"And there is a sort of collective holding of the breath to see whether he's going to catch whoever it is on the line. And it's like that with alcaraz setting off for a ball that is absurdly out of reach. And then suddenly he's just there. And the crowd go in waves ever increasing waves of noise and pitch as they react to it. And you can then see he's feeding off that. He loves all that because the moment he reaches one and hits a winner and he gets that raw, he's got a way of celebrating. Appealing. And sometimes he put out his chin as if to say, did you see that? Yeah. And yet also completely self aware, he knows how good he is, but is somehow not obnoxious about that. And the single finger in the air. I can't believe I just did that. Can you believe it? Did you see that? Yeah. It is extraordinary. I mean, I thought I thought Casper Ruud did Casper rude tonight, really. And I know there were those spectacular moments that maybe you wouldn't expect, but he brings you a match that there was none other than Nadal sort of freezing in the headlights. He believed he could win and he went out and he did his methodical best with some sprinkling of spectacular in there as well. He did, and I don't want to be too hard on caspar, 'cause there's plenty of plays that wouldn't have made it even close to a match tonight. But we've just, I watched that set tiebreak live in the stadium and we've just watched it again on TV. And that was very un caspar rude. You know, as you said, he brings it, that's what he does. He doesn't give much away. And he gave, he gave that tie break away. Look, had he been more solid and cross might still have won with the spectacular, but making produce the spectacular at least make him go for it. I mean, we're talking, I think there were three shanks. I found it quite similar to jabour in the tiebreak last night. She sort of stiffened up at the end of it and that's what separates the player that wins these title and the one that doesn't. A lot of the time. And look at it, she went to got three of these things. Our crazies off and running and those two of both got runner up. Results, both very creditable and both, you know, they might get over the line. I think chabert will get over the line. I think rude might sort of squeeze one in somewhere if he keeps getting himself in a position, but squeeze one in. Well, do you know what I mean? Yeah, I mean, frankly, I think if I stay in among all the aircraft stays fit everyone's just hoping to squeeze one in, frankly. Yeah, Greg russki on our Prime Video coverage who has played and lost a U.S. open final. Thinks that Casper Ruud ought to and will be having sleepless nights. About that third set and the third set about the set point and about the tiebreak. Really? And maybe that's necessary to make him better and hungrier and rude has been characterized by always sort of when everybody else sort of pats him on the back and congratulates him for raising the bar a bit more. He goes, I'm not done yet. I'm going to raise the bar a bit further. Cameron nori like so maybe that a good thing for him, but I think it's too simplistic to just go, oh, well, alcaraz is better than everybody rude did well to make it a match today. I think that's true, but I also think there's room for route to have a few regrets in there. Yeah, I agree. I think he played well. He did. He was a lot more comfortable than the Roland Garros final where Nadal's idol and I think there was an element of happy to be there. Tonight, he believed he played well. He just didn't execute in the key moment, which was the tie break. And he does have a weakness on the back end that no matter how much he seems to condition it to strengthen it, it can let him down. It can, and it does, I think he's going to keep getting better, rude. I don't know how good the back cam will get. I mean, I always remember Federer saying that he always thanked the tour, didn't he? For playing to his backhand because it made it better. And that might happen with rude a bit. I also think he'll probably might improve his serve a bit more. And I just back him to incrementally get better. As he's done throughout his career and this is the best tennis he's ever played on a hardcore, it was a tougher run to the final, I would say than what he had in Paris as well. It's a great, great week. And I don't know. I don't feel like rude really lost this match. Just think it was just that tiebreak was a moment he will regret. We're going to have to turn the TV off because we've now reached the stage of the replay on ESPN where they're showing the alcaraz hogs. And I can't handle the Juan Carlos Ferrero hug again. And I've got a bit of a wobbly lip. And he's just hugged his brother and he's just sort of pulling at the back of his brother's hair in just joy and emotion. He described him as a second father. In the interview that he gave to us on prime and just said, I wouldn't have any of this without one caller so I wrote who incidentally became world number one himself, didn't he in the U.S. open final 19 years ago, but despite losing. Despite losing it, exactly. If you've never seen one car for a play, he was a really good player and he was like a sort of version one of what alcaraz is. He had the incredible fast arm and he was really quick around the court and to think that our crisis this much better than him, I mean, if you went back 20 years and had that conversation, a man, look, you know, maybe in 20 years time, our craz will be coaching somebody that's just taking it to another level. Who knows? But that relationship is, how long have they been together, basically since the start of his pro career? Just 20 18, I think. One call is very sore mats tweet. Yeah. I'll take a look. Buys varro. I mean, they do seem very different characters to be coaching. Let's be honest. But the bond between our crews and it just seems to work. I mean, he's done a really good job with him, hasn't he? If they have a split up, I won't take it well. I mean, apart from the fact that obviously he's an immense talent and he's got to try to make him a better tennis player.

"This Bloomberg sports update, let's start with baseball, not a winning night for the Yankees or the mets on Saturday Max Scherzer starting for the mets in their game at city field against the nationals. He went 5 innings, but to exited the game at that point with left side fatigue. And eventually it all caved in on the mets as the nationals cash in with 5 runs in the top of the 9th inning and they win going away 7 to one. So that is not a good finish for the mets. They'll continue the series at Citi Field on Sunday, even worse news for the Yankees. They lose in Tampa to the raise and the only hit that mattered was Aaron judge with a 9th inning solo home run. That's his 52nd home run of the year, but it was a two to one Tampa win as Corey Kluber shut down the Yankees with 7 shutout innings and so a nice win for the race. The Yankees have now seen their lead in the American League east shrink from 15 and a half games down to four. They've lost 6 of their last 7 and so the Yankees continue to struggle and they also make the move on Andrew benintendi and place him on the ten day injured list. He's got right wrist inflammation that happened in Friday's game in Tampa. Let's move on to tennis, the U.S. open continues with Rafael medal and iges via tech advancing with straight set wins on Saturday. Carlos alcaraz and Cameron nori also advanced as well. College football kicked off everywhere all over the country on Saturday, the biggest games with a number two Ohio State beating number 5 Notre-Dame 21 to ten and number three Georgia routing 11th ranked Oregon 49 to three. That's your Bloomberg sports update. I'm Dan gutowski. This

"And talking to which Jessica pegula a straight sets winner today over at Alexandra sasnovich, I must admit I thought that that could be a tricky match because Sasha witch likes to play a big name doesn't she? But the good lord just delivers, doesn't she? She doesn't she doesn't slip on banana skins. She also doesn't get massive wins yet. But you know, she's a bit of a Cameron nori. Yeah, it was quite an interesting match because sassov has these real peaks and troughs and pagal just doesn't and there were a lot of breaks of serve, but for Google it just wasn't flustered at all and ends up doing what she does winning in straight sets. Yeah, she's just reliable, isn't she? I do feel like she's probably going to fulfill her seeding. Do we know her big match that's going to be in the quarter? Because she's always in the Sri Lanka course. She is. That's what the draw gods ordained for her at Martha's her fate. Ash Barty dominates YouTube retires. Now we give you English film. Lovely. Well, another big match today won impressively from behind was by Belinda bencic. 13th seed lost the first of 6 three to saronic castella, then second set 7 5. I mean, that castella doesn't give it away. She said for it Costa didn't watch the match, but was you know a match is good when you're entertained by live schools. And I was very entertained by the live schools on that one. She plays the buzka ver a next. I'm not sure if that much is I can assure you it has finished because I was watching it point by point because I've picked bush cover to beat Pliskova in the newsletter predictions for four in a row. And she lost 6 three 6 two. So that's my run over and please give it is therefore the opponent of some calmer for bringing up your three in a row last night. Look, this match probably won't mean an awful lot in the context of the tournaments, but I really feel we need to tip the hat to Lauren Davis who's beaten a Catherine at Alexandria. Love 6 6 four 7 6 ten 6 ten 5 in the match time frame. She can be a wild ride at guan slam's country Lauren Davis. I have a feeling there are countless examples, but the one that immediately springs to mind is having match points against Simona Halep at the Australian open the year that palette breached the final, lost towards naki and ended up on a drip in hospital overnight. She's someone give me a word other than diminutive. She's quite short. Yeah, she's quite sure. She's quite short. She's plucky. She's all of the cliches that you associate with a smaller statute tennis player. She's lived up to them today. So well done, Lauren Davis. There has been a pretty big upset. I suppose, look, in seedings terms, it's a bit like conservate losing last night. Really, pala but also just at the moment doesn't feel like the four seed. The way her form is, and she's out in the second round, beaten by a very good player in Petra martic, somebody who's done significant things in the game. But it's not one that many matches of late 6 7 martic lost the first set, but then 6 one 6 two ran away with it. I didn't get to watch that match. It was played over on court 17, nice caught that, but that's a pretty jarring scoreline matter for you. You kept you around that? Yeah, I went out for the third set, hoping that it was going to be really exciting. And I also just quite meekly went down a double break and did did fight a little bit in the closing stages, had some break back points, but couldn't convert them, she searching. She really is and watching her up close, the media seats there are literally in the front row and you can see the anguish on her face, you know, real pain, expression that she's playing with. She was, she was struggling with the martic game. That variety Matic keeps the ball so low and bellotto was just struggling to get the top spin to get it back over the net. She's had a hard time recently, but also I think on and off court. It became to my attention recently that in the Spanish press, she's been really taking a bit of heat because she made a bit of a blunder in one of these fun videos that I think was during the grass court season, but it came out saying that she was asked what languages she speaks. And she said, well, Catalan isn't a language. And you know, it wasn't, it wasn't that deep, but I've been watching too much love Ireland as well. But it's sort of got picked up on and it's sort of the equivalent I suppose of Andy Murray saying. Anyone that England. And I think that's been quite tough. It was all over Spanish speaking social media and I'm not saying that's the reason she lost the Petra Marta. But it all answers. It all adds up and it's just, it's just been a tough, tough run for her. I mean, if anybody doesn't remember that Andy Murray won from it's 16 years ago now and these days he's everybody in the UK I think pretty much everybody now loves him and appreciates him but back then. And if they don't, they're wrong. Yeah and back then England playing a World Cup match and he's bantering away with Tim henman and Tim said to him I think who do you want to win the England match? And he said anyone but England and it was a joke at Tim henman's expense, et cetera and there were going back and forth. That got reported and picked up and sent around the world and suddenly all the English people that were following him were seen that he's anti English.

"It wouldn't be Murray if he didn't. Now, I think that goes too far sometimes, but some players are ruthless and Djokovic in his early career. One of the things I noticed most about him when he was still coming up was that he would beat people 6 two 6 two all the time. He would just dismantle people. Wouldn't just beat them with 6 fire, 6 four, 7, 5 type score, and he would just destroy people. Because he's so efficient and he's got these laser light ground strokes and all the rest of it, but I do think in the last couple of years, he probably has got used to winning a certain way. And it really is true that he's done it a lot in the slams. It was a feature of his run to the one match short of the calendar Grand Slam last year. I think he, I think he dropped the opening set ten times in slams last year and one 9 of them and the only one he didn't win was that final against Medvedev. And yeah, he's done it. He's done it this tournament. Yeah, it really is a feature of his. I mean, I did think maybe there were other factors, the fact that they had a not before start time made it a bit of a funny feel to it, but obviously that would affect both players and also what happened yesterday, Nadal pulling out, to me, that changed the whole feel of today. It made today feel a bit weird. And Nadal is so tied to Djokovic. You know, everyone was sort of thinking that they were going to be meeting in the final and perhaps jokic was a little bit as well and maybe that was just a little bit in his mind and gave it a bit of a strange feel. I don't know. I'm really speculating, but I was just trying to grasp but reasons why the match felt a bit strange. And obviously conversely for Djokovic's opponent, they've got the opposite effect. They can come out of the blocks, play brilliant set. You know, take the first set against Djokovic as just as paranoid did today. And yet in the back of their mind, they know that doesn't really impact their chances of winning the match. It's sort of, it's not quite meaningless. It must make them wonder though, because I daresay, when Yannick sinner went two sets up, he doesn't know whether Djokovic against him is going to be the Djokovic that he's seen against everybody else from that position. You know, you might convince yourself that I reckon that wouldn't happen to me. If I was to set up because I was thinking this about norrie, I thought if norrie somehow managed to go two sets up, I don't see him fading physically. You'd have to outplay him. So I was kind of hopeful for him on that on that level. But once he was a setup and it wasn't about physicality this match, it was about Djokovic, his ability to change things. But yeah, I do think that in both of those cases I can see that I'm sure that comes into play. It's not it wasn't my favorite tennis match up this. It wasn't my kind of tennis match just because they're both so similar, I think partly because although sort of four sets, a little bit of jeopardy with Djokovic losing the first broadly from the outside, it looks like a competitive match, but none of the individual sets. Fell to that competitive when you were in them. I didn't think David you commentated sets for two and four. Am I being unfair to them? No, I don't think so. I enjoyed commentating on set four because although Cameron nori went down a break early on. There was this great kind of small narrative of him trying to keep close and he was trying to hold onto his serve to prevent the double break and he did so in a game that he saved four break points and he was doing it with the most daring tennis for Cameron nori. I mean he's an attritional player. That's really what he is. He's a consistent ball striker he's a ball machine and a brilliant one, but he was having to be daring and go down the lines, really go after his shots in order to just keep Djokovic off him. And somehow he managed to save those four break points when he was about three two down with a break also four two down with a break and narrow the score to just a single game and then you've got that feeling of right. Now let's see if Djokovic in some way Titans as he's trying to serve this out. Let's see if norrie can stay inspired. Maybe the crowd come into it and they did. I mean, they were going after, I think there were probably a few people in that crowd going after Djokovic and he was responding to them. And that made it really fun to commentate on, but at no point did you really feel like it was actually going to turn around once Djokovic had got in control? Let's remember though that the one and only previous meeting between these two at the tour finals last year in Turin, where Kavanaugh had come in as an alternate was, I mean, one side it doesn't even cover it. Hannah described it as a bloodbath. And it was. Nori was embarrassed, I think. But I think it was a real learning process for what that level is like. If one of those guys plays well, oh my word. And even his dad nori's dad, David norrie was doing the rounds on TV and on the radio today, seems like an absolutely lovely chap, but got the impression he didn't think too highly of cam's chances before the match today. How did he describe the afternoon that he was anticipating? He said he thinks it's going to be a tough few hours. You know, it was their hype piece, you know. They were doing an hour's build up on the BBC. He seemed like a really lovely guy and he said he thinks he would rather be behind the sofa watching it than. Parents aren't there. They're the ones that have pictures of their children's faces on their emblazoned on their t-shirts. And well, actually, I wasn't talking about Djokovic's parents there, but they have done that in the past 7. I'm thinking of your X Factor contestants where there's a gag of 15 people, you know, you've got your neighbor's dog walker with a your face on there. Chest. And then there's the David Norris of this world. And I know that Rosalind and David Whittaker are nodding at their devices right now going, we are the David Norris of this world. Yes. Yeah, indeed. And I wonder whether he just literally didn't think his son had much of a chance or whether he was just talking about how anxious he was going to be for those few hours. I think it was quite a lot of the latter for sure. It's funny though. But it did sort of come across as not if I took it from the games. We had a Nick curios press conference today, didn't we? Because obviously there was no prospect of being able to speak to him here his thoughts after the semifinal because there wasn't a semifinal, so

"Which is probably a good thing. For your first Grand Slam quarter final week. He became inspired, and actually I felt like Gotham rose to it, and they went toe to toe for a while at the end there. And it just brought that memories of that time we sort of discovered him for the first time in that clay court match in the Davis Cup in Spain. When he's taking on these proper clay quarters in against the crowd. Okay, this one he had the crowd, but if you remember back because he played this college tennis, he was always saying this is what I like. This is what I'm into. You could just see it still matter of fact, but just getting inspired. And I think we always talk about his engine, don't mean his improbably enormous lungs. And I know that they alone can't when you a tennis match. But when you're headed into a 5th set in that sort of situation, it must help the other aspects of your game to know you don't need to worry about the physical side of things. It must help keep you loose and relaxed and focused because you're not stressed, it's not even occurring to you whether that's going to be effective. It's not occurring to us watching. Whether cam norrie will be able to last physically or whether he'll even begin to fade because there is no difference in him in the 5th set. To win the first set, both of them had ludicrously perfect hair. In that process. They did. Yeah, Catherine was really saying, how did I do this? How do they keep the hair like that? I'm sweating, just walking from the bus. Honestly. Honestly, I can't wear my hair down because the ten minute walk from the bus stop to the tennis. It's not even hilly. I've got a sweaty scalp by the end of it. They had perfect hair three hours in. I want to know what's happening. We'll go to the press conference. Yeah. First question. Hashtag journalism, just like I was doing on port 14 watching the legends invitational mixed doubles. We've come so far with Cameron. I mean, it really wasn't that long ago, Catherine, that you were watching him lose in round one of the French against bonsa tree. And the player he is now is almost unrecognizable in terms of the feeling he gives you on the court. And yet it does feel like the sort of nuts and bolts of his game obviously have improved, but they've also just remained the same. I mean, I'm in awe of the results Cameron nori is had in this last couple of years. The recent stat that I always think of with cam norrie is that he's won every tournament at which he's been the number one seed. Is he really? Yeah. And that tells you so much about him and it tells you something that is pretty much the opposite to what I thought of him. Three or four years ago when he was losing matches like that and first round at the French Open. And even the start of this year, I remember we talked about it a lot. We were a bit worried about him in terms of his new status as a player on the cusp of the top ten. How is he going to react to that? He likes being the underdog. And yet I think there were some little wobbles at the start of the early 8 feet car first round. None of them were bad losses. They just sort of made you ponder and think, okay, are we going to have a difficult second year here? And absolutely none of that. And that point about him winning when he's been the top seed matches he's supposed to win. That's that I think has probably helped him in this tournament because his draw did open up, you know, let's be up front and honest about that, but that comes with its own pressure in itself. And he's handled it. He's beaten quality opponents like Tommy Paul and David Goffin. And yeah, there's a big difference between being a Grand Slam semifinalist on the ground quarterfinalist. Obviously it's amazing to get to the quarterfinal, but there's way more Grand Slam quarterfinalist than there are semifinalists. He's in a last four of Wimbledon. Cameron norrie, that if he'd said that, just two or three years ago, I thought, how? How is that possible? Especially when he lost his time with rinku of first round of queens that year. Yeah. But it's amazing. Just on you saying, we've come so far with camera nori. Yes. And yet I still don't feel like we've come far enough because we still never put him in the mix. I'm not saying he's in the mix to win it, but we never hang on. There is only one mix and it is to win it. But we never put do we ever put him in the quarterfinals of this thing? Did anybody that you know? I didn't. And we also didn't put any money how many times have we said that's the last time I underestimate cannabis when he wins in the world. I know. I'm looking at myself with this. This is my favorite. What I've written is in, well, I've written an abbreviated version of what I was what I'm about to say because I was short of time and I was writing it. But look, it is unlikely that this run will continue simply because who he plays next, Novak Djokovic. I mean, he would be heavy favorite, I think, going into pretty much every match up besides Rafael Nadal. Right now, quite frankly. So the run is likely to end there, but this is arguably his least favorite slam in terms of surface. He's going to be headed next in a few short weeks time into his favorite slam by far, you know, he made himself as a tennis player on U.S. hard courts. He is hardened on them if you'll excuse the unintended pun. Maybe we should be thinking about him for the U.S. open mix. Yeah. Yeah. The only reason I wouldn't now is because of Djokovic and Nadal. Now obviously Djokovic might not get in the way things are going. I look Nadal and he is so similar and I still am Nadal will always make me think he's going to beat him. But the rest of them the submix you might call it the little mix sits a pass ruble. Exactly. Why should we be putting him in? I think you put Medvedev ahead of him. I think Medvedev's a contender along with the big two. He's in the mix. Yeah. But I do think within sits a pass and Rublev. You've now got to stick a camera nori. You have. Yeah, and look, he's the heavy underdog against Novak Djokovic, but he'll make him work for it. He will keep him honest you'll make him work for it. 100% Cameron Ori, and who knows anything can happen..

"Didn't see these incredible highs that were so used to from our careers. There was maybe one where he covered the length of the core in a split second as he does and hit a winner up the line. But otherwise, he saved it for just a tiny little things like occasionally just latching on to two or three returns in a row and that was enough to get the break in the first set. And then the second set went to a tie break and he has that thing out cares where you expect him to play better, the bigger the moment. Which is something that so many great players have all great players have, I think. And he did it in the type, but he won it 7 love. You know, I've been a really close set and suddenly he just went bang bang bang 7 love tiebreak is his two sets of love lead. And real 7, 7 points in a row. Yeah, so it was really interesting to watch him. Because I'm not expecting him to win this tournament in a way that, you know, I wasn't expecting him to win the French Open, but he was a real genuine title contender there, and he had his, he had his struggles against Ramos vinyl, so he ended up losing to zverev. There was, you know, there was, again, it was seeing him in a different scenario. I was seeing him as a Grand Slam contender for the first time. Here it's seeing him figure out grass, see what he's capable of, and I just think he's going to get better and better. The more he plays on. He's one of two players in this drawer who can beat Novak Djokovic. The other one beaten it down. What about Tim van reiter? He was your he was your, what was the fortune cookie again? Follow the path of your heart. Yeah. What if the part of his heart leads to beating Novak Djokovic David? Well, I'm sure it does. He's on it. This forehand would have down the line. Let's see what's in future for fortune cookies. His serve is also massive today, alcohol. I mean, again, it's about the floor, not the ceiling. Okay, we knew he could serve 130 mph. But he's always serving over a 120 mph. It's very rare that a first serve drops below one 20. It's just consistently big, you know, it's impressive. Okay, let's wrap up the men's draw well, while we seem to have arrived there. David gave Ryan peniston the kiss of death today. Johnson. I've had one prediction that's worked out on day one. Everything else has gone wrong. Yeah, Paul Ryan penniston, that was a tough one today. He got told I'd backed him and you have to. Yeah. Cam nori avoided the same fate. He had to go 5 sets against muna on court number one, what was Hannah's brilliant Cameron nori pun? No more. Keep cam and norian, yes. Very good. That's our collective analysis of this match. Hugo and Bert turned up to play the number three seed without any tennis rackets. Can we talk about that for a moment, please? How does that happen? He got to the stage of opening his bag. Before discovering there were no rackets. I really like you going back. He incidentally beat the number three seed Casper Ruud today in a full set. But we're going to lean on the racket because he deserves it. Because if you show up to a tennis match without racket, sorry. Isn't it? It's more than that. It's like, if you show the match is called and you don't show up. Sorry, you didn't show up. That's the default. You should have got a penalty for it. Sorry, there's no tennis podcast tonight. We didn't bring our microphones. Absolutely. You don't show up able to play. I find it ludicrous. I can see. Just like the whole your match is called, and you know. Does it all the time? I still haven't got over Mikhail in there, turning up about 12 minutes late for his match. Sorry, the match starts now. You weren't there. Almost always. Sorry you go. Sort yourself out for next round. I mean, that is one of the talking points of the day, actually. That section of the draw, we're guaranteed a first time Grand Slam semifinalist already. Who have we got? We've got ugo and bear, David Goffin, Francis tiafoe, Alexander bublik. Great today, TFO. Oh, good. I've got him going far. Cameron norrie, Steve Johnson, Tommy Paul, Yuri Wesley. A lot of Americans there. One of those 8 will reach the semifinals. TFO plays bublik next and that is going to be a fun time. Yeah. I like it. Tommy Paul, playing very well. Tommy Paul can play. Heroes, Tim henman, and he really means that he's spent hours watching to amendment on YouTube. And wanted to learn the volume. Yeah. But it's coach Brad Stein. Yeah, usually when you hear that start about guaranteed new semifinalists or quarterfinalist or finest or whatever you think, does that mean really sort of dodgy dodgy section of the draw. But a lot of these names quite excite me. Actually. I really like watching Tommy Paul and Francis tiafoe and Alexander bublik on grass and a few others in there as well. I think it's just like. Diversity. Among those names. And different stages of careers as well. And Johnson Goffin. Opportunity for cam norrie. This is the this is the one. He's been waiting for. He had his work cut out. He did..

Another PGA Tour member has defected to the Liv golf invitational series as 23 year old Matthew wolf will play in this week's live tournament in Oregon. Wolf turned pro back in 2019 and immediately won the 3M open while also finishing fourth in the 2020 PGA Championship in second at the 2020 U.S. open. Hang seng index futures just started to trade. They're down about a half of 1%. We had massive gains yesterday the tech index is up 4.7% the hanx index itself was up 2.4%, so it might be natural to see a little give back today. We saw some give back on Wall Street, the rebound in global equity stalled out there. The losses weren't great, though the S&P 500 was down about three tenths of a percent. Some of it was driven by higher oil prices and higher yields because those had been going the other direction during the furious equity rallies last week. Anyway, WTI is still higher this morning in Asia, but yields have stabilized. They're not really doing all that much to yield on a ten year. Is that 3.19% to two year at three O 9. Nike shares down in after hours 2.9%, Nike offered a downbeat full year forecast for gross margins, so costs going up and it was also cautious on China. After the close as well, we had the banks announce what they're doing with the extra cash. After passing the stress test last week, Morgan Stanley traded up 3.2% Goldman was up 1%. At Bloomberg dot com, the Bloomberg business app. And at Bloomberg quick tape. This is a Bloomberg business flash. So we had a little consolidation on Wall Street earlier in the end the NASDAQ was down 7 tenths of a percent. The S&P 500 gave back three tenths of a percent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average off two tenths of a percent. We're not seeing a lot of action in equity futures contracts this morning Hanks and index futures are down little down about 8 tenths of a percent. China futures only down a quarter of 1%. Right now, if you look at Australia and futures flat, nikkei futures at 26,000 745 and that compares to a close of 26 8 71, so a little bit of downward pressure today, but the gains were so big last week that if you're only giving back just a tad, it may still be music to the ears of bulls, we'll have to wait and see right now we've got, we've still got a lot of momentum in Chinese shares and in Hong Kong with tech shares, the tech index, up 4.7% yesterday, Alibaba rallied 3.7% and JD.com was up 6 and a quarter percent and although it wasn't too much action in the NASDAQ golden dragon index overnight, you'd have some individual shares of prominently companies like Baidu and JD.com. Right now the dollar is a little bit weaker and no trading in treasury at the moment, the last deal on the ten year 3.19%. And that's a check of markets. Headline news with Ed Baxter in San Francisco. All right, Brian, thank you NATO is set to label China's systemic challenge in a strategic plan. G 7 wraps up statements to codify the indefinite time frame for help for Ukraine. U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan says high power defense systems are just about on their way to Ukraine. NATO's released a plan to boost the size of its high readiness force to 300,000. That effectively is a 7 fold increase. This is Russian missiles hit a shopping center at least ten are dead, two missiles hit Kyiv as well. Whether president Xi Jinping will attend in person the handover anniversary weekend this weekend is up still up in the air. Reports are saying that he will be there, but very well will go back to Shenzhen to sleep. January 6th committee is scheduled a new hearing for tomorrow to air some new video of Donald Trump and his family and the time frame leading up to the capital insurrection and the U.S. U.S. Supreme Court has backed a high school football coach who lost his job for conduct postgame conducting postgame prayers on the field and other move relaxing the separation of church and state. In San Francisco, I met Baxter this is Bloomberg, Rashad. Okay, getting back to guest Lorraine time, director of equity research at Morningstar getting her market taken. Lorraine, thanks for sticking around to give us a sense of, as we move into the second half, you know, will it be better for Asia? And what are you looking at in a more specific company, which companies you look at in particular? Yeah, I think first and foremost, because we do expect the worst of the China lockdowns to have been seen the second quarter, but obviously the issues is that it's still a bit choppy coming out of that over the next few months, but having said that, I think that's really a little bit of a bounce and that's being reflected currently in some recovery in the China issues. So to be to be selective, we're more keen on, as I mentioned, companies with economic modes. So we do have a few wide note rated companies that we particularly like because they're trading around half of their fair values submitted at the moment. So that includes names like TSMC, yum, China, and Tencent to name the street that are around half of their values set them off survey estimates for the next moment. So when you step back from China and look at the region more broadly, we're waiting for the retail sales figures for South Korea today. How do you view the region? Is everything that is developing on a positive note in China is that kind of having permutations outside of the country and to other regions? I think to some extent what we expect to see, let's say, if you've got a U.S. slowdown in 2023 in terms of growth, that's starting to happen. But you've got hopefully China coming up about its lockdowns and 2023, which we hope will act as a buffer to some of the other Asian countries activity levels. As you know, a lot of the growth is being was previously propelled by China demand. Obviously, with the rest of the world swing down, you're not probably not going to see China grow at such a strong pace. But it will be better than this year, let's say. So I think that would be a bit of a buffer. We just have interest rates coming up and some of the countries. But overall, I think that we're looking at general still sort of largely sort of activity levels stabilizing, probably not at this pace that we saw the past year with the coming out of lockdowns. But generally coming down to a more normalized activity level. All right, so it gives some names you like, possibly if you're comfortable doing that. It gives a sense of how you see how you look at this market as a stock picker. And you know how important is credit quality to you? Yeah. So I think the defensive issues have definitely up formed the past 6 months. We still think there's room in portfolios for them. So we're talking about dividend yielding companies. The two that we like there are companies like cheung Kong infrastructure holdings, TKI holdings, ST engineering in Singapore. A very stable capital flows, I mean, dividend flows and we expect STE to also benefit from a recovery and air travel, given that they do a lot of maintenance work for airlines. The other go ahead, I'm sorry to interrupt, continue. Yeah. But in terms of where we're seeing the biggest discount is in the sectors that I mentioned that were over so basically consumer discussion like the ecommerce name set happened rebounding recently. Tencent's obviously got some overhang with some share sales ongoing, but we think weakness there is an opportunity to pick up. And again, we still like to use them to seek for its ability to what we think could support its margins going forward as well. So very quickly in about 30 seconds, when you mentioned margins there and I'm wondering, given the fact that we may continue to see a little bit of margin pressure at least in the near term, are there areas of the market that you are avoiding at all cost? Okay, so obviously where we see where there's less value, for example, so we've got companies that maybe a staple space that will gradually be able to pass that on, but they're still going to be a little bit of pressure. There's we think that some of the consumer consumer electronics related areas are going to face both top line and potentially margin pressure as well as global

"It doesn't mean much. But the men get a nice honor Wimbledon for divinity champ. Do tournaments O defending champs, something like should Cameron nori have been, was he right to be aggrieved by his assignment? I think I kind of think, yes, I think you put him on stadium for the first match, and then you can kind of put him on like three or something. But well, he was put on three to play the rematch of last year's final. Yeah. Was on three. Yeah. Now owing is a big word, but it just doesn't cost the tournament that much to just put him in the first round or if he has a buy in a second round on stadium court because at least on two, like two would be like, okay. 5, 5 is the statement. 5 is saying what they were like, I don't know, like 12 matches on the men's that we think are more valuable to us than yours. Depending on enjoy your mural. Yeah. I mean, maybe they forgot that he won. I don't know. Yeah. I didn't forget. I've become quite a fan of Cameron nori after watching him from up close and water than this year. I really paid attention because I was a bit critical before, and I turned around completely. He's really impressive, especially if you really get to watch him from what impressed you. His footwork mainly. So maybe you'll really need to see him on a small court where you can really see him from gloves to get to appreciate him. And in the big stadium, we just can't see it. Just can't see what makes him so good. There you go. That's a very positive spit on it. I just want to give people that up close nor experience, yeah. A couple of people, another quarterfinalist, through this tournament, Nick kyrgios was a wildcard, had a great run to the quarterfinals, beating his sort of jokey nemesis of clay court discussions, Casper Ruud, and there's actually really any beef between them to speak of meaningfully, but it was clearly mentioned Nick was fired up for. Nick was very excited to get to beat Casper Ruud to did four and four. He made the quarterfinals, played really well against Rafael Nadal in that match. And came close to winning in, I think, fair to say, and certainly had his chances. Really melted down in the first set tiebreak. She lost 7 O kind of tank the 6 point in the 7th point was a point penalty for an audible obscenity that he received and yeah, and then match was good, and then obviously what happened at the end, he loses he does the handshake with Dahl and he spikes his racket into the court and the racket goes bounding up all the way into the back wall of the court right over the head or right would have been at the head of a ball kid who had a sort of scurry out of the way last second to avoid getting hit by this racket. It's a pretty shocking piece of video that the person who filmed it wasn't shot on TV. The person who filmed and got the angle you see the whole trajectory of the thing is quite striking. Nick was not apologetic for this impress whatsoever. It was a weird scenario where he got asked, he got asked about it in the very first question of the press conference. Which I think was probably not the way to play this. And his reaction, he was very, very appalled by this line of questioning and felt offended by it. And aggrieved and was mocking and hostile towards the reporter for asking it. But then after, you know, within an hour or two afterwards, he put out this social media apology and said he found the kid and posted screenshots of the conversation on Instagram with the kid and then if the ball kid and then the next day he posted a video of him giving a racket to the kid. He just tried to give him a racket before. It was just a little higher velocity, honestly. And he posted this video on social media again and to show it. It was very short interaction and he was talking about how he made the kids today. It was closely never happened to this kid. I don't know. I mean, I think this fits into the continuum of tennis players. Not having a lot of regard for other people's safety. He's broad strokes and sort of making reckless choices. And during these pandemic years, of various kinds, Nick was quick to point out and I completely agree. This was not anywhere near the sort of incident that zverev and Acapulco was. I don't think we've talked about this here at Acapulco actually since I don't have done a show since then. But people obviously know by now out centers where violently slashing with his racket at the chair empire hitting the sides of the chair after a loss and he got defaulted from the singles in that tournament as a result and after an investigation, they decided not to suspend him, but they did find him guilty of a major offense or something, so he's on probation now. This was not like that. That's not how the same sort of malice, but it did have remarkable recklessness. And also curios did, again, accidentally hit a kid with a ball, pretty hard. During a doubles match at the Australian open, where he spiked a ball and went to the crowd and hit somebody for a dead ball that he just sort of slammed for no real reason to stand. Off the balance, it bounced. But anyway, yeah, I don't know, I don't know what the takeaways are from this, but it was just sort of like, oh, here we go again with the mental tennis. The one thing I will say was zverev is that by not suspended, but not actually actively suspending him for a couple tournaments, making him miss part of the tour..

"So the ATP finals are over, Catherine Whitaker spent most of the day. Asleep. But she's here. Awakened just the Nick of time. Hello, Catherine. Just about scrambled myself into the land of the living in time for the podcast. You're welcome. Well, it's obviously to see you. How's your week been? Tiring, tiring, but good. Successful. Good. Yep. Yeah. Well, we've enjoyed watching you, Matt and I, you know, we watched on the TV and we say, oh, we know her. And yeah, no, it's been, it's been an interesting week of tennis that we can bring you up to date with obviously last time we were with you with Friday night. We'd just seen all the group stage matches apart from Novak Djokovic against Cameron nori, which in all honesty didn't mean an awful lot and as expected Djokovic sailed his way through that. And so that left us with semifinals and final to catch up on. And good to also have Catherine on for the first time because she's been a swanning around on TV for the last week and not enough time for us. So, you know, it's nice to see her again. Yeah. Blame the extra hour gap between sessions, David and the hour later. Much start time in Turin. Do I sense Catherine that of all the things that you experienced of Turin's staging that maybe that's the one that has got to go? The session timings. Yes. Yeah, I mean, spoiler alert, I wasn't out in Turing. Our studios in hounslow, we had done about Croft out there for us and we were similar. Crossing out there frequently, but I wasn't out there. So the time difference meant that night session much in the night session. Singles match for us in the UK was starting at 8 p.m., but locally they were starting at 9 p.m. and I know that cultures are different in I'm not quite sure what it's like in Italy. I know in Spain, you know, everything's different people go out for dinner far far later than they do here. But I just think that's too late. I think it's too late. It's too late the year after new session starts too early, and the evening session starts too late. And there's a big old gap in the middle. Yep. And well. And now it's an app. So it's always a time. That's perfectly perfectly sort of packaged. It's you can't nap when you've got two mic packs and an ear pack attached to your waist. And you can't lie down because there's all sorts of stuff going on in your hair. Anyway, get the violins out for all my first world problems. There was a lot of could have been nap time that wasn't. Although I have to say if Catherine can't nap through that, then nobody can. Matt's not here today. He's in Madrid. We'll be catching up with him in a couple of days time when we are building up to the Davis Cup finals. He's out there for that. He's all right. He's successfully got himself over there and he's raring to go. So I can't wait to speak to math about what all that's like. Before we get on to talk about the actual ATP finals, we should bring you up to date with the latest as we know it at least, regarding punctual, because obviously it's a story we've been following all over the last week. And the very latest is that we've at least seen pictures of her. We've seen video footage of her at first of all a dinner and then at a tennis event, what we're told was in Beijing and then finally in a video called which was shown and pictured on the Olympics, the official Olympics website with punctual apparently having a conversation via video link with the IOC president Thomas Bach and in that 30 minute call as it was detailed. She said to have thanked him and the IOC and everybody who's inquiring about her well-being and informed them that she is safe. Well, at home in Beijing and requesting privacy at the end of the article, we are told that he invited her to dinner in the call and that she's accepted. In that article, there is no mention of any of the allegations that she made on her Weibo account, which started this entire situation and the concern over her well-being and the fact that all of her post and subsequently lots and lots of search references to her into tennis seemed to disappear from the Internet in China. And it seemed that they had been in the words of many of the China correspondents for the BBC that they had been scrubbed to use that terminology. This has not put the minds at rest of the WTA. Steve Simon, again, has been, or at least the spokesperson for the WTA is again set today that this is an insufficient information for us. We still want to be able to speak and for us to be absolutely assured that she is speaking without any influence over her. And that an investigation can take place into the allegations that she initially made. So they are still concerned. The AOC Catherine seemed to take a very different approach to this throughout. They've talked about quiet diplomacy being their way forward. I heard a lord co this morning talking on ready a four on the today program. And being pretty defensive of that position and kind of warning against the more combative adversarial, I suppose approach that the WTA have taken the ultimatum really that they've thrown down. But really this is not over the ad. I mean, it's great to see that she's at least seemingly if those are current pitchers and if they are reliable that she is okay physically. But that isn't enough, is it? No, no. No one near. I feel like I've learned more about the IOC and Thomas Bach in the last 24 hours than I have about punctual status. It is, as you say, these developments are. Reassuring of her physical state. But there's still no certainty in that because there is no absolute guarantees of the verified ability of the timing of these images, but assuming that it is reassuring of her physical state and nothing more and there is an awful lot more to this. That I admire and respect Steve Simon for it would be so easy now with the IOC and with Thomas Bart getting proof of life as it were and let's be honest, it would be very easy to go, okay, great. We've done we've pat ourselves on the back. We've done a good thing. We've done our bit. We can still salvage all our relationships and all our financial interests. And move on. And I think, you know, the easy bit is at the start saying, hey, this isn't right..

"Will. Thank you lovely gaurav and lovely kids of gaurav for that. Wonderful sunny intro Sunny in show. I think is exactly what we needed. Today it's been a somewhat grim weekend heh in not so sunny uk. Actually as i say that son is streaming in through my window but my goodness me. Saturday was a warning shot. Across the bows of the bleak bleak winter. That is to come. And i spent it watching tennis in san diego where it looks really lovely. No food no fehmi whatsoever. David it'll numb long for sunday to get a tournaments at this time of year for everybody to realize. Oh that's a good idea. that's all gather. Yeah he looks nice. Doesn't it really nice. I mean i know you know they not this tournament together in a master weeks. Didn't think it was a temporary temporary stand. didn't you know obviously if it did become permanent. Fixture on the on the calendar certain elements change. They're probably have bigger facilities and all of that but it seems like the bare bones if you need for for tennis event by that i mean players and sunshine crowd and crowd. It feels like they've they've got all these things. Yes donny velva do. I saw the managing director of the event and it just immediately had a an established tournament. Feel about him as though it's gotta community behind it already and i know about the staging of it. I just know that. When i turned it on it just made the heart seeing quite interesting this elongation of tennis in america. That's happening this year. Normally the us open is sort of the end of that swaying in them. Where into the asian season and here in the uk that means ten is happening in the morning rather than in the evening and night. It's just the different pace but yet the those tournaments in chicago and san diego pretty cool to see them. So well attended and well-supported. Yeah this big markets over there. Tennis at night suits me fall better than tennis in the morning. Say maybe this is just worn goods. Unintended consequence of a pandemic foot for me personally anyway and my and my sleep patterns I've been sunday Together a few years ago after doing it was a at in toronto covering that tournament and went on sunday. Go off to. Its with a with a friend that works to the atp metal look holiday are drove through. That was that was the tournament when the sorry david. The rio olympics started and i discovered that on the west coast of the united states. They don't get things live. Yes oh yes i remember. I remember you being quite this ball. Cruel in search of somewhere that was showing the opening ceremony live. And everybody's sort of confused looked at me and said oh it doesn't stop for three hours a night know all time. We're all missing it and it's like they're living in the past to the future or some sort of suspended times very very strange anyway other than that lovely place. Did you see dolphins. No no wells. I say that because spoiler casper route got his title in san diego and he was presented with a with a dolphin trophy big fan of animal themed trophies fees in general the sounds getting it would seem if the same there hit in san diego dolphin i did. I did go surfing in san diego. I need to discover the beachwear. Windsurfing had been a shark attack the week before but i do didn't discover until afterwards be merrily surfing say good. I had the biggest board in town to help me be goods Yeah slowly not very good. When i did my journalism. Course in nineteen ninety-seven. I went a few days early and ended up having to got surfing in a deserted See that was freezing cold. And i realize it's a bit harder than i thought. Fleming heart surfing that is that is the beauty and the horror of it. So should we start off by talking about sunday. Then saying i very definitely stood in direction. And i've not been to chicago s- affair or astana So let's let's start with what we know and and move it on from there. Casper rude was the champion in san diego. He beat cameron nori six love. Six two in the final. That i stayed up to watch will at least the early stages of last night i fell asleep. Probably a few games in the games. That i'd seen cam nori looked nervous. He was definitely tight and misfiring. But i just expected him to work his way back into the match. You know he'd lost the opening set. She under incredible win that one. We'll talk about it in a moment. Bad law sleeping in that one the day before and i just thought oh no big deal for cameron nori being the competitive that he is to to have a slow start but it turned out to be quite a big deal because casper read just did not give him a chance to get into that much love to in a final against someone is hardened is cam norian and as i say just the competitor that he is. I thought that was pretty incredible at she from casper read. I was not expecting to to wake up. Check the final school. And see that david um me either and i quite like to see them play again in indian wells in about the third round or something to see whether the final elements of that was partially responsible for ferrari sort of failing to give his best. There was a stutthof fight through the. This is a guy who'd been getting seventy percent of his first serves in an having more success on that first than anybody all week and yet here he was halfway through the match need one fourteen percent of his first-serve points in the first set. I mean he just couldn't get it going at all and and i was trying to work out. Is this a styles issue. That he is having a guy do to him what he does to everybody else which is just be everywhere. Keep getting the ball back. Keep pushing but without misfiring never hitting unforced errors and eventually the opponent breaks down. And that's what rude was doing to him and he's just just way better at it. But i think that was joined by just a bad day. Phanari and i and i don't know whether whether it's nerves or all just lack of rhythm on the day but he wasn't. He wasn't there really and yet roots the total opposite in the finals. He he seems to be one of those players who just gets better in the final. And that's that is the ultimate quality really isn't it probably starts to separate you from the pack and gives him a chance of going really further in his career. I think yeah. Where do we sit to right. Cast baru now. That feels like a sort of conversation. We need to have not ready for identity own stuff because it struck me a labor cup that he was introduced as part of a team. Europe squad that rule in the top ten and that's slightly passed me by the route heads entered the top ten. I think just off the back of the us open. I think he got in that week. Did it quite quietly He's now won five titles this season which is the most of anyone on the tour all of them to fifty level. And i just think you know. Do we put him up with his labor cup teammates in europe and and a very sit surpass. Medvedev ruben bertini. It seems.
