Trump hosts heated White House vaping debate

"On Wednesday ten candidates faced off in Atlanta for a democratic presidential debate no one candidate broke out of the pack reflecting his surge in the polls people to judge came under fire for his political and experience while calmly Heris tried to regain momentum meanwhile on Capitol Hill house Democrats heard from nine witnesses this week and they're impeachment investigation of president trump ambassador Gordon Tomlin and former White House adviser Fiona hill were among those who testified someone said there was in fact a quid pro quo for the release of military aid to Ukraine while Fiona hell characterize the pressure campaign as a quote domestic political errands with us now is Joe carefully senior political writer for the San Francisco Chronicle and founder and president of she the people Amy Allison thanks for being with us Joe let's start with you much has been made of south bend Indiana mayor Pete booted Chad and his recent rise in the polls particularly in Iowa and New Hampshire what was his goal on Wednesday night and do you think he achieved it was gold what was it for in it not to be a a peek down like everybody just the young people who just because he's the the poll leader he's got bigger problems he is the head in that state that's ninety percent white which is you know that's that's nice but when it comes to California the stats here say that you know half of Latinos don't even know who he is so he's got some real problems and when he goes to South Carolina and he's been a long time there no black folks there are not into his campaign at all it is it's really amazing about people the church is that there is no path to victory in the primary without winning significant black support to go around black women he's as close to zero as they come and so I thought last night or late this week was his opportunity to make his case an authentic way to really appeal to black voters particular black women who are the power house Democratic Party voters and he was challenged on his racial justice record in south bend and I feel like he fell flat and so he didn't gain momentum there and therefore I I think as it relates to black voters would you put a judge did not to gain and he says I I asked in this of the California Democratic Party convention were at those at last week about this and he said no I'm I'm looking for to making out reaches into the communities and then Latinos and blacks but he didn't show up to the to the like the to the African American caucus of the California Democratic Party convention so you know there's a gap right now between the rhetoric and the reality for him come here she called him out on that on the stage in Amy you were actually at the debate I was right there and I what was the mood like there it's interesting because of the tight it's Tyler Perry studios it said Lana this is a state that was electrified and literally transformed by the campaign is Stacey Abrams who did that the pre show rally you don't it was the moment where I was sitting among people it was very clear when we heard from the mayor of Atlanta is Stacey Abrams a congressman Lewis as well as Tom for as the Georgia is the middle of the middle of the battleground states there one point four points from being a blue state and they recognize that not only do they have to deal with voter suppression and we didn't hear enough about that on stage about the reality voter suppression in a state like Georgia but they they need to invest now in order to elevate turn out even more than we saw record numbers for twenty eighteen so there was a sense of people in the audience they're really looking for signals from the the candidates who was who is able to speak the language of a multiracial coalition they can be a man or woman of any race but are they going to appeal to people like in Georgia and some did did a very good job on that and others fell on their face and so that was a good measure of who's going to be positioned to reassemble the Obama coalition into twenty twenty one of the most striking things for me in this debate was that this was the first debate were all for moderators were women Amy and you can answer this also if you'd like to do you think that that that affected the tenor of the debate and what was talked about I actually thought it was good I I in the in the sense that child care was brought up that's a universal fit you know our concern of parents in terms of being a burden and there's not a lot really but national solution to this so we have we're able to really hear from the candidates much more deeply around an issue that affects a lot of us and I think having women on the stage did make a difference in that way I think the issue of abortion in in choice was addressed more than before but again there are there were many many more issues or round they talked about workplace harassment in the need to movement and right that was really funny talk about housing to which hasn't gotten a lot of play so far too which is which is another issue that we yeah we have but for five debates since the first time I've really have discussion about housing is interesting because if you look at women in particular women of color are going to be the that the swing vote in these battleground states for the white and battle the White House they're also going to be the vote that ultimately decides who is a standard bearer for the Democratic Party these issues matter and she the people just worked with us center for American progress on a report that basically said look if you talk issues with the good witch and issues that speak to the base like some of the issues were talking about those are things that excite people and get them to the polls this is this is what needs to happen more and more these debates are coming up well California senator Kamel Harris she came out swinging at this debate she's trying to revitalize her campaign and there was one particularly testy exchange between her and congressman Tulsi Gabbard let's listen to that it's unfortunate that we have someone on the stage who is attempting to be the democratic nominee for president United States during the Obama administration spent four years full time on foxnews criticizing president Obama

Why The Times Published a Photo of Drowned Migrants

"The migrant crisis on the US Mexico border continues to confront political leaders, from the White House to congress to the debate stage. The latest development reports of horrific conditions for children at detention centers in that photo of migrant father Oscar Martinez Ramirez and his young daughter Valeria, who drowned in the Rio Grande that photo helped spark action under this week on Capitol Hill. House speaker Nancy Pelosi fought with Republicans and members of our own caucus to add language to an emergency aid Bill, that would further hold the Trump administration accountable, but on Thursday, the speaker said, House Democrats would reluctantly pass the Senate Bill, which included one billion from border facilities, and close to three billion for migrant children. It passed three hundred five votes to one hundred and two votes. Joining me tonight, Dan ball. Chief correspondent for the Washington Post Susan page Washington bureau chief for USA today, coral Hulse chief Washington correspondent for the New York Times, and author of confirmation bias and Kimberly. Atkins, senior Washington news correspondent for WB. You are Boston's NPR news station. Susan, you're writing a biography of speaker Pelosi, she moved forward on a Bill. She didn't wanna pass why. Because it was better than nothing that getting the four point five billion that would that would go along way to helping this terrible situation with migrant children, who have been separated from their parents was worth the cost of taking a Bill, that had been negotiated on the Senate side and was opposed by some members of congress. This was this was a vote that she she worked. She has a divided caucus on this issue. But I think that portray this as a big loss for her is. Incorrect. She held control over caucus. She got it through because she thought it was better than the alternative of letting go down. What's the price she pays Carl with liberals who are frustrated that they took up a Bill passed by Senate? There's a little cost to this. But a few things went on there. I totally agree one hundred percent with you. This is what happens in divided government at some point, you have to make a deal. This was a Bill negotiated in the Senate between Democrats and Republicans. This was the and what it allowed them to do. I was actually surprised they could get to a Finnish here. What are the loud them to do was to be able to go home and say, listen, we've really addressed this crisis? And I always say to it's not a bad thing for Nancy Pelosi sometimes to get attacked from the left. You know. It shows cheese being a pragmatic moderate manager, the house was it perfect. No. But it was an accomplishment, and they were able to get it together. Those votes were pretty strong and she complied with the Hastert rule, which we all know she had more than half of her caucus. Voting for this Bill. Does the Trump administration continue its hardline policies, we've seen a shakeup at the department of homeland security border patrol short and they do they see this as a winning issue? They say that border security and being tough on immigration is what's going to get President Trump reelected. It's what's gonna keep Republicans in control of the Senate, and they're not going to give that up or anything. They're going to push even harder. We've already seen them labeling Democrats as wanting open borders, really attacking them for, for policies like wanting to give illegal immigrants healthcare. They see this as their biggest issue that helps fuel them forward in twenty

"I F on Capitol Hill. House speaker Nancy Pelosi says President Trump just took a pass on working on national infrastructure problems. But the president insists he will work with the Democrats want solve the investigations, stop Gary Bolander joins us live now from Washington with the very latest. It sounds like both sides are acting like children. And what is new in that? Nothing. It's not the first time and it certainly won't be the last you know, you would look at this and say, well, that means you're going to get done because there's no way House Democrats are going to give up on their investigations. But you do have lawmakers on both sides, who think look, you know, this'll blow over in a couple of days and even Lindsey Graham, who was a big supporter of the president is saying, you know, while he disagrees with what House Democrats are doing and says they're going overboard. You can't give up on governing and that, you know there are things that have to get done spending bills, the debt ceiling, you know, things will get done that have to get done, whether or not, there was agreement to be reached on infrastructure. That's a question anyway. And you know, Democrats just think that the president did this because he really didn't have a plan on how to pay for the two billion dollar infrastructure plan that he talked about a couple of weeks ago. Yeah. Well, couple of US senators, excuse me. Chuck Schumer of democrat, and also, Republican, John Kennedy from Louisiana have both said, essentially that this congress has accomplished nothing. We're not doing nothing. We need to get back to work. What are the odds is going to take any effect? Well, you know, Kennedy is so plainspoken, we love him up here because he just doesn't miss words that said, you know, this is what you get when you have a house controlled by Democrats in the Senate controlled by Republicans. The hope is that maybe they get a disaster relief Bill, and there was talk by the Senate majority leader to perhaps get it done on the Senate side before they leave for a week long break next week right now, we don't think that's going to happen. There's some issues that have to be ironed out, but certainly, you know, infrastructure was going to be, you know, one of these issues that everybody thought there was enough support. You know, after the two thousand sixteen election to try and to try and get something through, you know, we'll have to see but you know with. With divided government, you know, things come, slowly. Yeah. You know, you can't look at anything that goes on up there, unless you look through the political lens. And I'm wondering what the what the smart political watchers are saying about who's going to come out of this with the with the best weapon for going into the election season. Boy, you know that remains to be seen, because you just have to see what House Democrats end up doing, you know Pelosi, it's been pushing back vigorously against taking the impeachment step. You know, she's really been straddling the line. She has been using these key phrases that, that really, you know, take shots at the president, you know, using the phrase cover up and later yesterday. She said the administration refusal to hand over information could begin peachable offense, but she was around when, you know, Republicans when after President Clinton who came out, looking pretty well after that, because, you know, Republicans really didn't have public support, and she's concerned about moving too quickly. So looking ahead to next year. You know, it's really perhaps, a little too early to see exactly what happens. But if congress doesn't do anything, you know, Republicans, probably in terms of legislation Republicans probably will be hurt because they have the White House and the Senate. The Pentagon today is supposed to present plan to the White House to send up to ten. One thousand more troops to the Middle East to try to beef up defenses against Iran. I know the president has said in the past, he actually wants fewer troops over there. So, so what's going to be the happy medium boy, you know, it's all in the numbers, and, you know, you can say ten thousand you can say five thousand but lawmakers are concerned that, you know, they just weren't kept up to speed on exactly what the administration had planned and, you know, you had key lawmakers on the Republican side saying, hey, you've got to give us briefings on exactly what you're planning to do. Now they did get a briefing yesterday. It's a little later than they would have liked. And, you know, certainly the key is what kind of troops. Are you sending? And we're just gonna have to see exactly how the numbers play out a lot of times you start off with a big number, and, and people scale it back, and we're going to have to see exactly how that works. But, you know, sending troops anywhere always opens up a can of worms and, you know, raises concerns about how long will they be their what will be their mission? You know that kind of thing. And you know, given the history and a variety of parts of the world, there's a real reticence and opening this store. All right. Jerry. Thank you very much. Always a pleasure talking with you. There's a Jerry boat, Landry in Washington. We were talking about Senator John Kennedy jury said that he's a plain spoken in that they just they just love him. And he was talking about the how the house leadership, Senator Kennedy from Louisiana. So the house leadership needs to make a decision on impeachment, so they can get back to work in his words say this gently, and I say this hopefully, constructively to my friends in the house leadership. The house leadership needs to urinate or get off the pot. I think it's really peer get off the pot or blank s s the get off the pot. But the point is, well, taken. Yes. And well said, yes as, as we have done. Nothing zero zilt NADA. He's right. I'm not sure that's a bad thing, but it would sure be nice if they. They done nothing. If we have some sense of a real effort in congress. By both parties to talk about things about, which they disagree and see if they can't some kind, you know, reach across the aisle, and come to some agreement. Yes. Stop with the politics already folks, if atop can't even do it with the president and Nancy Pelosi can't even do you expect anyone else to do it. Then we have this from North Korea. It's just funny because says nothing as far as I'm concerned has nothing to do with Joe Biden, except that. It's they were talking about Joe Biden after he was highly critical of Kim Jong UN and North Korean government. They labeled you know, this is a this is a matter of translation, kind of lost in translation are a little bit of a little bit off. They referred to Joe Biden North Korea. As a fool of low IQ and, and imbecile bereft of elementary quality as a human being, I think something got lost in the translation and a little bit. Boy, I'll tell you what when you've been accused of an imbecile as being an imbecile bereft of elementary quality as a human being. That's about as low as you can get. I think so. Wow. Coming up on KLIF. We'll tell you why you should not charge your phone at the airport. You're headed. They're not charge it at the airport used those chargers. Showdown looms between Congress and attorney general over Mueller report

"It was a week of mounting tension in Washington between the Trump administration and Democrats in congress attorney general William Barr refused to testify Thursday before the House Judiciary committee in his place. An empty chair chairman Jerrold Nadler says if bar does not hand over the unredacted Muller report and its underlying evidence. The attorney general will be held in contempt of congress history will judge us for how we face this challenge. We will all be held accountable. In one way or the other. And if he does not provide this committee with the information at demands and the respect it deserves is the bars moment of accountability will come soon enough. The Justice department objected to Democrats demand that bar take questions from staff attorneys who worked for members of congress. "As the government shutdown drags on into its eighteen th day. Each side is walking around saying we've got the advantage. And when you think you've got an advantage you keep the pressure on in Washington. You create pressure by turning on your PR machine. We really cannot resolve this until we open up government. And we made that very clear to the president on Capitol Hill House Democrats announce they passed bills to restore funding for most of the government Senate Democrats took it a step further yesterday saying we're going to block every other Bill in the Senate until we get a vote on these ones a senior democratic aide said that Republicans should instead lead with funding bills passed by the newly democratic controlled house. "Anonymous op Ed in the New York Times. But on Twitter, he didn't hold back early this morning. The president went off writing the deep state in the left and their vehicle. The fake news media are going crazy all this directed at yesterday's skating column in the New York Times written by an unnamed senior official in the Trump administration in it the official described the president style as impetuous adversarial petty and ineffective, adding many Trump appointees have vowed to do what we can to preserve our democratic institutions while thwarting, Mr. Trump's more misguided impulses until he is out of office. The author said some cabinet officials have even considered invoking the twenty fifth amendment to remove the president from office throughout the day. Senior officials rushed to deny writing the column including vice President Mike Pence. I think it's a disgrace. The anonymous senatorial published in the New York Times represents a new low in American journalism. And I think the New York Times should be shamed. And I think whoever wrote this anonymous editors should also be ashamed as well. Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill house speaker Paul Ryan, also criticized the author a person who obviously is living in dishonesty doesn't help the president. So if you're not interested in helping the president you shouldn't work for the president's far as I'm concerned, but at least one Republican Tennessee Senator Bob corker said no one should be surprised anyone who said any dealings over.

"Scrimmage you talking about himself and reince priebus as kanaan able the biblical story of brothers at odds hurry was yesterday in a phone interview with cnn you want to talk about the staff we have had odd we have had differences what i said we are brothers from the uh on the podium at because we're off the some brothers or white able other brothers can fight with each other and get along i don't know officials repairable or not that will be up to the president nancy i mean you're watching this from capitol hill houses being received in congress this is a this is a presidency that was supported by a lot of fundamentalist christian groups you've got very conservative members of congress who presumably or not not so keen about this kind of comportment or is this just forgiven or people saying what's going on down there you know more than the vulgarity i think what concerns democrats and republicans alike on capitol hill is the fact that what scaramucci has been saying uh reveals a white house staff that is i you know at loggerheads and appears to have knives out for one another uh he's only been there at the white house for five minutes and already appears to be the sworn enemy of two of the other most powerful people at the white house that means that when he came in the present it already clearly knew that there was incredible animosity between scaramucci and priebus and bannon it's it's easier to understand now why sean spicer said if he's coming i'm going.
