"Com. Ninety hundred ninety SPN in Memphis, Gary did the tournament, and how some of these guys played change your opinion at all on draft order from what you might have expected going in a m-. I think the guy who helped himself the most he's no longer in this thing. But Carson Edwards at Purdue doing what he did in the four games that he played setting a record for me three pointers in an NCAA tournament getting forty two twice getting forty two against Virginia making ten three pointers against Virginia. Obviously, you make ten three pointers in a forty minute basketball game, or I guess that one was forty five you you've done something special. But to do it against Virginia team that guards that three point line better than. Anybody else in the country was super impressive. The drawbacks are still obvious. He's a six one score as opposed to six one point guard. I mean, he can be your primary ball handler. But he's more of a score than than a traditional point guard and the list of six one scores who have flourished in the NBA is not that long. But he's gonna get looked. I would think high of the twenties now because of the performances he put on one after another in this incident play tournament who's done the best coaching job. You mentioned Chris beard and scouting defense is is something that that gets Michigan. I I haven't seen many kids be able to jump a player. No was coming the way that game turned out. And of course, Tony Bennett. Does it great job? But who's who's done the best coaching job to get to this point in this final four? I think it's probably the first guy that you name crispier because he doesn't have the pieces that suggest you supposed to be on the stage and to have a team that has such an identity, and then go out and do to you know, Mark few and John B line in back to back game. What he did to them on the defensive side of the ball is just really incredible. I mean, this is the guy who I has only been a head coach at the division level for four years. And I think though, he doesn't have the accomplishments quite yet as some of the guys who are already in the hall of fame. If you just want to base it on who gets the most out of the roster that they have who gets the most out of the job that they have the answer right now might be crispier. And you really don't even have to focus strictly on the Texas Tech stuff. He had one year Little Rock. And if you go look at the three years before he got there and the three years since he's left that program is just nothing. It's garbage. But the one year he was there. It was very good. I guess here's the details in the three years before crispier took over Little Rock. They were outside of the top two hundred in the computer rankings each of those years he takes over they finished in the top sixty they go to the tournament. They beat Purdue in the NCAA tournament. He leave they immediately go right back outside of the top two hundred each of the past three years in other words. That's seven years..

"We're sure you're gonna love the cloak. If Auburn finds a guy who can shoot Carson Edwards. That's dart. Because remember he did lay up forty two on them. And you know, that's how you beat them as you shoot from the outside when they when they tank in. I can I can promise you. I can promise you that. You are not going to see the same thing. You saw last week. When this game starts the Jared. Harper is gonna take the ball at the top of the key and go there's nobody between me and the basket, which I'm pretty sure he's going to see three people between him and the basket, and he's going to have to give the ball up. It's what happens when it gives the ball up. That's going to determine unlike unlike what happened, but he he wasn't revelation to some of us myself and match can I ask you a question because it hasn't been the best of times in Michigan supports. It hasn't been the best of times in Detroit sports, but I have a feeling that that your people have embraced the Spartans in a big way. And I have a feeling that other than the national championship. Mitch has Michigan state basketball ever felt bigger than it does right now because of that game against Duke last Sunday. There's two reasons Mike that's the one that everybody saw and his talking about. Here's a bigger one and people in Michigan will will attest to this. Michigan State University has been under the biggest cloud that that school has never been under in history for the last several years, and that cloud based on Larry Nassar's despicable behavior and a series of cover-ups and people making excuses for him and letting his his sexual abuse go on and on and on has thrown a dark cloak over. Michigan state to the point that the president was fired the replacement for the president was let go the Atlantic direct. You name it. Everybody went down and that dark cloud eventually moved its way over even to Tommaso Mark dantonio, the coaches of the big revenue sports and some very responsible reporters for some major outlets started to figure. Hey all's fair because Michigan state is despicable right now. Because what happens? So let's throw whatever little controversy that Michigan state might have had onto the list and whatever controversy football team and their basketball team. And suddenly, and I remember having this discussion privately with with Tom Izzo him him saying since when did I get involved with this thing, you know, like they would take a. An off court behavior issue with one of his basketball players totally unrelated one hundred miles from Larry Nassar, and they put it in the same paragraph. Michigan state a school out of control with the Larry Nassar situation. And this happened to the basketball team for years ago or nine years ago and the football team eleven years ago, and it was unfair. And it's what happens in the world where everybody wants to just throw together examples, and they're not out here. Tom Izzo was his irate and as hurt and as confused by that as anything I I've known him as entire coaching career. I am never seen him more just perplexed almost lost. As to what am I supposed to do? Now can open his mouth everything he would say would be taken the wrong way. If he said, well, you know, obviously, we feel for the victims here. What do you mean? Obviously you feel for the victim. Was that kind of thing you could not say anything during that stretch of time and not come out looking bad. So. To go from that Mike to this moment where suddenly it's the this is our spring this year here in Michigan. There's no good teams on the horizon here. Nobody I mean the pistons are going to make the playoffs. But nobody thinks they're gonna go far, no hockey, no football. No baseball. Michigan's out in terms of this is it this is the Detroit and state of Michigan championship for the year..

"Looks at Edwards and kind of gives them a thumbs cool affect the other thing was when the Keita made that shot and he was crossing Carson Edwards going to the bench fee over time. And. Carson Edwards slap the keypad on the chest and gave a smile like like respected as that was big those. Matt painter didn't mazing job. He's oh. Such a good, dude. And he always talked about selectively aggressive Carson Edwards. I think I got thrown out the window. Just do get as many shots as you. Can you make it every one of them? But was that's your best shooting up for two games fine in the second half of the verge or the Tennessee game. And then Edwards for basically was the best shooting you've ever seen. I'm believable. The shotmaking. And I think it also dispels it, you know, in terms of and everyone's we we had a little disagreement days like I said like Virginia system can win enough championship. And they may chassis another game. I get you to find four that. That sounds great. But in the end, they didn't change who they was like they were running up the floor, you know, shooting. I shot they were moving people screening rescreening getting of verse. They just happened to make a ton of shots. But to me, it's the system, it's the pack line. It's it's it's the motion. It's owning the tempo of the game. It's all those things to me that if you're able to do that and do it at a high level if you can only lose four ACC game in two years doing that. Then you know, what that's good enough to win Nash championship. Get set if for Jinya had lost. We would be talking about what an incredible disappointment Kentucky is lead eight hoop. Duke is. ACC tournament champs elite eight and Virginia ACC regular season champs analee. And all of a sudden that's a disciplined what the hell? Are these other guys doing that are making five million dollars a year at all these other schools have has thirteen guys? It's so he picking on picking Virginia, I've got Virginia. Well, so Burs sure in good shape. Thanks sponsor of today's show, vivid seats, I love seats, man. I don't wanna bats. You don't wanna good seek? "Is a huge deal. I'm sure you're losing your mind. How cool this is. And I texted him back. I'm not writing about this bullshit. And they basically they made me ended up. Right. Like, they like Simmons sits down yells at me, not really kind of felt that way. And it was like come on you have to write about this. So if you go back, and look, and I don't know why anyone would would actually want to do this. But I promise you true. If you go back and look like the article I wrote about that game came out like three days later. It's exclusively because I was so sad. I was like I don't want to write about this. So all right. So let's talk about the other side of that game. Because you have a long sorted history. With Purdue you see grew up Hoosier fan, and you went to a house state, and you kind of I don't wanna say what your mom played at Purdue. But you you rid promote. Yeah. You you go out a little bit. Where does Purdue go from here because that was all time gut wrench like punch in the stomach. How do you lose that game for Purdue? Well, Virginia outplayed them. So I guess like it was basically just Carson Edwards for being honest. So I I I hear what you're saying. But at the same time, I feel like Virginia that would have been an even bigger gut punch game. Because it's like they've been trying to get over this home for so long. They make it to the lead. They're going up against the producer team that is hot. But not they won the big ten, but like even produce fans all year kind of scratching their head. Like, how do we keep winning these games? We're not really playing particularly. Well, Carson Edwards would shoot them out of games. All the time. He'd be horrible. Every every third night. It felt like a severe Virginia going into game saying oh my God. It's finally going to happen. And then Carson Edwards pulls forty two points out of his ass is making absolutely everything. I feel like it would have been more heartbreaking for them. But I don't know Purdue. Honestly, I think most Purdue fans are kind of just happy to be there. And maybe that's that's I don't know..

"I don't even think Carson Edwards even played that. Well, I think he was just making everything which is a distinction that probably doesn't even need to be made. I president shouldn't even said that. But let's call it the gym or difference. Yeah. You're playing greatest men this guy. He's like he's pulling. And it's all he did was pull up from like forty feet and make it. That's good. That's obviously good. I'm just saying that it wasn't like it was wild. How it just kept happening? But I will say it fell within the flow of the game. That's the phillix salvation almost where it was almost with Napier and fourteen. It was the same thing where it's like you got to make this show. We have no what I meant. By hate didn't play wells. I met that. Like, there's never a point where you felt like the Virginia defenders he was making them look like idiots. You know, it was never like God damn. He's so much better than the Virginia defenders was like Virginia's playing great defense. The dude was this hitting the most absurd shots that no one could possibly guard thirty four point eight most sensitive players connection. That's wild. And also the most jimmer for debt knowing got to average thirty points per game since dimmer for Dan twenty eleven so I mean, that's pretty much. It was a singular effort from Carson efforts. Which is why at the end of the game when they have a chance possibly, I mean, they're down three seventy eight seventy five I look at you. And I'm like Carson over is going to dribble down and just spray it from half court, and we're gonna go double time. And unfortunately, he has a turnover at the end. But you can't at least it was him. You know of all people to turn the ball over. There's no one else on the team. That's like, hey, man. Would it blow it like if his Grady I for? Look pretty fans one is head on a stick met harms like dribbles it office near like that. It's a big thing. And he has the, you know, the person that everyone points to but Carson was doing it. It just felt it sucked. But also this guy had done everything. Yeah. Man. What a game that. That's seriously. We should do a they're the we're doing the rewatch Ables at the ringer here with the sports games. Yeah. Yeah. Bill told us we gotta pick games. I really just want to pick that one. That was incredible game. Those I don't know I'm gonna remember that for very long time and tide Jerome. I you've brought them up a couple times. But I feel like he got lost in the fray, at least in my mind because I was just watching the guys bombed the threes. And he was thrown verse no gel eastern amused. Basically, those two guys back and forth. He knows my that was my Ryan Klein cow guy. Right. I was just watching client Kline was great to start out hot. And then Carson it really did become a singular effort. It was incredible. Carson just. You knew he was shooting. He knew everyone in the building new they're shooting and Tony was dislike he's gonna start missing guys. And he just never did. What are the odds were going into the tournament that the only one seed if you would ask someone just a casual college basketball fan of you said only won one seat will make it to the final four. I think Virginia's the fourth team that people would pick for sure for sure for sure. So I think that's you know, I think Virginia has basically overcome. What is expected of them in the sense that this game was supposed to be boring. It was electric. It was awesome. It was great. It was college basketball. It's finest. And then they go to the final four. They're the they're the only one see that's there that the favourite probably now, I would I would think there should be the favorite. Maybe Michigan state will be but we'll see. But that's also I may be better for them. Not to be the favourite. I mean, Texas Tech has been playing in Saint basketball's will all these teams are great..

"So far well this weekend this past four days unless you have one from earlier in the tournament that she wanted to MIT as an example, who's your man crush Monday? I've I've already told you I'm going with Carson Edwards though. There are many other ways could go caches Winston had a phenomenal game to Jared. Harper. For auburn. These guys give us blood, sweat, and tears. They leave it all out there on the court, and it's impossible for me not to admire them. And also you have the emotions that are in full display. Even though they're locked into this game of basketball that they've been training for for years. So Kyle guy. His first four triples for UBA in the second half. But Carson Edwards and the boiler makers they would not go away and he was taking shots from five six feet beyond the line. And yet they were going in any way. Here's what seemed to change things. And really if you think all the way through the second half and over time, it was a brilliant move by coach Bennett, he started a larger lineup in the second half. So instead of just having mommy de Akita out there. He ends up adding Jack salt who's a senior to the starting lineup for the second half salt is big he's bulky, and he could help them rebound. In fact, they had more offensive boards in the second half that lead to more second chance points. And so do and Carson Edwards. We're having a shoot the lights out just to stay within striking distance. And again, this was it was a phenomenal back and forth. You wanna talk about a roller coaster ride for your emotions. Sometimes I think the stress might be too much. But it's it's amazing. I love this game. So. UVA ahead by a point with a minute fifteen to go. And then you hear that Carson Edwards Bank shot three. It was his tenth of the game. So it puts the boiler makers up sixty nine sixty seven. There's an offensive rebound by Grady. I for den so beating UVA zone game twenty seconds to go. He makes one of the free throws. And they're up three. But then Purdue fouls on the other end. I'm taking you through. All this Benicia here because it's important Purdue fouls on the other end. But tiger..

Up ahead. Pass this often he tried to get into. Edwards is down on his knees. He cannot believe that his past was off target hit finds hands. But that was the mistake of Carson Edwards one point eight hundred over junior basketball, brand it was right? It was a it was a pass that was leading leading about balance. Yeah. And it will type Virginia wasn't gonna foul because they were up three but Carson Edwards along pad. Yeah. It was on the outside tough to catchy. Hey clark. Made a couple of free throws to ice it Virginia and get what's been a long time gum and Tony Bennett. Perdue inbounds it. Carson Edwards won't even put up a shot. The Cavaliers have broken. Channel four they hit a buzzer. Beater and regulation with mama. DD akitas senate's over time. And then they get the victory over do eighty to seventy five after so many encounters with tournament heartache most notably last year. Shocking. Lost a UNBC, Tony Bennett and company have reached college basketball's pentacle Manny joins with his father. Dick Bennett who did it at Wisconsin. Coach, John, Dobson and John. Optional third is the only pair of father son duos to make final fours. Dick johnson. Tony at Virginia and Fran who they both beat to get there. They both beat Purdue. Unfortunately for a boilermaker fans, the Bennett family, not they're not going to be a well thought of in Westwood, no. And I'll tell you this too. We heard from Tony Bennett after the game that I'm comfortable with whatever happens. I know we've done a good job. There's this perception that it's been so long three years at Washington state. He had them in the Sweet Sixteen in your two. That's on. Heard of. Yes. And the first four years at Virginia they made one tournament is six years since they've been a one seed four out of those six years with four ACC title offense. They can't win in March. Yeah. It was pretty good tonight. Yeah. Yes. It was eighty to seventy five on the other side. Matt painter was two tenths of a second away. Maybe a made free throw away from earning his first ever trip to the final four and the first reproduced nineteen eighty. Instead, he's on the losing enemy talked with CBS, and and Allie Laforce after the game coach that had to be one of the most difficult moments you've ever experienced in your life. What was the moment like with your team after the game? And what did you tell them? What was hard? We had two seniors that you know. Great this year, great leadership hung in there. Played hard at everything that we asked him. You know, Carson Edwards gives an unbelievable effort. You know, so difficult. We got fortunate bounce their regulation with the Bank didn't three and got a little momentum there and then got him. I don't think they were trying to miss that. Last free throw them for them to not get shot in regulation. Just trying to pick your team up. You know, trying to get some energy to go in to overtime in Virginia was able to make it up more plays than us and win the game. We talked a lot about this this week. You lost four seniors. You were six and five point a lot of people. People. Counted you out you made the statement that a lot of people talked about what you lost. What you had what do you to say about what you had? And what these guys gave? Well, those guys were great. You know, we had some freshmen tonight that came off the bench and just a really good thing. But the guys who started force that came off the bench last year really stepped up at white. Well, but you know, it's tough, you know, just like it could win either way with us in Tennessee. And we got some breaks and Virginia stepped up made some plays overtime and. Stinks to lose. But solution to a class guy. Like, Tony Bennett Virginia, you know, we wish him well in the final affects. Thank you so much for your time. Thank you, Dr classy, and composed.

But nobody else outside of Edwards has answered the bell for Purdue in a lot of that has to do with Virginia. And how they're playing defense almost kind of sounds like the Jordan rules. We're gonna let Edward stores many points as possible shut down the other four guys on the floor. And we don't think one guy could beat us Virginia ball out of the time out. They bring it up. They've got it on the right wing with tile guy. He's got a Virginia. "Question about next next my Such touch. a bad mood. What do you care? What else? Do you want to next question? I'm not going to answering questions. Look at the fear and intimidation in the eyes of Jay Bilas is I turn to him with the intention of asking you a bunch of pointed hard hitting questions, and you will be forced to answer them whether you want to or not, and here's the first you'll be doing the draft this year. And there's all this talk about all these players when we look back ten years from now which player in this draft. Will we say is the best in the NBA? I can't imagine it wouldn't be signed Williamson that he's such a different player. We've never seen his like before on a basketball court. Now that doesn't mean he's the best player you've ever seen. But he he's doing things that players haven't done in college before and it his size, his agility level is balanced. Like, you got a forty five inch vertical and he plays routinely above the rim. It's it with his head above the rim. Not just he plays above the rim. Look RJ. Barrett is going to be an all star player. John Marantz going to be an all star player. I think Jared Culver at Texas Tech is going to be a player at the next level. It's going to be worth watching. But but science the one the question I hear from people is exactly what his fifth. Is in the NBA. He's so dominant athletically that he dominates college kids. He won't be that level of dominant against NBA athletes, and he doesn't have a really obvious natural position. Is that a concern? No. Because he's he can do anything. You put them on the floor. They're going to have to match up with him. He's not going to have to match up with others. And you put them in open floor situations in the NBA, and when they can't load up on him like they can in college. He's going to do even more and he's going to become a better shooter. Like he's making standstill threes, but but you give him any space. He will get downhill on you and and get to the rack and finish. It. Let me give you the next one here because we're onto the Sweet Sixteen give me a team that no one is really talking about that you believe as a real shot to get to the final four. Perdue Purdue is is very very good. Carson Edwards is an outstanding score. He may be small, but he's legit average twenty four game during the regular season produce a very good offensive rebounding team. They don't get the credit. They deserve for for offense. Rebound in over the last month of the season. They've been a much better D. Defensive team as well. You know, produce ranked in the forties and all the analytics defensively something you can point out say they don't guard as well. They have in the last month or so I think mad painters done a fabulous job with this team. They don't have a bunch of household names. Carson Edwards should be household name. It was he and caches Winston. We're the only choices for big ten player of the year. Winston wound up getting it. But the fact that Purdue tied Michigan state for the big ten regular season championship should tell you something about how good this team is and how well coached I watched the big ten play every single night. Painter to me was the national coach of the year with everything they lost from that team last year to come back and have the season. They did speaking of coaches. Here's my tricky one. If coach K does something that no one expects him to do. And as he's cutting down the nets after winning the championship this year. Turn for the world and says I'm going out on top. I'm retiring who's the coach of Duke next year. I wouldn't I don't know who you'd want to have walked that plank. I think that's going to be the hardest act to follow in the history of college sports, and it's not just the winning. It's the winning on television. I mean coach K for the last thirty thirty five years has been one of the premier winners in the game. And he's done it on TV the whole time. And now with social media and the like he's bigger than he's ever been USA basketball. That's going to be a tough actor follow..

"So you're hedging price probably minus one fifteen maybe the most minus twenty minus one twenty five. So with that in mind, I mean, this is a pretty straightforward head share. It's just a matter of how much you wanna cut into it. You know, for example, you've got a half unit on Purdue it ninety to one, you know, do you wanna turn that into five and a half units to win forty five units by taking, you know, five unit position on Tennessee. While if you do that keep in mind that, you know, Virginia probably going to be a six seven point favorite against Purdue in that game. Then at that point, you're Virginia heads, you know, minus fifty minus two seventy five something like that. Then all of a sudden cutting five units into it. Then you've got fifteen units in there. So in forty five units, then at that point you're only doing with three to one ticket. It seems unlikely that produce would win that game. But it certainly is a possibility. So you wanna take a very careful approach share because if Purdue wins this game, and virtually there's a coin flip. At this point in time. Then you've got a bigger hedge to worry about against Virginia. If it gets to that point. So you have to decide what it is you want to get out of this future. And I know I got some people saying, you know, I'd like to get back to or three units daily mentioned you'd like to get at least a few units off of this future. Well, that's the question to answer. I think you really spend the next couple of days deep diving into that Purdue versus Tennessee matchup, and at that point in time decide how much you wanna hedge based on how the teams match up based on the fact that you'll really neither team has had a whole lot of success in the NCAA tournament with its respective coach. But you're in the catbird seat, you know, you've got some leverage share to play this future and get a good profit out of it. But like I said I would focus on just that game. If you have Purdue future. Well, you've got other futures live, obviously. But specifically talking about this Purdue future dig as deep as humanly possible. Able into this game. See how these teams match up see how Tennessee fared in a game where maybe they head to take away one star player. What gay Carson Edwards really really dig deep into this game. And see what you think you'll be right now, you've got basically saying this game as a coin flip Purdue minus zero point three, you know, what about the venue, you venues going to play in favor of a certain team, you know, with with this game in Louisville. And you know, the rivalry factor there against Tennessee. Will this the pro Perdue grout, we'll have a little bit of a crowded in this game. Will that help them? Do you think that will help them at all do you think that's big into the line at all? You'll that's those are all things that you wanna consider here when you deep dive and study this game. I'll talk more about it with a hundred in the next segment, but you like I said for right now, I don't think you have to rush. I think you take your time carefully with this game. You find tooth comb through everything you possibly can. And then. Decide do you wanna put three units on Tennessee hedge that way, get back? If you've got a half unit Purdue get two and a half units profit. Does it have to be you know, three and a half four units on Tennessee decide what makes the most sense for you at that point in time..

"Played this week visiting teams won three times. So it's all even their three wins three losses. Indiana hoping to be the fourth team tonight against the Maryland Terrapins, obviously one of the hotter teams. In addition to Michigan is Michigan state is now is one nine in a row. They're five zero to start the weekend along with the wolverines Michigan has won seventeen consecutive big ten conference games. Dating back. Now the last season as they beat Purdue earlier in the week seventy seven fifty nine Winston caches Winston at twenty three points in that ballgame game. We've had total the home courts at one twenty tonight. We talked right at the top. About this particular series since Maryland spin in the big ten we've played six games at spend three three. But then they went on a run that was the closest ally nyc come again Michigan's offense and that defense a little bit too much for the align to recover from Nebraska one its twentieth. Straight home game last night. They beat Penn State seventy to sixty four. I'd say aerobics scored a career-high twenty two in that would of course, Nebraska now twelve and four and two and three in the big ten will be in Bloomington to take on the hoosiers at six thirty on Monday night of last week next week rather our top twenty five from last night fifth ranked Gonzaga now fifteen and two they dusted Pacific sixty seven to thirty.
