Number 20 asbestos removal operative. I've seen these guys work in these white suits. Wow. Don't say no of all of them. Just listen. And then just. I'm definitely saying no to that one though, 'cause you know how you are. You're all like, you're not going to want to remove asbestos. You're just not, okay, go ahead. That was number 21. Of course. All right, number 9, 19 is sewer cleaner. Number 18 is oil slash gas rig worker. These are the hardest jobs in America. Number 17 is a builder, like your husband. Number 16 hazardous waste removal worker. 15 search and rescue worker. 14. Home care assistant. 13. God bless them all teacher. Number 12, a minor going down into the earth, a minor, very dangerous. Number 11, a social worker. All right, we're in the top ten. Prison warden. That's number ten. Number 9. Hey, hey, hey. Number 9 farmer. Once again, you're looking for something that I probably could pull off. Number 8. Bomb disposal engineer. I have to admit. You're a little twitchy to be disarming the bombs. Hush, silence. That's the 5th hardest job in America. I think it should be even higher. Number four, the police officer, every day, you don't know what you're coming upon. There's always problems. There's always arguments. There's always people lying to you. Number three, paramedic every single day you're out there and you're looking to save somebody who is in a very precarious situation. Number two hardest job in America a doctor and the number one, according to this little survey, the hardest job in the USA, and these days, I think you can't argue too much with it, is nurse. So there they are at the 20th of them. All right, so I worked together with me a lot. Which one of those jobs? The hardest jobs in America do you think I could do? I feel that you could learn how and eventually get pretty good at being a sewer cleaner. I do. I feel like you could learn that. There's probably not a lot of math. There would be a nursing or bomb disposal. And you do like things that are clean, you're a clean man. We've pointed that out many times to how clean you are. So I think learning to clean a sewer, at the math free hygiene zone. I like it for you. I think you could do any of those jobs. It's will you have the patience to do any of those jobs? There's some math in some of them there, max, I mean, I don't know. And do you really think you think bob's gonna come to your house and give nana a sponge bath? I don't think so. As much as nana might want it, I don't think bob's up for that. I think but a sewer cleaner, yeah. And you could probably work alone, which you would like. You could have your earbuds in, you could be listening to credence or whatever. And you know, and after cleaning the sewer all day, I'll go home and be alone, too. You're gonna have to come in sewer cleaner. That's the out of the 20 things sewer cleaner. Nothing against the sewer cleaner community. I mean, God bless you, it has to be done. How about search and rescue? Search and rescue worker. I'm out there. Carrie, are you, are you in that part of the forest? The attention to detail, you know, the whole grid search thing, the whole navigating, no, and you know you don't want to be a paramedic. You know how you are about other people's bodily fluids. You're not going to like any of that. How about a teacher of certain certain subjects? Bob, we're struggling to get the basics taught in school, a class called choosing a restaurant. We're not going to get that funded. I don't know. That's a good point. It looks like here's what professor lacy is teaching this semester. Choosing a restaurant, why your taste needs adjusting? So it's in Maine to vacation. Even a liberal arts college is going to have more time with that. So it looks like sewer cleaner or maybe, you know, if I wasn't skiing so much asbestos removal operative. I could probably you're too much of a hypochondriac or too much contract for that. Okay, bob's first week as an asbestos removal technician. At the end of it, he develops a cough, and no matter how many times we tell him it's the pollen, he's convinced he has inhaled asbestos. And he lies awake at night, trying to listen to the asbestos fibers moving around in his lungs. True or false. That's true. It is. Yeah. Yeah. Whereas you getting down in the sewer in your protective boots and shoveling. I mean, you've been shoveling them in order here for a long time. Why not? Well, you know, you're right. Your job. "Is press play on KCRW. I'm Madeleine brand. The Paralympics begin today in Tokyo. More than 4000 athletes are there to compete in this year's games. And just like the Olympic Games, their families are not allowed to travel with them because of Covid. And that's a bigger problem for Paralympians because some rely on their parents caregivers. A few athletes even pulled out of the Games. Because of that, like US swimmer back up Myers, who won three gold medals and a silver in the 2016 Paralympics in Rio. Joining us now to talk about this is Amanda Morris. She's a disability reporting fellow for The New York Times High. Hi. Thank you so much for having me. Great to have you well. Parents were barred from traveling to Tokyo for the Olympics and the Paralympics. But I guess I'm wondering why weren't exceptions made for the Paralympians who really some of them really rely on their parents for basic needs. Yes. Interesting. You bring that up, because, um, while other athletes have dealt with, um issues not having their families their prepare Olympian, that really is different. It's not just about having support from your family. It's about having literal tools that you need to succeed in competition, and they argue that it's an accessibility accommodation that they required to compete. Um, so the U. S Olympic and Paralympic Committee has said that um to use personal care systems were not allowed into the games to two restrictions on the side that delegations But athletes argue that they've allowed in other essential personnel such as golfers, caddies, um, and that these personal care assistance should be Delegated as personal they should be delegated as essential personnel as well. Right. And so what does the U. S Olympics and Paralympic Committee said to that? They say that, um personal care systems are considered essential personnel. But athletes like Michael Myers say that they require one on one personal care assistance instead of the U. S Olympic and Paralympic Committee structure. Of having one personal care assistant for the entire team, which has multiple blind swimmers on it. For Becca Meyers, her experience in the 2016 Olympics is what caused her to push for a one on one accommodation. She was told during the 2016 Paralympics that coaches and teammates would be available to help her. But she found that nobody was around to give her the level of care and Support that she needed. She wasn't able to go to dining halls and wasn't able to successfully navigate on her own. She is both blind and death and said that she ended up sobbing on the floor of her hotel room. Because she wasn't getting enough to eat, and she was considering pulling out at that point in 2016. And then she did pull out in these Olympics. So what was behind that decision? Yeah, So after 2016, she decided she would never put herself in that position again, and she has fought for her mother, Maria Myers to regularly travel with her as a personal care assistant. Which has always been the case. Up until now, Um Even though her mother wasn't considered part of the team. The team allowed her mother to accompany her at all times so long as the family footed the bill. This year, however, because her mother wasn't considered part of the team. Her mother wasn't able to get any kind of credential to get into the games and be considered part of the delegation. And so she just wasn't able to have her mother with her, despite these requests, and despite past understandings in which her mother was with her And officials are saying that's because of Covid. We have to limit the amount of people who can come Yes, that is what officials are saying that it's because of covid so they can't bring all the people that they brought in the past. But again, um Paralympic athletes point out that they have allowed Golfers, caddies and as well as other essential personnel. And they argue that having one personal care assistant for an entire team doesn't meet the requirements of athletes like Becca Meyers or others like her, which I'd be happy to talk about. Right. There's a guy named Mikey Brannigan, who runs track and field. Um, he has autism, right? And what are the issues he faces not having. A personal caregiver with him. So, yes, Mikey Brannigan has an intellectual disability and his parents did actually consider pulling him out this year, but The Paralympic Games means so much to him that they've been trying to make it work. Um In 2016. He had a personal coach with him, Uh, In the past, you've had a personal coach with him named Sandra Robinson. And they said that in 2016, he did actually did not have a personal coach, which is what led to some issues. Um, I had at the 2016 Olympics. He was on the way to a training facility and because he couldn't have a personal care assistant with him. He ended up getting lost in an airport for several hours. And then once he got to the training facility They were told the parents were told that he would be supervised at all times. But then Mikey ended up accidentally misplacing another athletes equipment, which led to Misunderstanding and let's have some tension at the training facility that his parents believe could have been avoided if you had a personal care assistant Um And he also had some other, um, difficulties like He doesn't express pain to everybody. When he is hurt, he only expresses it to a few trusted people, such as his personal care assistant. And, um, he has some allergies that he might not. Be able to eat properly. If somebody isn't helping him, avoid the things that he's allergic to. So his parents were really concerned, and they ended up getting his personal assistant, Sandra Robinson, to go as his personal coach. But that does not give her access to his eating and sleeping areas. Um, to do US Olympic and Paralympic Committee says that there is a coach who was assigned to Mikey that will be watching him. But that coach has said that she doesn't feel qualified to tend to make these needs because with people who have intellectual disabilities You can't just put them all under the theme umbrella. They say that every single individual has their own needs and their own challenges. So this instance, Roslyn Clark is the coach that was assigned to watch Mikey Brett again. She's also assigned to watch her own daughter, Brianna Clark, who has an intellectual disability as well. And Roslyn Clark has said that her daughter's needs and Mikey's needs are very different. Right and so still, despite all that he's expected to compete and others as well. And just to end on a more up note. What are some of the highlights here looking for really quickly? Yeah, So this year will be the first time that we're having badminton in taekwondo in the Paralympics, so that will be fun to watch. Um, there will also be several superstar athletes to watch such as Jessica long. She's got 23 medals, and she is a Paralympic swimmer, and there's also Tatyana McFadden. She's called the queen of the track. She competes in wheelchair track, and she's a 17 time medalist. Who has won many races but not yet cleaned a Paralympic gold medal, so all eyes will be on her as well. And then another man that I can think of that would be interesting to watch would be David Brown. He's been called the fastest blind man in the world, So we'll be watching for his race as well. And in terms of events, wheelchair basketball, it expected to be very competitive. The U. S wheelchair basketball team has won the gold in 2016, and they are trying to defend it this year and then built your rugby. Also known as Murder Ball is a very, um Intense for it, and they're attempting to get the gold medal for the U. S team for the first time this year. They won silver in 2016 and bronze in 2012, so they're just looking to bump it up a little bit further..

That should never have gotten to this point. I want the us olympic and paralympic committee to work immediately to address this issue. And i want them to ensure that all of our athletes are able to compete safely at this summer's game. I reached out to the olympic committee to learn how the staffing decisions are made and allocated but they didn't reply to my request for comment. Nine of whom are also visually impaired. So one personal care assistant for thirty three parallel olympic swimmers insane. That doesn't make any sense at all. Yeah and then. In further misogyny we talk about nursing mothers. at first they weren't going to allow Nursing mothers to bring their babies at all but then they decided last week that they will permit athletes who are nursing mothers to bring their infants with them to the next month's months summer games and this was across the board this was for all nursing mothers on all teams right. This wasn't like it was one country saying oh to their nursing mothers no. This was an international olympic committee decision. And just as a personal story that spanish synchronized swimmer ona carbonell. Pardon me for Butchering that name to. She was told she could travel with her eleven month old son in partner but they all had to comply with the japanese government strict kovic nineteen regulations which means that her partner and her baby would have to remain in a hotel room outside of the olympic village for the duration of the games. And if she wanted to continue nursing she'd have to travel to the hotel and that would compromise her teams health amid the pandemic so she ultimately decided to leave her son home. And.

If you're a disabled veteran you got the va. They do not cover and you can go to the website. I'm not gonna bash the va bash away. I know they do. They do offer service dog assistance. But it's through the prosthetics department. Only for only eighty i programs programs and then the waitlist is about year and a half years and then even then you vet bills but you only get one routine veterinary care assistant so your dog eat something and has tested obstruction. You gotta bring a man for an emergency eight hundred dollar bill. You might be able to get the. Va to help. But they're not gonna do it. And if you're not a veteran and you got private insurance yeah if you have a disability and you have an oxygen tank or wheelchair or anything like that you filed Claim you pay your deductible. They'll even mail your new wheelchair parts through wheelchair. Well what happens when my dog breaks right on your own. I got hearing aids through the va about seven grand apiece and then lifetime batteries filters little plastic domes. That go on no questions asked. But damn me. If i say okay. Can you help me out on scout shots. They won't even think about. It is what it is Really hard you know. This is one of the reasons why tell people using a service dog is the hardest path aside for for ptsd and for other things too. I'm sure i'm sure that it's applicable in other situations with disabilities but for ptsd. One of the reasons that it's hard has nothing to do with your mental health with with training with your with your self evaluation. Anything that like that that has do with training. They feel like they have all this pent up rage and anger and they don't know where to target it and trump is pointing them in a direction and unfortunately it's sad to see a similar things happening in america right now. But the reason they're they're the fundamental reason is is one that is very very humid and the way the reason that this has happened to the way it has is someone has preyed on that vulnerability. Someone has preyed on their despair. The reason people are racists. Yes sometimes they just don't like the way people look but it's but a lot of it you know and maybe speaking out of turn because you know i'm not a political theorist from my own observation. Most the reason why a lot of people are racist in a movement is because somebody. 'cause things aren't good and someone said that if we blame these people things will be better. I don't know if you ever seen the big short heavy snow grow in the end of the movie. Female driver ever. She's one of the best rally drivers at. Yeah. Regardless of gender she's one of the greatest. and honestly like just watching a video of her rally driving makes me sweat. Over, yeah she's like she's the person who when we talk about. Like rally cars now are all-wheel-drive. Wheel drive. But when Audi showed up with quattro and just started smoking everybody that was Michelle. Meantime that was young Mouton Bay. mouton on the track. Yeah I mean. To your point James like drag racing of course is or was kind of dominated by women at one point all the force sisters were just tearing it up. There's really no reason.
