We use it pretty frequently, but it seems like that's not the case right now for the oyster industry on Cape Cod before the pandemic oysters were at the top of the shell fish food chain. As faras popularity with consumers now demand for half Shell oysters has seen a sharp decline in Massachusetts restaurants and that's really hurting Cape Cod oyster Farms. Oyster sales dropped by 80% back in April, and the Losses keep coming, even though restaurants have reopened at a limited capacity Micro knock owns an acre family run Oyster Farm in Mashpee. Well I would defied it very differently from what I was a child. I was said to Sunday school as many kids are. And then I had trouble with the resurrection. So I would not join the church but I was still probably more interested than many of the kids did at enter the church it's been one of the most important interests of my life. And continues to be. And it doesn't have to be Christianity I'm very much taken with the poet. Rumi who is a Muslim Sufi poet. And read him every day. and. Have no answers but have some suggestions I know that a life is much richer with spiritual. Part. To it. And I also think nothing is more interesting. So I, cling to it right and then. You I mean you talk about growing up in a sad depressed place a difficult place I mean in another you don't you don't Belabor this I mean in another place there's a place you talk about. Your one of many thousands who've had insufficient childhoods. But that you spend a lot of your time walking around the woods. Yes Ohio I did and and I think it saved my life. B. days beat the drop the curfew and they have not made any arrests actually over the past couple of days zero the most they have two hundred that was on Monday I was actually with a group of marching in this area in the city and we got caught on a block police basically can everybody in and start arresting people one by one but a very tense situation on that day so they have since backed up with if you think of that may be provoking a more intentional violence and such so there's no curfew here in DC despite the massive amount of people here it's really interesting so the the idea is possibly police doing things like they they did just this past weekend in in Boston really happily enforcing using tear gas and things like that may be in some senses causing the violence to escalate yeah I think what happened on Monday and I was there well it was a really intense situation where they really were enforcing the curfew dangerously but they perhaps felt that maybe that wasn't the solution that's not to say the police are not following these marches we see police officers from DC calling people as as they March here but they have significantly backed off in fact in Lafayette park National Guard and secret service to disappear from the White House aides with Spence blocking people from getting to the White House so that security has ratcheted down significantly I hear in the district as far as that goes thank you so much for calling in we will continue to follow this is situation in DC and all over the country protests calling for an end to police brutality former Minneapolis police officer Derek show then accused of second degree murder now in the death of George Floyd is expected in court early next week ABC's Alex Perez is in Minneapolis so many people curious about.
Early June: You Can Still Plant
"I would like to say, is that for most people in most parts of this country? Early June is not too late to plant. Now there may be some areas you know in the Florida, you know Texas where it's very hot already. Even in those areas you can probably put in some of those heat, loving plants, tomatoes, eggplants that stuff. Yeah, yeah, but in most parts of the country you can still be planting in early June, and frankly through most of June and it. You can still plant some things from seed so if you haven't yet. Yet put in seeds for your summer squash or your cucumbers or your beans get them in the ground now the warmer soil temperatures will mean that those things will be right out of the ground and up and running, and we'll just catch up. You'll be amazed at how quickly they catch up and other things like the Salads and the Rubella and crops like carrots and radishes by all means plant though seats so are you saying that the warmer soil temperatures will shorten the germination time on those seeds? Yes, yes, though the warmer the soil, the shorter. Shorter Germination time for most plants you can plant a lettuce seed in April in it might take two to three weeks to germinate that same lettuce seed in May might take a week to germinate, and that led a seed in June will be up and three days. Well, that's great especially. If you're an impatient, Gardner like me now I wish I hadn't planted my lettuce seeds. Already because I'm going out there every morning and I'm looking and I'm like where are you? Where are you come on, show your face. Okay, that's good to know it is. Is Not, too. I think a lot of people do think if they haven't already started their seeds by June that they've missed the boat and I'm glad to know that that's not the case that's right and in terms of planting from plants, you know it is a little late to start a tomato from seed right in the ground, but you can certainly plant tomato plants and eggplant plants and pepper plants now so it's not too late to get those in the ground implant form if your garden centers still have them or if you have had them. By your kitchen window, or or in a place you are feeling more and more guilty that you have put them in the ground that happens to a lot of us. Don't feel guilty. Just get them in the ground. I have a friend in Wisconsin and so he's like zone four and he posted the other day on facebook. Because other people are saying Oh. Yeah, there. These are tomatoes. Got Them Ready I'm going to put him outside and he's like. Don't do it. We're going to get some more frost up here and he. He really is a hardcore about this, and he said he said. Said I don't want the earliest tomatoes I want the most tomatoes, so he waits, and he puts his tomato plants out later, because then they are more vigorous, and they do produce better because those soil temperatures are warmer, so take a lesson from that it's not just a matter of last frost date that's deceiving without testing the temperature of your soil with the soil thermometer. You can get a good idea of soil temperature by what your nighttime temperatures are, and if the nighttime temperatures in your area are going below fifty at night, then the soil is too cold for those warm weather crops. But once you can look at that long range forecast in you see that the nighttime temperatures are reliably above fifty for the next seven to ten days. That's a sign you can plant, and for some regions like northern Vermont to and Cape. Cod and northern Wisconsin that fifty degree at night often doesn't come until into June well I. think that's the perfect takeaway and we should end it right here. I did not know that about nighttime temperatures, being reflective of soil temperatures, and I would say to all of our burgeoning vegetable growers there. That's the most important takeaway from this
Coronavirus Self-care Strategy
"Thank you so much Dr Seakor for being with us. You know it's nice to have a nurse practitioner on what what has been your take with all of this cove it. Have you been handling it? Oh, man, I've had to ramp up myself care. It's just kinda crazy out there. I've had to limit my news. Consumption I've had to really ramp up my exercise and just sleep getting more sleep setting alarm for that. It's really challenging. Sleep right now for me is so tough owes up this morning at five am odd because I just I can't sleep and. Yeah and It's funny just today. I'm like a die hard. Andrew Cuomo Tone in love with him. I call him my president. I'm like I said to my husband Mike. You think he's just like. Can We? Just what is the rules to get him on the ballot? Right on the ballot right? Thanks so on real, but other than that I've had to turn off the news, too, because it just yeah. Even the evening talk, it's just overwhelming. I mean we can't lose our hope. Too much of this information you can really lose your hope. And where are you right now? CAPE COD Massachusetts okay. where? where? Where on the Cape right at the Canal so near Plymouth? Okay so on the Cape Cod. Canal is a little shack so to speak called Seafood Chantey. CATES, that's like it's a mazing takeout. It's my favorite. It is incredible. Johnny Academies who went to College, but my dad I would die. Hard grew up McCabe my hotel. In the town of Barnes Omayyad. Liam's is no longer Nassir. Beach no worry. Our close allies just went down there last weekend, and they had to just take the shack down. Because of erosion is just so sad. Oh, that's too bad. Obse string onion rings. Who is? Now I missing McCabe. I love I. It's hard to have a tough day here when you're at the Cape. I love that. We're talking about shoestring onions because we're GONNA. Get right into it. Dr, Seymour I brought you on, because so many of us we are now in the throes of summer. We weren't able to get to the gyms even for places that are opening up, it's not the same. What can we do to drop the quarantine? Fifteen or you know? I came up with this Jingle and it represents the word pandemic, and each letter in in pandemic can be one of your self care steps when I even made a little. A little law. List. WHO IS GONNA sing the Jingle for I. Wish I could in my dreams I sing. Okay Calera user all the pillars of self care and I can take through those yes I would love that. All right so basically what everyone needs to think about is. We are really not trained to ramp up ourselves. CARE will release stressed in fact. The culture basically reinforces that we lose the wheels off our wagon right and we go directly to Ben and Jerry's and chocolate chip cookies. Whatever it is, so you have to really develop a plan and that's like my first step in pandemic. Plan and you have to have a program and you have to figure out how am I gonNA deal with this quarantine. Right. We have to ramp up your self care. Figure out. What am I gonNa do for the week. What am I gonNa do tomorrow and maybe tomorrow I just planned to drink. More water I haven't a match today I. Don't usually match my water, but it can be very powerful. Yeah, our love, and how many of you out? There are starting your day with the large glass of water. Good job. Ryan Job Amber Y- I start my day with a large cup of coffee, not gonNA lie boming well I. I love coffee, too, but I usually start with a large last water in the coffee. Going to help you in a especially if you have any. Can to actually have you sleep disrupted fifteen hours after your last caffeine. So, that's something most people don't know. How I am, that might be well. I do drink two cups of coffee, generally like seven like right when I get up I be lying to the coffee machine and so now I'm drinking them by because I don't drink coffee in the afternoon river because I know that I know that it's like I will be up till know. Chris come home. So that's planning, basically planning is essential. If you fail to prepare, YOU'RE GONNA prepare to fail and a lot of people when they're home. They just feel like they're out of their routine right so that planning also essentially creating a routine for yourself, and for so many people at home right now very chaos, even though it's been a few months now it's still chaos, not going back to the way it was and prior to this whole situation or eating out fifty percent of the time. Now they're not. What are they eating at home? How do you approach that whole situation at home with all those triggers in the cabinets and trigger people? Maybe that you're living like my husband pulls out the Ben and Jerry's at night and sits right next. Meet chomping on it like. Eating my egg whites an hour before I go to sleep. In it. Right now he's trained. I'm very trained and the good thing about training. Good thing about healthy habits is they run themselves most of the time. However, it is more challenging when you have a lot more stress in your life. "Shore up to Cape Cod in Massachusetts the window between Memorial Day and Labor Day is make or break for hotels restaurants arcades places like T. shirt shops on top of potential concerns about the corona virus pandemic more than thirty six million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits pinching disposable incomes what will the summer look like for beach towns and businesses the wait all year for summer here Scott Calvert reporter at the Wall Street journal Scott must be a lot of anxiety yeah they're super anxious because you know basically they make their money from Memorial Day to Labor Day every summer and this year is no different except everything is different this year right and their very stressed out I think because Hey there are a lot of restrictions still in a lot of these beach towns you know really a call across the northeast and mid Atlantic all the way up into New England and there are questions about who will actually show up you know once the restrictions are eased in terms of in terms of toward a certain end customers and how comfortable they'll be visiting and and spending their money so big question marks yeah Jeez art so in your neck of the woods along the the Maryland shore and if the one guy's court your story I early on he said I basically have a hundred and ten days to make money for three hundred sixty five days that which is not unusual however summer saying I am the guy just trying to make it to next year exactly yes I was in Ocean City Maryland and you know this is a this is the time of year when things are really starting to heat up you know there are seven thousand year round residents but on big summer weekends you can have three hundred thousand people in Ocean City on the board walk on the beach at the miniature golf places of the restaurants and the bars the use of parks in all the usual things that you do a summer beach town and the person you mentioned Kevin Gibbs he operates the door restaurant at the foot of the boardwalk more or less and part of his challenges he's a mostly indoor restaurants got fifty three tables and right now they're zero service allowed indoors at restaurant in restaurants in Maryland and they haven't even moved to the point where you can have even limited outdoor seating so he's not here the take out window which does a good chunk of of his business but he really needs that dining room to open up again yeah so what kind of restrictions have been lifted at this point that may be offering some measure of optimism for folks in say Ocean City Maryland well you're about ten days ago the town opens a boardwalk and the beach and then last week governor Larry Hogan listed statewide stay home order and moved into a phase one which among other things allows for retail establishments to the open at fifty percent capacity but what the cumbersome city did at that point was say that hotels and short term rentals could start taking guests again and so that means that you know people can someone go to Ocean City they can they can they can stay in the hotels and do do some things but there today obviously are pretty limited in what they can do still far as restaurants go stick with Scott Calvert reporter at the Wall Street journal this piece is called for beach towns coronavirus means a make or break summer starts now have any of these independent owners and operators of various beach entities found that the paycheck protection program was a help in urging some sort of gap absolutely I talked to several business owners who have applied for and received those loans one guy I talked to Adam shall he is what are your castle in the sands hotel the whole family business that's been there since the late nineteen fifties I think it opened in nineteen sixty so long track record he actually got a paycheck protection alone in the five hundred thousand dollar range which he said is is pretty key you know and so that means he's he can he can hire our folks back and and use that money to pay them and then if he you know meet certain criteria that map converted to a grant becomes forgivable so he's he's taken advantage of that he also got deferment on mortgage payments from from a lender and in addition he you know he normally does several hundred thousand dollars worth of of upgrades to the hotel you know just kidding of super stop right and so he's going to pull back on on that you know I guess in the off season after the summer is over here to get a lot of stuff this past winter so those three things is giving him a great sense of optimism that while his gross revenue will probably be down he thinks he's given that out pretty close to a typical summer thing Scott Scott Calvert reporter at the Wall Street journal twenty minutes now in front of the hour.
Should I Get My Soil Tested?
"If your garden is gorgeous and perfect and you have no problems. Would you need to get a soil test done? I would say it might be good just for your curiosity but I recognize that it does come at a cost. You know it can cost anywhere from around twenty bucks twenty five dollars to have the soil tested so no if your soil kind of goes under the. If it ain't broke don't fix that's exactly. Yeah because I'm in New York. The soil tests were considerably more than twenty or twenty five but it was more like the fifty dollar range so I would always say and this is what I've always done. If if it ain't broke don't fix it if you if you notice. Your plants are not growing the way you think you should. There's some indication that that there's a problem either they're not flowering or the foliage is sickly yellow. Or then. I would do it but I would say soil test before you actually try to do anything to improve your soil because as you mentioned you can't know what the problem is. You're just be a shot in the dark. The one exception that I would say to. If it ain't broke don't fix. It would be annual selling. And that's because yes annuals have short season to do their thing. Most of them are nitrogen hogs they bloom at the end of new growth. And what stimulates new growth nitrogen? So for your annuals you would be better off. Fertilizing regularly or using time release fertilizer or a mix of time release and Inorganic Product. That has a higher rate of nitrogen in it. I I know that all of the horticultural universities who do testing on things like how annuals grow best. They see that they grow better with fertilizer. And that's been my experience as well so and that brings up another question. I agree annuals. Do need that fertilization. Because they have a short amount of time to grow. Produce Flowers set seed. That's it that's their job and they need a lot of nutrition. But what if you have annuals planted in the same containers the same garden bed as perennials? Or as woody's is that a problem people ask me this all the time. Oh interesting well I guess for things like Rooftop Gardens where you might have a shrub or a perennial in a container with annual. Frankly I would fertilize in that case anyway because these plants are in smaller areas. They're growing in a container right. So yeah I would go ahead and fertilize in a container by disagree. That at this only happens in containers. I think people with small gardens like I have here in Santa Fe have no choice but to Inter plant their annuals with their perennials. The vast acreage you have on Cape Cod offers many more growing opportunities. But I didn't mean to imply that it only happened in containers I okay. I meant to imply that in urban gardens it's more likely to happen. In containers that you've got shrubs and annuals or perennials and annuals mixed together. But I absolutely mix in annuals perennial gardens and around trump's and everything and I've fertilize the area where the annuals are going to be planted and does that excite you know give some nutrients to the perennials absolutely but. I do try and target the fertilizer into the area where the annuals are. Yeah so a little bit of that. Fertilizer may extend into the reach of the perennials and the and the shrubs but the focus is on the annuals right. So it's very possible outside of feeding your animals every year that you might not need to fertilize all your other plants. Every year depending on what? The results of that soil test are absolutely and. I think that we should a pause before we routinely feed things like trees for example. Because we don't want to push growth artificially for tree. We want it to grow as nature intended for them to grow and Unless we know that they are not getting the nutrients that they need. I think we need to err on the side of caution personally. I'm afraid to get a soil test done because I think my soil is so awful. I don't want to know I don't want to know because then I'll be obliged to do something about it. So don't panic. You are not a bad gardner. If you don't fertilize your garden. Every year. The important thing is to find out if you need to fertilize. So if you've got problem areas take soil samples send it into your co op extension office or your local Land Grant University. And they'll tell you if you need to fertilize
