"Blocking the carpool lane traffic slows of twenty two David, thanks so much appreciate it. We'll check back with you in just a little bit. Right now. It's seventy one degrees in Fullerton, sixty six at west LA, it's six thirty five. He our news. I'm Ari Shapiro. Mary Louise Kelley immigration and customs enforcement ice plans to arrest and deport thousands of migrant families beginning as early as Sunday, these families have been ordered removed by a judge. But historically, ice has not made it a priority to go after entire families. Mark Morgan is the acting director of ice. He says the agency has no choice but to enforce the law, he said that to NPR's John Burnett, who sat down with Morgan today, and who is sitting here in the studio with John Lewis. What do we know about this operation that ISIS about to launch across the country starting Sunday? We know the Justice department has fast track the asylum cases of thousands of recently arrived immigrants, mostly from Central America, and they're in ten major US cities. They include New York, Los Angeles, Houston Chicago, and San Francisco. And we believe that these are the areas where is agents will be targeting families in the coming days. I spoke with acting ice director, Mark Morgan. In this afternoon at a conference table in his office at ice headquarters got a commanding view, the Washington Monument, and the Potomac, and he was saying he wishes his agents didn't have to go out and knock on doors to arrest immigrants because it's labor intensive and it's dangerous for the agents but he doesn't expect them to turn themselves in the history has shown they do not. So what, what are options they've had due process? They they've had access to attorneys that had access to interpreters majority of them. Don't even show up. We have no choice. It's about the rule of law. If those who've gone through the process and received final orders if we don't enforce that, then that whole process is meaningless, John for those of us who have not covered ice rates for many years as you have what is different about how these appear to be taken for. It's dramatic mary-louise up to now of prioritize unauthorized immigrants, single adults who have criminal charges, whether they're serious or minor, now they're going to round up recent arrivals and today. The great majority of them are mothers and fathers with their children who've committed no crime of illegal entry, but I can't help but think of the blistering criticism that the administration came under last year when it was targeting families, and separating parents of children at the border. Are they taking steps to avoid the appearance, that they're mistreating parents and children? Again, that's really the question that some people administration are asking now. I mean rounding families can be messy what if agent show up at the apartment and only the is there her daughter is at the data or church camp or off with their cousins. And so these these beefy armed agents come back and arrest the daughter separately. Here's Morgan again. My duty is not to look at the political optics, or the will than there, that's for the politicians this as I with the American people should want us to do as law enforcement officials is to enforce the rule of law and maintain the integrity of that system. If you're here in violation of federal immigration law, if you. Had to process and you have a final order. What are we supposed to do? I have another question which time hoping you to Morgan, John, which is if this round up families goes ahead where will they all stay where will they be detained because I thought one of the problems was there. They were out of detention beds. I asked the director that Mary Louise. And he basically said, this is our job, and we'll find places for them. The truth is, they're not likely to get more congressional money for detention beds. These families are likely to be deported quickly in terms of long-term detention. I asked him about ice being in hot water with the inspector general of homeland security, a recent report chided ice for systemic problems at its contract immigrant detention centers. It described grievous violations such as overly restrictive. Segregation inadequate medical care food, safety issues dilapidated in moldy housing units. Morgan insists ISIS addressing those deficiencies and doing better. I pressed him on it. I just dismiss that outright is doesn't care. That's absolutely false abuses continue year after. A year year. So I take exception with your use of the word abuse. It's not abuse. No system is perfect. But I think what you do you encourage oversight. And then you do your best to continue get better. Mark mortga knee acting director of ice talking there with our John Burnett. John Burnett nice to see you and thank you. It's great to be here. Police departments are reminding officers of their social media policies after the publication of thousands of -fensive posts by cops on website earlier this month, as NPR's Martin Kosti reports the scandal is testing the boundaries between free speech and police credibility. The posts were collected by something called the plain view project. They looked for officers public Facebook accounts, then collected the posts and comments that they believed merited public scrutiny some of the posts endorse violence against criminal suspects. Others are plainly racist in one comment, and officer caused LeBron James Aranka, tan to be debt, arrogant to believe. So callous. It's unbelievable to Ruben Jones works for a gun violence reduction program in Philadelphia. One of the city's cops were found making these posts people up in arms, people angry and rightfully so. And people do not trust the police Jones wants to see cops fired over this, and some will be says Philadelphia police Commissioner Richard Ross. But I the department is having a law firm review the posts on the group's website because they're not all fireable offenses. You know what I'm not trying to minimize any that were in this. There are some that were catcher that we quite don't understand why they own their home. You know that some of them were. I don't want to call it innocent, but I just want to say that we we're trying to figure out why some of their own there and this is where things get complicated for police departments. Laura scary is a Chicago Turney that specializes in civil rights cases involving the police police officers don't give up their first amendment, right? By the mere fact that they're police officers. She says officers have the right to comment on matters of public concern, like politics or societal questions. But at the same time their bosses can tell them not to discredit the department. So it's all very case by case you can have two police officers that voice their frustration over comment that was made by the black lives matter movement. And depending on the bourbon, depending on the content, and depending on the context equipped be protected, but then it may not be protected. There's some practical considerations here. Cops who said racist things in the past may not have credibility on the stand earlier this week. Prosecutor in Saint Louis said she'd, no longer bring cases or seek warrants based on the police work of seven officers whose posts appear in the plain view database on a website for law enforcement called police one retired police chief Joel Scholtz wrote a column headlined. Is it time to scrub Facebook? Super frustrating time to be in law enforcement and great time to be retired. Many of the posts in the plain view, website, date back to the time right after Ferguson. And they're angry reactions to anti police sentiment in hostile crowds. Schultz says work stress does not excuse being a jerk as he puts it. But he hopes these posts will be seen in context say maybe it's a bad apple. We'll know. Maybe it was a good apple on a bad day, Philip Tiba Goff of the center for police equity thinks the problem runs deeper. Yes, he says some of the posts in the database are gallows humor. Cops blowing off steam but others cross a line. Are so racist there, so bigoted that is difficult to imagine how a person who would think it was okay to say that even with their friends should be half with having a badge and a gun. To take away life and liberty in the name of the state. He says, even if only a few of the cops department, are talking like this. It undermines public trust in the police Martin. Kosti NPR news..

"High occupancy vehicle lane? Most of us called the carpool lane. It's to incentivize people to car pool to get together with people who work in the same area, you work. Maybe even the same company to drive or ride together to work saving gas, aiding parking costs taking a car or two or three off the road. And what's the point of that to reduce congestion to increase commute times? And of course to help to reduce air pollution. I mean that was a big factor in this. It was supposed to be an environmentally friendly policy. So is it doing that? Is it actually accomplishing any of that? And I'm saying, no, even when I do see more than one person in a vehicle, which I did not today, they're often spouses or their children of the people who are driving, and you're you know, fully qualified to use the vet that lane. If you have any passengers in their car doesn't matter what the age of the passenger is. But when you have spouses and children, you're not taking a vehicle off the road. Either children and spouses are likely not going to drive themselves separately anyway. I I kinda like the idea of the HOV HOV lane being used for vehicles that are electric or hybrid hybrid. At least then you're incentivizing the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, but it's not really a car pool lane. There is no high occupancy there are more scofflaws. Then there are car pools. Is that what your experiences to do you see that? There are people who are actually using the HOV lane as carpools or does it occur to you that this is just a lane people go in and they speed, and they completely ignore the fact that they're not supposed to be in that lane at that time. And it's frustrating for people who want to abide by the rules. And you know, certainly don't wanna get a ticket. You know with my luck. I'd get into that lane. And then there'd be a police car behind me. But I don't wanna cheat. I typically don't cheat. I don't want to cheat. And the I read this interesting little tidbit in a in a recent study that said this it said when one of the four existing lanes on the Santa Monica freeway was converted to an HOV lane in one thousand nine hundred seventy six the number of car pools increased by sixty five percent, but ridership increased by two hundred I'm sorry, not but bus ridership increased by two hundred and fifty percent and peak period vehicle trips decreased by ten percent carpools required three or more occupants, but initially carpools accounted for only three percent of vehicles and bus. Passengers accounted for zero point eight percent of travelers therefore twenty-five percent of freeway. Capacity became dedicated to about six percent of vehicles that were carpools and three percent of travelers who rode buses that makes it far too many winners. There was a public outcry and shortly afterward the lane was returned to general use. Another interesting question out of that study is you know, we need to do some more research on this. They say in cases where adding HOV lane as much greater benefits than adding a general purpose lane might be more cost effective to add to general purpose lanes. Giving them any HOV lane projects include auxiliary lanes at flyover ramps and all sorts of other thing, it might be better to put in two lanes instead of one but make it general vehicle traffic, and this all sounds to me like some common sense. There was another research piece that was really filled with a lot of scientific jargon. But it pointed out that HOV lanes are.

And there's been an earthquake or whatever I can one hopes still less the central office is destroyed also possibility, but in that case, what are you gonna do? You have that outlet? The problem is nobody's enforcing these rules. We're just kind of letting it go just kind of whatever the internet. It's gonna be great lot of hand, waving. Hey, don't worry about it. Workout in the internet. It's all gonna be great. Kinda old fashioned that way. Yeah. The internet's great. I love it. There's some things you don't want to throw out. Eight hundred eighty eight ask Leo Tom in Tustin, California. Hi, tom. Hey, hey. I'm well. I was just. Talk to you like was reading a little bit about you. And I just happened to notice we have the same birth date, November twenty ninth. Absolutely. You me and Louisa may Alcott. Great. History before yours. Well, probably not much. But okay. Question. I use for my my password. Excellent choice. Yup. And they have they recently added feature VPN nice. And of course, they increase premium also. But I'm curious to know, whether it's worth going on they beat does that slow down the internet. You can it can. So what you're doing with the VPN which of virtual private network. Most of us. I experienced these in back in the day as a way to log into your company's corporate network from home. See in fact, it could even be done over dial up you'd have special software running in your computer, you dial into the corporate network, and you'd be on the corporate network and the way it worked to keep the corporate secret secret is you'd be talking the corporate network through an encrypted tunnel. So nobody could spear in and see what you're doing. And it was secure people realize, you know, this would be a good way to protect your privacy and security on the public internet to we could use a virtual private network. From our home or a coffee shop or a hotel. We we've we've fire up that software on the computer on the phone. It has a ver a tunnel. A an encrypted tunnel to the server out there somewhere. No longer, your work usually through a service and then emerges into the outside world and by doing so you word anybody snooping on you at your ISP or in the coffee shop, you also kind of anonymous yourself a little bit because it no longer emerge on the internet with your internet address, you merged with their internet address. So that's a VPN is why people use VPN's and anybody can make a VPN how fast it is depends a lot on how much bandwidth they put into it. How many servers they have? So not all VPN's are as fast, and I don't know how fast dash lane is you should see their couple of things when you're choosing VPN. You should check one is how many servers they have where those servers located you want one close to you. But also, maybe want one in different global locations because that would give you the opportunity to appear as if you're in England or Singapore wherever else you'd wanna. Sometimes that's useful. You'd also want to make sure that they don't log your use of the VPN that's important for privacy. Otherwise, they're no different than your internet service provider. Really your VPN provider becomes an ISP. So you want them to have somewhat better policies than Comcast. Cox her spectrum or frontier, I'm looking at their VPN. And it's it's it looks like they're probably running servers all over. And if how much do they charge extra? I don't know. It's probably about. I don't know. It's probably twenty bucks something like that. It should be. You know, we have a VPN sponsor the charges seven dollars a month that's fairly reasonable it shouldn't be too cheap. Because then their incentive to monetize you somehow. Of course, you're already a customer, which is nice, and it shouldn't be too expensive. Because you know, you're only going to use it once in a while, you're probably not gonna use it all the time. Well, the important part about it is that they put it on raise the price yob since. To go on it or not you have the option to not eight four. Oh, well, I also notice you can't choose the server location. So that'll help with performance you want the closest server for performance, but it doesn't give you one of the features of upn which wishes to eliminate geographic restrictions some people like to Francis, watch English television, and they'll have a VPN server that's in England. That's kind of that's a little ski. So I I don't blame them for not getting into that. I used to use a VPN work. Yeah. You're familiar with it then. Yeah. Yeah. That was quite a while. And I I just haven't gotten on this one because I heard somewhere that. Tend to slow down the internet connection quite a bit. There is you're adding layer of overhead. Absolutely, you know, because you're not connecting to if you go to Yahoo dot com. You're going through dash lanes server to Yahoo dot com. Additional layer may or may not slow you down. Just depends on how much bandwidth they put into it. Fast. Those computers are and so forth. I think they make an excellent password solution. So it's interesting. They obviously feel like they need to make more money. Yeah. So you don't. So you're required. Yeah. I was not happy about that. But you don't have to use it on. But you are required to pay for. Yes. Yes. That's interesting. I used to be around. I think around twenty nine dollars or something like that for new premium year or a month. A year. That's not bad. That's very I think it went up to fifty nine. Okay. So that's not expensive as VPN's go. I pay ninety nine dollars a year for a VPN. So no, it's not. It's just I, you know, I it's just whether you want to use it or not. Yeah. It's weird that they require it. Yeah. So it's really an opportunity for them just to raise their rates. They know most people won't use the VPN. So it's a way for them.

Waze looks to change lanes as home for carpoolers

"Talking tech is brought to you by wicks dot com. With wicks, you can use artificial design intelligence to create a stunning website right from your phone in five minutes or less. Just go to wicks dot com. That's w. i. x. dot com. And create your professional website today. So if you're like me, you probably use the ways app all the time religiously to navigate your way through traffic and find the best route home. So consider me a little surprise that the CEO of the company recently said that the ways app that we all know and love will be very, very different in the coming years and taking on a whole new meaning. Let me fill you in on just what's going on with ways, and it's ambitious plans to connect the hundred million writers into carpool passengers on today's episode of talking tech. I'm Jefferson Graham with USA today so ways the app we use for navigation now wants to be the place for carpoolers to connect. Here's the exact quote from Nome Barden the CEO of the company quote. When you think about ways of few years from now, you will think about ways as the mobility platform that gets you to work, not only the platform that tells. As you which way to go unquote. So ways now has a tab in the app to connect carpoolers in California, Texas, Washington, state, Illinois, Nevada in Israel. You sign up putting your daily commute time and your location, and then a wait to hear from somebody else that might be going in the same direction for your efforts. You get to charge rent in the car for the ride fifty, four cents a mile, and you find your customers from ways IRS like you who live nearby. Now, this is not to be confused with carpooling efforts from ride hailing companies, lift lifting Uber with them, the lowest price fair is a shared ride, and the savings are usually pretty substantial a lot more than fifty four cents a mile though. What I like about carpooling with Lifton Uber is that drivers had to sign up to participate. They probably have a clean car. And for the most part, it's not a scary experience. But bringing a random stranger into your car, someone you met online is akin to picking up a hitchhiker. I guess the only difference is that you have their information available to you from within the app and us, you know where they live. I signed up this week for the carpool service. In hopes. Someone picks me up on the offer. My work commute is five miles, so I don't expect to get rich on the two dollars and fifty cents that I might pick up. No, I just want to report to you on the experience ways hopes it can make a real impact with this initiative. Get more cars off the road. We've seen how successful carpool lanes and cities have been at that. So no, that ways has quite the uphill battle here listeners. What do you think? Would you sign up for the car pool service? Are you ready to have me drive year round l. a. let's talk about it on Twitter where I'm at Jefferson Graham. The magazine's website statement, CBS has said it is investigating the claims made against moon vs all allegations of personal misconduct. Are to be taken Very seriously now Ronin is not one. To report these things without a good deal of research right he's he's been shown his track record is pretty good All right so the concern here is what about. His? Relationship with Julie Chen. And that's workplace married now jeeze All right so that it's still weird I'm assuming this has to do with others? Yeah Assuming too but it. Did OBI already you wonder how they got. Together Exactly Underlying and you would see that as a pattern of, conduct even though it created a, marriage it's was a pattern of. Conduct they're still so. Concerning. Right. Absolutely considering she still works is that is that? New they're just, out comes out. Today I surprised I missed. It is? It did it just come? Out In the last two hours that's. Members along with that. Team. We. Will continue to focus on creating value for our? Shareholders maybe I'm, not understanding what. Very public so they have a dispute? With les Moonves don't they Disputes it's. Going on right now and that's, why they're questioning the timing of this article I have to to dig in a little. More I'll look during your next door has been married to. Julie Chen since two thousand four they. Wed less than two weeks after moon finalized, his divorce His wife pattern that's a. Pattern I just say the but I guess is there any unwanted kissing touching is that what it was well apparently, Ronan. Farrow, who broke the story has been investigating Moonves and the environment at CBS four months as rumors swirled through the industry that's such an. Article was in the works. It's unclear what impact the New Yorker report will have. At a time when moon vez locked in litigation. With Sherry Redstone oh that's the lawsuit that they're talking about the wife of Sumner Redstone, or the daughter rather who's fighting for control of CBS Viacom She she put Unloaded some, interesting is Very scary dramatic yeah but the I'm just trying to get my head around the unwanted kitchen kissing and touching in a time when men may not have been aware that you? Know what I mean it depend how unwanted touching was what kind of touching or does he, just, fire. Charlie rose right No So I'm assuming this is relatively.
