A highlight from "So You Sue The People That Took You In When You Were Homeless ? Michael Oher Should Be Ashamed
"Welcome to another edition of Convo Over Cigars. I'm your host, Derrick Andre Philemon. Let's talk about a story that is gaining a lot of attention. It's gaining a lot of traction, and I can see why. You guys probably remember the movie from 2009. It was an Oscar -winning film. It was called The Blind Side. It was a great football movie. I like football movies. I remember, I think it was Goldie Hawn. She played in the movie Wild Cats. I always loved that movie. But this particular movie was really, really good, and it was based on, a true story. This was about a rich family who basically adopted a young African -American man who was basically going through it. He was a homeless teen who was kind of being shifted through the school system and stuff like that. They basically adopted this kid, and it seemed like a great storyline. And I was like, why now in 2023 is this happening? It seems like now we're going to have to go back to the early 2000s and early 2000s and early 2000s and early 2000s. So, back in 2009, a movie was released called The Blind Side. It was the autobiographical story of a young man by the name of Michael Orr, played by Quentin, is it Aaron? Orr was a homeless black teen who was basically, he had drifted in and out of the school system for years. Then Leanne Tuohy, take in this young African -American man. They become his legal guardians. His tremendous size and protective instincts make him a formidable force on the football field. That's kind of like a synopsis of the movie, what it was about. Also with the help of his new family and devoted tutor, he realizes his potential as a student and football player. Now fast forward to 2023, Orr, a former Baltimore Ravens and Carolina Panthers tackle, alleged in a lawsuit that he never actually was adopted by the Tuohy family, not legally, as the blockbuster movie has basically shown. Orr claims he gave away the rights to his life story to 20th Century Fox back in 2007 without any payment whatsoever, and that he was missing profits from the John Lee Hancock 2009 film, which actually grows something like $309 million at the worldwide box office. And some are calling on actress Sandra Bullock, who portrayed Leanne Tuohy in the movie, which earned her an Academy Award to actually give back her Oscar. That's kind of a newer development in the story. So to be clear, Orr is saying that he was never legally adopted by this very affluent family, but they actually tricked him into a conservatorship and pocketed royalties from the book and the film, the movie, you know, affiliated with the movie Blind Side. This conservatorship, according to Sean Tuohy and his lawyer, Randy Fishman, was designed to make Orr a part of the family and also clear his path to Ole Miss University. Now, the NCAA would not have allowed him to be eligible immediately for the Rebels without it because the Tuohys were boosters of the program. Now, Michael Orr has claimed in court papers that the Tuohys tricked him into signing over his legal authority to use his name in business deals after he turned 18. The 37 -year -old claims they used their conservatorship to make millions in royalties from the 2009 film. The family's position is that Orr is basically trying to shake them down for about 15 million. He's basically trying to extort them out of money. That's what it looks like here. Why now? The timing is a little bit off. You wait until all these years later to basically say give me 15 million or I'm gonna basically throw dirt at your name. I don't know. It just seems to me that Michael Orr is in need of money and he's actually, this family did a great thing by adopting this kid and opening doors for him, obviously. And the thing that's really crazy about this story, the Tuohy family, these guys are extremely wealthy. They were wealthy before they adopted this young African -American kid. Very wealthy people and I'm not, I didn't necessarily look into their background, but they have tons of money. Multi -millionaire socialite type of people. So to come back all these years and basically say they use my likeness, my name to basically promote and endorse business deals and that kind of thing, I don't know if I'm buying it. I don't know if I'm buying it. I'm kind of waiting because I really don't know about this story. I've read so many different things. It could be true. Maybe they did swindle this kid. Maybe they did take advantage of his size and knowing that he would be a great athlete and you know, profit off of his name. I don't know. But my opinion, Michael Orr is just looking for a payday. That's my opinion. That's what I think. I'm going to basically be keeping an ear on these developments and we will do a part two on Convo Over Cigars. I'm your host, Derrick Andre Flemming. Alabama. So there you go, Bryce young goes number one overall to the Carolina Panthers. We'll see who goes number two. The Houston Texans could be CJ strut, the quarterback out of Ohio State, now the commanders have the number 16 overall pick. So there were about what 90 minutes away or so from the commanders and that selection, they could trade back, could trade up, will of course keep you posted on that. Now commissioner Roger Goodell also keeping us posted on the progress being made as far as the commander's ownership situation. He told ESPN he expects there could be an announcement of a transaction by middle or late May. Speaking of transactions, quarterback Lamar Jackson getting a 5 year deal to stay with Baltimore worth a reported $260 million, a $185 million guaranteed for Jackson the former MVP in 2019 as he's staying with the ravens. Nationals and the mets going at it right now as the Nats trail though at the Met's four to one and the top of the 5th inning from city field. "Carolina Panthers coach Frank Reich says he and general manager Scott fitter have agreed on which quarterback the team will select with the number one pick in the NFL Draft, Reich says the team won't announce who that is until Thursday night when the draft begins, the Panthers are choosing between Alabama's Bryce young, Ohio State CJ Stroud, Kentucky's will levis and Florida's Anthony Richardson in an effort to upgrade a quarterback position that has been in transition for the last 5 seasons. The trio of Baker Mayfield Sam darnold and PJ walker all started at quarterback during the Panthers 7 and ten campaign last season.

But if he scored as high or close or even higher than young, I think that kind of arguably puts in at first. No, and it's the new version of the wonder lick, but Anthony Richardson has got to learn to be consistent. And Bryce young is already like that. Back then and you know, it was little innuendos in the press conferences and things they said about Jordan. Okay. You know, in regards to them, Jordan not being able to beat them. Finally, they did. Okay. You know, but oh yeah, I mean, they talk about bird. Think about this. Think about who was it that Isaiah? Remember the quote he said about bird about if he wasn't a white guy? Yeah, if he was a black guy, be just another Ford. But that was exactly. I was there for that. Rodman and Isaiah, both said that. And disrespect? Yes, it did. Okay. And then we saw the end. We saw the end result. We saw every result. Some guys, you just ate that. You just want to leave alone. You know what I mean? And Larry Bird was one of Michael Jordan. But that's a competitive in nature to me with guys. I just don't like, I don't mind a guy going out and talking John. I don't mind it. Don't be disrespectful. Because LeBron James, I don't think you have to bow down to him. I think you have to compete. I think he respects that when the greatest players respect when guys come at it because that pushes them to another level. But if you're going to be disrespectful, then there's some things that come along with that too. And more importantly, Dan? You got to be able to back it up. You got to be able to back it up. You going to talk all of this the whole time. And came back it up. You know, it's just wasted breath. But you can see the light going on probably if you do it to Kobe or Mike. You know that you know what you've done. You've tugged on Superman's cape, and now is when you're saying, I got to hold up my end of the bargain here, because I know you got to. I know they're coming at me. Well, and it's a lot easier to talk to a 38 year old LeBron who's not the same kind of player, talking to talking junk to Mike when he was in with the wizard. Now he can still go off and give you 40. 50, but it's not the same as it was a young Mike in Chicago. When he could just had the full born energy to go out and just beat you not only offensively, but more important defensively really get up into you and change the game as well. So it's a lot easier to talk a little bit more smack to a 38 year old LeBron. Then it was when he was what was he when he dropped on Detroit when he was in Cleveland the first time when he had like 25 in the fourth quarter and was going off or what he did to Boston when he was in Miami. That's a whole different animal. Do you think Jordan would have load managed if he was playing now? But the personality thing with Kobe low manage. I would say I can't imagine. I can't imagine well, I say because Giannis low managed no. His name Lillard, no manage. No, the staff load managed no. Those guys, even though they brought up in this era, they're built a little bit different. They think a little bit different. You know what I mean? Kobe and Jordan, it was about the game. Now, the perspectives would have been different because they grew up in this era plane a different way. I don't think Michael Jordan would be the same Michael Jordan, we saw in the mid 90s. Why is that because Michael Jordan loved to get on that right block or that left block in post up? You don't see a lot of that. So Michael Jordan growing up as a young youth playing basketball, he wouldn't have been posting up as much because the game has changed around him. He would be more shooting on the perimeter pick and roll stuff like that. Not that he wouldn't be dynamic, but I just think mentally he would be a different kind of player because of the approach of how he grew up playing the game. Always great to visit with you. This is not a small gym and after Jordan is torched you for 40, and then you go to the line, you knock down a couple of free throws. I had a couple of really good games against me. I know. I think that that costume and the fact that commissioner was there and he wasn't going to leave the court and if I'm the commissioner. I think draymond forced his hand. Because if it was going to be close, he certainly didn't help himself. And he wasn't going to leave the floor in a timely fashion. You got to factor in his priors as somebody in the league office said to me yesterday, you have to. Because the word that was used is habitual with draymond green. Somebody I talked to yesterday. All right, so that's our poll question for our two. If you'd like to be part of the program, you can do so. The Panthers GM says he hasn't told anybody who they're taking with the number one overall pick. The Panthers general manager is Scott fitter and he made it clear yesterday that Bryce young has not been told that he will be the top pick of the NFL Draft. But that didn't stop the GM from the Carolina Panthers from saying this. Nutritionally we can do some things to educate him, we get him in the weight room. You can see when you really look at his lower body, his lower body has gotten bigger. He always put on a lot of mass down there. A lot of times quarterbacks don't want to lift upper body because you get a little bit bound up. But there are some things he's going to naturally put on size as he ages as well. Okay. Why are you talking about rice young? If you're not drafting him, why are you talking about it? Are you not sure if you're taking him? Then that leads you to believe that, you know, probably taking him. Now this is a TV show and I asked somebody yesterday with the NFL. I just said, how does the NFL kind of prevent this? Because you want, you know, you want that intrigue. You still want to keep that interest. Who's going to be number one? Who knows? And I was told that it's not like the commissioner of the league reaches out. The teams know that if you can keep it quiet, keep it quiet for as long as you want. Plus, it benefits the team in case somebody really wants Bryce young. Maybe they're fielding offers. I'm not quite sure. But I did laugh when the GM of the Carolina Panthers somehow had the idea that maybe we have some nutritional value that we can add to bright shook. Like Alabama's program, it's not division three. I mean, it's Alabama. They probably have better nutritional people at Alabama than you do the Carolina Panthers. But they somehow are going to got some nutrients we can give him. The weight room. Here's the thing. Rice young is going to weigh probably he'll be he'll vary about 6 or 7 pounds. Probably his entire career. He's not built like Kyler Murray or Russell Wilson, because they're lower body. They're thicker, lower bodies. He's just, he's more like Drew Brees. He's not going to get bigger, he is who he is. And so I find it interesting when they go, you know, probably put on about 7 pounds. I don't know if it matters. Like, do you go, Steph Curry? You know, if he weighed about four more pounds, but they did say that. Remember Kevin Durant? Oh, he can't survive. He can't survive. He doesn't even wait 200 pounds. And they're going to, they're going to break him in half. I go, have you watched

And I thought go into Carolina was the restart to his career that he needed. And I really believe that pairing him with Joe Brady. The young upstart offensive coordinator, the guy who I thought should deserve credit for making Joe burrow into a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback at LSU. I thought Joe Brady and Sam darnold together would be awesome and Sam would prove himself to be a franchise quarterback in Carolina. I literally said, my prediction is that at the end of the year, everyone will feel confident in him and happy they have Sam on their football team. Do you feel that way? And I just knew it was a calling and time for me to go home. I'm gonna hold you kids. So I about three boys. Two girls from 12 to 3 and Steve. Actually, right now, I'm out sitting in my car because the only place to find a quiet time every 30 I'm in my car. I totally get that. So are you. Are you back here now? Have you relieved? Relocated? Are you still out of New York? I'm so I'm actually I'm in South Bend, Indiana State, Notre Dame and I would I would travel to New York. So there are plans for that to make our way back to the Chicago Land area. In June, you mentioned that you were fundraiser, which is a big part of running a private school. Catholic All boys school, the oldest one still up and running in Chicago. What do you see? Is your mission when you arrive for next fall? Now, for sure. I'm just I'm excited to have an impact on these boys lives and you know, fundraising will definitely be a big part of it. Right. We have a great story of how a great tradition and we have great benefactors Who would be who are willing to get back to support these young boys. So I'm super excited. Um, have a great team around me. They just eager to get started. And what is that one of the boys doing now? Are they in clashes? That hybrid? Are they at home? Do you know So, Yeah, they go two days a week. There, either the blue or green, a green and gold group. They go two days a week, and some do remote learning if they choose, they, you know, chose to go down about I'm sure this will be your early going in Education administration and that you picked quite a challenging time to do it. Not for sure. But I said, I know I have a great team around me a great board and just a ton of support. So I'm totally confident that and hopefully cold it passes here, but As we've all seen. The Catholic schools have even thrived. You know during this pandemic, so this is why I said, honored, grateful, thankful, and I haven't done anything yet, but I'm eager to get going and Do the best I can to take patch. Were you a good student in Was a good student. I was a 39 average. And you know I didn't have the A C T to get in Notre Dame football help me on that side of things, but I enjoyed school and I great faculty and staff and leadership. It's a patch and People is what makes a pat special and I just want all the parents to go. That shaped patch is special because of the people and but it's under challenge, right? I mean, I think you're right in that A lot of the profile schools have done well during covert because The public schools have been shut down, but, you know, overall pup. Private schools have been closing and you know it's it's more of a challenge now than it's been in a long, long time. I'll. For sure, I mean, the cost of education has gone up. You know, we see that even at the University of Notre Dame, but especially at the high school level grade school level. It's hard for these parents to make that sacrifice and pay the tuition and that's where fundraising is gonna come into play. You know, our goal is to increase emissions. In enrollment into lower the cost education. And I'm gonna do everything I can to make that possible. Tell me about single sex education, too, Because I got a buddy is a big proponent of that. That's fewer and fewer schools offering that as well. How do you think that benefits the kids there? All right. Well, I'll tell you, I'll just go on my own experience. I loved it. You know, you take away the distractions. You build the brotherhood like no other, Um and you're able to focus on the task at hand. You know whether that's in the classroom or on the athletic field in the arts, whatever you're interested in Distractions really go away and you just felt a special bond. All right, then. Listen, If I was told that the president of my Catholic high school was a former NFL player, I would be on the straight and narrow, so I don't think discipline is gonna be a problem. Uh, we're gonna definitely practice will be preaching. I said we're gonna We're gonna do our best to take these boys and make him young man and do it the right way to go in and feed those kids.
