"Let's turn to facebook. Send sendai independent oversight board and the decision yesterday to uphold the company's ban on former president donald trump's account the twenty member board made its ruling but ultimately handed the final decision back to facebook. The board said the social media site cannot invent new unwritten rules when it suits them and recommended facebook either permanently banned or reinstate trump within six months trump was banned indefinitely for his posts after the january sixth insurrection where he referred to members of the mob as special and patriots join us now longtime journalist carol cadwalader. She's co founder of the real facebook oversight board a group of experts who analyze and critique facebook's content moderation decisions and policies. Carol good morning. it's good to have you on with us. What did you make of the ruling of this. They called an independent board. That handed down the decision about donald trump and basically kicked it down the road a bit and set after six months. It's up to you facebook. Well i'm really glad you called a semi independent cool independent because of course it's not an independent board is a board which was setter falling on facebook points. To all the members they made its terms of reference and essentially. What they were trying to do is sort of. Have this an external body where they could. You know shove off the most difficult decisions it didn't have to deal with and let somebody else tight responsibility for what we've had. Is this situation whether that this vote is come back and said no. Actually this is on you. You've got to tight responsibility. And and they just kicked it right back at them and in many ways. I think that that is this is this is a good thing in this. This total denial of a facebook to just take responsibility for what goes on its platforms is. We've just seen it time and time again and this is this is a this is a this is a huge exalt glove it. So so it's it's it's it's sort of. It's a a. it's a ridiculous false ical situation but it is quite helpful in turns the attention back on
Advice for White Parents Raising Black Kids
"Rebecca carol. Welcome to the podcast. Thank you for having me okay. So i had to get in touch with you after reading your incredible incredible op-ed in in our paper in the washington post headline is as a black woman raised by white parents. I have some advice for potential adopters. Let's start from the fifty thousand foot level. Why write this piece so as soon as people started talking about. How bill racial reckoning. I thought well are. We reckoning or are we reckoning right and transracial adoptees particularly black transracial adoptees have an integral perspective on race and reckoning. We have lived especially adult. Black adoptees have lived in this foundational dynamic which we are trying to trying to be connected and trying to also be who we are while also mitigating often. Times are white families racism and so that perspective. I think is really important in this moment as we try to build on reckoning with race and changing the way that we talk about race and racism.
Texas lawmakers advance a bill that would make voting more difficult
"The state Senate. Fox's Jessica Rosenthal has more on that. One of the bill's main sponsors. Republican Senator Bryan Hughes defended the proposed restrictions, saying Texans confidence in elections eroded after the 2020 presidential election. Democratic Senator Carol Alvarado said 56% of those who took advantage of expanded voting hours, for example, were minorities. Who are you really targeting? To try to drastically reduce the number of hours and times that voters can vote well, century. As you know, there's nothing in this bill that Has to do with targeting specific group Democratic Senator Royce West said the bill could lead to violent disputes between poll watchers and elections officials. Surrogacy on the Stand
"When carol sanger started teaching at columbia law school in nineteen ninety-four surrogacy was really uncommon. In fact it barely existed. There wasn't the technology for it. And i remember that i made of a question with surrogacy in it on an exam but it was like hypothetical because there was no such thing. One of sanger's academic specialties. Is she puts it odd issues. In family law family law covers things like marriage divorce adoption custody and unin exam. She's trying to push students to think about some situation that they've never even considered something that sounds familiar but actually anything they've ever seen before. Wow and you're you're sort of craziest hypothetical you could think of surrogacy that people could create a baby as they call them then in a test tube and implanted in the mother who gave the ads and then all sorts of questions arise from that. And then you you end up watching as that sort of most obscure difficult legal question becomes this real legal question. Yes the first formal surrogacy contract in the us was drawn up in nineteen seventy six the same year carol sanger got her law degree and it was for an arrangement known as traditional surrogacy. They there's a couple that wants to have a baby. But maybe a woman in the couple is infertile or being pregnant would-be medically dangerous for this couple so they decide to use a surrogate that surrogate agrees to be artificially inseminated but the egg belongs to her so genetically. She's the mother she gets pregnant carries a child to term and then gives it to the other couple today. Most surrogacy doesn't happen this way. Lots of couples now use. What's called justitia surrogacy where the surrogate is not genetically related to the baby inside couples can use egg and sperm from themselves. And or from donors the ed guts. Fertilized in the lab and the embryo gets implanted in the surrogate through in vitro fertilization. Back in nineteen seventy six. That technology did not exist so that i nineteen seventy-six because he contract was for a traditional surrogacy arrangement and it was put together by a man named knoll keen. He was from michigan. He was a lawyer and he became known as the father of surrogacy
Nikola Jokic climbs past Dikembe Mutombo for impressive Denver Nuggets record
"Yokich. Okay. All right. He's the franchise leader and double doubles right now. Yeah, and I haven't said this name in a long time on this broadcast, so I'm gonna give it a go. He passes Denver Nuggets legend Don't know You're not going to do it all. Are you, Kim Bain Will Tom Bo mop Alando Mo combo, Zhaan Shock One will tumble, John. I mean, kind of a nice job. I think you got pretty close to Carol. I can't. I can't remember my kids. Middle name is but I got that. Yeah. Joker now is has more double doubles than anyone in the history, The Denver Nuggets, and he's 25 doesn't feel like he's just getting started. Dude. Yeah, he had been here that long. Incredible. He was a plus 20 miss one shot tonight. One shot out there, Right, right. I mean, come on, joker would I don't even know what you're doing at the cellar, The yoke its killer. Seattle Seahawks Today: Latest Rumors On A Russell Wilson Trade
"Originally or a few a few weeks ago russell. Wilson's camp released some information that he was unhappy in seattle. They have not formally requested a trade but it seems like the relationship has some conflict there. he has a no trade clause in his contract. There were specific exemptions from four. Team's the cowboys. The saints the bears and las vegas after dak prescott signed is extent like talked about and the raiders recently have back derek carr. They've given their full support. They they wanna move forward their cars. So that really leaves the saints and the bears as the final two candidates for possibly getting russell wilson this offseason so saints are always in salary cap trouble From what. I've learned about the salary cap they can. They ended up being able to just move money around when they need to. But they're always close to reaching that point so they're always during the cat but it seems unlikely that they will be able to make a move for quarterback this price in this caliber. So when you re comes down to it. The bears like the front runners as the most desperate team. Four quarterback if you've watched the nfl shares have always had quarterback issues. They've been in quarterback hell so to speak for the past two decades and russell. Wilson could come in and immediately fix that so the bears are desperate. And i see the bears as the front running candidate to lead russell wilson or land russell. Wilson this offseason. So when did all this start with russell. wilson is come out of nowhere I would say to myself when i first saw. Russell wilson wants out. I was shocked. But although it's not that cut and dry comes down to russell wilson. Mp carol's relationship. So they've won a superbowl. They made playoffs made. They made the playoffs. Eight times in the last nine seasons which is absurd. It's absurd to think there was wasn't been playing in the nfl for the last nine seasons But he's been assault as they come. He's true winner. he goes to the playoffs. he's clutch and i see. The situation is very similar to the tom. Brady situation new england. You had tom brady and bill play for all those years. Winning all those super bowls and talk. Although tom brady wasn't playing up to his level he wasn't playing bad and they had that loss to the titans of the playoffs. And i think he just had those two egos bill. Belichick and tom brady kind of going at each other. And they've they've finally kind of just tired of that relationship and they wanted to move on. They wanted to start. Something new. And when quarterbacks are with the head coach for so long things start to take a turn for the worst so. I'm not sure if that's exactly what's happening with p carroll and russell wilson but there are a lot of similarities there so it was reported in week. Eleven of the season. That wilson stormed out of an offensive meeting when he was trying to offer insight as to what he wanted done as on a bit done for protection standpoint and so that was the first sign the second sign is just overall. He's been getting hit way. Too much. says he's sacked. He's been three hundred ninety four times since entering the league which is on pace to be the most sat quarterback of all time which is pretty insane when you consider how well he's played and he's just been under duress running for his life literally for the last his whole career and so seattle hasn't found a way to kind of sure up that protection for him. I think that's starting to get frustrating as well. So but more specifically in two thousand twenty. He had a week nine loss to the bills. This was a defining moment for this offense offense because after that moment. Russell wilson had started to throw a lot of turnovers making a lot of risky plays they lose to the bills. The seahawks kind of started to scale the offense back like i said to limit turnovers and did not perform well for the rest of the season so before that game. They were top. Three league based on expected points added per play. They were the number three the top three leak and then after that game from from weeknight on they felt a number eighteen the remainder of the season. So that's a huge huge drop off so they really sputtered down the stretch. They were able to win games and make the playoffs through to their defense. Kind of picking picking up. Their play was weird. Their offense was so good in the beginning the defense awful and he kind of flipped that latter half of the year but he's also getting hit It doesn't seem to meet on their offensive loss of beat philosophy and he. He's definitely voiced that he wants more of a say. In the franchise direction as the franchise quarterback so all these things culminating into one is. Where would he end up.
Women-Owned Businesses We Love: Hint Water
"During this women's history month we've been celebrating. Women owned businesses and talking to their founders. Because we know that buying from women owned businesses is a great way to empower women. We learned a lot from these women. And why women entrepreneurs will help us restart this economy. They've told us how they pivoted during challenging times bounce back there examples of resilience optimism and innovative thinking. Today we get a lesson in another topic doubt and we hear from woman who you might not expect would have a lot of doubts. Cara golden the founder of hint water. The unsweetened flavored water that she built into a hugely successful brand. In fact carry even wrote a book about it. Undaunted overcoming doubts and doubters. I had an opportunity to speak with her on are made by women podcast. Here's what cara had to say. You call yourself. An accident entrepreneur. I guess by that. You mean you really weren't intending to start a company but you as you say realize that water just needed to be cooler for lack of a better word. Yeah no absolutely yeah. I call myself. An accidental entrepreneur primarily because unlike many other entrepreneurs out there i. I didn't intend to actually go start a company but what i realized is that just by kind of living my life as a consumer. I started seeing these problems that really needed fixing. And and so that's why i decided to go tackle it. I think there are entrepreneurs that i've met over the years to where they know when they're a kid or they know when they're in college that they should you know go develop something and but that just wasn't me at all and and You know so. I think there's entrepreneurs come in all shapes and sizes. I guessed i sort of didn't know the aspect of actually starting a business raising money. You know figuring out how to not only start a company but started brand new category in a very competitive marketplace. So that is what. I embarked on so a lot of people have great ideas and i think maybe even a lot of people see holes in markets but still to crossover and actually do. It is a different thing. Your book is called. Undaunted overcoming doubts and doubters. How did you cross over to decide to start the company and and did you have doubts early on absolutely Yeah i. It's one of the things that i felt in and really the reason why i wrote. The book was that i think there's this Misconception that that entrepreneurs are are you know very confident and they don't have fears and they never have doubts or don't have doubters donut failures and you know. Especially when i was out speaking about building my company over the last few years i would run into these people who would articulate that and almost you know site that i was so different than they were because they had all these insecurities and walls around them and one day. I just. It really dawned on me that i was no different and and successful people that or business people are athletes. Were really no different than anyone else. Other than the fact that they actually tried and that they knew that there was a chance that they were gonna fail but they felt like they would go and try and so that is really the essence of my book. Is that just by sharing my story of not only building The company but also a little bit autobiography to on growing up as a kid and and kind of the things that you know. I thought about an somebody who read my book early on As a preview of it said that you know just you don't actually say in this book you don't talk necessarily about parenting but you definitely describe this environment that you grew up in which was go and try right like it doesn't matter if you fail you need to just go try and i think it's a lot of what i do. You know as a parent to i for Teenagers and you know. That's that is what i'm constantly saying. What do you tell yourself when you're taking on that next big challenge. I mean obviously not everything you do everything. Anybody does going to be successful. So what did you tell your younger south. And what do you tell your kids say about that. I try whenever anything's a little bit scary for me. I try and figure out how to break it down a bit. And so i don't allow myself to sort of get into a head space of making it so big that it's it you know it's gonna freak me out right and so that i can't move forward and so i think that that is such an important piece for for people to recognize. Is that when things do. Start getting really scary and again like i still fear things i still. You no doubt myself on things that i'm doing but just know that if you could actually just break it down a little bit and start to make steps forward things start to seem easier and even when you do fail right this. This isn't another thing that i've really learned to appreciate that. The next hard thing that you encounter you'll probably have greater strategies and ways to kind of move forward learnings just from that last failure In making this next scary things successful or you know really less daunting what great advice. So here's something could for today. Carol golden reveals the essential quality of all entrepreneurs perseverance. They may have doubts and they may fail sometimes but they try again and when they try and fail and then try again. Chances are they have success the next time that willingness to try is the hallmark of so many women business owners we speak with you can learn about more of them are new seneca women marketplace. Some Scientists Question W.H.O. Inquiry Into the Coronavirus Pandemic’s Origins
"About the recent commission that was looking into the origin of covert 19 over in China. Specifically, Jamie, you know one thing I want to ask you do you could see that there's a real possibility that we Are ultimately never going to get Maybe the data and information from the Wuhan lab that will ultimately maybe tell us whether or not it was a lab accident or whether it was truly Transmission from bats and animals. Yeah. No, I think that's quite likely and Anyone who's been paying close attention that China has engaged in a massive cover up over the last year, they immediately started destroying samples, eliminating or moving access to records. Imprisoning journalists and others asking questions, and they established a universal gag order not allow any of their scientists to speak publicly will write anything about the origins of the of the pandemic. And so the question is not is China engaged in an active car up to try to office Kate? The issue of the origins of the pandemic is should we play along? And that's why In open letter, but we've said that the world community needs to articulate what castigation looks like. We'll kind of access to records, samples and personnel. We need in order to find where called it comes from nights. I think it's almost it's very, very clear to that question is answerable thing. China is going to sell. Jeez, sorry about that. We've been in each in this cover up are bad here, is it but Let's set the standard and tells them tell the world I will not help and that's on them. And we shouldn't start with the compromise. If it is ultimately case that China is covering stuff and again, you know We? We don't know what this this juncture on day two be fair, But I do wonder Is this just not though? Potentially, You know another indication, Jamie, you'd have talked about this a lot, the complicated relationship that is the world with China. To be quite honest going forward, and so you know. Companies. Major companies want to be involved in China, and they're willing to maybe look the other way government's willing to look the other way. If there are, you know policies that they're uncomfortable with on this is just how it is. I mean, that's that is partly right. You mean China is a very big, very important country. There are areas where really need t collaborate Actively China even whether we like it or not. The betterment of the world. But my view do on this. And Eric, you and I have discussed over the carol is that you have to have standard right own behavior. In those interact can't be lowest common denominator relationships. It has to be. Oh, well. Here's the standard of what we believe and when so many people are dying. I'm a terrible enough believe totally of will pandemic. We have to be able to add very least the tough questions where this comes from, for all of our good, including the good of the people, China right exactly. But you also know, too, that it's kind of have been an interesting political global political world where China has also pointed the finger at the United States to say, you know, what are you doing to your people? You know what I mean? It's just kind of an interesting time here. It's true and they're not wrong in every ace. I mean, they're all kinds of terrible things. And whatever the origin of the pandemic, there is a reason why Nine people have died of covert 19 in Taiwan, and we're over 500,000 here in the United States. That's not the origin. It's the In many ways they're significantly The response our government, so there's a lot of fingers to point, including it ourselves, but we should just we need to be honest. When pointing in all directions. Hey, listen, we just have about 40 seconds left her. Do you think at this point to maybe a key conversation is to have is to identify other high risk lab research. That's being done on pathogens so that we just in case we make sure where aware of this and just got about 40 seconds. Yeah, absolutely. It's Cove. It comes from an accidental Lavely, which I think is most likely origin. But your listeners can go to the guy. Jamie Metzl dot com site, read the evidence and judge for themselves. I mean, maybe we have a bigger lab safety problem than we thought we had and then let's look carefully for is now looking to build another level for Virology Institute. In a high since it is the high throughput city next to that is an international travel. We need to be asking tough questions. Pandemic can't have to ask the tough questions. Are we going to ask? That's why we like talking with you because you're always asking the tough questions. Hey, Jamie. Nice to check in with you be well. Jamie Metzl, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council and former National Security Council official founder and chair of the global movement, one shared world which you confined. Online are you're
Bill Barnwell Breaks Down NFL Quarterback Moves
"So bill. We gave you do the math a whole month away from this podcast before our dependency bio chemically kicked back in so i just hope the last four weeks have been everything that you personally needed. Pablo got on many vacations. I turned around my life after six months of just staying watching football now. Bill barn wells weekly column on. Espn plus and he hosts the bill. Barnwell show podcast realistically. I have done something that few human beings have accomplished. I managed to get one pack of moments from nba. top shot. yeah. We share that same addiction. You are far deeper into the game than me. I realized over the weekend. I just want there to be an nfl top shot. Because i feel like that's going to happen right. It has to. i mean. Imagine the things you could do. You could send somebody that colts fake punt from years ago or or if you wanted to try some of your friends. Perhaps you could send the russell wilson interception from the nfl top shot to a certain person with the initials m used to host the show. Yeah just randomly picking in that example in those initials absolutely but bill. We dragged you back here. Speaking of a certain quarterback who threw a certain interception emotionally terrorized ours. Because this is an especially dramatic. Nfl offseason. they're all these big name. Quarterbacks who want out of these relationships that seemed from a distance at least pretty broken and russell wilson and the seahawks. I need to ask you about that. I because i know russ isn't feeling respected by head coach. Pete carroll reporting. I know that carol wants to revoke all of his cooking privileges. We've heard now. Russell wilson like storming out of meetings which is kind of funny to imagine like door very lightly slamming so this particular soap opera. What is all of it. Feel like to you much ado about nothing really. I mean i just i. Just don't buy russell wilson drama. I go back to his contract. Negotiations this is the same player in the same agent. Who wants imply that he would leave football in the middle of these negotiations entering the final year of his deal to try professional baseball. Where russell wilson once for the iraqis and the organization he hit to twenty eight in the low minors before returning to college football. It was not a realistic threat. But if that way does he want the seahawks to give him more helpful on the offensive line which has been sort of the crux of his public complaints. Yeah i do believe that. And i think that the seahawks could benefit from giving him more help. They relied on russell wilson to run his way out of sacks and free pressures from unblock players which has worked for that stretch buddies also taken a ton of hits cuss russell. Wilson plays the way he plays. He is going to take a ton of sacks regardless of how good his protection is the best way honestly pablo to get him. Hitless frequently would be to run the ball more. Which is the exact thing. Russell wilson was trying to get the seahawks do lasso last offseason. So there is something here but i very much doubt that leads to a trade. My favorite thing about this new cycle i think is that russell wilson has relayed via his wrapped. Adam schefter that he is not demanding a trade but if he were there are these four specific teams that he'd like to go to the bears. The cowboys the saints. The raiders does any of that make sense to you know not at all i mean the classic russell wilson tropez that ciara was going to pick teams him in new york in los angeles which this is the opposite that list even the teams he chose are so strange. Maybe you'd argue that. He chose teams with great offensive. Lions triumph of the seahawks. But the trade doesn't really add up the same. Stu have agreed offensive line. But they're like sixty five million dollars over the salary cap. The cowboys have a great line. Whenever everyone's healthy but they also have back prescott. that's not gonna work either the bears. I don't understand. They don't have a great line or any cap space. That one makes no sense to me on either. Level the raiders. Maybe are the most interesting and plausible candidate of the bunch with a great line and some cap space to work with. But when i think about jon. Gruden as raiders coach. He wants quarterbacks to do exactly what jon gruden wants on every single play. I don't think any if it really adds up to meaningful trae dialogue. I don't think there's going to be a conversation between the seahawks and another team about trying to make a trade for russell wilson work but this is twenty twenty one anything is possible

Which would be los angeles area sunset strip hollywood and you know not the bright lights and and fancy stuff there the underground the dark underbelly and also i have a fun fact for you Maybe i should backtrack there. It's not so fun as much as it is an interesting fact but you tell me What you might think of it now. If you leave a comment you know Ted bundy you know the name and in america. He's the most sensationalized killer of our time. There's probably no less than fifty movies and books on that guy. And he wasn't the most prolific if you will if you're keeping stats I think it was samuel. Little died recently. He was near ninety three victims. So he's not like that guy but nonetheless you know his name and the serial killer world he reigned supreme which is an interesting thing and a sad thing at the same time because in america we like to keep stats so very strange about us folks. But here's a fun fact for you if you will. There was another serial killer in the united states named bundy with the same last name. And furthermore wasn't a guy it was a woman and her name was carol m bundy and she's a focus of Part of today's episode. Along with her partner in crime men name doug clark and they were coined the hollywood slashers. They did their dirty work about forty years ago. So today's episode. I'm talking about the hollywood ripper. Which is a recent kind of case that's come to being closed. And justice brought to their and then the hollywood slashers going back about forty years and just to talk about these two Cases and maybe learn something for the future. So let me talk about carol bundy and doug clark before i get into the ripper. Who came around. Oh probably about twenty five thirty years later and was most recently convicted. So those two somehow each other in the dirt and grime areas of sunset strip area in those bars and they got together with her dark ideas And found that they shared some some dark fantasies. If you will on some sick fantasies

Hustle chris this is carol and i just recently found your show from the happier podcast. I've been seeing lots of stories about mom instagram irs. I guess they're the new mommy bloggers. Anyway it's a strange world. And i started going down the rabbit hole. The follow some of them. I found a lot of people with tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of followers. Do they mostly get paid for hawking products. And how much do they get paid. I'm not sure he wanted to do this myself. And the politics behind. It seem even stranger than all the posts about home furnishings. I'm mostly curious if this is even a viable idea looking forward to hearing from you all right. There's a lot we could say about this. So let me try to be on point here. And i thank you so much carol for the question So glad you found this show from happier. I'm a big fan of happier. Podcast with gretchen rubin gretchen has been a friend in many ways. A mentor to me. For many years. I've learned so much from her. Continue to admire oliver. Work all right. Let's talk about this interesting strange world here. I love how carol phrases this is it a viable idea. Well the whole point of school in many ways is to show that they're a tremendous number of viable ideas that most people would never have considered basically. We've looked at all sorts of random topics so in that sense. It is viable in the sense that some people have been able to do quite well with it. I'll come to that in a moment. So a big part of me thinks well more power to you. You know like if you're able to figure this out in great why not but. I also think it's fair to say as well is clearly a bubble of some kind you know in the ones the people who really want to be successful here. They're going to have to evolve across platforms and also evolve with the times. Most of the big name. So-called mom bloggers just went away and the ones that are still active online are either doing something else entirely or they just don't reach as many people now like they don't have the influence they did during during peak mom blog so to these questions of how much they paid these days for the instagram model. For what well they usually do. It is essentially to use carols phrase hawking products. They are paper post in other words. A brand is saying. We're going to pay you so much for this post. It's often based almost always based on the audience size. Most mom bloggers in the ten thousand to fifty thousand follower. Range will earn a few hundred dollars for product posts. It can be a pretty big range. Like i was reading about someone who has several hundred thousand followers and she was saying she. She's done deals for four hundred and fifty dollars. She's done deals for five thousand dollars. Okay so there is some real money at the high end. At least i think also. It is a cutthroat world and a lot of ways very saturated moms grammar market. Many brands only offer free product instead of payments which also it's kind of like more power to them like a lot of people say well. They shouldn't be doing that. They can try right just like anybody can try to be a mom instagram or any. Other kind of influence ser-. We've had stories in our archives of people who have offered free product instagram. That's helped them a lot so ultimately it's a free market you can choose you know affiliate commission where you get a cut of the sales price. They can be really really small and they're also issues with tracking so you can spend a lot of your influence over time pitching something and very few people swipe or whatever. They're they're supposed to do and if they do. It's not always tracked to your account last but not least certainly not least. You're always at the mercy of instagram and facebook of course which owns instagram and its algorithm so clearly not a sustainable business on the other hand you always need to evolve so if you originally wanted to be a mom blogger. It's hard to ignore instagram.

"That's a Bloomberg business Flash. Carol. All right, Thank you so much. Really appreciate that. Karen, you are listening to Bloomberg Surveillance and so of course, another pharmaceutical company. Big Farm out starting Phase three. Covert 19 vaccine trial. We're talking about Novavax. They're going to start that face Retrial. Of its vaccine with 30,000 people across 115 locations in the U. S and Mexico so opening up essentially another avenue for vaccinations to fight the pandemic. This is coming out. From the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for the implications for the significance. Let's bring in Bloomberg Health and Science Editor John Larry Man joining us on the phone, John Good to have you here, So tell us about this. This is now What a 3rd 4th company. Keep me keep me honest here. You mean in terms of phase three trials? Yeah, and or in a vaccine that looks like it's moving closer to the finish line. That's right. Well, um, there's uh There are other Uh, companies that are in phase three. JJ's also in pastry. But in addition to the front runners, the two they've improved the during an advisory ink and along with AstraZeneca, Uh Which looks like it's approaching from approval. Right now, This is good news. This is another operation warp, speed funded companies that is going to face three they received $1.6 billion From the U. S government. Tomo tested developed this code vaccine. This is I'd say more of a gamble more of a long shot thing. The others. Novak has not produced marketed vaccines. The company has been around so long time. They have different experimental approach and sort of be interesting to see they're planning to recruit 30,000 volunteers into this Trial, which I think could be a little bit of a challenge. Given that there are other vaccines that have been at least clear that are received emergency use organizations already Well, it's interesting too, I guess. Yeah, it's interesting to find out the differences if you will, In terms of these vaccines, a potential vaccines. How is this different or similar to what we've seen? You know, we've all learned so much. John, thanks to you and others, about messenger or in a which is what we see in the first two vaccines that are out there. But what is what's the science behind the Novaks vaccine? Um Well, there is, uh see, um Novak checks so I know it's all just coming out. So, Yeah, baby, a kind of cold here, not one of the Amara exactly Right, And it's also not a viral vector vaccine. I believe what they have, is they actually I hesitate to say I have to have tea. Oh, do a little bit more, but that the the I think it actually works differently. I think I'm just looking to you. You and me. We're both kind of reading it because this is just all across the Bloomberg, but it doesn't work differently. I think than the ones by Fizer And some other I guess it contains artificially produced viral proteins, along with an Indian boosting compound. So I guess to teach the immune system right to recognize the protein in the virus. That's what they all do. Yeah. Bye bye. Different mechanisms, the marinade. And the viral vectors Vaccines, um, induced the induce the body to make those proteins themselves. And I believe this one actually is injected protein as a zoo say, along with Um, uh, some materials that increase increase the immune response Well, and I guess what's interesting job, you know, And what's really important is understanding that Operation works speed. We know it was a lot of collaboration between government, private sector communities, the science community, uh, you know, to really just kind of get everybody working on it. I do wonder if ultimately how you see this. And your understanding. Will it be that most of the vaccines will ultimately come from kind of the first movers bandages? There are those with the first mover advantage, meaning Fizer, Madonna and potentially AstraZeneca. Well, they're all these vaccines are being counted on to supply the U. S. On and other countries as well. So there's all these numbers, you know, go into the calculations for Getting do us to herd immunity. Um, it's at some point next year. If some of these vaccines don't pan out, then it will take longer. I mean, the production is there. Um, uh, you know to, you know, to get that means potentially for them. But in the U. S. Even if that all of them pan out its speed, which we do get everybody vaccinated. That will be a steak s O. It's interesting. So this is the fifth investigational covered 19 vaccine candidate to be tested in Phase three trial in the US Who else are you keeping an eye on John? Well, obviously we're keeping and I a close eye on J and J. That's the single shot formulation and that, you know, well known vaccine company. Could scale up very quickly could be extremely convenient to use. AstraZeneca, which is on the brink. Looks like it being approved in the U. K is also planning a huge production and the U. S. Has, um You know it advance purchase on some of their shots, along with additional hundreds of millions of doses in options. Yeah, It's just Yeah, It's just, you know, a lot more to come. And I would anticipate that we're going to continue to see more of these thieves headlines when it comes to the distribution that we're seeing, and the logistical challenges is a kind of Playing out as you expected, or is there anything that surprises you in a good or bad way as we you know, I think it's the number that I saw 4.4 million have been vaccinated around the world at this point. Yeah. So, um We have seen all these precautions beforehand of 20 million people being detonated the U. S. By the end of the year. That's starting to look like a real long shot, and it just doesn't look like that's going to happen. So, um is it a surprise to see snags? That is, it is, it is surprised to see Uh, you know, some, maybe some disappointments not entirely, but it's not going out. I would say so far as predicted. Now, things could Pick up very quickly after the end of the year as somebody's neck get ironed out is is. Vaccination gets expanded. Um, you know, obviously, that's I think What we're hoping for is that the process gets moved out. Yeah, exactly. We're watching that really closely as well as you are, John. Thank you so much really appreciate the update. Bloomberg Health and Science Editor John Leatherman joining us on the phone and, of course, as we mentioned, certainly one of the big headlines at this hours. Novavax now also moving.

What a sweet voice She has. Yeah. Merry Christmas, Mrs Clause to you. It's been said many times that behind every good man is a good woman and Santa and the reindeer get a lot of the headlines. But I suspect there's a part of the North Pole that requires a woman's touch. Would that be true? That is so true. My job is keep Santa in line, and that is a big job to manage the reindeer. And I'm the head chef of the whole North Pole kitchen. Wow. Oh, that's that, it says. So you're feeding Santa and ran and we know that Santa, you know, it's It's pretty obvious that you must be a very good cook Mrs. Clause because Santa, you know, I mean, he's Well fed abundant. Yeah, well fit exactly like to eat Mrs Claus. What's the biggest challenge for you on Christmas Eve with everything that's going on? How did what role do you play on Christmas Eve? Well. Just keeping everyone on task. The reindeer always fighting over who gets to be in the front or who wants to be in the back. Got to keep that straight. Most of all, it's helping Santa. Get out the door. He can't find his boots. Where is my phone? Where's my gloves? It takes a while to get him out the door. Does. You know Mrs Claus? Is there any anything about Santa that you think most people you know, most people know kind of the basic, jolly old Saint Nick stuff. But is there any anything that you'd like to share with us that maybe we don't know about Santa. Well, he probably would hate me telling you this. But we all know he loves cookies. And keeping the cookies out of his pockets. There's nothing worse than cleaning pockets with cookie crumbs is the other thing is that he's very superstitious. And everybody thinks he wears all red, but he wears his lucky blue socks on Christmas Eve. Wow. Inside information from Mrs Claus. Yeah, those Blue socks tucked away inside those black boots. Well, so far, they certainly have been lucky socks that up to this point, Mrs Claus. Is there any special? I mean, with all the covert and everything this year and all the virus and everything does that concern you sending Your husband out to go around the world and see all of these people on what night deliver all these gifts? Let's get everybody should be really annoying and go on buses and public transport and just listen to a PO- cost lost without headphones which think four it melts read the news comments <unk> ice cream chat done. Let's get onto this week's big question which is how do we come up with the titles for books and for characters actors saying T._B.. Had to come up with the Times books I don't have a set method. I know from a very first novel woman lost. It wasn't actually originally called a woman lost. It was called adventures of idiot in love and when I started trying to picture the cover that's a really long title. That's really gonNA work so I went to you dinner with my partner. This is when we London we went to one of our favorite Chinese places near us. We just started brainstorming. My partner said well. What's the main theme of your main character? I'm like well. She's really lost. Let me she's lost and so my partner is the one who actually came up with the name for that book and once I got that book title <unk> since it is a series although there book titles in play with the same theme there's usually woman in the title set made it easier so that was that was a group effort in <hes> there there was some beer and wine involved when we crafted craft that title but some other titles were bit harder for me to come by in I would I kind of put a call out to a Beta readers in editors like you know <unk>. Can you help me craft the title because it's not coming to me okay and then I had to series did the Miracle Girl in the Chosen One where I had those the series titles before even started writing which was so much easier on me because the mayor girl that's part of the whole mystique of the novel like why is she called American girl is. It's a huge part of her backstory will. I won't tell you guys why she's called the miracle. You have to read the book to find out in the chosen. One is the same kind of premise where the reason she's called. The chosen. One is her back story in so it it just worked out well for those issue series to know that but I don't think for listeners who are thinking of writing a novel or Novella or short story. I'm not sure you actually have to have the title before you even start but <hes> it is something you should keep in the back of your mind mind when you are a crafting your story. What do you think I would love to have my titles before I saw I think it would be a great thing to happen? I'm just looking along who my books and there's not one of my books. <hes> the had the title title before I started the owner he may be London actually because again like you say series books are slightly easier to cross because you know that it has to follow a certain template and so I went under remedies that has to be the would in London in the title but I didn't think that before I started to series because I didn't really know who's going to be a series when I started in say that kind of created problems will me because my initial one London cooling. I I came up with that right at the end I and then this London love I think I came without myself but a Goku London and the London of us were again taking friends out to dinner bind them bind them food implying them with wine and then saying and the only days my dad blessing came up with a hilarious list of Radi bad titles but I think they did so prompt a few things so I did give him a big cute also in that he is five say he's titles. He was like the London Underground with women or something like that and I was like yes good dad a lightweight you going but this does great though because even Kinda gives true to the fact that there are no banner years because even though the idea is bad you can kind of play around with it and you Kinda know what what is resonating with people in what they're picking up on when you tell them what the book is about so you can even though you didn't choose that exact title which I kinda find humorous. I might have to ask him next struggling. He's retired. He's got low to tell him he came out with about twenty times which I did find very sweet and from those titles I think a kernel of an idea wound and then so he did help definitely up yeah. It's like you said it's it's not it's like if you're trying to think I remember this from from my journalism days trying to think of a title for an article says the same thing just right a lot of words down the odd that match the the topic that you're trying to put title Turkey or just look at the source and say see other words you can do and then it can spark an idea say yeah definitely just just sit down and scribbled alighted things down or go out and play you friends and loved ones with with <unk> based food and hope they come up with something we that was my London series the other one the other thing that I generally tend to fall back on if I can't think of it they is solarex because some lyrics things the AH cluttering my head twenty four oh seven but so many song lyrics in my head and there's not much else say London Cooling Song. You're my kind song. Will I went for Christmas Song. It had to be so. Do we see a pattern. We do say yeah just just and I think that's the same a law. Things isn't it mining other forms of creativity ideas you when you're writing nick things from movies and other books and T._v. shows that you think unless good idea as well as just a knife say I think it's vowing to just look at all other things and see where you can pull an idea from and sometimes I think I'm being really really original and I'm not as in twice in lifetime. Say When I looked fat I though yeah that's a great anytime soon and then to other people lose lesbian romances with exactly that title within a month chances Royston them. I'm not twice lifetime. "Would have actually sentenced him death, or earlier than Christmas, carols. All right. So go that is speaking of food. Here's a story then and this is this one pissed me off. So this woman by the name of Bonnie Kimball was fired by her employer. She was a cafeteria worker and she was fired by her employer. Because what, what, what do you think they fired her, and he guesses? She had been working in the cafeteria for years. Gary went to guess she was hungry one day and took a little food. Okay. You wanna take a guess, why the cafeteria fired her the school district story. No it. Okay. All right. She gave a student lunch because he couldn't pay for. Come on. Okay. So this woman had been working you five years on this job should love the job. Trust me being a cafeteria workers, that easy job dealing with those kids, especially dealing with the middle school kids. They're horrible, right. But, but she loved her job. And so they came in. And somebody had ratted her out. And said you shouldn't be giving away free food. And the kid was just, like I don't have the money to pay for it. So she goes, I'm just dealing with a lot right now. A one minute, I'm mad the next minute. I'm sad cafe services. The food provided Kimball was implied by said the company couldn't discuss why employees terminated but that would not be let go because they provided this lunch to a student. Well, that's exactly what happened. Right. However, let it from the company provided by Kimbal seems to suggest she was fire for giving the student items without collecting payment, that's called just giving the kid free food because he didn't have the money. That's what it was. So the they fired her the Kanter. That's ridiculous. Go fund fund for her. Something whenever maybe another school higher. Is there a lawsuit there legally? They can't fire her, but just bastards that's just that's brutal. So I one more little story for you, and this, this doesn't really involve anybody getting fired anybody going to jail, or like that, at least not yet misguided been busted, I don't know. I'm kind of jail time he's gonna get. So there's a twenty five year old guys name is Brady. And his last name is few. F U, C H s Fuchs. That's the way I pronounce it for South Dakota. The safest way to announce it right. He was arrested last month for stealing more than five hundred dollars worth of adult toys. Sex toys from a couple's house over the course of several years. His kept on breaking someone's house doing the sex toys, I don't know. What's the weirdest story the fact that he kept stealing the toys, five hundred dollars worth, or they kept replenishing in that knowing what happened to their toys? Radio on news talk eight fifty. W. F T..
