"Ruger ten 22 competition version out of their custom shop. I have a chance to get it to the range. I did go out and I had to shoot it, just to see, okay, how quiet is this suppressor? And I had some target ammo. And I thought, yeah, this would be nice and quiet, shot, and crack. It was way too loud. What in the world? I looked on the box. It was like 1200 feet per second. Wow, that's not going to work. I generally thought that target demo would be slower. So poked around and found around a subsonic subsonic, which needs to be slower than 1100 feet per second. Shot it. It was just like a pellet gun. It was cool. And it's not silence either, but it's a lot quieter. And I am waging war on burrowing animals that are tearing up the landscape around here. So once I get this excited in, it's going to be a whole new game. I am really looking forward to that. Tim's got a range of portfolios out of Carson City, Nevada. Tim, what did you get? What you shooting? Hey, Tom. Hey, I came across the new sick E 360 five excel Specter comp. So that compensated built in. That is a good-looking pistol. Yeah. I know, I had to search far and wide to get. I got it delivered. My local shop and I had the chance last weekend to take it out. I had been carrying the Ruger max 9. And I just wanted to see if this really lived up to the billing of 30% reduction in recoil. Because it's got a muzzle compensator. Yeah, it's got a compensator sticks out at the end of the bear or it's on the barrel in front of the slide. It's supposed to reduce recoil. We've all seen the claims before, so what do you think? Well, I had a side by side comparison, regular straight up, Ruger max 9. Ammo switched over to my spectra comp, a 360 five comp. And I noticed a big difference personally. I know there are some people that say, oh, I don't understand any difference. But when it should have side by side, I noticed a big difference. It's easy to get right back on your target and I'd love it. So anyway, let me ask you, are you is the difference one of felt recoil or is it more a case of less muzzle rise and being able to stay on target? The latter, the less muzzle rise. I found that if I had I wanted to just experiment with, say, if I can unload a bunch of rounds quickly, how quickly can we get back on target? And certainly, I noticed that that's where the difference really shown through. Well, of course, the competition guys have known that for a long time. If you want to shoot fast and stay on target using the gun with a comp on it, it's almost required because if the gas is shooting upward, forces the barrel downward and you actually could just watch the front sight dance on the target. It never comes off the target. Ryan, I need to develop my grip style to get to that one to get to that level. Well, I got two tips for you on that, okay? Grip it really hard with your right hand and then grip it even harder with your left hand. That's step one step two is get your right hand. Yes, sir. Run your right hand as far up, jam it way up into the beaver tail of the gun. So the web of your hand is as high as you could possibly get it at even squish it up higher than that. And then number three on your right and left thumb rotate them forward so they're not pointing up, but they're actually pointing along the length of the barrel and try to stretch that left thumb as far out as you can. And if you combine all three of those, you will be amazed at the reduction in recall you'll get. I'm going to definitely try that. I think I've been spoiled by. I had another instructor who insisted on using will not insist but said, hey look, we're shooting glocks and he said, look, they designed to have that front trigger guard cut out there to put a finger. So go ahead and put a finger in there. And so I find myself doing that unintentionally. And so now I'm in the triangle just my grip and the way that you said. Well, try it back and forth. I mean, look, it's not that you can't do it with your finger on the front shoulder guard. There's a guy named Jerry Mitchell who does it. He shoots pretty well. But.

Trump campaign continues to lose election lawsuits

"Out in two states today, the Wisconsin Supreme Court declining to hear an election challenge ruling, it should go through lower court's first. Meantime, challenges continue in several states, including in Nevada. Despite the Supreme Court here in Nevada, unanimously certifying the election results. The Trump team wants the judge to either Throw out the results of the election or declared Trump the winner. Now the Trump team says it does have sufficient evidence to prove that the elections in Nevada were illegitimate. They claimed there were substantial irregularities and proprieties and fraud. One of the major issues, according to Republicans, deals with how Clark County processed. It's mail in ballots. They say the machines used to verify signatures were problematic and that the whole process simply wasn't fair to Chef Paul in Carson City in Arizona, a judge ruling Ends to state GOP Challenge over ballot inspections The power's

"Female majority legislature in the history of the country which was here in nevada as is actually growing bigger. There's there's a. I believe it. Correct me if i'm wrong. But i believe it's a net five additional women who will be joining the ranks of the nevada legislature and they will be majorities in both houses on eleven ten majority in the senate and i believe it is a twenty seven women in the i could. That's that's right okay. Good so so now. Not all of these are democrats. Either you've got some you've got new republicans and not every seat that was held by a woman will be held by a woman again. In twenty twenty one there were some turnovers with one-seat that were represented by women but overall The the the legislature is going be A more dominated by women than it was before. What will what it if you guys had to say what you think that dynamic will do to the twenty twenty one session interesting. I think there were some remarks. During the twenty nineteen session that some of the dynamics kind of the maybe jogging or or the inter inter intra party or intra body rivalry were somewhat reduced just because of the players involved and frankly their gender and then i think i think women have. Let's dig knowledge differences in gender. Women have a different way of going about Working through issues where they are divided. And i thought that a lot less emphasis on kind of of swagger. Perhaps if i say that. And i i don't know if that that could all be very sexist in its own way but i think that that the the the effect of of women in the legislature in majority in leadership definitely changed the tone of how a lot of discussions went down and will continue to do that in two thousand twenty one interesting interesting cohen. What do you think. I think i think that's probably about right. I think in twenty nine hundred. I think the biggest effect was actually just more or less the attention that it got You know we had national reporters had national stories And and for good 'cause it's it was the first legislature in history to be in american history to have i believe to be a female majority And so certainly worth recognizing in needed needed to be recognized And i'm glad he did Did get the national attention that it did. But i'm not necessarily sure it really changed much in terms of the the process or anything like that. The debates were still fairly partisan. And as you mentioned steve lot of the candidates that are coming into the caucasus or not necessarily moderate. They're going to be just as conservative or just as liberal or progressive as their male counterparts are being like like you mentioned with anti-black. She ran her she. She didn't run in the general She didn't really have to run in the general she didn't have an opponent. 'cause she took down chris edwards by running a campaign painted him as not being conservative. Enough And so i i. I'm not sure there will be I think expanding it'll just it. It does indicate the the emphasis from both parties on expanding their expanding. The gender of their collective caucuses. I know that that was an active and basically it was something that they intentionally At least among the democrats and i especially republicans on the semi side. We're definitely trying to attract more female candidates and that's ended up with people like hike osama. Who's who while a freshman seems to like she's gonna be. She has some experience she's worked. She's been she's lobbied for the realtors there before so she's got some experience so it's just it it's signals more than anything kind of a changing of the guard not just in the democratic party this time but among both parties. Yeah yeah and and you know. There are so many dynamics at that died that we could talk about. I'll just name to a one is we. Don't even know what the session is gonna look like. Is it going to look like the tony. Nineteen session where we're all in the building and lobbyists are there and the press is there and there's open hearings and all that or is it gonna look like the special sessions that took place this summer. Where their social distancing there's limited access to the building there's virtual meetings on zoom and everything else and and there's you're really not allowed just a few a handful of press people allowed in the building that really could impact the way things go and i think that is largely dependent on the vaccine whether or not they roll out a vaccine in its widely available before during our or right around the time the session and then the other one which is not going to actually take place in the session in my understanding after the session which is redistricting which is supposed to be done in the first session after the census but because the census numbers of delayed we're looking at a special session to handle the redistricting. I still think that even though that will be a long way off it's going to overshadow everything that goes on in the in the legislature because while while while i think the present circumstance the results of the election are going to force people to have to come up with some compromises on legislation. I still think that there are a lot of people that democratic caucus who say will. We'll fix that After this session with a redistricting plan that favors the democrats in cements democratic majority For the next decade we can do it by simple majority. The governor will sign it as an added bonus of deviousness we can probably get a few republicans to go along with it. If we make their districts really really a a safe to and And get them on board with the with the whole thing even though the democrats will get the lion's share of the pie if you will. I think that's an overshadow everything is going on. That'll be a back drop in everybody's mind what. How are we gonna do this or we're going to do it. Collaboratively and in a neutral way or are we going to do it in in a very craven way and i always leaned toward craven Only because redistricting is literally the most nakedly political act apoliticial ever engaged in game design. I got the opportunity once years ago to see a redistricting in action. It was back in the days before a gs and computers and there was a politician was going over the map. Any had the results of the election in one hand and the the list of preseason the other and going precinct by precinct and seeing getting winner to lose and if he lost that precinct was out and giving it to somebody else. was in he kept it and and that's essentially how that process works. And so it'll that that i think will be the really interesting sort of dessert That we get to eat after the regular session. Main course desert possibly or possibly something else.

"And that's still one of the really tight races. I think it's less than six hundred votes separates them right now. So there's still some. There's still some wiggle room in their depending on those provisional ballots that it could tighter but like you said right now. That is those that. That's the seat. I was really interesting to me. Is that Reporting before ahead of the election and talk to Some of the leaders in the republican caucus for the assembly Talking to tom roberts was the assistant majority leader for seven vata insulin uva four of the caucus He basically laid this out that they weren't going to try to their. They weren't trying to flip the majority Their main goal was to get out of the super minority and that meant focusing most of the most of their effort most of their money onto four five races and the three of them. And i think at this point. I think they're going win. It looks their head or looks like they're going to win four of them for five the only one that they really are are behind in and probably won't make ground in. Is that district twenty nine that henderson race with incumbent lesley cohen holding off republicans. Stephen delile pretty pretty easily at this point. But like you said. There was other races. Dickens race in sparks kasama in doubt kind of holding as a republican seat in hamburg seat. Macarthur coming back. It really seems like it's gonna pay off them and it gives them some. It gives them a little bit more power and it takes the pressure off of the republican caucus in the senate where they don't have to worry about just a single republican flipping next year in. And and and i will say a lot. Less cohen was probably happy. Face on this time than stephen silber krause saw because he is trying to unseat her. He's successfully didn't once. Unsuccessfully tried twice and He tried his hand at a regions race. This time in came in fourth in a four person race. But but in any case. You're right and i wonder you know. I wonder this. I said this to a group Half-jokingly united speaking to and i said. Listen you know who really doesn't want a democratic supermajority in this particular session Immigrants because Because if they had a suit a democratic supermajority and a democratic governor the stars would have aligned in such a way that they have not aligned about a very very long time right now. The health and financial security voters over fifty are on the line that's why. Aarp nevada is for your voice to be heard aarp. Nevada wants to make sure that you know all of your voting options in that all americans can vote safely or the choose to vote from home for in person to learn more about your voting options visit. Aarp dot org slash n v votes. That's aarp dot org slash envy votes paid for by aarp. And i think people in the base would expect results. Expected emigrants actually do the things that they said they wanted to do on the campaign trail and there would be no foil. There would be no like all you know what we yeah we totally would start medicare for all in nevada except those darn republicans won't let us do that so you know what gotta help us next time. Get more democrats elected will now that that argument is out the window now. It seems like the opposite argument is true. It's it's like look there is no mandate here And if you were read. The individual races at as collective way of the only mandate here really is look. You ended up with a divided government. You're gonna need republican votes for things that require two-thirds like raising taxes and as a result of that. You're going to have to work together. You can't just blow off the minority like it was possible to do any assembly in in the what. We saw that special session and quite frankly you can't even blow off the republicans. Even though they lacked a supermajority in the senate they still they still blew him off on the tax bill which is now In court so it. I wonder if that message is gonna come through it because the the the typical reaction at the end of this as well darn it. We didn't get our supermajority. Let's try to get our supermajority next time by introducing a bunch of bills forced the republicans to vote on terrible things and then will make them bad on the campaign trail next time. And then we'll have a supermajority and then we'll be able to do what we want. How about that you guys. And that's i i. That's one way to go. I just wonder if if you know facing a budget has been cut by twelve percent of facing all the the out. Outpourings of corona virus. Some of which. I think we probably have yet to see a come out. I wonder if that's the way they'll go. Or if they really will realize hey you know what we do after work with the other. Yeah your point about how difficult this legislative session is going to be given the exigencies around covid in its effect on the state budget on on healthcare at sarah. I mean it's almost like who wants to be in the minority rather than the majority to deal with that right. It's it's and it's going to be a very interesting is you. Said they're going to have to come up with balanced solutions to this. The democrats can't You know count on their their super majority in one house to push that through and then and then see what they can to nagel in the senate so I wonder if that's gonna really resolve in in a lot of important things. Not getting dealt with appropriately but on the other hand the best could be a very balanced and nonpartisan solution. Did some of this. I mean in the a sustainable solution. Because you know i'm not even ruling out tax increases look republican caucus i. I don't think there's any doubt just got a lot more conservative. because you added anti-black who ran is an unabashed conservative. In fact attack chris edwards for being insufficiently conservative and which raised some eyebrows. Because it's not like chris. Edwards was a liberal And so any lack as there. It looks like andy matthews is going to be there So that that Jill dickman Who was a conservative when she was up there so that caucus just got more conservative. But even with i wouldn't necessarily ruling at rule out tax increases twelve percent budget cut requested by the governor is a serious thing i mean that is a serious thing and i don't think we're done with our financial problems just yet Because until convention star coming back until there's a vaccine in people really start coming back to las vegas. I don't think it's it's over and so that's going to be a problem. What i what. I i think probably might happen. You can tell me if you agree. Agree or disagree with this. Is that if the democrats you know. They're going to have to do something that they don't like to do. Which is go to the republicans. Say look we got this financial problem would what what should we do about. What can you guys do. What are you willing to do. And the republicans are going to say. We need to cut the budget. We need to make budget cuts and when we need to do that first. Before we even consider tax increases and so the democrats are going to have to do that in at least entertain those conversations if not actually performed in and do those things if there's any hope that they have of raising taxes as part of an ultimate solution to the problem and and i i don't know i mean they clearly do not like to do that and it's not something you have to bother with when you have the supermajority weren't a new territory now. Yeah i mean to that point. I called this week. Cover the economic forum and they're looking at a recovery that's two years off So yeah this can. This is not something. That's going to magically go away with with the emergence of adak seen early in twenty twenty one so I wanted. I was going to shift gears any more on that. No i think. I think we've exhausted happy. Yeah got.

"Welcome to rj politics. Political podcast of the las vegas review journal on politics and government editors steve civilians and we are going to do a very special edition of the podcast. Today worry appleton is taking some much deserved pie off so we are going to spend some time with the carson city bureau that skuld lockhead who is the carson city bureau chief and build denser the carson city bureau reporter. We're gonna be talking about all sorts of numbers races now. One thing before we get started we should say that the final numbers are not in the numbers that we're gonna talk about are mostly final. But they could change because of provisional ballots in because of late arriving mail ballots and that have yet to be counted so so mind. The number are here today. We're taping on. Thursday of the numbers should be finalized by friday. But the ones you here today may be a slightly off from the final total. So with that caveat. Let's start talking about the nevada legislature. There is a lot to to discuss here. But let's throw in and just get first impressions of what everybody thought about the about election. We know that the senate is gonna remain thirteen. Eight democrat division. No changes in the senate the except for it looks like a freshman christie watson is gonna replace jobs woodhouse and roberto laying the former chairwoman. Estate party is going to replace. David parks We'll start we'll start the senate because there's there was more changes assembling. We got a lot of different Different changes going on there so Any surprises any a-. Any watts on on the senate came out at for me The the race for senate district fifteen up in up in reno between the incumbent republican heidi cancer the democratic challenger. When how jacksons. I think i expected it to be a little bit closer than it ended up being againsir. Looks like she's going to end up winning by about two and a half. Three points I think democrats really viewed that as their best. Chance is really their only chance to get to that. Supermajority number of getting fourteen senators and it really just never ended up being closed. I think part of that's probably just get answered. Had so much more money in that race and that tends to play a big difference. Yeah and but the registration and district really had changed over over the last decade and The they're they're only separated by a thousand more Democrats over republicans so that read is still pretty close up at this yet. Actually from when gadget was first elected in that seat in sixteen to two two this year it actually was a three point. Flip from republicans holding a two point advantage back in sixteen. The democrats are actually One point advantage in that race now still. I mean it definitely tightened i. I think answered ended up winning her sixteen race by almost eleven points. So this is a significant closer. Yeah yeah we'll wash county really changing. You guys both live in reno in washington county and so he really has changed. I mean it was like like the whole state of nevada at one point it was republican majority at slowly narrowed Over the course of the year and And now in perform especially the democrats seem to be doing very well up in washington. Yeah i mean. I was just looking at the at the turn out in the presidential race and Biden took it by not a lot but he did take it. Be trump not by as much as clark but Yeah definitely been a shift there. I wanted to say what's been interesting for me in the senate race is watching from election night. Those two races down in las vegas harare. The seat held by majority leader. Cannizzaro and christopher watson state on election night those republicans were winning those races. And as we've gone to the recount cannizzaro and watson had come from behind to take the lead. Yeah yeah definitely. That was those were when. I remember actually when i drafted my column for last week. I actually said this is written it. Looks like to republicans may win in the seats. Where we've yet to see what's going on. And of course we told our our listeners. Many times before the The democrats make out size use of mail balloting as as as the modality of voting and so those mail ballots come in. They tend to favor the democrats over the republicans who prefer in person voting in who we saw the bulk of the person votes were were are the republicans and they beat the democrats every single day at least in clark county in terms of early voting so so those numbers were were bound to change as the as the mail. Ballots came in but it was. It was tight and era. There were there. Were some folks who were wondering. Is nicole cannizzaro gonna come back carson city and and We'll republicans regain the the the seat that they took from That actually joyce woodhouse from them that they had taken from her before so it was it was a little a little bit tight there but You know it's funny. Though after all the money spent especially in the cannizzaro race status quo nothing changes. Thirteen eight is still the division democrats hold all the democratic seats. There were no turnovers in the state senate and in fact you had three democratic state senators. Who didn't face any opposition at all. In one republican state senator pete by chia who it were not for term limits would probably be the of his china love the nineteenth district because it stretches from oregon and idaho border all at all the way down to clark county and prediction prim- In the southern part stay or poor beat when he has to go visit his constituents. he's got a. He's got to rent seen as one of the largest largest legislative districts in the country. I read more now. Steve on your on your point. About senate district's five and six and how tight they were. It's also really interesting to me. Just the amount of money spent in those races not only this cycle but even going back into the those seventeen recalls where the was the republican legislative. The national republican legislative commission or committee had poured in all the money trying to recall woodhouse and cannizzaro back in that day. So these were these have been targeted racist for republicans for several years now and they still just did not have the firepower to get to really over. Turn it over turn those seats even the samurai even after the recalls the best you can say is that they really made her work workforce in nicole cannizzaro. I think uniquely individually Has really had to work for i mean. She got elected by thousand votes in her first race. Nail biter and you have this close race. That always is is is a nerve wracking to start She comes into the in session. And all of a sudden is made leader because the actual leader is taken out of the of the process because he committed a campaign finance violations in the fbi was about to indict him so socially comes leader never prepared for didn't plan for the leadership. The session caserta finds her way through.

"And Tom Paula calluses on the phone talking talking us through the this year session and new bills at are out. And what's happening? So Tom you wanna finish up before we went to break a couple just to to remind listeners that there's a great website, WWW dot L, E, G dot state dot N, B got US. That's the legislative council bureaus of the legislature's website. And you can go there. It's very user friendly do search for whatever topic that you're interested in and you'll find the Bill there. It's just a fabulous resource for citizens dealing with the the water issue. There's an interesting Bill coming up AB two. Sixty five which would require the desert research institute to study water treatment and recycling so of interest of the conservation community, and then just keep in mind. There's also the again going back to the economic benefits we have a b three thirty one which would create an office about recreation and a grant program to help boost our tourism industry in the outdoor recreation area. So a lot of bills others that are dealing with conservation measures in general. So again, I just encourage people if you've got a particular interest not uniquely on conservation issues, but everything's up there on that. Let's cancel bureau website, and a great resource, you can put your opinion on bills directly online. Find your legislators contact information and to plug into the whole decision making process up in Carson city. That's right. Find your Bill track at follow it participate be a member of sustainable society. Things you said going to break was when you save electricity. You save on water. And what's interesting is. Conversely, that's true as well. So when you save on water also save on electric city because people don't think about well, if you're saving some water, you're saving water. That's great. But you also saving the pumping of that water. So there's a lot of lectures, e goes into getting that water delivered to people's faucets. Excellent point. So other things happening in the legislation. When do we expect to see some of these bills voted on well today, we'll be a big day again for a major advancement in clean energy with SP three fifty eight against shut up to Senator Chris Brooks? He's been moving that advancing that concept ever since he's been in the legislature starting off as an assemblyman. So again wanna recognize some of the folks that have. Kudos to the entire legislature. As it did move forward unanimously. But a couple of folks have been working at it for a long long time. Also to various groups that have supported us such as Nevada conservation league and others that have been really just getting the word out explaining the benefits later this week. Again, we have a b four sixty five that is coming up. So that is the Bill that would provide expanded solar access program and facilitate solar getting to lower income neighborhoods and an opportunity for lower income consumers to get some savings from solar. So those are bills that are coming up this week again, there's an opportunity to support or to voice your opinion. One. Also, go back to the electric school bus issue. That was again, Senator Chris Brooks working in conjunction with Senator Pat Spearman and trying to get more electric transportation on the roads specifically in the school sector, which I think is both. Great for the environment. But also provides an educational opportunity as kids get a chance to see what electric Motors can do as as we get those types of day calls on the roads time, I heard a metric one time that the Clark county school district is a second largest buses earn the US. Is that true? I was I could well be you may have. Yeah. It sounds sounds certainly plausible. They are the fifth largest district. And I think they're in districts that sized they're the most spread out most districts that are huge like that Lanta LA New York are more compressed than so more kids are are walking to school. So the school bus program. That's a great idea is this a pilot program, or is this a you gotta do this. So how knows Bill go to work a pilot program. Right. I mean, just the sheer number of as you allude to sheer number of buses, there's not funding in order to provide all all school districts. You know, certainly. Not all buses will be going electric. But certainly enough can get on the road where we can start to see some empirical data verify the cost savings estimates. See how they play out in in the real world. Be able to see how batteries perform under different conditions of high heat and so forth. And then also provides an opportunity to really see some interesting concepts. When you've got a big battery and about you've got an energy storage device that mobile, so there's been some interesting discussion as to addition to transporting students what could those batteries on buses be used for? And it's, you know, the idea of electric storage is certainly an important concept. Now, we have with electric school buses, the the idea that there was a need or backup power. You've got a big battery and a chance to move it on over to a facility that may not have power for whatever reason and get. Some some backup to critical facilities through electric school buses. So number of interesting ideas, how electric batteries and vehicles can help improve the grid down the road. We'll see more vehicle to grid integration. And the idea that batteries in whatever vehicle can help manage the grid more economically. And we also went to space seeing some ratepayer savings for everyone as we get more electric vehicles on the road as we'll be able to leverage our electric system more efficiently. So good stuff than about alleged. Sure is looking at. And so it's an exciting time and the energy relevant about. And thank you for for your interest and keeping people informed as to what's

Then a boat dropped off the keepers in the spring and pick them up in the fall. There are three families that lived here pretty much on their own other than some traffic on up and down the shore and five miles to the closest town for their mail. Ransack leads the way up the lighthouse stairs to the lamp room and the sites priced possession. This lens has been in here since nineteen ten to keepers listed with a kerosene lamp to warn ships away.
