"Hi Matteo. Thank you for having me. It's so nice to have you here. Yes Fun. In reading fierce heart this memoir book. And listening to your teachings. It seems that quite young age you understood the primary role that mind has to play in emotional wellbeing. In, your childhood life, it seems as though it was very, very difficult growing up in the inner city life of poverty and racism, and there were some abandoned men and. And in fact, a lot of violence around you and so my question is, when was it that you began to look inward Lee for your strength rather than blaming the outside world? That's a really, really good question because I think as a child when I was growing up, I did get very confused and I was very interested because the adults around me their behavior and they were suffering so much. So this is very I guess empathetic child. So I could feel what was happening around me I could see the suffering and so that did make. Me Inquire what is causing this and I think I read in the book at just age five years old I turned to my older sister and said, wow, this is gonna be really hard. It's going to be a hard life because I could just see it. You know there wasn't a lot of wisdom we were poor. We were black I was like, okay here we go. There there's you know this is going to be you know a of hill-climb here And I think I just I. Just stayed really interested and as I got older I started to study psychology. Young teenager I got very interested in self-help bugs and Wayne Dyer I was reading in the fifth grade. I read one of his books. How did you come into? Wayne dyers book and were you living in? Compton at the time now we were actually living in a little apartment. We were up in northern California. We had migrated up we back and forth between southern and northern. California and we're in northern California and my mother was depressed and went to the librarian went to the self help section, and of course all back. Then there was Louis. Wayne Tire. And Louis Hayes so I think it was his book you'll believe it when you you'll see it when you believe it. And I remember reading that and I remember saying, yes or something with my mind I knew it and he affirms But I wasn't I. Didn't have the support to go deeper. Obviously I was ten and so but I remember men something like, yes there's something going off my thinking and the people around me, their thoughts it's making them suffer and it's leading to this behavior and addiction, and so the night just continued he knows I got older and older until I really started. Practicing Meditation like Eighteen Nineteen and when when was that that I do you remember the first time you tried meditation. We'll the very first time was when I read. Wayne dyers book and I went in there. Then in there I I the funny thing is I, told my mother was six anyone to go to school. So I played like I was sick to stayed home. and. Had nothing to do at that time our TV was broken and we didn't have money to fix it, and so there was a stack of books that was it and that's let and I tried to practice I. Remember I tried to count down from ten to zero and I couldn't do it. Of course thought came you know I was noticing that and going Oh. Side gave up for that time being but I got really interested a later when I was a part of this church called Gubbay pay here in southern Colorado Beckwith Beckwith who I adore and I've who's been you know great supporter of mine endorsed my book and I started to practice more, and then that led me into different traditional. Hindu. Tradition with Parma's Uganda. Realization Fellowship Centralisation down the street here in Carlsbad. I really got into practice there but then not led me into of the Dharma and I. I long retreat was a day retreat where I learned the pasta meditation, which Cornfield Pasta Meditation Sometimes, a translation is sort of insight meditation insight meditation. What can I before we get there? Can You? Can you describe what led you to the to to that to go on at ten day retreat like why would? Is. Not. Every day that somebody just like is. Packed up and goes to a ten day retreat. So what led you to that we looking for something Well I think when I had joined the self realization fellowship, I was really interested in meditation. I'd read a book somebody left a book on my table, and in this apartment I was living in an Oakland and I opened it and it just. A whole world opened. It was all about meditation. And I realized then that I wanted to live a spiritual life, it was like it was like death rebirth moment and was like goodbye to this. Hello to this. Of course, I want to spiritually based life in years how I do it By circumstances around you where they conducive to that spiritual life. Now I mean, what were you doing? It's crazy town now selling timeshare living with this crazy guy I'm sure. Yeah. Selling timeshares that was smoking weed I. Wasn't you know I had bills. I wasn't responsible everything was you know we're at that time I moved in with him in East Oakland it was just it wasn't good and I got very depressed and self realization fellowship was beautiful. But they didn't have any technique. They just go to these three hour meditation kind of kind of method to apply. Exactly. They would just say love God and I would say, okay, I'm trying but three hours later I didn't know it didn't feel like I was getting where I needed to go. Right? It was like the self realization happening right thought about my issues for three hours. I. Didn't know how to eventually if I sat long enough. Out of sheer to giving up my mind got quiet but I needed I felt as if I needed a teacher, there was an living teacher was just the disciples in the programs that they had it in. You know. So I started praying for a living teacher I need help my brain. Oh, very much I prayed and prayed and prayed, and then sure enough I heard about this ten day retreat in the desert and they said they you. Instructions and there's teachers there and you can talk to them and they're alive. You know it's not just books.

Carl Thomas explains the prospect of Hearables-as-a-Platform
"Carl's based in London and You know what's cool though is it's like when you're in a niche of a niche. You know I'm insurable. So being a niche of wearables you sort of start to familiarize yourself with WHO's who on social media in Carlsbad active for a few years as of I and I've gotten to know him and just like I really like his thinking and so when I got when I decided to do the podcast like looking at the list of people that I wanted to bring on in Carl was first and foremost for my hero. People that I wanted to bring on because because I think he has a really interesting perspective and You know I think one of the things that I wanted to start out with with this conversation is your relationship with Nikon Con Nikon gene the analysts who actually coined the term Cheryl's He and Carl. No each other in Carl's had a a good chance to kind of get to know him his thinking and so I thought we'd maybe start there. Tell us a little bit about like what you've learned from Nick in the time spent with them. Yeah sure so give context. When is that my company back in two thousand twelve? That wasn't really elaborate markets in London. And I say that there are a lot of people thinking about where I was really. There were people who will come together as community. Talking about some of the challenges the web was in dip applications in different markets. Where are half it to try? Like to get market penetration so I set up a community of web enthusiasts cool route is London and it was reached a chance to get engineers entrepreneurs investors people that were just infused where things together top CIA around applications markets and our very first event. Nick was my very. I took a bit more about love as time. And this is plotted to his. I'm not paper. where he talks about? Edition of herons to become him. Speaking buds it's nick announced himself as someone who is A. He announced himself as someone. Who's everything Wi fi incorporates? The snow plows right through to deal with that. Got My attention but mostly big based on will always doing. We're talk a lot. Around the evolution of headphones and talk law dates utility they can provide and he then at twenty fourteen announced his white paper by he looked at from his perspective. Marinates especially in Britain take stock into them to provide extra attention experiences. I'm then what that would look like shit. The Bowl to provide an acacias boy speaking in the house so I think think that kind of obviously gave us a lot of common ground to talk about what we have been thinking about central but then from my perspective that paper early Wednesday far in terms of giving us an inside was thinking. I'm really privileged. Have number charged with him and I think he's really Understand is actually. What's this ongoing experiences? Actually utility that we can provide on a regular basis of the physical products. And when can you speak to about different types of hair. CA- market over the last five. Six years is being healthy sceptical about their prospects purely only because he sees the potential paypal's has been something whereby they can provide an ongoing. I'm experiencing utility to people to really help so somebody's grandma I'm just. Yeah and you know this idea of a platform right. It's like as the world becomes more subscription based it's like like every single day it seems like the world becomes a little bit more subscription oriented. This idea of as a platform is a really intriguing idea. I am one example that I'll give for. That is the idea of hearing aids. You know as a subscription you know think of it as you as an individual have have some type of you know if you have some type of hearing loss you have a very unique type of hearing loss in a way that in of itself is like a prescription right in so your hearing care provider determines your prescription and then they program you with your you know you call it your medicine call it that you're hearing aid but it's that it's that a calibrated frequency You know like the whole way in which the blanking on the word the Audio grim the audio metric configuration of your of your hearing and and so you think about this as a platform right so a lot of the hesitancy with buying a hearing aid comes with the sticker shock that's associated with the high high price point. Because it's a it's an upfront payment so rather than that. What if you actually unbundled a hearing aid in the device itself cost X.? Amount of money and then your pain on a monthly basis for your prescription right. You're paying for that preprogramed that's catered specifically to you. It changes over time. Because you're you're hearing loss tends to depreciate over time and so you have this you have this hearing hearing aid that is more or less a widget but it's It is on a subscription basis that you're subscribing to your prescription and that's just one example of this idea of how these these types of in the devices whether it be from a medical application or more of consumer application You can start to see ways in which you can can actually layer subscriptions in such in truly make these things platforms.

"Host and today. I am with Whitney Ebert. And Whitney is a schoolteacher. Here third grade third grade but she also is one of the inventors of the Blimey box her and her husband. So I'll how put some information on that on the website but in a nutshell the blimey box is really cool thing for kindergarten through. Maybe third graders and it's kind of like if you imagine the escape room but in a box for the kids it'll keep them busy at dinner. So that was kind of how I met Whitney and I just I thought it was so amazing what she created. So welcome Whitney. Hi thanks for helping us today. We're GONNA talk about coastal Carlsbad and we're GonNa talk about the area Well we're also GONNA talk about kids and things to do with kids because I know that there's so many people that go to legal land and then after legal and they're like okay. Where can we go? What else is can we do? And you know something that appeals to appearance as well as the kids yes exactly let's start talking about Carlsbad and Coastal Carlsbad. If you had to describe it it in three phrases or three words what would you say well in kind of the area of Carlsbad that we're talking about today I would definitely say it's cheeks right along the coast very casual law and family friendly. What would you say about transportation? Like how bad is perking on the coast. And what would you do for transportation. Well it depends on what time of year you're here if it's in the summer. Parking is atrocious. And it's really bad especially downtown in the village where there's all the shops in by the beach is is parking is really bad so I would recommend either bring getting here super early in the morning or what's really cool is we do have a train station right downtown. Carlsbad in the village And that's awesome so if you're staying somewhere coastal are coming in from la or downtown San Diego. It's just just an easy stop right on the train in the summer. Parking's bad but the rest of the year parking's pretty good shopping shopping. Well we have a few miles in Carlsbad. We have the outlet mall which is pretty popular with some good stories. We have the shops at Carlsbad. which is a mall? That's kind of a work in progress. Progressive Does have a movie theater which is really Nice in new riegel movie theater and a lot of restaurants but they're still working on getting more stores in there but it's in easy place to take kids because it's never crowded ever so you can always go there as far as the outlet mall. I like about that is. It's right there by legal land right by legal and yes and it's ripped out a flower fields and the flower fields are fun to put on the outlet malls or right there. Lots of good stores. They're fun shopping. And there's one more hint if you ever are here during Fourth of July if you stand right above the flower fields like right on that street that goes to Legoland yes the best place to so watch fireworks you get like maybe ten or twelve different fireworks that you can see you can go. You can see all the way down to point Loma and all the way up until like maybe even past castaways inside you get such an incredible display. That's awesome. What do you think about hiking in parks? I think he'd you guys do a lot of hiking. Do we love to hike around here and there's some really nice easy hike so that even the kids can can hike themselves. We have a dog so we like to look for dog friendly hiking. Oh we'll go down to a bad keates lagoon which is a little bit farther South Carlsbad and it's really easy. I mean even my two year old can walk on these little paths author really flat. It just really pretty down there. They have a little nature reserve and they have a right along a golf course and so you can see Vr Golf. Of course it's really pretty and then we also go over to calibrate hills and it's a little bit more hilly. There are some like a water thing. They're like little man-made Lake or something but it's not as pretty there but it's at least a little bit more heike and my son who's six. He can hike that really easily and my daughter can do part of it but then I have to put her on my back for for part of it as well both of them you can take dogs on leashes so it's really nice. You also told me earlier about Hidden Canyon and I've never been there and you even the locals don't know Oh yeah. So Hidden Canyon is just a little. It's just a little park and playground it's off of Carlsbad village alleged drive and it's east of Alchemy Arou- just a little bit east of El Camino and you go down this little area and it's this little park down there and it's kind of tucked away. It's really nice. A great play structure lots of grass and it is kind of hidden in an especially with young kids. It's like one of those parks where it just feels all kind of tucked away and and closed it in so that it's just a great place to you could just let the kids run around and play. It's awesome one of the things I really love about. Carl's better all these little hidden museum. They're not the huge museums like in Balboa Park but their museums that I swear most of my neighbors don't even know exist. Do you have any of your favorites. If you're yes yes we do. My son is in love with the Museum of making music and he absolutely loves going to that museum and it's really great because he can really interactive for him. He can push lots of buttons here. About how all these different instruments throughout history made noise and what kind of music they make back and it takes him through the history of music and instruments and then at the end. There's like this grey area that super interactive and he compla- lots of different instruments. They have get guitar and drums all sorts of different things that he can be hands on with and he'll spend thirty. He minutes just playing all these different instruments and interacting with them and so he absolutely loves going there so we try to take him like we go there at least six times a year. Because it's one of his favorites and it's right by legal and it's like right in our backyard so it's nice that that it's so close we don't have to be going down to Belo Park all the time and we can just go to some great museums ray here when when my kids were little. We did the same and we couldn't get the kids out of there because you know they'd spend thirty minutes is playing guitar thirty minutes playing drums and then there would be the next instrument and it was nice because they didn't kick you out and it wasn't that dizzy. No yes it's always pretty calm and quiet in there and it's right right next to legal land yes and the gift shop is really cool to get her son. Always get something. There's a tour that I know. Both of us have been dying to take their kids to and ourselves and one day. We'll get to it to of chocolate as I have some friends that have done the tour. We're and they said it's awesome and so. Let's definitely on our checklist. Like we want to go visit there and so twenty years ago. Were there about right. Before Michael all started to our chocolate I met him. He's really an amazing chef as well as a as doing chocolates and he said I want and back then he was an events need us. I want to be known for the chocolate. And the surfing. And so now he's officially in Carlsbad and gives these really amazing tourists and that's somewhat somewhat recent because twenty years ago fifteen years ago. They didn't do that. Yeah no I mean because we see as chocolate the chocolate everywhere and it's so good so I'm just like oh I can't believe it's right in our neighborhood that we can go visit and taste it slam excited and two hours felt C. H. U. A.. And that's for plantation that's in Venezuela this way love and we've got to talk more about the beaches in the lagoon. So what would you like to talk. Shows love that we have we do have amazing beaches in Carlsbad. I'm a little bit biased. But I think I mean we just have amazing beaches. Because they're big and there's lots of and and they're you don't feel cramped. I know some of the beaches down in Southern and farther down south in San Diego a little bit tight and cramped we have some really great beaches in Carlsbad. We also have one of our favorite little places is. There's a lagoon that we go to and we really to this ligament because with my daughter who's two sometimes the waves the regular beaches can be a little bit big and and so at the lagoon. It's a say never pronounce it right. AGUA AGUA ahead. Yoda yes Agua lagoon. They have there's this little beach and and it's with sand. It's dog friendly. which is awesome for us? You can bring your dog on a leash and you can just set up at the beach and it's all sandy. There's no waves and the kids. You can just kind of play in the sand they can. You know splash in the water. There's no swimming but my kids. Don't they just go and get to their knees and build sand castles and play around and they absolutely love it. So it's one of our favorite little beaches to go to and it's tucked away and I grew up in Carlsbad and I didn't even know about this until I was an adult did you. You told me that you guys do jet skiing pedal or somebody knows their new paddle boarding but we bring our own. We bring our own paddleboard. So it's different. There's another place that's a little bit farther. Are there west on the lagoon that I think you can rent things to go but we bring our own and we can launch from this beach and it's right at the end of a street called bayshore drive and it's just just you go down park and there's bayshore drive and it takes you down to this little coldest AC and you can drop off your staff and then you just walk right down to the beach each and it's very it's just a gem. We go there with our friends a lot. I never knew about that. Oh that's I grew up here and I never even knew it existed and now we go. It's one of our number one beaches here so I want to explain a little bit about the lagoons because I think it can be confusing because there's two lagoons yes. Do you want to explain it since you've been in Carlsbad and you're on the coast more so the league in that we were just talking about that. Heavy owned Agua lagoon. That's more than North North Carlsbad..

"Welcome to things to do in San Diego I'm your host Sherri Manelli and today my guests will be my husband Ron Manila because we're going to be talking about an area that's really special to me because it's near where we live it's a little crazy as it's not focused on exactly one town it's kind of in the middle of several towns lacoste southeast Carlsbad Self Vista and West San Marcos is the area that we're covering today and just a reminder I want you to have the best day ever in San Diego County and so to keep keep the authentic neither my guest nor I are ever paid or compensated for any of the places we mentioned on the podcast there are no sponsors and and I just want to talk about places that we really love and my guests are I R- passionate about so what's the catch I am setting up a Patriot account and if you'd like to donate I would so appreciate that because it does take time to do this podcast and if you go to the website I might have affiliate links but those are going to be clearly labeled able or laid out I would only do affiliate links for places that I feel like that product or service is something that I would personally by for for today's show you might want to take a look at the map on things to do in San Diego Dot us to Orient Yourself this area is North San Diego County the epicenter honor where we're talking about is around Palam Airport Road and melrose which is about five miles inland from the ocean I guess if I had to describe grabbed the area I would say it's extremely family oriented as well as dog friendly people love their dogs appear and loved to take him everywhere it's also very very safe it's comfortable and beautiful so who would this not before I would say if you're on the younger side and you're looking to party ah you're looking for more action you'd WanNa go downtown but if you have kids this is really a great location visit and stay were about twelve minutes from legal land it's really family oriented area so let's talk about where to stay if you're looking for hotel you can find quite quite a few down Palomar Airport road around L. Forte that'll be about five miles inland but a great place to stay because it's so close to a whole bunch of grocery stores like trader Joe's stater brothers and sprouts and it's very close to a lot of restaurants and bars and even a few breweries it's also only about ten minutes from Lego Lance so if you're looking for something that's a little less crowded it's definitely a good alternative additive if you're looking for something very fancy and expensive the Omni Look Hasta resort is world famous they have tennis tournaments and golf tournaments there that are broadcast all over the world it's right there Lacoste Avenue and alchemy `real the rooms will be very expensive but they've got all sorts of amenities it's a luxury hotel the swimming pools with all the water slides are magnificent. There is a lot of boutique shopping at La- CASTA resort there's also the world famous choper center and there's several really great restaurants fronts there's also the possibility of staying in an AIRBNB and there's quite a few that are listed on Airbnb site around Lacoste Kosta and South Carlsbad Spurs transportation in this area you will always find plenty of parking it's definitely a place is to drive there's little to no public transportation so if you don't have a car what you can do is you can take the coaster train and go oh two points idea station and then take a lifter an uber what about shopping in Carlsbad there's not a lot of shopping in the area I'm about got to talk about with all the restaurants and bars and breweries and whatnot most of the shopping you would wanna go towards the one on one highway as you drive down at there's lots of little boutiques but there is the outlet mall and the outlet mall is close to the five and Pelham report road there are some other small shops around one of my personal favorites is uptown cheapskate and you'll find that at we call it the Dove Library Abry area there's a Vaughn's shopping center and that's it L. Camino real and Osceola parkway there's also quite a bit of shopping at at the forum and the forum is at K. Barcelona and I'll Camino real that's a pretty big lifestyle L. I guess Strip mall I don't know what you would call it the apple store is there the Jimbo's natural food as well as big toy store Japan does but there's a lot of other Bucci clothing stores as well and then there's La Kosta the Omni luster resort and there's there's several very fancy places in there to shop you probably don't expect to find museums in Carlsbad there's actually quite wait a few cool ones I'm not GonNa talk about all of them in this episode because we have another episode coming up with Whitney where she talks about what to do after Lego land one of the museums that I'm really fond of and if you have somebody in your family who loves motors news and mechanical things then they need to go to the craftsmanship museum the Craftsmanship Museum is at ten million dollars museum hidden in a business business park you would never find it unless you knew the exact address it's not even open all weekend it's finally open on Saturdays from nine to one it is absolutely incredible with the miniatures and replicas they have volunteers that are so excited and passionate tonette too great place to go they ask for just a donation it's definitely worth going and you can spend hours there if you have little oh kids I don't know that I would take them because you're not allowed to touch a lot of things and so that might be a problem. Another museum is a Gemmological Institute of America and the Gemmological Institute it's world famous there are people that come from all over the world and I'm shocked at how many people in Carlsbad I bet have no idea that it's they're not only that but they have a museum and they have exhibit that come so in order to see the museum and either take like a guided or self guided tour you have to make reservations in advance because of the high security definitely if you love gems and rocks it's worth going they have a huge library so if there's any kind of research that you're trying to do you can find your answers there as well another place that's I suppose kind of a museum Liam I don't know that I would classify it as such is the Leo Korea ranch if you're into old westerns you might have heard of Pancho from the Cisco Kid Kit from the fifties well Leo Correo was Poncho he had a long acting career and he wanted a working ranch and he would bring his friends sometimes Clark Gable other famous people would show up at Leo Korea ranch and so now it was given to the city of Carlsbad and they give tours you can get though sent to give you a tour or you can just wander around another thing that we like to do there is we like to get an APP for geocaching take go look for things it's just kinda fun and especially when the kids were little but one thing that you'll notice about Leo Korea rant is that there are about forty peacocks yes and the peacocks are there because they used to have rattlesnakes and they would bring in the peacock's Kaz the peacocks would eat the rattlesnakes it's a fun place to go oh you can get them to turn on a ten or fifteen minute movie so you can learn about Lou crews life and they've got a little gift shop it's just a cute I think it's twenty seven Acre place to hang out bring a picnic they've got lots of picnic benches parts of it are very picturesque so you can take some pictures there as well now you also have to make sure that you check with them and make sure they're open they do so many weddings and other big events there that they sometimes closed down early early especially on weekends talk about coffee houses I love coffee houses because I like to go there and do my work and hang out and and there's some really nice ones the first one that I would recommend is Lacoste Roasting Lacoste roasting is in that vence and library Strip mall that I talked about earlier La- Castro singers right next to uptown cheapskate which is a great place to go shopping and I love it because not only do they do they're roasting there they bring in really nice tease they've got a nice bit of bakery goods pastries there you can sit sit inside or outside it's just a really comfortable place for people watching and relaxing got very comfortable furniture outside it's really nice I I also like old California coffeehouse and that's in restaurant row so if you go down Pelham our airport road all the way down until it turns into San Marcos Boulevard so I would say it's probably seven miles from the coast I love old California coffeehouse because it's so o'cl Arctic they have really good food there they even have to lotto to start a great place to sit and have a nice tea or a coffee and then finally a Pete's coffee I usually don't recommend chains but what I like about Pete's coffee is the location Pete's coffee is right there at Presi ranch Presi ranches off of Gateway Costa Forte off of Palomar road. It's a huge shopping shopping center three grocery stores around there many restaurants and many are really excellent and a few bars Pete's coffee she is situated right there next to trader Joe's and next to the park and the park for bracy ranch has a Gazebo Abo- and some fountains there's a ton of roses but it's just so beautifully maintained it's a nice place to sit there on the patio patio and just people watch and with our nice weather it's pretty much great year round all right now it's time to talk about brees bars restaurants food and have ron here my husband thinks Ron for helping me on this part of course all right let's talk about wineries because there's some some shockingly good wineries in Carlsbad and San Marcos that you would never guess were here One of my favorites is to plank which which is just in a tiny industrial park in Vista it's right off of Sycamore and La Mirada excellent wine they bring it in they bring in the grapes and they do all of the processing for it make the wine in house and I think it definitely deserves a shout yeah absolutely it's a great quality quality wine they they source from all sorts of places and the winemaker really knows what he's doing so it's just great great stuff in a nice nice tasting room there yeah the tasting awesome closes at eight but if you get your butt in the doorway before eight you can stay there's another winery leffler fleur is in San Marcos like a uh not too far off San Marcos boulevard near the LAS Pozas exits a highway seventy eight and it's another one really nice people great wine industrial park doesn't doesn't look like much but it's a it's nice it's good good wine good times yeah and what I like about both of these places is that they they have painting nights to plank is going to start having it weekly on Saturday night where you can go paint and have a glass of wine and flora I'm not sure they're scheduled so take a look at their website website let's try not wine or beer twisted horn yeah this is this is a great place They specialize in hard cider and mead mead is is wine made with honey instead of grapes just really something different especially loved the decider they do the traditional varieties plus they have a whole bunch of wants at add fruit and spices and all that and they always have something different in the winter they do mulled cider. So it's warm with spices and everything and so great stuff steph curry's so we're only going to cover about three of them because in other episodes will probably cover other ones Carlsbad brewing is one of the newer places that opened up so immensely popular we were there only a few weeks after they opened great food and they're not even they they decided not to even have one of those grand openings because they were already too popular I think it's going to get more and more popular and I also if you WANNA quite dinner at this is not the place to go it's very loud because it's one.

"Carlsbad cavern in New Mexico just him a couple hundred thousand of his roommate to fly out the bugs each night there are so many bands here that when they fly out of the caves natural engines each evening at sunset they throw around in this gigantic tornado shape and they look like a dark cloud it's ominous an overwhelming to behold and like a park ranger said that night it's an iconic national park site to see right up there with old faithful Yellowstone yeah I would agree with that sentiment there really is nothing like about migration across by caverns for anyone screaming from bass this probably isn't for you because the idea of. sitting under a cloud of two hundred thousand ballots probably would give you nightmares but for anyone else it's really stunning and just sing them swarm out quietly into the sky for what seems like hours of really really incredible is essentially one giant feeding frenzy that's like a bunch of hungry diners at a buffet just feasting for hours and hours and hours but instead of eggs Benedict are prime rib it's masa Miskito is on the menu a fire around for miles and up into the sky for several thousand feet you than to get their food that's a lot of ever for dinner I really just order grab same I can't imagine like of it whenever I'm ordering GrubHub and wanting to feel like if I were to travel thirty miles and ten thousand feet in this kind of things. the coolest part of the whole Bavin Gration that was just how mysterious these animals are anything like there are so many unanswered questions and just mysteries about how they act the way they deal why they act the way they do the ranger who is leading the back talk when we were there is talk about how these bats. which Mexican free tailed bats they only live here in Carlsbad for medical through about mid October so not much is known about their migration and Mike where they stay along the way as are going back and forth to Mexico yeah my guess is a motel six maybe an all nighter yeah who knows there's like about error being bi or something and you know they are apparently quite ugly them. Jana song. don't get too close now you can see them up close though since they're so small they're flying so fast but the Rangers said that the reason why a lot of people are afraid of bats is because of their like gnarly faces I mean it's okay though I know they're beautiful on the inside yeah that's what matters of course there these things are about to win any beauty pageants but in spite of that they are really incredible animals and you have to respect that and just admire it because for one thing and like a single night is basking eat half their body weight in insects which is crazy they're starving did name one of them bad a boo boo them arm yes we she was so cute yeah the whole so the whole Connie it's nice to meet up to three tons of food that's a dizzying amount of food to imagine and by nights and they all kind of return back into the cave by don throwing around in that tornado like shape formation I'm and then they sleep all day hand side down from the cave ceiling just chilling sounds like me sounds great. but that that the other thing the ranger told us that I thought was so shocking and kind of hard to imagine is these bats are so small that up to three hundred of them can be squeezed together and one square foot of ceiling space that's crazy and also kind of horrifying to imagine I don't want to see that yeah you know there's another me something about how these bats help Carlsbad caverns get discovered in the first place even though the native Americans apparently spent time in the cave more than a thousand years ago it wasn't fully explored until the late eighteen hundreds when the settlers saw a black cloud of smoke rising from the earth yeah except surprise surprise that black cloud was not smoke at all it's actually bats eggs in the cave and they did so in such a perfect condensed crowd that from a distance it looks like this claim of smoke just seeming arising out of the ground. he so Jim why it is the guy was credited it as the cave man explore he discovered the came in eighteen ninety eight. he explored by man like a brave curious little man. yeah yeah that's one that's another more appropriate term and he he's the one who named bounce the ribs information down across by caverns like king's palace room green Mike ram bottoms head iceberg rock and big gram of real creative on that one Jim I mean definitely earns the name there since the big room is actually. gigantic yeah yeah from what we read that you could fit two US capitol buildings inside this room now it's unbelievable it's a seven part escape chamber in the world and it's the one and only chamber that you can tour on your own it's a long one and a quarter mile route around the perimeter of this gigantic chamber I mean it's filled with enormous formations and features like the lion's mane in the hollow giant's I mean and I can't forget the bottomless pit which isn't actually bottomless but it definitely looks ominous yes it definitely does the big room has lights along the trail which is pretty nice cause its swell prey of the hallway making it easy to see where you're going and feel the need formations on along the route yeah fortunately for those fights otherwise we'd be stumbling in the bottom at and that wouldn't and while I feels like you're gonna die by falling off a cliff for down a pet I'm always so worried I'm always so close to falling off my death so let's talk about how we got to the big room because I thought that was probably my favorite aspect of carlike Karen's subsequent yeah we got here by way of the natural entrance let's start with the amphitheater where the bats migrate so. before the evening before sunset where the when the bats come out this natural entrance is open for people to make their way down and the care of the old fashioned way by zigzagging down this long a pathway. that's pretty steep it takes a little while to complete. it's fairly strenuous but not as much when you're going down because it's mostly just gravity doing most of the work it's just really cool though because you're immersing yourself the way that Jim white and the initial explorers dead just surrounded by sudden darkness and leaving the natural light behind yeah I mean as you make your way down the cave under like to various like sprawling rooms I mean the whole experience feels more like a movie and it seems to be wild to be just real it's very wild it's very surreal and I feel like every corner you turn on long this national attention spell it just burst open to these extravagant new rooms with amazing views and features it's just breathtaking rally I'm speaking of breathtaking features I wanna talk about one my favorite formations I'm an **** and since route which is it's called whales mouth in a giant rock face that kind of looks like this huge whale rising out of the water maybe like a blue whale or something here it's. and I think the thing that I connect with so much here is that when I was a kid I actually made a connection with the whale and my parents yeah I know. buckle up because this gets weird my parents let me do one of those adopt a whale programs which I don't know if they still exist I'm assuming you do and I can never told me I guess the flip through like this catalog or something and like adopt a way out I don't even know was involved with that I was a little kid my parents from and will adjust X. but anyway I adopted a humpback whale on the midnight. and I loved midnight shows like this mostly black im back well I think she lives probably in the Atlantic somewhere I don't know. anyway. I would always late tell people like strangers are like route I don't know he would ask naturally like do you have any pets and I would say like yeah we have her dog Nikki and I have a well name and night and. you will probably thought I was so crazy and they were like my parents probably like what. but I loved midnight midnight honestly is probably select today will sliver of wearing time so I think technically I still have a a well we have a well in our family. I had no clue and I love this but you are literally justifiably insane idol of whales and I love Wales shape K. formations are nothing. man but those next to my cats mystica majestic yeah mystic Mattel effect and midnight and midnight what.

"Crazy it's really crazy creepy at but also when you're with people and stuff you're you're you're not like abandoned there in the dark af <hes> but of course i i again <hes> kind of embarrassed myself because as we're like turning out all the candles she also said like i want everyone to be completely quiet and end. Just you know appreciate the stillness darkness cave but for some reason my body has like a visceral reaction to the opposite thing and as soon as the last count on one out i started like loudly giggling uncontrollably and i was making noise and i'm sure everyone could hear me trying to stifle laughter and then my brother started giggling and if it's humiliating and i'm sure the ranger knew it was i'm certain imagine like when you start giggling. When you hummingbirds like you go like insane <hes> and it's also my same reaction to seeing the bats exit the caves at night. Yes it's just appear giddiness. I guess and that's all i can really talk it up to you <hes> but yeah it's crazy and it was it was so much fun and and then we she kinda slowly went around and let all our candles back on probably hating me at that point <hes> but all in all it was a really fun tore four really enlightening and like i said i was starving so i i went to the underground cafe and got like a yogurt parfait or something no cave flavored bacon. Oh no about sexy they should really upgrade the menu at that cafe and have like bathing room because when you're done with these stories you're starving for those things i know right very seriously that was a pleasant surprise that caused bed caverns cafe but the national poet guy <hes> mean that museum visitors visitors was amazing mm-hmm shockingly good and like i wasn't expecting that at all i usually don't i. This is my third time at carlsbad caverns made never stopped about cafe before back at the earth's surface. I mean it's a lot nicer up there because you actually get like this counter service cafe and he uses real ingredients from local farms i mean they had their like pulled pulled pork sandwiches and the <unk> bear barbecue sauce and then they had the chicken green chili stew and chips with the most delicious sauces. Oh yes so so good. They didn't have any snowballs though which kinda sucked but they did have fresh guacamole which also was really. I remember being like wow this is just so fresh stuff jeff. I know looked at geology. This.

Desalination Could Cause Ecological Sea Change
"This is scientific American sixty seconds science. I'm Christopher Dodd Yata. Winter storms have Wallops California this year and snowpack is piling up. But just a few years back. The state was wrung dry by a record breaking drought and more dry. Spell's will surely come. I think everybody agrees that we need more water resources Edina Peyton an oceanographer at the university of California Santa Cruz. She points out that her home country. Israel wants face the same problem real had border issues for ever and ever, and they don't have water problems anymore because they converted pretty much ninety percent of water use to diesel ination ocean. Desalination hasn't enjoyed as much traction in California due to its cost and because of concerns that the plants would damage coastal ecosystems. Both win the sea water sucked in and win. Leftover super salty Brian's are released now writing in the journal water Peyton inner team have. Fest. The environmental impact of the nation's largest plant the Carlsbad deceleration plan north of San Diego. Here's the good news scuba dives revealed that the communities of starfish snails seek you comers and other creatures that live on the sandy ocean. Bottom offshore have not budged since the plant opened in twenty fifteen but the bad news, the plume of salty runoff stayed intact. Much farther out than models predicted rather than easily blending with closer seawater. When you have a pool of salty water that doesn't make it prevents oxygen from penetrating which can cause lower oxygen levels close to the bottom. And obviously all the organisms that need box. Dejan are not going to be happy. You can systems offshore from the Carlsbad plant where are ready disturbed by cooling water discharge from a power plant at the same site. She says which could explain why the marine life was unfazed. But it more pristine sites, especially those rich in biodiversity like kelp forests assault. T- plume might do. More harm, the states already planning more ocean desalination projects up and down the coast and Peyton says her lesson is this there's tons of water in the ocean, and we can use it. We just have to do it responsibly. First step updating our models of how salty wastewater behaves offshore to ensure that our thirst for drinking water doesn't cause an ecological CJ. Thanks for listening for scientific American sixty seconds science. I'm Christopher Don. Yata?
