"More than one or two of those games will could've shot of foul shot decently, but but it was this an exceptional team. As you said, right? And I was just very fortunate coming out of college. There you are. And we end up winning the championship next year. And you don't realize at that age. Lucky you were and it doesn't come that easy. And that was the last championship. Of course, the trade of Chamberlain One of the worst things that happened to the French. It's the worst thing that has happened to the franchise. Let's talk about wilt a little bit because he's sittin on inspiring a mythical figure. How did you How did you relate him? What did you think of him at first? How did he treat you? What was it like playing with them? Give us a little bit of your thoughts of being around, you know, maybe the most legendary figure in this sport. You know, before we got on the phone I was thinking about a Chamberlain was playing today. Can you see how they're up and down the court? In many cases, the first guy, of course half court is shooting the ball. The world would not tolerate that. I promise you if you wanted him to put Heywood have held the ball. After getting the rebound and handed to the guard. So everybody would get to the other end of the court, and then the ball would be thrown into him. He would control that, But I got along great. We will. He was so special. That is a player. You know greatness. No, it's done what he did. He forced the extension. Area. That you know went from, I think 68 10 feet and then you had there was an out of bounds play, you were able to throw the ball over the top of the backboard. And you know, under Lee out of bounds, and of course, he would just catch it inducted if that was employed during that period of time, so he had a great impact on changing the rules. Trying to make it fair for other players as well. But, uh, exceptionally bright, Probably the only player I really remember that early that's literally when he retired, never had to work another day in his life because he invested His money so wisely. To this day with Steve coasted in Barba Lluis. Well, sister. We started the Chamberlain Foundation and we have now given out Close to 80 scholarships to kids in the Philadelphia area. So his legacy lives on. And I just think that it was this a great honor looking back to about the opportunity. Play with him against them and be able to call him a friend. Well, he certainly fits the description of larger than life in every sense of the word, Really, But you know, I you think And you mentioned about that There was a smaller leg then. So the Sixers and the Celtics played a lot of games. Ah, what was it like to be part of that rivalry? And what was it like to be part to be up close and personal with with the Wilt Chamberlain Bill Russell rivalry, which to me still ranks as one of the great personal rivalries in the history of sport. I agree with you right? And they literally the two of them tired. The MBA during that period of time. It just seemed like it was automatic. Sunday. We'd be playing in Boston Garden, and it was The advertising was Russell against Chamberlain. And it was also the Celtics and 76 they were They were very good friends, by the way. But it was just a great thrill and Crazy fans in those days I can remember. People throwing eggs from the top level of the Boston Garden. And I think the direction was aimed at while he Jones and ended up getting married six free right in the back and literally knocked him flat on the floor. And then the situation in Philadelphia in the old convention hall. Someone threw a bear can And they forgot to take the beer out of the can and cracked somebody's skull sitting, it's scorerstable. So it was quite exciting and Like you said. You know that and beating. I never one quick World story. I'll never forget when we did beat them in the playoffs, And that was the first time they had lost in Eight and nine years, maybe 10 years they had one consecutive championships. And to say we were celebrating afterwards of the excitement of Eating them and knowing you're going to want to play the Warriors. It was half an hour and then all of a sudden wilt Said. Hey, we're not finished yet, And it was just dead silence in the locker room if he says that I'm going to fast forward a little bit because we have so much ground to cover 1972. You jump to the A. B A, which was a fun and viable lead in those days going to the Carolina Cougars back to Carolina. Billy what precipitated that was that all about contract? Yes. Um, I was making 40 thing around 40,000 year and I was First team all pro and I went. I tell you what I yes, the six years that they could maybe $90,000 a year and they said no. And I remember that the Carolina Cougars were offering me more than three times that amount to come and play. And I never get driving down the Jersey Shore to tell Jack Ramsey You know that I was going to sign the deal. With the Carolina Cougars and The gentleman. He always wass that he understood completely why I was doing it and So I spent a year and 1/2 the Cougars before I had had some kidney operations. And the six years of course, at that time the team was I guess the only guys left from the great team. The championship team were probably youand. How Andi and you kind of saw the team was the team was going The team was certainly regressing. So I guess that the idea of gone to the other league and playing for Larry Brown, who's your old who's your old teammate in college, probably was pretty appealing. Itwas. I forgot that part, too, knowing that the team there wasn't any real chance of winning the conference or moving on in the play offs. That was pretty It's staring you right in the face, So it was attractive. I'm going back to an area that I was very familiar with. My wife is from Greensboro. And so it was exciting time and by the way, I love playing the Abia. There was some great players, including Julia Survey that was there. George Durban. Hey, what I think was around. Then there were Because it would be a be a They were smart. They went and got the kids at a college early, which we're seeing now and beating the MBA to these players before they got to their senior year. Yet for people who don't know people, basketball fans who are too young to know in these days, its most fans just speak a little bit about how the baby was different in style and It was a whole other product. You know when the interesting thing is the N B A has become the Abia. Yeah, Um, the three point line. Obviously, you know, this temple of the game was more upbeat. And what are you seeing today? In the MBA, it's run and gun. And this is what people like. It's entertainment, and I understand that completely. But it's amazing the impact the Ended up having on the MBA. Well, I take it we're going to take a quick break. Come back for the second half is our delight to be talking a Billy Cunningham, Hall of Famer Great player Great coach for the 76 years we're going to start moving in his coaches coaching career. "When it came to name changes, my favorite is the Memphis team so it went from being the New Orleans buccaneers to the Memphis pros to the Memphis towns. Now. What's Tam? You might wonder well. That is an acronym. Acronym for Tennessee. Arkansas and Mississippi am and their logo was a Tama shandor style had now that was in the colors, the Oakland A.'s so green and yellow and white, then became the memphis sounds they were part owned by Isaac. Hayes fun back, and it was a musical reference to the soul music, coming out of the city in the sixties and seventies you also had the Oakland Oaks, which became the Washington, capitals would became the Virginia squires. The Denver rockets became the Denver Nuggets which exist now. New Jersey. Americans became the York Nets, which then later became the New Jersey Nets, which are now the Brooklyn Nets. The Pittsburgh. Pipers became the Pittsburgh. condors The Dallas. chaparrals became the San Antonio Spurs the San Diego conquistadors speaking of problematic games. became the San Diego sails and the Houston Mavericks moved to Carolina became the Carolina cougars, and then moved to become the spirits of Saint Louis, which is a great thirty for thirty about how they negotiated and at the merger of the Aba in the NBA, they were able to get a permanent cut of all NBA TV revenue in perpetuity, in exchange for not existing anymore, and that was the lineage of the Saint. Louis the spirits of St Louis so of those twenty four name changes only nine. Nine were of the Washington. Variety without an accompanying franchise relocation so basketball you know when when they change their names. It's because they've changed to a new city most of the of the time whereas in baseball and especially football, it's more just things happen new owner, or you've had a racist team name for a long time now, but sometimes not, but I think basketball I think. Basketball being notable for the teams that moved and didn't change their names, and their names make no sense like the Lakers. There's UTAH. Are they talking about stover? And also there are no grizzly bears anywhere near Memphis. Anywhere near. Legal. That's a fault you can take with these ones that like we've been talking about teams that changed names, but the arguably yeah, the ones that didn't change. Changed names to to just make any sense geographically. Or for their new locale, so those are just you know there's a long history long lineage of teams changing their names that Washington will now join. Not all of them were done back. Most of them were not done to avoid you know long-held problematic names, but mainly because of other very weird and assorted reasons but this will join that, so it's. It's not that odd for all the people saying like Oh. We've been known as this team name for a long time, and you know this and the other. Teams changed their names all the time in sports. Yeah, it doesn't need to be that big of a deal. And in fact, maybe we should take time to change problematic names, but just dumb named to I had also forgotten before we talked about this last week. That Stanford University of Stanford had been the Indians until as recently as nineteen seventy two..

"Say, ninety four WIP on your smart. Speaker, let's go back to your childhood childhood child child child. I don't know what to accept today is the seventy six birthday kind of ironic. The seventy six birthday one of my all time. Favorite seventy Sixers. And the reason why I'm going back to my childhood childhood childhood is because a real young pup when Billy Cunningham the kangaroo kid was in his Lookie season. For the Sixers. And of course, he was part of that world championship six thirteen with wilt, and how Grier and all that he was an ultimate six man for a while before it became a starter. He was so much fun. The watch there wasn't a shoddy wouldn't take the wasn't. I don't think he ever took a shot in his life where he didn't take. He got fails. Got nobody could complain to the ref like Billy Cunningham could a tough guy. I've met him a couple of times. I can't say he's a bad guy, but tough guy from book booklet and but oh my God. What a player what a player he was spent. All of his NBA career with the Sixers took some time off. To play with. The Carolina Cougars before he made boop. Who bucks before he came back to the Sixers. And then, of course, last I looked. The last world championship at the Philadelphia seventy Sixers one who's dead coaching team own. That would be one. Billy cunningham. So I'm a massive Billy Cunningham fan, but away went to razzmatazz high, which is where Barbra Streisand graduated from as well. Pretty famous high school there in, in Brooklyn. He went to North Carolina. For its college bowl where he wants to grab a record twenty seven. We bounds in one game against Clemson. Also at the time said a single gain North Carolina scoring record with a forty eight points against two lane. The announced standing college career as well. As well as a whole of fame career as an NBA player, and he's in the college Basketball Hall of fame is well. It's as the years have gone by. And I saw almost all Billy Cunningham, NBA career. I'm old enough to be able to say done that yet. I image to comes to my mind when I think of Billy Cunningham is as a coach. Isn't that odd with Moses Dr J? Moat cheeks edgy. Tony. Yeah. I think him maybe championship, but he wanted championship is a player as well. So you remember that. But that's a God when they're doing that. I'm like, twelve TV's. Okay. Thanks, took you four twenty seven. Took you while for you. I age joke of the night, which lately seems to be coming at me from all sides match. It's me with them. Angelina caisley. Does how am I ninety? Put up these nitwits down here, anyway. It's Billy Cunningham spurt day, and he's one of my all time favorite. Sixers also did very well and travel agency business. He's a very, very slick businessman. I know he got other offers to come back to the Sixers over the years. But apparently was never never came close to accept in one of them. And the as fifty anniversary all time team. Yeah, he's in every hall of fame you can get in and pretty damn good coach as well. There were a lot of heart breaks for Billy Cunningham as a coach came close. Oh my God. You're at the year to year before they finally went over to top. But the Kangoo kid Billy Cunningham and bought away. I've seen a couple birthdays, but I'm now going with the one that I've seen a couple of times, turning seventy six years old today. The great Billy Cunningham. Let's say I do Adine. On ninety four w. You gotta kind. Hey, love your show. Thanks. Your guy. Came. It was your show or another show. Like listen to the all the time. "Starters right into the up down report guys. According to multiple reports the grizzlies have kicked the tires on a number of deals involving moving Marcus all Steve Cuyler says the blazers have made an aggressive offer the Hornets light have a realistic chance at trying to land. And then there's this hypothetical straight up one for one trait. Lurk assault to Detroit for Andre Drummond center for center here. Guys, are you up down on this one trading vessel for drumming? What do you think Louis down? Okay. We got a bit of everything wants to start who that's going. I don't understand this from the business perspective. They're getting a decade older. They're seven games under five hundred. This is a championship tight move for team. That's outside of the the playoff picture. They need a guard. Blake Griffin does absolutely everything on this. They don't even know their center look at the template him and Chris Paul worked. But now he has to do absolutely everything the two big scenario. It's not a good idea. Get a guard, but at least Manca soul can shoot a little bit more which Andre Drummond conso. He can spread the flow of maybe point blank to come back in. But I just don't really think it moves the needle that much full the pistons. I think they need to change a few other don't need to move the needle all that much though. They just need to make the playoffs. That's been forever for the pistons. Mark assault can make plays like you're saying he constructs the a little and he will get them organized on defense. They'll tell people where to stand what they should be doing and making sure they play hard all the time. I think it changes scenery. We'll be great for Marcus. All it's probably not the best fit Blake Griffin and Marcus all. But when you're looking for players out there, you gotta take what you can get one about the grizzlies side of things in getting a guy like Andre Drummond back for a franchise icon in Kosovo. I gotta worry about. Jaren Jackson junior not playing center with hundred drumming there. I I would just like to explore what he can do. We just don't know. He plays a lot forty plays a little bit of center, but Andre Drummond would just limit him a little bit. I mean, you kind of stunt Jerry Jackson jury he could be five for a long time. So it sounds like you think cuddly if anyone's coming for the grizzly should go to go to the business. Yeah. All right, next one guys we talked about the rising stars rosters a little earlier in the show. But let's get your thoughts on the jerseys. They're gonna be Rockin. These are inspired, by Charlotte's basketball roots. These rising stars Younis put a twist on the jerseys worn by the ABA Carolina Cougars in the sixties and the seventies. Team. USA gets the light blue the world has sort of a charcoal guys are up or down on these new rising stars jerseys up. I think they didn't need to over think this too much a little bit of historical significance. Are they are they better than the actual all star game jerseys? No, I don't know. What do you think? There's two things you can always sell me on our baby.

"I mean, I had a little more handles than that, but I was okay team is it existed when we were kids that don't exist anymore, like there's no more jazz and I only know the jazz, the Justice exists, but not in Utah. No, they're still in Utah. They used to be New Orleans and now they're in New Orleans, something called the Hornets now that used to be the Charlotte the. Okay. So this confuses e here we go dude. Okay. So is the Charlotte Hornets beating baseball? So the Charlotte Hornets moved to New Orleans and there the New Orleans Hornets. Okay. Then they decided to give a team to replace Charlotte, the old team in Charlotte, what? Bob? Bob cat. Okay. So then the New Orleans team decided to change their name from the Hornets to the pelicans to pelicans yet. The worst fucking team. The worst name. And then what did the Bob cats do chooser name to the Hornets get the fuck outta here. So was Charlottesville appellate so they're still pelicans in New Orleans and the Charlotte got the Hornets back and but but the jazz went back to Utah yet in the jazz in Utah. Jazz have been in Utah for like since like. The early eighties seventies knows cool team the SuperSonics Dade cool. I like their colors. They don't just anything exist anymore. Now that the Oklahoma City thunder, Oklahoma City is nowhere near Seattle. I know you mean that team became the Oklahoma City. They moved the, they picked up the entire team. I've never from the arena and they moved them. There's a whole documentary that you can watch about about moving. Yeah, it's only about an hour or so, and just kind of have the kind of like how the whole city got screwed over. I think their first in line at they're gonna add another team to the NBA, Seattle's on the top of the list which they should because they're thirty teams in the NBA, but sixteen of the make the playoffs which means more than half the league makes not fun. Yes. So it should be at the very least thirty two teams. Did you get the macaque yet? I think that it happened. I would whenever I play those things. Yeah, I think onyx, yeah, I played the Sonics looking whenever I was colors, man, I had they were. They were fucking Payton and Kemp and all that kind of stuff. Looking young. I, I remember vividly when the NFL added the Panthers and the Jaguars and did really well. They both did really well, and here's a little anecdote I had pox. This was must have been. So that had time stamped it. I got NFL pogs all thirty two teams right when the expansion happened. And originally they were the Carolina Cougars really. They changed the name before the season started. Well, actually, that was the name of the ABA team in the seventies the basketball team. Yet the basketball team, the ABA was called the Carolina Cougars. I remember that because that was the name of my fantasy basketball. You ever see the Globetrotters live? No, I haven't had the pleasure to watch those load. I was a kid. I used to think it was the most hilarious thing ever multiple times. It is quite a show guess. I know those guys are great. They used to come to my camp and shit. Sometimes you'd be like, oh, Globetrotters here got to the point where you'll ruled rose. I've seen this. Would you do steal the ball from that guy and then take off and then jump on the top of the net? Yeah, we know curly, Joe curly, Joe, like what's in the book it is it confetti meadow lurk. What have you done for lately? Mr.. Middle oyster. Mr.. Mr. lemon Mr. meadow lark lemon. No, I used to watch them on TV. It's a Simpson's bit much. I thought the generals were do. Bet on the on the generals Yvette, heavy on the general's. Other sports had that yet. You don't really see like a weird exhibition team like that. Like in the leg keystone, cops football team. Yeah, exactly. Keep the balls all greasy and it keeps slipping out. Benny hill was playing while they're playing football. I think we thought of a new business idea. I all right. Well, you know what? I have an offensive guard right here, which who me you mean you mean size? It highest goes most improved player. Nine thousand nine hundred eighty. Look at you look at you and also what did you play on defense? It'll linebacker. Wow, God. I wasn't big. Forgetting Brian Urlacher..
