"We're, we're getting. We're doing good here. We've covered the eighteen nine. We've covered the new surfaces. Amazon raising the minimum wage. They've been getting so much heat as Jeff Bezos becomes the richest man in the world. They're poor. Workers are suffering. So they've raised the minimum wage to fifteen dollars for all US employees, and then they cut stock options. Come out of somewhere. Jeff's pocket. Monthly bonus is gone. I guess there's nothing much to say about that. This was, I believe a don't want to be cynical ploy for Amazon to fend off unionization of its workers. All. Trusting interesting, wouldn't be surprised. Facebook is briefing department of homeland security officials about that breach. They're concerned that there might be a backlash in Washington. It's bad enough Mark had to go testify once he doesn't want to go back. I don't blame him. In an onstage interview, Monday with the Wall Street Journal as part of ad week in New York City, Facebook's vice president of marketing solutions, Caroline Everson compared hackers the hackers who broke in to an odorless weightless intruder that walked in the hackers. I know, but okay. Isn't it the whole idea of intrusion. And weightless. That's why we didn't discover it. They didn't odorless weightless. Let's see. What else. The feds have we, we now know this happened a while ago. I think back in in August force tonight phone ten owners unlock his phone with his face face ide-. The vestige was child abuse, vestich in Forbes, has the exclusive on at first known case in which law enforcement used face idea to open a suspect's phone. However, the thing I found interesting in this article was this is now kind of status quo in search warrants that they're having the judge or they're writing it up in such a way that they can do this. It's in the actual search warrant that they will be asked to unlocked and they have to unlock their phone. I think the. Well, you can use a pen to, actually that's a really good question. Well, that's yeah, you know, it's clear cappella you. They can't compel. Coming out of your brain versus the theory using your face. That's the theory that you can, you know, 'cause they already taken fingerprints. They take care for DNA with or without your consent face ID's another one of them. So biometrics are not protected, but stuff in your mind is, but but I would like to point out, we're still waiting really for the definitive court case on this trip. So in theory, but I wouldn't. I wouldn't. You know, just a racer damn phone. You gotta do. The power was at the power and the volume Kia hold on s ego to kind of really annoy. And then that triggers the where you have to put your pin in and don't do it in New Zealand though. If you're going into New Zealand. "But do you have Bloomberg intelligence from Beijing Brubeck intelligence chief Asia economist, Tom all the insight into where crucial industry stand today, and where they may be heading next but intelligence senior analyst Jonathan Thais enhance your Wall Street acumen with Bloomberg intelligence, Zely, director view, research detergent, John Hartson, great to have you on the program. Bike intelligence only on Bloomberg radio. The Bloomberg radio dot com. Last week, the co creators of Instagram threw in the towel and Facebook just named its nuclear atom, low Seri was there he was vice president of product Instagram and has been with Facebook since two thousand eight where he joined as a member of the design team. He will now be tasked with running one of if not the company's most important product joining us now to discuss will protect Sarah fire who covers Facebook and Instagram so who is out of Missouri. He's obviously been there a long time. Is he Zach loyalist? Oh, absolutely. I mean, he is a person who has worked on one face with most important products newsfeed. And then he was brought into Instagram in the spring to be there director product and that sort of helped. Bring in some Facebook schools for Instagram and now he's going to take it over. But the way that this is managing your your seeing this picture of of Kevin's sister, Mike Krieger, and Adam Siri altogether announcing this as like a friendly transition. He says on his Instagram that he plans on establishing the same sort of values and focus on the communities, the founders have so after last week's news after we reported about all the tension that there's been in recent months between Instagram and Facebook that led to the founders departure. They are trying to explain today that not a lot is going to change although gradually it. Well, you have reported that most area was the most likely person to get this job. We've heard that employees internally have been really frustrated nervous. What's the feeling now? So people expected Missouri would take over this role. The main problem that employees are are facing right now is that there's not going. To be somebody with a founder level of authority to really advocate for what? Instagram's vision feature is going to be maybe fewer bold, bats that are just Instagram specific the battle that for example, earlier this year to launch Instagram TV, which is a competitor to Facebook, watch will integrate able to do things like that in the future. So, you know, this is something that like the title Adam series now head of Instagram. It's not CEO, it's not a Kevin system level title. And what are the executives here is that Instagram becomes more of a product division of Facebook and less of its own company within a company all right now onto other pressing news about Facebook that we've been digesting all weekend Facebook saying it was a quote, fisted attack that led to the hack of fifty million accounts involving three different bugs. These are the words of Facebook. Vice president Caroline Everson at an ad week panel Monday talking about the latest. And largest data breach in Facebook history. Fifty million accounts impacted as I said, unlike the more publicized Cambridge analytical data scandal. This was an actual hack one that Facebook has already notified the FBI about. So just what can the F B I do in such an instance to answer that we've got Mark Ray, managing director and head of digital investigations. And cyber defense at Nardello prior to that he was a special agent with the FBI cyber division investigating international cybercrime, Sarah. So with us, of course, Mark what do you imagine the FBI is actually doing here? And how are they liaising with Facebook? Well, probably one of the first things are doing is leveraging some of the pre established relationships that they had a Facebook. This would involve partnering in a way with Facebook or outside investigators were outside law firms that they brought in in an effort to try to preserve the evidence. One of the main reasons for bringing in law enforcement or working with the FBI no matter like this is to try to preserve perishable evidence that maybe on servers domestically or internationally. Now, what makes us different from the cage analytics scandal is in Cambridge Analytica. They were using publicly available information, generally and information that Facebook users, whether they really understood what they were consenting to had consented to be used. But here you have an actual attack on Facebook accounts. Which point these hackers had access to everything in your private profile. Why aren't we hearing the same level of outrage? There was sort of a tangible misstep in the Cambridge analytical situation, which is that humans decided it was totally fine for this developer to get. All this profile information from Facebook Caesar's face with basically said sure take it take information on these people and on their friends, and once you have it we trust you that you won't do anything bad with it. And of course, that developer pass it along to Cambridge Analytica, which then helped Donald Trump got elected in two thousand sixteen election. So there's that political intrigue there to in this case, the actual information that was breached it's much worse. This is not just public information. This is private information. This is your private post. This is the ability to post on your behalf. This is the log into every other app that has a Facebook logging connection. So it's it's much more serious. Mark. How serious would you say this? Breach is very significant as we heard earlier this was by far Facebook's largest data breach. But in the scale of of data breaches of all time. It's it's very large. And the reason is you mentioned earlier, it is a hack on like so many large data breaches the past where people are social engineered out of their credentials or other phishing attacks that may take advantage of duping them into providing their password. This is an attack. This seems to be a true hack as we heard this morning vulnerability was or multiple vulnerabilities were taken advantage of by the attacker to then surreptitiously take advantage of these people's accounts. So it's significant and it takes us a sophisticated attacker to pull off something having intimate knowledge of face Facebook's application now Facebook says we may never know who's behind this. But you know, what is your suspicion? Is this a nation state is this some criminal organization, and how are the consequences different depending on who actually perpetrated this attack? Right. I think based on the number of users involved here and the type of attack that we heard I think all investigators need to look at all options. That means certainly the criminal element activists could be an associated with this and also the nation states. And don't forget insiders as well. This someone had very intimate knowledge of this. So, but if you think about the amount of data that was available think back to the yahu hack and other large scale data breaches like this. It's quite a wealth of information. So you have to look at the motive or think about what motive would someone have someone can't take fifty million personal information of fifty million users have just go and sell it on the dark web today. There has to be much more ulterior motive, what do you imagine that motive could be? Well, certainly espionage is at the top of my list. If you look at the types of groups that would benefit from such information as we saw in the attack. And now that's public that it was attributed to Russian intelligence officers that were using it for targeting individuals both government officials in executives in private sector. Certainly there's a wealth of information on Facebook from fifty million users that could be used for espionage purposes. All right, Mark, and Cheryl, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sheryl Sandberg also targeted in this tax. So that's the thing to note, the the mention of an insider, that's definitely intriguing. All right. Sara Frier Bloomberg. Thanks so much in our tells Mark Ray, thank you as well. The FBI has a busy week this week partly coming up competition.

"For me. That's why I like to get him four one five two nine five K AFDC. Cavenaugh again Pandora is calling me I understand feeling that way on the other hand, it is one of the more consequential political stories of my lifetime. So we will be covering it in four again, we or more particularly you failed to please all the people all the time. Jack. Jack will be listening to a lot of Bork music. I guess on Spotify has they're coming up with playlists for your ancestry Bjork, Bork housing, Robert born music screeching musician that a friend who is so into your coming. Just love Bjork. And I've never I tried. She's really nice really really respected her opinion. Yeah. Could not get into it. Yeah. I like some. Plot of that. Yeah. That's what you like a two billion dollar building a two billion dollar building. And he can't even be used Jesus, California. Look at yourself in the mirror. I don't appreciate the J bomb. I I don't think most California has retained the capacity for self examination. I don't think realism is a piece that realism is like the grizzly bear. It's no longer known in California. No longer gallops across the plains. In the mountains. And this will lead us into another story. Facebook just banned a few of my buddies for having photos up with them doing the a okay sign. I wish I was joking. What the F O, man? A okay. And then got banned on Facebook which owns Instagram which has done this. Well, yeah. Before we get into that. The. Okay, thanks. So you can give the a okay sign that. But if you spread your fingers a little bit too to make like a w for white power. I mean steal second. No, no. That means you're a white supremacist on the other hand if now I can't do the. I kind of my fingers are kinda limp. So they make kind of a weird font w so now I'm self conscious about I can't figure out. How do I this is the way I do it is that okay? Nazi not fascist Nazi. Yeah. And it also means. I think you're an annus in in Mexico, but you actually get booted off Facebook for that. Okay. Well, yeah. In Instagram, which is a Facebook property. I did not know that. Oh, yeah. If Google ain't buying your Facebook is if you got more than like, twelve users and Instagram, which of course, is mostly known for celebrities showing their their Bubis and people on sexy vacations and beautiful places and climbing to the top of something and falling to their dad's. We learned the other day anyway. Has also become a giant marketplace for advertising illegal drugs. I had no idea of this. And it's the the interesting part of this and Elizabeth Dwoskin of the Washington Post wrote about this is great piece, but it's struggling to keep pace with with its own algorithms, and I'll explain why. But so you click around on Facebook, you've got all sorts of hashtag or Instagram. You got all sorts of hashtags, hashtag Oxy tag Percocet. Hashtag hash. Hashtag painkillers probably their hashtag, Oxycontin, many many examples. And and it's some people grappling with addiction lending each other support talking about their fight, but it's mostly drug dealers and people wanting to buy I don't know how we're going to work this out unless we just go wild west on this stuff. I don't know. How else you do it? So here's you understand. Why you don't want a business that is a platform for advertising drugs on the other hand. How do you stop it? Well, that's the problem. Look e- end up with someone looking through all the Instagram pictures who wants to kill themselves because they see all this terrible stuff. Like that Facebook person right now we talked about yesterday. Yeah. Quite a few Facebook before. But so if you follow the dealer account or even like, one of their posts, Instagram's algorithms, go to work as designed in this case by filling up your feed with posts for drugs suggesting other sellers to follow and introducing new hashtags like hashtag zander's for sale. And so this is mostly just amusing. But so you'll have ads in your feed from target chase Bank. Proctor and gamble. Appearing next to posts illegally selling pills. So Facebook's chief operating officer, Cheryl Sandberg set our company is firmly against such activity, but they can't quite figure out how to get ahead of their own algorithms and find and remove opioid listings. I'm not sure why. But I don't know enough about how the technology works. And I know people who are people who need to get around these rules are very good at getting around them. Well, right and spellings, and there's all kinds of individual instances of things on Instagram. Facebook Twitter that we would all most of us agree. Yeah. That probably shouldn't be on there. But as soon as you start down that road. It gets impossible very very quickly said Rick lane longtime technology policy adviser who helped push some legislation through congress this year, just as drug use rewires, the brain to create more of the substance social media platforms have designed their sites in such way that after a single search for an illicit drug the algorithm gets rewired to advertise drugs to the already vulnerable user forever. Then I wonder LAN do this. I'm going to get Oxy ads for the rest of my life. Yeah. From drug dealers, Scott, what's less, you spend so much time searching for golf equipment next month. It like pushes the trucks off the table. I guess. God. I had a perfect example. I don't remember what it is the other day that I bought something. And now I'm getting it's one of those things that you buy once in a lifetime or maybe once every twenty years, and I'm getting nonstop ads for right how long that lasts. Yeah. When I bought that would splitter. That's the way it was all of a sudden a lumberjack company or something like that. I mean. Most people never buy one one is enough. Yeah. Although you know, what I didn't buy the super crazy big powerful one because it's more expensive mostly. But now I've learned that splitting oak is no joke. How many times I've dense would nominee any times? I've regretted buying the next better one of something like once in my whole life. It's always turned out to be a good idea in my experience, you'd never regret buying quality as they say. Oh, yeah. Just one example fifty I could have done better without that. Yeah. I should have known. You got an log like data. I mean, it's a dense would Jack very. Thank you. I have a seventy seven ton log splitter. All right, it applies seven tons of pressure to oh, very, sharp wedge. And it just shuts down it won't it won't split that more than that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. What are you gonna do? You gonna buy a bigger one? Anybody wanna buy a seven ton logs? So says Caroline Everson. Who's with the Facebook? She's Facebook's vice president for global marketing solutions, we're not yet sophisticated enough to tease apart every post to see if it's trying to sell someone illegal drugs or they're taking zanex because they're stressed out. We'll not sophisticated enough or it's just completely.
