"Hi i'm luke and welcome to the podcast. Are you good at something. I mean really. Good i bet you are. You might be a great soccer goalie or a champion speller or excellent at the piano. Everyone has something that they do. Well sometimes people do things so well they become famous for it. Carl lewis was one of those people. Carl lewis was born in birmingham alabama on july first nineteen sixty one. Both his mother and father were quite athletic is father. Bill played football and ran track. Evelyn his mother represented the united states in the panamerican games in nineteen fifty one. She was a hurdler by the time. That karl joined the family. His parents were coaching other track. Athletes carl was the third of four louis children. The family moved from alabama to william barrow new jersey. While carl was still little there. His parents established the willing borough track club. His older siblings showed track talent but his parents did not think carl was as good as they were. They wanted him to learn music. Carl wasn't interested in learning music. He wanted to be at the track with his brother and sister. He decided he would apply himself in practice. Diligently at the long jump the long jump is a track and field event where the athlete runs as hard as possible and leaps as far as possible. Interestingly around this time when carl was fifteen years old he grew a lot. He got two and a half inches taller in just one month. This put so much strain on his body that carl had to use crutches for a short time until his body adjusted. He kept practicing the long jump. He competed in highschool meats and one sometimes but more often his practice finally paid off. But at the time that carl graduated from high school he was a national record holder in the long jump. He jumped an incredible twenty six feet. Eight inches carl went on to attend the university of houston where he continued to excel in one thousand nine hundred eighty one. He became just the second person ever to win the long jump and the one hundred meters sprint. The other person who had done it carl's track and field hero. Jesse owens while at the university of houston. Carl qualified to be part of the us olympic team. Sadly the us did not participate at the olympics that year to protest the ussr invading afghanistan. Carl left the university of houston to work at the santa monica track club in nineteen eighty two. He continued to get better and was now dominating four events the long jump the one hundred meters the two hundred meters and he was part of the four hundred meter relay team leading up to the nineteen eighty-four olympics. Carl continued to win medals and set world records. He confidently declared that he would win. Four events at the olympics. Some thought he was being boastful but he did just that he not only won four gold medals but he also set records in the process. Carl competed in three more olympics and earned a total of nine gold medals and too bad for the skinny kid who was told he wasn't good enough. In fact carl lewis was so athletic. He was drafted by the nfl. Dallas cowboys even though he never played school football and by the nba chicago bulls. He did not play for either team after the nineteen ninety two olympics. The winds weren't as easy for carl. He was getting older and younger. Men were able to beat him. He did however compete at the nineteen ninety six olympics in the long jump and earned his fourth straight gold medal. In that event he buried his gold medal with his father in nineteen ninety nine. He was named one of sports. Illustrated's athletes of the century. He was inducted into the national track and field hall of fame in two thousand one. Carl lewis showed that hard work and perseverance. Along with natural talent pays off..

"Carl Lewis apparently didn't see the movie. If his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner prior to the Bulls game last night is any indication as a public service present now on Ly excerpts, Ladies and gentlemen, our national anthem. All right. We all ready. Anything is a showman. Don't think I've ever heard this. Really? I don't think so. Oh, say, can you see good timing. Wait. That's okay. He he actually stops and says, Hold up. I'm gonna make up for it now. Oh, man, That's bad news. Poor guy got the whole thing unedited, holding back in Jersey. How about Met did not ask you to run through it first. They know what they're in for it. It's a good question. Alright. We already Go south immediately. I like that kind of person can do. Early Lai What? So proudly we wait. Last clean. He's okay. Right? Right, right. I mean, I don't think you're supposed to interrupt yourself. If you're not that great, and that's what he does. For the way with the stream. Wait. Oh, no. He says. That hurts through wass. I'll make up for that star. Three. Do you honestly think you could do better than that? Like I honestly think I could do a better rendition of our national anthem. Well, he had moments. He had moments where you could hear some, you know, melodic tones it within his voice, But the parts that were bad make you forget About any good that comes from it, But I actually sang the national anthem once you did, Yeah, had a BMX race. How'd you do? It was like 11 years old. I mean, I'm sure you'd have to ask the people that were there in my head. I remember being pretty good. I would I would have done it a lot better at the age of 11. Then I would now like 11. My nuts hadn't dropped yet. Yeah, Yeah, I was like, what do they call that when they cast rate the little boys? Yeah. Yeah, That's where I was. That's what I was rocking it. 11 I would have been much better than now. Those higher notes where you're like. Yeah. You got to find it, but I don't think that you or I could do that. You gotta find a better way to do that. Yet within your range, you know what I mean? Right? You have to go like Ah, It's right. Ah, that's pretty good. The best thing in. Ah, good proved through the Ah That off. Ah, wass the 00 Those. Ah, that's sauce. Spang Gold. Ah! On. Uh ah. Ah, dude, I got to say on the on the fly, Do we need to be a big crash? Across the street and murder the national anthem at a monster jam. We should be able to get up there and show our skills. First Monster Jam back. Mr Digger. If you're listening, we want a spot grave to his friends. I mean that I mean on the fly. Not bad. We were one voice, dude, one voice and we could even harmonizing way had time to practice. That's I mean, that's just, you know, lets loose rock in it. Dr Alive. Go ahead real quick. So that was the ghost. I was doing The nationalism. That's my deep register. My good man. Thank you. Okay, I guess you gotta go. You gotta live alone. And I can just please I don't want to occur. It was the best colleagues ever made. Just retire. Retire Now you're not going to get any better than that, dude. Ah, we're going to come back. And dude, there are people getting something in the mail from China. That they did not order and I'm so fascinated by this. I don't know what the hell's going on here. I mean, I want some I'm ready to I'm try. I'm ready to get the process going immediately and see what happens. The fact that other people are getting them and I'm not make me want them really, really badly. And I I want to order them. If you got some, you think anybody listening? Got some? Oh, definitely. You might have gotten this in a package from China and we definitely want to hear from you. If you did, that is next on Drew grab alive. But first I would.

S. men win curling gold in two thousand eighteen was pretty awesome I know we have that audio replay that one as well because that was pretty amazing let me know when you have it this is a sport that the United States really has not been number forget being on the world stage has not been a relevant in but not even what people actually knew that the U. "Is there anything that you remember from your playing career that an opponent did that really? I mean, the number one seed of things that they ever did that pissed you off anything, Brazil does you, you said this before you have a thing against the Brazil team. So they beat us in two thousand seven they didn't just beat us. The crushed us, we had a player go out with red card ten minutes into the game. Game. It was a nightmare. Like, I remember I did my ankle so bad. It was like surgery. And I had to sit for six months. The same equal from ninety nine actually, and they were fief silly in the sense that they put everybody in the same hotel. So once you play somebody, you have to see them before and after the game, and they come in singing gray like allowed to celebrate but they were videotaping us in getting in their faces. Now imagine these old. With us in our tears in her eyes. Right. Because we are going home or we're gonna play in the third place game. And we're upset and we also got crushed and they're videotaping us like up close and personal. And they're like keep singing, and they and that's an all our friends and family were in the bar to right? So we're at, at the meeting place, which is the lobby and happened to be bar as well. And we're all sitting in there, and so we're all crying and mood or commiserating with their families, and they come in celebrating. But it was video cameras in our food, and it wasn't just like, hey, like we're just I just happened to catch you while on video dancing. It's like let me get in your face reality style, big brother. Let's capture this moment likes, you know, like the tears and actually being like I am going to. Next chance I get and in two thousand eight and the Olympics, I think they were just as good as they were in a four but I was not intimidated by them in a seven. I was intimidated by them by their antics, and how they played. And they're like singing in the hallway before you go and walk out. I remember being like because I knew there really good in. Oh, four. I it was like, oh, gosh. Here we go get no way. I'm like, oh, no. It's on. I am so tired of this. And it was like I don't care if you beat me, I'm going to like, get part of YouTube, like there were times, right? Going to talk with Marta? I knew I would not win it, but I wasn't scared to do it anymore. And then ends up we ended up winning Carl Lewis was great goal like Marta should scored. But like one of us went back and save this after someone gave it away like in a bad place in the field. So it was just one of those days where I'd like not today. Brazil, not so yesterday, you kind of mentioned it like oh, there's a lot of things that Brazilians used to do those teams that you didn't like now this is like that. Nineties, love they lacked, but, you know, it and then, and then I then two years later, I'm playing with them, and then I know where it came from and then I'm like, good on you like not good on you. But it's like I understand. Right. Right. You know, you are batting way over what the circumstances ever provided for you. And you might you haven't had the experience to know that, that what this does to somebody else. Right. But, but it's real Kate because we talk about it like with this whole US thirteen nothing like other teams are going to now be a little bit more up to play the US. Like you just said you were more up the next time to play Brazil. Yeah. Now let's be honest, what the US did against Thailand. Totally different than what Brazil it stayed in the hotel. That's more direct way Mark direct completely. That was that was aimed at you. I don't know that what Megan repeat. Oh, did was aimed Thailand in any way? No, it was just not. Maybe I mean, that's they're not gonna apologize for that moment..

"And what happens, but will that affect decisions, you think July. Yeah. Absolutely. I do you know, I I don't think it is the the decisive factor. But look if if Toronto loses a series, then it becomes pretty easy for quite say outta here. I want to go back home to southern California. He's as it has been the case for more than a, you know, so Toronto really needs to show him something if if they're going to you know, push that over the edge. So I, you know, I think it does matter. I don't think it's it's it's a huge like if Toronto goes to the file does that mean that quite definitely reciting? No. But, but I think it it increases the chance I think it makes it a lot easier for him to say, I'm outta here. If they lose him the semi finals, thanks for your time. Thanks for the knowledge. My man, we'll talk to you down the road that got deputy NBA columnist for the sporting news. Follow him on Twitter at Sean deputy giants baseball coming up here on the sports leader, Madison. "My guest is Carl Lewis, and you know, what I love about this opportunity on the audience channel two thirty nine is I get a long period of time about two hours sitting down with these guests. I hope you've got a chance to see Freddie, Roach the boxing promoter. There was so much that didn't even make it. He was that entertaining and the audience loved him Carl Lewis. You know, one of the greatest sprinters most decorated track athletes of all time in a couple of topics that will stand out, and I want to bring them to your attention. I go back to win. Ben Johnson from Canada surprised everybody in one Olympic gold in Seoul, South Korea. Well, Karl finished runner up. But Carl knew that Ben was cheating. Couldn't prove it Ben test positive and Carl wins the gold medal. But I asked Carl when do you know when you have this drop in time, Mike somebody's doing something that they shouldn't be doing because it takes a long long time to drop even a tenth of a second. When you're a sprinter and here's Carl Lewis from tonight's undeniable. Ben Johnson Eighty-six then right away because the word on the street per se was that his coach gave it to people. And then all of a sudden he pops kind of out of nowhere starts running really fast as a sprinter. When do you know like how much do you drop in time it before you guys notice? Yeah. That's good question. If if you're young you can do it up until you're twenty twenty one because you could grow and all think things once you're you're twenties. It it goes small increments. Just to give you an example when I was nineteen or twenty I ran like nine nine seven, and then I ended up running nine eight six at thirty. So took me ten years to get one tenth of a second. So you have someone who was running ten to and then two years later, they're running nine nine it just doesn't make sense when you're twenty five years old. So that's what we know. Isn't that interesting because you know, we look at somebody improving and you go oh my gosh. Look at what they're running now, but the sprinters in their world, they're like, none a- that doesn't happen. And that led to the topic of you sane bolt. And what Karl thinks of you sane bolt. Two thousand eight you're quoted as questioning you sane bolts times once again going back to what we talked about. When you have that precipitous drop, then great runners, great sprinters, take notice. What was it about bolt that made you take notice that maybe this wasn't on the up and up? My thing was I didn't accuse anyone of anything. But what I said is that we have to question if someone drops that fast like that. If you don't then you're crazier fool or something. Whatever I said. So of course, it becomes personal. But my issue is with drugs has always been the brand, you know, being a sport that people think are on drugs. It's it's bad for the brand. And we I didn't trust it. And so I put it out there. And you know, what I have people asked me. What are you saying? I said already said what I said. So there's nothing to change. And I stand by it. It's not personal. But you still question bolts times. So you have course, I question that it said if it's mean, I'm saying he's on it. But we should question it when. When I jumped ran nine eight six there's a question anyone that does that kind of drought. So and I didn't say anywhere. Oh, yeah. He's on it. I said we should question it because if you don't then that it's ridiculous. That's it. And I stand by that. Absolutely. Right. That's Carl Lewis I sit down with Carl tonight on the show undeniable on the audience channel that's to nine directtv. As far as like, how far do you go to question? Somebody's times. It should should everybody question everybody when it comes to track and field, and I know that you saying Bolden Carl Lewis, they they're not friends..

"So I'll give you a fifty Wunderlich is an option does that interest. You at all. No, I'd rather be fast can't show that off at the beach. Hey, baby. Here's my Wunderlich. Because then if you say, I got a perfect score in the Wunderlich, then you have to explain the Wunderlich. Why do they call it? What did you lick? What's the wonder? Why did you get crappy grades in college? It's like, you're you're very smart though, you can figure out the pollen test on one test. I was really smart, and then they're going. Oh, hey, Mr. Wunderlich now. I'd rather be. I'd rather go four five how about at eleven in chance. I mean, we need to say what that means. You know, what they say about guys with big hands? They need big loves. Speaking of speed coral Lewis is my guest on undeniable tomorrow night, and I sat down with him. And we talked about speed and something that will play for you tomorrow to get you ready for this interview with Carl Lewis, and we did talk about the validity of you same bolt because Carl Lewis questions how fast you same bold is. And he said, we'd be crazy not to or you know, crazy not to question that because you go back to Ben Johnson. When Ben Johnson came out of nowhere. And he won the Olympic gold in Seoul, South Korea and Carl lost. And then it came out that Ben had failed a drug test. He talks about when you know, a sprinter is doing something illegal. You can tell by how how much lower their time is. And so we talk about that as well. That's on undeniable tomorrow night on audience channel thirty nine. We'll come back with Mike Floreal and get his thoughts on what's next with the patriots and Robert Kraft. Could he say? See craft stepping down as the owner..

"The agility for the Westminster dog show yesterday, I did watch this. This was a video that became viral. And I saw it, and I couldn't love it more. That was Rudy the bulldog that one through the agility course, like like shut out of health right now. This is like the Carl Lewis of BULLDOGS believable. Yeah. I've never seen. I mean, my bulldog is a faster bulldog than most. Yes. And and this was just a different level. I mean, he never had a dog with balls. He's dog should not have balls. Does this dog have balls this? He asked Rudy unless they, you know. But Rubio's Kildee yesterday on the on the obstacle course, man. I thought it was smoking. Yeah. We gotta put that video out. So people know we're talking about as amazing I felt bad. I was running my bulldog around yesterday, and she was really really tired really quick. And I said, oh, man, we're getting into the she's eight now she got tired really quick in dog. Poop was think Rudy. Who'd he looks a little bit more athletic than your dog. Well, my dog, you don't know if you saw your dog now, I've close to be cheese, she's fit and when she was younger like three or four years old she'd give Rudy a run for his money. I'm telling you in a race between Rudy and my dog. But yeah, yesterday yesterday was like one of those like dad, I can't I can't do this. I like the ball to throw in the ball. It's great. We had some good times. But but the couches where I will. I will hang out now. For the remainder. So it was a little bit of a little bit of a sad day. All right. It is boomer and geo on the fan across the country on CBS sports network..
