"Why does that happen? Questions like that were absolutely front of mind as well. And also questions that I asked people who knew him at the time. And sometimes it was interesting. Sometimes I would get a really clear explanation from someone that I never would have thought of. And other times, the answer would be beats me. I was there at the time. We have no idea what he was thinking. Well, I want to talk to you about his fourth wife, Diane Sawyer, who you did speak to for this book, but let's actually talk about some of this other interviews first, because you interviewed, as you said around 250 people, people from Meryl Streep to Candice Bergen to Robert Redford, Gloria Steinem. I'm curious which interviews were the most insightful and maybe perhaps surprising that challenged your perception of him. Well, certainly my interview with Elaine May was completely critical to my understanding of him because the farther back you go in someone's life, the fewer people there are to talk to. And when you're writing about someone who did a lot of movies and did a lot of plays. You kind of have the luxury of a safety net. You can think, well, if one person from this play won't talk to me, others will. And if none of the actors will talk to me, maybe the designer will talk to me. But for the nickels in May years, there was one person. One person who could shed light on how he became who he was and how he thought. And if she didn't agree to talk to me, there was really nowhere else to go with that. So everything that Elaine May said to me was a revelation. And I really mean that literally because she's given so few serious interviews about their process and their work together over the last 50 years. That was really, really important to me. And other than that, the great value for me came from people who had worked with him more than once and knew him over many years. People like Meryl Streep, who had made, I think, three or four movies and done a play with him and been close to him from the early 1980s until his death. Starting with silkwood.

"His mom away from him in so many ways. You know, she was so successful. She was just constantly working, which is great as a success story. But we found that even Christopher Robin, the son of the creator of Winnie the pooh, he had a really difficult relationship with Winnie the pooh because his name was in one of the pooh. And so the creator of who had a really difficult relationship with his son. Right. Murphy Brown Candice Bergen is the actress. I didn't know this, but her father was a huge, hugely successful ventriloquist. Yeah, thank you. Yeah, puppet guy. Edgar Bergen. Yeah, and he was so popular that Candice had almost a competition with this character that wasn't even real. She's in. We use archival footage, but she's in our documentary saying he was real to me. And I felt like, you know, I had a fight for my father's love from this character. So it's really interesting, you know, not so much Mr. Rogers. I mean, his kids have been said that it's like your father being the second coming of Christ, which is a hard thing to leave up to that responsibility. But there is a really interesting relationship with these people who create these iconic characters for children programming with the relationship with the real children. Well, and I think there would be a little bit, I see more of Candice Bergen side of things than Mr. Rogers kids because his Candice Bergen's dad creates the second one with the puppet's name was, but the dummy shall we say, but there actually is a Barney. And I bet you this kid was like, I'm sick of this freaking Barney already, you know? I want my mom back. Yeah, I mean, like, you know, I'll just say she was a fantastic mother. It wasn't like, you know, anything bad. Right. But with the same regard, it's like here comes like any kid who's turning 5 or 6 years old is going to be, it's the first thing you learned to denounce, right? You're like, I'm not a little kid anymore. I'm not a fan of Barney anymore. You know, like it's the first thing you learn to hate to fit in. And now so most kids can be like, okay, I'm not gonna watch Barney anymore and be done with it. Whereas, oh, mom's not here because, you know, she's out in Europe with Barney, you know? Or I have to hear all these kids making fun of Barney and making fun of me 'cause they know my mom, you know, it's just like it's a weird sort of relationship that's very common. Let's talk about kind of Patrick and what happened to him later on in his life. Do you think it's because of, I don't know, the destruction of his family due to Barney that he ends up kind of going off the rails and shooting his neighbor. I'm laughing because it's like he just went for it. Just wondering, like, you know what I mean? No, no, yeah, I mean, in our two hour documentary, we kind of explore everything that surrounds that what just happens. You know, Patrick shot his Malibu neighbor. And went to jail for 5 years. I think there's a lot that goes into. You could easily just minimize it to like, oh, isn't ironic that the mother of this creature that's supposed to teach you how to love, shot their neighbor, but there was a lot that kind of went into it. Patrick himself had a brain tumor as a young child. Oh, wow, okay. There's a lot of attention towards Barney, where if bob Wes is getting death threats, you know the creator of Barney's getting threats. So there's definitely like not high alert, but there's sort of paranoia that's coming in being raised by this high profile character. And then also Cheryl's husband, unfortunately, killed himself. So it's like, he's dealing with that at a young age. They were divorced right before that. There's a lot of things that went on in his life. That are very unfortunate and just wait on them. And we reached out to Patrick to talk to him about what happened that day. And unfortunately, he didn't want to talk to us, but we are more than our worst day. Patrick now is out of jail. He's doing well. So we're not here to point a finger at them, but it is interesting to see all that went around this character and how it affected her family in such a way, especially all the things I just mentioned. It's unfortunate and crazy and yeah, well it's one of those things too like fame is not for everybody. No. When you create something like basically we mentioned like a toy for her son that becomes so big, her husband might not have wanted that. I don't think they did. You know, I didn't write. I mean, I think sure always had the idea that Barney was going to be successful. But I don't think anyone can imagine how successful it was going to be. You know, and I think the family itself very much loved just to become and Cheryl's husband was running the company that his father created. So his life sort of shifted in the way he thought it was going to be. Right. And I'm not saying he did what he did because of that. I mean, obviously there's a lot that I don't even know. You know what I mean? Because behind closed doors, you don't really know. And the family didn't really want to speak to us in that regard. There was a lot of attention and I think at times they would have taken it back. Well, it was interesting to me where you said that he was the, you know, went from being the breadwinner of the family to kind of being in the background and being the stay home house husband in a lot of ways. And that's what I was saying earlier. These people might not have wanted that and didn't want to hit you. You're like, listen, we never expected to be this big, and we don't like it anymore, but the cats are ready to the bag. The dinosaurs are out of the cave, shall we say, and there's no turning back. And I think that was kind of what was thinking when she left the show and moved to Connecticut. I think it was trying to sort of not a redo, but what would the word be? Like, just like a reset, you know? Sure, of course. Trying to get your life back if nothing else, you know? Yeah, I mean, when I spoke to her and again, she wasn't in the movie at all, but when I was in a really good place, you know, she's very happy, especially with Patrick had just come out of jail. So she was in a good spot. It's kind of

His tweets on the show for a long time before I saw him. Home run. Oh my God. You're a homewrecker, Stephanie. And a man eater. She was a Homer. She was a man eater. And she was a bad actress. That part's true. Okay. I still do. I saw just right. I know how it is. I see only film I think I have other planes, not myself in. I think so. I do get residuals for playing. Stephanie Miller in various, you know as you do. I mean tiny ones, like, you know, you sense. 43 cents. What was that one where you interviewed Candice Bergen Oh, I played myself as a TV host on oxygen because I was a host on oxygen. Where Candice Bergen also had a show. So I was also the most geographically convenient. You were going to be shooting her show anyway. Yes. So I would get her. She's across the hall in the studio. Gwyneth Paltrow's at a bar and there's a TV in the background and I'm interviewing Candice Bergen on the TV. Are you seeing or is it just yes? Can we factor you in the back of the car? So it wasn't like a disembodied voice asking Candice Bergen questions on the TV. No, it was me. Okay, well, that's a pause. Yeah. That was me when I had to interview Cindy Crawford for the revlon commercial. Remember? Yes. I wasn't on camera, neither was my voice. I was just in these comedy monkey for the day to make her sound like a human, you know, like when she was saying lines like she was actually so she was answering questions of mine, but I was sure. I was invisible. Anyway, this is me. I'm being me. This is what this hand is back here. The scene is really about Gwyneth Paltrow. So she's at a bar, so I'm just back here, all the little talking head. And they spend more on the stamp to mail you the check than what the check is worth. Yes. Okay. Got it. Yes. Okay. Maybe I could just go pick it up and, you know, if they could add the that'll cost you money now because of the gas. I have no idea what a stamp is now. My career is costing me money. My film career. I feel like over 50 cents now. I think it is. All right, I should know my mom was open to post office. Exactly. If we were to ask you a son of the postal service. You get the forever stamps. They're good whenever. Yeah, they don't have they don't have numbers on them. So you don't know. If you bought forever stamps ten years ago, that was a good investment. It's somewhere in that drawer, but who mails things in here? I know. I'm already, have you dealt any time like in this millennium with, I don't even know. Government offices post office DMV. "You don't. That's okay. That's not true. What I don't like is anything. Because you've mischaracterized me. Your face is so red. Go ahead, defend yourself. That's not even true. I don't like anything that is below a B plus when it comes to rom coms. As soon as it tips, that's like, I'll watch the formulaic version of an action movie? Yes. And be content. Right. I can't, in this sub genre, if it isn't at a higher quality. Now, like when Harry met Sally, that's like, that is probably one of my favorite movies. Okay. But it's not because it's a romantic comedy. It's because it is two actors at the perfect time with a great script and the perfect director. Coming together and using the formula, I don't know, not to elevate it necessarily but almost like to redefine it, right? Like that movie rebuilds that genre and then paves the way. So we don't Alabama. I just think it's crap. Like I just don't think it's good at all. And it's just disrespectful to Josh Lucas and Patrick Dempsey, and of course Reese Witherspoon, a commanding supporting formats, performance by Candice Bergen. I have a lot of respect for some of those people. I just don't like that movie. And I think I don't like that movie in part because it feels so predictable. I mean, they do also sing sweet home out. Bama at the end. I don't know whether we would make it in 20 die on that hill, right? It was just the one that came to mind for some reason, I think, because Reese with other spoon is on the brain as we'll discuss later. But I do like romantic comedies. I probably like those screwball comedies a lot more. Me too. But well, I mean, I like them both. Yes. But I did ultimately like this movie. Do you think Billy eichner is a movie star? He could be a new type of I mean, what is a movie star now? You know? I don't think that he is the, well, he's 40 four years old. You know, I was about to say, I don't think he's in the George Clooney, Julia Roberts, like charm offensive Hall of Fame, but in the same time I personally find have found his press tour and all of the charm around it to be incredibly effective.

"Rich people have no technology. The Wi-Fi. They're still on Dale. What is going on? Anyway, so I wrote it, I sat on it for like a year because it was just so personal and it's not an autobiography, but it's based on your life experience. Yeah, and it's a lot about mental illness. It's about addiction. It's things that a lot of us grow up with that nobody talks about. Did you clear it with your family? I tried. She is in court right now. Well, here's no, no, no. I mean, here's the thing. It's like, I kept saying specifically to my mom, like, don't think of Candice Bergen as you. She's not you. She's going to say things that Candice Berg and the actress was like, I want to say this. Or I want to do it this way. So I'm like, we need to just stop using the pronouns. Like, she's playing me. She's playing. But it's hard and it is a very vulnerable place even for me, but the fact is there are stories like this in every family. Every race class, gender, everybody has these kinds of issues of like the one who stayed the one who left. We don't talk about this one. We don't do that. So that to me, it's about all those stories, which so many people have. And there's a big rock in Jewish families too. That's right. Honey, we will mount that trash. But let me actually. We just put food on top of all of it. And if you put enough food, it just stays down. You know, we are so happy for you with this movie because people can relate to it. And we're also happy that you are a co host thing. Jeopardy. I don't want to move on yet. I have important questions about this movie. I got to get to jeopardy. I know you got to get everybody one more question..

"It is still generally quite calm to be honest, Marcus, when you are when we have it on the streets, it is relatively relaxed, the restaurants are still full. They're sometimes a little bit of an eeriness about it. One person I spoke to a couple of days ago talked about how many people here just don't really want to talk about it. So they're kind of going about their lives, but there is this sense, especially when you get out of the Ukrainian capital and people who aren't necessarily as in the know about the situation that they are concerned, of course, and they don't really want to listen and talk about the threats too much. They just want to get about with their lives. But yes, there is this sort of eeriness in the mood here, of course, with people wondering exactly what to do how to plan some people perhaps preparing supplies and things like that. But generally, at the moment, life just goes on. And finally, Chris, turkey is president Recep Tay Erdoğan is there today? What can you tell us about that visit? Yes, that's right. It's been part of a flurry of diplomatic activity this week, but so far most of the visitors had been more from Western Europe, if you will, Mark Woods of the Netherlands was here, Boris Johnson was here. Turkey is an interesting case, right? Because president Erdoğan has, you know, as a semi also authoritarian figure, frankly, he has good relations with both Ukraine and with Russia. And so he is trying to put himself forward as something of a mediator in this crisis, somebody who can speak to both sides. According to Turkish diplomats, that is being received as a positive on both sides. So they might actually be some potential there. President Erdoğan is here as I said earlier to sign a trade deal with Ukraine. He has also provided weapons or drones to be specific to Ukraine, arms exports are a big industry for turkey. That's something that has, of course, irked Russia in the last year. So he's sort of been playing both sides. He also plans to meet with Vladimir Putin later. Potentially in turkey. So he's going to be meeting with both. And it really will be interesting to see whether he can be some kind of impartial interlocutor, if you will between the two. That's what some articles said. In Kyiv, and now here is a lot of rebella with days while the new set lies. Thanks, Marcus. New Zealand's government has announced a phase reopening of the country's borders, as the nation starts to ease some of the world's toughest COVID restrictions. Vaccinated citizens in Australia can go home from the 27th of February, while job citizens elsewhere will be allowed in from 13th of March. Canada's conservatives have voted to oust Erin O'Toole as party leader after only 18 months in the job. 73 of the 118 conservative parliamentarians voted to replace the man who led the party to defeat in last year's elections. Candice Bergen has become the party's interim leader. And Zürich's office of urban development has unveiled far reaching plants to create spaces for new and taller high rise buildings. "In more senses than the merely geographical Canada enjoys looking down on the United States. It is a psychological trade often made by nations damned to live alongside mighty neighbors. That rowdy mob on the other side of the border may make more noise and get more attention, but we are better. No blood and nicer. The country that comforts itself thus is not always wrong and Canada is by and large altogether pleasant, but it's not always right, either. In recent days, Canada has discovered that it is not entirely immune from the Yahoo politics that Canada loftily disdains whenever it manifests in the United States. Canada's sleepy capital Ottawa has been besieged by a convoy of honking, throbbing, growling trucks, whose honking, throbbing, growling drivers are enraged by COVID-19 vaccine mandates which would require Canadian truck drivers returning from the U.S. as Canadian truck drivers very often do to quarantine upon every return home if they have chosen to remain un jabbed. It is fair to say, however, that among the truckers are those motivated by what might be charitably described as broader concerns. The confederate flag has been hoisted by some who appear confused about which country they're in and about quite a lot else besides and others have raised the swastika, though it remains an open question, whether therefore or against what it represents. I need to know what a white supremacist looks like. Are you a white supremacist, sir? I haven't watched the president. All right. There you go. Audaciously spelled and punctuated placards declared the familiar findings of those who have done their own research that we are being surreptitiously implanted with 5G tracking devices by our Illuminati overlords, who are themselves merely the traitorous cat's pause of the shape shifting alien lizards from a parallel dimension who secretly manipulate human destiny and so interminably and absurdly forth. And a breaker on this is a rubber duck. You got a copy on me, big fan, come on. The protest is called the freedom convoy by its participants. It is being called other things by the people of Ottawa. Many of those things bracing contradictions of Canada's reputation as a bastion of painstaking politeness. The capital citizens have reported manifold instances of harassment abuse, assault, vandalism, and general antisocial behavior by the protesters, including clowning around on the national war memorial. We witness the desecration of cherished monuments, displays of hate symbols, and all types of bad behavior that have taken away the freedom of our residents to live without fear. People who have had the opportunity to voice their frustration against government policy, but as the old saying goes, they've worn out their welcome. The disorder was sufficient that Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau, who has recently tested positive for COVID-19 himself, was relocated from his usual residence for security reasons. Comparisons have been made to the mob of cosplaying hooligans who invaded the capitol building in Washington, D.C. in January last year, and though the truck drivers have not as of this broadcast perpetrated any large scale organized violence, the energy is a similar mix of self pity and self indulgence. We're looking for freedom, we're looking for freedom that's the only thing. I can not tolerate to see any longer because we're not without living like we should be. To have masks because children can breathe God given fresh air. It is important to note, however, that the freedom convoys are a tiny minority not only among Canadians, but among Canadian cross border truck drivers of the 120,000 who come and go between Canada and the U.S. regularly, roughly 90% are fully vaccinated, and actually somewhat higher figure than among the Canadian population generally. Doubtless for this reason, Justin Trudeau has felt empowered to take a firm stand, declaring that he would not meet with the truckers and dismissing their conspiracy superstitions in refreshingly bracing terms. Yes, the concerns are not new, not surprising, but are a continuation of what we've unfortunately seen in disinformation and misinformation online conspiracy theorists about microchips about God knows what else that go with the tinfoil hats. Nevertheless, there are those who have perceived mileage in embracing the freedom convoys. Some on the other side of the border are very much the usual suspects those American politicians for whom any protest in any cause by any means raised against a liberal politician is to be applauded. Extra the Canadian truckers you've been reading about it. Who are resisting bravely, these lawless mandates are doing more to defend American freedom than our own leaders by far, and we want those great Canadian truckers to know that we are with them all the way. They are. They've really shown something. But intriguingly and or depressingly, a few Canadian politicians have thought it worth giving this particular nest of wasps a couple of encouraging pokes. It was longer than the dinner. Joni Mitchell, Brent eckland, Judy, carne, Goldie on, Michelle Phillips, Candice Bergen, Melanie Griffin, Raquel Welch, Iman, Mary Tyler Moore. Can you get further away from Mary Tyler Moore than Iman? Diana Ross. Connie Chung, what? Diane Sawyer, that kind of didn't surprise me because one time I think I told you I was in the CVS building and I walked by her in the hole, I was gonna go see Dan Rather, and she walked by me and we were the only people in the small little hallway. And she was beautiful. And she waited at me, and I was like, oh, oh my God. She stopped me for a second. She went to kind of like, wow, wow, lost my footing a little bit. So I can understand that one. And if she was much younger when he was with her, sure. Isabel ajani, yeah, yeah. Barbara streisand had heard about that. He confirmed it. Here's a weird one, Justine Bateman. What? Yeah. Apparently Justine and her brother were kind of, I don't know what you call it. They kind of had this little routine they did when they were younger and not a lot of risque routine, but they did some things and they were in like the crowd of people because Justin Bateman had been acting. He's like 8 years old. So he knew everybody. And he was invited to all these parties and they were called the Bateman brats. So anyhow, Justine babe, I never expected that. And here's one. I never thought of. And I was a little surprised, not really, but I'd never heard gossip on this. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, that would be a yes. So look, this one on for a long time. The point is were there for over an hour and we hadn't even scratched the surface and Warren is listening to all these names and he seemed to be, you know, thinking back to those wonderful times and all in all, we had a wonderful night. And I'll tell you what happened at the end. Again, he's with the net Benny. At the end, and it was also one of those nights where I began to flirt with Stephanie James, and I thought, well, I got to date this girl. And I ended up dating her. Johnny ended up being with Donna Alexander. So it was like love was in the air that night in all worked out, but here's how it ends. Warren had a car, a town car. He had a driver. And I think he was staying up at the Pierre hotel, I believe. And he goes on the call out. Carlyle, either way, he says, well, I'm gonna head out wonderful meal.

"Is self regulate mean? I mean, she basically keeps her emotions in check. This is a topic for podcasts. I don't know, my mind gets out on left field too. So what do I know? But these two, they started this topic about no bathing debate, not bathed with Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis. And now they're starting this how do you do with your wife's period nonsense? I just think it's like cheap and it's not a real reach to go for topics like this. You know, come on, get better. Get better. Big movie coming out. I know a lot of people have problems with her. I don't. I like the girls work, and I think she's gonna do a great job. Big project about the famed talent agent Sue mengers is being shot around and on the movie will be Jennifer Lawrence playing Sue mengers, listen, this is gonna be, I think this is I know it's very Hollywood and only people in Hollywood my nose Sue mengers is, but nonsense. Sue mengers was, I mean, forget what a colorful character she was. She was a female agent who crashed the Hollywood boys club of being age of being an agent. I mean, there were no female agents like this. She, I know it's for Robert Evans. She was amazing. Big, big, giant personality. Big kind of a New York Jew personality, which I love. I feel at home with people like that. Might go on Apple and might go on Netflix. No one really knows just yet. But Sue mengers, Evans had some great stories about her. She worked at MCA. Icm. William Morris, she represented clients in their heyday. Barbara streisand, Candice Bergen, Peter Bogdanovich, Michael Caine, Diane cannon, Cher, Joanne Collins, Brian De Palma, faith on a Bob Fosse Gene Hackman, Sidney Lumet ally McGraw, Steve McQueen, Mike Nichols, Nick Nolte, Tatum O'Neal, Ryan O'Neal, Anthony Perkins, Burt Reynolds, sybil shepherd, gorby Dow, Richard Benjamin, pull up prentice Tuesday Weld. Are you kidding me? She died about ten years ago. There was a play about her, Bette Midler played her in the play and bet was great. I'm not a Bette Midler fan, but she was born to play Sue mengers. The thing about Sue mengers was in a very callous industry. She was known for her devotion to her clients. And she got big salaries. She got streisand big money. And all their other women who aren't accustomed to paychecks like that. She fought hard. She fought with men. And she championed young actresses in her day and I mentioned Robert Evans a lot. While she represented ally McGraw, when she was young, for love story, Diane cannon fade down all my Candice Berg and simple shepherd. All of them, she gave them a voice and a statue and a business that was really male dominated. 70s and 80s were hers. It kind of changed the business shifted when Michael began to ascend with creative arts agency. We don't need to get into that kind of stuff, but that's when the business kind of changed. But before that, she was a big powerful deal maker. I think it's going to be a great movie. People are already talking shit about it, talking shit about Jennifer Lawrence playing the part. You know, people say it's not compelling enough to justify J law's $20 million price tag. She's not going to get 20 million for this kind of movie. That's over. You know, if it were a $15 million package, you know, I understand, but it's not that way. Okay? And people say, this is money down the drain. Who cares about the two men? I don't agree. People care about personalities. So magnets could be anybody. It could be a crazy judge in the 80s or a hairdresser in the 60s. It doesn't matter. Personality, personality sell the project, I think. And people are bad mouths and J law, Jennifer Lawrence, because Harvey Weinstein, you know, he's the one who got rich and famous and he did it all. Let me shed some light on this topic because people who think this way a really, really wrong. Sorry, I'm getting parched. To your amazement, not mine, but probably to yours, Harvey Weinstein only worked with Jennifer Lawrence on one movie. That's it. It was silver linings playbook. And in that movie, Jennifer Lawrence actually had to audition for the director David O Russell, who's notoriously tough and he cast her on the spot. Harvey wanted Anne Hathaway for that role, but David O Russell got his wife. So Harvey wanted to Hathaway. And then David or Russell cast on his next two movies, American hustle, and joy, and Harvey Weinstein was not a producer on either of those projects. So I don't know what this comes from. I guess because people assume, maybe it's true. I happen to think that she may have bent over for Harvey once or twice, maybe. It could be many of many actresses did. She fits the mold in my book. And because to that, she's begun to get a bad name. She disappeared from Hollywood. She wanted to kind of just disappear with all the Harvey shit. I kind of understand that. But I think it's unfair that people act as if, well, she only gets parts 'cause she felt Harvey. He puts her in all these movies. No, he doesn't. You know, David Russell hasn't had a new movie since joy, and that's why you haven't seen Jennifer Lawrence in a while. That plus the me too shit in the hobby stuff. If she fucked anybody, it would be David O Russell, not Harvey Weinstein. Although I think she probably did. So people need to do their research before they start, you know, bad mouthing people. Because Jennifer Lawrence, whether you like her or don't like her, you gotta admit something. These are stone cold facts you have to just swallow. Jennifer Lawrence had won an Oscar. She received three additional Oscar nominations. She was in two hit franchises with a total of 8 films and she started movies that growth the total of $6 billion worldwide and she did all that before she was 30 years old. So there's a reason why she could demand 20 million a movie for a bit. She's got nothing to prove either artistically, commercially, so if in this next chapter of her career, she wants to do lucrative projects or just Indies, let him deal with the fuck she wants to do.

"Old when this broadcast was on the air. 1943 she became obviously Big star in her own big star. Yeah, she had Murphy Brown for many years on TV. That was a great show. Did you like that? Shall not that much. I loved it. It was so good. So good. Wasn't one of my I do like Candice Bergen, but I'm not a huge fan of Murphy minutes. She was obviously I like the the premise of the show. I just never really, uh Got into that She was in the movies as well. I mean, she was an actress besides a TV, you know, star. She was a movie star as well. Um, yeah, And she wrote a book too. I think I don't know the name of the book that she wrote a book talking about growing up with, right, uh, a a dummy. You know, Charlie McCarthy has basically her brother, right? That's funny. Uh oh, yeah, we're all hope you're enjoying this episode of Charlie McCarthy. Let's go back. To May 16th 1943 special guest, Claudette Colbert. I will warn you at the very end of this broadcast. It goes long and NBC has to chop it off. So You will hear them kind of talking towards the end. But what happened back then? It was live radio and if you were going along You know, NBC or CBS. They would have to cut you off right at the bottom of the hour or top of the hour when the show ended, so you will hear a very abrupt ending. So just want to let you know that that's how it aired back in 1943. Here's the conclusion now. The Charlie McCarthy shell..

"Takes the aggressive one note conflicts of the action genre and builds whole networks of resentment out of them this lens the picture a weird authenticity. Despite the general doping penis the plot none of the actors feel like they're posturing. You really are waiting for every scene to break out and violence. This is a testament to singleton's vision and to his incredible facility with actors. He gets them all to commit. I think that is true and well-set aalyah love that while bill. Bill happens to be listening. I'm also a diehard black hat fan and you made me watch it just talking about so. I just To communicate via blank. Check to bill. Thank you for turning me onto the man and getting to read his writing but also fellow blackadder over here. I type of the black hat built and this movie made any opening weekend griffin. I'm trying to do the math. Six blackhawks did fifty million dollars a huge huge huge opening weekend. Like the this was Movies do not open that big very often at one time. I remember it being kind of a mind. Blowing number. Is june six two thousand and three a knocking off. One of the biggest hits of the year griffin. What's finding nemo this ice cold. A this is one of those periods. They burn my brain. But the other thing is i just remember vividly that everyone was like well. The matrix is the biggest movie of the year. It's impossible matrix is the most anticipated thing the matrix sequel is going to be like the fucking phantom menace and then Nemo ended up being the highest grossing film and obviously well we'll go with number three griffin Is a comedy. The finding nemo has made one hundred forty million dollars. Just african funding email was the highest grossing pixar movie until nfo and phone until incredible to or remember toy story maybe incredible Yeah yeah anyway. But i remember in knocked off the lion king. It was the biggest animated film ever number. Three two comtrex toppled. I'm stupid fucking idiot. Oh yes to number three common yup movie star comedy huge hip number. Three is a huge loss oil colossal. Oh is bruce almighty break talking about how big the box office was david. Yes matrix has its big opening in may finding nemo bruce almighty opens to seventy fast and furious opens to fifty like by the first week of june. You've had like five movies open over fifty million dollars this is. This is just a classic box office game where it's hit. This was the last great american blockbuster number because number three is a movie that is not the kind of hit that these others were but was sort of a little. Bit of a sleeper of fun action caper movie big on some bowl It's director who eventually fast and furious talion sleeps. It's way to one hundred million dollars. Exactly with wall norton and charleena's and most staff who jason nathanson reds. How good the summer of two thousand and three was that. That italian job was to simmering. People i remember that came out and people were like. Why do they make the italian job with like americans like this stinks and the people saw him with. It's kind of fun. Yeah if it wasn't called. The italian job was just called italy. Heist you'd be like this movie was fucking cool like yeah but because you have to compare it like michael caines performance you know. Yeah by like the italian job remake for sure. It's a fun man. Thousand three was my right before my senior that summer the summer before my senior year of college too so i was like really coming into myself and loving movies and i'm remembering this last little beach lifeguard bartender couple nights a week but this was a great. I saw a lot of these movies in the theater and it was a killer summer. Yeah that's good. Let's keep going. Sorry david. oh no number. Five is griffin already. Metro-dade suzy everyone thought would be the matrix reloaded it which was a huge hit massive so he was like a big hit. Yeah but i have not watched reloaded or revolutions. I've only seen them once both in John david is trying to end this episode. And you've just baited him so well this is that i. I hated him on purpose. Because i'm kind of want to be talked into watching them. Well this is the year i would say right with a with a waitress for coming. This is the year to dip back into them. I you know. Just text me while you're watching them. And i can help or just come over. Just come over. I'll do that. i'll give you some rants griff. I just wanna shout out number six's daddy daycare a film. I think you've seen many times. It was my sister's favorite movie for many years. I probably conservatively have seen a twenty five times. i argue. That movie is funny. But i don't know if it's just stockholm campaigning. For nancy. meyers to remake it right. Absolutely number seven is x. Men to another two thousand three. Yeah blockbuster seventy million dollars best x. Men movie unquestionably still. Yes without a doubt talk about movie even close openings to a movie ever that night crawler sequences great opening role and talk about big hits directed by sex criminals number eight. You've got wrong number wrong. Turn wrong wrong. Terrorize douche coup. Remember that one. They took a wrong turn. It's kinda like drew cannibals. Or it's like a hillbilly you know like sorta hills have is the abrams road or is joy reid the one that he wrote joy. Reid is the one that's movie rights. Good with walker our boy. There's a wrong turn coming out this year to l. What are they ate. How many are there now. I think it's a remake. It seems like i never saw the array. Didn't yeah that's crazy. Wow we are okay because another appalachian horror movie okay. Number ninety s the inlaws. Which one is that grip. Oh that's the fucking remake of the great movie with michael douglas. So the original broke. The original is fucking peter. Falk and alan arkin is like quietly. One of the best american comedies ever made and then they did a big budget remake with michael douglas and albert brooks but also candice bergen and ryan reynolds a bucket. Suburban reynolds is one of the there you go. Huge huge bomb and number. Ten is one of the sleeper huge sleeper hits of the year. Bend it like beckham. Like one of those crazy. Oh hung around at the box office for like months. Charming people like you know open to nothing and just kind of slowly built two thousand three look. I was seventeen years old. It was a great time. Yeah this is probably the best we ever had i. Yeah i do think of that. As like was that the time. I was happy. Whale rider is opening this week. I saw that. And i remember seeing that in theaters. Yeah good movie. Yeah schick on in two thousand and three and you forget that like. I just read that book greatest movie ever about one thousand nine hundred nine. Where like and like..

michael douglas albert brooks michael caines alan arkin jason nathanson ryan reynolds Reid five movies candice bergen one hundred million dollars twenty five times fifty million dollars Bill one hundred forty million doll this week griffin One peter fifty seventy million dollars

I don't know what you want to have a good 2021 call us again. Thank you. Very by. How long do we have to say Happy? New Year to people until February, Huh? It goes like this. January, February, March, April, Man, June, July or August of Tom Bird. September, and by the way, I didn't win the lottery. I'm sorry. Where did you get a scratcher? Remember? I told you I had a dream with a phone number in it. Did I tell you that? I think you did. I think you did. I hope I didn't lose. That is now I think you did. I don't know if you mentioned fully committing going through with a lottery, But, you know, we talked about the Brian Williams podcast free Brian Williams about him lying on the air. I believe nothing that I say that you say frankly. Don't know if you don't me about it. I think you did. But I might be lying. I think I did. So if I didn't or for those who don't recall or didn't know I had a dream and there was a phone number in it. I don't remember whose phone number it was. I wanted to remember it, so I was like bop bop Ba bop Ba Baba, right, Pa, Pa, Pa, Pa, Pa, Pa, Pa. But the problem is when you have numbers like so I thought, Well, I'm going to play the lottery because I believe That numbers are a way of connecting. With people on the other side. Mm. You know what I mean? Look, all right, all right. So, like I have a piece of Plexi glass in front of me right now, consider that a membrane separating me from the other side. Right, so there there are spirits on the other side, and I feel like that's their way of being able to communicate with you because they can't speak to you. Right? Okay. So I thought Somebody is telling me to play these numbers. So if the numbers are let's just say, um 64512 to 5, okay? Well now. There's so many different combinations of that that I can play. Yes, I could play six and four and five or I could play 64 51. 22 You know what I'm saying? See the number? Yes. I'm not giving you the number. So there are two competing numbers. I'm not giving you all my winning open. I go and play the numbers and then win big and not give you a cut. All right, let me change the numbers. 6451223. Yes, I do, By the way chance to question 64512 to 3 so you could play. Six and four. You could play 51 if you're playing the Powerball. You could play. Well, there's 720 different ways that you could organize that number. How do you know that? Six Factorial found out How many different numbers there are in that lineup, Okay. And then you do six times, five times, four times three times two times one Which, by the way, that's a good tip. Yeah, I'm gonna give you another one right here too. Okay. Okay. Hang on, three times two times. One. If this is a fun fact, for all you kids out there, listening How many different ways could a baseball manager set a starting lineup of nine players? You know who do they want to bat 1st and 2nd and 3rd and 4th. I'll tell you how many different ways they could do it. 362,880. Wow. They gave us that in high school were like, what are you talking about? That's not true. There is like nine different ways to do it. Or maybe 81 if you do, nine times nine. Okay. Can we just do one through seven? Okay, 1234567. So we want to do seven different numbers. I'll tell you how many times you could do that. But you don't just tell me explain it. So then what you would do if they're seven individual digits, then the way to determine your different ways of organizing those numbers. You could do 1234567. You could do 2345671. Okay. It's all those 7654321. So here's how you would figure that out. You would do how many different digits do we have? Seven. So do seven. Times, six times five times four times three times two times one okay There are 35,280 different ways that you could organize a seven digit number. That's why phone numbers worked for so long with just seven digits. Okay, so and and its people remember things in threes and fours. Did you know that That's also part of the reason why it's the Phone number has seven digits. Oh, is that right? Yeah, but Pop, pop, pop pop, Papa, But can I ask you do you go seven times six?
