Bob Woodward & Carl Bernstein: Trump Worse Than Nixon

"The two of a warm personal relationship of fundamentally disagree on what needs to be done to reform America's election laws So this is about reforming America's election laws not protecting the capitol building Liz is much more conservative as far as what kinds of changes she wants to have done one source told him wow really So they decided the ladies and gentlemen make a much too long story short not to air their differences in public and to wait until after their united front for the cameras Then they'll go back and work out their differences And of course yesterday Sunday they turned to the likes of Woodward and Bernstein To tell us what's really going on What's taking place and of course they tell us that Trump is actually worse than Nixon But Nicholson defined corruption but Trump is even worse Oh yes Use the only president who has been seditious the only one in American history has been seditious

"I would get from the S&P, I would be taking down the stock stock results of the S&P, and so we learned that that everything, including business news, we learned about the world and it was, you know, it was like watching the world go by from this amazing seat. One of the things I did, I'd been into paper about four weeks and the head copy boy said, hey, Bernstein, go out to burning tree country club, president and Eisenhower is there. He's playing golf. He's go out there. We've got a photographer. We want you to pick up the film from the photographer who's photographing I playing golf. I had an employee's card that became a kind of press card that I would wear around my neck from the Washington star. I went out to burning tree and the cabbie once he saw this sort of press card I was wearing. Took me straight to the green, the putting green where the president of the United States about ten feet for me was sinking cuts and off to prison knives and hours right was the photographer. And he motioned to me the photographer opened up his camera, gave me the film inside. And before I went back to the office with it, I took out my notebook and I study it Eisenhower about ten 12 feet for me. It was the first time I had ever seen a president of the United States. And I saw that he had brown spots on his hands. He was the oldest president. And it was about to be succeeded by the youngest ever elected Jack Kennedy. So these are the experiences that I describe in the book. When you talk about what you learned from being in the newsroom in person with these people, getting out with people, it makes me realize that the youngsters today who are coming up are missing out on so much by all of this work from home, they don't have these mentors there to be able to learn from them in whatever business places they're going. I think that's true. That we have got to kind of institutional quickness that we're looking for easy ways in this culture and it's one of the reasons I think that the United States is having many of the difficulties that it's having, including its place in the world. The idea that we have to do things that we no longer go through the necessary steps to do things right. Look at our educational system with failures of our educational system in this country. Institutional failures, regulatory failures. Why do we find these things? Because one, the great meritocracy that existed in this country after World War II, no longer exists in this country, but we have instead our institutions, yes, they're looking for profit. Yes, they're trying to do some things. But they're not succeeding very often because of all these shortcuts and particularly in news. We need to go back to the basis, basics. As we see in all the president's men, as we see in this book about the joy of a kid learning the craft, go back to those basics. That's the pod for today. Thanks for sticking with us this week. "The personal agony it would have evolved. After two years of scandal, the release of secret White House recordings exposing his complicity and the growing threat of impeachment. I have never been a quitter. To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. But as president, I must put the interests of America first. He was, and remains, the first president to step down while in office. I shall resign the presidency effective at noon tomorrow. We are now outside on the south lawn of The White House, where in a few moments the president and his family will come out and board a helicopter. And the final wave, the way we've seen hundreds of times on the.

"Michael Knowles here. This is the Michael Knowles show. And it is a day that ends in Y, which means that President Trump has done something to irritate the media, which means that whatever he did Is worse than Watergate. We can check in with Watergate expert Longtime journalist Carl Bernstein. It's not deja vu. This is something far worse than occurred in Watergate. We have both a criminal president of the United States in Donald Trump and a subversive president of the United States. This is the ultimate smoking gun tape. It is the tape with the evidence of what this president is willing to do. Uh, to undermine the electoral system and illegally improperly and immorally try to instigate a coup in any other presidents. Any other presidency? This tape would be evidence. Enough to result in the impeachment of the president of United States and really an immediate call by the members of Congress, including of his own party that he resigned immediately. And we need that call because this, of course, is worse than Watergate. Just like in September when Bob would were when Carl Bernstein rather said that President Trump downplaying Cove itwas Worse than Watergate, or 2019 when he said that President Trump's phone call with Ukraine was worse than Watergate or in 2017. When Bernstein said the Russia probe felt worse. In Watergate. Most things I think are worse than Watergate. How is that now? CNN. Would save a lot of money on contributor fees, if instead of paying Carl Bernstein whatever they've been paying him for 50 years, they or however long CNN's been around these 40 years. They just had a wind up doll, and it looks like Carl Bernstein and then they pull the tab and then when, when they let go, it said worse than Watergate, because that is the on Lee. Reason that he is employed by these networks. I'm not. I'm not merely making fun of Carl Bernstein. That is actually the media strategy. The only reason that guy has a job is so that every six months or year they can trot him out on TV. And his job at the role that has been scripted for him is for him to say that whatever non troversy of the day is that there is worse than Watergate in this case. Is President. Trump had a phone call with sexually of state of Georgia and said, Hey, I want there to be balance security. I look, there's tens of thousands of ballots that look very fraudulent to me, and we're only down by whatever it is 23,000. So you look into those ballots. Otherwise this election could could be won through fraud. On the part of Joe Biden, and then they leaked the phone call, and then they take one little two second clip out of it. And then Bernstein goes on and said, worse than Watergate. The reason I got a little flubbed up in the introduction, I said Woodward accidentally instead of Bernstein is those were the two journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein and Bernstein, who's the one they tried out more often is sort of like the Ben Affleck to Bob Woodward's Matt Damon. You know, Bob Woodward is the one who has At least some talent, and Carl Bernstein just kind of kind of went along for the ride beyond all of the nonsensical allegations of worse than Watergate that we hear from Bernstein every six months. Think about some of the scandals on the left. Watergate has been blown up into this massive, massive the worst possible scandal ever. It wasn't actually in the grand scope of presidential scandals. It wasn't all that big a deal compared to say. Allegations that John Kennedy stuffed the ballot boxes through the Daily machine in Illinois in 19 sixties. Still, that election, perhaps from Richard Nixon, LBJ, famously stealing his Senate seat 1948 in Texas. That one went all the way up to the Supreme Court in the court simply wouldn't hear the case. They didn't even rule on it. And that is what landed him, then the vice presidency and then after Kennedy's assassination in the presidency About Barack Obama spying on the Trump campaign in 2016 that seems worse than Watergate. How about Hillary Clinton's campaign colluding with a foreign adversary? Ironically colluding with Russia to put together the bogus Steele dossier to try to subvert the trump campaign? What about that? That's certainly worse than Watergate. Give me a break. I don't want to hear it anymore, you know? I don't want to hear any more on from the left. You'll hear about her. Nixon was the most corrupt President Nixon was nothing compared to Barack Obama. Nixon was using Nixon was dishonest. That guy's nothing compared to Joe Biden, who at least would appear to be about to ascend to the presidency. Nothing compared to Hillary Clinton. Give me a break. They do this also with McCarthy, you always hear about McCarthyism and this awful McCarthyism during the during the early 20th century, when this awful senator pretended that there were communists working in the federal government, there were communists working in the federal government. We there was a communist who helped found the United Nations. His name was Alger Hiss. And he was a very high level employee at the State Department was at the DOJ. Before that he was a convicted communist Was. I suppose it was after the statute of limitations that run it this old book about this gold witness, but Whittaker Chambers, it's the book that turned Reagan from a liberal into a conservative For all of McCarthy's flaws for all of Nixon's floors, they were men with flaws like everybody else. To posit them is that kind of supreme evil of political scandal? It's completely ridiculous, and it's a way to distract from the legitimate democratic scandals. You know, we've been hearing a lot over the past few days about how Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley and about a dozen senators, along with 100 to 150, Republican members of Congress. Are going to object to the certification. The electoral college results And what this means is you had the vote on election Day, then who know there was a long process and some of these states where they just kept finding votes under a rock underneath the dresser under lift up the couch cushions, they find some more votes. And then there was some questions about how these votes were counted. Transparency. Poll watchers in Pennsylvania the violation of the state constitution pretty pretty blatant. And so then it goes to the Electoral college, the Electoral college voted and then finally, the electoral college votes are read before the house and the Senate and you can object to this. This has happened Many times. Democrats have done it much more often than Republicans have even very recently. And so now that Republicans want to do it the leftist during a big hissy fit. Some Republicans are raising objections to and I want to take those objections seriously, because I think they merit consideration. Even though they're not very good, Liz changing. And Tom Cotton. Are coming out and saying they oppose the objection to these certification because it sets a dangerous precedent. The argument is, If Republicans are going to object to the certification of the electoral college votes, then Democrats might do that to us in the future. And I would be willing to entertain this argument. If it were not the case that the Democrats Already do.

"We hear them in elections. Why? When we hear them? Why wouldn't we hear them today? Right. What would be somehow wanted to be amazing if there were no problems and no issues in today's election. Um, my guess is we're going to hear about Problems and issues. This is this is my guess. We're going to hear about problems and we're gonna hear about people who weren't able to get t the polls on time or there was a problem when they got to the polls, and they weren't able to vote where they were left in line or or somehow the scanning machine didn't work. We're gonna hear all of those things. That's going to happen. What's the results going to be? I don't know. But the question before us is whether or not The Brad Rapids Berger story. Is going to create. Change in that election. Right? Bad Rapids burger stories that President Trump calls Brad Rapids Burger, the secretary of state of Georgia, and says I need 11,807 180 votes. One more vote. Then he lost by according to the results. He's not actually asking him. To find votes for him. That's that's that's not it. There's a great write up over red State by a guy named shipwrecked, shipwrecked crew. The president's call with the Georgia secretary of state a case study in the media duplicity that President Trump has battled from day one. And this we did discuss We have impeachment based on a phone call with Ukraine. And there was absolutely nothing wrong. Nothing wrong with that phone call. When people said there was something with there was something wrong with that phone call. Um It seemed very obvious that they were desperate. And sure enough, Adam Schiff in the crew were completely desperate to somehow get President Trump by any and all means necessary. Desperate as can be. That seems to be the case here. Now again. It's not a phone call that I would have made. Really and truly not. Because it could be spun this way, and I don't need the bother. President Trump doesn't worry about those things. And certainly the things that seem odd to other people sometimes seem very, very normal to me, because it may be because I grew up around some of those kinds of people in terms of the way they talk in the affectation of the voice and and everything else. But the best is you have people who have no life experience. You can't believe that people have life experiences are having a conversation about life experience things. The president wasn't asking someone to create votes. So why would Carl Bernstein of Woodward and Bernstein right Watergate? Why would he call that say that that phone call was far worse than Watergate? Well, that's very simple. Carl Bernstein is so desperate for attention that he will do anything. Carl Burn scenes entire career saying Look at me. Look at me. Look at me. Remember Watergate. Look at me. Look at me. Don't look at what word? You look at me. That's Carl Bernstein. Congratulations on water, Kate. I won't say no. Everything else you've done. Your career doesn't exist. No one knows what it is. By the way, he said of the Russia probe feels worse than Watergate. The tape of Trump admitting to downplaying covert 19 is worse than Watergate. If Trump colluded with Russia, it's worse than Watergate. This is what he does. And when I see that I come to realize that there ain't nothing there. Hi pit, no minds. It is doesn't have. Will it have an effect in Georgia? Mom? Maybe. But it seems that this phone call that was Rapids. Berger knew it was happening. I don't even believe him. The release of this phone called hasn't affected trumpets affecting Rapids Burger because he's the guy who looks like a damn fool. He looks the fool for releasing this call. And I put forth to you and I'll were in the election. We're in it right now. We'll get results soon enough. I'm saying. It's going to have no effect on how people voted. None that leads us to part two. I was on Newsmax the other day. I'm actually be on Newsmax today a little bit later today, So be sure to listen for that. I was asked if there's infighting in the Republican Party, and I said there's according to who you talk to. This always invited. You can't get five conservatives to figure out a way to agree on going for lunch. Inviting that standard. But I didn't get into the conversation of all this. Leftists in fighting all day all night all the time. The progressives are fighting with the Democrats constantly for the power position in the party, which, by the way is the progressives. Right? So was so there's there's constantly fighting. But how bad is it and doesn't matter.

"Know you and Carl Bernstein written about the end of Watergate and Nixon unraveling questions about his stability. How does that moment compared to know? You know, I don't I don't know. I mean, I think President Trump was willing to talk. Extensively. He called me spontaneously. I think seven times over the last 10 months. I called him. I think seven times and either answered right away or called me. You hang up from at least one of those calls. I know because you write about it. April 5th one, You said I hung up distressed. Beyond being a reporter feeling worried for the country? Yes, because I had done a lot of reporting on what needed to be done with the virus. And in that call, I wanted to give him a chance. And I I I said, look, you're going to be judged. Bye. The virus. This's at that point, 160,000 people were dead. I was pushing him. Two. Deal with it. Quite frankly, and this is a reporter's question from reporting and talking to other officials and At the end of the book. As you may recall, I say in totality Trump is the wrong man for the job. Is that a first for you? Issuing a ruling on the fitness of a president for the job? Well, for the first Trump book fear, I said, very explicitly that there is a nervous breakdown of the executive branch. You know, get personal in this window. Well, you know, Trump Judge. It's a contusion and a judgment based on overwhelming evidence. Can you briefly describe Why? Why did you feel the need to come down with that judgment on this president now? Because I had extensive information that he failed to keep the country safe when he knew. And had information. That could keep the country much safer because he failed to tell the truth. And if there's a tragedy and all of this, and I think there is It's that Trump, who said I wanted to play it down because I didn't want to create a panic. And my study of nine presidents 20% of the president's we've had and of the history before that is when the country's told the truth, they don't panic. Last thing We're in this moment where? Whatever your politics Americans, they're scared. Everything feels so unsettled the future of our democracy. The future of our country feels at stake. And so I guess I'm curious. You, Bob Woodward. How worried are you? Having lived through and having driven a million news cycles does this felt different? You know, there's a lot of worry about what Trump will do. The deal put troops in the street and he did and very limited way. Ah and there and I asked him this question. Suppose you lose what are you going to do in the election? And he said, I don't want to comment on that. But We still we can sit. And have this conversation and I can make the kind of judgments of our leader. That Ah, journalists in many countries in the world cannot make So I say in the book that for the moment democracy is held But leadership has failed. Bob Woodward. Thank you. Thank you. His new book is titled.

"To your phones, home page and stay connected to Seattle's most important news and conversation tonight. New reporting from The Washington Post. Bob Woodward says that President Trump was bluntly warned in January about the threat of Corona virus, but chose to downplay the danger in public. Woodward's new book, Rage is his latest work in a 50 year career investigating American presidents. His first investigation reported with Carl Bernstein led to the resignation of Richard Nixon. For rage. Mr. Trump agreed to 18 recorded interviews. Many which you're about to hear started with the words of the White House operator. Mr Woodward, the president. Mr Trump, called sometimes late at night to talk about black lives matter, the threat of nuclear war and about the dire warning he received during an intelligence briefing this past January. On January 28th of this year before the virus was on anyone's radar. The National Security advisor Robert O'Brien told the president and this virus will be the biggest national security threat you face. In your presidency. What was the president's reaction? Is his head popped up in. He has questions. President Trump's questions in the January 28th meeting exposed a difference of opinion. Beth Sander, from the office of the director of National Intelligence, said the virus might be no worse than SARS in 2003 when there were only eight known infections in the U. S. But Woodward, says Deputy national security advisor Matt Pottenger, who had been a reporter in China, Told Mr Trump his unofficial Chinese contacts had raised a grave warning. Hunter said his contacts in China told him this is going to be Like the 1918. Spanish flu pandemic killed 675,000 people in this country. It was a stunning moment. In the Trump presidency. And I think in American history because he then went on to publicly dismiss the virus, and he knew that this was a pandemic. Coming. And this is January. 28th. Yes? The next day, the White House announced a Corona virus task force. This was Mr Trump January 30th two days after the warning. We think we have a very well into control way have Very little problem in this country at this moment, five And those people are all recuperating successfully. But we're working very closely with China and other countries on we think it's goingto have Avery good ending for so that I can assure you Chinese officials were concealing what they knew about coded 19. Foreign nationals on January 31st, the president, restricted travel from China. The next week in a phone call, Mr Trump told Woodward what he'd been learning about the virus. This was February 7th. It goes through air Bob. That's always tougher than touch another touch. You don't have to touch things right? But the air Just breathe the air. That's how it's uh past And so that's a very tricky one. That's a very delicate one. It's also more deadly than your You know you're even your strenuous flues. This is deadly stuff. Three weeks after that call, the president said this to the public, So it's a little like the regular flu that we have flu shots for. And will essentially have a flu shot for this in a fairly quick manner. Yeah, go ahead in that February 7th interview. It's clear that the president knows what the stakes are. But he's not sharing that with the public at that time. Yes, this's the tragedy. President of the United States has a duty to warn the public will understand them. But if they get the feeling that they're not getting the truth, then you're going down the path. Of deceit and cover. Did the president ever disclosed to you? Why he wasn't telling the public what the stakes were with the Corona virus. So in March, I asked exactly that question. You know what's going on? And the president said, Well, I think really be honest with you here. I want you I wanted to I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down. Yes, because I don't want to create a panic. I think he did not understand. The American public. He said. Well, I don't want to create a panic. We know from history when the public has told the truth they organize. We have a problem. We're going to step up. And Trump thought, Oh, well, they'll panic when there's A crisis when President particularly know something. It's time to tell the public In some form. He failed. You write in the book that the president's handling of the virus reflects his instincts, habits and style. What are those denial? Making up his own fax at age 77. Bob Woodward has fact checked nine presidents Rage is his 20th book. It's published by Simon and Schuster, part of Viacom, CBS. The title rage comes from him, he said. He brings outrage in people. And he doesn't know whether that's a positive or a negative, good thing or a bad thing. And also it describes condition in the country Now there was a lot of rage out there. His interviews for Rage started in the Oval Office, then continued for months and phone calls many out of the blue from Mr Trump. Yes, I mean, you have audio tape of thiss were Hey, Come on, Mr Woodward, the President, President, Bob President, How are you? President Trump doesn't dispute downplaying COVID in order to reduce 'panic'

"There are a few games for every president. One of those games is that at some point, Bob Woodward will write a book about you. While you're in office, the Democratic National Committee is trying to solve this prime minister. Began before dawn Saturday when five intruders were captured by police inside the offices of the committee in Washington. By Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein broke the Watergate story since then Woodward has done his thing where he talks to literally everybody can at the White House and writes up the narrative that emerges to do that he often talks to sources on deep background that means names aren't used not even their direct quotes. The reason I bring this up is don't talk to him. Someone else will and the best way to get your version of the story out there is to give him a call. I. That is how he managed to get interviews over the. Last several months we begin tonight with those bombshell recordings. We yesterday we finally learned what is in Bob Woodward's latest book about President Trump. There were lots of revelations in the Washington Post report, but the biggest was the claim that the president intentionally misled Americans about how bad the novel Corona virus was at a critical moment and this admission do not come from a bunch of unnamed sources it came from President trump himself. Let's ABC's chief White House correspondent Jonathan, Karl John We've now learned the president did a ton of on record interviews with Bob Woodward. What did he tell him? Well, he did eighteen interviews with Woodward Woodward tape them, and now we we hear the audio here the President's voice in this headline on the virus, which is you see the president's progression slee we only have five people hopefully everything's GonNa be great. They have somewhat of a problem, but hopefully, it's all going to be great but we're working. With China just so you know and other countries very very closely. So it doesn't get out of hand February seventh interview. So this is really we're starting to grasp the the severity of the pandemic overseas, not necessarily here in the United States yet the president tells Woodward quite candidly that this is really bad. It goes through Air Bob that's always tougher than the touch. You don't have to touch things right. But the air, you just breathe the air that's how it's passed. This is more deadly than the flu more deadly than even the most strenuous flus. So. The president is acknowledging on February seventh to Bob Woodward that this is a really dangerous threat. And in and by the way. The virus fast forward that working hard looks like by April and theory when it gets a little warmer. Miraculously goes away. That's true. We know what the president was saying publicly was largely downplaying the threat. This is a flu. This is like a flu within a couple of days is going to be down close to zero. Now it's turning out not just all people. Today and yesterday. Some startling facts came out. It's not just old all. Were asked him about that in a in a subsequent interview in the middle of March, and the president quite candidly says that he likes to. Downplay the threat basically because he doesn't want to get people to work up, I, wanted to. Play it down I like laying it down. Because I don't want to create panic. And you were sitting in the White House briefing room waiting for the press secretary as this was all dropping yesterday, right like Woodward's audio recordings playing on CNN's. What was the response from the White House? Well, this is an extraordinary story of Woodward and scientist Woodward's reportings. We often get in his books. There's actual tapes of the President's Voice essentially acknowledging that he had been misleading the American public I mean. This is this is there other details of the book that were also you know embarrassing so clearly, a little bit of damage control in real time is going on in the white? House the. Breathing was pushed back by fifteen minutes than another fifteen minutes than another fifteen minutes and eventually Kelly Mac, in any of the press secretary comes out. So this president does what leaders do good leaders it stay calm and resolute at a time when you faced an insurmountable challenge, that's what this president is not that the president lied to the American College about the threat posed by the president has never lied to the American public on Cova actually say. That the president. Did Not downplay the coronavirus threat never downplayed the virus. Once again, the president expressed calm. The president was serious about this when Democrats were pursuing their sham and. Hear the president's. Own Voice telling Bob Woodward. Always play it down I still like playing down likes to play it down because he doesn't want to create a panic and then after macanese briefing, the president came out made an announcement on related about his potential judicial nominees. And he was asked about this and said you know so did you mislead the public well I think if you said in order to reduce panic perhaps that sell fact is a cheerleader for this country I love our country and I don't want people to be frightened I don't want to create panic as you say, and certainly I'm not going to drive. This country or the world into a frenzy, and he acknowledges right there right there what he said on the tape to Woodward yes. He he does downplaying worried about creating panic. Well. So what is the justification of that though John Jonkers? I didn't WANNA start a panic but on the other hand, if somebody hears, you say this is no worse than a flu and they act like that and then they get the coronavirus and have horrible health from vacations I mean, what do you say to that the White House? It's a tough one because this is a president the. Leadership and not creating a panic isn't about like lying to

Trump wants Fox News journalist fired over reports on his alleged U.S. troops insults

"Was also the host of CNN's Reliable sources. Program joins us to talk about what you uncovered about the evolution and impact of the Trump Fox partnership. But first we're going to get his take on some of today's political news and welcome Brian Stelter. Good to have you with us. Hey, great. Grateful to be here. Thank you so much. I'd like to begin by talking about the article by Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor in chief of Atlantic whom you had on your program on CNN's reliable sources, just on Sunday. And just for some background for listeners who may not know about this. Trump is alleged to have called those who died in World War one losers and suckers. They were buried in a cemetery outside of Paris and supposedly Again. Allegedly. He didn't want to honor the dead for fear his hair would be messed up. Jennifer Griffin of Fox News has backed up the story and confirmed it in the White House is denied it. They've given the title of your book called it a Hoax. And Trump said it never happened, but I want to get to here is Trump wants girlfriend fired, he said. Fox News is gone. This is maybe change the relationship with Fox. First of all your thoughts about that, but also About what Goldberg told you, Which is this is just the tip of the iceberg. I do expect more reporting in the coming days, including quite possibly from Bob Woodward's book. I Hate to start out talking about some other author. But I'll tell you what. There's a lot of anticipation for Woodward's book Rage, which comes out next Tuesday. And I think one of the reasons why Jeffrey Goldberg published his story when he did. Was perhaps because he thinks what word has some similar reporting. So look, we will see we will find out when that book begins to leak, But I think that the Atlantic and other outlets Have Provided Mohr evidence of a pattern of the president, disparaging veterans and disrespecting the military. Some of this is in the president's own words, including yesterday. When he comments on people at the top of the military just wanting to start wars. Making basically calling them or profiteers. No, I think what the president has done by attacking Fox on this story. By saying reported over Griffin should be fired because she was able to corroborate part of Jeffrey Goldberg report. Is that he's working the refs. He doesn't want news on Fox News. He only wants propaganda. So one minute he will attack a reporter at Fox or complain about Anchorage, Fox, and the next minute he will promote Pete Hegseth, Jeannine Pirro. I'll call into Sean Hannity show her fox and friends. It shows that he doesn't want journalism on the air. He wants pro trump opinion in orderto keep his base is solid as a rock. Well, he's going against Ah, much respected reporter here who has had a great deal of praise for her integrity on the fact that matter is Fox kind of threw her under the bus, didn't they? I think Fox did not sufficiently. Promote and tout its own reporting. So once Griffin had corroboration for some of Goldberg's account, she did go on the air once and talk about it. A couple other shows, acknowledged it. But the dominant theme of the coverage was still trumps denials. And I would understand that they'd emphasize the denials. The president was known to be a proud on his truth Teller, someone who never told a lie. But this president has proven that his words are meaningless. By his own actions. He's country to himself all the time and lied to the public constantly about the pandemic and other matters. Soto lead with the president's denial seems faulty to me. Especially when your own reporter from your own outlet. Has backed up some of the reporting. But again, this just shows the tug of war between Fox and inside Fox between news and opinions, and I think it shows that opinions almost always winning. Well, let's talk, though, about what has come out of this controversy, which is the whole validity of unnamed sources. There have been certainly a lot of accusations that many do not corroborate the story. In fact, John Bolton's name has been mentioned on frequent occasions as well as other Trump supporters who claim that he never said what has been alleged here. On yet you have Carl Bernstein. I think on your show, saying with Watergate under Nixon, they were close to 200 sources that were simply a name. So it's the nature of ice floes reporting and journalism to a great extent, sometimes to have on named sources. But Let's get to the heart of it. I mean, this has been certainly stirring around this controversy. It absolutely has. And I think it is great to have a chance to talk about anonymous sourcing because it is so often misunderstood, and reporters don't do enough to explain why and how we rely on anonymous sourcing number one. The source's heir, never anonymous to the reporters and to their bosses. You know, when I'm using anonymous sources for CNN, at least one of my bosses has to know if the story is very sensitive than multiple people are going to know the identity of this person. And we're going to have a conversation about why they're credible and why we're taking their word and why we're publishing it. You know that kind of checks and balances system is what journalism needs. And what the public needs to know happens so they can have more confidence in the reporting. You know, with with regards to the Atlantic, I think We also know a couple of things from Jeffrey Goldberg record number one. He has quoted John Kelly on the record before he's quoted James Mattis on the record before he clearly has journalistic relationships with some of these retired generals. And that's helpful to know if you're wondering who his sources might be for this story.

World Press Freedom Day amid a 'coronavirus crackdown'

"Today is World Press Freedom Day every may third back since the nineteen nineties the UN and advocacy groups have used this day to promote and preserve press freedom to promote the importance of a free press all around the world. Now it's a notable this year this time in the midst of an emergency and much of the world involving the coronal virus whenever there's a crisis some countries try to use the crisis to curtail news coverage or access to information and we are seeing happened. Right now The so-called Corona virus. Crackdown has been happening. In some countries with journalists feeling the pinch Being affected by this Miller. The CEO of the news literacy project wrote about this in a new op-ed foreseen dot com. He talked about the pattern of dictatorial regimes. Using covert nineteen to quash press freedom. We need to sound the alarm about that. Make sure we know it's happening and call it out. Let's all a part of these broader efforts to promote world press freedom day the Guardian. The paper based in Britain is out with its own ad showing support for the press. Says just like food? Facts are essential. Supplies Katharine Viner. The editor in chief of the Guardian joins me now covering your reflections. On why World Press Freedom Day matters it always matters but as he said he introduction. Brian I think it matters more than ever. Whenever there is a shock to the system governments will try to use that unless we keep an eye on we try to use that to crack down and it's essential that we try and stop that happening or at least attention to the fact that freedom of expression and freedom press is crucial to any democratic society and I think transparency matters a lot right now when good information and how you come to come to come to the facts can really help save

We have tremendous sites far as the do with China's concern believe it or not it's very important. But it's a very very small part of the kind of numbers. That we're doing right now since election. "Now, this was this was Sunday morning on CNN with with Brian Stelter and Carl Bernstein. Watergate fame, right. You just got to hear this. All right. Political hackery at its best. You're ready, and we'll explain why are right here we go. All right at the New York Times and CNN national security analyst, Carl I gotta admit I'm getting a little bit impatient. The waiting game is frustrating for a lot of yours at home as well. When you look at the media coverage of the past two years has the media's reputation been helped or hurt by the combination of news and speculation. I think you have to look at the larger context of the cold civil war that's going on in this country and the division in the country and clearly half of the country. Forty percent forty five percent of the most intense. Trump's supporters would say that we have been terrible. And then I think the rest of of the majority would say we've done a really good job. And I think we've done the media. The press has done one of the great reporting jobs in the history. A specially of covering a presidency by. By the most news organizations, and look let's look at where the dish information and mistakes and lying have come. From hasn't come from the press. It's come from the president of the United States. They're talking about the Russia investigation. That's what it is. Right there. This is the media's rush investigation. It's right there in front of it. Where do we start? I mean, I don't even know where to start the president lying about all that really. One of the when when the United States government did. The investigation on Russia. And Russia's interference. In the twenty sixteen election. What did they say the goal of the Russians were? To create chaos to create chaos and division within the country. We're not talking about the normal politics that goes on each and every day because you have. Every single democrat candidates saying it's our job to bring the country together. Trad socks. Oh, so you're really don't mean that then so politicians lie all the time. Politicians, great division all the time. Politicians great division as soon as they say, here's what I stand for which is why people like skater Babapora coup. Luli was trying to go out of his way, not to give any type of opinion on anything because he understood that it's very tough to say, I'm about uniting all of America together and all of us getting along because as soon as you come out and stake a position you're going to have a significant portion of the country who dislikes you for that position. So let's not be children about this now. So we know that that's what the Russians wished to do. Right. The Russians didn't care who won what the Russians and this is what the investigation of the United States government into Russia wanting to get involved in our elections. Their whole goal was to create division within the United States. Tell me. Who has borne Ben more allied with the Russians and promoting the narrative that as far as we know the Hillary Clinton campaign and the DNC paid Christopher Steele. The former British spy who got unverified false information from the Russians which then that narrative was used to create a dossier that came from the Russians that was used then to try to de-legitimize Trump's twenty sixteen victory in the presidential election was used to get a secret warrant to spy on the Trump campaign, and what was in that dossier. That was mostly falls. That's Michael is a cough. I will say now that after two and a half years. It's all bogus. Yeah. That the media jumped on and used for the last two and a half years in order to divide the nation. You know, something Carl Bernstein said, but you know, forty percent of the Trump supporters don't think the media has done. Good and the other half think the media has done great. Well, yeah. Because they bought into the why right? Roughly what is it forty four anymore poll you take before yesterday? Forty four fifty percent of the at any time of the people of the United States believed that Trump colluded with the Russians hacked the election. It was false. Well, of course, they're going to agree with you because they bought into your lie. But you tell me who if you wanna talk about who allied themselves and colluded with the Russians the most to create division in America, which the United States investigation into Russia. Meddling into the election found out that was their goal to cause division who caused more division in this country. By colluding with the Russians to promote their false message. Then the mainstream media. Please somebody tell me where I'm wrong somebody out there. Tell me where I wrong because you can't. These people sit on their high horse and talk about Trump creating division who sold the American people the false Russian message. The media over and over again. Over and over the narrative never changed. I mean, they use different words, they went down different avenues. But it was all about. Collusion. And he has the nerve to say well, the president. Of course, they know the president was we were telling the truth is the media was telling the truth. It was the president who was lying Amy Bernstein. What what what has he completely and totally lost his marbles completely. Yes. Because or he just knows there's no way to come out and say it once you've been married to it for so long. Yeah. You may have been onto something of Watergate. Well, the difference is in that case they could identify a crime, and guess what media Bernstein, all you, folks. You're the ones that carried the water for the Russians. Yes. You help the chaos go on for more than two years past the election. You want collusion? We got tons of collusion. And we can connect the dots. What's move forward? This Lindsey Graham. Yeah. Let's go ahead. Let's find out. Exactly democrats. We asked you before we asked you a couple of months ago, whether you were behind us, and we couldn't find one democrat that was for full transparency who's for full transparency of everything that exists out there. Democrats. Crickets, quiet because you don't actually want the truth. You've never wanted the truth you've been willing. To divide this country over a lie. That was told over and over and over again. The media carried the water for the lie. That the Democrats paid to get from the Russians. God. It's I mean, it's just. When you when you think of the entire story is just like, wow. By the way, he we hear and what I radio we've had a much better narrative than any democrat has when they try to indict Trump, could you imagine if it was reversed. Could you imagine if the media had on a Republican everything that we just stated right now? And on Fox News and on us and everything else. If you completely reversed it. Maybe going crazy. They absolutely just going crazy. Well, it would be a ticker tape. Parade moment for them. I mean, if you think about everything that every single movement in this case has been while this is it will play the audio once again condensed down the words, they're using. But they used them over and over again bombshell. This is a turning point. This is the beginning of the. The walls closing in. Funny. How they keep talking about the wall. They liked that wall. Well, here's the thing. They built that wall out of nothing. What do you think about it? You guys came up with your narrative come up with a ton more narratives, that's why I said, hey, when you look at it who carried who carried the water for the Russians message that Trump did that they they wanted to interfere in the election. Christopher Steele went to them. They gave him all sorts of crap. He sold it to the FBI. He sold it to a bunch of they willingly sell it. They willingly took it. They took the bait you want collusion with the Russians go to Comi Goto McCabe. Yeah. I mean, it's it's sorta straw, go to page and by the winter, Bruce or no one is disputing it. No. The Lisa page testimony. When that came out. Did you have anybody coming out going? Oh, no, no, no, no. She got that wrong or she's lying or no nothing. Bruce Nellie or their testimony. No said, call me. He's been quiet except now. I don't know. I think he's. He's lost an forest. I think he's lost. It's I don't know. What he's I don't know. What's on his mind did Brennan speak yesterday or has been quite Mugabe? I don't know house on yesterday. But I want to hear Brennan speak this week. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Former CIA director John Brennan, right? Or he told he told a bunch of lies didn't he well up until just a couple of weeks ago? I mean, there was one video of circulating of him talking about it. And it was all all of it. And by the way, he was really really emotional, and it was early on when you noticed new said, wait a minute. Why is he so insistent? Why why does he seem? Angry about this the way he talks about it over and over again. It's like he's going out of his way to protest this thing. He's clearly emotional about this. Well, we know why. Here's our next question. Does the other side and all those events lead to him. How connected is he looked former national security director, former CIA director, former FBI director, former assistant FBI director other people high up in the echelon of the of of the of the democrat party CNN MSNBC Washington Post New York Times carrying the message and carrying the water. What was the message they were carrying? And where did it come from the Russians? What was it meant to do was to divide the nation? Because because that's what we find out the Russians were attempting to do right, right? There were whole purpose to getting involved in two thousand sixteen was not to pick a candidate. It was too cause divisiveness in the United States. Tell me what what message from the Russians that we got from the Russians cause more division in the United States than anywhere else were did it come from the dossier. Which we now know was untrue. Bogus. Bogus. And they kept on with it. Anyway. Eight six six ninety redeye you may not.

"Back the audio sound bite. Here's Carl Bernstein. This is a montage of Bernstein, the great Watergate reporter hack, I should say. And we have a montage that spans February two thousand eighteen to March of two thousand nineteen and we can focus on any of them. But why not Bernstein? He's always been a clown. He's always been a hack. He's been unloading this Bs for two years. And let's just listen what molar is doing. He is going to present a vast narrative a report of the Trump family, Donald Trump, President Trump, the Trump organization Russia and the business dealings of the family the organization and the internal seen dealings of those people with Russians Ethno Russians Lawler has been very focused on. Trump's Russian dealings and with s no Russians the famous Trump Tower meeting, which indeed was convened for the purpose of collusion. The most serious counter intelligence people we have in the US government said oh my God. The president's words in action lead us to conclude that somehow he has become a winning winning or half winning pawn to Vladimir Putin, quote collusion or conspiracy to cooperate with agents of a foreign power despite with Donald Trump keeps saying about no collusion. No collusion. No collusion. People all around him appear to have been involved in some kind of nefarious relationships with Russians Donald Trump for the first time in his life is cornered. He is boxed in by Muller. And it's on the question of collusion. And a massive obstruction of Justice mother is now connecting the dots. They know everything about Russia. I think we've done the media. The press has done one of the great reporting jobs in history. How does this? How do they bring this guy back? How do they put Carl Bernstein back on the air at CNN? How did they put any of them back? But after this. Muller had nothing. There was never anything. What is Bernstein talking about? Here. If somebody in the Muller team feeding him false information, or is he just making it up is he saying what he hopes is going on because he knows it's going on. The world is closing in on Donald Trump for the first time. He's cornered. He's boxed in by Muller. The Christian of collusion. Massive obstruction mother is connecting the dots. They know everything Russia. They know nothing. I think we've done the press has done one of the great reporting jobs in the history. You haven't reported crap Bernstein, that's the whole point. You haven't reported anything you've got nothing, but a bunch of stenographers repeating what whoever is telling you you haven't reported digitally squat. You haven't left that studio. The find out anything because if you had you would have been able to report that there wasn't any collusion. Now, let's go to last night. CNN's special Sunday edition of Anderson Cooper nineteen. His guest Carl Bernstein. He says to Bernstein, I knew you thought there'd be more indictments Carl. I'd been led to believe that that that was a real possibility. I think the first thing is to recognize that the American system of Justice has just delivered to President Trump the greatest gift of his presidency. And that is indeed said that he did not conspire with a foreign power. I think we ought to talk a little bit about the elephant in the room. And that is what happened what happened with the Russians? We now have the ability to get as full story as we could ever get. So the elephant in the room is this report because it will tell us what happened. No carl. "Back audio sound bite. And let's just listen what Muller is doing. He is going to present a vast narrative a report of the Trump family, Donald Trump, President Trump, the Trump organization Russia and the business dealings of the family the organization and the internal seen dealings of those people with Russians Ethno Russians Lawler has been very focused on. Trump's Russian dealings and with s no Russians the famous Trump Tower meeting, which indeed was convened for the purpose of collusion to most serious counterintelligence people. We have in the US government said oh my God. The president's words in action lead us to conclude that somehow he has become a winning unwitting or half winning pawn to Vladimir Putin, quote collusion or conspiracy to cooperate with agents of a foreign power despite with Donald Trump keeps saying about no collusion. The press has done one of the great reporting jobs in the history. How does how do they bring this guy back? How do they put Carl Bernstein back on the air at CNN? How did they put any of them back? But after this. Muller had nothing. There was never anything. What is Bernstein talking about? Here. If somebody in the Muller team feeding him false information, or is he just making it up is he saying what he hopes is going on because he knows it's going on. The world is closing in on Donald Trump for the first time. He's cornered. He's boxed in by Muller and the question of collusion. Massive obstruction mother is connecting the dots. They know everything Russia. They know nothing. I think we've done the press says none one of the great reporting jobs in the history. You haven't reported crap. Mr bernstein. That's the whole point. You haven't reported anything you've got nothing, but a bunch of stenographers repeating what whoever is telling you you haven't reported digitally squat. You haven't left that studio to find out anything? Because if you had you would have been able to report that there wasn't any collusion. Now, let's go to last night. CNN special Sunday edition of Anderson Cooper nineteen. His guest Carl Bernstein. He says to Bernstein, I knew you thought there'd be more indictments Carl tiedeman been led to believe that that that was a real possibility. I think the first thing is to recognize that the American system of Justice has just delivered to President Trump the greatest gift of his presidency. And that is indeed said did he did not conspire with a foreign power? I think we ought to talk a little bit about the elephant in the room. And that is what happened what happened with the Russians? We now have the ability to get as full a story as we could ever get. So the elephant in the room is this report because it will tell us what happened. No, Carl we already know what had the elephant in the room as you. The elephant in the room is all you people, and why are you in the room? Chris. I love it. I love it. I gotta take a break. "Sources I'm Brian Stelter? We're talking about BuzzFeed story, which could be a smoking gun. If it's true. But those two words if true they're two of the most dangerous words in journalism. A lot of reporters have been through what those BuzzFeed reporters and editors are going through. Now, a story comes out, it could have profound consequences, but it could be wrong. According to a key spokesman thinking back to Watergate think back to the time this happened during Watergate, and let's talk about it with the man who was there who was living Carl Bernstein, the legendary journalist is joining me now to sort through all of this Carl I was hoping you could just react I to this BuzzFeed controversy you've been in this situation before. I think it's going to take time before we fully understand what the exact truth is here in terms of the facts, relating to Mr. Cohen, and whether or not the president directed him to lie and the facts regarding the kind of attribution in the story that BuzzFeed rambling which they attribute part of it not just to sources, but also to documents that the special prosecutor has its cetera et cetera. We don't know where we are with this story right now. And it's going to it's going to shake out also perhaps, and I would hope in Cohen's testimony coming up on the sixth seventh eighth of February. When the story came out on BuzzFeed, news dot com in the ten pm hour on Thursday, virtually every major news outlet in the country..

"Nine zero percents APR. Okay, guys. We're back ATN don't he's back. The Tony wanted to pick up where you left off hearing your mic on. Yeah. Okay. So the break ins occurred. It's a comedy of errors as we said. So. You know, Nixon as soon as June twentieth, and even June twenty third which was three days and seven or six days after the break in was on tape, which will talk about a little later discussing these incidents, and what to do about it. So the cover up started almost immediate cover cover up as what ended up getting Nixon and all the trouble. Okay. The break. And he's. No, he ordered this group. And they knew this group was around. He didn't specifically order the Watergate break in or no, Wisconsin. And matter of fact, thought it was a stupid idea do once he found out about it. Well, okay, here we go. Now, the Washington Post gets interested in this story and two young reporters of relatively anonymity back in those days you who became later famous. Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein pick up the story because they think it's kind of odd that there's five guys in suits and cameras found inside the Democratic National Committee. So they start snooping around and they start writing article after article after article, and that's where this character deep throat comes. Oh, deep throat was a popular porno movie of the day starring no one and only Linda Lovelace who was not very attractive. She wouldn't like her day was she relates to not related to store. Meters. Stormy just follow in her footsteps. I'm wondering now stormy I must say a lot more attractive than what Linda Lovelace. Well. Okay. Well, I'm not real familiar with all the different porn star. Sounds like you got a lot better background on that. But hey, Tony anyway, deep throat this. Character was meeting with Woodward in a parking garage and tipping him off on what leads to follow and the famous line is follow the money. Follow the money. So because these guys were found with bunch of cash on. How in the heck did all this money get to these burglars? And where did it come from? And it turned out that it was traced back to the committee to re elect a president. Oh, they were the ones funding these operations. And then as it turned out. They were also using campaign cash to quiet the burglars and to buy their silence, while the cases were being investigated. So you got a lot of sinister underhanded stuff here. They are bribing these guys to stay quiet. They're paying their attorney feeds they're buying their silence. One of the most interesting pieces of trivia is Howard hunt. His his wife got on a plane with ten thousand dollars in cash in her purse where she was going to deliver it to somebody. Well, what happened the plane crashed in Chicago and everyone on board died including e Howard hunt's wife. Dorothy, they found her purse loaded up with ten grand worth a and they trace the cash back to the Nixon campaign committee. It was strictly amateur hour and one one air after another guy's Kant was going to be quiet and was not going to tell things. But now he loses his wife and he gets all distraught. And he's. I mean, he's demanding three hundred fifty thousand dollars in expenses to continue asylum. And it just gets just keeps building on each other as well as very interesting, Tony. And while the stuff, I'm not even up to speed on. So I'm looking at the clock. We take a little short break. So hang in there. I'm going to get Rick stir and Dave up next and there joined the fray, so we'll take that little short break. News, weather sports. Everything you need..

I am in favor of the police officer who came to this country legally who did it the right way who love this country who wanted to protect you wanted to serve this country. That's in favor of. I'm in favor of that. What I'm not in favor of. Is the guy who killed them who came here illegally, and then had his family and his friends who tried to get him out of the country back to Mexico. That's who I'm not in favor of I'm not in favor of that. I am definitely not in favor of that. One eight hundred four seven four nine seven three two one eight hundred four seven four nine seven three to the wanna get your phone calls in here. See what you think about this? And a lot of your writing in on this talking about it. Why don't you just had been as far as border? It comes. You're totally right. The I've been watching media coverage. And they've now turn this tried to turn this engine. Nothing more than a race war. They're saying that anyone that's in favor of the wall is a racist. Anyone that is against the wall. Is somehow an American they're trying to turn into if I support this than I am a racist. Carl Bernstein today on CNN's, and he has get this audio ready because he said, the border wall is a symbol that says Brown people, we don't want you. This is part of this race war that I just mentioned to you. Listen to that. Watergate. Journalists Carl Bernstein talking about the wall, and he says this is nothing more than a racist while trying to keep Brown people out this again, this is the classic playbook at the Democratic Party. Here. It is we've never had a president that hates half the country that that really look at what we're talking about. We're talking about a wall here that is a symbol that says Brown people, we don't want you back to Trump talking about rapists goes back to talking about, you know, gangs, rather than looking at a real immigration problem, which we have had for a long time and need to solve and border security is one of those questions, it's complicated. And yet again, he's trying to solve it through misinformation. Disinformation those crossing the border are not are not to threat to to us in terms of national security. I wanna ask you I was having conversation at the top of the hour with Dana bash in Dan Pfeiffer. About you know, of course, covering taking this president's prime time. In fact, checking how challenging that.
