"At the time Berg was murdered, radio was undergoing another colossal change. This one, from the halls of government. When Ronald Reagan took office in 1981, he inherited a media ecosystem that was flourishing, buoyed by hard won regulations. But the Reagan administration came in and began to eliminate all of those regulations. Mark Lloyd says that not long after his inauguration, Reagan's FCC started killing off the policies and guidelines that had been built up during the civil rights era. We had ascertainment. We had a set of guidelines about how to serve local communities. It was an entire regime that enforced local service and the Reagan came in all of it was gone. And how radio stations are run. No more requirements to go and find out what local residents wanted to hear. No more mandate to run educational shows. The FCC also made it harder for people to challenge broadcast licenses, like civil rights groups had done by the hundreds to get fairer representation. The long-standing fairness doctrine was still on the books, but without these other policies, it didn't have as much bite. You get rid of all that and the result is Rush Limbaugh. When broadcasting public interest moment was in full swing in the 1970s, Rush Limbaugh wasn't really a part of it. He was on the air, but he was a DJ, queueing up songs and reporting on whether and traffic in between. From 13 60 solid rock and gold, air from the morning rush hours, sunny and cold at a radar says a near 0% chance of precipitation. The streets Limbaugh had been in love with the medium since he was a kid. His dad, who was once a part owner of the station in their hometown of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, got young rush his first radio gig there in the 1960s, when rush was only 16. But after that, he found it hard to keep a job. By the early 1980s, after well over a decade in the industry, Limbaugh had been fired from 5 stations, mostly for interpersonal reasons. A lot of my data 22° nippy nippy nippy. And for Saturday, partly Claudia continued Limbaugh spent a few years working in sales for the Kansas City Royals, but he was back behind the mic in 1983. Now in his 30s and trying his hand at news coverage, he lasted less than a year before getting fired again. But the next year, in 1984, a station out of Sacramento took a gamble on Limbaugh, and gave him his own show. And it was there that he really honed his pitch. Less weather and traffic, more politics, and preening. Welcome to the Rush Limbaugh program, a program exclusively designed for rich conservatives and right minded Republicans and those who want to be either or both. And the phones lit up. What their callers wanted to argue or agree with Limbaugh's right-wing hot takes, they all wanted to talk. Ratings, sword. An advertising dollars poured in. For Limbaugh, who admit it clear that he was an entertainer and moneymaker first, pundit second, it was a gold mine. He views expressed by the host on this show are not necessarily those of the staff management or sponsors of this station. But they ought to be. Limbaugh was, in many ways, representative of the new post public interest radio dial of the mid 1980s. After deregulation began in earnest in 1981, the number of complaints to the FCC about racial stereotyping went up, so did complaints about a lack of programming for minority groups. And then, of course, in 1987, Reagan's FCC dealt the death blow. This week, the FCC voted down the fairness doctrine by a vote of four to zero. The logic of doing it with a fairness doctrine was, oh, well, now all of these towns have a hundred, 500, a thousand channels on their cable systems. And Nelson is the author of shadow network. Media, money, and the secret hub of the radical right. So anybody can find any opinion they want and we don't need to have that requirement for individual broadcasters anymore. But she says there were a couple of issues with the FCC's argument. First of all, you know, you can't watch a hundred channels. In fact, this fire hose of information is going to be so overwhelming. You're probably just stick to one or two channels. Also, not everyone had cable. And even if you did, you can't watch cable well commuting to work, or working on most job sites. Plenty of people still relied on radio, not television for their news, and the existence of cable TV didn't suddenly mean there were more radio frequencies. The fairness doctrine had not been perfect. Adhering to it was a big logistical headache, station staff had to monitor hosts for controversial material and figure out how to make free airtime available to people who wanted to respond. Many scholars believe that it kept some broadcasters who didn't want to do their due diligence from broadcasting controversial material at all. But for many, including some conservatives, it had been an important means of getting ideas out. By the time you have the repeal of the fairness doctrine in 1987, you have a whole cohort of conservatives, people like Pat Buchanan and Phyllis Schlafly, Newt Gingrich, Trent lott, who want to see the fairness doctrine kept in place. The democratic led Congress, with the help of some of these conservative leaders, actually passed a law to codified a fairness doctrine, which had just been an FCC policy. But Reagan vetoed it. And as it turns out, it wasn't a loss for the right. Without the fairness doctrine in place, highly political, often vitriolic talk radio skyrocketed. And Sacramento areas Rush Limbaugh was the breakout star of the moment. And a year after the doctrine was overturned, he's taking his act to New York City, where his radio show will be nationally syndicated. Limbaugh quickly made a name for himself from WABC in New York. Limbaugh looked to get a rise out of listeners, including liberals who made up a quarter of his audience in the early days. But as time went on, he appealed more to those who felt that popular culture was edging toward greater representation of the marginalized. And consequently, they felt, leaving them out.

more state of mind So I don't know what you missed but Diane filled us in more on the Mac murder and bottom line to this is if there are charges that are on the books that if you conspire to murder somebody in the U.S. you are liable for the charges even though the murder takes place offshore then it seems pretty open and shut But obviously her lawyers will be looking into whatever loophole they can find All right Joe and donner's grove welcome to WGN radio Hey rally this is like my old times down in Cape Girardeau Missouri Oh A wonderful market I worked for GE traveled all over the United States if you will Okay I found a new friend and your radio show here Oh yeah Well I'm delighted to delighted to delighted to have you And of course Cape Girardeau home of Billy Swann who did I can you always forget Billy Swann So all right Yeah Rush Limbaugh was the guys remembering basically never met the guy where I got it It would have been an experience So my little piece here aside from our conversation with you the other day my first interview with you guys was a surfboard if you will Yes So this one is about what are customers doing What are clients doing to sell this soft routine And I actually called my Walgreens here about who 5 minutes from where I live here to check it out to see if it's true but in San Diego there are 5 Walgreens closed This last week we recently if you will because they couldn't maintain their inventory Well I'm not surprised as I was mentioning in our little town in Arizona the bank was closed because they couldn't find any workers And I believe me You've never seen such panic when a bunch of people in town go to the bank on a Thursday afternoon and the doors are locked You know I was like what But it was they literally couldn't find stuff So the idea that they can't find inventory I'm not surprised I think this is the tip of the iceberg When you see pictures of all these ships lined up and the ocean sitting there off the port and Long Beach and such well what are we expect Exactly It's now up to over a hundred on the ships Yeah Let's see Yeah Where does the operating they have to create some deepwater ports Well yes And deepwater ports and not least them in perpetuity to China Correct There you go Yeah because we've got we've got that wonderful deepwater port further south in Mexico but China has got a lock on it My daughter just bought a new house down in Baja Peninsula Oh yeah It used to be a bed and breakfast in our 8 people had a share of the thing She wound up conniving and getting the thing for 1 million 3 quarters if you will Wow Nice You're going to turn that into a little rest and recuperation type scenario Well good I'm going down there in about a month All right But a lot of things are happening Yeah I'll see That's one way of putting it Yes I try to just fiddle while Rome continues to burn I read the tabloids rather than The New York Times and I'm probably better off but it's frightening to me I try to read a lot of stuff to make sure I get a good concentration and what the real facts are It's just a real it's an acrobatic exercise Yes it is It absolutely is And you know they always what's the ancient Chinese curse of mega living in interesting times or whatever Well it doesn't get more unstable than right now Precisely Listen I don't want to take up too much of your time right now but I has some votes on the world's worst hit records I bet you do So go for it James Okay yeah Even though I don't think that I would say I know that there are people don't particularly like of course hunting Yes honey good And then here's one that hasn't been nominated before but I know it was 5 The first song that I ever when I first called me the second time called your show you said why would you even think of that song It was just the class Yes yes My father stayed this time and I didn't like the way I got it I liked it Yeah okay Yeah I know it It's been sampled in more recent country records too And then I have a story about this robust now we tell thing that we're still in each other trying to basically take the full ride again Here's what here's my story where I take about a few recessive my father died in July of 2017 I was downtown Chicago Gone to the target store They still follow a couple of items I'm coming out Some young man teenager maybe I'd say 7 south 30 16 was talk "Gets young. Oh my gosh. I love that story. I appreciate you sharing that. I mean in the restaurant. Business if you're open for one day. It's an accomplishment if you're open for any more than one day but we all have stories like that and it. It's crazy how much i mean. I always talk about it. You have to run a marathon just to get a restaurant open and then you realize you've run the marathon and it hasn't even started the race hasn't even started actually have to run the business. Now you actually have to get people to come in and pay for all the lights in the electricity on the payroll and everything else that you're trying to accomplish. At which point did you make this shift. Because did you built like the original barbecue pit. That was in your restaurant. That was how that was the birth of old hickory pits. it was So back and there was no modern technology at all and you only had two choices you use barrel or a fit and so i thought well this be stupid if a maryland said beautiful historic building made out of red. So i've made it a the outbreaks in that found some antique Gets the patina of the brexit. Were on the building and made it looked like it was supposed to be there Wide and five eighty and three stories. Tall as billy had three floors on it so he had to go up through the floors with big slough and that took control the temperature inside. That player was a damper. You open it up. It would increase the airflow in in the heat so in decor than new clothes and that would Moderate temperature which worked fine as long as the Remember to do that. That's unfortunately ask. So they the actual true beginning of electric. It's the idea of billy. Bits came about the third time. The firetrucks game on fire trucks came brian down down. Cape girardeau right on the mississippi river and we're belch out all these parts planes and at over the risks of all the other big so start a fire. There was just so much smoke as i read. It certainly changed my hair color cutler. Made you rethink the restaurant business. That's hilarious so did you call the fire department or does someone call the fire department on the phone okay. That's going to be a better idea of the story. Steer panic so then so through. The panic comes inspiration inspiration. I mean. I love how entrepreneur. I think it's you know you never know where the inspiration has to think that you know forty seven years later you have barbecue pits. In all the greatest restaurants all the amount of the footprint that old hickory has on the barbecue world. The restaurant world the culinary world. It's so impressive. So impressive to go to cape girardeau to where you guys. You have so much love for what you're doing for the craft of barbecue and it's something that gene when we first met jean and he told us you know if you wanna learn how to barbecue the right way. We'll teach you and you can add some barbecue menu items to your to your restaurant. I said sure and once we started doing it and started using the old hickory pit to slow cooked ribs and slow cooked brisket. All of a sudden we fell in love with the craft of barbecue. But we fell in love with your brand. We fell in love with the dependability of having something done where every single day we could work on being a little bit better a little bit better making brisk a little bit better at making ribs and over time that story will will go throughout not just our village but all throughout san diego and then now that we're doing media goes all throughout the word world for you looking back seeing from those fire calls to go. Well maybe this isn't the restaurant business. Maybe there's a different business. How do you get from fire call to. Let's make a pivot and let's start to come up with what ultimately became hickory pits. Thank the real impetus was the necessity of perpetuating business on spent a lotta time all the money adnan so the open so it's not like just okay. I guess i've had enough of this move onto something else. It's like jay and so there was a struggle for a long long time to make make the transition into any kind of a reliable. How many years in was it was years. Wave modify here and there and so on delete forty seven years later we still modifying our equipment to tweak it. Prove it all that how did you. What what year did you make the switch where you are a barbecue restaurant to were all hickory. Pits like would no longer a restaurant. I'm gonna take that was about seven years seven years in somebody takeover the restaurant or did you close the restaurant until later i i held onto the restaurant for about Fifteen years okay. And that and if both the restaurant and manufacturing pits and that got to be a twenty four seven hour proposition so i gotta go and And point what is back with the restaurant. Sports develop Casual atmosphere and it's the our review so the situation would have been. I wanna do a chain of barbecue. Licensed or do. I wanted to do the yoga equipment. Yeah my choice was the equipment route for multiple rees because it wasn't an easy decision to the restaurant. Business fun business. And it's a you know you have haven't made a decide year twenty seven years old in a bar. I know i know all about it. So that's kinda can also be a betterment to progress to the against one of the most compelling danes was Friday afternoons because On friday afternoon in the restaurant business. Well everybody i knew was getting dressed up. I was stressed out. That's good. I've never heard that before is absolute truth of the restaurant. Business right there absolutely and and and that's a commitment. That restaurant estimate yes guest richer. We work whenever.

"So you know. It's just very difficult to to stay in business. At that rate you know a lot of people don't realize that when a big insurance company and we all know their names well mark is the name. Yeah well when you get the insurance through your employer. It's not like that insurance company is giving you the rate they give everybody. In the region or the state it's specifically based on the utilization patterns of this of that particular enterprise that you know that that company and if it's a small company that's had a couple of unfortunate cases. Well that's what happens when you get these crazy rates. How did you manage that. Well my brother. John forsook has salary and one on social security and doesn't get paid for being publisher and tell you what being publisher and filling out postal forms and talking to bankers. Isn't that fun. And he's doing that for free. Then the spring. I one off the payroll. I want on social security early. And so i get a part-time paycheck now. But that's how we deal with it. And you know we had to cut down on our tv listings which agitated a lot of our senior citizen readers who can't figure out how to use the channel changer. And so that's how we dealt with it and you know we haven't been able to give raises since the pandemic have you had anybody off. No we just laid off me and my brother but we're still working. There is another Newspaper in storm lake right. The storm lake pilot tribune It's still here. Why do you know a lot of a lot of communities. Don't have Even one newspaper Why storm late need to well. Because we're the only newspaper this locally owned and this newspaper is a satellite of a newspaper in spencer iowa which is forty miles away which is headquartered in cape girardeau missouri. Hometown of rush limbaugh by the way and so. It's not really a local newspaper. No offense but it's not we're local we live the editor and publisher and the owners live six blocks away from the times office. And all we care about a storm like iowa. We don't care about cape girardeau missouri or spencer or someplace in south dakota we care about star like and that's the difference and i believe that's true. The reason i think that the star tribune in minneapolis is the model for the industry. Right now. because they're independently owned by glenn taylor and the washington post is independently owned by jeff bezos and the new york times is independently owned by the souls burgers..

Yeah yeah it's it's only considered to be the most prestigious award you could win in the industry. Welcome thank you. We're being nominated for no macaroni awards before i came along and i love macaroni. So look at that alum. Macaroni and cheese nominated for the macaroni award. What's different it's different. Also you were just thing that we needed to to have on the show to push over the edge you wanna say thank god only thank you alexis do it. I told her it's called a marconi. Then choose but macaroni sounds better. I mean it does Macaroni.

Caller Wonders About Networking Conservative DAs to Be Harder on Crime

"To try to find a way to rally D A s. That are pro conservative. And institute a network type of agreement, um, of all of them that they will not go for a minimum sentence. To start out with on people that are up for crimes. Now there's a lot of reasons like why they're not going to do this number one They don't have enough personnel. And so they try and plead what the way he used to work to try and plead the minor cases, you know, like jaywalking or tickets or stuff like that. In order to focus on the on the heavier in tougher cases. If they were to try every case, Um Then you would have 99% of the cases would never get into court. And that's a fact. Because of the level of crime that goes on and the level of crime that is that is created that has nothing to do with property or the or personal injury and so forth. They have to handle all of it. That's number one number two. They're not going to agree with another D A Because every community is different than most of these days are elected. And so you won't find a network of D A is like the A. D A in, uh In Cape Girardeau, Missouri, agreeing with the D a in, uh Just pick another another town in Frederick, Maryland, because they really have nothing in common and they have to answer to their own localities. This is not complicated. It's not about a network of agreements and so forth, and so on. It's about enforcing the law. It's about getting judges who are going to comply with the law. It's about putting bad people in prison. We did it 30 years ago, 40 years ago under Reagan And the crime levels went down, but we had a Kabbalah of Radical libertarians. Um, these phony civil rights groups. Activist groups and so forth, and so on. That all got together and say We are a decriminalized legalized on and on and on. And so this is this is more to do with the nature of what's happened to our culture.

"What was your staff that you gave me our holding four percent forty four percent their body else. What happened the other night. Deondraye eight in such foul trouble that mani just basically shoved him in the second half. He played five minutes and scored. Two points will janas had his way. Because he's against those seventy five percents. Everybody else guards. He's of course. Seventy five percent of the time. So scott foster for a fact is not going to be the crew chief tonight because he's not going to referee. It's going to be james. Capers david guthrie. And courtney kirkland thank you very much for another game. I just think they're going to have to bring him back because they have to validate the credibility of it. But i also told you. Mark davis gets along very well. These very friendly with chris. I'm not saying he gives. Chris calls but chris's in his coverage zone with mark davis. I wanna see. Mark davis who refereed game. Six against the clippers in game. One or the files. I want to see him referee at least one more of these games. We haven't seen cape girardeau yet no normally a coochie can be. But there's no way skip you gotta get this game four. He's not officiating tonight. There's no way you go another three games and not getting stopped balls at least once all right. He's just terrible. It's just wrong. It's not fair. So here's the point. Eight nne is credible enough on your honest and if you tell me he can play forty minutes tonight and not fell out of the game and that's probably a big. If but if he ran. Then i think janas can be held in control like. I don't know what you call control. He could score thirty with fifteen rebounds again if you don't have to wall him if you don't have to dublin then maybe they can play credible defense on the shooter's eagles score thirty plus. We just averaged thirty thirty four and fourteen. So you you'll give me damage. Right is average. I'm i'm gonna say.

Told me all you got to listen to this guy is hilarious. He's smart. He's conservative. He's funny, and then I buy became a fan. I just started my radio journey a year earlier, and I think all of us probably if you could think right now, where were you? When you first heard of Rush Limbaugh? There was nobody telling me what I could not say on the radio, and it was nobody telling me what I had to say. It's my show. I'm the arbiter on the boss when he was in Northern California Broadcasting in Sacramento. He was getting a lot of attention. And ah, lot of that was because of the chances that he took when he was live on the air. That attention is what got him to New York City. Next Rush Limbaugh took his show national. And while the man from Cape Girardeau, Missouri, went on to become a major political player, hear him tell the story about what it was like meeting a conservative he looked up to and admired as the age of brush, narrated by Vice President Mike Pence continues. "April. Pleasure and honor. You know, Mother's day coming right up and on our GI be high note for the day rule. Let's remember that every day was Mom's Day for Rush Rush in his brother David. As you recall, we're blessed to have a wonderful mother and Milly. We played that great clip earlier in the program about Russia's teacher told his mom Millie that they won't amount to anything if he doesn't change his ways. Sadly, Millie passed away too far too soon at the age of 72 what 11 years ago, But she lived long enough to see Rush and his success and his show and his books, all breaking records when it comes to sales, and he talked with his mom, his staff will tell you every day, no matter what. It speaks volumes. Um, Milly was even a frequent guest on this program. So you know, you know how how rush in frequently invited guests what he thought of his mom. But nobody could put it in better words than rush himself feels what he had to say about Millie. Those of you who have been listed on this program since the beginning. Will no doubt remember my mother and her numerous appearances on this programming on the television show. She the queen of the blue haired bloody Mary gang. As as I called her and her friends. We grew up little town in Missouri. And with this program first started, it was just building and it was the kind of white hot popular associated with something new. Unique. Everybody glomming onto it, and people driving through southeast Missouri would pull off. I 55 drive into Cape Girardeau and look up my mother and they go by the house. And she'd let him in. And thankfully, every one of them was a solid, upstanding citizen fan, folks. I'll say I I got so mad. One day it got to the point. I go home to visit my mother and I'd get there to be 150 books stacked up on the table in the dining room that she'd collected from people have been sending him in. And I said, Mother, I'm coming here to get away from the notes on you. But these people love you. You got it sent me those books and you've got a sign. It was like in similar back, so I'm not gonna time to talk to you. That's okay. You have to pay attention to these people. The fact that people all over the country loved her little boy just Was the greatest thing that ever happened to her. Yeah, and everybody who met Milly loved her to the folks. My mother invited The National Enquirer in they have coffee. When they came by son. We don't have anywhere Limbaugh's. We got nothing to hide. Whatever that they want to see your draft records. I'll be glad to show him to you. She did that in, the Inquirer reporter said. I can't believe this course. I don't know about any of this until it's over. And I said Mother, Lucas is my business. You can't be injecting yourself normal, son. You you don't I was always the son. I never knew what was good for me. I never knew. Right thing to do. I was I was. I remember. I got so mad one day when I finally had to start flying privately, just for the The privacy of the security of it. She picked me up the airport and I spend the weekend on Sunday. She take me back to the airport one Sunday. She was behaving extremely differently. Eager for me to leave normally, wasn't the case kept reminding me I had to get to the airport. And I said, Well, you're standing by a noon. Well, you know, you sure you really should get there a little earlier? Because you never know whether, and this is no. The weather's fine of checked it. Well, you still you shouldn't By the way, I'll meet you out there. I've got to go, Um, do some things, so I'll just meet you at the airport. David can take you Okay, So David came pick me up. We drive to the airport, We drive up to the airplane. And I can see I mean as her car. And there's another car and I look in the windows of the airplane is a much people in there. I got on the airplane, and she had four people She didn't know. Who had stopped in the week prior to say hello and she'd invited him back to meet me and hadn't told they're big fans and she hadn't told me any of this and they're on the airplane. But no, she was just so Crowd that the people of this country loved her little boy if they called her or if they wrote her a letter or if they sent her a book of mine designed they were King and Queen, and she wanted to make sure That they knew that our family appreciated him. Wow, That is that is such a wonderful story. It is so nice.
