Fresh "Cancun" from Anna Davlantes
"A good question. I I don't think we'll have to worry about that. But, yeah, you know, there's only been one other season 2005 where we had so many storms that we exhausted. The list. They put out every year a 21 named storms. So we're into the Greek out back right now, And we have data that went across the Yucatan lost a little punch. Although we're hearing that there were 90 plus mile per hour winds down there, Carmen del Playa and a playa del Carmen, I'm sorry, and that's on the Northeast. You can coast Over by cash, Mel and Cancun. I'm sure many listening have been down there at one time or another. One of our local viewers here is down there of on vacation and simply video and wow. That was one angry Caribbean ous. You can imagine, with a hurricane coming in and they're low lying down there. There's no elevation to the terrain, so storm surges. Grow. Hurricanes run over that that area at piece of real estate pretty easily. Now the thing is headed north. And, you know, Paul, this has every Is providing every indication will be the fifth name Storm to go to Louisiana alone. And the 11 names Storm to hit the lower 48 that has never happened before. And we have records on hurricane landfalls going back to 18 51 for the Lord 48. It's never happened in the lower 48 that we've had 11 named storms. The previous record was 1916. When we had 99 named storms go into the country and for leave the Anna to get five of them. This will be the third hurricane. From all indications that hits this one will hit little farther east in Louisiana means New Orleans is going to bear. Little more than brunt of the storm. Fortunately, it'll be a category one probably not stronger, and it may start weakening. The little zit approaches the coast because the water temperatures have dropped down there and autumn a little bit and there's going to be awesome windshear, but wow, those folks have undergone quite a season. Tom. When does this season And when is the, uh, the storm season? The Hurricanes when we done and then I'm gonna take into the winter season, But are we coming to the end of it? Yeah. November 30th Paul. So we got a little ways to run and there have been tropical cyclones that have gone later. As these ocean temperatures rise with climate change. We're getting some of these tropical systems to occur and more of them outside of that. Conventional June through November Atlantic Basin hurricane season, So it'll be interesting to see if we do that this year. The storms that occurred later in the season tend of the squalid rain producers on our coastline so they can affect Florida and coastal areas. But you tend to get a big jet stream to develop in the colder months across the U. S. And tropical systems do not like jet streams there not like storms up here that developed in part because of the jet stream where there are no jet streams of the tropics. And that's what sets a tropical storm like a hurricane aside apart from you know the storms that bring us our blizzards, The temperatures are uniformly warm across a hurricane. Whereas in our storms you get cold here on one side, warm water on the other, even at Tornado zone, one side of our storms and snow storms on the other. That doesn't happen in hurricanes. But make it a wind from that system as it comes up and developed into a non tropical system and that would be affecting us on Thursday, maybe a little rain as well. Now I do want to take before I let you go. And since I don't get to do this often with you, but what kind of winter are we? Are we in for overall? I'm not gonna hold you to it. But, you know, it's been about five years since we had member that horrendous winner. What's nota blizzard like every day ever Since then it's been really fairly temperatures to couple of. Are we in for a moderate, mild winter? Are we in trouble? You know what? We've got a lot anemia out the equatorial Pacific. That's a cooling of the ocean waters. And you may say, Well, why does that affect us and affect the weather? Globally in many ways, and what we found about winters that we have your in Chicago is their bottle. You can get periods of Arctic air and then other periods of warm here, But we come through the records and their tails to be a slight by us toward either a near normal or slightly above normal temperature winter but also an above normal precipitation. Winter in Latinas. Oh, and that seems to be a good that, by the way, the fact that the cold is hit early on and that we've had snow relatively early doesn't necessarily indicate the nature of the winter coming up back. We found we had a warm summer around here, and we found that 60% of the winners that follow a warm summer are themselves warmer than normal. Doesn't mean you won't get a snowstorm or even a couple of them And it doesn't mean it won't be cold at times or uneven that you get an Arctic outbreak of so called polar vortex. But it does mean that we'll get fewer of them, and that will be more warmer than normal days than colder than normal date on the whole. Now we'll see if that's how it works out. By the way, the early indications for November that will emerge from this cold pattern and November may itself Trend back toward an above normal temperature regime, which really is dominated most of the months of this year, so we'll see if that works out. But that's certainly the way it looks right now. I look forward to that time less than a minute left, but I want I'd like to do what.

Other original spent have tried the other ones. But that is so. I hope that this hope folks In this eighth ladies.

"It'll be fine but I can watch like a movie or two every day and I need to like the office green. I WANNA get into puzzles. Yeah I've been doing a lot. Weren't speaking of things that are pleasantly monotonous back to Real Cancun real quick. Actually I don't think it was that pleasantly monotonous. I found it very pleasantly monotonous than that is why I recommend it. I like Verner Herzog enjoy. Well it does feel like it does make you really Makes you aware of I think the particular like Bonham Mary Slash MTV style of reality television or media making because so much so many of the rhythms of it are still even though this was you know five years before Jersey shore they? That's what I was GONNA say. That's what's funny is that this was a failure and I essentially did the same thing but with like more interesting people. Yeah and over a longer period of time and that's Jersey short but that's also it's not just that they found more interesting people. It's that people understood how to be on reality television more by the time the Jersey shore rolled around and then even like the best. I mean the first season is still the best season of Jersey shore because they know how to be on reality television but they don't know what they look like yet on reality television they become self-aware. It goes downhill so fast true but the show is sort of pleasant because of that the First Season Jersey shore is actually like it's great. I think it's great own saying that. There was a weird kind of like innocence at a high kind of a genuine heart. That in retrospect knows they're like at I think at the time we were all sort of being a little skeptical about it or maybe maybe not but I mean Halloween. It was fascinating because like half of them weren't Italian and sort of showed the universality of culture as the thing that anyone can decide is there. Is there identity but also beyond the Guido culture thing and beyond it being like a documentary of you know a subculture? I guess I feel like I can't remember if I've said this on the podcast. Or just you guys off offline but like I do feel that the more I think about Jersey Shore. The in more feels like this sort of multi year project to like excise to thousands culture out of pop culture because it was basically like showing the most exaggerated cartoonish version of all the stuff that you see in the real. Cancun and all the stuff that had been on seasons of real world old before that and other reality shows and and the the type of clubbing. The methodology of clubbing. Like the music like all of it kind of like just pumped up to eleven to like make it into like an object of mockery for a lot of people even now like I would agree that there's a part in that show. Most of it is sort of a send up of of this but it also it has more of their something to believe in. I can't believe I'm saying this but with Jersey you can texture that when I was watching the real Cancun I think I expected that same texture of just like. Oh that person so ridiculous but like with time you kind of grow fond of them in you realize like that. They're getting this kind of sense of who they are through this. Remove right and on your right that it so even though it's only a few year at five years of or it's east five years before Jersey shores ago this was two thousand four key managers. Each show is oh nine believe so so it's not that much that's pass but the difference in. I mean these people I think are just so much more Not Reserved but they're their personalities are flat in Real Cancun to see and it's also made a very one. Oh one level mistake of just casting a bunch of like interchangeable blondes to the literally cannot tell apart like I couldn't understand what was going on for so long so I'm like who's that guy in the all the do like half the dudes look the same to it's just like and he does better about that over time like not out. Roman from party down. Yes yes party down. I saw subway out social media starting a party down. Watch for the yeah. That's a good downer. A fantastic show recommended how I think also Jersey shore came out of the EM TV documentaries MTV true life they had so it's that works. I'm going to the Jersey shore and they must have known always that those episodes were particularly good and that that was a just a gold mine reality television and that's the difference in like know whoever's producing these episodes those episodes of of true life where it's like you stumble across a scene that has legs that has like has some places you can go within it As opposed to just setting up the sort of Cookie Cutter Situation of like we're GONNA throw a bunch of young hop people in a house and gives them alcohol. That's not a scene like that's just like a. That's a very actually pretty banal as opposed to like this very specific place in New Jersey. Where very specific kind of like party culture happens? Yeah and I've been thinking about Jersey shore because I've been watching Summer House which is basically Jersey shore but with wasps. It's just interesting. Is Like ethnography because again? They're kind of boring and repressed but then occasionally they do get really drunk and reveal some weird thing about themselves. Yeah subculture in way repression as subculture. Well I had never watched this. I remember being in theaters though I feel like I had some soothing music theater. That's summer wouldn't it? Among later it was like okay. This is a street street because he was. It lost money at the box office. Yeah I think I watched it on Tivo. Maybe like the first Tibo. Oh wait I thought it was. Oh four wikipedia say it was. It was oh three that it came out so it must have been about spring break a year before no us going to spring break around this time. Bet that now you're realistic. I mean I didn't go to Cancun but it's it was totally realistic to me The only thing that wasn't realistic was the fact that there were so many people who were who had like these kind of relationships whereas in my experience it's like you in your small group and then you hang out with a couple of people in the next night. Different people feel so embarrassed. Every time honestly. This full month has been a therapeutic How do I feel about my time doing all this spring breaks but yeah I mean it was pretty a lot of like emmy the did you go to a club? Nightclub Cucamonga. Yeah I called. Well I actually don't remember but I was thinking when I was reading the way the media about this another After finish and I'm like man. I think I booked Or No it was. It was after after he was reading articles about uh spring break like not being canceled continuing to go on spring break with Gerona virus. I was like I think I bumped through. S T S or maybe it was like s but it was obviously in these travel agencies that exclusively working spring break. It's like it's still the same agencies which seemed afraid. It's probably the same. It's cut off James since like where the boys are probably services. I am but I don't remember. I don't remember the names of any of the places that we went to but as I talked about in our newsletter for spring break month. I'm in if you want our newsletter you should subscribe to our Adriaan but the honestly the best spring break was the Yankees spring break. Which was In Hanna City each a now had a club. That was very real Cancun. Some place like that in. I want to go so bad. It looked so fun. I mean I've been to clubs in Vegas. That's the closest thing that sound appealing. Because we're we've been under quarantine and emily's I'd Just like a bunch of body smashing together now. My thoughts like that. So you're responsible than it does now only eight now in general. That's actually navy good. I saw one business advertising a strip club that they were gonNA stay open. An offer dances through a glass panel and also antibacterial wrestling weight. That's a waste of anti we. Are they wrestling and antibacterial -posedly but probably not really but it's really a funny image and a great idea because it did make me think. Like what if everyone was doused in antibacterial your skin reading so it wouldn't be an ice but we party. A club Coco Bongo. Let's go back. To Club Coco Bongo. I'm sure I'm sure it's like thriving right now. A disease. Well I was to watch real Cancun Very important chapter in the history of American spring. Break.

"This season is going to be even more exciting. We've got some great guests lined up so far. We booked a couple of guys from the band Wang Chung and that is it seriously. I'm not gonNA live. We are under booked in its problem. I had to call the wing. Chun guys myself their friends and doing me a big favor so anyone listening to this helped me out. If you know Timothy. Shallow may tell him to return my damn calls already. Listen to the Ron Burgundy podcasts. On the iheartradio APP apple podcasts. Or wherever you get your podcasts Welcome back tonight call. We're talking about spring breaks though 'cause it's still spring break March and today we're talking about the most two thousand three movie ever made the Real Cancun. This movie came out when reality shows were getting really popular and the movie business was thinking maybe reality shows were the future of movies as well that all people wanted was a reality show but longer and on screen. I mean it's just the execution it didn't land like they thought they conducted a nationwide search for the sixteen hottest spring breakers in America and ended up with these people people who are also boring that they make what might be one of the most boring movies ever made but yeah that to me is what I think is interesting about it in a weird way. It's a cinema very tag. It's so boring. Vanguard Saga apparently loves it. Yeah I this is amazing to find out so this was from the Globe and Mail. There's an article that will kushner shown outs Burner Hertzog did catch one documentary. He quote liked very much. Herzog says over the phone with the Global Mail is voices smooth insured monotone. He seeks month monotony. No which I think monitoring all but not not anyone to do. I forget who made it very about spring break in Cancun Mexico and the sole focus of the film was who who who would get laid I. It was so straightforward. I liked it for that. Is that okay? I asked somebody who has had the honor of sitting across the table. From from Mr Herzog from Herzog. I did my best. I think that really sums it up. It's a very very hertzog opinion to have because it is because I think even when you start to get into Y. This film was a failure. These are all like arguments that Hertzog House about documentary like this is the like I think for our is now. This is such a chance. Apparently doctored and kind of tweaked and voice overed reality products. But I feel like that's totally. His vibe though is like you know. Print print the legend Lake. Not The you know whatever weight which do you print in which do not print print the legend. Yeah you put the legend. I don't really care about who whether or not somebody was exactly saying that. Line in that context that sort of thing which is kind of I feel like the first wave of sort of criticism around. Tv was really about that like well. It's not reality but I think we've all been nerd to that at this point because documentary is also always like structured in ways. I'm narrative is and that's why we all like Ross mcelwee eased Sherman's March We all love it. We all love. It is to know it's supposed to be a documentary about Sherman's march to the sea. It's like a piece of southern History General Sherman. And then let him to sell me on this before. It's so good you would both love it. It's supposed to be now guys now. Time to watch Sherman's yes it. It ends up. Just being this guy going around the south and talking to all of his ex-girlfriend's document are- just like about himself. And it's very good but it's about how documenta early documentary is is inherently right personal. Nothing is objective. Met Don the Real Cancun. The deal the cast of characters is very. I mean they were cast correct like these. These people were scouted basically they were scouted. Some of them seem to be. Asu Students Lee. Yeah but they're from all over the twins. Of course you've got the guide. He's never had alcohol. Before you've got Laura Ramsey who has been who who is the only person who went on to have an acting career of these people. It's a it's the casting at the beginning when they were interviewing like I think the third casting call when they were injured doing everyone that was. I thought the best part of the total Christopher guest type opening. Is this going to be like a comic gem and then it was that part of it feels a little bit like pornography when they're like no do you like to party tell us about partying especially when they have the twins so you guys don't like to watch each other naked nearly you gross do whatever they have been there like? We're going to challenge that notion later in this movie as one. Tiny plot ARCS. Yeah they one of the mid like they're barely arc's plot bumps the Bulls. Yeah isn't that feel relaxing in a way right now to nothing so absurdly low stakes? No because well for one. There's so much body contact in this at all I was doing contacts and how much I miss it. There's a lot of that and then it was so the twins particularly were so cokie that I couldn't like I was. I felt like I caught it. By osmosis like is such a strong reaction to the twins. The twins are horrible. Like there's something off about them. Yeah I will say all twins have a connection that we non twins can never understand. It's not that it's not their connection though. It's like their vibe. It's very weird and jaw clenched. She doesn't it reminds you how bad the early two thousand also like again just like don't romanticize this. It was gross. Nobody had eyebrows still. Yeah there the other direction with the eyebrows. As we'll see after this routine is we're GONNA shoot down. Eyebrows are going back to the land. I agree I mean I. I can't even think of like now. It feels also super unheard of to do a whole plotline around like this person has stated that they don't WanNa drink and so we're going to make it a gag to peer pressure them to drink like that not like something like something that would happen in a movie like a scripted film yet Like an American pie or something. We can't hardly wait. Yeah play the music. Cue from can't hardly wait. It's the cool nerd from can't hardly wait who gets drunk and becomes cool and everyone likes him. Yeah but also guys like the most the only real character but I would actually. I would argue against that. I think he is the most doctored character in the whole. Show me. If you're GONNA make them these types on a spring break trip them like at least give us some editing that makes it seem like these people have any personalities and will the best scenes are like with him and Who is the the two black guys? And there's the bigger guy who doesn't get any girls. What was his name? Giral and all your giral giral and they like have this really sweet friendship where they're just sort of commiserating about like not being able to talk to girls and yet in a way. That doesn't feel like sad sake. Like wine mopey. Why don't like in Selley? Why don't girls like me? It's just like figuring out life and it's it was a nice relation. They're they're in a different movie on. Yeah amount plotline to with. Is the girls sky that he likes. Yeah yeah with that plotline of Lake. The girl like to see two people in the house getting Sorta just floating the whole time and then he hooked up with somebody else and she's like well. You're supposed to wait and fight harder for me. He's like we're only here for four days advice. Well she she came in like a real was she the one in the custody at the beginning to where she had like this this whole speech about how she only wants to be with a guy were. She's like wondering where he is writing double o race hard to get like. Yeah she was like the Nice guys. Those are the ones that I like. Don't end up with 'cause I'm like. He seemed like a head of she seemed from. You know what I mean. Hasn't yet issues. The homeless most relatable person on. Yeah in this movie I mean show because it just demonstrates why reality. Tv baby does work better in a TV format. There's not enough time build anything out on these people. I've been watching Bravo's summer house which is basically like this but summer and over a long period of time entire summer but only on the weekend and we only on weekends no they only go to the summer house on the weekends so much transportation to drive their goodness to stay in the summer house. Once don't you just live in the summer like right? You have to listen to my new podcast summer house quarantine been making to stop myself from going crazy Because they all work in Manhattan and they that's all they can afford the share house for the summer is that they have. Here's John Gummer House. Montauk MONTOC Okay and the main characters in the first two seasons are twins called the work as they call themselves. The work is circus in a really forced way over and over again. Yeah it's not gonNA listen to my podcast about it but it made me also understand. Emily's love of terrorists house. 'cause I think just spending weeks with people makes you develop affection for them right weird ending. It's not a forced like you don't have to be around them all the time. So you're just having a normal life alongside people. Yeah and boring people. Bring people reveal layers over a long period of time? I say none of you guys are using this opportunity that get into terraced house. That watch terraced house if you watch Summer House Summer House. That's the barter in the near martyr. Economy of three emily. Hey who's martyring things? I'm yeah I need more clutch. Yeah I need to. I mean I haven't even really started the watching part of this whole experience because I only got a couch yesterday but I I will be a spending a lot of time on the couch said. Oh there's a limit to the amount of screen time that any human can tolerate us and you come up against it faster than you think. You think. I'M GONNA watch ten movies every day..

"I'm in Los Angeles and with me on the other line is Molly Lambert and Plus Lynch. And we're going to start off this week with the night email from our listeners solely. I think I'm pronouncing that right. She writes longtime listener. First-time E. COLLAR. I saw this link on Reddit and could only think of this podcast. It's video of drunk. People in Miami unbothered by Corona virus in the name of spring break watching a herd of people rationalize the irrational through. The POWER OF ALCOHOL IS PROFOUND. When might even say Colt Lake? Also thank you guys grew reporting on the issues at hand with their usual dose of Dark Salinas. This pot has been both an uplifting and informative resource in trying times wishing you all safety and health. Thank you so much solely again. I hope I'm pronouncing her name right. yeah definitely saw this making the rounds this week on the socials. Miami remains undaunted in the face of Corona virus. Are We surprised? I'm mean ring. Break is all about a immortality complex though I mean just poisoning yourself and harming your body over and over and over again. Help you or helium. Six A hedonistic celebration again. I blame this more on all the city's for not shutting down in time I think also a big pile of blame on S. T. S. The travel agency that has been booking lake massive medications. They have not cancelled as recording. I don't think that they had cancelled anything. Which is mind boggling? But then your then you have to think about the fact that under normal conditions. This is a travel agency. That's just like taking a big risk on people getting their stomachs pumped in style. So maybe they're just used to that but I was astonished that there was a video about one guy going around where he was like if I have to go down thrown of ours like waiting for the spring break for a long time so I got to do it is it. Just doesn't seem like even like surely people are like at least a little bit stressed or something right like. I just can't even if you decided that it wasn't going to kill you like why would you be in the mood for this at all? I can't get feel like they also made the mistake of being like. It doesn't young people in the news while and then they had to walk that back. Yeah probably a lot of young people were like well doesn't affect me. So yeah it's been really Quite embarrassing for for a lot of millennials and Gen xeres. I want to say I mean for what you were saying. Though about. The city's like the mayor of Miami is not happy about this. He's like trying to get people to leave quote where he said. Spring break is over over Miami Beach Mayor. Dan Gelber says we cannot become a petri dish for a very dangerous virus. Spring break is over. The party is over man okay. Miami says the Party is over. Well I mean we have to wait until pit bull ways and the mayor of Miami but but that's pretty Mr Worldwide knows that this is a worldwide pandemic. Yeah NO MR worldwide is a collectivist again. Yeah I would assume so. I don't I haven't actually heard from listening. He's calling tonight call and let us know. The official hip will stance spring break. Twenty twenty pit bull records a special track uplift like does his version of the horrible Gal Gadot like celebrity. Imagine video but if he does like a party track. I'm going to weep like that break me. It will make me so happy here for I. Don't think there should be no corona virus novelty songs. I think just the Maudlin terrible but there's a version of fuck corona. That is the song. Fuck Katrina New Orleans bounce on that was called Fuck Katrina. Somebody didn't called flop. Kuroda been listening to that a lot makes me. It's great well we could put food. You guys know. I was obsessed at the from Italy of the guy planner them of the night off his balcony. But that's the artist is corona like Oh lagging. He's there are all sorts of current. Hardy songs tonight is a great song. It's a fantastic site try. I hated the song. Imagine it's in my top ten hated songs anyway. So I felt I was glad I was like finally everyone else's catch now. We can finally agree. This is imagine weekend all hate but yeah handedly killed the song. Yeah Jonny had imagine in his head because of it and all the parodies and he was like will you please put some other song in my head because I hate imagine and so. I started singing Mambo number five. I listen number five. Because when you're in very what heightened emotional stay. He feels Some just gets it gets Gigla yet. No I tried to make a quiet storm Max. 'cause I feeling so stressed out. I was like optimal mix dot quite home. Relax me but that it was like to emotional news too late at night. I'm just GONNA make a mix of nineties our song about like sitting in your room and staying home up in your room. Perhaps sitting up in your room picking at nothing depressing nothing. Yeah No. I've realized now that a lot of my music is too scary to listen to. Now I lay which is a line other time. Yeah I mean anybody who's been to a night call nights knows what I tend to play like some spooky vibes and that's not just for night call like that's my tasted music and a lot of it. I'm just put on for five seconds and I'm like nope nope can't listen to this right now. I feel that way about movies a lot of movies. I don't WanNa Watch specifically it. I was thinking I was like. I'm in the perfect mood for it. Follows now you tonight elation also really leaning into it. I didn't like the first time we saw it and covered it on. I know you guys are super hard. Yes but look. Who GETS THE LAST LAUGH? I enjoyed it. My husband's lose time seeing it. He enjoyed it. You were right all along you well. It's speaking of Florida on all counts. So what what's the situation with the Disney properties right now? Just knee world remains open. No they are all clear. Close now okay. Forced to close. There was an exception in the California Bill. They could stay open but they're not doing it because they don't want people to get current a virus at Disneyland. I believe IHEART radio PODCASTS. Own Jamie Loftus went the last day before Disneyland closed forever and had a had a great time but they shut it down and in Disney world. They did something seemingly worse. Which is that because people like travel to Orlando yet maybe just stuck in Orlando The president of Disney world did something where they like brought everybody out for one last fireworks show to be like. Hey you know we know. You're not getting disneyworld trips. So here's a little Nice. Thank you anyway of a firework show but it was like a billion people crowded in a plaza together. Oh my God such a bad idea. Yeah I've been appreciating that so far. My limited experiences outside people have been respecting the social distancing six feet but I know that that is not the case everywhere. I know a lot. People have been complaining. That people just don't seem to be a lot harder in New York. In a much denser. Space People is it definitely seems pretty easy in La if you are in an area that's not soup even if you are it's like you can as an American story. Your guys in space and more space have thought of that. She did shut down. They shut down the Chinese theater. They shut down all the big tourist attractions for Real Bourbon. Street IS SHUTDOWN IN NEW ORLEANS. And there's a really good cam network. I'm sure I've talked about before. Called Earth Cam. That just has live cams on a bunch of basically tourist areas around the world. And I've definitely been looking at those. I posted some spooky screengrabs. My twitter The other night but just Bourbon Street is totally empty. I watched just a rat run around and be the king of Bourbon Street and it was the battle. There's been a lot of good animal videos again. Like very Very annihilation any out to party. I think the people who are being ECO fascist about it and being like it's because the earth is like reclaiming. It's it's time are not good. Obviously but it's just yeah. It's not sorry. Bring it back right well and this will be coming before we talk about that. Yeah I think it just shows that we obviously also need to deal with climate change and talk about that in a way. It's all one problem. Yeah I think the thing that's driving me crazy right now. Is that like obviously like this is not unrelated to climate change like this is something that has been predicted for a longtime the ability for these mass pandemics to to break out because of climate change and like. I went out to take the trash out. Today I'm like I'm like I am way on one end of a scale as far as recycling food. Waste stuff like that. I'm hyper vigilant about it. And I tried to generate as little waste as possible so it was like bringing out my two little like trader Joe's bags trash and recyclables and just see people piled up like all their pizza boxes and stuff. 'cause everybody's just ordering delivery. I guess and Lake An ordering shit off of Amazon. It's just like Oh God. This is sort of compounding. It feels like a reckoning. Because it's like we're in techno feudalism where we have all this useless. I like Baroque stuff. We have the weirdest things that people don't actually need but we don't have any of the baseline things we actually do. Need and that but also flipside I will. I will just play devil's advocate and say that I think families who have little kids were creating a ton of trash right now and feel terrible about it but it's like I don't know even where to begin with that has everything Husky delivered and it's and it's not only individuals just this entire system that we've grown up and where it's just like. Oh you can order a cable that you need that comes in an entire box with shipping materials all over it and that makes and it's cheap so why not do it remember when people when bottled water was like a rich people thing. Yeah I remember when bottled water used to be made fun of a now everybody and now it's just how people drink water. Yeah it definitely feels like. We're being forced to walk back some of the things that everybody took for granted about how the world works again. Possibly for good because things aren't great. Never Forget avion is naive backwards total topic but I will just save. The one thing that this shift has made me consider is owning chickens. Which I know never wanted chicken I try. It's on my family on it and everyone was like we really like. Even my kids were like me. Don't want more animals to take care of like we're stretched so thin. That was the guys. I can't find any eggs. I don't have much to do. It's time to the chickens and they can even really edited chicken. I'll Alco parent chicken with you. 'cause I call yes call. Let's do that. Should GET WORRIED ABOUT BE EATEN BY COYOTE. And then he also not if it's in a coupe. What if that's sick? Do Start taking suggestions now for the name of the night. Call Chick yes your mascot. What a lot of this show doomsday peppers the other day. So you're in the mood for that. I it ended up being really funny not on purpose but it also had some good tips. I'm just GONNA say such as we'll also another friend of mine. My friend Lucy was saying she's a researcher for films and for the last like three months she was doing research on a film about a pandemic and read everything about pandemics and then Kinda like became not a proper but like bottle out of food as soon as she heard about corona virus and she said she was like the first person at the store. Doing it and the employees were like. Why are you buying so much food? She was like 'cause it's coming while we're all living in it now still can't find any toilet paper fine We're GONNA take a quick break and when we come back we're going to have a very special night call for a very special night correspondent. We'll be right back.

"Now chances are if you're a human living in this country you have had a Burrito but mission style Burrito are their own thing it's different than a Burrito you might get in San Diego or Arizona or Texas here to tell us what makes a mission style burrito emission salary Dow is Gustavo area no writer for the La Times and author of Taco USA. How Mexican food conquered America so the mission burrito first and foremost have to be humongous like huge? Huge huge here. The big as you could possibly get. That's your readily available in the United States and you also also have to be prepared like an assembly line so they don't just make them for you in the back that you have to see it in front of you because you basically make its water so you put in your rice. You could be white rice or Spanish rise. It'd be black beans or pinto beans. You put yourself that you put your choice of meat you put welcome more or less but soccer if you WANNA put cheese. That's fine and the most important thing you keep going down this assembly line. They wrap it up. They put it in foil. They might grill it on a press just a little bit and while out there it is for you. You eat it you keep it inside the foil because it just might explode you. Unwrap the foil. Take it off like pedals from a rose slowly but surely that is beautiful. I just cried a little Tapa Cotillard hearing that poetry when I see someone out in public unwrapping their burrito before they eat it. I want to murder them. I want to jump over tables and just like no. Take it away from them like I'm from child protective services like from BPS burrito protective services. Never ever this is my public service announcement under any circumstances. Do you release the Perito from the foil. It is there for a reason. Don't take the baby burrito out of its blankie. The foil is there to preserve the burritos integrity to keep it nice and tight so it doesn't leak but also I believe that he tightly wrapped burrito tastes better. Like if you've ever had a Burrito that's falling apart which is the worst happened to me yesterday actually. It just doesn't taste as good like everything's falling out so you're distracted but also there's something about that texture when everything is smushed together that you just get a nice rich dense bite instead of rice falling. Willy Nilly all over your lap. Very first mission. Burrito was a place called Fato. It's still in the making district invented by an immigrant from Mexico named several neon battles. He was from the State of Rhode Island Northern Mexico. He wants to Miller with Brita by the time he opened up this restaurant. And the mission district in the early nineteen sixties. He's telling readers one day. A bunch of firefighters come in. They said they were hundred of those small Britos that he sold wouldn't do so he said. Come back for the following. Del Bitter Brita for you guys. So I I. He combined to flour tortillas then just spread ingredients across the two or three years then folded them and these firefighters supposedly like the much and made enough business for him that he decided to go to a Tortilla making factory and ask them to make bigger tortillas huge far for actually a staple of northern Mexico. Not In those days. They just weren't made. They were small. Act Fara which is still there. It's still alive. Thankfully gentrification has it taken away just yeah according to the website fivethirtyeight dot com. Ben's favorite spot. Takuya Cancun opened in one thousand nine hundred three. Remember when Ben was talking about Takuya? Cancun and el-farah Lido being rivals. That people are super loyal to only one of these dockery as well. It turns out that the owners of Cancun worked fairly though when they first came to the United States. One of the owners Gerardo Rico told five thirty eight that the owners of Welfare Alito encouraged him to go out and opened his own place and those guys remained friends to this day. Rico told fivethirtyeight that most of Korea Cancun's recipes are a blend of Welfare Alito. And the Food. He ate growing up. And if you've never been to Takaya Cancun. It's a festive little restaurant with traditional colorful paper cutout banners hanging from the ceiling there yellow painted walls fake painted brick tropical murals. There's a lot going on but once you're inside it no longer smells like urine. So that is the history of Takuya Cancun. But what about the history of the Burrito? Where did the BURRITO come from? Reto comes from northern Mexico or more more specifically the Borderland Arizona Mexico Sonora Y Y Texas it was. It was somewhere along that line. Because that's where flour tortillas are digits historically this where else at Mexico except there that's line United States flour tortillas have always sold far more than corn tortillas. So what do you imagine? The first Burritos were like as far as the size and what was in them. Well what was in them of course is meat because in northern Mexico? Also that's one of the big beef producing regions of Mexico and got it in my Chuck Guy. She let go arrival. Maybe if you go out to along at a child I will you know but he does for lack of air terms though is definitely beat and maybe some feelings of rice and beans but most importantly the burritos were small. In fact the first three does to come into the United States. Going back to the nineteen thirties through the fifty. They were all small little Burrito and so when did they first make their way into the US and was it? I in a California or Texas. It's interesting because the first mass consumers of burritos were settled. These were the Mexican immigrants who were contract by farmers through an agreement with between the United States and Mexican governments who come into the United States and pick the crops during the four from the forties. Right up until the sixty in my book. Usa talk about how these the farmer they were trying to be nice and they thought. Oh Hey Mexican. Like beings and rice and tortillas and if we wrap it into these burritos Alita but the Brussels hated it because a lot of them were not familiar without food. It's like you know imagining you're someone from New England in nineteen twenty and also setting. You're dropped into Hawaiian. Yes we all that food. Even though it's technically American you're like what the Hell is all this talk about. How burritos moved nationwide from the West. Coast and from the southwest. The United States has been eating burritos now with good sixty years you know once he started having these PARCO empires like up in the North West Taco time. Then you have bill Tocco you have Taco Bell. You know they also breed but three really didn't explode until the nineteen ninety s and it was because she bought it. You have a guy named Steve L. Who Studies at the Culinary Institute of America DIFFERENT CISCO LATE NIGHTS GO get mission? Burrito goes back home to Denver once opening up a fancy restaurant but things themselves I think I could make Some money to fund my restaurant by opening up agreed. Oh stand selling those missions alboreto's and you know the rest of they say Israel so you know eaters. No as she bought live. That's basically an approximation of Ducati us in the mission district. What they make you use the mission Burrito okay. So if you're looking for hot BURRITO TIPS which who isn't go to my instagram your last meal. Podcast I was la a few weeks ago. I did a little TACO burrito crawl. And they're supposed about the best burrito that I probably had in a decade. So you're less podcasts. On instagram we're going to take a break when we come back then talks about what he eats when he runs a one hundred mile race.

"Ben One of the reasons that I I was excited to. This podcast was like my. I've known this answer for over twenty years and Might last meal would be a super veggie Burrito from Talk Real Cancun in San Francisco but the one on nineteenth and mission. Yeah not the one not the one on market no not the stabby one down there all stabby the one down market is really sketchy yours. Which is my favorite place get a Burrito? Is it really in San Francisco? Which is why I clutch my chest and got so excited. That's when you get out of the Bart you breathe Urine Yep totally and just walk on through it the cloud of urine and you go get your Burrito in the super. Vibrio is my favorite too and I'm not even a vegetarian. Yeah it's it's great and the part of the meal that is the real kicker for me is the green sauce. Guy Gives you like a little bag of slightly stale tortilla chips and then one thing that isn't that good no but with green sauce. It's fine because then there's a there's a little red salsa and there's a little green sauce it's kind of like an avocado tomatoes slurry thing and I'm always asking for five of those things and the guy always looks kind of like sure. Whatever but I mean I can see. They've got like a ten gallon jar of it not on for it. Yeah I wanted to bring a mason jar and just say I'll give you fifty dollars to fill this up. I was taken. There is in December ninety eight. We're the spanned who were from. San Francisco called crumb and it was on our first record and Mark Weinberg. Who was the guitar player? Took me in nick from death cab there and he's like the place. I was Vegan at that time. And they would do that. You breathe not cheese cream and then and you. You don't ask any questions like what? What else do whatever and immediately this. This became this thing like I just had burritos before. Obviously but this is the first time I'd had a proper mission. Burrito at this period obviously Internet existed. But it certainly wasn't the spoil everything catch all spoiler that it is now where nothing remains a secret for longer than a half second so at the time and I'm sure there are probably travel websites in the world and probably mentioned this place but you know people weren't carrying around smartphones. That told them where to get the best Burrito in town or seven hundred feed saying twenty Best Burritos. Everybody out those less. Now you're right. That makes me so happy because two thousand and two I think is when I discovered it. I'm from the bay area but I went to school and she go and then when we come down to the city that was the spot we would go and years ago when I became obsessed with last meals Along time ago before I had this podcast and that was always my last meal too. Yeah but that. Burrito is like celebrity status to me. Get nervous taking people there because I'm afraid if they don't like it that I don't know it's like my favorite band that I don't really like to tell people. Listen to because if they don't like it will hurt my feelings. Yeah it's very personal that Burrito. Yeah totally and I had gone back through San Francisco. I think in early ninety nine and I had I was in there and getting a Burrito and somebody that I knew Saami in there with the Burrito and very very accusatory was like who told you about this place. Why are you here and once I told Mark had sent me there he was like okay. Okay cool back off but he kind of insinuated like don't tell anybody about this. Which was the style of the time right? You kind of you know in the nineties you kind of had a secret you knew about a secret place or a secret thing and you didn't want people to know about you didn't immediately blasted out to the world like. Hey I'm at Takuya. Cancun this is the best burrito ever to your almonds of followers or whatever. I'm sure you have also been privy to the Cancun versus fair Lido Argument it's like the PATS versus Gino's they're made mere blocks from each other and it really just comes down to like. Which one did you have? I exactly I've never. I've never known somebody who's like I used to go to Cancun but now I go to fairly no pure nostalgia. Yeah Walk me through what you love about it in the components of it and the things that make that burrito special okay Well I've already mentioned the green sauce that is used for dipping chips into and then also as I take bites of the of the greenhouse goes into the BURRITO and I like to get point where my mouth is just on fire where it's like almost not tasting it anymore but you know it is of course a flour Tortilla there. Is You know a good helping of rice in there. There are beans Pinto or black. Have you choice? And then there is avocado and then if you choose sour cream and cheese in there as well but and that is like put on the grill and like warmed up. There is something about what happens to Avocados when they're heated slightly heeded. I can't think of a dish where you would quote unquote. Cook the Avocados. You'd heat them up but there's a particular kind of like buttery nece. Avocados have in general because of all the fat but then when you heat them up flavor kind of seeps in everything else just just slightly take that first bite and you get that like melt melty avocado and they don't use guacamole. Which is one of the things we always loved. It slices of Avocado. Isis is very rare in a burrito. I think the thing that makes perfect burrito is the distribution. Well that's one of the things because you don't want to take the bite and you get all the sour cream in one bite. I like mine to be really mushy outside. I want everything to be married. And then I'll do Mexican coke in a bottle. Oh yeah that's the meal. The meal is the chips and the green sauce as much as I want like. I'm on death row right. I was framed for crimes did commit. That's why I'm there. Let's just say triple homicide? Ooh Big? Yeah so triple homicide. I was like I was framed as much greenhouses. I want bring me a mason jar of it. I'll break vegan today. I'm going to have the full flavor. Yeah and then. I'm going to have the Mexican coast like the the media later. Like the bigger one one. The Big One the state's. GonNa Pay Exactly. They're GONNA pay fifteen dollars for his last meal. Ben Gabbard wants a Veggie Burrito from the nineteenth admission location of Talk Correa Cancun in the mission district of San Francisco California United States of America that Burrito is stuffed with rice beans cheese onion CILANTRO SALSA SOUR cream and very important slices of Avocado and to wash down. He wants a Mexican coke in a bottle now. A Lotta people prefer the Mexico because it's made with cane sugar and doesn't have that high fructose corn syrup.

"Is the lead singer and guitar player in death had for Cutie? He was half of the postal service and needed the side project called all-time quarterback that I used to listen to in the early outs. Then is also an ultra marathon runner which means the races are fifty miles or more hard to get your mind around. He and his fellow long distance. Runners are very focused on getting enough calories. A friend was one hundred miler and he. Just here's kind of coming down the trail use. Here's somebody yelling. Butter butter butter. What the Hell and like the guy comes in and then is crew just gives him two sticks of butter and he just eats them both and then just goes off down the that sounds horrible but I can totally see a moment where you would like butter sounder star to eat butter plane which most people are completely disgusted by butters amazing. It's so good. We'll talk more about long distance running and the cravings that come with it later in the show and there are two kinds of people in this world those who love Brunch and those who love to hate it. I mean at this point. I think it's just considered irredeemably basic. I chat with writers Sadie Stein about America's love hate relationship with brunch inspired by a piece you wrote for The New Yorker and learn the history of the Burrito with award-winning writer and journalist Gustavo Area. No author of Taco USA. How Mexican food conquered America? But I by TAT with Ben Geared. I understand that you have beef with Brunch. Yeah I I I really dislike Brunch as a concept you're about to get mobbed people are going to be coming out. You would not with pitchforks but like regular folks right gloves brunch. Yeah both Rachel my wife and I have this collective rant. Let's say that you and I were beginning a friendship. We had madam. You're Kinda to hit it off and we were thinking maybe we'll hang out outside of this context of this podcast and what you suggested that we do was. Why don't we go to skill it on a Saturday afternoon? Basically and let's having not eaten anything really that day and let stand out in front for up to ninety minutes with a cup of coffee waiting for those four to stop camping out on that table with their mimosas. That would be the end of our potential friendship. That would be just the mere suggestion. Mere suggestion of it would be like these are not my people this. This is not my person here because it's amazing to me that people are willing to stand outside and mass watching other people eat so that they can eat eggs and bacon which are two things can easily be made at home. What about going out to breakfast using a different name at a place where there is no lines or do you just not like to have the morning or afternoon meal at a restaurant. Breakfast is always eat at home like the idea of going out to breakfast with people is just not appealing to me because breakfast for me is like seven in the morning. Ooh I mean like I get up I get up and I have coffee. I E. The idea of eating breakfast at ten am eleven am is just a nonstarter for me. But what Rachel. I often do on weekends is. I don't know if anybody listening to this. Podcast knows this but there are eight hun- of restaurants in Seattle that are virtually empty at eleven thirty or noon that serve foods other than breakfast and Brunch. So we'll just go and find the place or like Vietnamese place or like mom. Noon is one of my favorite places would. It's it's always. They're always there's always people in there but it's not packed with a brunch crowd so I would much rather go and get an early lunch. That is some kind of ethnic or non breakfast e food at a time. That's around lunch because as an old person eat lunch your Get to bed by say exact. Oh Yeah Oh yeah in bed by nine. Yeah I think it is getting older though because in my twenty s when I partied a ton that was what you did because then you would get together the next morning with the same people you and out with that was like the captain hung over. And you would all kind of bond over that and you're just grossing you wouldn't take a shower and I would eat biscuits and and all these things that made me feel terrible but I didn't care because I would just go back to sleep now. I want to have a day and I don't want to feel bad all day and so I don't Wanna eat biscuits and gravy anymore at all because it just makes me so tired and I don't want to have a tired day. I don't drink that much anymore. So I don't need to have the recap and I think it's kind of in a way a little sad for me. I realized this weekend I was thinking. I'm like that was such a ritual that I loved that. I don't really do anymore. I don't think it's sad as much as you. Just shift your day. Accordingly based on what your social patterns are for Rachel and myself we would so rather have a people over for dinner party our house than to be like out at a bar till one.
