"So james i have to. I was a little caught off guard last week when nhl ruled out the playoffs schedule. I was like week. The games are starting this weekend. What's the thinking behind the nhl jumping into the playoffs. So quickly here well. They're trying to move as fast as they possibly can. Because they've got some deadlines on the other end. The nhl had a number of shutdowns with the pandemic due to covid absences for different teams and that of structure schedule a longer than they wanted it to. And there's time pressure because nbc is obviously the rights holder in the us. They've got the olympics this summer. They really wanna get the nhl playoffs astounding out of the way before the olympic start. So there's this window where they got to cram as many games as they can so they didn't waste any time getting started. Well one of the outcomes of this relatively quick playoff start is at the vancouver canucks who had a bad covert outbreak earlier. This year are still playing regular season games even though the playoffs have already started their in what appears to be a completely meaningless. Three-game series against the calgary flames. So are you or is anyone planning to watch those games. I don't think the ratings will be very good. No it's this never happened before in. Nhl history one hundred and three years of history for the league and they never had anything like this happened before they have tv rights agreements. That are a lot of money advertising agreements that are a lot of money and they didn't want to get new situation where they were shortchanging those media partners. And we're going to have to pay some money back because sure you know it's been a tough situation for the league revenue wise. They're down three and a half billion dollars from where they normally would be as as an entity as a league. They're trying to make sure that they can play out the season. COVID-19 outbreak pauses Vancouver Canucks' season
"Elliott firstly before we do anything on this podcast. Let's just all send our best to everyone in the vancouver canucks organization. Everybody around the nhl feels awful at what the vancouver canucks are going through right now and elliott as we tape this podcast record this podcast On a sunday evening. What is the very latest with this ongoing situation. Well look the covert list expanded again. On sunday night sixteen players listed on it. And you know we should mention that just because you're on it doesn't mean you have it but one of the things that the nhl has basically assumed here is that it's going to go through everyone and even if it doesn't and you hope it doesn't you automatically assume it does and that's the way they look at it when it was going through dallas. That's the way they looked at it. When was going through buffalo. And you know there's been some debate about white symptoms. That players did or didn't have. I'm not getting into that. I think that's crazy. I think that what we have here is that we know it's the variant The brazilian variant. We know there's a player jas horlock who had covert originally last march and now has it again. So there's a lot of things to be concerned about here. We know that not everybody had symptoms. We know that some had symptoms more severe than others and that the ones who did have the severe symptoms. Unfortunately they went through an awful lot. Like basically what i've heard. Is that the roughest outbreak in terms. Of what the players went through generally considered to be buffalo's i think for those players who did have symptoms. Those are must wins. Honestly they have to win these games against you know below average teams 'cause by the end of this month they're going to finally get star getting tested again You know they're gonna have the bruins they're gonna have the flyers they're going to have the penguins you know. The penguins are the tough team for them right now. They can't beat them. I mean obviously they just shot him out the other night. But that was only when i think about like five matchups thirty. So they're going to be tested. And i guess it's good that they're getting their confidence getting their groove going but they're gonna have to find a way to transition that game so these tough ones and just stay. Stay at the same pace. I mean everybody's playing great everley scoring goals washrooms. Doing great dobson's really stepping off for their team or zell as normal. You know he's carrying spock's he's having phenomenal plays like there's so many times where he has puck initials going around and there's only like how does he still have the puck on his stick. At least they're winning underscoring goals. So i'm excited. Man i really am and i hope it's not gonna let me down but I'm very excited. These past two weeks have been really good for them. They've been playing really well so i feel like you. You took that not fun comment to heart. I do i always. I've always felt that. "It's exciting it's when he's out on the ice and you can tell from the beginning that he was going to be really great I know they kind of gave the keys to bellows. I and kind of fumbled it a little bit. And now he's not playing and walsham kinda really took that lead and he kind of really took a kind of took the spotlight for the rookies for the islanders. And i'm glad it's him and i'm glad that he's playing really well and honestly i don't i don't really think you really wanna touch the offense right now. Which is crazy say normally. I've been screaming that we do want to go score but if wash could continue the type of player he's have has right now and continue developing on his game and come time for the playoffs. And you know if the momentum's going in the way of the islanders. I think wall street is going to be that guy for us Especially down in the bottom six You know i'm sure they might be able to plug him up higher if ever needed just great prayer and he actually says something the other day about how He's not really out there looking for goals. How he's working on the little things. I was working on the chip battles always working on all these little exciting parts of the game. He calls them and how it's just falling in his favor. I don't really know how to feel about it. Because i don't really know the science behind removing the glass behind the benches and are now putting further restrictions on players going to facilities before two games and stuff like that and they're they're putting in special filters on the benches way to clear the air and stuff like that. And what the government's trying to do to keep that contained in terms of effectively shutting down pretty significant sectors of our economy You know the hospitality industry is gone. anything that relies on social consumption so a lot of businesses headdresses petitions. The canucks very significant swipe at the economy. And so we need this government package in order to support the businesses during what is going to be a very shop. It comes down to it. That's where the government's getting its health advice from an economic perspective. I think it's important to realize that we cannot prop every business in in the country. You know Macaroni France. Basically said we won't let a single business go bankrupt. That would be a stike. We're looking at a potentially protracted shut down in the economy with significant economic impacts. And we need to be smart in strategic about how we deploy our resources. The government doesn't have an unlimited budget. Econ prop up. Everyone and it shouldn't try and provide support to everyone. What it needs to do is target. It's assistance to the areas most in need to the people most in need and ensuring that when we come out the other side of this whereas applies to as we can be to get coming out on the other side of this means massive deficits as far as the. I can see and that would imply a substantial future tax increase crosses. Maybe as soon as next she wouldn't that retired the recovery. Right now yes it waiting for that we go substantial debt to pay off the government will hopefully find a path to do that in a way that will not hit the the economy is coming out of the what happens if the pandemic lasts into the winter and early. Spring Salmon Cowan that the CLEM will be for another round and then another round of high levels of government spending. Is that really sustainable? Well it's an interesting question Australia's coming into these spots. A lot of people were not an is good spot as wearing two thousand night. It will take its level of debt individuals who have resources businesses who have resources we should encourage them to access those resources as well One good example. These we have caught a good deal of money in superannuation that could be used to support people in the short term. It's not going to be a complete substitute for an expanded welfare system in this cross but it could take some of the pressure off the system at a point in time where we don't know how long this will last Danielle.
