"Your co hosts, Gel done, and I'm Carlene Higgins so you guys? We wanted to let you know that. We are holding our regularly scheduled programing until next week and the whole reason that we are doing this is in support of Hashtag. The show must be paused and we're not going to chat for too long because the whole purpose of not airing our. Our show is to make space for black voices, who frankly they just have more important things to save right now than we do. As to beauty editors, having said that we're just GONNA spend a few minutes sharing some of the articles and podcast that you can be reading and listening to instead, and we're GONNA. Link to everything we mentioned on our blog at breaking beauty podcast, dot, com, and in our show notes I just WanNa say personally of course I've been. been watching. What's going on throughout the week? And you know I'm a mom. I'm a white woman. I acknowledge my inherent privilege and I see other people like my friends who are really talking about the fear that they have for their children, because their children are black or Biracial, and I feel like as a mom. It's just important for me to acknowledge that privilege that I know I don't have to worry about you. Know probably my son when he's a teenager. Teenager going out and like being shot because he's jogging through the wrong neighborhood or like my husband, and it feels like it's so obvious it should be going without saying, but I feel like I need to acknowledge it anyway. It's just it's not right and things have got to change. That's right, and I think that neither of us are ever going to fully understand the black experience, but we do know when it's time to mute ourselves and listen instead of talk. Exactly for me, personally I have done a lot of reading and reflecting this week some. That I want to shout out include Daniel prescod. She created whole I G. TV that is an absolute must watch. It's been washed more than a million and a half times now, and the first line of her caption is congrats. You woke up now. What and I should mention that Danielle is a New York based writer, and she really calls out so many troublesome things in the media, and she's basically like you guys I have been saying this for years it's the trauma is not new. It's just finally you woke up to it. and. She's just says it so powerfully that and there's so much takeaway in it and you're just. You want to act to do better when you watch her. Speak I know that Kathleen is another like bright shining light and the media space I'm here in Toronto. We've had her on our show, and you linked to her article on her instagram yet and we're talking about Kathleen Newman Bremen she. She writes for refinery twenty nine, and she wrote a piece called. The pandemic of black trauma will never end, and she really makes the point that you know. White people were always talking about Oh. We can't wait till it's back to normal like after the pandemic and she was just saying that black people don't really have that choice like the normal to them. Is Still People experiencing trauma people? People being murdered people being oppressed, and that was also a wakeup call, and another piece that I read. It's from at jewel. She's of beauty writer in the UK and she writes a lot for glamour, and Cosmopolitan and she co wrote a piece called three black women. Tell us how to support. The black lives matter movement that goes beyond posting an instagram image, and that offered so many good. Good insights and being actively anti-racist, because I do feel like there's a risk here when people see Hashtags, and they get behind them, and then can we have the same passion about a Hashtag on June? Second as we will on July second like we need to keep this going and top of mind and I just really want to applaud all of these women, especially these black journalists I feel. Feel like they already do so much work there. Frankly probably exhausted telling us these things yet. They are still using their platforms to educate. And I just wanted to like show them out. Say That I appreciate them and I hear what they are saying, and then of course were podcasters. We've got a shutout. Some of our fellow pod FAM-. who can be listening to in the next hour. Hour instead of our show starting with one. That's right here in Toronto Rachel. That's Great cultured is a Toronto based PODCAST. Co hosted by MIRA ASTRADA and be kwami and cultured uses pop culture is a gateway to larger themes that affect us all with an emphasis on diversity, and they just published their one hundred episodes, so congrats to them, and they covered in that episode anti. Black Racism. Racism AB Cooper George Floyd and some resources on how to be a better ally in the UK there's to Queens in a pod. It's a fashion and beauty podcast hosted by. Leeann may an Amman Layla, and they just released an episode called. Black lives matter every day discussing exactly what's going on right now and what needs to change? They often do delve a little bit deeper into anything that's. That's like millennial relationships in what's going on in the world. So that's a good listen as well and on the beauty front the beauty bakery founder Kashmir Nicole, which I know, we both love to have on our show. She just launched a podcast, called the ice cream social, and on her most recent episode that dropped on May Thirtieth. She titled that Episode That's just wrong, beauty and racism. It's an absolute must-listen as well and then we're always a fan of naked beauty with Brooke Denard. She's based in New York and she has really great diy beauty tips all the time. She also has a point of view on natural hair and skin, and she goes much deeper when it comes to body image and self image as well. She just announced her pregnancy to so congratulations to. You broke her bump. Bump is so cute and so there is a lot of content to listen to I think people can get overwhelmed. It's like what do I. Read I listen to. I how do I donate? What can I do so Jill you? You wanted to shout out another pass gas. Who has got something great going on that frontier? Right? Yeah, I think it goes back to what I was saying before is. Is like what happens beyond the Hashtag. We need to keep this momentum going and Dante Cali. He has been on our show and he's just Araya positively and sunshine. He's an influence or on Instagram, and also been doing a lot of social media, activism and his Lincoln Bio? He has an incredible resource that just links out you ways to donate resources to read people in government to taxed mental health. Health resources so it's really a great place to start and so you know, we do acknowledge that there's more work to be done right here on her own platform at breaking beauty when it comes to making room.

"It's red I ready he is Carlene I'm Gerry McNamara eight six six ninety right I if you'd like to get in on the discussion today let's go to Greg in Detroit Greg welcome you're not already a welcome to the show hi hi guys safer to thanks for taking my call I have a comment about the government directly sending money to people I don't think it's a good idea for a couple of reasons one is government over reach and the other is moral hazard this government over reach because in a one trillion dollar bailout you don't think there's going to be any pork barrel spending in there give me a break a small hazard because one thing I've learned from being a fan of your guys show is nothing is free somebody is paying for it even though you're not and handed out money to people you run into you then you create a situation like that that earlier caller that said Walter gonna give me a thousand dollars what good is it if if it's not tax free and where is that coming up with that if if or if you're going to give one thousand dollars to everybody when we're to whoever they are they should give it to everybody because somebody making fifty grand a year has bills to pay as someone making two hundred grand a year also has bills to pay believe it or not and I I think there are word there are already programmes in place like unemployment food stamps they can expand that to help people with their health care or help people with their student loans but just just giving out money to two people we laugh when it when Andrew when Andrew Yang suggested it but now all of a sudden it's a great idea call Andrew Yang was gonna do it permanently let's be very clear about that we we would never be able to sustain that kind of spending yeah politically there's a difference between you they gave government St look were in a pandemic that has shut down that has in essence shut down business an industry like nothing in a hundred years in this country that a politician stating that I'm going to give you twenty four thousand dollars a year if you're if you've got a you know husband and wife in a household permanently there's a whole difference to saying we're gonna temporarily we're gonna temporarily help you verses I mean it's like disaster aid that happens for every hurricane right and is our pork barrel spending there absolutely yep but there will be I know on the Tom cotton and it's not going to pass that Tom cotton owes at up to four thousand dollars in a household name that from mom from what I know that would be that would be limited right yeah that is that you're right you could get that if you were making a million dollars.

"It's her but rather ready he is Carlene I'm Gerry McNamara age six six ninety read I welcome and good morning thank you so much for being here just looking at the overnight markets here markets opening in Europe down anywhere between three and five percent Asia down anywhere between two and seven percent wow and as we know Dow futures right now down and certainly volatile I mean jumping every every time an update comes in it can jump a hundred hundred fifty points all right well before I've never seen it like this you have down a thousand thirty one right now yeah and can you look in five seconds later will be nine fifty that'll be eleven eighty whoa I just never seen a jump this quickening yeah that a ton of weight you know that there's if there's a buying opportunity that's where you'll see it in a drop down to the down nine hundred and then all the sudden you know the the selloff again continues to we the other nights when they they froze overnight trading the pre market at twelve fifty five it was down twelve fifty five and that's the day when it fell oh gosh what was that it wasn't the day that it went down two thousand I don't think it was that day when the when the market opened but it was the day that they froze trading uhhuh you see yesterday near down near for nearly fifteen hundred points yep again we don't have that much room we don't have that many days for the over that much value on the Dow as a whole two for those that many you know more days like that fifteen hundred now the thousand this morning you get below twenty and it becomes a perpetual thing a downward spiral because then everybody panics and then all the sudden everybody wants to get into cash or whatever everybody's cashing out this isn't a falling knife this is a falling sword I'm wondering is that why the president decided had the speech and and and you know take take the damage now get it done with now we get wet with I mean banning the travel to Europe yeah thirty days and look I we we need to get this done now right well and and the question is all right you look at the cancellations right I mean the cancellations have all this has a has a huge economic impact you know the president talking about recession thing and look this isn't you know an economic thing well actually it is an economic thing yes it has an economic impact that's the whole point of what's going on with the Dow these companies are losing money when companies start losing money that's what you see their stock goes down people sell the stock or if they believe it's going to go down well yep planning yeah you know I mean if if the airline companies are immediately impacted all right and then yeah the residuals from that right if they are impacted the service industry is impacted and ends on his own so again we'll see what they the house passed the bill last night with just several hours ago and there I mean it's I I'm I'm trying to read through the bill but there's they're they're getting into you know heavy heavy heavy territory including paid sick leave so they're setting aside I think the the the number on that that they set aside for paid sick leave at least temporarily was something like five million it was it was a small number fairly small numbers the president's talking about you know billions of dollars being thrown at this we already know they have thrown money I'm I'm talking about the economic impact bill this is not this is demolition not not spending for testing or anything else although right that bill from the house does provide for free spending but they're on recess next week so they're expected to vote on this later this morning in your your or or if you're gonna it's expected to pass out I said passed earlier and they're expected to vote and then who knows if the Senate even takes it up before they leave well the set has our own bill that's right point right so you try and put those tune that goes into reconciliation while they're off next week or or are they you had a Senate staffer come down with the the coronavirus they're probably all wanting to go home or work from home vote from home I'm I'm not sure that measure went because someone introduced that measure the other day or proposed it and I don't know where that went I'm not sure if they if they were still talking about allowing lawmakers to vote from home but the fact of the matter is is that you know you get into a situation where the government to start throwing money at it work again how much is enough how much is too much.

another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna "It's what I ready he is Carlene I'm Gerry McNamara one thing that we can't forget when we look at possible GDP growth for the first quarter is a number of Kansas city fans will take off work oh yes Dane and whatever the parade is this week but the number of people that will that will take off work and therefore for the product if he yeah of the economy yes but it will be it will be an interesting year to see how you know where we go economically speaking you know we're just we're cruising along your own of the biggest thing in in the favor of this president with an economy that you know went down last year from the year before is the fact that the labor market is so tight that people still have jobs yeah that that's the way it's it is it is a it right now that's the promise I mean that's that's the promising a part of what's going on you know a lot of it has to do now with now you've got the US MCA behind this you've got hopefully the the China thinking behind this at least for now now you have to deal with other fundamentals like again our trade partners and their economies how much shopping they're going to be doing at our store and then the whole coronavirus thing which I expect to be fairly short lived but who knows if they can't find some kind of remedies to to that you know and our ports are basically shutting down to China then I don't know where you go from there I had a few people ask you what's the big deal about it you know it's it's it's the flu well the fact is the normal flu that we see is roughly one percent fatal mmhm this is anywhere between two point five and three percent fatal yes so far yes yes so from yeah right in the end but that's that's the fear mmhm the the fear is this is a flu which is more fatal in there for if you look at it and let's say in Foley was ingrained into the United States we have eighty thousand deaths you know you're talking maybe you know two hundred fifty three hundred thousand deaths because of the corona virus in and that's why there is not a panic but I think a concern that isn't it it is specially if the virus is mutating and they believe that it may be and and and beyond that I mean it's it as you said a higher percentage rate but also outside the normal categories of or or demographics of young children elderly and people with compromised immune systems that might be have a greater effect in terms of the flu or be at greater risk because of the flu and and other you know widespread viruses two things when I flew this weekend I saw more people wearing masks than ever before and the other thing was I had a flight that was delayed four times mmhm in in sure from Charlotte to buffalo on Friday the last time we were on the plane sitting there what do you think delayed it for forty minutes Bose the blues and the pretzels were not on the plane round okay no I don't have a problem with that we're we're gonna wait there was actually there was actually laughter these pretzels are making me thirsty but the plane can not take off until we have the booze and the pretzels yeah or not there it's not pretzels them been serene pretzels in about like six months whatever little ginger cookies or yeah.

M. A. L. in rushing to DC right you must have heard us on that the end and we're sticking to that story we are but that's one thing that we have said that in this entire process think about this and and I hope they that I was I was in and out yesterday so I was catching bits and pieces of of you know of what was going on and then went to sleep at five a walk up to ten and I don't know what happened in that time period whether there's been a tremendous amount of promotion on the fact the president has been able to call one witness there about this right because that's really important when people think about courts and and the average person as we said the biggest thing against Democrats is people may not understand the constitution but they understand how a trial runs yeah they were under understand how a quart runs when you tell people that the Democrats don't want the president to be able to call one witness and never in this entire process had been wanting him to call one witness they asked the question why and that's that's the heart of I mean take everything else out of it he doesn't get one witness not one witness they don't want the president to have one they're on record yes they don't have a witness we just one ball that's it nobody else matters the president isn't allowed to call witnesses really here's your forecast talk is amongst most meteorologists that people have been commenting to us with a mild winter it's been so far and there have been pockets of isolated severe weather this winter but overall we've been experiencing a very mild winter same is true for today we have some snow in the Pacific Northwest that's made its way over the cascades and we will see that snow dump into portions of northern Idaho and Montana as you move southward Salt Lake City will be free of any snow flurries little bit of flakes flying in Denver for a high today under increasing clouds of forty seven degrees for Phoenix sixty nine and sunny Seattle reign through Saturday fifty one degree high for today it'll be in the forties overnight so no threats of snow there.

I think you came up with the thing that they say campaign money to their right under traveling and and then big they call Biden Biden destroys himself he's out of there and so yeah that was our we came up with that awhile back as a conspiracy theory I I do think that they don't care if by this guy or not I think the far left a special no I don't think they care and they're quite alright with Elizabeth Warren you know being the nominee I think that's part of why AOC came out I think she's getting frustrated I think she looks and she sees the establishment is by Biden she can understand why they're not backing Sanders right I do think part of her maybe she doesn't want to say and yet I don't know she did the other day when she was talking about how you know how she hates business and how business is evil in or that was just she was just she was at her worst the other day we'll get into that probably on tomorrow's show or Friday show about a see and she was all over the place I'm not vilify invisible maybe I am but what what what IM trench she could even should she was talking in circles she really I we talked about this before but her knowledge of the real world is quite childlike yet actually it is it is a seriously yes quite childlike yep and it makes you wonder on the other side of it where does a were on the other side of impeachment right uhhuh she's gonna be pressuring you know support for for burning in that end in in those moments leading up to convention probably.

And the thing wasn't wasn't just that I needed to remember all the old songs I needed to add to it as well all right you know much like my and my mom did too and grandma did. After the original Carter family they added on and so our generation the third generation we start adding on and did it ever wait like the weight of it. I never looked at it like that. Your family and it always has served me so well like coming home and that album was an album.
