"Day across the nation. More from West News radio's Carleen johnson. Just in the city of Spokane in the first six months of this year, 91 people have been hit by vehicles, many of them killed. There's no area of town that's immune to this problem. Spokane Police corporal nick Briggs tells K. X. L. Y. Drivers and pedestrians on phones cell had buried not paying attention is a huge factor. Mark McKechnie with the Washington F. X. Safety Commission agrees. We certainly encourage pedestrians pay attention and use crosswalks, use sidewalks when they're available, not be distracted and listen and look in their environment. Statistics for 2021 are shocking. It was 145 pedestrian fatalities in 2021, which was an all time high for Washington State, almost a 32 % increase from the year before. During the pandemic, driver speed on open roads with traffic no was blamed for the rise in crashes and pedestrians struck and killed. But post pandemic that has not improved. Carleen Johnson, Northwest News Radio Tomorrow will mark one week since the Newell Road fire in Click Attack County began. Nearly 62 ,000 acres have burned, including an unknown number of homes, outbuildings and farm and crop land. Yesterday, new areas were evacuated in the northwest section of the fire, but more favorable weather today is helping crews gain containment. Yesterday we did well and today we're going to do even better. So expect to see some more containment and a lot less smoke coming of this out area. Dave Robertson at Fire Command says the fire is now 50 % contained with more than 530 personnel working to knock it down. Let's check get a of traffic. We do it every 10 minutes on the force. Here's Kimmy Klein in the High Performance Homes Traffic Center. In Olympia, we still have injury an injury collision on Northbound 5 at Capitol Boulevard blocking two right lanes, so it's causing a back up north of Atrospera Road, actually more like Tomwater Boulevard up to the scene. Also Southbound 101 is backed up from Black Lake Boulevard and Southbound I -5 is slow approaching the scene as well past Marvin Road now to it. We're seeing some delays in the Federal Way. Westbound 18 from the West Valley Highway up the hill right onto South and I -5 where things break free. Still a challenge getting through rents those and curves on Northbound 405 right up towards Sunset. Southbound 405 is rolling slower from Southeast safe up the Kennedy Hill Hill. In Seattle we had a stalled vehicle South and I -5 approaching the West Seattle Bridge. Last checked it was still blocking that one carpool lane and was adding it to slowdowns South of Northgate but we've also had maintenance happening Northbound 5 on the Ship Canal Bridge blocking your lane right so that's adding to slowdowns from the Michigan curve into and through the downtown core. We had some earlier maintenance on the bridge blocking yourself on right lane I'm not seeing it blocking anymore but I'm gonna take a closer look and see if maybe it was an illusion. Hood Canal Bridge is moving fine right now but we do have another closure scheduled for 1 45 this afternoon expect so a lace -in and the muckle Tio Clinton ferry is going to be running on a one boat scheduled to further notice

The latest results from Tuesday's special election show a majority of Seattle voters in favor of social housing. The rents are going sky high. People can't afford it. The way it is now. Opponents question the practicality of funding the so called Seattle social housing developer, saying the city should focus its resources on more homeless outrage. For the 50,000 people that are below 50% of median and the thousands of people that need housing that we need to have those as our priorities and not a new idea. According to the ballot measure, the city would need to provide 18 months of support like office space and staffing. Despite the county declaring itself a Second Amendment sanctuary in an ordinance in treating said laws as if they're invalid in the ruling the appeals court said the ordinance violates a law giving the state the power to regulate firearms, not local jurisdictions. Juno says transportation is going to be a challenge with too few bus drivers at this point, and they've adjusted the start time to eight a.m.. Students to go in person will spend half the day at school four days a week and receive remote instruction from home. The other half of the day.
