"Click on and you could see his shelf. In fact, we'll actually be showcasing some of that this evening, but as wear high top Madison Square Garden, that's the good the bad. Is this pope who has protected pedophile? So like so many previous probes a day before this summit that's supposed to be a Kalanick for the church to get all of this stuff out of their system and get them back on track for the petitioners. He goes before and assembled group of true believers in southern Italy, any says that those who criticizing constantly, criticized, the Catholic church are friends of the devil. So all those people for so many years. It'd been criticizing the church and talking about pedophilia. The sexual assault is sexual harassment. There wasn't going. There wasn't being addressed. By the church leaders. The daily news out front. Remember for many many years saying, hey, you gotta end this statute of limitation for victims that the Republican controlled state Senate kept in effect to protect the Catholic church. Orthodox Jews the boy scouts of America. Other groups said could be sued for a lot of money. So, you know, they wanted it to be basically outta sight outta mind. Didn't he the pope? If memory serves correctly used the term fake news as well. In the past. Yes. In fact, recalling it he had visited South America. Although did not go to his country of origin Arjun Tina 'cause he's in Argentine closer to Jake, lavar. Another Argentine ADHD JC in fact, used to be a bouncer outside of a club in Buenos Aires, eventually became a priest worked his way up to being elected the pope who who replaced German pope who retired normally replace a pope upon their death, the German Popo the one they used to call the German shepherd retired. And as you know, pope Francis. I from South America was elected into the position many people said, oh, he's so liberal. So progressive. You know, he just he's not following the conservative tenants of the church, but boy, he is being given a tongue lashing to those critics. So he visited Chile and there were a number of victims who were protesting about this one particular priest who I believe was Bishop series elation he committed and all these victims came forward and wanted a personal audience with the pope, which should have been entitled to rather than deal with that. Because he really liked this guy in his position. He says all fake news on his Alitalia jet going back to Rome. It's all fake news. And I mean Chileans started burning down churches, they started going crazy in the streets. And these were people oil to the Roman Catholic church. They couldn't believe that a pope looking at the weight of the evidence against this one person. I don't know what this person had over the pope that he would want to protect him eventually he resigned, but the fact is it caused tremendous chaos. But this type of comment causes chaos as well. Because yet again, it it this type of comment from the pope himself stigmatizes victims and victimizes them all over again. So if you were a victim. Of one of these priests or members of the clergy. So does that make you a friend of the devil? Now. That's what he said, you're a friend a cousin a relative of the devil. So, ladies and gentlemen, let's shake spoiler this discussion because I don't claim to be a victim of the Catholic church. Nobody preyed on me. When I went to Catholic school when I went to Catholic service. So I went to Catholic confessional. I Don I don't have any personal memories of any situations in which I was violated by none other than occasionally getting hit with a three foot ruler. And I deserved it. And it's funny. You mentioned that at cardinal Hayes high school, which I went to my freshman year. The only thing that the only interaction that we have with the brothers and the priests, and it was good interaction in terms of when we got out of line we were disciplined. So so so as you said there was after school detention, and you might take a pad a wooden pad to your backside. You might get mad at what you're talking about. It's called jug after school detention of which I serve quite a bit in Brooklyn prep. It was called Justice under God. That's why they call the jug. Either have a lay person, right or brother. Right. And you did not dare move your head to the left and right. And and and I don't know what it was like for you went for a carton ways. You're right. We could they want us doing work. You just had to sit there for an hour. Just look straight ahead and almost like have contemplation quiet contemplation over what you did to deserve jug. And sometimes people had weekly jug weekend jug, some guys have perpetual joke lifetime without parole, but it torture. They were consequences for your actions. So I had a lot of positive experiences. But I've often times said that I am in EMP Catholic ashes on Wednesday palms on Sunday. Then you don't see me for a month of Sundays. "You're listening to Gary Goldberg on money matters. And one of colleges basketball, legendary coaches a hall of Famer is my next guest. His name is Rick Pitino. Anybody who lives in New York with an athletic person a basketball fan knows the name Rick Pitino former coach of the New York Knicks. But unfortunately, a scandal force the revocation of Louisville's title back in two thirteen and coach Pitino welcome to the program. Thank you. You've written a book Patino my story, and that's what I want to get to. And I want to get right into it little background coach. Adidas was found to have taken part in some pay for play scandal involving recruiting a student. Brian Bowen who went to Louisville. Tell us what happened in that incident. And also, whatever happened to Brian Bowen, Brian in his mom, I still believe to this day knew nothing about what was going on. But data's apparently was dealing with his Christian Dawkins to allegedly send us your mental Louisville. And whether the dad was in on it or not to what extent, I'm not sure. But I don't believe the the young men as well as the as well as the mob do anything about it. So so let's set this up what happened Adidas would funnel. Apparently, according to your book one hundred thousand dollars to the family of the player then had a deal with Louisville. For one hundred and sixty million dollars, which is no small change, the even a university of Louisville size. And where did the implication come in that you had to basically get fired your own words in this scandal? It gets a little complicated. But in a nutshell, what happened was a new board of trustees the old board of trustees that was very supportive of the athletic director at logo as well. As myself was fired by the governor who say in the book was behind a lot of these skulduggery that's gone on. He brought in a totally foreign board not loyalty university. And so I hold them accountable for what they did. But more. So I hold the FBI and the southern district of New York for putting my name in a complaint along with Jim Larranaga of Miami. Who by the way, got a two year extension? By mentioning this scam artist who came out and said, oh, we'll go to Rick Pitino. He's the big deal with Adidas. And we'll call them up and tell them to get more money. He was so at this bravado in front of the FBI not knowing they would have and they put my name complaint from the scam artist. And that's what led me to be dismissed by the university of local. So you're shred of evidence. No wiretaps nothing. That's. Implicates me to this intuitive scam that they were pulling off with the FBI. So the average person who's going to read the book is going to hear your side of the story because that's what it's about. But how does a legendary coach like you? And I put you up in the hall of fame with coach K and John Calipari. You guys should be on mount Rushmore of college basketball coaches, how do you get singled out, basically in a scandal that affects you and your career and your legend? Well, the same way Jim Larranaga. Did it's it's there's only one reason he's studied a case. There's only one reason that the he's the southern district of New York writes up in the complaint that coach to who coaches at a university with twenty two thousand one hundred people something like that. And everybody takes a second grader to figure out who that is begins with L and ends in any. Yes. So do that. And you realize after going through the whole southern? District the what they've done all they would do it is using the publicity if they would have gone on this got the podium and say, well, we're gonna rest for assistant, college, basketball coaches and Adidas ripped into skin modest nobody would even care but by putting my name in headlines, and then I laid it get the Smiths. They made national news everywhere. Whatever happened to Peterson the scandal. Coach Pitino whatever happened to Adidas. Well, Dita's is it to the people that data so three I think have been indicted to have been indicted, one other person cut a deal a plea a plea bargain. So it's the trials coming up in a few weeks. I think it's it's somewhere mid October did Louisville ever get one hundred and sixty million. And if so are they using the brand on their uniforms. Oh, one hundred percent Adidas as well. As Nike and under Obama by all be here versus even for a lot more money than sixty eight million. And and and that's the. That's the scam of the whole thing is if if Louisville was so incensed about what Adidas was doing. They would immediately. Back the money contract null and void and got into another shoe company. Exactly. So let's talk about the kids the kids in many cases thickly in basketball, come from inner cities poor urban areas. They are tantalized by the opportunity to number one become a celebrity to potentially go into the pros. The one and done discussions have been going on for a while. And at the same time does money filter to them and their families under the table in your opinion by universities. I e we all have too much to lose the guys you mentioned earlier myself would make him in excess of five million dollars a year. Nobody's going to jeopardize their future their reputation that monetary gains to get any play. We it's very easy when you're at Kentucky Louisville Duke North Carolina to get over to get the great players. You don't have to cheat. But the shoe companies trying to get these players winded done. Playing signed him to a contract, and they're the ones not so much in this case this case was unusual. I haven't seen anything like this where the shoop he's got involved with a prospect. They usually get involved with grass roots programs at the lower level. When the kids are freshmen sophomores juniors nice school. They get involved with the parents, and that's wizards agents and runners ensue companies infiltrate the young men's lives. So do they provide jobs to family members? And they do it in a sub rows away where or or a way, which at least avoids the NCWA rules. No, I think it's more agents get involved with the families, then these shoe companies do the shoe companies get involved with the programs and the players but the agents in the run are the ones that I think break the rules. Rick Pitino I started on money management firm and number years ago sports management. Vision I headed for one year, and I closed down because I was getting quite frankly, the bottom of the barrel is potential recruits, but they would show up with their pilot fish, meaning their friends their family, and they wanted me to feed them house them. Find them women. I close it down in one year. This was not for me doesn't this permeate the industry. Well, it's it's I would never wanna be an agent. I I would never want to represent because just what you said that there's too much going on right now that. Give you a little background. Do you? Remember the play Jamal Mashburn from New York City. Of course, you can picture what he looks like. Yes. He's cardinal Hayes high school in the Bronx, well, Jamal in his similar year was going to be a top five pick in the grabbed his mom asked me to fly to New York to see if I could invest his money. Helen, I know very little about money that time I said, but I'll fly to New York, I'll meet with Goldman Sachs Jesse Morgan so and the Merrill Lynch and I woke mareo Cabello gabelli assets. I wound up going with gabelli asset for him got him an agent and this Jamal Mashburn and high since that time thirty two years now we've been business partners inner together for thirty two years span from me flying to New York to find out who we should invest money with. So that's a good story. That's extremely well. We car dealerships. We own a lot of different ventures that have been successful. But doesn't happen that way. Usually usually the agents turn out to be a they change two or three times before they settle on one agent. So it's not a scenario. Even now, you have the Tim Duncan headlines going on where he got ripped off. You also have the Alan Iverson story where you, unfortunately. Lost this money. It's so important for coach to identify kids with good character and good basketball skills. Isn't that true? It really is. I always have I gotten into one basketball player. Title. Mike pros, Mitchell and Terry were hearing Gordon Chang mantras Harrell. None of them were even ranked in the top fifty Jamal has wasn't ranked in the top seventy. So I looked for what I call PHD's passionate Hungary group in play is driven to want to succeed and put in the extra time, and I've been very lucky with that formula, the PHD acronym instead of play here, dummy, I like your description a lot better. Might you look to coach again if the opportunity presents itself coach Pitino. No, that's why I wrote this book I wrote this book for closure. I felt that I've been demeaned I've been by so many different factors. You might never had to cheat. In college basketball. I never had any desire to break. The rules of always done it by out working people in my mind, although all my peers supports extremely hard. But in every job, I've I've had from providence to the Knicks to Kentucky to Louisville. It's always been foundation of a strong work ethic. Put in the time put any energy be passionate about what you do. So never had a desire to break the rules. And and this is really soured me when the United States government and more more important, the southern district of New York could take away your heart and just use your publicity without any evidence. Last question. I I took a lottery ticket. S just because I wanted to give him by an ex FBI agent and their response when the FBI went in and said, look, he didn't do anything wrong. His at biology his his his lie detector report. Their response was look we deal with collateral damage all the time, and that kind of said it's time to move onto my life coach Pitino last question time for what do you think of the idea that players should be paid at the college level? Being paid. They're getting a fifty sixty thousand dollars scholarship. Then they get what's what's called the cost of attendance second range anywhere from two to five thousand then they get a Pell grant, which ranges from four to six thousand. So they are being paid and it's tax free. Yes. So above that. Should they get paid more while I believe above that they should win? The NCWA tournament comes around their parents should be able to fly to wherever they ought to go. See him play housed in and be accommodated with food and and things of that nature of of because the the billion dollar industry much madness. And every player who plays in in that should be allowed to have their parents come and join it what a great opportunity it is for me. And for my audience to hear your story. The name of the book Patino, my story, as I said, I maintain that you should be on the mount Rushmore of coaches in any sport. Thanks for being on the show. Well, thanks for having me. "Both teams went on ten plays. Seventy five yard drives to open up today. Shamming Jones with a touchdown reception for Rutgers the first of his career for the redshirt. Freshman from cardinal Hayes high school in the Bronx ski Scott for Indiana Radwan in from sixteen yards out on a third down and ten. So it's first down Indiana from their own twelve yard line painting Ramsey and the shotgun will roll to the right? He's got some pressure coming. He's looking he's thrilling and it's incomplete overshot as intended receiver. Nick Westbrook on the near sideline at the eighteen. Great coverage by the Rucker saw nice down the field as Ramsey's able to extend that play out the pocket. But there was nobody open at good pressure from defensive line as well. So far the defensive is doing the job again pressure on Ramsey. Scott in the backfield lines up to the right of paint Ramsey four whites twins on each side. Takes a snap hands. It off fixed. The hand off quick throw by Ramsey out to the right. It's Donovan Hailu mixed to catch kick that other reception. Jay, Sean, Harris not much. They're just back to the line scrimmage. A Warren does a great job of again, getting cut getting off the ground. That's like almost like an option scree pass, which I I've got a sacred. I've never seen anything like that. You fake the dive back. You look like you're running a bootleg to the right? And it's actually a screen pass. Indiana with twelve place so far ten of them have been passed plex trips. Right. Ramsey and the shotgun. Rutgers hinting at a blitz Morris approaching the line of scrimmage. He's coming Ramsey to throw out to the left is caught right near the first down marker. Did he get enough? It looks like he did at the twenty two yard line. That was a good spot where he went up to get it and on the reception for Indiana. That is Donovan hail abra young as do a better job of nowhere to sticks. Are it's thirty nine right there. Chris abor yoga's twelve yards. Deep to yards behind the sticks. You gotta sit down with sticks Ramsey on first down play action pressure comment. Hey as dropped drilled coming up. The middle is John panicky on the sack for the scarlet knights for Mr. bad. Keep his first sack of the season. Now's a nice game right there by the defense got to get you guys going out with their one wrapping around and they played it off perfectly. And as you said it. They're getting pressure on Ramsey today. A little bit of an assist late to the party. But we'll give by convert awesome credit there too. That's a loss of seven Ramsey, Texas. Snap wants to pull it down and run. He'll run left to the twenty. Twenty-five Ramsey has the first down out across the thirty yard line and out of balance at the thirty seven and he is dangerous with those legs as he picks up twenty two yards. But you know, when you talk about the offense progressive Rutgers is gonna go man they gotta have someplace by the quarterback. They Whitman across the board. But nobody had the quarterback. And once you get past that first level, it's all Greek grass, four minutes left in the opening quarter. Indiana will run it on first down ski Scott runs into Deontay Roberts. No game at the thirty eight yard line. I will say this. Lot more energy on this defense. Got a little bit of identity. Got a little fire behind you. Swagger. I'm gonna play basketball. Ramsey will go to the shotgun. Once again. Receivers to the left. He's got an h back left down since a man in motion you'll handed off Scot again up the middle and again Rutgers. Not fooled only a yard Kevin Wilkinson there on the tackle. Visit the position that you want to put rancid thirty nine. Spree passes slam him over distance make the pressure. To get the ball back. Throw it to. Trip slept. Third and nine the Indiana thirty nine yard line Ramsey shotgun. Claps his hands tried to get Rutgers to jump Mike McKenzie. In the backfield them checks with the sideline fans. Get loud. Four that front for Rutgers. Takes the snap stepping up head. Is he throws the next caught? I down across midfield. Deontay Roberts made the tackle on time. Fry Fogel at the forty nine of the scarlet knights a gain of thirteen. This defense is putting this Indian offense thirty nine thirty nine. And they can't get off the field, Eric when you have a thirty nine. There is not too many plays that any offense coordinator has in his arsenal to make thirty nine the Rutgers gotta do better job of covering the back end planning sticks. The right.

Different pockets. Rick Pitino was a guy is a guy who I enjoyed watching coach. I watched him at the Nick level. I watched him at Louisville, and what a great story and a terrific book Patino.
