Tell me this. This is the week this is the weekend the buffs get back on track right going up against arizona shirley. Something's gotta give. Well something has to give to worst power five teams in the country right now and You know it looks for senior right now at a four game losing streak but there was always got a seventeen game losing streak coming in here so there. Last winter was in boulder actually two years ago so i. I think that'll be the week. But you know i don't have confidence a team. That's that's a tough game. try to project. yeah it really man. It's crazy right. Take me back to a couple of weeks ago brian. When you know the buffs beat the bears and then the next week. They're they're goingto. Texas a. and m. is like a night and day difference between those first couple of weeks to where we are. Now we're not only talking bowl games. But i was talking to You know one guy radio show in the pac twelve and we were talking about boy if the buster just good controls role impacts coach twice in a row and we're far from that so things have changed. I obviously even an am game. They didn't play while offensively. The scored seven points and and that's just really continued over the last week. And you know they've got a little bit better than the fourteen points to weeks ago. Which is the most. They've stored us since they played. Unc so it's a little bit better but man that's just brutal really is man. I mean when you look at the numbers brian. We're talking historic numbers right historically low numbers for this offense. Yeah it's really bad. I mean it's i mean we're talking i mean they're hundred twenty nine thousand one hundred and thirty teams in the f. b. s. and scoring. Not but you take out the unc game which you know offense unc. But that's fcs opponent the buster averaging eight and a half points a game against fbi competition. I mean that's that's insane. I mean it's it is your story you know one of the worst offenses we've seen it. See you in a long time. So what what what happened. Over the bye week brian. You know you always wonder if there are going to be changes or they're going to be some real deep research cheers to what to do Can you speak on anything. There that might give some buffs fans some hope. It's interesting because you know buff fans one of the things like this happen on the fan base is now. They want heads to roll right. Reps is really bizarre in my opinion but And that just shows you that they're so committed to let's get brennan lewis right but it's hard for you imagine. I don't know how you go from a we're gonna give jimmy carter any reps in the fourth quarter all of a sudden he's starting or you know being a big part of your offense but we'll see i anticipate they're still gonna roll with brennan lewis and I think it should be short leash. But they haven't shown that yet so until they do. I've gotta think they're gonna continue to roll him. Which again just leaves us with. A lot of these questions Brian how is there a hot see right now for karl rove because last last year was so great it was a covert year. But we were still excited about it. We know they kinda played perhaps not the strongest portion of the pack twelve schedule but either way. They won the games that were in front of them. Carl named pac twelve head coach of the year. Reverse that to one of the like bottom to worse offenses in college football right now. And you're looking at one four record in going up against an arizona team. That's really bad. Karl like his heat. How does that seat right now. I don't think he's hot right now because this contract i mean he's really only in your to and and technically it's not even costa full seasons worth of games. I mean he's coats. Eleven games a see you at this point. So i mean he's still owed think eleven million dollars or something like that and see you have that kind of money unless there's a booster that all of a sudden says rich george. I'm gonna give you eleven million dollars to get rid of this guy. I can't imagine that happened. So i i. I think he's set for now. But i do think there are guys on the staff who are on the hot seat you know to me. It starts dare shivarine who always got along with. And he's he's a good guy And he's a buff but it hasn't worked out right now and i think he's number one on the hot seat less and so i think what i'm looking at more. So is that staff and seeing. What kind of changes might happen once. That was finishing in november. We're you know handful. The half the half the games here. We're in pac twelve action near you know so if you can get a couple of wins in a row you could. You could change things around and starts with that arizona side of things and then i. I believe it's at cal next brian. So when you when you look around you think maybe there are some opportunities here for the buffs to kinda right this ship. At least at least a couple of wins to get to that three or four mark and maybe people will feel a little bit better. Yeah there is an opportunity here. You know there's a stat here. There's four power five teams right now. Do not have an fbi s. win and three of them are cu you arizona and cal so you know that's gonna change in the next week's and the bus would love to get both of those. I mean there's an opportunity here. They're playing two teams. That are struggling as much as they are. Not more than so. The opportunity is there. You're right and if you get arizona and you look fairly decent doing it. It'd take momentum into cala maybe you get that and then you know you got orients. Maybe forget about that one but still i. If you get a winter to. They just got to win on saturday. Try to get some confidence back and get the locker room back. I think and he can get a couple of the road and maybe you can finish the season with four wins which i think you know at the beginning of the season. I was with you. Brian at the beginning of the season. You're looking at ten seven loss to going. Wow this buffs team might be legit here. We go but now. it's funny. How expectations changed throughout the throughout the preseason throughout the regular season and yeah those expectations weren't i don't know if they were even any expectations to start the season for the buffs. But then you battle with texas and turn it around to okay. yeah absolutely. They're going to a ball game and then we saw what happened the next four weeks and now it's hey can you get. Can you get four wins at least to salvage it and it is crazy. That's why we love football. It's maddening man at it makes me wanna pull my hair out. Yeah no question. Actually you know it's even worse than that right now. Can you get that second win. You know because if you don't that's one you know if you're see you if you don't get this it's arizona. It's hard to see them getting win. You know the rest of the season. Because i think those guys on this team i hate to say guys quit but i think you start losing the locker room situation. So it's it's kinda do or die for the bus or this week i think. Yeah i think you're right. One hundred percent bryan. We didn't get a chance to talk to you last week so i wanted to kind of follow up on the on. The whole durell camera situation didn't get into. It was such a surprise because brian. "All right preseason. I what it is what it is. I don't really get that excited about the preseason but that means that we're a couple of weeks away from the regular season so that's that's good. That was the good that i took out of this the bad now. We don't have a clip for this. Because he can't really hear it. But it's the carl durell running into the cameraman at the end of the game and just pop it him. Who quickly stiff army delivers there and to me. The bad part of that the ipad part of it was george. Makes the apology like on twitter and then puts out an official release. And then carl comes out. It makes his apology on sunday morning. He issued the following statement in an apology for the incident with a local photographer at the end of see us thirty seven to fourteen loss to southern california. He said. I want to apologize for the incident. At the end of our game. Saturday we do value the media coverage they provide for a program which i which i actually do believe and this was strictly in the heat of the moment. That's not who i am. And i hope people who've known me through the years do realize that i did reach out and spoke directly this morning to viagra for from. Cbs four. the personally apologized to him. I don't know if viagra fers happy about it. Until or whatever. But i've i've dealt with carl five or six times on the phone once in person and everything you hear about him. He's a really good guy. "Here is is a texas. Am i i've got. I've got must be a dozen friends that are. am fans. And i was telling you guys like cockroaches everywhere. It's crazy so i guarantee you. There's going to be playing in maroon and that stadium on saturday. It should be a raucous experience. They've got a freshman quarterback bumps and got a freshman quarterback. They've got a lot of talent around him. And i think there's a lot of reasons to really be excited about this game on. Yeah i mean you could say this is a measuring stick type game. But i mean you tell me mark what. What's what's the senate. They're from the buffs. Carl durell side of the camp. I mean they're looking at this thing saying hey we're going to go in and we're gonna we're gonna shock really good football team. I don't think it looks like you have to think that way and so i don't think there's any doubt that's the message they've been reaching you. Don't back down for anybody. You don't question yourself against anybody anybody in the country and so they just know. They've got to play banner right. Clean up the small stuff Let grin lewis. Make some of those throws because there were there. Were open receivers last week. He wasn't willing to throw the ball to okay. So so take care of that They did a lot of experimental line. We'll see but i mean that's right. Unc to me is. It's so hard to judge how good they are. Because there's so many transfers and guys that games from the power five level which is what the you is at so you know. How good are they really so But you're right see you as a i mean. They've got a lot of talent and then they've got some good players. I mean they're stacked at running back. The stacks are receiver It might be the best line when healthy if they've had no while defenses looking pretty solid. So you know. I think there'll be a pretty good team but again it comes out to. Nobody knows anything about usa and that includes the you right includes us to. I mean i'm just trying to figure out what you know. We know some of the names. But what do you know. We have been played in four hundred and fifty nine thousand days. It seems like i mean it's it's it's not so there's only so much we can take this time last year. You know they. We were learning that the season was moving spring. Ball's coming up and they were going to do that. And then of course since then the bears have moved on from their offensive coordinator and grabbed. Max mccaffrey own elevated his position dylan transferred. And so you've had a lot of changes maybe for the better but you're right brian. At the end of the day even deep insiders don't have a whole lot of information on this team. No there's really no information i mean coaster l. you colorado was asked couple times the go back and watch valor from twenty nineteen. So yeah we do but like you know. How do you do a game plan off of our christian and you know that. That's tough to do because really the college defense is an offense or more sophisticated. But you know. There's a lot of high school coaches on unc's roster or coaches of their only experiences high school. So you know what's going to look like and we have no idea so i can see where there's a lot of skepticism by unc. Emmy kathy's got a big name but not a lot of experience and His staff is a lot of high school coaches. His offense coordinator is never gonna coach period and is now going to place so i could hear. There's a lot of skepticism. Yeah i i. I mean i can see it too. I've said it a million times. You know there's one part of me that thinks okay. It's the first game of the season. The bears are an unknown. So maybe that bodes well for them so they kind of have this gritty hang in there first half where it's not completely out of out of the question and then maybe the buffs turn it up a little bit late in the third or the fourth. They win by twenty or something like that. Th there's also the side of me that thinks it could get ugly. It could live up to what that spreads looking like jerry. Broussard could just have himself a day and break some records tomorrow night. So i'm having a tough time with it man. Yeah me too. And it was one of those games that you know. If you're a buff fan it makes you nervous because you really want to go into this game not get hurt and be able to play your backups. Most that's have to not show anything to texas. We have next week but it doesn't always work that way. I mean twenty seventeen. You see came up to boulder and You know it was a game end of the second half and see you one by twenty. But they didn't get to play. Their backups didn't work out like they wanted to so It's gotta make you nervous because this. Well let's start first. Where where i got a chance to meet you at the unc media day last week. And the mccaffrey family. I mean obviously has captured the show there. Yeah no doubt. I mean it was fun to be up there and the excitement level around northern colorado. Football is you know maybe at an all time high and when you get when he gets three of the six mccaffrey's you know when you throw Lisa and luke and of course christian and there with the three. That are up there Ed in dylan and mac That's a that's a powerhouse family in colorado football from the high school level Unfortunately we haven't seen them stay in state much or at all for college football but if anyone can do it them right you look at obviously went into super bowl with the broncos and you know arguably a top five receiver in that organization's history dealing with all kinds of hype. Coming out of high school. I still remember covering state championship games. He played in it valor christian and how good he was. And unfortunately you know. Things didn't work out at michigan. But i think that's probably more on on jim harbaugh than anything else i mean. Hearts had no success at michigan michigan. Fans really wanted dylan to be the guy and for whatever reason he never got the chance. And then of course max you know who had A few stints in the nfl could've probably still played in the nfl But the to come work for his father and bdo oc up. There was was too much for him to pass up. So you know do i expect. Unc football to go out and win ten games this year. Probably not but do. I think that the mccaffrey's have as good a chance. Any wants to get that program back on track absolutely so yeah it was an exciting exciting day up there and like i said there's there's more hype around that program than there has been in a long time and come september third. They're going to get a chance to do it. Impulse them field and man if they give the buffs game then. That's really going to get people's attention. Oh it absolutely is in all this family Family being together is great in theory. And i think everybody's hoping for a successful year but you know the question begs to be asked you know what what if what if what if dylan comes out. And he does struggle. What if there is issues on the offensive side of the ball That that maybe max's is starting to cause. I mean that makes an interesting dynamic and where ed do do you. Think ed's got the ability to step in and if it gets that bad pull his son from being the starting quarterback from possibly firing his his son is the offensive coordinator. That could be a very tough situation and that talked about that. You know you discuss putting the the father hat on versus the coaching had an and as a competitive guy mean you don't have the success. He's had In his life and his career both playing and coaching them less. I think he gets that. So yeah you know i agree. It would be awkward. It would be difficult. But i think it didn't take this job just to you know. Hang out with his son he. He's got plenty of money to do that on a beach somewhere. If you really wanted to have family side so i took the job because he wants to win. And i think the first go around is going to be i. Let's see what we can do. Max and dylan and make this work. No but it yesterday or two days ago. I can't remember now. Carl durell say it's a serious injury and he's gonna need surgery. Yeah so all of a sudden you which had a transfer from an sec program looking to be their starting quarterback Won't have shrout in that game so he is not you know we're talking spreads in vegas and this and that they're picked to win like four games this year. So it's not like they're going in and playing organ in week one or they're they're going to you know. Do a trip to the sec. In week one sees a a good football program but he's not expected to do much in the pac twelve at all this year. So that's where i think. Okay if that game is closer league to there'd be some tension and folsom could unc. Think man maybe we could pull this off again. I'm not predicting them to win. But it's not like the you is the team on a lot of people's radars To have a ton of success either this year. So that's why that's why. I think it'll be Uninteresting matchup let's. Let's leave it at that. I think that's well said. And i think that's a good point bringing up see you. Carl had success in his first year but it was a weird year. And we all know that and and and we'll see what happens there but that kinda just speaks to the state of college football in colorado right now. I mean you gotta dazs ios. Getting his first real crackup at sea issue now after a very strange year last year. You got mccaffrey. Durell and. I don't think anybody's expecting a whole lot. But have you ever seen three. What could be mediocre teams. Have this much hype around him. Well i think you hit on it a little bit. There were so desperate for normal college football season right twenty twenty wash. Unc didn't get a play cs. You i mean every week is yes you are. They not because they're still of it. I think they played something like four games and even see and last year while they had some success. That just you know when poulsen's not full there. There's not the hype and all this and that so. I think it's more of yeah. It's put it this way. come october. I if the broncos can get out of the gate a little bit with his schedule and the the colorado teams are you know one into one and three and four whatever then. All the attention is going to shift off to college landscape landscape but because we haven't really truly think college football in this state and almost two years. I think that's your explanation for why people are so excited about all three programs do. That's that's absolutely right. And that's just sports in general right now. "Dtra's never had a passer rating above sixty one with pressure. So hopefully the game slows down for him. The real positive here is that you would think he isn't as pressured as much this season. Ut ucla's offensive line. They're gonna return all five guys including two tackles that we think compliance on days. It was an online last year that when it had quarterback behind it. That got the ball out on time. Quarterbacks did pretty well. Right i mean. Dt are still runs himself into some tax but basically when the ball came out on time. Ucla's offensive line allowed a pressure rate below twenty three percent. They also did well opening up lanes in the ground game. Top forty in line yards. Ucla to me out wide has some nice weapons as well. Kyle phillips might be the best slot receiver in the pac twelve. You have greg dosage. I mean he is a nightmare at tight end. I don't know who can cover them. Only kyle pits was a better downfield tight end last season than dosage. Only three other power five tight ends with. At least twenty five receptions had more yards per outrun than dosage. The other tight end mike. Martinez is an absolute animal. But i think. Ucla when i look at their roster when i do some reading and poke around for some information they're still looking for the reliable outside threat and let's see if they can find it. I'm not sure like chase. Coda and matt sykes or the solution. But we'll see cam. Brown does transfer information. 'em what i do like though is chip. Kelly telling us what he thinks of his team. I two years at ucla chipper in a slow offense relatively speaking. You can't run a million plays when you're out manned and don't have the horses last season that tempo increased and with basically everyone but felt back on offense. I think we see an even faster pace the season and to me a coach will tell you what he thinks of his team and i think that's a pretty big indictment of of what chip kelly thinks of his offense at least and i think he's got reason to be excited. Not only about his offense and what he brings back this year but a defensive team all that really improved last season. They jumped Their overall by one point two seven yards per play on defense tied with toledo for the biggest jump year over year. Ten eleven starters return but you do lose all pac twelve performer and osa. And i'm not even gonna try and pronounce this game. So i apologize the ucla football fan. You know what. I'm talking about when when you look at. Ucla defensively their biggest issue was trying to slow down teams. That could actually throw the forward pass where they ranked one hundred fourteenth when you begin to assess ucla's defense. Are you optimistic. There trending in the right direction and you could see mark improvement from that group along with an offense that we have i- expectations for this season like what. Ucla chose to do defense with last season i it was just so chip kelly in the sense that him being an analytics guy. He's new defense. Couldn't hold up down to down so he wanted to be really aggressive and chip knows he doesn't have the top defensive talent to win down to down so ucla was like. Hey we're just gonna be feast or famine. Defense played super aggressive fifty-one percent bullets rate seven ties in the country but the four to five allowed. Ucla to prevent big plays also so basically ucla wanted to create chaos. Around the line of scrimmage and and and get home while playing their secondary back and if they didn't get home they weren't going to give up the big play they're like hey you can feast on the short intermediate stuff be efficient down down. Try to take it on us. You know twelve thirteen fourteen place and so it's always good to see coaches. Choose to do things that make sense when you look at them metrically as a team as a good sign of a good coach and ensure enough chip had that right approach because ucla finishes ninety eighth in success. Rate allowed ninety ninth in line yards ninety eight than stuff right. One hundred nineteenth and rushing success rate. A lot he knew his team was going to get bullied either. Way why not create some pressure interns and people over now. The blitzes didn't get home as much as ucla would like. And that's why they're barely above average in havoc only forced eleven turnovers. But i think another year in the system. Ten guys returning. There's hope i think for a little bit more consistency with veteran group and a full off season when you're trying to project improvement it typically doesn't mean projecting a team to go from horrific to elite. Ucla was outside the top eighty defense efficiency. But i think todd a good result for this defense is a unit. That's fighting to be you know in that top fifty to sneak in there. I mean hey look. "Banking made simple tyson summers defensive coordinator for the colorado buffaloes as as colorado's defensive coordinator for two years with the buffs he came to colorado with coach tucker in two thousand and nineteen. Carl durell kept him which you can see why you don't make a lot of changes at that point plus tyson's favour ready obviously had the year with colorado state too. But it's interesting. It's kind of a surprise here. Colorado's defense was pretty good. They they were good. In a lot of areas they were thirteenth nationally. In third down conversions allowed and third and fourth down conversions allowed so they buckled up once a drive got serious in the third and fourth down the lead the pack twelve and both of those categories. They tied for second of the pack. Twelve with fifteen sacks and led the league and tackles for loss with forty nine. They were seventh nationally in tackles for loss per game.
