Blue Origin chalks up 13th successful test flight
"What an exciting morning it was for the blue origin rocket scientists in Kent as they watched their 13th successful launch Take place. It happened at a site in Texas. But as Christian Davenport reports in the Washington Post The 20 year old company. Blue Origin still hasn't reached orbit or put a human in space and Christian joins us on the coma News line. What was the purpose of today's launch? Yeah, thanks for having me. So the purpose of today's launch was to launch their new shepherd vehicle. It was a test launch. It goes not to orbit as you mentioned, but it goes sub orbital. It goes straight up and straight down. Ultimately, this is a vehicle that's going to fly paying customers to space. We would have thought that would have happened by now. But they're event, some delays and setbacks and and, of course, the Corona virus. Pandemic. But while it didn't have any people on board, it did have some payloads, including some research that was placed outside of the booster that could be used to help the lunar lander that blue origin is developing for NASA in its quest to get back to the moon that would help it land. Very precisely on the moon on so that experiment was on board. The new Shepherd for their Askew mentioned there's 13th successful launch this morning. Well, delays and pandemics aside as you write, Lord and kind of has a motto of keeping a slow pace. Why, though they lost a contract with the Pentagon not too long ago? Well, you're right. I mean, the motto is Jeff Bezos has said that they wanted to go step by step ferociously. But there's been some criticism of the company that they've been moving too slowly at a time. When you see companies like Space six, you know, which got the orbit relatively quickly. They're flying humans. They of their first Ah, flight of NASA astronaut in May and brought them back safely a couple months later. That you know what is taking blurred and so long and they hadn't flown their new Shepherd's vehicle since December, So there was sort of a 10 month gap there, But I will tell you and I've been down to Cape Canaveral in Florida. You drive by the manufacturing facility that blue origin is building there, and it's matches. It is absolutely mind blowing. And it shows you, Jeff says. This is the most important work he's doing is working space. You think this is going to be a big part of his legacy is dedicated Tio spending a billion dollars a year of his own money into it until while they're moving slowly and deliberately. You can't bet against them. And next year could be a big year and it feels like we say that a lot In states like, but we're looking ahead at flying people for the first time in New Shepherd, they said. Today they were maybe a couple of flights away from doing that, And then they also hope to launch their new Glenn vehicle. That's the Big rocket that would eventually go to orbit. Christian Davenport with us on coma. News covers space industry for the Washington Post Christian thanks very much. "Cape Canaveral. Vice President Mike Pence is over there. This is a big deal. We've been telling you how he's going to announce the US space command after this launched. They're going to launch a military satellite up there of now. Now getting word from the NASA from nastiest feed here from the live SpaceX feed as well that they are going to abort this launch. Nonetheless, we have a reporter Darrell Moody out there jetty park, Daryl. We're just getting this word that the launch is is going to be scrubbed for right now. Has the word gotten out there over a jetty park in port Canaveral. Well, actually, yeah. I am seeing some disappointed folks kind of walking off of the rocks are heading back to their cars. Yeah. What's funny is? I've been monitoring SpaceX his Twitter feed all morning, and they haven't said anything about it yet. They just said a few minutes ago that the, you know, the webcast was live. But yeah, you know, they ended up moving the time back about twenty five minutes early this morning for for better. Favourable winds for that played some some role in the scrub. Yeah. That's that's really interesting, Daryl. And and this was gonna be Daryl a different kind of launch. Right. Because it wasn't going to be a typical SpaceX is only thing they were going to land the bar. This was a military satellite that they were going to send up for the you know for for our military here. And this is the first mission of this kind for SpaceX this actual mission. This GPS navigational satellite was originally intended for United launch alliance. Delta four rocket earlier this year, they postponed the launch and. Kind of essentially gave it to SpaceX for them to do. And what would have been different about this launches? They would not have been able to land the rocket afterward. They need to get the rocket in a higher orbit in order to launch that GPS satellite. And because of that they had to put extra fuel on the booster at apparently, the military has some sort of zero space junk policy, so anything that goes up has the burn up on the way down rather than landing on the pad out in the water were on the actual facility here on their own space coast, but nonetheless. Yeah, I'm watching some people. Mosey and back to their cars. Long faces disappointed kids for sure among them myself. Yeah. Me too. Actually, I was getting ready to take you live here right on the radio station. All right. I'll let you get back to talking to some folks out there. That's reporter Darrell Moody out there jetty park in port Canaveral. So yeah, I'm I'm disappointed to deliver. You this breaking news. That SpaceX is is not going to be doing this launch. We're gonna take a break here. And hopefully, we'll figure out when they're going to reschedule this. They are maybe they'll do it later today. We're gonna find out some more details here, it's nine thirty three. A news ninety six point five WDBO. The.

"Space gold, rush, the Trump administration as emphasized a growing role for the private sector in, space exploration and recently. Presented a plan for a sixth military branch dedicated to space Wall Street Journal reporter Arjan Campo. Flores says local and state officials across the US are now trying to get in on the action Arjan what are we seeing a growing number of commercial, space sports. That are being created around the US that are trying to capture part of the growing commercial piece of of space activity so in recent Eight years As the government has kind of pulled back from spending an in an investment out increasingly partners in the. Private sector you've seen the growth of companies like safe x. which is a company that are creating their, own rockets creating their own launch services, and it it made it so that the commercial sector of of of faith economy is the one that is growing. More significant it's still kind, of nascent but that's where there's a lot of. The energy so you have a lot of. Communities ram you want to capture that antidote space ports of the they can provide services and venues for these private companies to operate what's involved in having your own space port Because to some extent when you've got, a private partner you up to that, private partner to decide what kind of infrastructure they want on the ground so some of the new contenders for instance. There's a wine that is, buying to be approved as a spaceport in Camden. County Georgia that for now it's sort of. A blank plate and and their idea is to eventually build that out over time once they figure out who their private. Partners might be and what their needs are You gotta play that is a long established for lunch Facility like a Cape Canaveral Florida to the airport station is there you know that you're talking about a. Region bed has decades of experience sending rockets into space And and it has, a really rich aerospace Got. Quite an a a lot of existing infrastructure and so you have private companies now of trying to develop out areas that. Have been carved, out for for commercial ventures so for instance they have an area that kind of space center where wards and. Is going to build one of its rockets there are other similar events in the which which cities are rolling the dice on this stuff Well so you you have the the one I, mentioned in Camden County Georgia you're not that has proposed creating one there's another one in Adams county Colorado that's also awaiting approval they the plan but that has the license they have others already gotten a but are still in the process of building it out so one example. Of that is Houston space for which was the most recently licensed they're still developing at a network called Ellington field and. So they've built, a new and so it's an existing airport now wants to add this l. space dimension to it a bit. Been partners and of a new air traffic control center that can handle lots of of space And they're now working on developing Another area where they might in the future Private space companies, operated, we're speaking, with Wall Street Journal reporter Aaron couple Flora's and he's written a piece entitled. Across the US the spaceport race is on we're kind. Of, expected growth or we're looking at here well so the the most recent figure for what the global economy is government on. Commercial was close to four hundred.
