"The weak link sport is hockey. It's soccer. If your bottom end of your roster to your mid end of your roster is no good, it doesn't matter if you've got the best player. You never get the puck. They can only impact the game so much. Messy can only impact the game so much. Playing soccer. So, yeah, McDavid can lead. You need to stronger, stronger lengths around him. I don't have any question. All right, to Twitter, Chris is asking, what do we think of Dawson Mercer? Have we seen enough of this young guy to submit that? He should be talked about more in terms of the Calder trophy for rookie of the year or is it too soon? Well, I don't know about for The Rookie of the year, but I think the Devils have an NHL player for a decade. That kid can play anywhere. He's smart, he's got good size. He's got good hands. Drakes, when we were doing the world juniors the last couple of years, the coaches just raved about the fact they could play him anywhere in the lineup. The problem is, when you can play anywhere in the lineup, you don't really play one place. Right. And in a short tournament, he never really had one place. He kind of got like bounced here and there he was a band aid all over the place. He goes to Jersey and you're like, that kid's good. I watched him in LA. I did a game out there for ESPN ten days ago when man, he's a noticeable player already. All right, here's a fun one from max on Twitter, right? Max says, I always love watching ray chuckled between the benches. As guys throw the chirps back and forth. So max is asking, what is one of the funniest interactions you have ever heard, right? Player to player coach to player, coach your coach. And is anyone ever called you out after overhearing you break down their play? We'll start with that. First off the answers yes. I was Roman Pollock took a penalty. You can find this on YouTube. He took a penalty and then came back to the bench. And as it so happened, I was reviewing the penalty because they scored a power play goal and Roman is sitting like right beside me and there was no glass between the bench and white position in those days. He was sitting on the half boards and he was looking and I'm like, and you can see clearly the penalty. And he was shaking his head and going, no, no, no, no. He was just like giving it to me. I was so rattled because he was. He was listening to everything I said. Another example is we're doing a game in LA and Alex adlers had just a terrible first period..

"But I think there's good odds on them and for the first time in a long time, the leaves, as you mentioned, aren't the favorite Canadian tea. There are ten to one, and their team that despite a slow start throughout didn't really move that much. And now that they're starting to round into form and I think we can say they've got a number one goaltender, ten to one for once in my life, I'm going to say, it's not a bad, not bad odds to get in on the Toronto maple leaf right now. Now, the National Football League is traditionally unpredictable, especially this time of year. But does it feel like it's more unpredictable from a betting perspective now than it's been in past years? Well, we all know that we can get sucked in with recency bias. But I mean, this last kind of three week stretch has been, you know, it is what the NFL tends to be though. You have Brady get embarrassed in New Orleans. Okay, he's going into a biweek. He's going to come out of the bay. He's going to be dominant. Well no, he wasn't. And now everyone's wondering if Tom Brady's done. Well, no, I don't think Tom Brady's done. You know, the Aaron Rodgers he's going to come back. You know, he hasn't played for two weeks. What's his team going to think about him? Well, his defense is going to pitch a shout out against Russell Wilson and they're going to cover the spread easily. So it has been topsy turvy, the Jags, jumping up and biting buffalo last week. So the only thing I can say is that at some point, I think this run on underdogs has to end. I mean, they're hitting that like 60% or more. Usually evens itself out throughout the year. So at some point here, and we saw it a little bit last week with big covers by buffalo and by Kansas City. At some point, the cream will rise to the top. So you're probably for the next few weeks going to get some pretty good lines on teams that should win. So maybe that's somewhere to focus on. Last one for me. Did you have much action on Canada soccer yesterday? Because that one man phenomenal. That was so cool. I mean, we're soccer country now, right? Not only the national team, we've got our piles that in the white caps ray going for the going from the playoffs against Kansas City this weekend. Big underdogs, but they've been on quite a run since the coaching shake up midseason. So good money to be made on the white cast. But yeah, to have the entire country focused in on that Canada and Mexico match last night. We did take a lot of action on Canada. But we did we did also have a lot of people come back saying Mexico is an underdog. Well, I get to get it on that too. They lost, but did even out our risk a little bit. We're super happy for the boys and can't wait to see what's next. And ironically had a PR email come in this morning saying, would you like to take any of your customers to Doha in 2022? So I've got to look into that. Good stuff, Chris man. Got a mixed bag, right? It's that kind of week. Everything from soccer to curling to football, a little bit of hockey, sifted in, so we're looking forward to it. Thanks for joining us as always. Oh, thanks for having me on guys..

"It's nice when a player fits in, right? And I was glad you asked him about that because he had he acknowledged. He has bounced around the National Hockey League yet. He looks like a perfect compliment to what's going on with the Panthers. He really does. I was really impressed with him saying, look, I just wanted to take a hold of my career. Yeah. And I wanted to talk to the general managers because, you know, he felt some of the stories about him and the way that he played and maybe the reason that he bounced around or weren't fact. And he wanted to tell them himself. And it's quite frankly, as I told him, it's more courageous than I could have been. To start calling up general managers, you know, and yes, he had a team with him, but he's still on the phone. Doing that part of the job. And, you know, I go back to when he was in Columbus and, you know, he was in the lineup. He was out of the lineup. And John tortorella was his coach and Ford told me he goes, I love duke. I just want him to score more. Like, it wasn't that they didn't think he worked hard or he didn't try. That wasn't it. And I think that was part of the narrative that Anthony duclair wanted to clear up with with general managers is that no, no, I do put the work in. I am better than this. I will be better. And now he looks like I think he looks like he's in a perfect place. I really do. Agreed. Range, right, season three episode 8, presented by infinity continues. So, you know, with whatever happens, you know, that's happened before, and whatever is going to adversity obstacle that's going to happen in the future. I think we're pretty well prepared to face those challenges head on. Excellent. Well, I have to let you go, we really appreciate you taking the time with Florida Panthers are a fun group to watch. So continue on with it. And perhaps we'll check back to you later in the season. For sure. Thanks for having me on guys. Appreciate it. We would like to raise a glass to answer you declare for joining us today presented by our friends at Canadian club whisky. And before we talk about Anthony, ray, you and I had the privilege of going to a Canadian club whisky tasting recently and Toronto. Katie and the group was a great experience. And we learned a lot, right? And we've both enjoyed the 43 year old compliments of Canadian club, but we got the sneak taste, the early taste on the 44 year old. How good was that? Unbelievable. It was so cool to taste the different years and how, you know, someone who's just learning like me, how you can actually taste a little bit different from year to year. The 44 was unbelievable. Yeah. You know what we learned to? The fusel oil stuff, right? Remember dish telling us, you know, one of the great qualities of Canadian club, if you choose to over indulge, in a safe and apartment. So he because you're not going to get a hangover because all the fusel oils have been removed, so you learn something new. And see, you pick up a little knowledge. We add a little tasting dinner. We had tasted the as well, the four different years. Oh, man, it was awesome. I never had drank whisky before. No. Never even really sipped it much. And then started to learn and I'm now enjoying it. I really like it. And I'm lucky that Canadian club is helping us out. Talk a little bit about Anthony to Clare, man. I mean, we could spend a lot of time zeroing in on player by player with the Florida Panthers based on their start, including the goaltender Sergey bobowski. We didn't really get a chance to talk much. To ask the about that..

"Years old. You're basically in your prime from an NHL standpoint, not saying that you've tipped off or anything. Florida's your 6th NHL team. So you jumped right into the national heart league with the New York rangers from the Quebec ramp part of the QM JL. So if you think back through all your experience here, what would a 26 year old Anthony declare tell that teenager way back in the day when you first made the leap into the NHL? Yeah, a lot of things. The main thing is probably not to get too down on myself. Because I do get a tendency to put too much pressure on myself and that affects my game. Let's say, when I was younger, I have a bad chef and I would just carry over the next and then the next and then next thing you know, you have a bad game. Now I have a bad chef. I just shake it off right away and you just open the next one. I think that's the main thing I tell myself and like I said before all the offline stuff. I mean, I couldn't really know back then. What I needed to do, what I didn't need to do, but I mean, I think just working smarter, obviously, is something that I learned over the years. Now you got equals already. You're off to a great start with some, as you mentioned, you play with great players. Like when you're on the ice with bark off and you know, what does that look like? Those guys are so good and you get to skate and free up ice. It must must almost be like, man, this is like the best spot. Yeah, it's great. It's so much easier to play the game to be honest. It's incredible. The Washington guys play. I take notes off these guys in practice. I learned from these guys, even though the same age, these guys make unbelievable place. Dan and Dale. You know, all you got to do is get open, you know, I got to use my speed, use my legs just to get an open spot and they'll finally pretty lucky to build some chemistry, especially with barky over the last year. And now, you know, obviously he's all now playing with hubie, but, you know, it's just so fun because our vision is really off the charts. You know, we kind of think like and maybe in different situations. And maybe another team is, you know, I didn't have those type of players, obviously, the playlist so, you know, you kind of have to work harder to make plays and sometimes just a place during there just because, you know, you just don't have that chemistry or you're just not finding each other. And like you said before, just Florida's been such a great fit for me. And just really happy to be playing with those guys. Now, just without getting into too much like you guys had to make a switch and coaches this year with Joel grenville and now to enter brunette, who I played with in Atlanta. By the way, he was as slow a skater when he played as he was now. It's the same thing. That's the same piece he's got right now. What's Rubin like behind the band for you? Yeah, he's been great to be honest, you know, he really, you know, put that stuff behind us..

"All right, we're now joined on The Rain Drake's hockey podcast by Anthony declare of the Florida path. There's man Anthony. What a story. You and the Florida Panthers are out of the gate, this regular season. So you lead the National Hockey League, is it natural evolution of how this team has been constructed? Everything that's gone on, the work that's been put in or what do you think has contributed or fueled the start for Florida this year? I think it went back to being last year. Last year, a lot of new faces in that locker room came in. They didn't really know what to expect to be honest. As a group, our expectations of whatnot, but we kind of shocked ourselves a little bit, talk the league and kind of roll with it, then we had a great start to the season last year. And we just figured out that we're actually a really good hockey team and we can do special things here. And just we had that confidence throughout the whole year last year. And it kind of moved over all over the off season picking up some some key guys and we're just boosting up our lineup. And obviously with coming to training camp, we had a lot more expectation from our group. And we expect a lot of ourselves as well. So we're really happy with how we started. And, you know, I just think we're just a confident group right now. And also the over the situation with, you know, not being able to go out and stuff like that and just being on the road and understanding what the boys and you know, you just, you know, build some chemistry off the ice and I think that translates on the earth as well. Now for you, you came from Ottawa and it seems like being a perfect fit for you. And so you score 23 goals in Ottawa. You're a free agent and you decide you're going to be your own agent, which I think at the time I'm like, what is he doing? What made you think you could do? I would have never had the courage, Anthony, to do that. Like what I was playing. I would have like, I just, I don't think I could do this. Like, what made you think that was the right play? Because it looks like you landed just where you're supposed to be. Yeah, I honestly it's been run through my mind about being my own jabs for years now. I always wanted to do it. I just felt like last year was the right time with.

"I mean, the sky seems to be falling around the New York monitors, but is it really as bad as it is being portrayed? 500 or close to 500 after 13 games on the road is a God awful is it? No. No, they're fine. I mean, they're disappointed very trots isn't very happy with the way they played the tail end of the trip. And even though Drake wasn't 13 games in a role where they were out and never went home. I mean, they got home a little bit here and there. But where's it down mentally when you're on the road all the time? You lose sharpness, you lose energy. And so the end of this trip was pretty ugly for them. Like they got pumped in Florida pretty good on Tuesday night. I think that's pretty predictable. I thought if they could just kind of stay in touch with the pack, they'd be fine once they got home. Don't you think your game can and now you're starting to see all the pictures and things from the new building. Like you start looking ahead. And in sports, when you look ahead, that means you're not where your feet are. And when you're not where your feet are, you're not very successful and I think they got predictably they got flat, no played, and now they're 5 6 and two coming home. I mean, they've got to be better. I think they will. There is some concern. I mean like they bring in Zidane or char on a one year deal. And he's not Nick Lenny. I mean, you know, ladies are transporter. He can really skate. You know, he was a big part of their team. No adoption to young guy that they had to throw a lot more responsibility for two. He was a scratch last night. So they're bouncing around a little bit, but I'm not walking away from that team yet. All right, our interview with Anthony duclair rained Riggs is brought to you by our good pals at Canadian club whisky who are asking are you over beer? Why not try a refreshing CC, Ginger ale,.

"It would bug me, I think. Yeah. I think I would be, you know, like, hey, how about over here, you know? Like, I'm pretty good too, no? You know, like, because no matter what Leon does, it always is, yeah, but he's also playing with McDavid. Well, of course, it's an indisputable fact. But McDavid's also playing with dry Seidel. There's a lot of passes that go across for the one timer. They go and then that because that guy shoots it. When he shoots the pockets like a cannonball coming off that boat or that he uses for a stick. So I don't know if it bugs him a little bit. I mean, he doesn't seem I mean they appear to be really close. They appear to be pumped when each other score. Damn he's a good player. He just like he's so big and so strong and he I don't know, he kind of I don't know, I don't know what the word is. Like he's not fast, but he's not slow. He kind of like just trudges his way around the ice. And they can't knock him off the pock. He uses his reach. They can't get the, you know, the puck from them. In a way he's like Mario that way. Interesting. Mario 6 foot four dry titles every bit as big. And they take the pocket and they protect it. Well, who's going to get it from them? It's now 5 feet from you. He's a remarkable player, dry cider. And I'm doctor a good story right now. You know, they've got some good young talent, developing their Troy Terry comes to mind again with a point streak and everything else. But in common on what you see in Troy carrying the docs generally speaking. But you mentioned that, you know, flying under the radar in the shadow of McDavid, might bug you if you're Leon dry saddle. So I'm watching Trevor Zee gross and the postgame the other night. And he talks about how he bet Ryan O'Reilly, the St. Louis blues, a $100. Right off the opening face off that he was going to win the draw. And that he acknowledged that O'Reilly just kind of grunted out. I mean he didn't say,.

"Well, at the managers level, I'd say not now if I'm Henrik and Daniel, you say a little more money. I'm like, good, yeah, 4 million each. These guys need, do they need that headache? Come on. No, they don't. I mean, they want they signed on to learn and to see if this was something that could be full-time for them that could be like managers or the presidents of the team. But a change at that level at midseason? I don't know, I don't know how it makes a big difference. You could change the code Travis green. You know, they brought Bradshaw in in the off season. I mean, maybe that's a move they could make. But Travis was considered a very good coach four months ago. Now he's a bad coach. I mean, that doesn't make any sense to me either. At the core of this Drake's they're a poorly constructed team. Right. You know, they made it's easy for me to say, hey, why would do? I'm just sitting in my hotel room here. My decisions don't, you know, they don't, they're not really impactful. So they made that huge trade in the summer where they offloaded all the stuff from their free agent mishaps to Arizona for Conor Garland and Oliver ekman Larson. And ekman Larson's been pretty good. Garland's been okay, but they've committed $12 million to those guys for the next 5 years. All they had to do was wait one more year. One more year in those three contracts. Ericsson beagle roussel would be off the ball. They could have buried one of those guys in the American League and saved one. I think it's $1.2 million. They could have not signed Pearson last year. That would have brought them to over four and a half $1 million. Maybe they would have tanf. Maybe they would have to fully. They never stay on the rails long enough to follow a plan through. And it leads you into a little bit of this and a little bit of that. And if you're halfway you're nowhere. And that's kind of kind of where they are. Yeah, and you can't take it in the teeth now, right? You can't really take it in the teeth now and say, okay, well, let's just fold up here and we'll focus on the draft pick and see how it goes. I mean, it's almost too late for that, isn't it? It is because you've brought on the $12 million in my opinion of ackermann Larson and Garland. The time for this was to take a real look at your team when they weren't really a playoff team..

"Look, why don't we start episode 8th here with a shout out and all the best to all the people in D.C. who are dealing with the crazy flooding. I mean, devastation isn't even an appropriate word to describe what's going on there. It's impacted so many. Yourself included, right? I mean, this is personal for you. Obviously, Vancouver is your home, but isn't it just another example not to relate it to the pandemic COVID-19. But a clear example that every once in a while, mother nature needs to show who's boss. And in this case, man, the flooding is just off the charts scary. It's really unimaginable and of course when you know the area, you know, you can really lock in on, oh, it's right there. I know that exit is on the highway. I know where those farms are. And I'm telling you Drake's, it's things that we haven't even really thought about. You know, maybe on a national news story level. So right now to come from the states from a buy 5, there's all kinds of delays. There's flooding all over the place. So I'm not even really sure how much traffic can come in from the south. McDavid's Excellence, Crosby's Countdown, and Auston Matthews' Superpower
"So james i have to. I was a little caught off guard last week when nhl ruled out the playoffs schedule. I was like week. The games are starting this weekend. What's the thinking behind the nhl jumping into the playoffs. So quickly here well. They're trying to move as fast as they possibly can. Because they've got some deadlines on the other end. The nhl had a number of shutdowns with the pandemic due to covid absences for different teams and that of structure schedule a longer than they wanted it to. And there's time pressure because nbc is obviously the rights holder in the us. They've got the olympics this summer. They really wanna get the nhl playoffs astounding out of the way before the olympic start. So there's this window where they got to cram as many games as they can so they didn't waste any time getting started. Well one of the outcomes of this relatively quick playoff start is at the vancouver canucks who had a bad covert outbreak earlier. This year are still playing regular season games even though the playoffs have already started their in what appears to be a completely meaningless. Three-game series against the calgary flames. So are you or is anyone planning to watch those games. I don't think the ratings will be very good. No it's this never happened before in. Nhl history one hundred and three years of history for the league and they never had anything like this happened before they have tv rights agreements. That are a lot of money advertising agreements that are a lot of money and they didn't want to get new situation where they were shortchanging those media partners. And we're going to have to pay some money back because sure you know it's been a tough situation for the league revenue wise. They're down three and a half billion dollars from where they normally would be as as an entity as a league. They're trying to make sure that they can play out the season. And we've had headlines on our site that are you know things like oh connects are still playing for some reason or like you know here. Here's an article about the game. If you still care you know it's it's you know to be fair to the nhl in a normal season. There's a lot of teams that are eliminated with month or two months left in the season and they're playing a lot of meaningless game so it just doesn't quite look this meaningless at the place already started. They're still going
COVID-19 outbreak pauses Vancouver Canucks' season
"Elliott firstly before we do anything on this podcast. Let's just all send our best to everyone in the vancouver canucks organization. Everybody around the nhl feels awful at what the vancouver canucks are going through right now and elliott as we tape this podcast record this podcast On a sunday evening. What is the very latest with this ongoing situation. Well look the covert list expanded again. On sunday night sixteen players listed on it. And you know we should mention that just because you're on it doesn't mean you have it but one of the things that the nhl has basically assumed here is that it's going to go through everyone and even if it doesn't and you hope it doesn't you automatically assume it does and that's the way they look at it when it was going through dallas. That's the way they looked at it. When was going through buffalo. And you know there's been some debate about white symptoms. That players did or didn't have. I'm not getting into that. I think that's crazy. I think that what we have here is that we know it's the variant The brazilian variant. We know there's a player jas horlock who had covert originally last march and now has it again. So there's a lot of things to be concerned about here. We know that not everybody had symptoms. We know that some had symptoms more severe than others and that the ones who did have the severe symptoms. Unfortunately they went through an awful lot. Like basically what i've heard. Is that the roughest outbreak in terms. Of what the players went through generally considered to be buffalo's i think for those players who did have symptoms. This one has been considered rougher than that
Lundqvist to Caps, goalie carousel spins in NHL free agency
"First day for agency very busy for the Washington Capitals. First, the player that is leaving Braid and hope. He left a big mark on the capital's with his play between the pipes and also with his community work, breaking, hoping after 10 years of the capital's signing a two year free agent deal with the Vancouver Canucks with hold me leaving The capital's signing future. Hall of Famer goalie Henrik Lundquist played many years, obviously for the Rangers. He's pushing 40. But the caps feel like he's got another good year in him, so they get a one year contract with Henrik Lundquist also Sonic Justin Schultz or the capital's two year deal with a former Pittsburgh Penguins.

"Second game to. I mean, this guy reminds me of Philip Forsberg. He is a Lanky guy he I mean he's six to one eighty or something. Yeah. He's like fighting back Bro Lake? He's getting hit. He's getting playing clipped hooked. He's getting all this up and he's like hitting these guys and he's coming back. He's throwing body checks he's punching them but he's like I'm not taking this. Yeah, and that's what you need and an Sarp Young Star player he's twenty one you know. I mean he was twenty. He's like why think five eleven like one seventy or something like guy but that guy's. Ten Skater. Bro He's one of the best in the game I'll say right now I'll say flat out he's probably a top skin in the game top top five skater. Because what you got connor mcdavid. Personal Barzel I would say to Quin. Hughes. From. Another metropolitan team. On. This are. I've got is fucking named. Top certainly up there is certainly up there. There's a lot of skaters out there a lot of a lot of top names that maybe not hidden right now, but he could be up there. Especially being so young too. But like, but that's what's scary about these young players they're gonNA want money. And then if the room's not there Wa- happens. Yeah. You'RE NOT GONNA friendly contracts I. Mean s thing with the canucks I mean or do they all believe? Do they want to be together? That's what I was. GonNa say. PD and brock seem like best friends. I mean, Besser took a bridge Dr. think it's two years for five point five, which is pretty good for Besser. PD Bison to. Whore vats five million contract has a captain well. GET PD WHO's Again I'll say it again, top ten center in the League. If you get him for like ten million. That's a steal for me. Hughes Hughes Besser, and PD also best friends. And you know I feel like I don't see many organizations. Yeah. percent. So I don't know if they can buy into it, they if they were to take somewhat team friendly deals and build something special down. Vancouver. Special. Powerhouse, the West Yeah Yeah, no I they're definitely young team that has all the pieces Italian you put them together on that puzzle and Zach goaltending situation man. Shit. That's the that's the the corvette. All right there. I'm already rolling my eyes thinking about it. This is gonNA. Suck. The better tonight they start in about ten minutes ten minutes what we brought it up to that up to the wire and other way too much longer which is nice. Sounds good to me. All right. Well, that was our first mini. The and we talked about stuff. But it's probably that probably fifty minutes or something I don't know. A lot but well, because I feel like this is what we're more passionate about I. Really we have more opinions on the future of our organizations. A little bit more to drink too. Yeah. But. "Guy Needs to be signees a solid third-liner. Potential he was on pace for like twenty three goals. This season needs to resign that he needs to resign that and Travis Green Bench him first game. Ridiculous. Fuck off with that. Don't give me that you know what I mean. And so I guess the last thing I just wanted to a or I. Okay. There's things. Thanks to thanks so. armee connection actually contenders future. His what I put. Yeah. One hundred percent that could be my Vancouver bias come in but I think they are now that was that was the entire first segment. No is just me being like, yeah. They're going to be booking contenders. Of course. I. Mean. Look at it. If they do get an again, knock on wood. A win tonight. They do get me Yes a win tonight and also Hughes Pederson Basser Vat Miller Denko Hughes. These guys can those are all They got big names. This tower has he, but that's how do you sign all that especially with what's existing I? It's it. There's going to be tough decisions and there's going to be people are gonNA walk and there's GonNa be a traits there's going to be traced. They're going have to get some type of a pick for and hopefully the line up picks. So I mean honestly I trade that I saw going around with I. Think it was Was I. think it was Beagle is either or Erickson. Getting traded along with a second round pick. For like beans essentially you know for nothing. That's a captain. You know you need to get rid of that extra four point five million to sign like the pederson chew. Sign. The Miller to sign this to Foley you know you need to sign these guys are integral to the team. And speaking of entire last thing that I want to talk about economics because I know I've rambled on and on and on. Who is more integral to the team? Patterson the senator. I mean I. I was thinking about this in my shower. Before we started this and I still don't know the answer to that in my opinion, look from the outside looking in. The easy answer the cop out answer is go for the you know defense from there the center it's easy to do WanNa fall though in. Games not scoring. So I'm pederson is definitely definitely be. In my opinion looking again on the road. The part I mean, he's he's definitely got to be that cog in the wheel that definitely pushes everything forward. I mean, obviously, you need a strong core under defense. For. So Hughes, definitely isn't going to be like small factor on the team. No I would. I. Would argue that they're probably to I'd honestly that that could even be. I mean. And I was really thinking about my biggest thing was that Pettersen during the game against Minnesota at least yesterday and.

"At a twenty year old level and saying Yeah. Then you have. aller- been on the team. Since? God. Knows when twenty two, thousand, seven, I believe and then Chris Ten f the Chrysanthemum. Alex eligible twenty seventeen that loss in game seven against the Bruins. I think those are huge integral pieces to St Corps. Yeah Troy Stature. Who? Is like some twenty, six year old guy from Vancouver area. Oh. He's a homegrown boy yet homegrown undrafted crazy plays a top four guy. But. Then there's Tyler Myers on the back end Tyler Myers six, eight, six, nine defensemen. who just took six penalties in two games? I know these penalties especially with. This playoffs like they're calling everything feel. D-. Yeah. It feels ridiculous. It's just let them play a little. What back. I was GONNA say I mean yells like they've been kind of software the calls but. Tyler Marz Punch Zach parise in the face. On he jumped on top of another wild player. You know it's like Bro you're six eight. Doing this year like twenty, twenty, nine years old what are you doing? Bro He's like six million dollars a year six six, million dollars a year six years. Jim Benning signed to Shitty. contract. For What we've gotten this year I mean he was pretty fringed taught for player. That doesn't weren't six million dollars. That maybe three million, almost three point five most if you WANNA push it if you really WanNa get in for your team. In that, I feel like the big thing with connects the canucks have all these young players I mean me and you have spoken about plenty of times I mean you've even. For lack of better term creamed over some Cox please. Pederson Hughes. Guys he's eating good love to watch this. For this team is fucking good. I mean they're ranked the top three top two of under twenty five. Yes they are a great young team. But that comes with the flip side. You have the. Not, Phase I'm sorry the free agent signings of Louis Harrison, who has two years of six million dollars Jay. Beagle. Two Myrie two more years at four point three million dollars. Brandon Sutter. I believe one more year four point five. Those are big. These are fucking huge contras heavy and the worst part. So now with the FA situation that connects. Or even just the free agents general connects have. Jake for ten. Choice stature this off the top of my head by the way choice Satcher Jake for ten Tyler Toffoli. Jacob Mushroom and Chris Tanner. Now Jacob Marcham I WANNA start off with his. This takes the whole conversation right here Jacob Marcham is a top five. Besnik Day for me not saying he's a top five, golden league but his top five doesn't candidate just how much he carried this year he definitely had a tremendous season for them. Yeah. I mean he he was the player of the game for mobile gained us. You know I, mean. So I would say ten to fifteen goaltender whatever. Probably top ten closer to..

"Got A few bullet points right here. I guess the first thing I want I wanted to ask you a question actually about Cox okay. Kind of scared. Why is in the Best Mascot in the League? The Bass Man, he's the best mascot. League I don't even care charity embarking my now strength cream right now pins. INSTAGRAM has baller well, what are we looking at Finn's I can even tell you what it is. But just Art. No toe-to-toe with him I feel like. I feel like they're definitely top to dragon and a huge orca whale orca whales are huge row. They're their mischievous creatures. You put a lot of thought into this Yemen I. Love in the whale I wanna meet him one day. When I go to Vancouver I'll be child trip. I really just want to throw a few soft balls in before we actually get the real contract talk and everything because the canucks make me want to cry with their contracts. So their jerseys I mean. They really have to majors they're sick and with the seer. Jersey like the Blue Orca Whale Jersey and the Black Sea Jersey I want to know your preference on. One of the other the Blue Orca, Whale Jersey or the Black Sea Jersey. I think the blue kind of goes with that Vancouver conduct look the. Classic for them. Yeah. So I. Think I'd go with that. Yeah. Okay. But then again, I always do like wearing black. So I feel like that would be a nice cool Nice Jersey to wear. Yeah. I mean I feel. Like kind of how I feel I mean I, think the blue and green definitely. encapsulates the northwest vibe. Team. The Black and Yellow Skate Jersey as a third. Definitely it's definitely cool. Look. Retro Journey. US. I think those are always. Nice feel to them. Yes. So on. With that the I'm so upset right now. So I mean I guess a big thing that I want to talk about. Is Well. We kinda go positive note and how they're. Tackling the wild right now and I definitely. Yeah I mean this is before game four right now are up to one at the moment of recording this right now. Yeah on would. Have Klatten Task Two Games Scored I. Know and that's the thing with the canucks. They are a running gun kind of team they're not a huge defensive team. Defense they really don't have too much I, mean they have Quinn Hughes who? will get him but Quinn Hughes who I think is one of the best. Defense if not the best defenseman on the canucks ever..

"Them. I mean, obviously maybe. They're not that, Stud Oh, you know. Maybe, you can put in another name kind of sub it out and hopefully seem affect. The team's working right now and I know who my perspective I wouldn't want to go. So I get that there's a lot of things coming up and then and then move over to unrestricted. You got a couple of contracts ending man Martin who's a fan favourite. But production-wise was about to say fan favourite well fanfare. Of physicality. Yeah. You know he fights Vic- Bushes holiday you definitely could use some physicality, but it's a matter of. What are we doing for and I know that I think. And I hate saying it because I love him. I love his foundation everything that I. Think it was in Toronto he like house, Miss Smarter or something like that back before he came to islanders, it's like he'll like how's the young player and was like listen took him on his that's so sweet man that's like what you need. You need that veteran is a general player and it felt like he always loved the islanders and by want to see them do the same thing back. But like how what's he gonNA take was the deal that he takes what's the deal that he takes and then long it's like he's not exactly young either yeah no. So He's getting up there who else we got KUNA coll-. I have a book every week every week it's something new within. Oh. He's doing good. He's gained and then next thing you. Re doing with this guy. So that's another a good piece of reliability. It's flip flops with him. It feels like. Retard, he can't. I, think it was the one deal when you deal with on the mistaken. Or. Maybe like year and a half where he came over on. That might be I do they recently I don't think so I think he's kind of an inch changeable piece at least in my opinion. Green, the GRANDPA, the team dominated make fun of him but. You know he's getting kind of old you know. Derek hard. Yeah. He's making one point two right now. And Seer. Yes. There's a lot of resigning and there's a Lotta talk and then on top of all of that, you have all these restricted unrestricted free agents. You're. GonNa expansion is not this season. It's next season, right? Correct. Yeah. So they have a lot of decisions to make this year that can easily affect them next season I without a so it's like. What do you take and what do you give right now in hopes of not losing in the future? Why felt that also plays into the contracts I mean. We'll talk about with the canucks but Yeah I don't know I feel like that also plays a contract situations what you do this off season..
Market panic after coronavirus spending stimulus packages
"As crown avars cases Roy's across the country and industry shuts down hundreds of thousands of people. Losing jobs and businesses across the country lay going broke so is government spending enough or too much and how long can the Australian economy survive before we keep into irreparable damage? Are WE AS POOR. Kili asks in the Australian newspaper This Week. We burning the village to save it. Daniel would is budget policy and institutional reform program director at the Graduate Institute. And she's the incoming chief executive officer of the Graduate Institute and Salmon. Cowan is the research director at the Center for Independence Studies at Sydney. Think tank that I had up Danielle Salmon. Welcome both of you. Thank you come now. Danielle the in response to the government's big spending stimulus packages those a seventeen billion dollar package about a fortnight ago. Then another six billion dollar one earlier this week in response the markets panicked a full stampede trends indicate that the markets will continue their stampede lock fraught and capital is all this government largess justified. Look I think it is absolutely justified when you look at the style of health challenge. And what the government's trying to do to keep that contained in terms of effectively shutting down pretty significant sectors of our economy You know the hospitality industry is gone. anything that relies on social consumption so a lot of businesses headdresses petitions. The canucks very significant swipe at the economy. And so we need this government package in order to support the businesses during what is going to be a very shop. It comes down to it. Jonathan Freedland in the Guardian this week Sam and he says just as there are no atheists on a sinking ship. There are no free marketeers independent so manure relating free-market t doesn't this unprecedented cross justify unprecedented measures such as much bigger government. Well you've wrought remind frame rocketeer evening across as so. I guess that's a positive spun for from Mor perspective. I think there's an important distinction that we need to make I here. Which is the audio of stimulus as opposed to the broader concept of what government support government action in a pandemic? Cannon should be so the idea that what the government can or should do his prop up. Economic growth is in the short term. Which is what stimulus is. I think that that's a very mistaken idea. It's a mistake and concert. Not The least of which because what? We're actually trying to do here is Danielle roughtly. Daddy shutdown pots economy for health rights. So the the issue here is not so much. A case of should the government being involved in short term stimulus. It's what sort of support package. Should we give to cushion some economic impacts of this crisis in? What should we do on a health perspective? Now of an expert on the hill saw things. That's where the government's getting its health advice from an economic perspective. I think it's important to realize that we cannot prop every business in in the country. You know Macaroni France. Basically said we won't let a single business go bankrupt. That would be a stike. We're looking at a potentially protracted shut down in the economy with significant economic impacts. And we need to be smart in strategic about how we deploy our resources. The government doesn't have an unlimited budget. Econ prop up. Everyone and it shouldn't try and provide support to everyone. What it needs to do is target. It's assistance to the areas most in need to the people most in need and ensuring that when we come out the other side of this whereas applies to as we can be to get coming out on the other side of this means massive deficits as far as the. I can see and that would imply a substantial future tax increase crosses. Maybe as soon as next she wouldn't that retired the recovery. Daniel look really depends on how quickly you try to pay down the debt. And you're absolutely right when we will be wrecking up a substantial amount of with these reforms. There's absolutely no question about that So essentially we are asking future generations to pay for this response but given the importance of supporting business through this and I do agree with him. We will not say every business here. But we absolutely need to avoid. Is You know what will be preheated to economics and the economy becoming a permanent one if we lose a lot of productive capacity and the economy that has got to be the priority. Right now yes it waiting for that we go substantial debt to pay off the government will hopefully find a path to do that in a way that will not hit the the economy is coming out of the what happens if the pandemic lasts into the winter and early. Spring Salmon Cowan that the CLEM will be for another round and then another round of high levels of government spending. Is that really sustainable? Well it's an interesting question Australia's coming into these spots. A lot of people were not an is good spot as wearing two thousand night. But we're not coming into these crosses with government dead at one hundred percent of Jj pay a lot of the countries in Europe. The challenge I think here is and what the government You know it's difficult for the government to do this because it's been so reactive in such a short period of tall it but it is. How can we draw on the resources of society? More broadly so that we don't put the entire burden for these onto future generations. You know if you sort of think of it in these terms Government has its role to apply. It will take its level of debt individuals who have resources businesses who have resources we should encourage them to access those resources as well One good example. These we have caught a good deal of money in superannuation that could be used to support people in the short term. It's not going to be a complete substitute for an expanded welfare system in this cross but it could take some of the pressure off the system at a point in time where we don't know how long this will last Danielle. The government did announce that would allow Australians to access a superannuation. What's your position on that yet? Look wait we think unbalanced the good idea and clearly difficult decision for individuals to make to to draw down on the sweeper particularly the time when we hear the knock. It's onto forming. Particularly well sited the value of their investment might not be what they were but in a world in which the government is offering generous safety net but for many people that will not be enough if I have lost their jobs to keep up with their bills So we think allowing people to tap into those saving given the extraordinarily nightshirt. These crosses is a good idea to help people get

"Should we be considering the history? The besser has well when he got hurt on February. Eighth game here with Calgary and he gets tied up with Andrew Mudgee. Piney just kind of a weird play at the side boards. All the weird stuff with Besser happens at the side boards. You know by the door. Whatever they just get tied up but you could see when best. She's trying to get away from him. There's a tug on the shoulder and everything. So he leaves the game. He's favoring his arm and I'm thinking okay. Is it the arm or is he trying to hold the shoulder and places her separation after the game in the back stuff out supposed to report on? I did see him in a sling but of course that's precautionary but the very day. We saw him without one. So you can. You can say this much I thought initially is a kind of a Stinger because he was around. The Room is not practicing. Can't be that bad talk about impossibly playing Sunday here against Anaheim but then I'm thinking okay. He's also had risk problems. Continues to tapers rest. Is it something there? The fact that he's going to be seeing a specialist. I mean these guys level this love. I can see a specialist any day in Vancouver which I I'm of the mind. Is he seeing somebody somewhere else? Is there something else going in here? So the interesting thing here is not only his situation. It dovetails into Michael. Furlan is now playing on a rehab assignment with the UTICA comets. What's he going to be like when he comes back with his concussion? History the trade deadline's not that far away if beyers on the shelf and Furlan's kind of struggling and you're the Vancouver canucks I I suddenly trade deadline day is not over. Just going to add a depth thing here. It could get really interesting because if you look at the division and you and you mentioned earlier the way. Certain teams are struggling. Do you go more all in all John Hall. Y'All do make another move to make sure I mean if you're if you're this close and you got a decent shot up going more than one round least who knows you just say. Well we're just GONNA add a depth fourth line guy just GONNA go. Well let me throw this at you. who the hell is out there? That's the problem. There's nobody out there right now that it's going to come into this organization and be a savior if you go and Piss away more assets whether it's prospects are draft picks to me. That is absolutely nuts. I mean I took a look at the list of names list. And you're going. You gotta be I mean Nashville is going through a house cleaning up. Benin's out there g going to get Michael Gremlin. Gdp GREAT. I don't I don't know about that Brennan said what's good player at one time longtime ago I mean it just goes on and on I mean did Tyler to Foley's available come on take sample and it's for Wayne Sim- similar I don't you know what I mean it's thing he's got by five goals this year. He's old and he slow and he's making five. Schnell of course most of that. Money's gone so you're going to try to rent a guy to help you. But what are you going to give up? This isn't a late round draft pick scenario with these players so I look at that list this morning and while on him going the it's it's the same thing with the goaltending situation. If you ever wanted to get into a situation where you know what you agree to disagree. At the end of the day with Jacob Marston this forty nine understood for aging goalies out there and I wouldn't touch any of them so it's the same thing when I'm looking at. What are they going to do to maybe prop themselves up in the top? Six Mix if besser Furlan is not Furlan of two years ago when he scored twenty one goals. But this is where it's GonNa get in. Here's the other thing. Do you really WanNa go and part with first round draft. Pick or a top prospect to go and get a rental. I'm I'M GONNA I'M GONNA stick by my guns. I know I said this all along about how difficult I still think. It's going to be to get there but I've also been of the mind that the organization is at a point. Now the optics of all this you gotta you gotTa get in but even an not giving up anything just to get in on merit on what you're doing right now with this roster because the kids need experience you could win the first round you get punt it in the first round but talking to these kids week after week month after month year after year. But what's going to be like Johnny when you get to the playoffs? They need to experience it and that to me is not going to be an issue This is a playoff team. They really are because as we've been talking about. They have the Golden Their playoff team. They're going to get that experience in all of it. Here's the one thing that the connect took a long time to learn that the that Trevor Linden is we were talking about earlier in the show was right. You know what you do not go and win a Stanley Cup by making some blockbuster deal and mortgaging your future. What you need to do in this era of total parody is very very crafty in terms of adding that last. Little piece here or there. If you don't see your team as a legitimate Stanley Cup contender deal with it. Look in the mirror tell yourself the truth. Don't lie to yourself. Don't try to think that you can be better than you. Or this. Organization has made a history of that and partying away with major assets. No if this team you believe is ready and you just need one more piece. Great if not walk away from it. Get Your playoff experience. You'll be fine for starters. I have no cap space. And secondly if the situation is worse and then he's not I gar. Get some relief there about you. Know if you're around this team day in day out and a lot of the noise around the canucks tends to come from the other side of the mountains where you know there. What's going on in Vancouver? I mean they're getting away with goaltending. Whatever they better go get guys. They are going to make any kind of a push in the playoffs. Or even get there. They better go get X Y and Z or said as we say in Canada and when your round the team and you're in the room you don't get that feel you don't get it from the players are going to certainly say what they say about their peers. You don't WanNa mess with the room but That's where it's going to be interesting to me. I the whole thing with Besser and the whole thing with Furlan is going to I mean. Gm's think they have to do their due diligence but there shouldn't be stupidity attached. No I mean you can justify. Jt Miller and we haven't even talked about him but then he has been the single biggest nicest surprise to it all. It's beyond that. Yes and the leadership that he's brought of all of all the guys in the league were were acquired in trades. He I mean the impact. He's having Vancouver. Is the number one impact in the entire league? Did you see that coming? I didn't while I've said this beyond I'm just tired of talking to buy because he's way better than I thought he was. I thought he was a certain kind of player by what came to light was when he was let go by Tampa the one thing he did say as I have never trained harder my entire professional career than I did. This last summer came in at six one to fifteen but solid and playing hard even a training camp in Victoria. Why is this guy going so hard through all the zones and hard on pox and get into the net and setting screens and picks and taken pucks off people? Because he's cut from this old school clause that he I mean it's not just getting a player who had potential to get back to twenty two goals which is now you know. And he's got thirty gold potential the rest of the way here. He was the right place at the right time because he had lost game. Seven in eastern conference final with new with the Tampa. He'd lost game seven on home. Ice and the Eastern conference final with the Rangers. He's been there. He's done that he can go to these kids and say listen. This is what it's going to be like the last twenty games and if we do get in. This is what it's going to be like and that's really invaluable well but the thing is we ran a poll question tides day. You know which can affect you have the most love for and throw four. Big names okay. Included JT Miller who didn't get any love at all. I'm going how the fans not connect to that. I mean what I see what? Jt Miller does. We're we have an advantage because we also understand what's going on in the room and there's a great leadership that he brings his well but I'm I am surprised that on Valentine's Day. Jt Miller didn't get any love. Well I just think the history here with marks Jim. I mean we remember the march from that just made his transition to the NHL was horrific. I mean this was always the best goalie outside of the NHL. Just lights out at the American league level. Three goals the first four shots in his first game and he was just anyways yanked that San Jose game. I remembered here like it was yesterday. And that started some self doubt. It started a prickly relationship with US and over the years. He not only got better. You came in Masterton nominee and you look at the year he's having so I get the JT Miller staff. But I just think the relationship with Jacob Marks Jim over all these years his why. He's you know people are sending roses supposed to do all roses. It's all fun of throw by on September. The twenty six this year the scenes will turn forty. Wow born six minutes apart. Back in one thousand nine hundred eighty see. I remember the eighties. Well actually I don't remember the eighty S. I just went right from the Soviets best friends all of it. They're living in Vancouver They do like traffic guards stuff. Take care of the kid and it's just a great to see them. I mean they're part of the community It is a relationship that I never thought that I would ever see. Let me throw this final thing at you in their lifetime. Maybe here in Vancouver now as conduct fans will they ever see.
