"To witness history on the BBC World Service with me, Claire bows and now a program from our archives. It was on the ninth of July 1985 that the Greenpeace campaign ship, the Rainbow Warrior was bombed by French secret agents in Auckland. New Zealand. One crew member was killed and the old North Sea trawler, which had found a new life as a vehicle for environmentalists was sunk. The Rainbow Warrior had sailed to Canada to stop seal culls and harassed the whaling fleets of Russia and Japan. She and her crew were in New Zealand as part of a campaign against French nuclear testing in Polynesia. Her captain Pete Willcox spoke to me in 2010. We had just come from the Marshall Islands where we had relocated an entire village. From an atoll that had been nuked by the U. S nuclear testing program in the fifties. Because that year 1985 that was a year of protesting nuclear testing in the Pacific. Her feeling was if it was safe. Do it in Paris if it was safe, do it in Washington, D C. But don't turn smaller Third World countries into your testing zone. The crew sailed into Auckland, New Zealand to prepare for the next leg of the journey. Spirits were high. They just celebrated campaign manager Steve Sawyer's birthday and the young crew were excited about their first trip to the South Pacific. I remember going to bed at about 10, 30, 11 o'clock and at quarter of 12. I felt the boat shake violently and my first inclination was that B been in a collision at sea. So I immediately rolled over and looked at my forward porthole and saw that we were tied to Marston. Worf and I laid back down thinking Well, whatever happened, It can't be my fault because we're tied to the dock and I was relieved to see that we were safe at sure so to speak. And when I laid back down, I realized that the sounds normally that I heard on the ship and that is the generator running in the background weren't weren't on So I thought something had happened in the engine room. And normally Davey Edward would be right down there and taking care of it, And you wouldn't wouldn't need any help for me at all. But things didn't sound right outside. So I started to get up. And the first thing I noticed was my glasses that had hung on a shelf for the preceding four years in all kinds of weather, weren't there. So I grabbed a towel off the wall and walked the 8 to 10 M down the hallway to the engine room door to find Davies standing there. In a state of disbelief going Well, it's over. She's finished. She's done for And I thought, Well, come on, What are you talking about? And I looked down and the water was just a meter below the deck level that we were standing at. Absolutely couldn't think any reason for that. I just thought, well, somebody's left to tap running. We'll figure this out. So I started walking back after because I realized that if the water was so close to the main deck level than the after accommodations would be underwater, which, in fact they were and I got to the stairs. I looked down and the martini The first mate was down there. And he had already gotten everybody up, and that's when the second bomb went off. It went off right underneath us that had been placed on the propeller, and that's when I became alarmed. That's what I thought. There's really something bad going on, and that's when I started calling out Abandon ship. Pete scrambled back to his cabin to find some clothes and as he did so the boat started to list. It was sinking rapidly, so he and Davey Ed with the chief engineer, joined the others on the dock, and that's when they realized that photographer Fernando Pereira was missing. While we were standing on the dock, David told me Fernando was down in the boat. And Didn't think there was any way possible. I was going to be able to swim down through the diesel oil and down two decks to get him and find him without becoming trapped myself. So as soon as the police arrived, we said, we're missing this crew member. We think he's still in there. They took us all across the street and an hour later came with a dive team and it took a second dive team. The first dive team couldn't get down to him. The Navy divers did. But that wasn't for maybe three hours after the boat was was down, they found Fernando's body in his cabin. He'd become trapped the door slamming shut after the second bomb exploded. But despite this tragedy, suspicion fell on the rainbow warriors themselves. I was taken by the police up to the police station and just kept there at eight o'clock. The next morning, they took me down to the harbor Master's office. And wanted me to sign a note saying I'd be responsible for removing the wreckage from on Harvard. Because at this point I think the police were were still suspicious that it was something we had done on ourselves for publicity. I mean, there. They were very skeptical about everything that was going on. They took me back down to the boat. And it was that morning at about 10 o'clock that the Navy divers going down for a second or third time had found the whole And told the police that absolutely the bomb had been on the outside of the ship and all the jagged metal edges were going in. And I think when that happened, there became a real attitude change with the New Zealand police who realized that It hadn't been us. It really was. Somebody else had put bombs on the boat and Created what became the only the second act of political terrorism in New Zealand history. They were they were angry. They were really angry. This sort of thing just didn't go on in New Zealand. We now have a homicide. We have a major criminal act. We have the implication of political or terrorists over time. And we have therefore as a country an urgent need to investigate it and the police force of New Zealand doing so. Efficiently and they will be given every resource that they need to do that. The prime minister of New.

"The envy of the world really right now. And it has a lot this that eco-system has a lot of moving parts to it. And it concerns me because I mean when you look at the number of people who now will go out of paycheck tomorrow, you know, it becomes quite serious in your letter to the president you wrote that the government shutdown his quote adverse. Effecting, the safety security and efficiency of our national airspace system. Right. I mean, do you really believe right now, travelers are less safe? No not right now. Because let let me let me put it this way, you know, just take the shutdown aside for moment pilots constantly make decisions on whether or not an are. You know, take an aircraft into the sky or going into a mission or looking at anything is a it. Whether it's safe or not we're basically risk when it comes to stuff like that. And the same thing for the air traffic controllers, but it is difficult to judge if something like this prolonged as to what effect it might have on the system. Can you break down force? What happens in a government shutdown four, you know, four employees that you represent for for air traffic controllers for for people because I mean, obviously, we've been reporting on TSA personnel. You know, calling in sick looking reading totally right in some cases, look for other jobs air, traffic control, certainly a huge example. Now, it is. And you know, and that's and I think that that is really the sad part is really what's at stake here from labor, you know. And I am the labour leader, obviously, as well is, you know, the the the impact it has on the on the likelihood of these individuals and the stresses that they're under now. So it doesn't surprise me that after coming to work with, you know, not being paid and the long hours that they're facing right now, you know, that's the impact. So there's impact you know, has a bad impact on them and their lives. It has a bad impact on the safety of security like I mentioned and also on on the future of their profession because it probably will affect people's willingness to step into a profession like that. And and possibly, you know, experienced the same thing, it's also hard to calculate the impact, you know, just the anxiety the concern about, you know, making payments on your house about sending your kids to daycare all all the the the you know the day to day financial decisions somebody has to make. When all of that is up in the air. You know, we're all distracted. You're actually, right. And you know here at the airline Pilots Association. You know, we have programs to to help our members to it and the impact on the aviation. Economy's going to be great. And what worries me is the impact on safety. And you know, Anderson pilots do their jobs every day. And so two controllers what we're asking. And the reason I said that led it to the president of the United States and also to congress is to make them or ask them to do their jobs. It's just a shame because we again, we are the envy of the world in terms of the efficiency of and safety of our our aviation system. We have moved two thirds of the world's population. When you think about it, and, you know, America, listen, very closely here because this is really important safely to their destination without any fatalities since two thousand nine so, and and when you consider that we're putting people in metal tubes in the lower stratosphere. That's an. Mbia bowl record. And we do that through an very aggressive. We used to take forensic approach towards determine, you know, trying to figure out what went wrong and fight or anything like that. Now, it's a risk predictive model, and so now it's even more important to have everybody at their station with the resources they need to do that mission. Captain pete. Appreciate your time tonight. Thank you. Thank you wanna know, we reach out to the FAA about the concerns raised over air safety, and they said in part, the traveling public can be assured that our nation's airspace system is safe or traffic controllers and technicians who maintain the nation's airspace system continue to work without pay to fill a critical mission to ensure the public safety. They add we sincerely thank FA employees who are working to keep the traveling public or skies safe. Very busy night when we come back..

"The Wolsey fire, and we're just learning all these great stories, and we wanted to bring them on because we're going to finish the year with a very strong uplifting. Inspirational story. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you gentlemen for being with us here. This is another one of many examples of the hard work that you do. I know Chris you've been with the department what over eighteen years and Pete you're twenty six years give him and you said, this is the first time you see something. So insane the intensity the way these fires are acting and laying down and taking all these homes. We saw what happened what happened in northern California. And here it's a really Merkel that you both were able to help this seventy year old woman was trapped inside her home. So walk us through again, Pete when you're driving up the drive again, you said the home is like pretty far out from PCH, and it's dark. Yeah. It was up there. And that was the thing that was strange. It was the only got to a point where we were. You know, we get your point fairly quickly when there's a lot of smoke and fire in the wires everything. And we're looking at the GPS map picking man, we have we have still pretty good ways to go. So the conditions are like this here. You know, you can imagine what they're like they're. And again, Chris said, luckily, we were paired up and Christmas driving. I was using the map just to follow the little blue dot down the street. So we kind of knew where to go. And once we got up there the conditions began where exactly as Chris would stay they stayed that way all the way out. But I thought it was strange when we got close to the bend in the road where where the address was it kinda cleared for just a second Ray where we were and there's address on this mailbox as I call stop here for you know, we're here we're here. So literally jumped out right, right? You remember we were this wasn't just a one shot deal. We we had to take three or four shots this before we ever able to make it up and and talked about two different access points to get this house. And literally we we've tried both. And I remember sitting we're we're making our way up the hill. And there was a gentleman walking down the hill. And we'd asked stopped to ask him. If your particular street was in, you know, his response. Was us was the entire areas on fire anyone up there is it alive? So just to kind of set the table with these people are seen as they're coming down the hill, and we're trying to go up. And then again, we several times we had to stop because we could we could not see five feet in front of us and you to drive over power lines, which is incredibly dangerous. I mean, you're really risking your own lives. And so this is a seventy year old woman that's trapped inside her home in Malibu has medical issues. Does not walk. Well, how did you find her? Where was she? Yeah. We pulled out there. And and I grabbed a radio and said, hey, I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go run back there. Chris said, okay. You know, get Chuck turnaround because you know, we we'd like to get out of here as quick as possible. Yeah. So I went walking down or kind of half jog run down this long driveway. And you know, again, everything's on fire. There's kind of a big berm to my right with a Connex box burning and truck burning and so go running down, and I just started yelling out, and you know, there were trees down over the driveway and wires. It was the same thing. What are you yelling? You don't know her name or do, you know, I was just yelling, you know. Hello fire department. You is anybody here, and I got about halfway down the driveway. And all of a sudden, I heard somebody scream yell out. She's screaming Jesus. You know, yelling. I'm here. I'm here. You know, don't leave me. And so I said no keep keeping keep yelling. I'm coming. Because you know, I still couldn't really tell where it was coming from because it was kind kinda hilly up there and. Kept yelling. And and I came around this corner the driveway goes right into where there drives boy there with the garage was can I get into the house. I came around this corner. And Casey was in this courtyard had a garden hose in her hand, and she was kind of leaning against a wall. House is on fire and. I can't really. The best way for me to describe this. I mean, I talked to her is if you know, you thought you were going to die. And then whatever circumstances changed that. That's the reaction. What it's hard to describe exactly what it was. But I could tell that. She probably was thinking this was her. You know last day or she was definitely in a lot of danger. And then she was nice showed up. So you are honestly I mean Pete and Chris you were her guardian angels. I'm not trying to be like a sensationalist. Oh, but it's almost bringing me tears. I think about this. Because I said I've been out there with you guys. And when that kind of situation where you have fire all around at home. I mean, just the debris in the air and the smoke this one didn't have a mask on goggles on. I can barely see when I'm reporting and I'm far away from the fire. I can't imagine being right in it without any of that equipment on. Yeah. Going on. And you know, I was able to get on the radio pretty quick let Chris know where I was. And and then he came back, and you know, we we got her later we out of there up and. Carrier, right. Yeah. Well her and I started moving towards the vehicle, and obviously it became obvious to me that she didn't walk very well. And I said we've got to keep moving forward. Okay. We got we leave. And you know, I didn't I hadn't even said anything else to Chris other than letting them know on the radio that I found her that all of a sudden you showed up we came around the corner, and he shows up and it was like oh perfect. So let's go, and we both got on either side of a picture up which was which really helped because there was like I said they were treating wires over the driveway. So it was kind of a pen over down and under go, so literally put her in the front seat with you. You're all just kind of bunched in there, and what's going through her mind. Boy, you know, I'm sure she's just it's surreal and even for both of you. I mean, what are you thinking like, let's hope that we actually get out of here alive with her, right? Yeah. I think once we had her in the truck, obviously, we were very relieved and. And again, the backup. I and you talked about her being lucky I think like pizza with with the smoke clearance. Just the way it set up. Yeah. I will I will say there's some divine intervention there. Because you know, we couldn't see anything in front of us. But once we got her into the truck, we started making our way down then I had to look at Pete. We kind of had to go back into a different mode of okay, we've got to get ourselves out in down the hill. And again, it was we were very lucky to be paired up that day together. And we we worked as a team. Like, I said p kept looking at GPS telling me what was coming up next. And then we have had both of our eyes on that windshield. Just looking for for wires or anything that was down the road. You don't have a woman a faith. And I I agree with you. I think that was there was a lot of divine intervention. But you also do an incredible job. You used your training, and you used your courage, and I think that's the biggest thing. And I know that you're gonna have to probably by Baskin Robbins stores, you mentioned on tape here because of the guys in the fire department, the culture is you know, if you're on TV or any kind of publicity like you have to buy ice cream. It's very cute. So you might have to do that after this. But, you know, something you deserve all the accolades and truthfully, captain, Pete Finnerty, and captain Chris Isaak. I mean that was impressive that was really really excellent work. And I think I can say this because as someone who actually, you know, reports on fires in his actually there. It's a whole different experience. You know? And I and I really every time I leave a fire. I have such renewed appreciation for the work that you do. I know we kinda tease you guys for being all cute and hot, and like, you know, having the gym at the office and always working out. But when you work man, you guys work, and it's really hard work. So thank you. Thank you so much for what you do. I hope you've been incredible twenty. Nineteen happy new year to you and your loved ones. Okay. Thank you very much and happy new year to you. Thank you. Appreciate everything you do. All right, guys. Take care with a great story. Guys are amazing Sunday morning with Elizabeth Espinosa KFI AM six forty into the newsroom. "Of it's pretty emotional. But the traffic would actually stopped on the streets. All the car is often. I never went out there waving at us. A wild time Christmas Eve. After the celebrations came recriminations. Naval commanders didn't want to take the rap even though they sent the Pueblo ill equipped and ill prepared on the riskiest of Michigan's captain Pete Bucher was accused of surrendering without a fight. But blaming the captain outraged crew members, right? Pat's husband Jim Cal. He never really give up the ship. There's just no way we can stop them from boarding. We didn't have the weapons were totally outnumbered. Virtually no armament to fight back. And there's no way we're going to get away feed to get going every one of us should have been killed. They wanted to court martial Bucher right off the bat for giving up without a fight. And from what I understand one of the admirals at the court of inquiry made the comment if you'd only fired one shot Andrew blurred, y'all be heroes. Quite a bit of blood shed on our side. Portent for people to know. Because of what we went through. I don't want it to be for nothing. I want them to know what heroes. These men were. They do not considered this heroes. They do not. He said we were just doing our job. But he has never been the same. Neither of us had been the same. When you've gone through that. You look different. You heal different you act different. And you always always had PTSD. Today fifty years on former members of the crew in their families still do their best to keep the memory of the Pueblo alive. And so two in a very different spirit to their former tormentors grab is.

"Bring a one of my buddies up L right now. All right. I went up is p p. Pete is a major in. The army Pete is a professor at West Point. And Pete was a starter. In fact, Pete is the record holder for most starts all time in army history. Former captain Pete welcome back it just broken tomorrow. Yes. You walk. It will be broken tomorrow by any Brinson. Yes. Who has three nine six GPA and chemical engineering at West Point. So so now, but now that you're a professor there. Do you take pride in like one of your students is going to break your record? Well, if I taught that kid out probably be like kowtow to because you know, way more than I do. But no, I pretty proud of him for a guy like that to be able to break, the record is pretty awesome. And it's great to be back on zero block. Yeah. Thank you for coming. And what was you know? I talked a little bit about what it was like for me. You certainly played a lot more than I did. With all those starts. I'm not embarrassed to admit it at this point. But what what was it like for you to play in the army navy game? Army navy was always really special because it could really make or break your season. Right. If you were having a poor season, but you could beat navy or vice versa. If you're Evan. Great season. You lost arm. You really make or break your season. So it's kind of like that one chance to really make your Mark. Yeah. And I've always said to. I think what makes army navy special is that even if you did not go to army or navy just about everybody has some sort of connection to the army or the navy, and you can find a side to root for. So certainly makes it special regard. I think what you're saying is true for like the more known Connor. I really believe that you guys could go, oh and ten and you beat navy and it's accessible year. I think when people like Alabama and Auburn say, oh, Alabama says we can go as long as we be. That's not true Nick saves getting fired. If you go into you guys legitimately be stoked just the beat navy. That's true. That's true. I mean, I mean if you can't go and ten too many years in a row still everybody be happy while you go one in ten. There you go one and ten it's got me. Beat navy is plastered everywhere. All over Oliver West Point and beat is vice versa at Annapolis. And so it really is a rivalry to where. Your passion is to really be with you could just have one game a year and then just play the army navy game. Instead of you know, what the other eleven games will pass. Right. But we get a play navy. But that sounds good. And I mean, you you talking about rivalries, and and we're talking about this streak that army broke a few years ago in for so many years we were the underdog in the game. And now, we've kind of flip the script, and we're the wolves going out there, that's relaxed. But how how do you feel about the game game tomorrow? Now that we're favored for the first time since two thousand one and this is killing me because I don't normally let him go this far about West Point stuff. I usually cut him off way before I'm trying to be the bigger person today because we're in town for them..

He's not gonna cabin. He's in the water. Go. Captain Pete Patterson hoped that by detain the prisoners and treating them. Well, it would lead to better relations. I mean, so stupid. We are. It's so dumb. We'll take the prisoner. And then we'll treat them. Crazy enough to. After some time. He sent the wounded woman home he did this after the baby died. Well, that's cool. Another woman delivered a baby boy, which then also died a media Louis. None of this was obviously going to have a great effect on the whole better relations thing by keeping them prisoner plane. Not going grant. Hopefully, the crippled. God's swam. High tech back later, I feel like. So after this the aboriginals attacked a nearby farm and killed the settler and his son that's tip for tat. Yes. Another party of soldiers was then sent out but the aboriginals kept their distance. Soldiers were now distributed throughout the settlement. And this would be permanence and other soldiers all the settlement, we missed you. Far away you were with the baby died. He got genuinely sad because of you. Also, you guys them outside.
