"New patient right now. Because if you're patient you can buy literally like i'm showing you. You can buy new cars for the price of used cars. And this is what. I find surprising on this particular example. Bruce because we're talking about a gti. It's not an suv. It's not a truck. As not really i mean. It's a good daily driver. It can be a family vehicle. But where i'm seeing most of the. The extreme pricing is on vehicles with a little bit more practicality with a little bit more daily use like suv's pickup trucks. Yeah we're seeing that. Certainly. there's we just saw on on hatchbacks and sedans. I've been seen a lot more on on trucks and suv's So since my other link didn't work. And i apologize for that can you do. Can you give example. Yeah i'll i'll give you some. Let me start with a question to you. John because you owned a kia soul previously. What what year was that. Two thousand fourteen two thousand fourteen. Do you mind if i ask what you paid for it. No twenty was loaded. It was like top case noted. I'm going to say twenty six. Oh wow okay. So you got one of the snazzy souls did it come with the hamster suit one of my things. If i was because i was close to a soul if i was going to get a key i had to get a hamster suit. I found yesterday. This is at a major league. It's at. I found out here in rapid city. South dakota just just one of the buy here pay here lots. Twenty twelve kia soul. I don't know what the model is. It didn't have any markings on the outside. It looked like it had basic aluminum. Wheels silver it did not look fancy at all. The mileage wasn't listed. But there are some pretty good dance in the hatch. The clear coat was blown off the mirrors priced. Fourteen thousand four hundred ninety five dollars or two thousand twelve two thousand twelve or thirteen thousand four hundred ninety five dollars. I looked that up under a kelley blue book value with average miles which they listed as one hundred and three thousand. That's got retail of about seven thousand. That's a private party value. So generally they say dealers will be a bit more. Which frankly i think is a bunch of crap. There's there's some of my buying advice From somebody who has worked with deals in the past just because it's at a dealership doesn't mean it's it's taking better taking care of the th degree You can usually negotiate that down. But yes seven so over. Double what you would normally expect for a kia soul and that blows my mind out here because this this dealership. The this used car dealership is literally a mile away from the brand new kid dealership. Where admittedly they. I think right now. They have two souls on their lot. But when i was looking at a at a soul last year or was it the year before time flies. That mean they they were having. They weren't even getting many in because nobody wanted to buy around here. So i think i think the american public or just our american society has this habit or behavior of just wanting a new car or a different car. All the time yeah. I don't think. I don't think all these people buying used cars at these. Higher prices are people who are just in a position where they need a car. I think is just people love getting out of their current car and into a different car and at the moment. They can't buy a new car so they'll take a three year old car four year old car because it's different than what they've got and of course you know the Borrowing fees and finance rates are historically low. And all that is just. We love not holding onto cars jammed but once once this market balances out once new vehicle. Production picks back up. Those used car. Prices are not going to be there and anybody. That finance is two or three year old car for the same price as a brand new one folks. Just don't do it. you're gonna be over your head. Yeah i mean unless you got serious money to burn you're going to be over your head if you can be patient at all. Now hold your out a little bit. I know we're getting kind of preachy. Here but interposition to sell a car a used car and not have to buy wonder a place. That's where you to be if you got extra cars line around now's a good time to sell it and actually i do because now. Both my wife and i work from home. We have two cars but we really don't need so i've been thinking about selling The one we never drive which has chevy spark ev. Which i thought. I'm never gonna sell this for anything is probably going to get more than i ever thought i would. If i if i sell it you know what john i was going to save this for later but i need to share waste so i know what the surprises because you told me but while you guys were talking i looked up a different example than was originally looking for just extend this just a tad so i own a twenty twelve subaru outback. My wife and i have been looking into getting a new one and this is just agree just to me. So this is a twenty eighteen Outback three point. Six are which so. That's the three point. Six liter flat six seven nine ninety eight mile and that has let me scroll down just subaru's they've always held there recently. Got two thousand miles. So i got to give credit like. That's i mean that's crazy. I mean it's thousand miles but it's brand new car but it's also three years old for three years. That's a good point. It's been waiting for somebody to buy. Let's look at this is for the twenty twenty two model so for thirty seven. I can have a three year old model or the onyx edition which is like the semi offroad model. I can have a wilderness for thirty eight thousand dollars more. And let me scroll up. That's with destination one though. And then let's that's what's driving all of this. You have to be able to find these new car. You can put an order and wait and you can put in an order way by the way i do want to put a shout for Car vanna because if if you wanna sell your car and don't want to deal with people carbonneau i have found is offering the most for used cars. Okay so if you just want to sell your used car and don't wanna deal with people they are. They are Giving really good prices for used cars and he just come and pick it up and leave so you know so. That's what i've been looking at. Whenever i want to get an idea of how much my car is worth. I'll run it through carbon price checker. For how much. They would buy it from interesting. I should look into that with the mazda. Four gyp over to anthony. I wanna to do one other thing before and we'll do you surprise later john. I promise this is. This is another vehicle. That i wanna point out. I'm gonna share the screen. I i'm not gonna give any prices. Let me let me share the screen on this. This is a two thousand one ford f. One fifty supercrew told me about this. Yeah i mean here's a picture of it. This is advertised at a at a dealer near me here if you want to look at it as you buy. I won't mention the dealer I mean looking at this picture. We can see the tailgate is beat up right. Oh yeah the tailgate is beat up in it. The the passenger side running board looks pretty tweet up there. If got those aftermarket rain shields along the.

Buy a used car with a 30-day return policy

"Owing to tell you something. I was driving down a freeway. And i saw a billboard then that was like right it was a billboard for carmax and it said that carmax was giving you a thirty day to return vehicle for a refund. After you buy it. I was like was some kind of market test. Or what is this. So i get on car max website and it's the real deal bay facing a lot of pressure from carbon have really had to step up their game and now they're doing touchless deliveries and all this kind of stuff. Stead a carmax is original business model. Which was where you went to these giant parking lots and you went around with the salesperson and you would run around in a short test drive and all that so now. They're really trying to respond to the marketplace and carmax now is doing twenty four hour test drives which gives them a real leg-up on their archrival. Karvina where you no obligation you can test drive a vehicle for a full twenty four hour period and that fits if you think about something. I've talked about for the last. Oh i don't know twenty five years there when there is a model maker model. You're interested in that you go rent that car for a weekend or suv or whatever to really experience it which you can learn so much more than you can from ten minute test. Strive well carmax pay. You can go test drive a vehicle for a full day and then if you do buy it then you've got that month to decide whether or not you like it or not and if you don't as long as you don't go over the miles they allow you to go and stuff like that you just take it back. And say hey. This was nice not for me. And you're done. And what i love about what's happening in the dynamic part of the us vehicle market is it's all about focusing on what the customer wants and eliminating pain points carbonneau. Which i mentioned is one of the fastest growing companies in the united states and they keep losing money apparently but they are all about market share and the us vehicle market very heavily oriented toward selling used vehicles to people under age. Forty who buy a vehicle right on their smartphone and finance it if they want right on their smartphone and then you can go to these gimmicky. vending machines if you live in a part of the are you've seen the vending machines. They locate them on high traffic. Carter's usually by interstates and you go in. And you put the special token in there and the vehicle comes down an elevator and you get in it and you drive away and so it's pretty crazy. You also have the right to return a carbon vehicle for seven days and what's happening in the us. Vehicle market is the market share of traditional dealers who play the rough and tumble games and second. You leave the what you're stuck with. A piece of garbage used vehicle would no right to return and all that they are steadily. Losing market share to The car maxes and carbon and the imitators of the two of them that are popping up around the country. I was very disappointed. In one of the large traditional dealer. Groups is now opening their version of a supposedly customer-friendly us vehicle lot in more and more cities particularly around the south and the west. And they don't give the customer friendly things of clear pricing the right to return for a full refund for all all of that and so traditions die hard and industries but when you buy a used vehicle know that still even though these players that are customer friendly or the fast growing ones most used vehicles are still sold in the hostile anti consumer environment of their traditional used vehicle market. Be careful but i don't care where you buy your used vehicle. I want you to have it out by a mechanic of your choosing with a seller. Who allows you a right to return for a period of time for a full refund. When you're when you have that vehicle in your possession have it checked out during that time. If you're buying one from a traditional anti consumer dealer either a new car dealers used car that sandy consumer or a used car lot that sandy consumer you need as part of a condition of purchase to check out that van and have the vehicle checked out by mechanic prior to your commitment to buying a dealer will not agree to those conditions. They got something to hide. And that's not where you buy your vehicle.

Channel approach that is where customers are able to shop online in showrooms or by using what he calls a seamless combination of two, and perhaps that's what buyers need their choice of how to shop finance and take delivery of used car rather than being railroaded into one process or another a misstep by Elon Musk might be instructive here. Remember back in February when he announced that tesla would move to online only sales people were outraged and must quickly softened that stance. "James good morning. Good to have you. Good to be with you. Talk about. So let's start first with Venezuela. Big news of the day yesterday that the president has announced that the United States. No longer recognize recognizes nNcholas Maduro as the president of the country instead officially recognizing opposition leader one Guido as the head of the country. How big of a deal is this. And what does this mean for the United States in terms of our commitments? Yeah. Yeah. I've seen the part. I didn't like about what you said is is is Trump because it's not just Trump actually a number of other very important countries. Many key Latin American countries and even the European Union and Donald Trump or on the same wavelength. So this is actually an international response to that as well. And I and from from the US perspective, I think it's just the logical continuation of what this administration is doing which is which is looking we're mainly concerned about Venezuela because one of the unitarian crisis and to the impact it would have destabilizing the region this administration has found as from the beginning has been pushing the right buttons to play presses administration, which is but by all accounts, just just terrific. They put the entire country in poverty, and and and the country's become literally ungovernable. Do you think I mean, you know, yesterday, you have Medeiros like, hey, US diplomats out of the country gets seventy two hours pump Heo responding with? No, you're not in charge anymore buddy, the international community as you point out James recognizes a different person as the leader of the country. Is there a chance here that we'll need military action in order to sustain this change in regime from the United States? Look, I don't think that makes sense from a from a US perspective Venezuela's, not a vital interesting United States. I think you only put boots on the ground in harm's way. When a vital interest is at stake. It would be an enormous commitment to to try to do something like that. Which would I think be a significant straight in the military, and and there are probably regional countries that ought to be stepping up. So wanna I wouldn't advise that and to it doesn't sound very Trumpian to me. Yeah. What does it take though to to turn a country like Venezuela around that it's just been driven so into the ground? I mean, you want to buy a loaf of bread you need, you need a wheelbarrow full of currency in order to do that. And how much of a role is American half America going to have to play in that economic recovery. Well, I actually think Venezuela would recover very quickly. Remember, they have significant revenue from oil. They they they. The foundational. They have a good economy. So what you just let the free market do do its job the bounce back. Pretty quickly. All right. Let's talk about the immigration deal with the president of the media outlets everywhere saying that President Trump linked the president. He he he he caved to Nancy Pelosi by not giving the state of the union address. Do you first of all with the state of the union? Do you believe that he did he blink? Does it look like he's going to fold on immigration? Well, look, I don't think the state of the union address where I think those two things that's just political back and forth, as as you know, as far as the deal go. I always thought that that the request that is in the was reasonable. I mean, you know, if you if you well give me money to build a wall two thousand miles long a hundred feet high. We don't we get that. But that's that's not what the request is the the actual request for borders is perfectly reasonable and under any other president wouldn't be controversial. So that's all about politics. I think from my perspective putting DACA and TPS on was wrong. I think that's an amnesty, and you can argue well, it's just for three years. So it's not permanent. It's not a path to citizenship. But look the dirty little secret is we know how this works. If you give somebody a status like that. The government never late. They'll never let you take it away. So essentially, it becomes an amnesty. And then it becomes a precedent for policies in the future. So I thought that putting that on the table is mistake, particularly since there's zero chance the dams are likely to pick it up and take the deal while there's some conversation James that after today's failed votes in two Senate bills, which is great by the way, they were voting on to Senate tells that everybody's nose is gonna fail at the conclusion of that. There's some talk that maybe Democrats will start creeping and Republicans direction if the president can offer a broader protections for Dhaka recipients, and I we saw some reporting the Republicans are supportive of some Republicans in the Senate are supportive of giving green cards to Dhaka recipients. And that would of course, put them on a pathway to citizenship that that's something you would clearly be against right? I would I would look if we defer lots of things for lots of people you can't pay your taxes. We give you more time to pay your taxes. You you've been convicted of a crime we give you much to get through. Acting for your Joe, I I would be fine as a humanitarian gesture because people didn't put themselves in the situation if you wanna give a person either on temporary status or doc recipient who needs to leave the country time to to get their affairs and were complete college or whatever take a couple of years fine. But there has to be clear end date to that. And at the end of that has to be a clear requirement that you leave the country. So if somebody said, here's a temporary status. You know, here's a Greek out. But you your your your status terminates on the state on the state, you have to leave the country that would not be an amnesty the way this is framed as just an open ended, you you are benefiting from a crime having been committed, and we are rewarding your for that. That is an amnesty. No matter how you how you twist the English language. What about this idea that I keep seeing that Dhaka the program in and of itself is a legal since it was created via executive order was a change to the immigration law. That did not come from congress. Why does? The administration just push that through the courts to get it to the Supremes then we could solve this entire problem. Hey supreme court said it's illegal. Well. It's in the court system. I'm not alert you'd have to get a lawyer to do that. I've always argued if we're going to adjust these things it's appropriate to do it not by Fiat from the White House, but through a legislative process legal immigration reform ought to be something. And and here's the problem with what I don't like about this because this is a recipe for failure. That we've had going all the way back in nineteen Eighty-six is when we start to bundle these things together and make compromises in trade offs. We just went up with crap policy in the end, if you really want to deal with these issues in a in an application sway and not political way you can't bundle them you have to deal with each one separately. We should just be having an honest conversation about what do we need at the border for somebody to stand up and say, you know, we just need technology at the border. You know, we don't need the wall. I mean, that's like somebody saying, okay, I want a car, but I only want a car with the steering wheel. But but no breaks. I mean, it it doesn't work that way. So bundling the debate doesn't make it. Easier. It just makes it more likely. We're going to do more stupid things to get something where everybody can live with which may be politics gets done. But it doesn't secure the border, and it doesn't, you know, rationalize our immigration system. It leaves America just as frustrated as it wasn't it decided, you know, who should become president. Let's make Donald Trump president just to send a message James Carbonneau. Thanks a lot, sir. Appreciate it. Thank you. All right. Eight fifteen now..

"Tow truck showed up at somebody's work at the parking lot. Drops vehicle, right? From the tow truck will not. Drop it. But that's the term. They call it and person signed something on a tablet, and they had their car and they were done. So this is something that has such extreme high customer satisfaction. Never ever having to walk in a dealership that the people that were the new players and how people buy vehicles twenty five years ago. Carmax are now having to adjust our producer Chem who recently got a new to her used vehicle. That you paid cash for first time ever you ended up buying a vehicle kind of like somebody would buy one from Carbonneau. But you did. So with carmax are dead. I didn't know it was going to be an option. I am very much like the people you mentioned and have no desire to ever go to a car dealership again in my life. And so I was looking on carbon. I just couldn't find the car within the parameters I was looking for you suggested carmax and as much as is like I'm going to have to go to the dealership when I was looking online. There was an option that popped up at said get it transferred to your local carmax or get it delivered to your home or office. So I was like, okay, I'll try that. And it turned out to be the exact carbon model, but I guess the only difference is with this one. You're not actually buying it. When you sign up to have it delivered to your home or office. You can send them away when they show up with the car and say, you know, what this isn't the car. I wanted you still have the seven days if you decide to buy it to get it checked out and say, you know, what I actually I don't like driving it. But when they bring it to your home or office for the test drive, you you have no obligation whatsoever. So when they came in and dropped the vehicle for you. And you had the chance to give it the once over and go and drive it. How long did the process take from that point until the carmax person was gone Jared off? Yup. They were they pulled up probably at about top fifteen and they were gone by one PM, so forty five minutes ish, and that included the time of you checking it out and driving at included the test drive to test drive actually wanted to try to. So this is something that a lot of us. We don't buy vehicles that frequently and the changes happening in the vehicle market are so large because people in their twenties and thirties will not I'm telling you. They will not put up with the grind. They will. That's when dealerships trying to get your hungry, and mistreat you and all that stuff. It's not gonna work in the future. And it's being led by people who were buying. They're usually their first or second vehicle. That will not ever set foot in a dealership again, I I can tell you have you will never be on the grounds of a car dealership again after this experience. Now, this was so lovely, and like I said I didn't actually officially by it before they brought it to my home. So once I drove it and decided, yeah, I want to get it. It didn't show up on a tow truck, which is what we were kind of excited about it. But it actually got driven there by someone from the dealership, and then they were followed and what they call their mobile office fan. So once I decided to purchase it. Bay opened up the mobile office man, and it's like a really cuss little setup like with a little couch and a printer and all this, and you do the paperwork that you would do at a dealership in the van looking at your house from the driveway and do you ever since as this everywhere in America? There's a carmax I truly don't have a sense of that site did not research it, but I do know that if you pull up carmax his website it pulls up right away. And there was no immediate like Asterix only available in. I think the odds are in your favor might be around. All right. Thanks, karen. Diana's with us on the Clark Howard show. Hello, diane. Hey, Clark has been doing great. Thank you. You chose poorly where you located in the United States, didn't you? Well, I guess you could say that I think that might taxes are fairly low in my property taxes, and that kind of thing living is fairly low. But you live where you are deprived of the privilege of shopping wear. Co. See that's just a bridge. Too far from me. I live three miles from my closest, Costco. I wish it was like across the street. That's funny. I don't even know a lot about Costco. But utah. I listen to you all the time, and you're talking about Costco, and it's like. I don't have one near me. So I wanted to know what can somebody like me who is nowhere around one can do. Well, you could cry a lot. I could do that. Costco is a unique kind of retailer because it's basically a membership co op that you join they charge extremely low markups on the stuff, they sell the lowest markups and retail apparently and the markups. They charge just to be able to operate the buildings pay for their leases and pay their employees and all they try to do also break-even on their operation, and they make their money on the membership fee that you pay each year. So the things in there a lot of it. Do you have a Sam's Club near you? I do. Yes. So I'd say somewhere fifty to sixty percent of the merchandise is common or very very similar across SAM's and Costco. The difference comes in what Costco refers to as the treasure hunt. It's the items that they're buyers find that are very clever or fashionable or whatever and those items also come with a very low markup, and they use that treasure hunt is the reason for you to come back. It's really something that if you don't live near one it's really.

"Have you with us here on the Clark Howard show, where it's about you learning ways to keep more of what you make you may. Or may not have heard the news reports that a number of the nation's largest banks are facing a very heavy barrage of cyber attacks right now attempts to hack into the Bank operating systems way beyond just trying to take over an individual account at the Bank. But in fact to disable their computer systems at the Bank. Nobody's saying, but you can just assume that it's a state actor who we try to completely disable the computer opera. Fficials maybe even to white the data clean. On all account holders. These warnings coming from listen to this office. There is in the federal government. I saw this in a Wall Street Journal dispatch about this. There's an office of critical infrastructure, protection and compliance policy. The treasury department. That's a mouthful, isn't it. It's very very freaked out. About what's going on right now? Certainly assume it's the Russians or another foreign power trying to mess with us. Russians. It's always the first suspect because the evil Putin and charge, but anyway, and the past things the Russians have been up to I don't understand Americans who don't. Get how rotten terrible the Russians are under Putin. But anyway. Digress. So think of two things one. If a banks database gets completely wiped out. It is. Longterm? No, real problem short-term, their potential hassles. So let's see a long term one of the things that has been implemented. I don't remember how many years ago this was. Banks and credit unions work under a buddy system where they all have. Nobody really talks about this because it's doomed doomsday scenario kind of stuff. But there is a companion Bank. A competitor that has a database backup. That's never more than twenty four hours old from their competitor. And in the event something happens where a foreign actors able to completely disable the computer operations at a Bank or credit union. People will still be able to use their accounts. With the other financial institution acting as host. And for you and me after cut over it should be somewhat pretty much business as usual, I guess records would be there'd be a twenty four hour window of missing data, potentially. So which again is not normally the end of the world, but two things come to mind with this. If we were to receive a serious attack from the Russians, the Chinese another foreign actor Iran, look at our list of potential enemies would do this. It'd be North Korea. We got a lot of potential suspects. One a lot of people never have any cash anymore. For very short window would become valuable having a small amount of cash available stored in a place in your home small. I mean for a lot of people just for walking around money under one hundred dollars. Let's say. Having that available, particularly if you're somebody who never carries any cash at all, you should have it when I travel I travel roughly thirty weeks a year. I carry even though I never use it. I have a supply of cash with me, not a huge amount. But I have some cash ever. I had a serious problem where I could not access accounts. I still have some cash to function with the second thing is. And this is all boy scout stuff, right? Be prepared. And let's go on the assumption. That nothing terrible. It's going to happen. Even if it does everything will be okay after a little while. Because the redundant systems have been put into place. So the other thing is if you have turned off paper statements from a Bank or brokerage. And you are receiving electric ones. You need to print those out or store them. In your own backup hard drive or in the cloud. Although that wouldn't be as good as in your own hard drive. You need to have some kind of record. That if a Bank database ever got white clean, you have documentation at least going back to the last statement showing what you had. Again, that's doomsday kind of stuff. But I want you to be prepared for me. Everybody I do business with wants me to go to electric statements. And I know this sounds so antiquated in so dated. But I'm thinking analog if everything goes wrong, I still have my paper statements. Roberts with us on the car coward show. Robert, I'm really proud of you. You're really thinking something through to make sure nobody takes advantage of you hit me with it. I don't need another one. More my daughter used in college. So. The two thousand fourteen model. Check it out on on on some of these sites. The price range. It online and I got a call from a broker and I took his number. Offer and just to do that on a call from a local dealership said they wanted to put a hold on their Chevrolet laws. So I I did go by there after a while let them give me a price and it was lower. About what bought it would be. And I got a call. Then I got a call from another company. A name with a broker or what? But they've given me a price offer that is acceptable close to mine. Thinking of. And they would they we'd have arranged for them to pick it up. They wanna give me a Wells Fargo of certified cashiers jet. Now, how do you know, these these people are the real people in our legitimate dealer? Like, they contacted you. You didn't contact them. Tell me what procedure you've been through after they contacted you onto their website. I logged in tried to go to the website. Secede. As alias I've seen their advertising, I believe paid attention to. All right. Well, now, I'm intrigued name who you were talking about then, please. Vanna carbonneau. Oh carven. Yeah. I've talked about carbon. An increasingly popular way people are buying used cars. So this is something that is still hard for me to wrap my arms around, but people buy a car from Carbonneau on their phone sight, unseen and just buy a vehicle, and then they have time if they don't like it take it back and get a refined. Sakari Vanna light carmax loves to buy cars direct from a private seller selling them because it cuts out some markups. And the process if they can buy from you directly. What did they have you do once you registered at their website? Lavigne number early on. We talked about some of the details. And after they made it all for love is my driver's license in Paul. Go back and then. Did they want pictures of the car uploaded? I had several of them on the side. Very good. The quality of Agila ship. All right. So they sight unseen. They're going to buy your car, and they gave you the price. And they give you this. Wells Fargo cashiers chat. Have you have you? Dr. And they said well, thank you be cashier's check. That means that already got the money for that shit. The town or whatever. But I think they're going to write the check on site. Now questioning I think. That's not. I mean, if they're gonna if carbon is going to write your check. It's like what carmax does where they write you a Bank check on site. That's not a cashier's. Check. Well, that's a cashier's. Check is this you'd by the Bank itself. So have you called carbonic just out of the blue and said, hey, do you buy cars from people, and how does it work, and how do you do it? And if you looked at the process on carbon dot com, just to make sure everything you're doing mashes up with how carbon really does business, and this is no imposter is trying to buy from you. I would do that just as much as you can reach a level of comfort that you're really dealing with them. Not just some tow truck is gonna show up. Check and go off with your car. I don't know if I could get it takes guys driver's license, tag and run is that a meeting about Las Palmas. I didn't know what it was. You're meeting. I'm at a Wells Fargo branch. Let me tell me tell you what I'd like to do. You know, I I'm very familiar with carbon. I just wanna make sure before you turn over your car. And you got a cashier's check that everything you've told us really is their method of operation. And so we're gonna put it on a call with them. And we'll let you know. Okay. So hang on just second. So we can reach you later. Wow. That is quite a puzzle. David's with us on the Clark Howard show. Hi, David all my God is the king of savings. Hey, how's it going? Great. Thank you. Let's see if I really prove myself to be that. Yeah. Thanks to cheapskate university. I've heard all about you. And I feel happy to talk to you. Well, thank you. IBM service and show that I deserve to wear the crown of king of cheap. Well, my wife, and I want to take the trip the mardi gras. We've never been to New Orleans. She's never been east of Utah. And we're trying to we're trying to go there during that time during the parade and all that we don't need to be there for the whole weeks of the events. Just at least maybe the end 'cause I hear that Tuesday's the big day or something. So I don't you're the man when it comes to the flights hotels where you know, with, you know, getting a Roach motel, but at the same time, you know, travel spots there, I need help. Yeah. And you probably have seen prices that are just mind blowing. Oh, yeah. Well, yeah. But we've looked them up now. And I'm sure like you said earlier, you get them the better, they are actually. No, actually the later. The better you're gonna do. Because with special event anytime you're going to a special event, the prices are extremely high especially on accommodations early. And only later when people see smaller number of bookings, they expect the start to see the prices drop. And so this is true for any special event the Super Bowl and Olympics mardi gras every year and with mardi gras. There are a lot of people who rent out a room or apartment or whatever on Airbnb. Have you been looking at Airbnb at all? No, I hadn't heard you talk about it. But obviously, it's something I can go online and check them out. And if the air fares are out of sight, then one thing I can recommend to you. As look at fairs from Salt Lake to Baton Rouge instead of New Orleans get airfares, potentially div Alexi Mississippi instead of to New Orleans. Would it be better? And obviously correct me if I'm wrong, would it be better from if I can say the city, I believe in from. Yeah. Go ahead. Oh, San Diego airport. Oh, why did I think you said you toss? I assume Salt Lake I'm sorry. We're we're driving down there. Dropping the kids off of the grandparents and then leading for the weekend. Okay. So leaving them in San Diego gives you the big option of not only checking fares from San Diego to three destinations Alexi Baton Rouge, New Orleans. But it also gives you the option of checking fares out of Orange County. And if you don't mind the commute up to LAX. To see what might be available. And if you book the airfare into New Orleans.

"Place in your home small. I mean for a lot of people just for walking around money under one hundred dollars. Let's say having that available, particularly if you're somebody who never carries any cash at all you should have it when I travel I travel roughly thirty weeks a year. I carry even though I never use it. I have a supply of cash with me, not a huge amount. But I have some cash that if ever I had a serious problem where I could not access accounts. I still have some cash to function with the second thing is. And this is all boy scout stuff, right? Be prepared. And let's go on the assumption. That nothing terrible is going to happen. Even if it does everything will be okay after a little while. Because of the redundant systems have been put into place. So the other thing is if you have turned off paper statements from a Bank or brokerage. And you are receiving electric ones. You need to print those out or store them. In your own backup hard-drive or in the cloud. Although that wouldn't be as good as in your own hard drive. You need to have some kind of record. That if a Bank database ever got white clean, you have documentation at least going back to the last statement showing what you had. Again, that's doomsday kinda stuff. "My pleasure to have you with us here on the Clark Howard show, where it's about you learning ways to keep more of what you make you may. Or may not have heard the news reports that a number of the nation's largest banks are facing a very heavy barrage of cyber attacks right now attempts to hack into the Bank operating systems way beyond just trying to take over an individual account at the Bank. But in fact to disable the computer systems at the Bank. Nobody's saying, but you can just assume that it's a state actor who we try to completely disable the computer operation at a Bank. Even according to federal officials, maybe even to wipe the data clean on all account holders. These warnings coming from listen to this office. There is in the federal government. I saw this in a Wall Street Journal dispatch about this. There's an office of critical infrastructure, protection and compliance policy. At the treasury department. That's a mouthful, isn't it. That's very very freaked out. About what's going on right now? We'll certainly assume it's the Russians or another foreign power trying to mess with us. Russians, always the first suspect because the evil Putin in charge. But anyway, and the past things the Russians have been up to I don't understand Americans who don't. Get how rotten terrible the Russians are under Putin. But anyway. I digress. So think of two things one. If a banks database gets completely wiped out, it is long-term, no real problem short-term, their potential hassles. So let's see it long term one of the things that has been implemented. I don't remember how many years ago this was. Banks and credit unions work under a buddy system where they all have. And nobody really talks about this. This is doomed to doomsday scenario kind of stuff. But there is a companion Bank a competitor that has a database backup. That's never more than twenty four hours old from their competitor. And in the event that something happens where a foreign actors able to completely disable the computer operations at a Bank or credit union. People will still be able to use their accounts with the other financial institution acting as host. And for you and me after a cut over it should be somewhat pretty much business as usual, I guess records would be there'd be a twenty four hour window of missing data, potentially. So which again is not normally the end of the world, but two things come to mind with us. If we were to receive a serious attack from the Russians, the Chinese another foreign actor Iran, look at our list of potential enemies would do this. It'd be North Korea. We got a lot of potential suspects. One of people never have any cash anymore. Cash for a very short window would become valuable having a small amount of cash available stored in a place in your home small. I mean for a lot of people just for walking around money under one hundred dollars. Let's say having that available, particularly if you're somebody never carries any cash at all you should have it when I travel I travel roughly thirty weeks a year. I carry even though I never use it. I have a supply of cash with me, not a huge amount. But I have some cash that if ever I had a serious problem where I could not access accounts. Again, that's doomsday kind of stuff. But I want you to be prepared for me. Everybody I do business with wants me to go till electric statements. And I know this sounds so antiquated so dated. But I'm thinking analog if everything goes wrong, I still have my paper statements. Roberts with us on the car coward show. Robert, I'm really proud of you. You're really thinking something through to make sure nobody takes advantage of you hit me with it. I don't need another one. More my daughter used in college. So it's a two thousand fourteen model, and I checked it out on on on some of these sites the price range listed online. And I got a call from a broker and I took his number. Offer. And just a just that on. I got a call from the local dealership said they wanted to put up afford on their Chevrolet law. So I I did go by there after a while lesson gives you a price, and it was the lowest about father was the and I got a call. Then I got a call from another company in the name. Name with a broker or what? But they've given me a price offer that is acceptable close to my. I was thinking of. And they would they we'd have arranged for them to pick it up, and they wanna give me Wells Fargo certified cashier's check. Now, how do you know, these that these people are the real people in our legitimate dealer? Like, they contacted you. You didn't contact them. Tell me what procedure you've been through after they contacted you to their website. I logged in I tried to go to other websites seceded alias I've seen their advertising I believe, but I never really paid attention to. All right. Well, now, I'm intrigued name who you were talking about then, please. Vanna carbonneau. Oh carven. Yeah. I've talked about carbon. They are an increasingly popular way people are buying used cars. So this is something that is still hard for me to wrap my arms around, but people buy a car from Carbonneau on their phone sight, unseen and just buy a vehicle, and then they have time if they don't like it take it back and get a refund Sakari Vanna like carmax loves to buy cars direct from a private seller selling them because it cuts out some markups. And the process if they can buy from you directly. What did they have you do once you registered at their website? Have. Vin the VIN number early on. And we talked about some of the details. And after they made an offer load is my driver's license in. Title back and then. Did they want pictures of the car uploaded? And no I had several of them on the site. Good pitcher. The quality of a deal. All right. So they sight unseen. They're going to buy your car, and they gave you the price. And they give you this. Wells Fargo cashier's check. Yes. If you have you grad. As far as I said. Well, if they give you cash that means they got the money for that. Check. In the county. But I think they're going to write the check on site now questioning. I think that's not. I mean, if they're gonna if carbon is going to write your check, it's like what carmax does with a right. You're a Bank check on site. That's not a cashier's. Check. Cheers check is issued by the Bank itself. So have you called carbonic just out of the blue and said, hey, do you buy cars from people, and how does it work, and how do you do it? And if you looked at the process on carbon dot com, just to make sure everything you're doing meshes with how carbon really does business, and this is no imposter is trying to buy from you. No. I haven't called them. I would do that just as much as you can reach a level of comfort that you're really dealing with them. Not just some tow truck is going gonna show up anywhere. Check and go off with your car. I didn't know if I should get a picture of the guys driver's license tag. And runners that a meeting about a Welsh farmers. I do. I didn't know what I was going to your meeting. I'm at a Wells Fargo branch. Let me tell me tell you what I'd like to do. You know, I I'm very familiar with carbon. I just wanna make sure before you turn over your car. And you got a cashier's check that everything you've told us really is their method of operation. And so we're going to put it on a call with them. And we'll let you know. Okay. That'd be great. So hang on just a second. So we can reach you later. Wow. That is quite a puzzle. David's with us on the Clark Howard show. Hi, david. Oh, my God is the king of savings. Hey, how's it going? Great. Thank you. Let's see if I really prove myself to be that. Yeah. Thanks to cheapskate university. I've heard all about you. And I I'm happy to talk to you. Well, thank you. How can I be of service and show that I deserve to wear the crown of king of cheap. Well, my wife, and I want to take the trip the mardi gras. We've never been to New Orleans. She's never been east of Utah. And we're trying to we're trying to go there during that time during this parade and all that we don't need to be there for the whole weeks of the events. Just at least maybe the end 'cause I hear that Tuesday's the big day or something. So I don't you're the man when it comes to the flights to hotels, where it's you know, it's not getting a Roach motel. But at the same time, you know travel spots there, I need help. And and you probably have seen prices that are just mindblowing. Oh, yeah. Well, yeah. But we've looked them up now. And I'm sure like you said earlier, you get them the better, they are actually. No, oh, actually the later. The better you're gonna do. Because with a special event anytime you're going to a special event, the prices are extremely high especially on accommodations early.
