"Are thrilled to be joined today by wilderness specialists and the defacto landscape photographer for the bureau of land management bob wick. If you have ever admired the public land's imagery in one of our research reports. Chances are you are looking at a photo taken by bob wick and although bob may not be aware of his rockstar status outside the bureau the center for western priorities and many other conservation organisations rely on his photographs to help us communicate about the importance of public lands across the country. His work has also been featured on postage stamps commemorating america's wild and scenic river system. If you look up any number of blm lands on wikipedia. You probably find bob wick photograph there as well and i have to break the news. Unfortunately that bob is retiring at the end of this month. He agreed to join us here on the podcast to share some insight into why he is so good at what he does. And how he got here in his remarkable career. So bob wick. Welcome to the landscape. Well thanks for having me. And thanks for that very gracious introduction. I really appreciate it. I want to start with the basics. I wanna know how a guy who grew up in western pennsylvania. You're earned two four street degrees in the mid atlantic region. And then you find your way somehow to l. office in canyon city colorado writing wilderness. Study reports. how'd you. How'd you land there. Well you know when i was younger. The four service was kind of the go-to agency for forestry majors. Natural resource specialists and going to school. With both penn state and virginia tech. All of our textbooks would always have this little paragraph with the end of a chapter saying. Oh yeah and there's this. Other federal agency the the vietnam that manages more federal land than any other agency and and they have forced resources to period. That was it now. So it was a totally unknown agency to me But actually when i was in grad school one of my Professors new personnel in canyon city. And they were looking for a temporary and employee and i put in for the position thinking. Wow i always wanted to be out west. I'd never been less than mississippi so landed in colorado right at the tail end of the wilderness study process so It was a great way to go west. I drove my pickup truck out and haven't been back since other than for visits. And when when are we talking about there when you started. This was in march of nineteen eighty eight so over thirty three years ago. So i mean that's one of the things we're going to get to. I think is how the agency has evolved over those years. But start with your work as wilderness specialist. What does your day to day. Life look like working for the agency on wilderness issues. Well right now. I'm i worked for our headquarters office. i've been here for about seven years now but i've I only took the job on the condition that i could stay out west back when our headquarters was in dc. So i've always been based out of sacramento. But i did a lot of trouble shooting whenever problems. Come up with field offices or state.

"It is absolutely securing our border and making sure just one thing that happened recently is securing the border so that we don't have an influx of covert cases coming in from other countries that would overflow our hospitals. That's just one little example. But it's but exemplifies the president's strategy of securing our border, protecting American jobs and making sure that our communities are safe and prosperous. Going forward. Let's talk about covert for a second. It seems that the president's messages look a virus going virus. That's what we've been saying here on our show, Brian and It's treating the American people like adults or his feels like the other side wants toe. Put all these controls on us and limit our movement Linda, but our behavior where's that fine line that you guys are trying to strike? Well, if the president has taken measures to make our country better off than it was before, in terms of Cove it he shut down the travel from China. He set up a task force of experts with a diverse set of experiences. He's used the Defense production act and related authorities over 100 times. To make sure there is pee pee everywhere in this country that it needed. We have surged personnel and hospital capacity when it's needed. Every American who needed a ventilator got a ventilator. Now with Operation works speed. We have treatments so they were able to dramatically reduce the risk of this virus so that if someone is unfortunately contracting it, we're able to treat them and they go home healthy. On and soon we're gonna have a vaccine five times faster than we have ever gotten a vaccine before, and it will be reviewed by an independent board of scientists so that we know it will be safe and effective. The president's actions have really been, Ah, ah, terrific demonstration of what you get with a businessman president who's not hindered by the bureaucracy. He cut through it and he gets results. He throws everything at a problem to solve it as quickly as possible. And he just wants to empower the American people. Look, you have the guidelines, you know howto wear your mask and distance and wash your hands and all of that. And now we have treatments for the disease. And soon soon we're gonna have a vaccine. But he wants the American people to be optimistic about our future. We are going to put this behind us. We're going to reopen our economy and tomorrow we're going to be stronger than we are today. Special assistant to the president Brian Morgenstern. One final question for you Tell us something about President Trump that gets under reported, Ms reported or the media ignores whatsoever because we know they're all in on a win for Biden, but what's she like behind the scenes? Oh my gosh. He is such an optimistic, funny person who has common sense, and he's really the voice of common sense for our country. I think what you see so frequently is his sense of humor. His sarcasm is Comments that when you're in the room, it's clear. Everyone is laughing and having a good time. And then they're misinterpreted in the press, as though he said something, you know, horribly offensive. It's ridiculous, but a non sense of humor press. Yeah, no, absolutely humoring the humorless truth ruin all the fun. The president has one of the best of the viewers I've ever been around. He is an absolute blast. He's a joyful person who loves our country. I think I just want the American people to see that as much as possible. Well, you have a breakneck 48 hours coming up coming up heavy. "With your humidifier you wanted hooked up the hot water not cold because hot water evaporates warm more quickly than In cold water. So yeah, I think that's that's that's the story. They're now that that's why and I'm sure you probably do this. But it's worth repeating that which by that water tank is some distance away from My kitchen's think so Whenever I'm going to start the dishwasher, I make sure I run water to the kitchen faucet, so it's really hot As it begins. You see what I'm saying. But that's kind of the reason. I think Okay. I just want a good because, Yeah, Jenner the impression you know when the winner it's always your hot water pipes of free because cold water takes longer to freeze in hot water. And hot and hot water. If you put hot water on the stove boil, it actually takes longer to boiled and cold water because of the physics behind it, the air I don't I don't think that's true. I think if you really hot water it doesn't take long to boil. It is stone cold water, I think Because it because it doesn't have you know you're trying to get to in our elevation here about 198 F 200 something like that. So if you're already starting at 1 20, it's going to take less time to get to 200 of your starting with 50 degree water, which is kind of the water that comes out of our pipe. City water means it's about 52 Year round because our water mains are very deep. Ah, very deep here. So there's some practical reasons I think for the head. Yeah, that's I mean, that's a good question. But and I hope you have as I do my dishwasher. I don't have a real fancy one. But it's a nice Frigidaire. There's a button for hot water rinse and hot water wash. And if you push those buttons, then there's you indicate that heating element will come on. And I think what it does it takes your incoming 120 degree water 130. Whatever it is. And boost that up to maybe 150 or 60. So the Washington is you know, with sterilizing is taking place with really hot water. So That's kind of the story. Thanks for your call. Appreciate it. Good to hear from you down there in Canyon City. This is from Alice. I live in a smaller, older home. I get lots of condensation and even ice around my windows. In fact, I've had to replace them all, even run a dehumidifier, But I still have a problem. I'm worried about it. This coming winter. Any other ideas? I think you may have a ventilation issue. We need to get this solved because you don't want a lot of excess humidity in the house because you get mold. You know, you don't want mold or fungi. That's another. Version of mold. I guess mold is a fungus. You don't want those in your house it all so you need to check the attic and crawl spaces. Those the most likely culprits that maybe they're under ventilated and you're getting Crawlspace moisture coming up through the soil. Maybe the there's bath fans blowing into the attic, which you shouldn't do by the way and there's just humidity from the house that tends to leak into the attic. Also, if these areas aren't Well ventilated. Then the humidity builds up and I've seen addicts not very often, thankfully. Or the trusses and the and the roof. Sheeting under the shingles is real dark colored because we're getting moisture in their beginning to form mould, and so you want to make sure that the crawl spaces well insulated. And the attic is well insulated. Also check the bath and kitchen fans. Make sure the event directly to the outside of just talked about that. And they're actually used when? When showering or preparing food. I'm uh, I'm concerned about this because you say you have a dehumidifier here on the high arid Western Plains. That's very unusual indicates excessive moisture in your house. You've got to get to the bottom of this because you might be getting mold accumulating in the wall cavities and those kinds of things. So you really have some detective work to do here, but I would start with ventilating. Addict spaces. Usually they're a little under ventilated because we want to save energy at all costs, But we there's some negative payback. You try to save too much energy by closing up at events and you have excessive moisture buildup. Same thing in crawl spaces. You want all of your crawlspace vents open all summer long and in the winter, you would still want to leave one or two open because you always need some air circulating through those spaces. Make sure your crawlspace dirt has Plastic on it. Also, that's a big deal. But I would get to the bottom of this. If you have to use a dehumidifier. There is something wrong, Alice. It's your house, and I think you need to find out what.

"Than 15 minutes away from today's top stories on Arizona's news station News Corona virus in Arizona. So Jamie just mentioned those businesses that have been closed down by the governor. Health clubs. You know Jim's bars, movie theaters, waterparks tubing. Ah, and before they could even apply To reopen what's called a moderate level of community spread. Has to be met in the county. They do business. Guess what? There are only two counties in Arizona that are in that. What's noticed The moderate level of community spread is defined by the state of Arizona as 100 or fewer cases of covert 19 per 100,000 county residents. A percent positivity rate of between five and 10% of Corona virus test and a covert like illness rate of between five and 10%. In other words, of all the hospital visits that occur within a county on ly 10% or fewer, Khun B of an illness that looks like it could be Right. So once again, 100 or fewer cases of covert 19 per 100,000 county residents percent positivity rate of testing of between five and 10% and hospital is a East Hospital visits have to be 10% or fewer. For illnesses that look like they could be covert. All right, state health director Dr Cara Chris says. Guess what? The Phoenix metro area the valley of the Sun. Wait there yet. We're still above that 10% threshold for percent positivity. It looks like we're getting down closer, but we're still above the case rate as well. By the way you can read about each individual county. If you go to Katie our dotcom. I got a story specifically on each Arizona County that lays it out. But Maricopa and Panel counties, the two counties I considered to make up the valley. Both have what's known as a substantial Community spread, so no closed. Businesses can even begin the re opening process. The county currently meet zero of the three benchmarks but here Krista also tells us that we are trending in the right direction for all three. So the question is, Where can it happened? Right now, and only to Arizona counties want take a guess, Jamie, because, you know, Arizona reward you take a guess. Just the two counties just just try and pick one of the two was a one of the two was like, Thanks for putting me on the spot. I'm going to say Greenlee, no La Paz, which might be even less known Greenlee County. It's on the Colorado River. It's just north of Human County has a population of about 21,000. They have moderate community spread so they can apply for indoor fitness centers, bars, nightclubs, providing dining services, indoor theaters, waterparks into being facilities to re open the other county. Interestingly, is one that a lot of people would say At least the Southern part of this county is part of the Valley. You have a pie. Oh, really? How do you see the press kit? So they have what's known as moderate community spread. Ah, lot of people on whiskey row are going to be happy to hear this right because I know that's not the only economic driver for you have a Pike County, but you've got to figure it's at least a major economic right. And when I was still a drinking man, it was really a massive, You know, economic driver for you have a bike and Ah, but Yeah. Black Canyon City is in. You have a pike County so close. What do you think? Mountainside, Fitness, Black Canyon City location there, and I bet people would drive that everybody's going to go there to drink and work out. I guess. There you go there. Is there any tubing? In Black Canyon City on, um, check on that somebody. Maybe Mike strove to throw together a water park in there like a dead man's culture. Something like that. I'll tell you that's what we've been trying to do in our backyard is trying to set up a water park to keep the kids occupied. 5 48 Now for Entertainment News with Stacy Brooks is brought to you by Body Fi, Arizona's premiere Cool sculpting provider.

Like she would back in back in those days there was there was this attitude of like I'm GonNa. Just have my fun, and then of course I'm going to get married to a guy you know that was. That was not an uncommon You know sort of EXC. Modality back in those days, or at least it wasn't uncommon here in Colorado where where I the community that I found myself in. That was sort of a thing people. I guess but For me as soon as I finally got it. I was not going back like for me. I was not going. I was never going to go back But for shelley she had started earlier with her with her other relationships with women and stuff, and always dated men, but always kind of had a girlfriend on the side you know. That sort of thing back in the ninety S. Eighty. So. It just wasn't as accepted it back. Then it just it was not. It wasn't cool yet. It wasn't like. It wasn't it wasn't anything it was still very. It was it was eighty S. it was the nineties, so it was really different But You know. I was always. All in you know always all in as far as you know. Going back to having a boyfriend wasn't even like on the table for me. It was purchased I'm I'm gay for Shelley? Now. But I'm a moderate and for sure. Like? There was all these reasons to be gay like all these political reasons and social reasons like reactionary reasons like Maybe you mended this to you or it's reaction. Of like not man. For me, it was not that it was like going towards something absolutely going towards something, and then like finally once I got in bed with a woman which was showing I was like. This is what I always suspected I was missing and. That that sort of thumb. that. It was just like A. One hundred percent. Yes, for me like yeah, this is it. It wasn't like. You know because I was. People who were trying to make it about something else and I was like now now it's about it's about naked girl. Yes players that yeah. How were you with the cultural aspects? Did you feel when you walked to ask? Like for me, that was an added bonus like you had this like club. You were suddenly and in the sisterhood, and I loved it, and especially up here because we were you know there was there. Was this really really amazing group of just Hardcore Mountain Lesbians up here. That's suddenly I was cool enough to even just sort of be in that room with them and just revered them. They're just like really amazing. Women too strong, fierce, athletic, bad ass! Mountain women appeared that. Are Ed we're all just friends with each other. Because they all dated each other, it was really incestuous at the time I. missed all that because they were older, but You know it was just a really super cool group to suddenly be accepted into that was also part of the allure of it was was the community also you know? And then I went to a pride like sometimes when I would be dumped and single I I got a puppy like I got this puppy once when shelley hit dumped me, and his name is, Harvey and I loved Him Oh my God I love this. He was a white Chihuahua had for years. But one time like when he was a baby, I went to pride with a best friend Maryann. She see, I ended up in college. Having a roommate who ended up being a lesbian, so she she came out first, and I was like Oh. My God, Oh my God! My roommate's a lesbian, but I was like so repressed, even though I had sort of like come out to myself in high school I just couldn't believe my luck of like. Big. You, know suddenly in this in this roommate situation with a girl who just happened to? Have this lesbian past you know, and and she she she had gone to an all girls Catholic school and Creighton. Canyon City Colorado. And had an affair with one of the nuns drought is. I know it was so illicit and so raised. She's wild woman, and and so she was my really good friend, and she's still my best friend Maryann she. So she she started. She was dating men when we met, but then she started like. Not Wanting to tell me, but she started seeing women again. What is going on with you and she was like okay I'm seeing this girl. And then I went to this lesbian. Party with her and I was totally freaked out and. It. It was a long journey like coming out was just a long journey. There was a long long trajectory of me going my God. Oh my God you know gay people I was just raised on a ranch. You know what I mean so like to to be. To be out to myself was just mortifying mortifying it was it wasn't even. It wasn't. A small thing. It was like to sort of come out incrementally to everyone who has ever known me as a child. You know it was just such a big deal because because of where I came from. Holy Cow! That's kind of a fantasy scenario in ways. Stories, yes. I know it's not the point, but I do need an update on the none as she. Oh. She left the order she she didn't for the best. Yes, she. She wasn't actually was a novice. She wasn't a full-on none and. She had had A. Physical relationship with a few of the girls. Athletic Girls School in Canyon City Colorado and Canyon City Colorado. Too small small town really, Catholic. City is. It's like by saliva. Don't. You don't know where but who's from boulder. Who was from Bob was right, maybe was. Producer. Oh, I'm talking to you guys like you know Colorado near Ryan. Brian. Let's show your so yourself. You know where Canyon City is right..

"Here at Sam's garage. I'm Sam with Ms Emma Davi. We're talking to Richard about a fifty nine rambler retired. Let me let me make it a little easier for you on that generator. Polarity of the battery generator an alternator together. There's another easy way to do it. A friend of mine just texted me this and he thought he does it all the time. The key off the with the key often the engine not running a wire and go from the Amish terminal on the generator battery positive. I'd go to the battery positive. I put an alligator clip on that. Take you just touched the amateur channel on the generator there might be a small arc. That's why you want to do it at the generate or not at the top of the battery and then that will polarize it and if it doesn't run then you gotta probably got a bad regulator. Okay I I would be. That'd be support. I guess yeah just another way to match the polarity of the two. But you know what I was GonNa say we got to the top the break one of the things that I hate it on that. Rambo was changing the oil filter in front of the engine upside down on this areas filter. Oh you don't have. The Dow is an option by the way I do believe but that was an option. It was mounted on a steel plate on the driver's side of the valve cover at the very front of the head and it had a little copper tube that went down into the oil gallery and it had a spin on filter. And you had to hold the not underneath or when you turn the filter. If it was stuck it would twist the copper line. You break the line. You don't have an oil filter on. There wasn't oil filter option on that car. That was a spin on felted. That's pretty interesting. You don't have one but it's a great little card front seats recline all the way. You could sleep in that car. O out where where where Putting the headline ran right now boy. That's been a a job and a half but Where we got that done yesterday. It looks pretty decent for a bunch of Hicks like putting them in but the bows the bow that slide through the little loops that are stitched into the head last. Yes we had to pull them down and split them so you could pull it tight OOFTA. Anyway it's a job. Yeah but you'll however windows. Yes it's been fun but we're a wave The owners where it's a birthday present and the owners wanted three months early so We're we're pushing for pushing ourselves pretty hard on this thing but we're gonNA have done for having to the person that before you give it to the person's going to drive it. Make sure in the front and you check the check. The trend they had trauma with the break in the wheel would fall off those. I did a lot of those so take a look at those trying to make sure they're tight. Oh well now. We went through the whole front. And that's all for Hindu. We were able to put new yards for all of that Oakland. He wants to turn key. And that's what we're working for. Let me know when you're finished? I got a couple of cars shipped here. You can finish Palm House. That could've sixty six. We gotta sixty six or three ninety automatic that we got big plans for the next one. Okay Oh Listen. Thanks for the call. Good luck with your project and we'll talk to you again longtime listener. Sam Thank you very much. Thank you. Bye-bye Cedeno audio man knew about all those things he didn't that oil felt that was an option back. Then did you know that I knew options and stuff? I just didn't know when you know. Even your Chevrolet Stove Bolt Sixes. Some of them didn't have oil filters and and some of them had this big canister fell to that they put you bolts through the manifold intake. Manifold was bolted to the side of the intake mantle and then the line went down and picked up a fitting on the oil gallery. It Fed the filter in and you know back in the day. They used to use rolls of toilet paper in there for filter. That's crazy wondering why you'll record your cars every week. Well Oil was good for a thousand miles. You really and truly people don't understand if they haven't been around a long time like I have. Your maintenance was thousand miles. You got an oil change and if you had a healthy a change that and then you know we had points in the points rubbing block used to wear the points would burn when the rub in block wear and the points would get closer the dwell would change and that also affected the timing which is why when you did a tune up. The carranza much better had retarded time in one plugs. Bad caught bad spot. She put a point set of points in the condenser in it. Kaplan and or if it needed a new set of plugs set the time and right make sure vacuum incentive look advance worked just a carburetor usually one screw one vacuum line and away. You went but you did that. Every twelve thousand miles. Yeah but you guys. Don't drive off in like Dr Today. You know they won't yeah. They didn't and I grew up in a city. So you didn't go anyway. You know all right. Let's go to Canyon City Colorado and talk to randy about a fuel system added Randy Good morning on and welcome to the show. Thanks very much for both. Well an thr- apologists are excited about the rediscovery of an apple variety that was believed to be extinct. We asked him what makes it so special so the Colorado oranges a mix of sweet and tart being a winter apple. The flavor opens up over time so winner apples like the Colorado orange. You wouldn't even think of starting to eat until Christmas. You'd go through all your summer apples all your fall apples. You'd have these in the root cellar. And then starting Christmas. You'd start to pull these out and month by month. The flavor would open up a little bit of the suite would go a little bit of the. Tang might but they were still going to be very flavorful. They have some of the most complex flavors of any apples. You'll ever have. They said culinary have some of the most complex flavors you'll ever have anything. The Colorado Orange was popular in the late eighteen hundreds but around the nineteen forties. It started to disappear the biggest thing it had going against. It was a yellowish wish. Orangish glow apple at a time when America was going into monoculture where shiny red apples were considered the only apples worth buying. It wasn't because it was bad quality or didn't grow. Well it lost out like so many of the thousands and thousands of apple varieties that have gone extinct. It lost out because it wasn't the Shiny Red Apple Shanta Shanta Myer says locals around Canyon City Colorado cherished the Orange Apple. They knew it was a really high quality apple winner Apple. Good Keeping Apple in in Canyon. City of the memory of it was kept alive for a long time in the old timers. Like Oh yeah. I used to have a tree at died but we kept thinking there was still going to be one around we. We felt like we could still find one and so he and his wife. ADDIE started combing the state two years ago. We were in Canyon City in this orchard in December. And this person Mr Diana said. Hey I've got a tree also and he took us to a tree my wife. Addie and I looked at it and Lo and behold on the ground underneath the tree and the duff there were. These orange blushed apples apples and then on the tree. There were some of the apple still hanging and it had that really good sub acid flavorful. Taste that you'd expect from a winner apple so yeah it was a it was a a big moment for us. But the Shannon Myers have been careful and taking their time. They did cutting edge. DNA testing and compared their find to some archival wax apple full replicas at Colorado State University. They wanted to make sure they'd found the actual orange apple of memory because it's considered extinct. There's probably never in absolute but we've got his close to an absolute as we can between this newest new DNA technology the historical purvey of the orchard itself in and the waxed apple to compare it to. That's an extraordinary amount of information that most people would never be able to have to compare anything and so in a couple of years once the a young trees get going. Keep Your Eyes Open in the produce section for something new and please restrain yourself from asking. Ju- Shanta Meyer about mixing apples apples and oranges. Yeah people when they hear of the Colorado Orange. They definitely wonder what we're talking about. That's for
