"So here's the thing. I think that the general consensus when you talk to people around the league about the Patriots free agency is they are probably going to go back to their conservative approach in free agency that we've seen pre 2021. Obviously, I think that's a given given their salary cap situation. They don't have the money to go on another spending period. So they're not going to do it. So leaguewide, the consensus or the belief is that the Patriots are going to be a little bit more conservative, like you said, chase, particular value signings like a trade flowers, potentially somebody in that mold. I don't think that they're going to spend big at corner. I don't think Carlton Davis is.

"I'm getting paid for this, right? All right, dinks and dunks, four questions from me, one from Lenny. So franchise tag deadline came and I got a few questions that were oriented around that. First of this, first is this. Are you as surprised as me that the bucks tagged Chris Godwin? Like I don't understand why you don't get a deal done with him so you can tag Carlton Davis. Am I missing something? Yes. 1 billion % agree. I felt like I love Chris Scotland. He's one of my favorite players in the league. But it was like, I feel like keeping Carlton Davis should have been just as the high of the priority. Yeah, I don't know. I didn't get that one. They're just saying Carlson Davis hit the free market. That's just what they're doing. They're probably still gonna do it..

"Okay. So first off, I think, and actually you'll like this. This is more your thing than my thing. Yeah. I wonder if they're looking at what's going on around the league. And just saying, you know what? Rather spend that money on offense than defense. Yeah, let's go get it. Let's go get a receiver. You know, let's really upgrade that third down back. Let's get a guy who, you know, like a jerk, cannon, who can really be a threat. Right. And let's try to turn this thing into a track meet. Now, I don't know that that's the best direction for them to go. Yeah. But that's, you know, because again, I said it before the whole thing with the Jay-Z Jackson situation is it's not just him letting him go, letting him walk is half the equation. That's only half of the story. That's all we have right now, so that's what we're going on, but what do you do with that money? How do you fill that role? You know, if they fill that role with Carlton Davis, and then they go out, they use the money in the difference to go and sign a wide receiver to go upgrade their wide receivers or go get a back or something or maybe that's how they bring Trent Brown back. You keep that offensive line together right with that money. And then they come out. Look, for as much as we talked about the growing pains offensively last year, they were 6 in the league in scoring. And I think that they're close on offense. They're close. They played some bad teams, right? They ran up 15. Right, they ran a 50 on the Jags, exactly. What did the bill score against the Jax? Was it 6? Was it three or 6, right? And you don't get to sixths in scoring in the National Football League in two games. I agree with you. I think they're closer offensively. Before this move, like assuming JC Jackson comes back, they're closer defensively than they were offensively. Maybe they're flipping that. So that, you know, the other thing is, in terms of playoff, I understand it adds another probably double digit wind team to the AFC. Patriots don't play the Broncos this year. And the reality is all those AFC west teams are going to beat up on each other. So big, big picture or big picture in terms of 2022 season. I don't feel like this makes the Patriots extremely more or less likely to make the playoffs. If they play Denver right in a game that they play Denver, right? That's a game that probably would have been a win now is probably a loss..

"And to answer a question in the chat, could it Gilmore return happen? Even if it did, at this point, if you swapped Jackson for Gilmore, secondary's worse than it was last year. Stefan Gilmour was good in Carolina. He was perfect. He was a defensive player of the year staff. Like, I'll put it bluntly to you, Evan. Week one, next year, who'd you rather have forget the money? Just you get to be one of these guys out there. Jackson Gilmore, who'd you rather have as your starting corner? Probably Jackson, but I do, look, I think the bridge is not burned in terms of, I think it's Stefon Gilmore, doesn't have any ill will towards the Patriots organization on the whole. I don't see them bringing him back. It doesn't make much sense. But there is a debate there. I do think if you want to play devil's advocate Alex Stefan Gilmore at two for 24 versus four for 72. Okay. Casey Jackson, right? I think that one thing that you could look at with a guy like Gilmore and I look at this free agency class in Gilmore is really the only one that I could think of doing this. If you want to go 2017 and say, who is this Stefon Gilmore to JC Jackson's Malcolm butler? Then maybe it'd be like somebody like Carlton Davis, who's a free agent with Tampa Bay right now. But I don't think Carl and Davis is Stephon Gilmore 2017, right? He was a later draft pick. He's got some limitations and some flaws to his game as well. I don't think that it hurt a lot too. Yeah, I don't think that he's in that category. I think the one thing that you look at with Gilmore is if you could potentially bring somebody like Gilmore back, it does buy you time to develop that next guy, right? It does buy you another year or two to do it. I don't think it's going to happen just because of all the politics that happened obviously recently with Gilmore, but I look at this draft and I see, okay, could they bring a bridge like a Gilmore in for a year or two? Draft Kyler Gordon have him develop for a year and then become the number one or draft kair elam from Florida, have him develop for a year or two and then become the number one. Maybe that's a solution for them, but I still feel like this is way over complicating it and we're just getting back to the point of just pay JC Jackson and be done with it. And I can't get off that point no matter how many different scenarios I come up with in my head of, oh, they could drive booth or they could do this or they could do that. I mean, at the end of the day the simplest thing to do is just.

"Wanted to note is it seemed as though they took the talking point all week that why didn't the bills have Josh Allen run the ball more? And then Josh Allen was their main runner this week. So it seemed like they took that a little bit to an extreme, but I mean, it's a tough stretch here for the bills and they have the Patriots again in two weeks and it's just they're not in the best position and then sort of have to come off that patriots loss on a short week and go play the defending Super Bowl champions. It's just a really brutal stretch here for them. It is. And it's one of those things where I think if you didn't have that second half come back, you could almost not kiss the season goodbye, but if you got blown out, I think that that would be a sign that the team has kind of resigned itself to its current reality, but I think the fact that they at least came back and they showed some life there, bodes well because that first half just looked like a massive hangover from that game. And I think that there was such a potential psychologically for just for you to just be tamped down after a prime time loss like that. Then on short rest, then to have to go on the road and play the Buccaneers. That's a lot of stress to put on any team regardless of a team, a defense trying to figure out their best player, a team without still an efficient running game. And getting Josh Allen involved is a good thing. It's what they did to get him to help him develop in the first place, right? They wanted to establish him as a runner so they could almost like the Panthers did with Cam Newton spread everybody out. You know, forced them to decide between spying on Josh Allen or putting an extra guy out there. And he got some easy completions, got the ball rolling early. I think they stopped doing that a little and so reestablishing Josh Allen as a Russia. I think only serves to benefit him down the road. If the hits don't pile up. I was going to say the unfortunate things he tweaked his ankle in this game. Yes. Although certainly he still looked like when he needed to move and look, anyone who's had an ankle injury. Sometimes it's not as problematic to just sort of run as it is to stop and cut and stuff like that. But, you know, he moved all right. And look, they were there were inches away from a go ahead touchdown when he was on the sideline there. They also, I don't know. That Carlton Davis play on Stefan Diggs. That is, that is pass interference 99 out of a hundred times in the current NFL and even worse. That's a catchable ball. We see a lot of bailout calls on that. Receiver wins and ball is there and gets dragged down and that's a tough time to bury the flag in your pocket..

"Maybe to drive and a half probably ten drives a piece. I think what we had this game which is usually about average. You get to take chances in the nfl per game Yeah we ended up with a hundred nineteen rush yards. I love it too. Negative one for you know again. It's everyone last week was screaming. About how terrible around galas and here we go. We got one hundred nineteen yard said. Y'all shut up now. Well that's how it always works is a river last year. It was look. They complain about something that would blow up next week. It'd be awesome. They complain about have. What are we complain about this week. Oh good lord. They did so good. We have veteran. We had six pass. Defenses one interception a forced fumble fumble recovery four six six tackle for i mean. What do you want them. Do they played phenomenal given the circumstances. Am we lose. Carlton davis in the game. We had a deceiver appear to your. He was out there either. He had two tackles up two tackles so i just you know. It's i thought. Everyone stepped up really well. I was talking to richard. Sherman of i gotta look at the game film on him and it was looked. It looked like he was getting beep but he. You can't tell until you look at the game and wouldn't you be picking on him when you don't that he doesn't know anything about the system. Yeah and they were. It looked like he was in man coverage most of the time him. And you know so the best way to beat me. Coverages quick slants. You know th they were doing. That was quick inside moves. He was leading tackler on defense though. I mean he did his part. He got that fumble recovery and i. I'm not complaining about his performance. I thought he did a good job. Especially given the circumstance of them. yeah and especially. It got worse after davis. I mean their circumstances got worse. After davis got hurt. That was a big blow. Yeah their defense. Had one sack three tackles for loss. Three quarterback hits to pass defenses dip it. Oh my gosh can we. Talk about steve bella attack. You.

"Love. Be the my eleven fifty five. Oh man all right. I'm glad we got that out of our system and it's just going to be an issue forever but the the bucks defensively look. I thought it was the same bucks defense for the most part the cowboys just i mean y'all smartly avoided the strength of this defense. Why do you want to run at vita with Devon white david behind him when you can't block vida they. I mean no one can block mita but with the shorthanded. Interior line tonight. It was it was just a huge mismatch so they didn't run a whole lot. They through to the outside and the bucks were a little bit thin. After sean murphy bunting went down and he might be guy. Who's who's out for a while at this point. Yeah the thin secondary's going to be interesting to see how long he's out. And how the injuries impact ari pretty thin depth back there but vita like i think he somebody that kind of obviously. He was hurt for a large part of last season. So i think we didn't see him as a huge factor in the super bowl run but boy he was everywhere tonight. Amazing how you could be. Gm that you could be the kicker guy but also the vita guy you know like you know it really. Is you know the the nfl like they've you can. You can be forgotten about some horrifically bad decision by making an amazingly good one you know and vitas certainly be bailing him out there as as the bigger guys the jameis winston guy and he has a super bowl ring. Now so yeah. That's the way it goes sometimes via via ebay is just unblock bowl sometimes And it just. I think it makes us. Everyone's lives so much easier around him. But yeah if you're looking for some the worry about On behalf of bucks fans because they've just had it too good for too long at this point. Secondary depth is probably an issue. You saw a lot of zone coverage for them in the second half Murphy bunting is primarily their their slot guys. So now you've got ross cockrell in there and we'll see how that plays out over the next couple of weeks here but just overall this is a team that the pleaded twenty game season in two thousand twenty and now you have a seventeen game regular season and they stayed relatively healthy. They lost via for a little bit. They were without I think. Carlton davis missed a game or two late season they were without murphy..

We've been saying that for what five years into some type of catchy tune for them all right the started off now. Most of them are follow ups. I think there's only one fact check on there so again we're doing pretty good with these fact checks messing up too much. Follow up okay. Both the tampa bay. Times and greg. All of the athletic wrote books they wrote books on the buccaneers twenty. Twenty season in their super bowl win the tampa bay times. The author is listed as tampa bay times. Which is very straight. I don't know why there might be inside at my say contributors or something but the group projects with the team effort will. It should be because of the forty dollars book. Yeah kenan. I was just a compilation of all that reporting from the year. That'll take they do. Yeah that'd be does not when you be pissed off the internet. Why pay forty dollars. Will it would make them look really bad to think because of all the crap they pulled on your. Yeah the tampa bay. Times book cost forty dollars. Greg allman book cost fifteen now. The time sold. At least that i know of two hundred and seventy two copies. So that's ten. That's eleven grand right there. You know so. It goes back to what i was saying. These guys profited off of the buccaneers doing well and even going against the media trying to badger so there's that ballo who drafted oj. Howard was a lovey or cutter. It was cut her two thousand seventeen draft. Okay but in my defense Cutter was the offensive coordinator. So technically you well. If you only get real technical we just say light because he he was a general manager for earth although he didn't have much to do with personnel win lavi was here That was in love his contract. He have folk trawled or final. Say was final. Say or full control. I can't remember. But lovey smith controlled personnel. I know what as like middle of the pack Follow up who. Who's the second stringer behind. Carlton davis last year. Now i had said. "Well a ref- last time. We talked to you wild card weekend with six playoff games over two days and you pretty much didn't have any time to eat or sleep this weekend. We only had two games both on sunday. So is your home. Look by comparison on a weekend like this much cleaner. I can say that and not only do i have time to eat. I have time to cook. I'm very excited. That's awesome well. Let's start with the early game. The bucks beat the packers. Thirty one to twenty six tampa bay went up twenty eight to ten in this game. What was the key for them building on this big lead. I think a lot of it's just the pressure they were able to produce the packers reduced to having lucas patrick and billy turner on their offensive line and it gets shaquille barrett and jason paul. There really isn't enough. I mean they're used to having a top three offensive line in the nfl. In fact both of those teams are and without that aaron rodgers is under pressure much more often that affected a lot of throws and of a lot more often than we typically see second and eight jerseys. Jason pierre paul. I think that was a big part of it. But also i mean as many times as tampa bay receivers willing to drop the ball. I mean they are better receivers than the packers have in that secondary in that easy pretty good secondary. A huge storyline throughout this game was also the bucks on third down conversions. What did you see from them. So well under pressure a lot of it is just the packers third down defense was just not very well designed and this has been a typical problem for mike patton and his defenses. And i think the that the buccaneers kind of organised out of their game plan around what they would expect to see on third down and so you ended up seeing like for a brief period of time. They had one hundred percent success rate on third down and like a ten percent success rate on first and second down it was kind of nuts. But yeah i think for the most part. They anticipated some blitzes. This saw man coverage they decided. Hey you know i. I think that chris godwin. Or mike evans can beat this guy and this guy was usually kevin king but they were able to win a variety of throughout the game especially on third down where i think things were just a little bit more predictable for them in the second half. Tom brady three interceptions on three consecutive possessions. Third down to brady throws it under pressure. The packers failed to convert the last two of those into any kind of points. How we're the bucks able to hold that lead after three turnovers. Some of it is the individual talent of the players that they've gotten a secondary thing. Carlton davis is really put a stamp on the nfl especially in the postseason. But he's going to be one of those rising players to watch next season that will be identifying and he's played very well but i think some of it is just to have an enormously fast defense and i think was the kind of got a feel for what the packers were attempted to do offensively. They just had a better understanding of what needed to be done. We're the players needed to be in how to hit those landmarks because they weren't really being ton of their defense. From a schematic perspective. They were just kinda getting to their landmarks. a lot. faster. Whether against the runner of the pass the defining play this game was packers coach. Matt leflore making the call to kick a field goal on fourth and goal from the eight yard. Line down by eight points with just over two minutes. Left and tom brady on the other side of that ball. Instead of going forward here on fourth and goal makes this a five point game again really surprised by that decision joe. I thought that they would go for it on fourth down a reef where you land on this decision by matt leflore not to go forward on fourth down. I think it was a really bad decision. And i think you know based off of what my twitter timeline is saying. That's fairly universal agreement. Interestingly wasn't as strong analytical decision to necessarily go for it on fourth down versus kick. And i think you take a look at some of the calculators that are out there and you know it was better to go for it than to kick it. But given the fact that they had three timeouts plus they were ahead of the two minute warning. There's a little bit more time than you. Typically anticipate so from an analytical perspective. It doesn't seem like as bad of a decision. But honestly i think that you take into account some of these situational factors like the fact that the packers have the best red zone offense. Nfl history as far back as her. Dagoes which i think goes all the way back to like. Thank you ninety. I think that plays a role. I think the fact that tom brady is on the other side of the ball with a bevy of weapons and a healthy offensive line. I think that plays a role. And i think kind of every additional bit of context that we add to this decision makes those analytical models a little bit more often favor of going for it instead of kicking that field goal because they needed to have those two scores. It just doesn't really make a lot of sense of the was

"John was one of the best rookies in the entire NFL this year. He is shockingly it active for Sunday's NFC Championship game against the Packers. Apparently it is an ankle injury suffered late in practice this week. He tested the ankle out in pregame warmups, but it was deemed that he is not able to play. How big a loss is this for Tampa? Like his massive because when you look at these type of games, it's about playmakers. We focus so much on the quarterback, but it's about playmakers, making plays and Antoine Winfield junior flies around and makes place they have a decent enough secondary. Carlton Davis at one corner, Sean Murphy Bunting. Bennett had a nice pick six against New Orleans last week. But this is the team that gets the most points in the NFL off turnovers. 120 on the season in Antoine Winfield. Junior is a big part of that. It's a huge law. We'll get back to the NFL stuff here in a moment, but huge night the UFC last night at UFC 2 57. As we may have seen the end of a career of a sports legend, John is Dustin Portier knocks out Connor McGregor. It's the first time in McGregor's career that he's lying on the canvas like that. John did it feel to you like the end for Connor? It shouldn't feel like the end. But it seems to me that in this particular sporting and boxing in combat sports, the guy's never know when to walk away, and the reason they don't know when to walk away is they have a bunch of people around him? Who are yes, men and say, you've still got it. You still got it, And then somebody throws a big opportunity with a bunch of zeros behind it, and they come back. It's not like team sports. Where if you come back in baseball, you just kind of embarrassed yourself and you kind of slink away. When you go into the octagon like last night and you get knocked out, and you don't know where you are. That's a serious health risk. Obviously, I'm not telling anybody anything they don't know. But yeah, he should walk. He's got over $100 million. He's three and three in his last six fights. He's not elite anymore, but He is still I think, a lead at the box office, which means he won't walk away. You see the biggest star in the sport? Still, is he the biggest draw or it could be big comes back and fights again. Is that drawing even more subscriptions for the lovely folks over at ESPN. Plus, I still think he is and it Z just means that he can sell the most. He's not the best fighter, but that Z, not American Idol. It's all about everything that goes into it. We know that it's with every sports figure. It's like that. It's their personality. It's everything around that player. You can have the greatest player in the league, the greatest player in the world. But if if he's not dynamic, he's not going to sell tickets. He's not going to sell paper views. Connor McGregor still could do it. They can spin it. He's great in the pre fight. He's great in the press conferences, he talks a bunch of trash that's not gonna change. So he's still the king of the box office. He's not the biggest to me. He's not the best. He's just still the biggest, but this is the way I saw this fight. And maybe you saw it differently, John, But He did get knocked out, but I thought in the first round You know he was hanging around. I thought he I thought there were moments here where I thought that he really had a chance to win this fight. So based on that, you know, did he looked totally washed up. Like Philip Rivers this year, like ready to go into the glue factory or go into the broadcast booth. No. And based on that I do think that McGregor is probably gonna fight again. Curious what? Ariel how Wani thinks he knows this sport as well as anybody. ESPN MME Insider was on SportsCenter last night and was asked What is next? For Connor McGregor? I think he's going to fight again this year. I think he might even fight two more times this year. Look in mixed martial arts losses don't mean as much as they do in boxing..

"A whole. This wasn't from the start a great situation. It wasn't like the bucks were going undefeated this season. They didn't have it figured out early on. I mean, it is ebbed and flowed. There's been ups and downs. There's been meetings, throwing out of plays and then taking another step Further Cove in 19. Tom Brady did not have a normal offseason training program with these new teammates and in this new system with Bruce Errands So they've had to adapt and be flexible through all of that. And yet here they're still playing for a conference chairmanship. I think when you take a giant step back and look at it from a big picture Linz, it makes it even more impressive that they're in this position to begin with. It's a good story. I think it ends today. I think Green Bay wins this game. I think they win this game handling. I go back and look at 38 10. These are two completely different teams for a bevy of different reasons. One. I think Davante Adams is going to be 100%. He wasn't that was the first game back. That he had. And, yes, Carlton Davis did a good job of locking him up. But I think the Packers will be ready for that. And I think Antonio Brown. Not being a part of this game is a monster change for Tom Brady. I mean, we've already seen that drunk is not necessarily 100%. Yes, God wanted Evans is solid, but to me, that was That was just that one other element that Tom Brady could bring in a trust factor that he had. He does not have that and so to me. If you're going to see a bunch of points scored in this game, which I do think happens, it will be Green Bay having success and punching their ticket. Katie agree or disagree. I agree. Guys waking up over and over.

"I think both of these quarterbacks should have very good days. What do you do with Toronto? Adam's, um, to me seems almost uncover ble. I know you only quite passes for 66 yards last week, but he caught nine out of 10 balls that came his way and a bunch of first downs. This Tampa best double team him, try and use their best corner against him. Or do you just say if he does what he did last week? There's nothing we can do about it. If we can hold them Tow seven and change charge for catch. We got to take our chances. Yeah, Bend But don't break if you will. They don't Carlton Davis to shut down Michael Thomas. You know, we know hobbled, Michael. Promise. I don't think massive up as well against the route runner. Like Vontae Adam the play last week when we really felt like the game was over with Salazar's long touchdown, and that's where Tampa Bay has to be careful. You know, we saw them like a dog following the tennis ball in your hand. I mean, they can get mesmerized by play that Mr Rex their attention. And they can't afford to be giving up long touchdowns. So I think guarding against the deep pass is more important. And Adam is gonna get his We talked a signal bloom from the football guys dot com. So it sounds to me like you're leaning toward both to the home teams of my interpreting what you're saying correctly or no. Yeah, I think that the way Mahomes and Rogers have been playing, you just can't expect them to have an uncharacteristically poor game. Draught Alan or Tom Brady are going to have to play a new ideal game and their defense. Is there going to happen? Bring those quarterbacks down from their perch? For this to turn out that way. But my heart really is pulling for the bills and the fans and the community after the long road that franchise on understood, But we don't bet what all rights we bet with our heads, and we'll see if we get these two picks, right?.
