Fresh update on "carolina" discussed on Patriots Beat
"Know guys who are late risers might be a little lower like, you know, you have whereas here all the way down here Des with Patrick but this is the consensus right now is how these kind of how the way back up. So the only other day three guy I wanted to mention was that guy Smith from South Carolina, like I think that he had a fantastic Senior Bowl week the guy that nobody could come back in one-on-ones and down in Mobil even the Patriots really put as much emphasis on the Senior Bowl as they have in years past. He was somebody that was as clear as day as a demon in the slot, you know, just thought absolutely handful. He played really well in the game too. So I used a last name that kind of a day three flyer if you will, you know, someone that maybe that they can get in the 4th of the fifth ground. She should I submit that from South Carolina is a good one as well. So that that I think is a pretty good summation of the slot receivers in the draft. It's such a deep slot receiver draft. I mean, Nico Collins call Cornell Powell. Say the top of the driver jamarr Chase terrorists Marshall from LSU. Jonathan Adams. Yeah, they're Jonathan Adams later on the draft. There are some pure X's as well, but it's definitely more heavily geared toward the slot guys few more questions that I wanted to get to hear from somebody asking about next year's quarterback class and I don't want to talk about next year's quarterback class yet because I want to make a point to mention. We cannot properly forecast next year's quarterback class until the fall season because so many guys in recent memory Zach Wilson Joel pineiro Kyler Murray Baker Mayfield go right on down the line of players that Mac Jones even to a degree right? We're projected third-round pigs fourth-round picks. We don't really like this song I athlete but not a quarterback, you know, all these types of things being thrown out the year before they go out. They win Heisman Trophy the next offseason and the next season in the fall and the narrative off. Completely shifts on that player. So I have a really tough time of projecting 2022 quarterbacks right now because I mean I have the big board up there the consensus before you can put it up but I'm just saying from a from a game analysis standpoint to me like we don't know. I really like Spencer Rattler. I think he's going to be a good player too. I think Desmond Ryder's are really interesting Prospect as well. And I just thought through this born, you know, there was a couple of guys like Carson strong maybe could have a big year. I know that there are some love for him Tanner Morgan Minnesota, maybe could fabricate Michael Panic actually Michael panics, I think could be a really good player. He tore his ACL last year. So it's going to be really interesting to see how he bounces back. But yeah, you're right it the Quarterback board develops. So bizarrely in very very late developing board. Usually we can project other positions at this point of who's going to be sort of the chase young who's going to be the Micah Parsons, you know, who's going to be that guy like we knew Mike apart..

Thank you so first of all. Tell me a little bit about yourselves. How did you get interested in journalism. And and how you ended up at your current roles into respective colleges chrissy. Why don't you go first. Well i actually started the daily turkey alami. Unc grad and. I worked on the job as the student. And actually erica was the student editor when i came back to be the director so i've always been on the business side and i love my experience in college so much that i took my j. school degree and i stayed in college media so eleven years at the daily tar heel a few other things in between. Wet Notes - 4-9-21
"This is wet notes here scuba shock radio for april ninth two thousand and twenty one first up today. I'd like to give you an update on new netflix. Documentary see spiracy. You might recall that. I introduced you to this film in a previous segment of wet notes. Well it did premiere on netflix's advertised. And i had a chance to watch. She spiracy a couple of weeks ago. The film is eighty nine minutes long and it can be captivating and controversial. Like i said this is certainly raising a great deal controversy especially as it relates to sustainable seafood and fishing. There's a couple of organizations that they called out into spiracy earth island institute and the marine stewardship council actually marine stewardship council issued a response on their website within days of the premier and every day. I see something more coming out related to the controversy. But i encourage you to watch the film and then decide for yourself about what it is saying like. I said lots of controversy. That's spiracy on net flicks now. Here's something that. I found really interesting. I came across an article that talked about how scientists are using thin wales to map out what lies beneath the sea floor. Now according to to seismologists vaclav kina from the czech academy in prague and john nab elec of oregon state university in corvallis oregon the song of the fin. Whales are loud enough to penetrate the earth's crust and revealed deep structures. I guess they have a network of fifty four bottomed size meter seismometers that the tech sound waves traveling through the ground and they picked up the of whales as they were passing by. Now they have a one hundred and eighty nine decibels song and that song can last from two and a half to five hours as they did more analysis they were able to map the underlying rock structures. According to these guys this is just as effective as those air cannons that are polluting the ocean with all that noise how practical this is yet to be seen. But you've gotta admit it is interesting. Now here's an update on the lectured aluminum tanks situation. You might recall back at the end of february. I told you about luxembourg Decision to exit the aluminum tank business and that they were looking to sell their plants in the us and the uk more. Here's some good news. Metal impact out of elk grove village in illinois is acquiring the graham north carolina luxembourg cylinder plant metal impact is no stranger to scuba tank business. They've been around since nineteen fifty nine and in two thousand fourteen. They purchase worthington. Aluminum cylinders has been providing aluminum scuba tanks to excess scuba and see pearls for a number of years. We've got quite a few from excess scuba over the past couple of years and so we're pretty familiar with metal impacts. This is some good news for the. Us aluminum Scuba tank supply chain. There's absolutely no doubt that. The pandemic has had a dramatic impact on the scuba industry. But i guess it's not all bad news if you happen to be in the right place and it seems that hawaii is those right places especially for new diver certifications. There's a recent article in scuba diving magazine. Titled more hawaiians getting certified than before the pandemic turns out that even though the travel has been restricted to and from the islands more locals are turning to scuba aloha scuba on awad who had reported a one hundred and twenty percent increase in new diver certifications. In two thousand and twenty. They went from twenty seven in two thousand and nineteen to eighty three in two thousand and twenty spurred by whole families going for they're open water certification with some great diving. It certainly makes sense to mask up and dive in our aloha state. Last week i was trying to see if the ocean based climate solutions act of two thousand and twenty was being introduced in this session of congress. Well no update on that yet but i did come across something very interesting. There is a house select committee on the climate crisis now. This committee was created during the one hundred sixteenth congress. That was the last one so it hasn't been around long. But they did produce a climate action plan of two thousand twenty. And that's called the congressional action plan for a clean energy economy and a healthy resilient and just america committee is chaired by representative. Kathy castor from florida and the ranking chair is representative garrett graves from louisiana now. I watched their organizing meeting from march nineteenth. Let's say there's just a little bit of difference on the ideas of how to approach In the approaches in making the us carbon zero by two thousand fifty but as representative castor stated. It's time to turn recommendations into policy. Now i'll be tracking our actions and keep you updated here and finally you might recall. Last year the uss bonham rashard an eight hundred forty four foot long and fibia assault ship burned out of control for five days. Now that was in san diego california. But now senator. Marco rubio from florida is proposing that the ship be used to create an artificial reef down in florida little bit of background. The navy did some cost analysis On what it would take to restore the ship to operational status an estimated that that would be somewhere between two point. Five and three point five billion dollars but the cost to decommission and scrap the bonham rashard would be about thirty million dollars. Senator rubio didn't provide any details on where the ship might be sunk and be become an artificial reef but he did say that it could be done for less than thirty million dollars to scrap the ship. This word Happened it would be. We'll keep an eye on it and see where it goes. Fingers crossed that will have another artificial reef down in florida. Something that big to dive on. Well that's it for this installment of wet notes for april ninth. Two thousand and twenty
How Do Belly Buttons Work?
"Do you think the reason that you have in any or an outy. Bellybutton has something to do with the way that your milk cord was cut and tied when you were born. Come on be honest. The persistence of the any. Audi meth is exhibit a. But we don't know jack about our belly buttons your belly. Button is indeed the leftover remnant of what was once the umbilical cord The rope light connection between you and your birth parent which supplied all of your nutrients and oxygen when you were in the womb. When you were born someone helping with the birth likely cut. The bulk corridor a couple of inches. Away from your belly and clamped off the remaining section. There's no tying involved once it's clamped the small section of umbilical cord dries up and falls off in about a week. A what's left is the umbilical commonly known as the belly button and the shape and size of the bellybutton depends entirely on the way to your skin. Heels after the cord falls off. If you have an audi it's likely due to a mild umbilical hernia or slide infection at the site. "carolina" Discussed on The Kevin Sheehan Show
"This winter bet with the best bet with mybookie Smell test was five one in one last week so it was a really good week. If you didn't hear my smell test on radio consider yourself fortunate. Because i gave out the vikings yesterday plus the seven. That didn't work out. What a performance by alvin kamara And the saints yesterday against truly one of the worst defenses in the league. I know i know kirk cousins fault that they lost the game yesterday but that was the first time on the vikings this year either for them or against them. That i lost was five and going into Yesterday on games involving minnesota this year. And then i lost yesterday so i'm off to an owen one start. I like the forty niners today now. I don't like them as much right. Now as i did on friday the lines moving ahead but i think you'll get some good the lines at six and a half on friday when i gave it out on friday when i get one wednesday or thursday whatever it was i gave it out that i had my smell test on radio I gave out the forty niners plus five said. That's the number i will stick with. You're gonna get it six and a half or so today by that half point get it to seven i do like the niners the public's all over all over the arizona cardinals today Cardinals with a good chance now. to draw nearer A playoff clinching win. I think they clinched to there. Maybe the bears still are alive. but arizona gets pretty close to a playoff spot with a wind today over san francisco. I like the forty niners. Plus the points tomorrow I like the panthers now. And when i gave this out the other day was plus two and a half. You're going to get plus one. I know it's hard for many of you to play that. Look i don't wanna. I don't want this one to work. I want washington to win the game. But the panthers totally fit into the smell test criteria in fact Washington right now. Is the biggest public play on the board tomorrow. And i mentioned this in years past one of the best smell test Setups is late in the season when a team that's playing for nothing is playing a team that has to win or that needs to win Take that team. That's playing for nothing getting points. More often than not especially when it reeks like this one at gist. A point washington minus one. The panthers are in the smell test plus the one. I like denver tomorrow. Plus the three against the chargers a lot of people like the chargers coming off. Their win over the raiders. Last week I liked the rams who lost the jets and are getting a point and a half at seattle. Public loves the seahawks to really damage The rams division hopes with a win tomorrow. I'll take the rams to bounce back. Plus the one and a half. The steelers have been awful. Recently they are getting a mere point and a half at home against indy. I'll take the steelers to bounce back I like the jets plus nine and a half plus ten at home against cleveland. they've been very competitive They obviously won their first game much to the dismay of jet fans last week. I like the jets plus the nine and a half and i like the cowboys to beat the eagles tomorrow. The public really likes philly lang The two two and a half might be up to three at this point. I'll take dallas Plus the points against the eagles that is the smell test for the week. You missed out. A minnesota hopefully Which was a loser. I like the niners. Panthers broncos rams steelers jets and cowboys anyway that's it Have a great rest of the day. Great rest of the weekend. I'll be back on monday with cooley to recap the skins panther's game and the rest of your nfl sunday..

"We did not do a show on thursday. We did not have a chance to on the podcast. Follow up on. Ron rivera's presser from wednesday. Where he announced that he took away. Dwayne haskins captain see he find wayne haskins forty thousand dollars but dwayne haskins was going to be his starting quarterback. If alex smith couldn't go tomorrow and the backup. If alex smith could go a lot of you wanted him cut or released right away bottom line twain. Haskins is still here because there's a division at stake in the other quarterback options. If smith is healthy aren't good enough. Stephen montez taylor heineke their last resort. Guys there guys that Ron rivera and scott. Turner felt like didn't give them a chance to win. A division ron. Rivera chose the other fifty two players in the other staff members and their best interests over some sort of emphatic culture signal. Culture change signalled that he was not going to deprive the rest of his team of the postseason. For a mistake. They did not make. I don't have an issue with any of it. You know. I trust in ron rivera. At this point. I mean what choice do i have. Other than trusting. Nobody which you know is reasonable. I guess considering the teams to decade history under the current ownership. But i liked ron rivera before. They hired him. I the way. This team has responded and grown in his first year. I m as optimistic about the team's future. As i've been in a long time and it's partly due to the talent on defense and even some of the talent on offense but it's mostly due to rivera. I feel like there's a good coach and leader in that position for the first time in years. So on this decision. To keep dwayne as a part of this thing. Despite the fact that dwayne attended a large gathering ovid nineteen protocol breaking event that included a stripper. Strippers strippers plural That was you know without a doubt. A selfish immature bad decision dumb decision and by the way to allow photos of it and allow people to put it out on instagram. I mean how stupid was that whole thing. I don't think that dwayne haskins will be on this roster and i think pudding the decision on haskins Off for a month or so so that you don't deprive the other fifty two players in your locker room and staff members. I don't think that that's a horrible culture impacting decision. I trust ron rivera. He's built up some equity with me here Over the last couple of months you know there are examples. Like not putting up with the inner trent williams situation or the quinton dunbar switch situation and moving on and moving on decisively from those two. They're bigger decisions. Like moving on from haskins early on when it became apparent to him and turner that kyle out kyle. And and or alex smith would give them a better chance to be a competitive outfit offensively And then you know. The overall continued improvement of this team is the season's gone on when it could have and would have in the past gone south in a hurry at one in five or two in seven. Say whatever you want about. The division philly in dallas haven't played as well as washington has the giants haven't played as well as washington has washington's gotten better and smarter and tougher as the season's gone along that's made an impression on me. He's done that everywhere he's been. You know the this decision that he was faced with really was to me about two things right. It was first of all you know. You can't put dwayne out. There is if he's putting anybody at risk healthwise you know and i would have to think that the team. That's been as good as any team in the league. As successful as any in the league at keeping covert added there. You know out of their sphere for nearly an entire season you know. I would assume they know what they're doing and in consultation with the league that you know by bringing dwayne back. They didn't put an entire team at risk of getting infected. I have to think that that's probably their belief you know and that it's not going to impact the end of the end of the nfl season. Remember the league wouldn't allow them to do this if the end of the nfl season in the nfc east could be impacted by a player infecting other players. So they had to consider that and then of course it's the culture culture culture conversation. Did he take into account the thing that he's referred to over one hundred times since he got the job That's where i would say you know he did take the path of we're going to win now and i'm not going to deprive the other fifty two men in the locker room Over maybe some sort of Defining long-term culture statement again. I'm fine with what he did. I know that many of you disagree and many of you agree. It's a. It's a subject that i took thirty minutes worth of calls on the radio. Show the other day and people were really split on this but i am fine with a pragmatic approach. That doesn't doesn't essentially penalize everybody else for a mistake. They didn't make they can take care of the dwayne issue after this season's over and it will still have an impact on the culture. He is looking for a certain kind of person. In addition to a certain kind of player haskins does not fit that description but haskins right now is not going to be dismissed so that a team can try to make a statement with two games left in the state In the season and as part of that statement missing the playoffs becomes more of a reality you know. Haskins gives them a better chance clearly than the other two. Backup guys montanez in heineke. I don't have a problem. With what ron rivera did. My smell test when.

"In this short segment as well. I've got five keys to beating the panthers tomorrow number one. You've got to stop the run. And when i say stop the run against carolina. That's all kinds of runs from joe. Brady's inch joe. Brady is the offensive coordinator in his first year and carolina with matt rule. The head coach. Joe brady with the lsu offensive coordinator last year that produced the most prolific offensive season for quarterback in college football. History bro. Season at lsu for the national champions. Joe brady is creative. Mike davis is their primary running back. I loved him at seattle. If you've listened to me over the years he was one of the guys in the last couple of years. I wanted washington to sign. Because i knew seattle didn't have room for him. I think davis was a really good back at south carolina. He's a guy that runs hard. He's a guy that has terrific vision. But it's not just mike davis you know he's not gonna carry the ball twenty times if things go well in fact if things go well his kerry count will be like twelve to fifteen sixteen carries In the game he runs hard as i mentioned. And he's able to kind of get three four five yards at a something. That doesn't look like three. Four or five yards are there but it's the way they work everybody else into the run game that jack del rio and ron rivera have to contend with. They worked their wide receivers into the run game in the same way. That kyle shanahan has done it. In recent years. Curtis samuel has sixty five catches on the season this year for the panthers. He also has thirty one carries in thirteen games. Dj more robby anderson will get the ball to. They are going to stretch a defense. You know. I think we would have seen a lot. More of deebo samuel speaking of a player with these same last name. Deebo samuel had the. I carry the game in the forty niners game against washington a few weeks ago and then he got hurt and we never saw it again. Dj more robby. Anderson curtis samuel are gonna try and keep you honest right by stretching the field with their run attack. That's what joe brady's gonna wanna do. He's gonna want to try to keep you honest with a a run attack. It's going to stretch the field sideways. And then that's for him going to make things much easier for mike davis you've got to stop the run. This team has been a bit vulnerable to the run including last week. And they're gonna get a team that's going to run it in a variety of ways. They're going to have to be ready for that and they're going to have to stop it key number two. This is going to be one of those games. Where the team. That tackles best is going to have the better chance to win. Both teams have big yards after. Catch guys davis catches the ball for them. Mike davis does is very good after the catch. Dj more one of the best in the league after the catch for washington. We know it mckissic spin after the catch and maclaurin obviously as well maclaurin may not play. I mean he is. He is doubtful for tomorrow's game. You know he's had an ankle injury that we knew that he wasn't at the same level in the last few weeks that he was in the earlier in mid portion of the season had a couple of drops last week. Apparently is a bad ankle. He may not go tomorrow now. Gibson might be back but tackling well limiting yards after catch you have to limit the yards after catch with carolina and they have to do it as well with washington. That will be huge tomorrow. Third key to beating the panthers. Third down offense. Carolina's has had a major issue on third down this year. They're thirtieth in the league. Giving up fifty percent conversions on third down. It's one of if not the biggest reason that carolina has has a foreign ten record. I would say the loss of christian. Mccaffrey is probably the number one reason. They're just a different team. With mccaffrey in the lineup. And i don't think they would be foreign ten. Had mccaffrey played fourteen games this year but number two on the list is their third down defense. They are not good on third down even though they've improved a little bit here in recent games but teams have converted fifty percent on third down. That is the third worst third down defense in the league. Listen to this in two close losses to to the best teams on their schedule. The chiefs in the saints. Kansas city in new orleans combined against carolina's defense to go eighteen of twenty four and third town that seventy five percent. That's unbelievable and yet they only lost those two games by a combined. Five points that tells you how capable this team is. Washington's done a good job over the last nine games moving the football possessing the football. And the reason they've been able to do that is they've converted on third downs last week with haskins ten of seventeen on third down against seattle. They would take that and run with that tomorrow if they can convert at that level tomorrow. they're going to have a very good chance to win key number four to beating the panthers tomorrow takeaway teddy bridgewater first-option. He gets a little antsy if the ball isn't coming out quickly based on what he thinks is going to be open. Pre-snap he can get hot. Bridgewater is a guy can get hot and get into a rhythm. He is fourth in the league and completion percentage. But if you make him wait and read it out. The ball isn't is accurate. Help take some sacks to you. Know he's got receivers. They can get open. They can make plays I've already mentioned tackling well after they catch it. But you don't even want to get to that point with carolina's offense. This isn't an easy matchup for the skins it isn't they've got guys. That are hard depress in man coverage. They've got guys that can find holes against zone coverage make bridgewater get to a second and third reads. He'll read it out. He'll read it out correctly but he's less accurate when he's got to come off that i read and hold onto the ball a little bit longer. Fifth and final key to beating. Carolina dustin hopkins. You know. he's missed a kick in nine of their fourteen games. This either a field goal or an extra point last week. Crucial miss of an extra point and that made a huge difference. In the outcome of the game against the seahawks instead of potentially in position to kick a game tying overtime forcing field goal they were down five and they had to score a touchdown. I think tomorrow's game's to be close. I do. And i think a missed kick could ultimate ultimately be a major reason that they lose the game if they lose it Dustin hopkins has to be perfect tomorrow. The john slide their kicker big leg but also inconsistent as well so kicking will be key for washington. Hopkins has to make his kicks tomorrow. You know it's not gonna be a windy day. It's not going to be a brutally cold day it's not going to be a wet field day It should be a good kicking day tomorrow at fedex field Hopkins has to be perfect tomorrow If not we could be sitting here having a conversation on monday. About how a miss. Pat or a missed field goal which was makeable with the major difference in las verses. Win all right my prediction. I don't like washington tomorrow. I'm hopeful. I i want them to win the game. I want them to go into the city. Finale against the eagles not having to win that game you know if they lose tomorrow even if the giants lose if the eagles win over the cowboys the eagles then control their own fate. The eagles then would be playing washington for chance to win the division I think washington's going to clinch the division. But i think it's going to come next week in philadelphia. I don't like the game tomorrow. My prediction carolina twenty three washington. Twenty two my thoughts. On ron rivera's handling of the dwayne haskins incident after this word from.

"The price of one. We hope to see you there. You don't want it. You don't need it but you're gonna get it anyway. That kevin she and show he is. kevin hope. Everybody had a great christmas. This is going to be. I think the shortest podcast. We've ever done it's me solo with. I don't know three to five minutes on maybe three to five topics tops. I don't even know if that's going to be accurate but it seems like a good plan right now something easily to consume For you guys on. I think they call this boxing day. The twenty six th when you box everything up to take back. I think that's why they call it boxing day anyway. I hope you had a great holiday here. Goes topic number one. Beware of the carolina panthers. Tomorrow's game against carolina is not a lock. It's the furthest thing from it carolina's foreign ten. I understand that you know washington if you're not paying attention they're six eight. They're only two games better than the panthers in a normal year without a terrible division like the nfc east this would be a totally meaningless game that people would describe as a matchup between two bad teams playing out the string but tomorrow is different because washington could be playing at four o. Five tomorrow afternoon. Four the division. You know the giants play the ravens at one o'clock and we all believe that the chances of new york upset against the baltimore team that needs to win a long shot. Even though apparently daniel jones will play in the game but if the giants lose which they should as an eleven point underdog now guarantees in the. Nfl's we saw last weekend with the jets beating the rams and the bengals beating the steelers as seventeen and fourteen and a half point underdogs respectively. Nothing's a lock. But certainly washington should more likely than not enter their game tomorrow afternoon against the panthers with a chance to clinch the division amazingly by the way if they win the game tomorrow and the giants lose and they clinched the division. I don't know if this has ever happened. Has a seven win team. Ever been able to rest their starters in the final week of the season because they've already wrapped up their playoff fate. That's already over the division wrapped up. I can't imagine that a team with seven wins. Seven and eight going into the season. Finale has ever been able to rest their starters because they've already wrapped up on their playoff position Anyway warning. I think this is going to be a very tough game to win. You know. let's start with the panthers. They are foreign ten you know. And yes. they'll be without christian mccaffrey again. They'll also be without one of their best defensive players. Brian burns. But the panthers have been without mccaffrey for much of the year and yet they have been a very difficult team to beat. Eight of their ten losses have been by eight points or less the only two games out of the fourteen. They played this year where they really didn't have a legitimate chance to win the game late. Into the second half where the two games they played against tampa bay they got blown out in the opener or early in the season two tampa bay not the opener but early in the season thirty one seventeen and then i think the game was tied in their second match up and they ended up Getting blown out late. By the buccaneers. Every other game winnable in the second half including for the panthers in losses to the kansas city chiefs in the new orleans saints among others. The panthers haven't been the type of team that a team like washington has just handled with ease. Hasn't happened at all this year. Tomorrow is basically now a tossup according to the point spread washington right now is just a one point favorite in the game so the team that has to win. The game is a one point favorite over the team playing for nothing appears to be a perfect setup for a contrarian better like me more on that coming up when i get to the smell test as i'm recording this there is no for sure word on alex smith or dwayne haskins for tomorrow. Alex made a move in the right direction of playing with his Playing tomorrow with first team reps taken yesterday friday Today will really determine more likely than not if he will get the start But as we're recording this no No definitive word on alex as of now now if he starts he better be one hundred percent healthy. If he isn't then chase young in montana's sweat are going to have to carry this team. Victory like they did in san francisco. I do not want to see. Alex smith out there if he's not healthy. It won't work if dwayne starts. I don't feel as badly about it as some of you. I don't know how he'll react to the wiki. Just add but if he can play like he did in the final quarter and a half against seattle. I think the offense is going to be just fine. I much prefer much prefer haskins over a less than one hundred percent. Alex smith to me. That's not even a conversation. It's not even a debate. I thought haskins played his best football of the year last week. If you miss coolies film breakdown. Dwayne the other day. I think we did it on the wednesday show from wednesday's show. Chris agreed with me on haskins thought. He played pretty well last week so anyway. This is a game. They can easily lose right. Vegas sees it. Washington was a two and a half point. Favorites down to one I think that the public loves washington. Trust me this will be included in the smell. Test coming up here in about ten minutes but This is a game that carolina these more than capable of winning despite washington's urgency to try to end it tomorrow Especially if the giants lose and if the giants win it'll become even more crucial so that they can contribute. They can continue. Excuse me to control their fate heading into the final week. All right. i'll give you my five keys to a win over the panthers right after this word from one of our sponsors this episode is brought.

"Storming after victory in South Carolina decimated. That's what happened. Just don't see a path for Bernie Sanders. I really don't welcome to the ticket. For years ago the South Carolina primary was a turning point for the Democratic nomination. Bernie Sanders put up unexpectedly. Strong challenge to Hillary Clinton the first few stance but his blowout loss with the beginning of he'd hold on through the end of the primaries but South Carolina showed he couldn't break through to a big section of the party. South Carolina was also a turning point in two thousand eight. Barack Obama was the unexpected challenger that year and after his win Iowa voters saw the chance to elect the nation's first black president and after polls had initially showed Clinton doing well stable Bama a huge victory any went on to become the nominee. I Wonder Hampshire get the attention but South Carolina as being crucial for the last year. So this week I spoke with someone who lived through South Carolina and Super Tuesday last time Jennifer Palmeira was the communications director for the two thousand Sixteen Hillary Clinton campaign. She was also communications director in the Obama. White House before that now. She's a Co host on showtime the Circus. And we should also note that she's an advisor to the emerson collective which owns a majority stake in the Atlantic. I sat down with pommery Friday morning at the planters in. It's right across the street from the old market in Charleston and we talked about why she thinks his crazy races and over. We talk sexism in politics. And what a former Clinton like her now things a Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump..

"Senator Bernie Sanders won the primary last night and we'll take that momentum into Nevada no but wider to bring. You ought to be pretty good new. We have now one Nevada corker. All EYES ARE TURNING TO SOUTH CAROLINA. The next battleground state in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination Bernie. Sanders is the undisputed front runner among Democratic presidential candidates hoping to challenge Donald Trump. Hey It's Alex Berenson New York so last week in Nevada. We saw the candidates are going after each other more intensely than ever before days. Before the caucuses there as Bernie Sanders was emerging as a progressive front runner with none of the more moderate candidates willing to drop out and Mike Bloomberg fragmenting devote even further good evening and welcome the Democratic presidential primary here in South Carolina. The primary in the south is just four days. Away and Super Tuesday is just a week away and this is the biggest primary day of the year as voters in fourteen states cast ballots and many of them. Tell us they have not actually made up mind so this this week with days to go until the South Carolina primary and signs that Sanders is gaining among African American voters. Things were even more wild and the debate moderators totally failed to keep control of the event which didn't help we're talking about. L. Look first of all. Let me come. I think she was talking about my plan. Not Yours talk right away. As expected it was a Sanders Pylon Bernie and I agree on a lot of things but I think I would make a better president than Bernie and the reason the candidates were trying to convey that nominating Bernie. Sanders would be dangerous. That's nominated democratic. Socialist is to deliver a second term. You trump we will elect Bernie Bernie will lose to Donald Trump and donald trump and the house and the Senate and some of the state houses will all go red and then between gerrymandering and pointing judges for the next twenty or thirty years. We're going to live with US and cost Democrats Their House majority and imperilled efforts to win the Senate twenty twenty cans. The time has come for us to stop acting like the presidency is the only office matters. Not only is this a way to get donald trump reelected. You got a house to worry. You got a Senate to worry about and this is this is really important. Hearing my name mentioned a little bit tonight maybe but what we saw from sanders was a candidate totally claiming his mantle and digging in on some of his most controversial position on Medicare for all we need to do is to do what every other major country on earth does guarantee healthcare to all people on Israel. I am very proud of being Jewish. I actually lived in Israel for some months but when I happen to believe. Is that right now? Sadly tragically in Israel through BB Netanyahu. You have a reactionary cest. Who is now running that country? What are the most revealing? Exchanges was on Cuban the Chinese Communist Party for lifting more people out of extreme poverty than any other country. You also have a track record of expressing sympathy for socialist governments in Cuba and in Nicaragua. Can Americans trust that? A democratic socialist president will not give Authoritarians a free pass. I have opposed authoritarianism all over the world and I was really. Sanders asked why he had praised some accomplishments of the cast ruining their tighter chip there. Of course you have a dictatorship in Cuba. What I said is what Barack Obama said in terms of Cuba. Cuba made progress on education. Yes I think. Really really bad to Barack Obama's they made hoping rave progress on education healthcare. That was Barack Obama. I told you speak and rather than try to back away from it. Sanders is essentially saying yes. I said it I stand by it. I was right and I'm not pivoting. Occasionally it might be good idea to be honest about American foreign policy and that includes the fact that America has overthrown governments all over the world in Chile in Guatemala in Iran and where dictatorships whether it is the Chinese or the Cubans. Do something good. You acknowledged. But you don't have. This is a core tenant of Sanders worldview his belief that the United States has often been a disruptive even destructive force overseas and by standing by that view as he becomes a front runner for a major party's presidential nomination. He's reinforcing one of his essential political calling cards. His consistency his ability to say these are the views I've had for decades. I'm right now I've been right for forty years and many voters really admire about him vice president fighting but the latest one issue sanders can't claim that kind of consistency and didn't try. We talk about progressive. Let's talk about being progresses. Walking dishes fears Emmanuel Church. Nine people shot dead by a white. Supremacist Bernie voted five times against the Brady Bill and monitor waiting waiting waiting period of twelve hours. I'm not saying he's responsible for the nine desk but that man would not been able to get that weapon with the waiting period that Ben will I suggest until you are cleared for most of his career? Sanders opposed crucial forms of gun regulation including a landmark Brady Bill in one thousand nine hundred and he voted to shield gun manufacturers lawsuits. I want allow Senator Sanders respond. Because you've gone after the insurance industry you've taken on pharmaceutical companies and you've taken on big tech. Why did you vote repeatedly to give gun manufacturers a pass Joe has voted for terrible trade agreements? Don't no no no seems to? This is a problem on all these other issues. He's just digging in his heels under attack. Here he says yes. I made a mistake. I have cast thousands of votes including bad votes. That was a bad book. And this is the rare part of his record that undercuts his claim to total consistency and authenticity. Over the years. I have today a D. minus voting record from the NRA but sanders opponents didn't let him off the hook. It's a chance for even like Bloomberg a former Republican to question sanders claims to progressive purity and to total consistency over a long career. And to do it heading into this critical next state. The issue of gun control has hurt sanders badly in South Carolina in the past. It's an issue that matters a lot to African American voters there and in two thousand Sixteen Hillary Clinton used it to great effect in the State. This time even. Bloomberg managed to get his footing in a handful of important exchanges including one in which he accused Sanders of and supported the NRA and certainly some of the Sanders is supported the NRA. But so that's the latest. We'll see on Saturday. Sanders can manage a decisive breakthrough in South Carolina. Or whether Joe Biden were someone else might still making comeback..

"That is a huge deal with the Democratic Party and south, Carolina. So anytime candidate takes the time to attend those events. Let's everyone know that you're really interested in South Carolina Interested in South Carolina voters and you're GONNA do whatever it takes to get South Carolina voters as well. Now let's talk about the barbecue aspect. So when you come this way you have to eat department Q. The low country I think they're more vinegar base. I think the upstate where I'm from is more mustard yellow base. Then I think in the middle is more like ketchup and vinegar base, but you have to come and try all of it and then a lot of people go to Rodney Scott Barbecue. So there's one in Hemingway South Carolina, and then there's one in Charleston so. Tom's dyer what he did for the arts kind of Cook off was he brought the entire Rodney Scott restaurant from Charleston to the kickoff. So he's out there serving whole mills of Barbecue. So those are just two well known staples in two well-known Barbecue joints that people know national because Rodney Scott. Says actually rank nationally with their barbecue. So you have to come to South Carolina and try those to barbecue places. I feel like if a candidate is thinking about trying to set up like the perfect photo opportunity barbecues like a worse case scenario you thanks well, if you see. You. Need to take the picture before they start eating at least what the four going into the mouth. Breath thank you so much for joining us. It's been a really really great conversation. Thank you. "Insurance is good enough for them to take care of their families. So I think we're they're looking for, is that person who will make sure that there will be taken care of because they're state isn't doing their legislator isn't doing. So what can you do for me? If I have to go to the polls to vote for you something that we're hearing from a couple of experts in different early states and I'm wondering if it's the same in South Carolina is that one difference? This election cycle versus past election cycles is there's been kind of a gun nationalization of. Of the primary and so voters are looking they're looking at national polls there. Is More than they had in past cycle do you think that's also true in South Carolina? Do you think the local traditions and in an endorsement still really reigns supreme I do I really do So for instance, a lot of people who endorsed Kamla and Start Carolina are now moving to. Joe. Biding there's this group of Women in Columbia Law Richland area called the wrecking crew they were very. Instrumental with support and calmly they were very instrumental supporting Hillary Clinton in. Now since Kamla course got out the race, they have thrown their support behind Joe Biden. So I think endorsements really work in like southern states or maybe like a rural areas because a lot of times people follow the lead of their community leaders or their elected officials is so I think that's why endorsements are still important and they mean a lot right everybody will be vying for Congressman Clermont's endorsement. But of course you he has to have a reason to endorse you, and if he does endorse, you is going to be at the last minute. So his endorsement means a lot. So just having certain people endorsed, you'd be from certain elated officials, certain community leaders and even certain faith leaders is a big deal in South Carolina, there is a narrative that Obama had proved in two thousand eight that Obama had proved he was appealing to white voters by winning Iowa, and then that gave the green light for voters in South Carolina to vote for him the do you think the order of the early states? Influences the others no I think every other state is like a football scrimmage and when you get to South Carolina you're really playing hardball. So no I think everything else is just We're just sitting here drinking tea eating cookies, but once you finally get to South Carolina is when everything really put the rubber to the road what are some of the big swings are shifts that you've seen in the primary so far? So when calmly I.

"Of course a lot had happened over the past half century. One must question just how much of an effect the sixteen twenty two massacre in Jamestown add on the long-term relationship between the Indians and the English. Certainly as we see from this Charter. The Indians were essentially being written off as odd relevant. Not surprisingly the Connie was set up with the official station. Religion being the Church of England. The proprietor of the colony would have had the ability to build and found churches. However all of them were required to be both Christian and essentially falling within the bounds and limits of the ecclesiastical laws of England. There is nothing surprising about this. Considering the Charles the second was back into power at this point of the proprietors they had nearly unlimited power within the colony they had the right to sell and lease land pass lawn issues taxes so long as the laws being passed not in violation of the laws of England. They pretty much do what they wanted. For the more they have the ability to raise forces fight wars when needed and if needed declare martial law in order to put down insurrections as was pretty common. There was a standard provisions that things needed to be done upon the consent of the Freemen of the colony however it should also be noted that should emergency situations arise. There was a bypass mechanism in place for the proprietors. The eight providers also had the ability to pass their shares of the colony down to the heirs. This is an important distinction moving forward as it means that the power of the Connie was forever tied up in these men. We will see down the roadways that one Carolina transitions to a crown colony. England is going to end up buying out seven of the proprietors and essentially repurchasing the colony from the heirs of the original eight. The charter granted the ability to licensing trade and import whatsoever. The free nature of this provision and trade is going to be hugely influential in the growth of the colony. Likewise this is one of those genie's that England is never going to be able to put back into the bottle the American colonies are always going to recoil anytime. There's an attempt to limit their trade free-trade through the colonies is a key characteristic and is something that is ultimately going to help define the prosperity of the colonies the promoters of the Connie how the right to grant titles to those living within the colony. This may seem like a minor thing however it really goes more to show the power of the proprietors in effect. They were extraordinarily powerful landlords with the key difference being that they had an ocean in between them an inland these decisions. Such as granting titles selling ladd and the ability to raise armies taxes are born out of the pragmatic need for leadership. When actually reading the charter it becomes clear that the king at least to some degree recognized the difficulty that he was going to have personally ruling over the colony for the monarch the best and really only option was to make sure that those in power in the colonies were loyal to the monarch beyond that the rule of the king over the colony was actually somewhat tenuous shirt. Nobody was talking about independence. However but for the loyalty of his governors and landlords. The king held little actual power in the colonies. This is going to be a big deal in time but relative freedom from the home islands is something that the colonies will come to hold as a central part of their existence when England attempts to turn the clock back on that and take more of an active hand. In controlling the colonies resistance will become the order of the day the Charter of Carolina granted wide ranging powers to the proprietors. It gave them the power to work. Essentially as kings in their dominion as long as they kept everything within the bounds of the laws of England. They could basically do what they pleased that. We're GONNA come back to this next week and spend much more time focusing on the fundamental constitution of the province of Carolina. This is going to give us a chance to see how the government ends up being. Set Up to finish up for this week. I want to take just a little bit of time to discuss those early years in Carolina despite the attempts to recruit settlers from within the colony. What we still have seen is a series of starts and stops during the first several years of the colonies existence. It won't be until sixteen sixty nine six years after the original grant that we see an actual holiday really take root within the province of Carolina following the grant to our proprietors. Things got off to a rather slow start in the colony for the first several years. All the activities spent on scouting in exploration missions. Now these missions did have their place and ultimately would prove to be beneficial for the colony with Virginia and New England advance scouting is minimal at best. John Smith had sailed up to the general vicinity of the New England coastline around Cape Cod. But it isn't like he had really hit the ground order. Any kind of in-depth scouted in Virginia. It was even worse recalled that when the settlers landed in sixty seven they found the first clearly uninhabited plot of land of able and grabbed it as it turns out there was a pretty good reason why none of the local. Indians had settled that pot of land. The water was brackish. It was infested with mosquitoes and the tides basically managed to turn the water around the island into a Cesspool of human waste roanoke of course had existed prior to Jamestown but little was gleaned from the experience as it wasn't really all that close to the settlement Jamestown. It is worth mentioning. That roanoke is actually known. The Modern Day state of North Carolina Not Virginia and about one hundred fifty miles separate the island from the eventual settlement of Jamestown. In both these cases it makes sense why there was little. In the way of advance scouting namely such expeditions were expensive and ultimately impractical a expedition launch from England. For the sake of exploration was always going to be a difficult task. However by the Time Carolina entered into the fray exploration have become far easier. There was substantial English infrastructure already in place throughout North America no longer. Did you have to cross the Atlantic to begin scouting and exploring the landscape? You could just leave. Virginia in terms of getting settlers acclimated to the Environmental Carolina. This is a huge advantage. Over the earlier settlements. Those who are going to settle in Carolina are not walking in blind there. One House unclear expectations of what awaits them. The first real attempt to settle came in sixteen sixty. Five Group of colonists from Barbados agreed to Settle Carolina settling in the Cape Fear Region. The colony would ultimately prove to be short lived. Cape FEAR which is way south of Modern Day Wilmington. North Carolina is a small peninsula located off the coast of the mainland. Little grew on the outcropping in the colony would fail after a short amount of time unlike the original settlement at Jamestown. If a wasn't working the colonists had other options and really didn't need to just rough it out well in the failure at Cape Fear. The providers continued to attempt to entice. New Settlers to come out is sixteen sixty seven. The Treaty of Madrid was signed between England and with L. Getting into great detail about the treaty. Here is what you need to know the Treaty of Madrid into what had been an ongoing commercial war between Spain and England. Now when I say commercial war please understand that. There was some small scale fighting. Mostly IT EVOLVED. Commercial ships taking shots at other commercial ships. Well it never really explained to a full-scale war between England and Spain. The Treaty of Madrid did a lot fused the tensions that existed between the two nations this therefore further removed the chest that the Spanish word wanted to do something crazy like striking out atty settlement in Carolina breathing a sigh of relief. This treaty would tie off a serious concern for potential colonists. Finally in sixteen seventy two hundred colonists from Barbados arrived at the mouth of the Ashley River and founded the settlement of Charlestown located in modern South Carolina Charleston would later become Charleston and this marks the first down in Carolina to survive the Spanish despite the Treaty. Were none too thrilled with this development? Having claimed the entire coastline is part of Florida. However with the new treaty in hand any weakened Spanish empire there was little interest on the part of the Spanish to get into a war with England. Some land they did make an attempt to send a flotilla up to attack but then bad weather came along and everybody just decided to go home knowing that the best defense against possible. Spanish intrusions was having large numbers. The proprietors set out on a plan to rapidly increase. The population of the new colony widespread religious tolerance was offered among the groups. That were going to be tolerated. Were Jews is something that was unusual in the other colonies. Furthermore they had an extraordinarily generous headlight system for every member of a family brought over. There was going to be a grant of one hundred fifty acres. Even an imported slave would increase a claim by medicinal fifty acres. Furthermore just to get people in the door. The land tax was kept extremely low. Just half a pence per acre per year and moreover was totally deferred until sixteen eighty nine. This bone worked well and over the next thirty years between sixteen. Seventy and seventeen hundred the population of Carolina expanded from the original two hundred to arouse sixty six hundred. This massive population growth was key. For a couple of reasons I it provided a degree of safety over the Spanish in Florida. Whose population headlong stagnated around fifteen hundred. The growth of Carolina also meant that the Spanish were largely trapped in Florida sure other opportunities existed for expansion beyond Florida however the Atlantic coast was now entirely in English hands for the Spanish. It had the practical effect of pinning them down in Florida. Not that they were really making overtures to expand beyond Florida anyway. Second it should not be discounted that many of the new arrivals so the Carolina colony were slaves with many of the original columnist. Travelling North from Barbados. This is not a surprising occurrence grinner episode on slavery. We discussed the fact that the slave trade remained far. More active in the West indies than it initially was in North America with settlers coming from Barbados however many of them brought their slaves with them out of the sixty six hundred in the colony of seventeen hundred right around twenty eight hundred or forty two percent of the colony was made up of slaves those coming to Settle Carolina. We're made up generally of middle class farmers and artisans earlier in this episode. We had talked about how the islands of the West indies had become increasingly controlled by the wealthy loan. Large tracts of land the farmers coming to Carolina were made up largely of everybody else those farmers who want to share the pie but just couldn't compete with the wealthier landowners. Carolina was how they planned to get in.

"And the thing is with the forty niners not only are they very good but with a great defense. They've got a coach who knows kirk cousins better than anybody no doubt without Kyle Shanahan knows tendencies knows knows knows everything about him. Basically did everything he could to get him in San Francisco And so in Kyle Shanahan so You know you gotta think that comes into play as well. Look if if if Kirk does beat the forty eighty nine so then you can rent Pennsylvania Avenue and meet the parade. No it won't be a no. No no you're wrong. You're wrong if he plays well and wind Saturday against the forty niners. It's still not going to be good enough. Tommy the goalposts. The goal posts will continue to move until they can't move move anymore and they can't move if he gets a team to a superbowl. That contract brought with it the expectation of Super Bowl period. Whether whether it's fair or not because he's not an elite quarterback he's a good quarterback you know most people who know as he says no but his contract doesn't match rush. His contract doesn't say second weekend to the playoffs. It says Super Bowl and if he gets there then that'll be it But you you know. If he doesn't I think it'll always be yeah. Great second weekend of the playoffs is good enough for you. Forty niners starting first time ever quarterback in the playoffs and they'll come come up with their own things. Tommy here's what I've learned about this thing. Anything he does short of a super bowl it'll or race in the moment you know sort of these false narratives until the next game until the next game and they're right back and he's right back to being the stat stuffing choker that all of his detractors. I think he is yeah. He played well Sunday though didn't he. Yes he did yes he did and I was happy for him. I'm not a big A. Ah a believer as you are but I do think he's. I think he's a good quarterback. That's what I would have. I would have him. I think if the Red Redskins had him on on their team they'd be better. I think people will look back on his years with the redskins when when Kirk is come and gone odd and and say wow. The redskins really had a good quarterback. Then why weren't.

"What Rivera is like. I I agree with you. I think he has the charisma if the results are there to become very popular I don't really popular. I guess I agree with you that because he's very likable. I don't know how much charisma he has. But he is is definitely a guy that relate swell to younger players in in a in a in an accountability accountability way. Like you know you don't want guys that are looking for J. Gruden's you know you're not you're never going to win big if your players are satisfied not being coached or having it be you know real easy in being able to dictate when they practice hard and when when they don't and you don't know that until you've actually played played for a hard ass and and had success and then you're like oh he's actually made me better as a as a player as a person and this is how you things you you know. This is how you actually achieve in win. There's a work ethic. There's a there's a way to do it but it's not unusual for people young or old to try to take the path of least resistance which is like Jay Gruden type coach. So I do like that. He is a tough guy and still the players really like them and they ended up growing to like a more and more and more as their with more and more and more. You know you say that about Mardi but and I pointed this out today. On on the radio show Lavar Arrington really was one of the more talented players over the last twenty years to where redskin uniform he was gifted man and he had incredible athletic ability. The most physically gifted players. I've ever seen no doubt and that year with Marty. I've said this before but I'm convinced of it. I think Lavar Arrington had Marty Schottenheimer coached him for his entire career. He would have been a great player and an all time. I am great redskin and unfortunately it didn't happen and he didn't have good coaching here and didn't ultimately you know. Get it together and had injuries in the whole thing thing but I bet you even Lavar Arrington would tell you that if Marty schottenheimer kicked coached him for his entire career that year at the end of that year men Lavar he who is all over the place he was in coverage dominating he was pressuring domino dominating he was. That was the best I saw him and he had more sex with. Marvin Lewis you know in Marvin Lewis came in here Spurs defensive coordinator but the martyr year. I think I think if Mardian stated would turn him into it and I think a guy like Mardi even though he salty and perhaps you know not the easiest guy in the world to get along with you know always sort of commanded the room and demanded the respect of the players too. But I think I think you're right reversal. I'm not I'm not talking about the players. I'm talking about the fans as much in this case I think if you win fan base I mean and and wins if he wins big quickly. He'll be more than likable. I mean he'll be he'll be he'll be put on a pedestal. You know and and and and Snyder won't will be powerless. Although I WANNA point out that didn't stop Jerry Jones from force and Jimmy Johnson out after after a couple of super bowls when Jerry was pissed off because he wasn't getting any credit for the cowboys success. So Jerry is Snyder's roll-on breaking news the giants have hired Their new head coach according to Adam Schefter He's Joe Judge Special Teams Coordinator Wide Receivers Coach in New England for Belichick is with Bellichik since twenty twelve started as a special teams assistant special teams coordinator and has been the special teams coordinator and and wide receivers coach for the last couple of years. What were you going to say okay? There's another addition to that. What Ian Rapoport just tweeted one note on the giants Matt Rule called them before signing a six year deal with the panthers and gave them the opportunity match to get on the plane? They declined in higher Joe Judge instead. Wow Okay so mackerel. Signs with Carolina Carolina but matt rule wanted the giant job. Basically according to rappaport So that means only the browns in the that's it. The browns have to make a higher her. And everybody's got their guys assuming there's Carthy to Dallas barrier to Washington judge to the to to New York rule to Carolina and then In Cleveland. Stop there unless somebody else gets fired. which at this point? Marin looks like he's staying in Jacksonville Right Marrone I thought if Houston lost. Maybe O'Brien would get the acts but they won so yeah and you've got you know what we didn't talk about my favorite team as somebody said this morning radio that the Vikings were actually considering. Considering getting rid of Mike Zimmer had they lost that game on on Saturday on Sunday in New Orleans. He's a damn good coach. Conservative is held but a damn good coach. I think I think I read that if they did. The cowboys are ready to jump on. The cowboys would have hired Zimmer. Yeah I think the cowboys were really rooting for New Orleans to win in that game Let me do a quick read for mybookie dot. Ag Christmas has come and gone but the Super Bowl's quickly approaching. We've seen just what you know. Teams are capable title of the season. Now it's time to get in your last bets before the big game. The reigning champion Patriots have been knocked out. Who's going to step up in the AFC? Will the Ravens get it done and chiefs Texans. Titans I liked the titans a little bit head over to mybookie dot. Ag To make those predictions that you have a reality. And I've talked about this a many times mybookie DOT AG reliable. They allow you to bet any way you wanna bet and right now. If you join my bookie they'll match your deposit halfway all the way up to a thousand thousands dollars that means if you deposit two thousand dollars you'll get an extra thousand dollars to play with all you gotta use all you gotTa do is use my Promo Code Kevin. DC see to activate the offer that's Kevin DC at mybookie DOT AG. All Right Tommy. Before you go because I know you've got to run I wanted their weight there. Waiting for me at the Pau L.. I gotta go so I want to read This Another tweet that I got because it really. It made me laugh out loud but because I think the guy was spot on as as it relates. It's to how I was yesterday. So it came from Zach. And he said Kevin Widen you gloat more yesterday. About Kirks big moment you seemed hesitant to take a victory lap like you know what's coming next. And then he put three winking emojis next to it. It made made me laugh out loud because on radio yesterday I really was a little bit. I you know. Of course the people that can't stand Kirk think I'm insufferable talking about Kirk. The people that really like Kirk you know are like God. You didn't go off enough like you. This was the moment but Zach was definitely perceptive because I felt this way yesterday I was like I felt like I do know what could be coming on Saturday. I was glad he played well. Tommy I was thrilled for him that he's that his team won the game the way they want it with with him. Engineering an absolute fabulous drive in overtime. And I mentioned this this yesterday but a lot of people thought. Oh my God and this is the false narrative right. That's that's been about Kirk. His whole career is the sort of manifests manifested itself self on Sunday with. That's the first time he's ever done that at the end of a game no. It's actually his fourteenth career. Fourth quarter or overtime game winning drive fourteen team a not not as I But anyway Zach was right. I was happy for him. I recognized it to be his career moment to date eight but I was hesitant to gloat too much because I know that Saturday against the niners he could go out and play poorly against a really good team and a really good defensive team or Tommy. He could play great but his team loses the game and he's right back to where he was before for Sunday with people creating false narratives about his career saying he never plays well with the game on the line. He can't do this he can't do that except except now they'll have to say except for that one time remember in the playoffs against New Orleans. It won't be accurate but it won't matter because his critics will take it and run with it so yeah I I think that's what was in my mind yesterday because I know this argument that you've seen you followed all the people that take me on Kirk all the people that are back me and all the people that that come at me it's been a fun back and forth thing but it's like one week there right the next week. I'm right so I gotta be careful. Yeah.

"Williams back into the building. My question to you is why would you want Trent Williams back in the building. I mean if you're building something new here I mean I had had some move for Trite Williams change in the past year. If you could trade him yeah it is. It's funny because I would have traded a year ago as you know UH-HUH I would've traded him during the summer early in the season before the trade deadline et Cetera. But I'm sort of in this mode right now. I think I I still think think it would make sense to trade him. You know I do but I'm sort of in this mode of and I'll I'll just dove tail off of what you were talking about to get to this S. because I've talked about this a little bit on the show Over the last couple of shows I think in GonNa read you this tweet that I got from Greg last night right. Kevin why are you okay with the Carolina North Movement you know referring to Ron Rivera. Hiring everybody he worked with Worked with and Foreign Carolina China and then he of course proceeded to tell me about Ron Rivera. Six losing regular seasons nine years in the Panthers Haven't won a playoff game for years Yada Yada Yada and he ended the tweet with it. Just doesn't seem like a great idea to me. Why does it to you and I have sort of answered this before but maybe not with you on on the show? I'm not as a fan. I I wasn't looking for a great idea. I don't think they're capable of great the ideas and when they've had I'm looking for a new idea. I think all of us just wanted something new you know asking for great is a big ask with this owner. Now when they've had good ideas in the past they've pretty much messed those up. You know Marty was a really good idea. Mess it up. Gibbs was a really good idea. Should've been a much better but Dan in Vinnie. Were still involved so they messed it. Up Shanahan was a solid idea. But he brought Bruce in simultaneously. Amy Sleet and I said this morning. It's like Dan Bruce Together. Were like you know a couple of monkeys with bottle rockets in a room full of talented adults. You know thinking about this weekend coming up Kyle. Shanahan versus Kirk cousins and Matt Leflore and the other NFC game aim versus Seattle and the defending champion is coached by Sean mcvay. Like you'd think about Redskins Park six years ago. That building was filled with future. Playoff playoff coaches a playoff quarterback. And all the While you know Dan and Bruce Smoking cigars drinking cores lights playing. PUTT PUTT in Bruce's office and plotting to get rid of Shanahan's and and plotting to put. Rg Three back into the starting lineup. With Jake Grooten as the new coach. Coach Bruce Bruce knew very well and knew he could control on the scale of ideas Tommy. That wasn't one of their best. So it's like I'm not looking for great I'm I'm looking for something new doesn't mean better. It just means new like the old was bad all time bad here recently. The new at least includes a very good coach. Who probably would have been better off going somewhere else? Okay you and I both agree on that. That's true but he is here very likely likely because jokey Joe Gibbs told him it could work and I don't care how much of the Panthers Organization he brings with him the more new who faces the better. The old faces never won. Anything in certainly. Didn't make me think that they were irreplaceable. I've been very entertained and I don't know if you've been the the same about the handwringing in the angst over. Oh my God Eric Schafer you gotTa keep are safer. I mean my God I mean some of. It's coming from people we know. And I'm like are you F ing serious. You don't know anything about Eric Schafer. And what's Enrique percent. What's really entertaining about? This is it's like you had a quarterback here and you're okay that he's gone. But you gotTa Keep Eric Schafer like are you kidding me. It's just it's so it's so insane but you know this is sort of what. The organization's turned a lot of us into over the years. Is that we're you know. We're we're bipolar. Solar we are. ADHD we don't know if we're coming over going on any of this but my point is this. I absolutely don't care. They're and I'm all for Changes Carolina move north. We want Trent Williams back. If that's what Ron once and runs allowed allowed to get what he gets to me if he gets what he wants. That will be the first indication that maybe things are starting to change now. Obviously the owner might one. I'm Trent back as well. But I don't care what Ron Rivera does. I'm all in on Ron Rivera. Because it's the best and latest of the new ideas. That's where I am right now. They don't help desperate. That is I very aware of it is. But it's it's like.

"Well. How old is he? How he's in mid to late late seventies right? I mean you know maybe Mike McCarthy his sit there all the old man can't last forever you know. He looks pretty good. I know I know he does. But Avenue South Cowboy thought he seventy seven and McCarthy's think. Hey you know I mean you know two three years. We'll be eighty. You know I mean look how long face and get laughter there without without any real postseason success I wait I wait the old man out as you're talking I was also thinking about this and it's something that I thought about this morning. You know cowboy in Redskin fans you know the the two are really kindred spirits in so many ways because both fan bases have basically been victims. You Know Bat ownership for twenty plus years you know Jerry. I know he's a hall of Famer in a Hall of Fame Coach Hall of fame owner. Excuse me he's done a hell of a lot for the league from a business standpoint. That's all everybody will admit that. But his franchise has won three playoff games in the last twenty three years three. That's it I know the reds one two in the last twenty one years. That's not good either. But it's not like there's you're talking about two elite and proud route franchises from yesteryear that both of them have been brought to their collective knees over the last two decades by two owners who have not been able to figure it out. No you're right. I I absolutely two franchises that it in the seventies and eighties or or considered a gold standard in the NFC. Yeah not anymore no not anymore. So we'll see Mike McCarthy. I'm doing well I'm doing and really well We you know we don't. We only have one.

"The dotted line. How does Jason Garrett satisfied the Rooney rule requirements red hair? I mean seriously. There's no possible way they're hiring Jason Garrett. Although I'm looking up Jason Gear because I wanted to see where he played I know. He's always coached in Dallas Actually he coached for Two years in Miami's The quarterbacks coach I didn't realize it but you know he played late for the giants from two thousand two thousand three. He actually played a was on their roster. Any backed up Kerry Collins in New York in the early two thousands which means he would have been on that team that went to the super bowl loss to the ravens. I didn't realize that right. Now if take giant you have to hire somebody that nobody knows about though. They can't hate them. Yeah like like drafting Daniel Jones You know nobody somebody like look I think. Marvin Lewis is a good football coach. But I don't think this is can hire him either. I I think the fans would go. Nuts Gino Jason Garrett. Apparently spoke at an owner's meeting being last spring. I think it was. I was reading about this over the weekend before it became official that he was gone in Dallas and apparently wowed the audience which was Owners and I. I can't remember where I read this. Tommy but basically was a paragraph that said Jason Garrett is an impressive person He. He spoke at the owners meetings last spring and everybody walked out of that room. Incredibly impressed with Jay Garrick. Clearly jared didn't want to move on from him he he loves Jason Garrett and maybe even in those three or four years of him playing when the mirror zone the team and they still own the team in the early two thousands along with their her recent impressions of him. Maybe they're just really impressed with Jason Garrett the person they can't hire him no you can't hire again he's just can't do it that I mean the the backlash which is the two severe So this is the New York giants were talking talking about. I mean arguably designed shouldn't.

I'm here and as is typically the case with this podcast news in in sports starts to trickle out sometime after about ten. AM In this morning already since the radio show ended. Tommy Matt Rules Been He's he's GonNa Take the Carolina Head coaching job So the Baylor coach who is really an exceptional football coach did a great job at Baylor this year. is going to be the new head coach Carolina which you pretty much knew that tepper. The new owner was going to go with somebody young. Somebody innovative somebody analytics driven that whole whole thing. But here's the best tweet. I've seen all morning long. Ian Rapoport just moments ago tweeted the following. Are you ready for this one. The giants the giants have requested permission to speak with former cowboys coach Jason Garrett he's still under contract in Dallas until January fourteenth so permission was required. They can't be interviewing Jason Garrett for the the head coaching position candidate. They can't do that. I made there. That's a fan base that that would just revolt able to run on the news. Yeah.

"The free elections provision it looks like is it is somewhat clear from from the history of north carolina jurisprudence <hes> that <hes> <hes> that that an individual can locate some right some affirmative right to have their vote count in this section ten that says election action shall be free. We're concept yeah so but federally we have no guarantee there but we are not absolutely and and i wanna point we now i mean let me i was explaining how this court is interpreting state constitutional law they they do admit right. This is directly from the opinion. The broad language of the free elections clause has not heretofore been extensively interpreted by pellet courts so in other words right right. This is somewhat new ground that this decision is is breaking <hes> and for that reason bright could get overturned at the appellate level <hes> they're they are conceding on this first point the free elections clause point that there's not a lot of law on it <hes> but but i will but i will tell you this the the underlying argument on this on the free elections clause is a pretty good argument right the idea idea is well that klaus has to mean something right and and so if it means anything right <hes> it means means that extreme partisan gerrymandering ken quoting from the decision redistricting plans that entrenched politicians in power that evidence a a fundamental distrust of voters by serving the self interest of political parties over the public good and that dilute and devalue votes of some citizens compared to others. There's is contrary to the fundamental right of north carolina citizens to have elections conducted freely and honestly to ascertain fairly and truthfully the will of the people. That's not a bad argument <hes> so well put too yeah so that's point one point. One is this violates violates a specific provisions that is in the north carolina constitution <hes> and it's in other state constitutions <hes> but not the federal before we get to point to why why don't we take a quick break and then we will find out what point to this cliffhanger opening arguments is brought to you by joi bird summer is the time under relax and enjoy the best in life and you can do it right from your own home whether you're throwing a backyard barbecue and ice cream.

"How can the north carolina court conclude that this is impermissible gerrymandering. The answer is the same way that the kansas state supreme court could find broader protections for the right to abortion under the kansas. It's a state constitution then in the u._s. Constitution so page two hundred two is where the legal analysis here begins. It starts off again. I'm gonna hit the high points <hes> it. It starts off by by noting that standing under north carolina law is is more broad than under federal law and then there's a lengthy discussion of rubio this <hes> begins begins a page to ninety eight paragraph nineteen and it says <hes> basically it says rubio's a terrible decision it says <hes> the supreme court noted all of these problems with blatant examples of partisanship driving districting decisions and that the congressional maps in that case were quote highly partisan by any measure and of quote and then kind of dryly it says nonetheless supreme court concluded in the majority opinion that partisan partisan gerrymandering claims and this is quoting from present political questions beyond the reach of the federal courts and then the attala cise federal and it gets that little citation that says has emphasis added and their arguments well. That's great and all <hes> you're not in federal court. You're in state court and we are free to note note that the north carolina state constitution offers more protections and is more expensive than the federal constitution so they located hated. Those protections in in three major areas andy a each of these. I think are really really interesting right so first north carolina china their their declaration of rights article one section ten of their state constitution has a free elections clause it says quote all elections shins shall be free and and the trial court here says the free elections clauses one of those clauses that makes the north carolina constitution more detailed and more specific specific than the federal constitution in the protection of the rights of its citizens <hes> the u._s. Constitution doesn't have a free elections clause although several other state constitutions russians do what does what does that mean exactly free. <hes> does that entail. That's the whole law. That's the whole wording is just the election is is free so yeah. Here's here's here's the way to think about this. The north carolina state constitution has a preamble right preamble but we the people of the state of north carolina <hes> for the preservation of the american union and the existence of our civil political and religious liberties you know there's a reference of being grateful to almighty god god whatever do for the more certain security thereof and for the government of the state or dane and establish this constitution and then article one is the declaration of rights so it's the north carolina equivalent of the federal bill of rights and like the federal bill of rights these are positions of principle right they they're short statements that say we ought to be self evident that all persons are created equal right all political powers vested in and derived from the people and all government of originates from the people is founded upon their will only is instituted solely for the good of the whole that was section to for example <hes> and so section ten just says it's called free elections and it says all elections shall be free what it means by free then gets interpreted rated bhai state case law in in the same way that what the first amendment reads when it says the freedom of the press shall not be bridge right what what freedom of the press means is defined by supreme court case law well similarly broad principles <hes> get explicatives it over time <hes> in state supreme court jurisprudence and the free elections provision it looks like is it is somewhat clear from from the history of north carolina jurisprudence <hes> that <hes> <hes> that that an individual can locate some right some affirmative right.
