Spring Washam And Lotus Vine Journeys

"Hi Matteo. Thank you for having me. It's so nice to have you here. Yes Fun. In reading fierce heart this memoir book. And listening to your teachings. It seems that quite young age you understood the primary role that mind has to play in emotional wellbeing. In, your childhood life, it seems as though it was very, very difficult growing up in the inner city life of poverty and racism, and there were some abandoned men and. And in fact, a lot of violence around you and so my question is, when was it that you began to look inward Lee for your strength rather than blaming the outside world? That's a really, really good question because I think as a child when I was growing up, I did get very confused and I was very interested because the adults around me their behavior and they were suffering so much. So this is very I guess empathetic child. So I could feel what was happening around me I could see the suffering and so that did make. Me Inquire what is causing this and I think I read in the book at just age five years old I turned to my older sister and said, wow, this is gonna be really hard. It's going to be a hard life because I could just see it. You know there wasn't a lot of wisdom we were poor. We were black I was like, okay here we go. There there's you know this is going to be you know a of hill-climb here And I think I just I. Just stayed really interested and as I got older I started to study psychology. Young teenager I got very interested in self-help bugs and Wayne Dyer I was reading in the fifth grade. I read one of his books. How did you come into? Wayne dyers book and were you living in? Compton at the time now we were actually living in a little apartment. We were up in northern California. We had migrated up we back and forth between southern and northern. California and we're in northern California and my mother was depressed and went to the librarian went to the self help section, and of course all back. Then there was Louis. Wayne Tire. And Louis Hayes so I think it was his book you'll believe it when you you'll see it when you believe it. And I remember reading that and I remember saying, yes or something with my mind I knew it and he affirms But I wasn't I. Didn't have the support to go deeper. Obviously I was ten and so but I remember men something like, yes there's something going off my thinking and the people around me, their thoughts it's making them suffer and it's leading to this behavior and addiction, and so the night just continued he knows I got older and older until I really started. Practicing Meditation like Eighteen Nineteen and when when was that that I do you remember the first time you tried meditation. We'll the very first time was when I read. Wayne dyers book and I went in there. Then in there I I the funny thing is I, told my mother was six anyone to go to school. So I played like I was sick to stayed home. and. Had nothing to do at that time our TV was broken and we didn't have money to fix it, and so there was a stack of books that was it and that's let and I tried to practice I. Remember I tried to count down from ten to zero and I couldn't do it. Of course thought came you know I was noticing that and going Oh. Side gave up for that time being but I got really interested a later when I was a part of this church called Gubbay pay here in southern Colorado Beckwith Beckwith who I adore and I've who's been you know great supporter of mine endorsed my book and I started to practice more, and then that led me into different traditional. Hindu. Tradition with Parma's Uganda. Realization Fellowship Centralisation down the street here in Carlsbad. I really got into practice there but then not led me into of the Dharma and I. I long retreat was a day retreat where I learned the pasta meditation, which Cornfield Pasta Meditation Sometimes, a translation is sort of insight meditation insight meditation. What can I before we get there? Can You? Can you describe what led you to the to to that to go on at ten day retreat like why would? Is. Not. Every day that somebody just like is. Packed up and goes to a ten day retreat. So what led you to that we looking for something Well I think when I had joined the self realization fellowship, I was really interested in meditation. I'd read a book somebody left a book on my table, and in this apartment I was living in an Oakland and I opened it and it just. A whole world opened. It was all about meditation. And I realized then that I wanted to live a spiritual life, it was like it was like death rebirth moment and was like goodbye to this. Hello to this. Of course, I want to spiritually based life in years how I do it By circumstances around you where they conducive to that spiritual life. Now I mean, what were you doing? It's crazy town now selling timeshare living with this crazy guy I'm sure. Yeah. Selling timeshares that was smoking weed I. Wasn't you know I had bills. I wasn't responsible everything was you know we're at that time I moved in with him in East Oakland it was just it wasn't good and I got very depressed and self realization fellowship was beautiful. But they didn't have any technique. They just go to these three hour meditation kind of kind of method to apply. Exactly. They would just say love God and I would say, okay, I'm trying but three hours later I didn't know it didn't feel like I was getting where I needed to go. Right? It was like the self realization happening right thought about my issues for three hours. I. Didn't know how to eventually if I sat long enough. Out of sheer to giving up my mind got quiet but I needed I felt as if I needed a teacher, there was an living teacher was just the disciples in the programs that they had it in. You know. So I started praying for a living teacher I need help my brain. Oh, very much I prayed and prayed and prayed, and then sure enough I heard about this ten day retreat in the desert and they said they you. Instructions and there's teachers there and you can talk to them and they're alive. You know it's not just books.

Carl Thomas explains the prospect of Hearables-as-a-Platform

"Carl's based in London and You know what's cool though is it's like when you're in a niche of a niche. You know I'm insurable. So being a niche of wearables you sort of start to familiarize yourself with WHO's who on social media in Carlsbad active for a few years as of I and I've gotten to know him and just like I really like his thinking and so when I got when I decided to do the podcast like looking at the list of people that I wanted to bring on in Carl was first and foremost for my hero. People that I wanted to bring on because because I think he has a really interesting perspective and You know I think one of the things that I wanted to start out with with this conversation is your relationship with Nikon Con Nikon gene the analysts who actually coined the term Cheryl's He and Carl. No each other in Carl's had a a good chance to kind of get to know him his thinking and so I thought we'd maybe start there. Tell us a little bit about like what you've learned from Nick in the time spent with them. Yeah sure so give context. When is that my company back in two thousand twelve? That wasn't really elaborate markets in London. And I say that there are a lot of people thinking about where I was really. There were people who will come together as community. Talking about some of the challenges the web was in dip applications in different markets. Where are half it to try? Like to get market penetration so I set up a community of web enthusiasts cool route is London and it was reached a chance to get engineers entrepreneurs investors people that were just infused where things together top CIA around applications markets and our very first event. Nick was my very. I took a bit more about love as time. And this is plotted to his. I'm not paper. where he talks about? Edition of herons to become him. Speaking buds it's nick announced himself as someone who is A. He announced himself as someone. Who's everything Wi fi incorporates? The snow plows right through to deal with that. Got My attention but mostly big based on will always doing. We're talk a lot. Around the evolution of headphones and talk law dates utility they can provide and he then at twenty fourteen announced his white paper by he looked at from his perspective. Marinates especially in Britain take stock into them to provide extra attention experiences. I'm then what that would look like shit. The Bowl to provide an acacias boy speaking in the house so I think think that kind of obviously gave us a lot of common ground to talk about what we have been thinking about central but then from my perspective that paper early Wednesday far in terms of giving us an inside was thinking. I'm really privileged. Have number charged with him and I think he's really Understand is actually. What's this ongoing experiences? Actually utility that we can provide on a regular basis of the physical products. And when can you speak to about different types of hair. CA- market over the last five. Six years is being healthy sceptical about their prospects purely only because he sees the potential paypal's has been something whereby they can provide an ongoing. I'm experiencing utility to people to really help so somebody's grandma I'm just. Yeah and you know this idea of a platform right. It's like as the world becomes more subscription based it's like like every single day it seems like the world becomes a little bit more subscription oriented. This idea of as a platform is a really intriguing idea. I am one example that I'll give for. That is the idea of hearing aids. You know as a subscription you know think of it as you as an individual have have some type of you know if you have some type of hearing loss you have a very unique type of hearing loss in a way that in of itself is like a prescription right in so your hearing care provider determines your prescription and then they program you with your you know you call it your medicine call it that you're hearing aid but it's that it's that a calibrated frequency You know like the whole way in which the blanking on the word the Audio grim the audio metric configuration of your of your hearing and and so you think about this as a platform right so a lot of the hesitancy with buying a hearing aid comes with the sticker shock that's associated with the high high price point. Because it's a it's an upfront payment so rather than that. What if you actually unbundled a hearing aid in the device itself cost X.? Amount of money and then your pain on a monthly basis for your prescription right. You're paying for that preprogramed that's catered specifically to you. It changes over time. Because you're you're hearing loss tends to depreciate over time and so you have this you have this hearing hearing aid that is more or less a widget but it's It is on a subscription basis that you're subscribing to your prescription and that's just one example of this idea of how these these types of in the devices whether it be from a medical application or more of consumer application You can start to see ways in which you can can actually layer subscriptions in such in truly make these things platforms.

"Welcome to things to do in San Diego I'm your host Sherri Manelli and today my guests will be my husband Ron Manila because we're going to be talking about an area that's really special to me because it's near where we live it's a little crazy as it's not focused on exactly one town it's kind of in the middle of several towns lacoste southeast Carlsbad Self Vista and West San Marcos is the area that we're covering today and just a reminder I want you to have the best day ever in San Diego County and so to keep keep the authentic neither my guest nor I are ever paid or compensated for any of the places we mentioned on the podcast there are no sponsors and and I just want to talk about places that we really love and my guests are I R- passionate about so what's the catch I am setting up a Patriot account and if you'd like to donate I would so appreciate that because it does take time to do this podcast and if you go to the website I might have affiliate links but those are going to be clearly labeled able or laid out I would only do affiliate links for places that I feel like that product or service is something that I would personally by for for today's show you might want to take a look at the map on things to do in San Diego Dot us to Orient Yourself this area is North San Diego County the epicenter honor where we're talking about is around Palam Airport Road and melrose which is about five miles inland from the ocean I guess if I had to describe grabbed the area I would say it's extremely family oriented as well as dog friendly people love their dogs appear and loved to take him everywhere it's also very very safe it's comfortable and beautiful so who would this not before I would say if you're on the younger side and you're looking to party ah you're looking for more action you'd WanNa go downtown but if you have kids this is really a great location visit and stay were about twelve minutes from legal land it's really family oriented area so let's talk about where to stay if you're looking for hotel you can find quite quite a few down Palomar Airport road around L. Forte that'll be about five miles inland but a great place to stay because it's so close to a whole bunch of grocery stores like trader Joe's stater brothers and sprouts and it's very close to a lot of restaurants and bars and even a few breweries it's also only about ten minutes from Lego Lance so if you're looking for something that's a little less crowded it's definitely a good alternative additive if you're looking for something very fancy and expensive the Omni Look Hasta resort is world famous they have tennis tournaments and golf tournaments there that are broadcast all over the world it's right there Lacoste Avenue and alchemy `real the rooms will be very expensive but they've got all sorts of amenities it's a luxury hotel the swimming pools with all the water slides are magnificent. There is a lot of boutique shopping at La- CASTA resort there's also the world famous choper center and there's several really great restaurants fronts there's also the possibility of staying in an AIRBNB and there's quite a few that are listed on Airbnb site around Lacoste Kosta and South Carlsbad Spurs transportation in this area you will always find plenty of parking it's definitely a place is to drive there's little to no public transportation so if you don't have a car what you can do is you can take the coaster train and go oh two points idea station and then take a lifter an uber what about shopping in Carlsbad there's not a lot of shopping in the area I'm about got to talk about with all the restaurants and bars and breweries and whatnot most of the shopping you would wanna go towards the one on one highway as you drive down at there's lots of little boutiques but there is the outlet mall and the outlet mall is close to the five and Pelham report road there are some other small shops around one of my personal favorites is uptown cheapskate and you'll find that at we call it the Dove Library Abry area there's a Vaughn's shopping center and that's it L. Camino real and Osceola parkway there's also quite a bit of shopping at at the forum and the forum is at K. Barcelona and I'll Camino real that's a pretty big lifestyle L. I guess Strip mall I don't know what you would call it the apple store is there the Jimbo's natural food as well as big toy store Japan does but there's a lot of other Bucci clothing stores as well and then there's La Kosta the Omni luster resort and there's there's several very fancy places in there to shop you probably don't expect to find museums in Carlsbad there's actually quite wait a few cool ones I'm not GonNa talk about all of them in this episode because we have another episode coming up with Whitney where she talks about what to do after Lego land one of the museums that I'm really fond of and if you have somebody in your family who loves motors news and mechanical things then they need to go to the craftsmanship museum the Craftsmanship Museum is at ten million dollars museum hidden in a business business park you would never find it unless you knew the exact address it's not even open all weekend it's finally open on Saturdays from nine to one it is absolutely incredible with the miniatures and replicas they have volunteers that are so excited and passionate tonette too great place to go they ask for just a donation it's definitely worth going and you can spend hours there if you have little oh kids I don't know that I would take them because you're not allowed to touch a lot of things and so that might be a problem. Another museum is a Gemmological Institute of America and the Gemmological Institute it's world famous there are people that come from all over the world and I'm shocked at how many people in Carlsbad I bet have no idea that it's they're not only that but they have a museum and they have exhibit that come so in order to see the museum and either take like a guided or self guided tour you have to make reservations in advance because of the high security definitely if you love gems and rocks it's worth going they have a huge library so if there's any kind of research that you're trying to do you can find your answers there as well another place that's I suppose kind of a museum Liam I don't know that I would classify it as such is the Leo Korea ranch if you're into old westerns you might have heard of Pancho from the Cisco Kid Kit from the fifties well Leo Correo was Poncho he had a long acting career and he wanted a working ranch and he would bring his friends sometimes Clark Gable other famous people would show up at Leo Korea ranch and so now it was given to the city of Carlsbad and they give tours you can get though sent to give you a tour or you can just wander around another thing that we like to do there is we like to get an APP for geocaching take go look for things it's just kinda fun and especially when the kids were little but one thing that you'll notice about Leo Korea rant is that there are about forty peacocks yes and the peacocks are there because they used to have rattlesnakes and they would bring in the peacock's Kaz the peacocks would eat the rattlesnakes it's a fun place to go oh you can get them to turn on a ten or fifteen minute movie so you can learn about Lou crews life and they've got a little gift shop it's just a cute I think it's twenty seven Acre place to hang out bring a picnic they've got lots of picnic benches parts of it are very picturesque so you can take some pictures there as well now you also have to make sure that you check with them and make sure they're open they do so many weddings and other big events there that they sometimes closed down early early especially on weekends talk about coffee houses I love coffee houses because I like to go there and do my work and hang out and and there's some really nice ones the first one that I would recommend is Lacoste Roasting Lacoste roasting is in that vence and library Strip mall that I talked about earlier La- Castro singers right next to uptown cheapskate which is a great place to go shopping and I love it because not only do they do they're roasting there they bring in really nice tease they've got a nice bit of bakery goods pastries there you can sit sit inside or outside it's just a really comfortable place for people watching and relaxing got very comfortable furniture outside it's really nice I I also like old California coffeehouse and that's in restaurant row so if you go down Pelham our airport road all the way down until it turns into San Marcos Boulevard so I would say it's probably seven miles from the coast I love old California coffeehouse because it's so o'cl Arctic they have really good food there they even have to lotto to start a great place to sit and have a nice tea or a coffee and then finally a Pete's coffee I usually don't recommend chains but what I like about Pete's coffee is the location Pete's coffee is right there at Presi ranch Presi ranches off of Gateway Costa Forte off of Palomar road. It's a huge shopping shopping center three grocery stores around there many restaurants and many are really excellent and a few bars Pete's coffee she is situated right there next to trader Joe's and next to the park and the park for bracy ranch has a Gazebo Abo- and some fountains there's a ton of roses but it's just so beautifully maintained it's a nice place to sit there on the patio patio and just people watch and with our nice weather it's pretty much great year round all right now it's time to talk about brees bars restaurants food and have ron here my husband thinks Ron for helping me on this part of course all right let's talk about wineries because there's some some shockingly good wineries in Carlsbad and San Marcos that you would never guess were here One of my favorites is to plank which which is just in a tiny industrial park in Vista it's right off of Sycamore and La Mirada excellent wine they bring it in they bring in the grapes and they do all of the processing for it make the wine in house and I think it definitely deserves a shout yeah absolutely it's a great quality quality wine they they source from all sorts of places and the winemaker really knows what he's doing so it's just great great stuff in a nice nice tasting room there yeah the tasting awesome closes at eight but if you get your butt in the doorway before eight you can stay there's another winery leffler fleur is in San Marcos like a uh not too far off San Marcos boulevard near the LAS Pozas exits a highway seventy eight and it's another one really nice people great wine industrial park doesn't doesn't look like much but it's a it's nice it's good good wine good times yeah and what I like about both of these places is that they they have painting nights to plank is going to start having it weekly on Saturday night where you can go paint and have a glass of wine and flora I'm not sure they're scheduled so take a look at their website website let's try not wine or beer twisted horn yeah this is this is a great place They specialize in hard cider and mead mead is is wine made with honey instead of grapes just really something different especially loved the decider they do the traditional varieties plus they have a whole bunch of wants at add fruit and spices and all that and they always have something different in the winter they do mulled cider. So it's warm with spices and everything and so great stuff steph curry's so we're only going to cover about three of them because in other episodes will probably cover other ones Carlsbad brewing is one of the newer places that opened up so immensely popular we were there only a few weeks after they opened great food and they're not even they they decided not to even have one of those grand openings because they were already too popular I think it's going to get more and more popular and I also if you WANNA quite dinner at this is not the place to go it's very loud because it's one.

"App or wherever you listen to podcasts i'm brad. I'm matt welcome back to park land area favorite now. It's <hes> time to go into one of our favorite segments of the podcast. What was our favorite part of this national park but on this time time i want to say it together kind of three or after the connor three so it goes one two three than answer okay all righty one two three bat lantern tour whoa. I really thought i really thought we were going to be sync on that. <hes> the fact that we aren't it just shows you that i really really missed out by not going on a tory now. Unfortunately we'll have to do that next time and then i want to do contorno two thousand a heartbeat. It was so much fun yeah. We're going to have to plan that better next time. That was my phone well. I you know yes it was because as of that tour one of the three things that i would definitely bring would be layers because it gets cold as you go down into the cave and i would love to tour so i need to bring layers for my next trip. <hes> definitely like one liter of water surprisingly <hes> crazy how much water you drink from the hiking trails above as you've noted and and then going down into the cave back. There's just a lot of water consumption. <hes> this is something that has come up almost every three things to bring so bringing a lot of water <hes> and then for me <hes> we had to do laundry the last day and which was really frustrating because they closed at like seven and we just got it done in time but i would definitely bring some quarters for the park laundry <hes> exciting stuff <hes> the things that i would bring first and foremost make sure that you have a supply of snacks like popcorn and bacon and stuff because you're gonna want it after you do one of the tourists i assure you the other thing i would also really agree with the layers thing because of the temperature differential is big especially if you visit <hes> during their prime like summer months when it's really hot on the surface and then the temperature plummets to like the mid fifties so you almost need to have an outfit change ira recommend bringing like a light jacket or something and i have leggings underneath my short so there's little flexibility there mets like beyond say performance style layers disturbs him off throughout the day and always fabulously always appreciate that comparison thank you <hes> and then i would say the third thing to bring would be maybe need a copy of silence of the lambs because it's going to put you in the mood. Don't be a creep. Come on come on. I do love that movie. We watch probably standby place. Yeah i stand by that game. It's my favorite movie. I don't care how many people in a cave laugh at me yeah. It's really creepy but you know now in regards dream vacation gatien carlsbad caverns. I think we both have heart set undoing and on cave to yes. I would love to do that so much. Yeah i mean the park has a couple couple tours that they call wild caving and these are not for the faint of heart but they are from my heart because i want to. I want to squeeze through them. I want to go through them but then there's the spider cave tour which i'm not some scary yeah. I'm like not all about that spider life. I mean it's fine <hes> and then there's the hall of gray white white giants. Yeah i'm and sons less intimidating yeah. The white giant. I mean just sounds like it's a big space so it shouldn't be that hard right right yeah. Although i mean from what it sounds like both these are basically spurlock like years squeezing and crawling and you're in aerospace's for for a while there are long tourists here compared to the other ones. These are like four hours so don't be fooled by the name. Is that what you're saying because it requires crawling through you know squeezing into tight spaces susan. You'll probably get dirty right. You'll yeah you'll get dirty. I love it. Yes let's go back. There probably get scared but it'll be good. It'll be a memory that's for sure they'll stick with you and as honestly as frightening as these situation sound it also towns primarily amazing and for me it just seems like a real bucket list app experience right up there with like about migration and bike all that i think is important to do. I would love to do it and make sure that we make reservations a lot of wonders about this national park and i think it's probably one of the more underrated national parks in the system. Yeah there's especially there's a lot of elements here that are underwritten unknown like like the surface trails and so much to do beyond just watching the bats and stuff like that <hes> and then continuing with the dream vacation stuff. If we survive the these narrow terrifying cape tours i think would be really nice to stay at the trinity hotel in downtown carlsbad. Yes they were so nice beautiful. Although keep in mind that when we say downtown we mean that loosely and the word down to living in air quotes votes. There's really not much of a city nearby. Carlsbad caverns is technically not in carlsbad new mexico. It's kind of like twenty minutes down the road but attorney turney hotel is such a jam. It's long the main street. <hes> <hes> located in the old bank building. Yeah the building used to be an old bank so it has this classic motif very vintage lobbying and it's not a big hotel is only a few boutique rooms upstairs with this restaurant on the ground floor very popular restaurant yeah yeah i was so glad they can squeeze this in the table of the night. I'm like tuesday night or something yeah like what to their killing it but i'm obsessed with <hes> green chili chicken alfredo we had when we were there could and they had some really good new mexico line yes they did it was like an all new mexico wine list very impressive and this is right before we were going to the new mexico wine festival in albuquerque gas are really wet our appetites it was it was great so it'd be it'd be cool to i spent some time there in between cave tours and then yeah that'd be comfortable too and when the bats come out to eat all the mosquitoes does we'll just be gorgeous green chili. I love green chilies as much as bats love mosquitoes. You've you've been listening to parkland. "Wildlife and i remember when you came back from that. You picked me up so he can go into the fray program. Yes totally that was really fun. I'm glad that we made up for that. Conveniently named it is located at the bat flight amphitheater. This is really delightful because they get to bring about baths again and remember the park ranger. Having the dry sense of humor i mean he was sowing retaining the listen to you because it was like listening to ron. Swanson wants in from parks and rec yeah ron burgundy or something i i love the snark yeah. Maybe just like a hybrid like the best of both ron's yes around iran. He was great and i didn't even know that there would be a park ranger or one of their bat flight program so they know we're kind of early. In the season. The bats were freshly freshly back from their migration so didn't know when they would start back up again yeah and even the website said like they weren't gonna start until the end of the month and we're like oh. We're going to shoot yeah and then narrowly we oh we only missed like a week which would meant that are bummer. I think the only reason why we actually win. Because one night we saw all these cars coming out the same time so we figured oh that they must be doing ah yes and much to our delight it all worked out and we have to learn all about these amazing creatures and also one important aspect that he reminded us several times is yeah it. It's important <hes> no electronic devices whatsoever are allowed during the bath. I program in fact act. He insists that you not only turn on phones on the airplane mode but like completely off in a way and this goes for not just phones but like any other thing you might have like cameras cameras and i don't know what other pocket-sized or tricks people might have these drones no gosh now that's on harks right. Yeah that'd be especially awful because the thing is the bathroom really sensitive to light and stuff like that so if things potentially flash rush and harm their eyes or scare them or whatnot it could have serious repercussions meaning like they might not come back to the cave. They might go somewhere else where they're not being harassed by camera flash yano that can ruin their whole entire natural existence in that cave you know because their warm-up flights were they circle the cave entrance by the thousands quickly and quietly. We got to watch as we do. You're not destroy them but loud noises talking flashes on the cameras anything like that can just ruin it for future generations. Yeah absolutely just there's no fixing unsee if the bats just to be here they're not coming back so don't ruin it yeah like this is for the next eight hundred years of people yeah and they should be protecting it for the eight hundred years after with them yeah totally also really cool thing about the bat of real benefit of out of everyone putting their devices away and being quiet as reliable to experience this amazing phenomenon in utter silence and that just adds to the of the whole thing the bats all you really here is this this delicate light fluttering their wings or so small and there's such lightweight animals that they're not like making big flapping noises birds or anything so you're just in this really silent. Alan mesmerized state with these clouds of bats swarming above your head. It's really incredible really it really is i mean we sat out there for a good forty five minutes to an hour just watching them after they started flying out like there was just hundreds of thousands of them and it was so so so beautiful yeah i know it really does. We were there for well into darkness. They they go for a while. We left before the migration was even over there. Were still coming out cave. We're like okay. We should probably called night park land. Thank you for listening. We'll have more after a short break <music> in the montgomery county maryland courthouse. There are thousands of pages of documents detailing the horrific murders of of three innocent people to things from the early days of the investigation are clear no one knew for sure who committed the murders but some had a theory the about who engineered them soon as i heard the details. I knew my dad was involved right away. We know it was lawrence horn. I mean i knew well instantly. I suppose launch march. Everybody knew that lawrence horn was responsible. Nobody even bad but at the time of the murders lawrence horn was clear across the country watching watching tv in his los angeles home and he could prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. "And i'm matt. You're listening to park india and today we're talking about carlsbad caverns national park which evidently is one of my favorite national parks because i've been in here three times yeah two but three times making it my most visited national park in the country so in other words. I'm kind of carlsbad caverns pro not to brag but i'm probably qualified to be a park ranger here. At this point to be honest. You would love to be a park ranger carlsbad caverns. I mean it's just kind of like your spirit. It park you mean like dark ominous and smelling like bat droppings. Yes we'll definitely <hes> well. That's for sure thank you. I i visited the park with my brother. Brian and my friends diana annalena this was back in twenty sixteen kind of when i was getting into who at this like nature themed vacation thing with friends and family and we had this week long trip planned out. You can call it what it is. It's an obsession. It's an obsession so we plan to end our trip with a couple of days in carlsbad and we're staying in this shared coz those little cabin at a nearby k._o._a. Camp ground <hes> and while we're here we had this full day our first day in carlsbad caverns we book this ranger guided tour. Actually tours really wanted to maximize time here those cave tours. They're so great there yeah. You have to do some caterers. That's why you hear although just a heads up they do fill up pretty quickly so as far in advance as you can make them online the better <hes> because you you don't wanna miss out on these. I know if you do it too last minute then. You're kind of out of luck but there's still the bedroom you can tell that you're on <hes> but what we did here on on our first day was the left hand tunnel tour. I and the crazy the awesome thing about that is it's a lantern lit tour that is all the visitors holding their lanterns as they kind of follow the ranger into the cavern. Did you get one of those cool hats. You know like we saw that. You could buy their no no no. That's a bummer but you could have bought one cut off but i don't. I don't know massive mahar on look at for the bats. I guess so this this left hand tunnel tori last about two hours all let by candlelight so you're kind of experiencing this cave like i said the old fashioned national like this is what the original pioneers were seeing it was all like by flickering candlelight and we all gathered con created in visitor's center on the surface then all took the elevator down to the tour meeting area by the there's this underground cafe and arranger guide was was really great. She was good at getting everyone to socialize and mingle and do some icebreakers and she started things off by having everyone gather in this circle and introduce themselves us and for some reason i was like immediately tour laughed while my brother and friends were like the opposite side of the vodka why i did did my own thing standing ending their players yeah awkwardly corner yeah and so i was the first one to go and introduce myself and she asked me to introduce myself where i'm from and then as nice baker say what your favorite movie is so my okay sure so i want my name's matt from chicago and i guess i would probably say silence of the lambs and then this was immediately met with varied reactions of shocking laughter from the crowd shoe for that guy everyone was like i don't know if it was like fake rattled or everyone legitimate. I thought i would eat them or on the tour but i guess the theme of this episode is just verifying matt's. It's insane this yeah maybe that's true especially compared to like all the other movie answers were so sweet and finding nemo and star wars now like sandstone the lambs so this wasn't it it was off to a nice start and the tour itself is actually superfund very informative and and really need to see a like i said beijing candlelight and like nothing else really primitive and also weirdly made me really hungry because our park ranger kept comparing all the cave formations to like different foods should go. This is cave popcorn. It doesn't look like popcorn and like these are soda straws cave bacon. She would like do all these comparisons and granted she was accurate. It'd actually didn't look like popcorn and bacon and soda straws ause and whatnot and she even made like this obscure comparison at one point two something one of the cave formation she said looked like one of those like marshmallows chocolate snowballs they would get in like gas stations convenience stores or whatever loved those really really shouldn't skip lunch today. I'm hungry for cave bacon flavored popcorn for now. I want yeah. I wouldn't wanna snowballs like yesterday there so go ahead and but the hilarious thing too she yeah so she mentioned the snowballs and she was oh but i i wish i could eat them. I'm just i'm allergic to not and i'm like what coconut is not enough but anyway her heart was in the right place place and she was making me famished and then my favorite moment of this was when she gathered everybody around in a big circle again this time i was actually in my appropriate space next to my friends and we were in around one by one kind of putting our candles out so increasingly the chamber where and got darker and darker until the last person but they're candle up and it was complete pitch darkness and the point of this was to show to to to show us what the cave is like and it's natural pure state and that's just completed nothing. That's black and it's like you can't see your own hand in front of your face. That is so crazy crazy. It's really crazy creepy at but also when you're with people and stuff you're you're you're not like abandoned there in the dark af <hes> but of course i i again <hes> kind of embarrassed myself because as we're like turning out all the candles she also said like i want everyone to be completely quiet and end. Just you know appreciate the stillness darkness cave but for some reason my body has like a visceral reaction to the opposite thing and as soon as the last count on one out i started like loudly giggling uncontrollably and i was making noise and i'm sure everyone could hear me trying to stifle laughter and then my brother started giggling and if it's humiliating and i'm sure the ranger knew it was i'm certain imagine like when you start giggling. When you hummingbirds like you go like insane <hes> and it's also my same reaction to seeing the bats exit the caves at night. Yes it's just appear giddiness. I guess and that's all i can really talk it up to you <hes> but yeah it's crazy and it was it was so much fun and and then we she kinda slowly went around and let all our candles back on probably hating me at that point <hes> but all in all it was a really fun tore four really enlightening and like i said i was starving so i i went to the underground cafe and got like a yogurt parfait or something no cave flavored bacon. Oh no about sexy they should really upgrade the menu at that cafe and have like bathing room because when you're done with these stories you're starving for those things i know right very seriously that was a pleasant surprise that caused bed caverns cafe but the national poet guy <hes> mean that museum visitors visitors was amazing mm-hmm shockingly good and like i wasn't expecting that at all i usually don't i. This is my third time at carlsbad caverns made never stopped about cafe before back at the earth's surface. I mean it's a lot nicer up there because you actually get like this counter service cafe and he uses real ingredients from local farms i mean they had their like pulled pulled pork sandwiches and the <unk> bear barbecue sauce and then they had the chicken green chili stew and chips with the most delicious sauces. Oh yes so so good. They didn't have any snowballs though which kinda sucked but they did have fresh guacamole which also was really. I remember being like wow this is just so fresh stuff jeff. I know looked at geology. This.

Have you seen those companies that send you prepared meals for the week or the ingredients to cook your meals for the week? It got me thinking about retirement planning surprise surprise by now. You know that just about everything makes me think about retirement, planning, now imagine if instead of getting your food for the week, you're given all the food you thought you would need for the rest of your life. All at once. And you had to figure out how to make it last because you wouldn't get any more. You'd also have to account for parties and holidays. We need us way more food than usual. Would, you know exactly how to plan to make sure you and your family never ran out of food? Would your plan account for potential losses caused by things like power outages, or spoilage, creating a plan to make a massive stockpile of food to last for the rest of your life would be dotting task to say the least. It's similar to planning for retirement because one day, you'll be faced with having to create a plan for all the money you've ever saved and all the money you will ever have no new paychecks will come in. So what you have has to last for the rest of your life. Except this isn't a game or a hypothetical situation is very real and the stakes couldn't be higher helping people navigate safely through retirement is what we do if getting it right. Desalination Could Cause Ecological Sea Change

"This is scientific American sixty seconds science. I'm Christopher Dodd Yata. Winter storms have Wallops California this year and snowpack is piling up. But just a few years back. The state was wrung dry by a record breaking drought and more dry. Spell's will surely come. I think everybody agrees that we need more water resources Edina Peyton an oceanographer at the university of California Santa Cruz. She points out that her home country. Israel wants face the same problem real had border issues for ever and ever, and they don't have water problems anymore because they converted pretty much ninety percent of water use to diesel ination ocean. Desalination hasn't enjoyed as much traction in California due to its cost and because of concerns that the plants would damage coastal ecosystems. Both win the sea water sucked in and win. Leftover super salty Brian's are released now writing in the journal water Peyton inner team have. Fest. The environmental impact of the nation's largest plant the Carlsbad deceleration plan north of San Diego. Here's the good news scuba dives revealed that the communities of starfish snails seek you comers and other creatures that live on the sandy ocean. Bottom offshore have not budged since the plant opened in twenty fifteen but the bad news, the plume of salty runoff stayed intact. Much farther out than models predicted rather than easily blending with closer seawater. When you have a pool of salty water that doesn't make it prevents oxygen from penetrating which can cause lower oxygen levels close to the bottom. And obviously all the organisms that need box. Dejan are not going to be happy. You can systems offshore from the Carlsbad plant where are ready disturbed by cooling water discharge from a power plant at the same site. She says which could explain why the marine life was unfazed. But it more pristine sites, especially those rich in biodiversity like kelp forests assault. T- plume might do. More harm, the states already planning more ocean desalination projects up and down the coast and Peyton says her lesson is this there's tons of water in the ocean, and we can use it. We just have to do it responsibly. First step updating our models of how salty wastewater behaves offshore to ensure that our thirst for drinking water doesn't cause an ecological CJ. All these computers here I don't see the name apple no I, don't own an apple product not even.
