of the things that he's capable of as a defender and i think that that's going to be an indication of potentially he's used during the twenty twenty one season. Yeah i'll say i. I like the fact that the giants used him on both sides of the defense left left engine right edge. I liked rice off from him with his first step. He generally played pretty good leverage and when he was able to get the get his hands on the blocker i he was generally successful like the one that tackle for a loss he had against mci. Becton that's really what he did. Well he got there quickly he engaged and was able to shed the block really before beckton was ready to lock in the block and he also had another good play like that on the rights. I think it was matched up on morgan moses. A i would have to go back and check again again. But then i have to admit there were other plays where you didn't have quite as good leverage on. Maybe he didn't get his hands on the blocker. I when that happened. He did struggle There was one running play where he was he had to set the edge against becton and beckton was basically able to discard him. Push him way out of the play with one hand. That was a bit ugly. There was another one where he kind of got bodied by a pair of tight ends. I one engaged him stood him up. Second one came over with a double team and knocked him to the ground. Knocked him out of the play so i i'd like to see him be a little bit more consistent with his leverage with his technique. But that's something we knew about coming in. Yeah he isn't a terribly experienced at only two years at georgia and the other thing i saw which i liked was a lot of man coverage from the giants secondary yet a coverage in and of itself wasn't particularly great For the most part zach wilson was able to move the ball pretty much at will early on the game. But just you know we wanted to see the general shape of the offensive and defensive schemes. And i liked that. The giants were not afraid to man. Their corners up end really used to try to take receivers out of the game yet the fact that they didn't have bradberry in a adobe jackson on the field that changed the outcome. But i think that does promise. Good things when those guys do get on the field in terms of things that we didn't really like i. I like that you bring up here. The inconsistencies that we saw with tackling. And i mentioned that one play against teams. That was when the backups. Were in the game but there. There were some instances where some chunk yardage was able to be picked up because of some missed tackle so some inconsistencies there we. We didn't really get to see many defensive. Starters was really just young guys at backups. That were playing in this game. But you would like to see a little bit more effort in tackling and they were weak on third down. When zack wilson was in the game they did a really good job of stopping the run on the first two downs. And then zach. Wilson was able to complete are relatively easy pass to pick up a first down on what was like third in medium and third and long on some of those drives. You'd like to see a little bit more consistency and consistency in my eyes. On those third down plays the giants are probably going to do a lot better than what we saw in this game on third down. Because they're going to have their full arsenal of starters but just from the mix of early in the game of the starters in the backups. That was one of the weaker points remains. Just the the tackling to me is just that. That's something they have to tighten up and it was something that happened throughout the game from the from the first drive of the game all the way through the almost seven minute long. Four minute drill at the end of the game where the giants would have guys in position to make tackles and they just kind of gopher armed tackles or just kind of slide off of the ball carrier you brought up the dental mims play where he is a big athletic powerful receiver but he's still receiver. And you don't wanna see a wide receiver trucking your entire defense. That's just that is not going to go over. Well you know when the coaches in team are watching tapes the net the next day. There's gonna be a lotta guys just kinda maybe hiding their faces a little bit on that play. So that's something i'd really like. The giants coaches get tightened up and really taking care of hopefully before the browns game but certainly before the regular season and then just early on i would have liked to seed the defensive front a little bit more stout against the giant. I'm sorry against the jet. Starting off offensive line now yes. We didn't see letter williams. We didn't see dexter lawrence. We didn't see blake martinez but bj hill. Danny sheldon austin johnson. Reggie ragland a crowder. These guys are definitely going to be seen a lot of snaps for the giants this year and i would have liked to have seen them locked down the run and get more penetration early on in the game against the jet starters. Yeah they could have been a little bit better early on against the starters. And i think once we saw a little bit more rotation from both teams and towards the backups. That was when we started to see some more lockdown efforts. They looked pretty good against the run as we talked about on the stream there was some really really good penetration and that highlights the one key thing from the backups that we saw. I think that we've established that. They have not like elite depth but quality depth at linebacker. 'em defensive line and what i'm referencing are the guys like bj. Hill danny sheldon and austin. Johnson were in their early. But some of these other backups. That were in the game later on. I thought they did a pretty good job and the other thing is well that we talked about in commended. One specific guy for carter coughlan who was playing inside linebacker. He is really exceeded expectations. Joe judge spoke very highly of him. He's just a guy that's excited to be out there..

"Are we going to see you. Know some splash plays from from zizou jewelry. Are we going to see anything from carter coughlin. How much is lorenzo. Carter going to do. I mean he. He sat out friday's practice. Joe judge hinted that there is an injury of some sort. didn't tell us what what that entails. Any probably isn't going to tell us either. So we'll see if carter does much of anything see if carter coughlan ken. can impress. See what What i he. Oh denic bo brings to the table. It'd be interesting to see you know which edge rushers also another competition to to keep an eye on is of course the competition for backup wide receiver spots john. Ross dante pettis. Cj board austin mac. The newly acquired damian willis's in that competition now David sills kid who was really really impressive. A year ago. Who had a chance to talk to A few days ago Please make sure you check out the feature that i did on sills at biglou dot com. If you haven't done so already sills is also a guy in that competition and appears to be off to a good start in training camp so and again you know once we get to pads once we get to really competitive situations. That's when we start to get a look at players who are standing out players who are falling behind the sort of stock up stock down kind of things that we really haven't been able to do or look at thus far in camp. This week is also going to be interesting. Because in addition to matt pert. Who's back we should start to see the return of some of the injured guys. Some of the guys that have been on the coverted list could area's. Tony has been off the cova list for a few days. But we really haven't seen him on. The field would expect to see tony. The giants first round. Pick get some reps at least an individual drills early this week and get back on the field. Get into some team periods as the week goes along as he has the giants. Try to find a way to fit tony into into their twenty twenty one offense the young man for a variety of reasons between shoe issues and not being present at voluntary. Ota's as and and leaving practice early during minicamp. He's already missed a ton of reps early in the season. Tony needs to get on the field. He needs to stay on. the field. needs to get comfortable you as an nfl player. Get comfortable in this offense build a rapport with daniel jones so that he can become a useful part of the twenty twenty one giants offense. There are obviously gadget plays that the giants can run for tony. You know the quick screens. The jets sweeps all that kind of stuff but it would be nice if he could do more than that. In addition to You know part return kickoff return if the giants choose to use him there as well but it. It'll be nice to see tony back out on the field this week so so hopefully. Hopefully that happens and You know we get some of the other injured guys back soon as well. It would be nice to see ocean's immunised get out on the field fairly soon. Don't know if for when that might happen. don't know what might happen. Also in terms of some of the roster moves. we haven't heard yet You know the giants have added several players Looney being one willis being another veteran linebacker. Todd davis perhaps the addition of running. Back alfred morris coming as well we haven't necessarily heard what what corresponding moves. The giants are going to make. I would assume that we will hear most of those on You know throughout the day on monday and we'll keep you guys up to date the best we can going forward with with those moves as we will with with anything and everything to do with the giants and training camp also guys wanted to talk a little bit about About the giants offense. We know how bad the offense was a year ago. Thirty first in the league in points scored nowhere close to good enough to be a representative. Nfl caliber playoff team. We know how much emphasis the giants put on on upgrading. That offense kenny golladay. Kid area's tony kyle. Rudolph bringing in devante booker as a backup running back on adding john. Ross doing you know. Re revamping the offensive coaching staff especially around the offensive line. So a lot has been done in there was a lot of There was a lot of consternation. I guess is the right word on friday when the offense struggled against the defense in an eleven on eleven period. And listen you know. It wasn't great the balls on the ground too much daniel jones through a bad ball over the head of evan. Ingram that gut intercepted by logan ryan. He and of course it's okay god. He threw another interception toward anger. I'm here we go again with that nonsense which happened way too much last year but look the giants defense. The secondary is very very good. It's very talented. Most of those guys already have a rapport. Most of those guys have played together even newcomer. dorie jackson. You know has played a lot with logan ryan so he knows so so. There's some chemistry already there. The secondary is pretty well established. It's one of the best secondaries in the league. The giants are really just putting the pieces of this offense together. They're really just building the timing building chemistry in building the things necessary. You know to to run a competent quality passing attack and on friday. It didn't look great. You know obviously i was. There didn't look great. it looked sloppy. The as i said the ball was on the ground. Too much there weren't enough completions. The defense dominated the action on friday. But but i'm not gonna flip out about that. It was one practice. It was the first competitive practice of training camp. I really competitive eleven on eleven period and and and it didn't go great for the offense but it's you know it's so it's a starting point look at it that way We'll hope that things get better. Hopefully this week will see some signs of improvement but really the idea for me is to see a little bit of improvement. Some steady improvement in the timing. And how the offense you know in in the timing in the the chemistry with daniel jones in the wide receivers. I'm looking at those joint practices coming up against the browns and the patriots in a couple of week weeks and by then. I really want to see some progress. I don't wanna see the giants..

"Season. I am joe. Deleon joined by chris. Bond today at folks if you happen to miss any of those other position groups that we did. We've done the entire offense. We also did the interior defensive. Lineman go check those out especially hit that. Subscribe button if you enjoy listening. Leave us a five star review today. We're gonna talk about ed rushers. We're going to talk about the pass rush group which by a lot of outlets considered to be one of the the worst in the nfl which justifiably makes sense considering. This group is not a very productive one. Scruple did not have a ton of production last year. We spent a lot of time talking about the interior defensive lineman and how they were really the big cause for pressures and the productive squad forgetting sacks and all of those pass rushing metrics instead the edge rushers had a bit of a step back in the role that they played but it seems like right. Now chris that this this group has a lot to prove heading into two thousand twenty one yet it really does and i think a big part of it is the fact that the giants to most established pass. Rushers are both coming of injuries and we don't really know what to expect of them. That is lorenzo carter. Who was coming off. A torn achilles and oceans jimenez who is coming off of a shoulder. injury Those two injuries basically ended their respective seasons last year. But the giants have brought in a lot of reinforcements they spent their second round. Pick on Who expect to see quite a bit of this year than they got. Ellison smith in the fourth round which was early for for a lot of projections. But he's a player. We both really like than i brought in ryan anderson formerly of washington if avio ningbo formerly of the minnesota vikings so they have a lot to prove but they've got a lot more bodies at the position than they had last year. You have the names and the faces that have been brought in for this edge. Group does give it a little bit of juice. And i think all of the guys in this group do fit that storyline heading in for the edge. Rushers of everybody's here to prove themselves. This is guys like ryan anderson and effendi mbo both of them are players that have had opportunities to maybe flash some good things but not really the ability to step into highly productive roles and dominate. And i think now being a part of the giants edge group because there's a lot less faces in it. There's a lot less noticeable notable guys that have big names and establish themselves. Everyone is going to get a chance to really prove what they're capable of. Which seems to be the path for a lot of guys in this giants defense under patrick graham guys. That needed a chance to really prove themselves. Patrick graham utilizes their skills properly and then they have the opportunity to play really really well so hopefully we do get that from this group but there still are some major question marks that do need to be answered especially who we think. Are the starters right now. So i want to start this by saying chris. It seems like lorenzo. Carter is going to be playing more of an off ball linebacker role as the will backer in this group. I'm sure they'll still use them to pass rush but right now. There's really not a a will backer in this lineup. And it seems like it makes the most sense. Our lads has him listed as the starting will behind him as devante downs. And then i believe tj brunson. We're gonna talk about the linebacker stuff. But i feel as though for a guy who's coming off of an achilles injury with some new faces brought in a guy drafted to play that sam role. I think more likely than not. Lorenzo carter is probably going to be playing a little bit. More off the line of scrimmage. But they'll still definitely use him in the creative ways that patrick graham lakes uses linebackers. Yeah just looking at lorenzo carter from a physical athletic tool standpoint. It's easy to see why the giants have been trying so hard to make him an edge rusher but that's never been the guy he was you know. He wasn't a pass rusher at georgia. He was really more of a defensive swiss army knife. And that's how he's been used the best by the giants defense you. He's we've oh said. He is really at his best playing in space running with offensive players. But he does have that athletism athleticism and just burst and bend to be a threat of blitzer. And the occasional pass rusher so i think he will have assuming he is healthy because as we already mentioned he's coming off in an achilles injury and those are always tricky. We don't know just where he is at in his recovery. How much of his athleticism he has retained. How much of that explosiveness. And also i think just ankle mobility which is so important for a pass rusher but assuming he is the athlete we remember. I think he's going to play a really wide ranging role in this defense Plane space play downhill other edge position. Though i i think we can pretty much pencil. Oj laurean starter. But the other edge position is going be ryan anderson or is it going to be a ningbo because those two guys. I think have pretty similar profiles as almost journeyman veterans. Guys who are looking for a chance to really ignite their careers. Yeah tha- that's where. I think the debate really comes into play. But the one thing with patrick graham i i think you can't necessarily pencil of a certain guy in as a starter especially off the edge and we were talking about this a little bit with the interior defensive lineman where it's going to be a ton of different heads that are worked in and out so it's not necessarily going to be two to three guys that are the same players every single time. Same thing with the edge players. It's going to be based on front. It's going to be based on formation. What they're trying to do. We saw a platoon style rotation last year where there were a bunch of different guys given the opportunities to chase after the passer like carter. Coughlan was able to get on the field in russia. A little bit cam brown was able to rush a little bit. We're going to talk about them. But i think the better question instead of saying projected starters. It's almost who's just going to get the most snaps to rush the passer oziel arias gonna probably the most opportunities if i were to.

"Podcast talking with patricia. Traina as we look ahead to this week's new york giants mandatory minicamp patty. Let's let's spend a minute talking about the rookie class. Just a little bit. Joe judge he used a dave gettleman word the other day he talked about pups growing up when he started talking about rookies and it made me chuckle. Because it's such a gentleman kind of a kind of a phrase but but but one guy that that we really haven't seen or haven't heard a whole lot about his is tonia disappoint the first round pick. Who's off to kind of kind of curious. start it. you know through rookie minicamp and through the as that. He really didn't participate. In what are you. What are you hoping to see from from tony over the over the next few days. I thought that i gotta tell you. What would joe judge said that i just. I don't know why. But i went on youtube and i just started watching little puppy videos because they just make. There's such a patty thing. Oh my god well. I mean come on. I have a dog and she even though she's seventeen. She's still my puppy. So i just had to do that. I had to throw that in there. Yes so darius tony i. I'd like to think that the issue there was the contract. Because you look at guys who you know. God forbid they don't have a ashes let me back up a little bit here All these players when they come in the rookies they signed. I don't know if it's called a waiver. What exactly the correct terminology is. But it's an agreement with the club that it god forbid they do suffer some kind of season ending injury. Even though they don't have a contract they will still get paid as though they would have gotten paid if they had a contract. So that's that's first thing. I want to mention there. That said you wonder now. If if you're going to put myself in the place of of Tony's agent you wonder if they held him out of the ota's because usually with the rookie deals it comes down to what percentage of the contract it's guaranteed. That's usually what the holdup is. Because we know that the money is slotted. You know it's not like you know. The team's only offering twenty million over four years in a player twenty five. That's not how it works. It's the guaranteed money. So even though the giants prude with you know kyle rudolph have didn't screw him. After you know that that foot issue popped up. They honored their word to him and they didn't alter the contract. Still if you're the the agent of canaries tony. You're like okay. you know what i know. I'm going to get the money. That's come that student me. But am i going to necessarily to get the guaranteed money that i want so i just wondering this is just me spit ball and here. I don't know this for a fact but this is what makes sense to me. I wonder if that's why he wasn't on the field until that contract was signed. And if you remember the timing the giants didn't announce that contract is being signed until after friday's oh ta. Now that said why was it. Signed in the morning was because you know the kid didn't want to work out. I don't know that to be exact. I'm just against ball and here. I just found the timing to be interesting. The contract is signed. He's gonna presumably be out there you know if he's not working out for whatever reason if he's off on the side then we know there's something more going on and injury or you know maybe something's going on where the coaches don't feel comfortable putting him out there but i want to see him out there and i i would think he's going to be out there but that's definitely something to keep an eye on absolutely patty. I need to see him out there. Just to Just to feel more comfortable and and just to to ease my mind a little bit in terms of of what's going on with with the young man. I'll tell you the other two players rookie wise. That i'm really looking forward to watching. Are the two young pass rushers. z's oh delory and ellison smith and again you can't you you can't tell everything about players from from a mandatory minicamp but you should be able to see how guys move and we should be able to see some burst off the edge and and we may be able to get a little hint of an idea as to as to how much impact you know. These two young guys might be able to make are you. Are you as excited to see these two guys as i am. Oh absolutely i mean the pass rush last year. Surprisingly wasn't that bad. I thought it would be a lot worse than what it was. And they finished in the top twelve. I think they were twelve role and sacks if i'm not mistaken and that was without a blue goose pass rusher that was with injuries to lorenzo. Carter oshane zimmerman s cuyler mackerel when he was here so that was pretty impressive. Now that said it can all be leonard williams. I think leonard williams yo. He had a career year last year. His best sack Production that he's had in his career you don't think teams are going to go back and say okay. Let's figure out how we can slow this guy down so they figure out how to slow him down now. You need somebody else to step up. And who's that guy going to be. So i absolutely am interested in seeing how some of these young kids fair out putting another position that i'm interested in and one thing that people need to realize is they think they see that it's summertime and training camp is six weeks away all of that but one hint that you do get from a mandatory minicamp like this is easy what the giants are thinking in terms of who they think is going to be there guy at a position like we talked about mad paired at right tackle and one of the positions that i'm curious about is the inside linebacker spot next to blake martinez. And i know i mean. I think that's a spot where that spot may not get a ton of snaps with all the defensive backs that the giants have. But you've got take crowder you've got reggie ragland in near you've got carter. Coughlan who the giants are are moving inside to that spot. I'm just a little bit curious to see to see who gets the snap next next to blake martinez your any. You have any thoughts on on that particular competition. Yeah you know. I actually wrote something about this yesterday. I wonder if maybe you're gonna you know you mentioned the defensive backs and how the giants are probably going to go with more of an nickle slash big nickle package. You know one guy who. I wondered if if maybe we start seeing in play that pseudo linebacker role is rookie aaron robinson. Because you look at what he did in college. Okay did a lotta slot work. And you've got darnay..

"Welcome back to the FANTASIA. Brienne here until one o'clock vikings classic time at one it's the NFC divisional round game from two thousand nine. The Brett Farve era one of the last great games far played for the Vikings. I was there for it. I remember a wells. A tremendous vikings victory as they advanced to the NFC championship game against the saints. Share some memories about that maybe towards the end of the show but the on the wedding clinic in cataract hotline is my good Buddy Ryan Burns from gopher illustrated dot com. Follow Him Ryan Burns M on twitter. Here is my tweet burns. E Yesterday fifteen hours ago went back to the archives looked for it gopher fans discovering that the draft can be fun day to follow the program as well as following recruiting news that we've learned the last couple of weeks that their times outside of the actual football season more. It's Kinda cool to be a fan of a specific program and it was a record setting day or record-setting weekend for for football. Yeah how about that? Minnesota gets traffic's for the first time since nineteen ninety the most in the modern era is back in nineteen ninety. I believe there were twelve rounds so you have five guys drafted and as you currently look at twenty twenty one recruiting rankings. Today Minnesota has the number five class in the entire country. So it's been quite an April here for this Gopher Football Program. Let's start with the highest draft. Pick Antoine winfield junior going back to Tampa. It's amazing actually. I was I was always hoping especially after A. Tom Brady decided to go to Tampa that? The Vikings played on there this year. You were with me down in Tampa. We had a hell of a time down there. It's a lovely place to visit. I'd love it. If it was in December we could go down there and watch the game not feel like I almost have to Tyler Johnson and Antoine. Winfield junior being there. But we're you surprised. There was some steam late in the week. That winfield might even sneak into the first round. I even thought the Vikings might be trading down to draft him at thirty one and certainly. I thought he was going to early. Second he had a little bit of a slide but also one of the great family moments on a Friday night when he got drafted to Tampa Bay. What did you make about his placement there? Yeah I thought he had late steam as well at least from the people I had talked to. I know that there was a lot of talk on Wednesday and Thursday morning that he could get up there but ultimately that didn't end up happening but I think for Winfield the Nice thing about it is. He's going to be asked to play safety. He's going to be asked to start. And what appears to be a pretty good team a team that's going to have super bowl aspirations with Tom. Brady signing down there and you get the slot him in the free safety position and I think it's going to be a fantastic opportunity for him again. His father for my money. The greatest tackling corners. I've seen in my lifetime. Antoine winfield finally puts together a full thirteen game season. And He. Can you see what kind of player he can be can be just so versatile and that three four scheme down there where yeah he can play safety but he also could come down to the box and make plays and even what Tyler Johnson going in the fifth round there? Yes they have a couple of guys that. I'm sure if you have a fantasy football team you know and Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. But I'm not sure that something called Scotty Miller or jaded mickens is going to potentially make me think that tyler. Johnston can't earn third or fourth wide receiver role and the potentially be catching touchdowns from Tom. Brady well I'm going on tomorrow. We have some good friends in the company a wd in Tampa the patent. Aaron show some really good news. We've met over the years and they were helpful when we were down in Tampa for the outback as well but obviously after they drafted winfield. I was probably I knew I'd probably get a call from but when tyler went there as well I knew I was going to hear from them. So I'm going on with them tomorrow and I'M GONNA say about Winfield with them is the only thing I can think of for. Why maybe that late steam on Winfield didn't pay off as people? I think fairly are still worried. A little bit about the injury history. Many missed basically two full seasons more or less Your Maryland was the the fly in the ointment for him and probably his size. A little bit right. I mean he's not the prototypical size for an NFL safety but he can do a lot of things so that to me is why if he was going to be a first rounder. It probably would have been maybe some injury stuff in as well as the size in terms of instincts performance football intellect. I don't know if there's a safety out there that's better absolutely. Those are the two things that was brought up to me. Was You know his size? He's not the biggest guy in the world. I think he came in at five ten. But how much does that size really matter when I think he plays so much bigger than that when you see him come down in the box and make plays or you've seen him run down the field with bigger receiver. The Penn state came being a prime example of that and go up high point of all. Come Down with it and I think Black said it. Well during this past week where he can hit like a linebacker he covers like safety and he can his ball skills like a wide receiver. And so that's where yes you look at the injury history. He did have struggles in his Minnesota career staying on the field but I just kind of tricky those to some freak injuries where against Maryland. You mentioned the fly in the Ointment Treatment. He not contact knee. Injury takes him out then he also has a non contact foot injury that takes them. I mean those are two things. It's not like it's perennially a strained quad or a hamstring. Just some things that happened in the game football now. Minnesota was able to get him healthy. And that's where. Yeah he's not going to be the biggest guy and he's not gonNA run away from that but I just think his instincts and the way he can play so many different versatile positions in the. Nfl is probably GonNa make me think of this draft class. He's probably going to have the longest career. Brian Burns Gopher illustrated dot com joining me on the fan. If you listen to the cake show you here burns you quite a bit especially during football season but as learning. There's a lot more to the football season if you're a fan of a Legitimate College football program than just the season. We're GONNA talk recruiting here in a second a similar. Nfl draft stuff given the gophers record-setting day yesterday record-setting weekend when it came to the draft. Were you surprised at all where Tyler Johnson was drafted? Did you think there was a slide with the senior from Minneapolis? Absolutely an and probably the biggest thing. I attribute that to was the lack of verify testing for him where he didn't run any of the drills or he didn't run in the fortieth the combine. I know that was saving that. For Minnesota's pro day that was supposed to be on March Twenty Fifth. Well cove it happened that got knocked out and if no NFL scouts. They're going to be there to verify your time. I mean you saw different kind of virtual pro days and from the people I've talked to within the NFL. They just kinda laughed at that and said we're not going to take that into account so if you can't verify whether Tyler Johnson runs a four eight four four six or four or five I think you and I can both conclude in agree together that Tyler Johnson. Not The fastest guy in the world right. But that's not where he wins anyway. That's not where he made all of his. Hey and some of the biggest games in his career where if you go back and you look at Howard. Johnson's box scores again. I hate being the box score staff guy but some of his biggest games of his entire career came against the best competition. Now you can say Soda. Forced bet him the ball the time. But there's also a reason. They forced him the ball so yeah I was a little surprised to see him get as far down in the fifth round is now i. I thought he had a chance to go late. Maybe in the fourth but again I just put that into the lack of verify testing numbers but I think he goes into a great spot. Because yes you have Mike Evans and Chris Godwin down there in Tampa Bay but like I said I'm looking at the Tampa Bay buccaneers depth chart right now. Something called Scotty Miller or Jaden Mickens or Cyril Grayson do not scare me from thinking the Taliban they can't go down there and provide a complementary role to two of the biggest alto receivers in the NFL. I think that's a great place for him to try. And break in in terms of you follow recruiting for a really long time specifically in state recruiting. You know where all the Minnesota kids are going. Basically at all times you look at and Winfield's unique case because obviously he's technically Texas but he spent a lot of time here given that his dad played here forever. But even if you wanted to go come all Martin Carter Coughlan and Tyler Johnson. I think. Would I think the self-named empire class lived up to its billing Bergonzi when you talk about those three Minnesota kids all local kids come into the U and then turning out to the NFL? I'd be hard pressed to think that's really ever happened. And that might be hard to duplicate quite frankly given that Minnesota's not going to have a bunch of NFL type guys every single year. That's pretty amazing. Yeah and I think a lot of credit for that class goes to Mike Cheryl. I think you tweeted about that yesterday. Where did cruder back in? Two Thousand Sixteen when the self proclaimed empire class came to the University of Minnesota and ask for Mike. I hope he's out in that brand new ranger boat his enjoying this lovely day. It's not every day like you said you find all these. Nfl guys like Kamal Martin. Who Back in his Burnsville days playing quarterback and he was playing safety. He was supposed to go to eastern Michigan to play quarterback and then Mike Cheryl's was able to convince them. Hey come to camp we WANNA try a bunch of different positions but on linebackers the one that ultimately stuck. And that's where you see. Now he's GonNa if it's round draft pick the Green Bay packers or you look at a guy like that didn't get drafted got like Thomas Farberware. I had my I had some very high doubt is Barbara was gonNA pull whatever Barbara does at the University of Minnesota weather was Dahmer Marion where they don't come in very highly respected in the recruiting rankings. And then they outlive all expectations. You had for them well Thomas. Barbara's a senior Robbins. Dale Armstrong. Trust me when I say. He wasn't the most physically imposing linebacker. You'll ever see. But then he comes out and he starts three years from Minnesota and as a freshman has a special team rolling. I I count Antoine Field as an in state kid because he lived up here until he was fourteen fifty. I'm him and Carter Coughlin Eden Prairie and. These guys grew up together. That's how you're able to kind of get Carter and Antoine's ear back when Antoine was still deciding and that's how you're able to get him here but it's just a sensational class. Then one that Mike Sheriff is. There's a lot of credit for getting here I think Pj fleck in his back deserve a lot of credit for continuing development. Once they got here and now here we are with five Minnesota draft picks which again most in the modern era at least in the last thirty years. Yeah I think it was interesting to he. Have kind of a mini fight. Breakout yesterday about well. The all these guys and we it wasn't like it was breaking news. We talked a lot about this. During the season that a lot of the defense it was in place came from the previous staff and that shouldn't be breaking news to anybody because the one thing that staffed really really well burns a you know this was. They found good players to play on. Defense I mean that was. That was the kind of the hallmark of the kill era was the defense went from you know and you can even use draft weekend as an example. I'm sure we've talked about this. It used to be when you would follow the draft and a big ten player got taken. You'd be watching their highlight film against the gophers because the defense was just got off right and that staff upgraded the defense to a ridiculous level to where it was. That's what got them most competitive. That's what kept them in all the games that's all they wanted to play and so people. I think we're taking it as a slight on the current regime of like. Wow you guys are really making it a point that all these guys were from the previous era. Well no it's just fact and like you said credit to them for keeping them in the boat to use that cliche and continuing to develop them and getting the program to a place where they got noticed by a lot of people right. I mean with the national. Tv Games in the top. Ten ranking. I mean I think I don't think they have to be mutually exclusive. If that makes any sense right absolutely I mean you. You have the kill faction. The claims place faction. The flashback action that everybody thinks somebody does something better than one other. Those statements like you don't have to be mutually exclusive. They did a good job with this group. I think it's fair to say. Yeah Mike Cheryl is J savell Tracy. Claes did a great job of getting these guys here setting a foundation and then Joe Rossi. Pj fleck and his staff also did a very good job at developing these guys. I mean if you told me all Martin is a freshman was going to be an NFL. Guy I mean that's I tell you hear the physical attributes to do it but this past season when he was a senior Joe Rossi got everything to click for him. And that's where you saw. Once he was on the field and he could stay healthy. He was very very impactful player. From Minnesota. Say Thing Antoine Whistle..

"To people binge watching a money heist recommended by my brother. And it's crazy right now. You mentioned earlier that you just you WANNA play you. WanNa get to the NFL. But like let's say somebody did offer to Carter. You can go in the first round and obviously you have no choice of picking where you go you just get picked repick or you can go on like the third round but you can actually pick the team you go to. Which would you? Which would you choose? Third-round intriguing question hype about one question actually To be absolutely I think I'd go third around. Yeah it's it's been about split when I ask. Is there about fifty fifty? I other other specter third-round blockages anything and do the valid research with my AJ. With everybody else I think I think third around investment of one of my all time favorite questions to ask players and I was GonNa give credit to This was a question that I heard Rj show from blogging. The Boys Dot Com. Ask Somebody so. It's his question that I steal but are do you happen to be a madden guy at all do you play Madden. I did okay so you're going to be in the game next year. Obviously so you're playing somebody and they've got the digital version of you. They happen to grab your team before you could and digital Carter like picks off a pass and is running it back to the end zone to win the game for your opponent. There are GonNa let digital you score the game winning touchdown to give yourself some shine or you're gonNA turn into competitor mode and tackle yourself a digital card can get Kayla von. Told me he'd let digital him. Get seven eight sacks He he he said he would feast if he was playing himself in bad and he gave up saks all day. So I guess last question for you here. This is always what we close with. It's a little more serious I guess How do you want people to remember you? Outside of the game of Football Conversation that this had my dad coupled Asia Just what it would look like for me to use my platform to benefit the lives of people on so ultimately man I want. I want people to remember me just as much off the field for my ability to connect with a community where at Ryan whatever city. I ended up in my ability to help people to go out of my way to give in reality. I think it's it's great to give money but also as a professional athlete I think. Time is probably the most sacrificial resource you can give in so when. I have that ability. I WANNA be able to give my time to be able to act allows people feel like these questions can be like Miss America pageant was a really authentic guy you put a lot of thought into these answers and so. I know you haven't got the day that you wanted. But you know for coaches and GM's listening to this. I gotTa tell you this. Yeah yeah no he. He is great And I know for a fact that There are a lot of scouts that are really high on. Carter Coughlan not just as a player but as a student of the game and and as a person an locker room fixture and so some People v Very lucky to get him you can follow him on twitter at CMO thirty four Carter. We appreciate appreciate you.
