Must have come and have an international background because you travel a bit. Do you ever go back to your motor land home. Oh yes last.

"Wanna ask you about your background. So i know you're not the first generation of of nelson or whatever surname. There is on your maternal side in this in the ohio. You've talked a bit about your mom's relationships with plants and what you learned from her. But i also know it goes even further back than that. So how far back. You want to tell me about how that kind of relationship with the land is part of your family. Oh absolutely so. We're very lucky because not not every person of color especially not every black person in the united states is lucky enough to be able to trace a lot of their familial history back on my mom's side of the family with her father they'd been they've been in the united states since the sixteen hundreds they were farmers in new england after the revolutionary war. And with my mom's mom's side of the family with my my nanna. She was a second generation. Cape verde an immigrant to the cape cod area and with a lot of bigger and immigrant families. A lot of them brought foraging practices with them and i mean my nanna was like working in the cranberry bogs in the nineteen thirties. To help better support her family and bats a whole lot of exposure to plant lice. But you just get to learn about with each passing day while you're out there so tell me more about that. She was picking the cranberries and selling them for a while. Picking the cranberries for a someone else's business which one of many reasons why i think being a forager of colour is very revolutionary as because nine times out of ten historically in even in the present day you're a person of color and are attending the land it is typically for someone else's game and that person tends to be richer and unfortunately often quieter than you and so when you go back far enough has some sort of connection to foraging because none of us would be here wasn't for that action but for the indigenous people who are already here like that. That was food that was eating and then a lot of those indigenous folks in turn taught black people who were enslaved. Those same tips and tricks in about the same kinds of plants because as a black person living on a plantation. You're lucky if you were getting enough to eat to sustain the kind of duress you were putting your body there every day so it was smart to know how to forage. How trap how to fish how to hunt so you could better take care of yourself. Better take care of your family and the rest of your community

"All the individuals in the group are each other's closest relative you know and in this case you lose that because montero's is kind of buried within the rest of what's currently considered band room's right so we're looking at a tax onomic list you've got dandruff subspecies band subspecies montero's enron subspecies hendra. So you know that some funny business going on in their exactly so. This proposal is trying to address that and return the situation to which however many species they decide to split it into. They're trying to make those species at least modified attic iq so the three each other's closest relatives and that's where like the different levels come in So a recent Paper came out with a really great genetic data. You know we've talked in the past about the next generation sequencing techniques that allows to thousands and thousands of markers you know and that's what they did And they got individuals from almost all the various band populations and were able to show that there was some pretty good genetic structure showing you know there really are differences amongst several different populations are there clusters among the populations. That seems to be like the the important things. Like if we can break out into these custer's at least that's a good first step right yes exactly. And in the actually cluster. Pretty cleanly with this data set. You know they've got thousands of these nuclear markers and so. The subjective nature comes in when you want to say okay but how different just because they cluster cleanly doesn't necessarily mean they're different enough to be called species. Obviously than gray area of species definitions. Come in but they're clearly not monophyletic as is banned so something needs to be done. The most obvious split. That will probably come of this. Is that the population in the cape verde. Islands seemed to be kind of the relative to all the other bands including montero's though thing has already been split so that seems to me to be a pretty safe split it at least 'cause the the thing that's most distantly related to be its own species but if it's the only thing split that still leaves montero's buried within bandra nats wild the recommendation..

"You're kind of intimately aware of what time in the moon cycle. It is Most nights you have enough light from the stars or the moon to see at least part of the waves so it doesn't really feel like it's like scarier darker anything without it's very peaceful It's very interesting ceiling by night. We chose to not use autopilot for the whole crossing To save power mostly and so you steer we steered for three hour shifts and then rested for six hours and we just had severi interesting. Feeling you get to steer by feel in the end you can see kind of the wave crests in the darkness. But it's yeah being at a sight of land for that long. It's a very unique feeling. I don't think there's anything quite like it. Did it ever feel like groundhog day. Kind of or really a whole time or were there things that you were doing to keep busy. I guess yeah. I mean i would say i'll be very honest that it was not one hundred percent of pleasant experience for me and mostly because of sleep deprivation so when we started off You know every time we get an overnight passage somewhere. I wouldn't sleep very well to begin with so in the first forty eight hours of our our main crossing from cape verde to grenada. I slept three hours and the boats moving around quite a lot. When you sail down wind and you you're like lying in your bunk and you just kind of feel your your organs can move around lying there and you see it takes a while asleep through that side. I slept in the whole crossing. My longest sleep was five and a half hours and that something like so on her off time. We often just slept in the middle of the day as well Read some books. We had a lot of conversations on the boat kind of about big topics in an any like daily chore. Just takes least twice as long on the boat You know if you're if you're cooking something just imagine if your kitchen is kind of like rolling ten degrees one way and then ten degrees the other way and you got your tomatoes rolling around on the counter aren't gonna you just have to plan things out. Be a bit careful but what you're doing. Did you ever experience any seasickness. Yeah yeah especially at the beginning of the year and then towards the end of the year and on the crossing. I was pretty pretty comfortable There was a seasick pill that i would take if i felt it coming on but so by the end of it it would be okay. What was really bad was also the land sickness that you get from coming back on land and it would usually hit me in a marina office so after a first weekend on the boat. We come back to a marina and i'm sitting at this lady's desk in sleight. I swear the whole street is moving up and down like you just feel like you're still moving so that was a that was an interesting phenomenon but it did go away over time kinda got better and better. Your went on a haven't heard too much about land sickness. But i guess that that would make sense once. You've kind of adopted two one to being kind of in a rocking motion all the time. Yeah did you see like crossing. Do you see much of like wildlife or other boats we saw spectacularly not some orca whales. They swam with us for about two minutes and of in the middle of the ocean which was so wild and my boyfriend was on watch and just can a yelled in the windows lay. Wales will come up and they swam right beside the boat like a meter away from the boat and it was so exciting to see that i was just thrilling experience..

"And drinking water and all that kind of stuff. What did that look like. And how how did you sort of. Make sure that you're going to have enough sustenance to do this trip. Yeah that's a really good question. We ended up spending about a month in the canary islands preparing for our trip and that included Knees more hours than i care to admit on excel meal plan and i did you know think quite a lot about what meals are easy to make the vote and what meals are made of ingredients. That will last a long time so certain vegetables where you can get them to last a really long time and Sailors have tricks like wrapping carrots individually in aluminum foil to make them last even longer. So you can kind of like think through how you're going to. Hi how are you going to really make the most of fresh food as well as obviously like store bought food a planned to do the crossing with two additional crew and so we just kind of expanded. The meal plan and added additional can week of food for safety But the good thing about the canary islands was very easy to provision. We have a lot of boats leaving. What was the expected. Time to make the atlantic crossing. Good question so from the canaries. We knew that we'd go about a week to cape verde which is what a took took a seven and a half days and then i think we thought it would be another two and a half weeks from cape verde to grenada just about what it was so if we had had any problems or been delayed kind of along the way for any reason. We wanted to make sure we also had additional foods. List many reasons you could be delayed or something breaking on your boat but it's still can float so you just keep going kind of thing so yeah we had tend to take that into consideration so it ended up being yet for four four weeks and then we also.
