that's fans watching Major League Baseball's Players Association expected to respond later today to the league's latest CBA proposal one of the major issues which connects many of the economic terms is the number of teams in the extended postseason Every one hoping that Major League Baseball will work it all out That's a Bloomberg sports update I'm Doug Doyle This is masters in business with Barry red holes on Bloomberg radio My extra special guest this week is one of my favorite people in the world of finance David kotok is cofounder chairman and chief investment officer of Cumberland advisers which runs about $4 billion in client assets He is the author of numerous books including adventures in uni land from bull to bear with ETFs his most recent publications include lessons from few acidities and Zika lessons from a pandemic he comes to us with 3° from the Wharton school at the University of Pennsylvania David Cox welcome back to Bloomberg Barry it's a pleasure indeed We made it this far through the pandemic and we've made it on a number of fishing trips and experiences for many years and so I'm delighted to be here one And to be on the conversation in the conversation with you and that you are here as well So we're going to circle back to some of the writings you've done but let's just start out talking about what you were referencing These past two years market and an economy working its way through a global pandemic as an investor what do you make of this whole period You know it's an interesting it's an interesting way to start the discussion Studied pandemics you and I spoke about Folks want some normalcy They want business cycles They want the traditional metrics Pandemics don't work that way They never have throughout history And this one is no different And therefore market agents and people who do this type of analysis and examination of this COVID pandemic who haven't studied history Miss the degree of the shock of a pandemic And so what I make of this is how few people have really studied the history There are some of course who have you and I spoke about that But not a lot they don't read history I guess if it doesn't fit within the Twitter limit it's too much to read or understand Who could possibly ask for more than 280 characters on any subject That seems excessive So you and I have been chatting about this big research piece you've been working on on the history of market shocks especially pandemics and health crises through history tell us about what some of your preliminary research has found Well we really divided the market shocks bearing into sort of three segments So antiquity post medieval period think of that as the Black Death plague of 700 years ago up through maybe the century or two centuries ago And then the modern period and particularly the modern period during the Spanish flu misname Spanish flu but John Barry has made the name famous with his book In 1918 which was really a pandemic of 1917 1819 20 and 2021 Wow And the Asian flu period which was the end of the Eisenhower administration That's 1957 and 58 And we looked at the Federal Reserve bank of San Francisco's study of pandemics for 700 years They derive some macroeconomic data It also provided us with a little bit of bibliography We also went looking for more and that's how we are assembling this piece that I have to write in three sections about pandemic shocks not the disease We know a lot about the disease part about interest rates inflation rates wages economic changes growth curves reallocation of labor to capital And what we've kind of find is every single pandemic shock delivers a similar sequence And this one is no different All right so hold on I have to interrupt you So when I think about that list that you gave us the black plague the pandemic of 1918 The 1950s these are all very different environments And I want you to walk me through them First the black plague in the middle of the last millennia how do we even have any sort of data from the 1500s and 1600s Tell us a little bit about the economic impact of the Bubonic plague Okay So what we did is this how do you find economic data That was a real challenge And you can't go to Wikipedia or some other source You've got to open a book It's an old fashioned kind of research So I have 25 books sitting around now in my office they are references historical references and they help me And they help me in this search for information And they also help me by saying what isn't in them So a good example is Sidney Homer's treatise on the history of interest rates Because I can look at interest rate data that he accumulated in his research and find information that corresponds with the time periods of plagues and pandemics At the same time I went into Alan Meltzer's history of the Federal Reserve which covered the period of the creation of the fed from 1913 to 1951 It was the first of the two volumes unfortunately Alan Meltzer died and never completed the second volume Quite fascinating Coming up we continue our conversation with David kotok Chairman and chief investment officer at Cumberland advisers discussing geographic mobility and work from home issues related to the pandemic You're listening to masters in business with very red holes on Bloomberg radio.

whether the number of teams in the extended postseason can be all worked out It's a big part of the contract negotiations We already know that the league has scrapped the first two series for each team starting for the Major League Baseball season in 2022 That's a Bloomberg sports update I'm Doug Doyle Bloomberg opinion informed perspectives and expert data driven commentary on breaking news Welcome to Bloomberg opinion on Bloomberg radio Bring you news comments and insights from Bloomberg opinions worldwide team of editors and columnists I'm your host June Grasso This week some Republican leaders draw scrutiny for comments about Vladimir Putin A party which 30 years ago 40 years ago was led by a person who called the Soviet Union the empire Now it's led by a person who can't find anything bad to say about a guy who's trying to destroy democracy Also on the show America is more energy independent than ever So why are gas prices so high We're still part of the global oil market When prices go up somewhere else they go up here Plus will 2022 really become the biggest travel year to date Some obstacles may prevent that from happening The big danger is whether it's geopolitical or inflation will kind of stop that in its tracks But first CDC director doctor Rochelle Walensky recently announced new mask wearing guidance as the country moves forward through the coronavirus pandemic We want to give people a break from things like mask wearing when our levels are low And then have the ability to reach for them again should things get worse in the future Three years into the COVID-19 pandemic we're beginning to learn of its collateral damage One of the largest is COVID's disruption to cancer prevention and care screenings and treatments were put off with serious consequences Bloomberg opinion columnist Lisa Jarvis says there's a lesson to be learned in all of this The best way to get back on track is to ease access to doctors How vulnerable are cancer patients to COVID Cancer patients are among the most vulnerable That's because often the drugs that they're taking to treat their cancer make them immunosuppressed which means that even if they get vaccinated they might not elicit the same kind of immune response that you or I do And so that makes them very vulnerable Even as we start to take off masks and reopen society there's still going to be at risk for contracting COVID and having a very serious case of it You have a personal story tell us about it That's right In October of 2021 my father in law was diagnosed with late page concrete cancer And it really was complicated by the pandemic from the point that he was diagnosed which happened when he went into the hospital in severe pain and it was overrun with COVID patients And so he was tucked in a hallway overnight He had to sleep there and then the next day was delivered this very bleached diagnosis alone because of COVID He wasn't allowed to have any family with him once he was admitted So his journey kind of continued from there and COVID really affected the way that he received care and his overall experience as a cancer patient This led you to consider the effects of COVID on the screening for cancer Yeah maybe think a lot about ways that COVID had affected cancer prevention care research One of those is screening so as you and I both know in the spring of 2020 everything shut down and the canceled appointments that were for any kind of basic need and that included preventative screenings for things like colon cancer and breast cancer And so we saw something like 10 million fewer diagnostic screens between January and July of 2020 And those things started to open back up that backlog persist And so the worry is that as people continue to delay getting those preventative screenings that when they finally do go in and get that kind of test is going to come in at a point where their cancer is more advanced and harder to treat And also I've heard from people that the backlogs there are unusually long backlogs to get those cancer screening tests That's completely true I mean I'm at an age where I'm supposed to start getting colonoscopies which don't seem very fun It's easy to put it off but my own doctor had me wait a full year because right now they're still seeing people who have some sort of symptom that make them want to put them at the front of the line So this is something that really could persist for a while and one concern is that when people do finally come in and they may have a more advanced cancer than they would have if they'd gotten tested 6 months or a year ago that the healthcare infrastructure isn't quite there to support them after these last two pandemic years So what are some suggestions of how to handle this or how to support it I think one thing that happened during the pandemic that was positive and was necessary but let's hope we keep it is that the cancer community changed the way that some of the rules for how they do clinical trials but also just provide care So if you.

"Here with me and please note that the Allen college basketball podcast is presented by Jersey Mike's, which is a proud sponsor of the nation with the war Jersey bikes. I'd like to offer congratulations to all of the athletes on this season's Naismith watch list and we will update our Naismith watch list in just a little bit. If you're watching on YouTube, please smash the like button like your brain and Davies and while you're here, please go ahead and hit the subscribe button too if you haven't already, we're trying to build this thing. We need you guys to help us do it. So please help us out with that subscribe if you haven't already. We thank you in advance. All right, dead leg, you're in Durham. North Carolina. From Mike's final game, inside Cameron indoors this weekend. Gonna be Saturday. Against North Carolina, I know you were at coach Gates press conference on Thursday. What did the winningest coach in division one men's basketball history have to say in advance of his final game at Cameron? A couple things. One, if you are listening, yes, I don't have my normal mic we are going, we are going, you know, we're going modern here. I'm going on board Mike. Parrish forgot this a week ago. I had to make things equal. So now I don't have the podcast. I might have been very busy packing and writing, then I got halfway to the airport and thought that's right. That's what I forgot. So if you're listening, we'll be back to normal on Sunday when I'm back in Connecticut. Two, a bit of advice for a bit of advice for you. If you turn a 16 minute read into a 7 minute read, you got time to pack dead leg. Do you want to tell the audience what you lost again? I'm both. You want to tell them what happened again? You want to give me advice on stuff that might have been forgotten? I'm both angry and embarrassed. I woke up this morning. I can't find my AirPods. I think I lost another parent last night. Exactly. That's what I thought. Now, number two, got no acknowledgment from you that this podcast broke the news that he would be retiring. Nothing. I'm a little offended. But I move past it. So after that didn't get addressed at his final pre North Carolina press conference, he did touch on a number of different things. You know, I asked him if he was, he had gotten, you know, reflective at a couple of points. And so I had a question a few questions later and I asked him if he was ready to, you know, I know he's physically ready to retire. He mentally made this decision a year ago, but is he emotionally ready to let go of this thing? And he immediately said yes, I am ready. I don't want the season. And now, but when it ends, he is good to go. And to me, the most notable thing that he said, and the press conference is about 30 to 33 minutes, he said, I will have nothing to do with our basketball program when I retire, which I thought was relatively surprising. It's not like he's going to be gone or a ghost. He's going to still have his office, come to duke, be around, help fundraise. He mentioned that, you know, there are facelifts and upgrades and things you can do to actually improve a lot of the things around Cameron indoor stadium and he wants to pitch in and help do that. But his words, I mean, he said, when it comes to the duke men's basketball program, it is John shires. If he wants advice, I'll be here for him, but he's not going to be someone that's showing up to practice, helping devise practice plans, game plans. He even actually in the middle of me asking him a question, he started to go off on why he was ready to be done. And then he said, I don't even know if I'll come to the games, you know, where would I sit? And I said, Mike, I think they'll find a spot for you. But he said, I'm not going to hover. You know, everyone needs their space. And so I thought that to be pretty interesting, in addition to other stuff, he said, but I'll just throw this right back to you. I mean, I found it a little surprising because also I think he addressed it because it had gotten back to him that some people believed, listen, she actually sent a retire, but maybe he'll still be around the program in a prominent way that can understandably acts as a booster for Shire taking over at a young age, the age that she once was when he took over. Were you surprised to hear him say what he said in that regard? Not necessarily because I always assumed he'd be around, but not involved. You know, like around, like visible, but not, yeah, and I never assumed he was going to retire and then help devise game plans or retire and then go to practice every day or even some days. I assume that you turn on a duke, Georgia Tech game, and we'll be sitting somewhere inside Cameron indoor. Maybe not every game, but every once in a while, because that's the way Roy Williams is doing it this season. Like, we're always been everywhere. But Roy's very visible, but you know, I don't think he's in the locker room. You know, given halftime speeches, he's just there. I think because he, you know, he loves basketball, and he loves being around it, and he cares deeply about that school in that program. So he's around, but not involved. John Wooden, I remember when I first got this job and I would go to UCLA games sometime. Like, John wouldn't be there. You know, John wouldn't be, you know, they had a little everybody knew where John wouldn't set. I remember one time it was announced before a game that I was attending at Pauley pavilion that John wood was not going to, that was the thing. They would announce when he's not going to be there. Like coach wooden is not going to be at the game tonight. And I pulled into the parking garage and first spot first floor is reserved for John Wooden. Something like that, and I was like, he's not going to be here. Could I park here? I thought about it. And then I just kept driving. I figured it might cause some problems. But John wouldn't John Wooden was around,.

"An idiot. Oh, what a loser. Yeah, I don't understand. I'm going to get into it with Tim kirkton. I don't understand the equation that's being played out on the owner's side that this makes any sense, Major League Baseball canceling the first two regular season series after the player association turned down their offer. They really didn't move that much at all from the discussions that were taking place on Monday. Rob Manfred was asking a great question by a reporter on Tuesday after this announcement came about why real bargaining didn't begin until three months after the lockout started. Listen to his answer. Hey, rob, understanding that deadlines create urgency you locked out the players to jump start the negotiations. It feels like real bargaining went on just in the last 24 to 36 hours. I'm sure people are wondering why not over the last three months or even longer to get to a point where you're not necessarily canceling games because there's some momentum here. Yeah, I think the best answer to that question is the last ten days. We've been here ready to bargain full committees, owners, players, for ten days, and it got going two days before the deadline. That's the best explanation I can give you. Yeah, that would question was asked by Jesse Rogers Taylor. I didn't hear an answer in the response from rob, did you? It's almost like he's a master obfuscator and it's his job to deflect and take bullets and well done, rob. He did a great job out there. You earn your paycheck. Ken davidoff is leaving the New York Post. He's retiring from covering baseball. He had this exchange as he posed a question to Manfred. Thank you. You've been so kind. It's hard to see you go. Thank you. Really going to miss you. Don't use mutual. Yeah, like that right there. I don't get like rob, who cares what any writer writes about. But that's the exchange on the day when games are canceled. It doesn't make any sense to me. After rob spoke, Andrew Miller, Max Scherzer talked about how long players are willing to not play. Are there discussions about how long guys are prepared to prepare? We're prepared. We've seen this coming in a sense. It's unfortunate, but this isn't new to us. This is not shocking. It's, again, unfortunate, but our communication are willingness to see each other's point of views and to find solutions in a fight for what's right is nothing like I've seen before. I can tell you that. Right, and this has been making in the years. Of seeing things that have happened over the course, specifically of this last CBA, things that have happened to different players that has made us outraged in certain situations that we absolutely have to have corrections and that's why we feel necessary to be able to continue this fight. Here's you and later Tony Clark. Players want to play. We all know that. But the reason we're not playing is simple. A lockout is the ultimate economic weapon. Let me repeat that. A lockout is the ultimate economic weapon. In a $10 billion industry, the owners have made a conscious decision to use this weapon against the greatest asset they have. The players. But the group won't be intimidated. I've seen more unity over the last few years than at any time in our recent history. All right, Taylor, what do you got? All right, buster. Well, I talked about bald man on campus yesterday. I wanted to highlight specifically the episode we recorded after we wrapped up here on baseball tonight. It makes the chef ski's last home game at Cameron indoor stadium this Saturday college game day is gonna be there and my guy J Bill has had some great thoughts and insight on the winding down of his career, the actual specifics.

"You and that's a Bloomberg business flash Tom and Paul Thanks so much greatly appreciate that Karen right now again evicts 4.47 big figure points out 33.3 to Cameron Christchurch now Bloomberg macro strategist Cameron do you see catharsis in the market Do you see sort of a wash out To a degree I think you can probably argue that this sort of thing should have happened last year Given the inflation backdrop but the market sort of blithely ignored the price pressures and were sort of if you will telescoping 6 months worth of volatility into the span of three or four weeks All right so Cameron I got the S&P approaching a 10% decline from its size to look to the futures here NASDAQ close to 15% As you mentioned this is something that people have been talking about for really the last 6 to 9 months in the marketplace Is this just a reflection of boy We're going to be in a rising interest rate environment We're going to have slowing economic growth Is this just it feels fundamental to me Is a fundamental T was a technical to you Probably a little bit of both I mean starting points matter and the starting point was a and extraordinarily accommodative monetary policy at a time where inflation is at sort of multi generational highs And at the same time valuation of risky assets equities crypto whatever you want to call them Has also been extraordinarily high So on those two things are obviously obviously related So it's kind of inevitable that policy normalizes From historically easy settings to something that's probably still easy but less historically easy And when you're starting point is sort of asset valuations on the moon there's just not much room or margin margin of air The way I like to phrase it is that everyone who climbs Everest is a hero right But really the real challenge about climbing Everest is not getting to the summit It's getting down alive And that's the challenge that investors are having to contemplate now That's how I feel after 8 a.m. every day here Cameron people talk with their money Do you have any flow analysis in this deep into 2022 market that we're having I mean probably nothing that would excite the average retail investor What I will say is we have seen quite a bit of money over the last month be deployed into bedding on more fed hikes over the next year to 18 months And we're now obviously pricing and for 2022 more tightening the fed itself is projecting So if you are looking for some sort of ray of sunlight in this dark January it could come on Wednesday if Jerome Powell basically backed down this idea that circulating with the fed is going to do four hikes this year with potential upside If he kind of holds the course of three and says well the market might be getting a little ahead of itself That could provide a temporary respite Although I would suggest that the ultimate criterion for determine the impact of rates on the market is probably on the terminal price What are we going to price for the fed at the end of the cycle And there we're obviously still well below what the fed itself is projecting So while it could just represent a shift in the shape of the fed pricing curve in the near term fewer rate hikes over the next 12 months could be at least some sort of catalyst for a little bit of short covering for the equity market Cameron just before you came on the air here we have Tom's favorite part of the show which is our sponsored crypto update But we've got Bitcoin down 50% Does that mean anything to you No I mean do you know what the change in Bitcoin is year on year I do not It's about zero Okay About 3% I think If you dance with the devil you can't be a surprise smelling of sulfur I'm glad you bring up the devil Thank you so much Cameron Christ here This morning Speak of the devil Let's talk about the blue Devils victorious basketball game this weekend We go to our authority on blue Devils basketball Paul Sweeney I was in Cameron indoor stadium Saturday for the noon tip off of duke versus Syracuse orange It was a great game for duke They played extraordinarily well offensively but even better defensively and that's what coach K's all about So it was good to see it was great to be there The kids were crazy as you would expect them to be in Cameron indoor stadium It was packed Everybody who's masked up they had the ushers have signs now Tom and they hold up to sign and they just say mask up If they see somebody with a mask down they just say mask up and that's kind of what they do now but it was a great day It Cameron indoor stadium There were some college hockey this weekend And what we saw was empty arenas I really thunderstruck Because Penn State I watched the pen stake and they were packed Bryce Jordan whatever I don't know what it means if it's COVID or whatever Okay Yeah So it's hard to coach K I did I did have a couple more he's doing great You know he's fired up for the I think this could be oh here we go Here we go This could be the year Ken Rich I'm calling it now Oh look an email from Peter from Chapel Hill Who's this guy on there talking to basketball I went to Chapel Hill walked around the camp Oh you did I tell you what First time No been there a bunch but that is probably one of the most beautiful campuses around the world Here we go Come on It's compensation time here Tom Mister Peter from the 6th floor we have to be nice You have to be nice Yeah Anyways that's good to see you in coach K having this huge strong strong season as well Futures and negative 68 down futures at negative four one three This is "Bald men on campus. With Jay billis, Ellis and Seth Greenberg. I'm Seth Greenberg, and as you know, courtside had a pretty good rumble. We got a new podcast coming up. It's gonna be really good. Bald man on campus with my cohorts. Jay billis and the great lafont so Ellis. Now think about this now. You're talking about three guys that look at the game of basketball for different prisons. Obviously, I coached for 33 years. The fox or Wallace, by the way, he was not a good player. He was a great player to it, the NBA player, and he is going into the Ring of Honor at Notre-Dame, one of the great arms you can get as a basketball player, Notre-Dame. Terrific background from a player's perspective. Ring of Honor for the great Alfonso and by the way, Jay billis is Jersey is hanging in Cameron indoor stadium. Not in the rafters and coach case bathroom, but you know, it's still hanging. Jay Phillips will look at the game, obviously for both their player and coach at a perspective that global perspective he has on the game. It's going to be a great conversation to have great guests great banter. It's going to be free spirited. And this is going to be great called basketball season. Think about this. Coach case final year. Yes, it's going to be a story each and every day. That's just the way it is. Kentucky, are they back? The impact of the transfer portal. How impactful will these transfers be? And then new coach is a new place, whether it's Chris feared, whether it's you for Davis taking over at North Carolina. Where it's Mike Woodson going back to Indiana. Shocker smart's gonna do a great job at Mark Ken. You've got Tommy Lloyd at Arizona. The season is around the corner and we're going to bring you inside college basketball. Bald man on campus, follicle challenge, but brilliant, no less. To learn more, listen to my guy, Jay billis, and Lafayette Ellis. I'm Jay billis of ESPN. I've been on college game day since it started. I've been on bald men on campus on the ACC network since it started. And from the inception of bald men on campus, the podcast, I'm gonna be here from the birth of this great podcast until it's untimely death, not sure when that's gonna be. It could be soon. And I will find some wellness. I'm gonna be Jay and Seth's bald head brethren and I can't wait to get started on our podcast. The energy that we have the chemistry that we have. The forwards of bringing that in a podcast version with some of the latest college basketball information and Jay, I'm excited about two bigs in the country this year that freshman duke has one Gonzaga has one. You know, I'm all about the big shape. Well, thank God you are that somebody will talk about the big guys because this is a guard dominated business. It seems like all the guards go into coaching and they go into media. We might be the only big guys that are working today, but with bald man on campus, the podcast, lafonta, what we're gonna have is the three of us bald guys have well over a hundred years of college basketball experience. 80 years with Seth Greenberg and then you and I have ten, ten years each of us to a hundred. And one of the things I'm looking forward to most is that bald man on campus will take you inside the huddle, will take you inside the locker room so far inside you'll get the stench of Seth Greenberg's old gym bag from fairly Dickens. And we'll have the best coaches on our podcast, the best players, and we'll discuss things far and wide, not only in the game on the court, but off the core issues of the day and we'll also get into the things we've eaten on college game day road trips that we shouldn't have eaten. The things that Seth feels most guilty about on a Monday. And we will make sure that we wash our hands in the process. Yeah, I am looking forward to not only a great season, but I think we're going to have two great teams to start the year. That doesn't mean they're going to be the best teams at the end, but Gonzaga and UCLA have played that epic game and the NCAA tournament last year. I think you're going to be the two best teams to start the year. UCLA has everybody back and then some and good saga is loaded again. I don't know how Mark few does it, but Gonzaga and UCLA, this is going to be a West Coast bias year. We're going to be talking about the West Coast and the Pacific time zone from the jump. And I look at your Alma mater just getting missed that much on this is 1995. I talked about earlier some pigs and some freshmen that are coming in. How about Powell and Cheryl, 16 two 40, knocking down from being played with this back to the basket can actually change speed change direction, a really good passer, him on the front line with Mark Williams who had a breakout gear toward the end of the season last year could be one of the best front courts in the country. Yeah, the most compelling front court since Jay billis and Mark alley played together in the mid 80s, so that's going to be a great year to do. But it's going to be a great year on bald men on campus, the podcast. Don't miss it. I don't know where you go to get it. But wherever you go, go..

"What it's not windy. Could remember what happened when they had the Trump deal at Lake Travis. She had Moz. You know, taking on water, we gotta dump. It was kind of tough. You be careful out there. Be careful on there. By the way, the game is it. The Duke game is turned into a heck of a game. The fighting Irish of Notre Dame lead 87 85 with a minute to play. In a special afternoon game and Cameron Indoor Stadium that's while for nobody's there, except a bunch of cutouts. But we'll keep tabs on that Longhorns in case state playing at seven o'clock tonight. What do we expect? What would we consider acceptable from the Longhorns Tonight? We'll get into that before we get out of here as well. But let's talk about gambling for a second. We mentioned this a little bit yesterday. That there is Momenta, um toe. Dan Patrick disagrees. But Mo mentum for gambling spill legalize sports betting in the state of Texas. Specifically yesterday it was an alliance between three of the major sport in sports franchise all in Dallas Cowboys, the Mavericks the Texas Rangers backing legislation that would allow Texans to vote to lift the state's ban on gambling. Uh, the numbers kind of striking to me. Because forever. It was just Nevada that had sports betting. Correct, CASS. Uh, 25 States have legalized sports betting. Synced fellow Yeah, so they're done gone Half the country has got it. But we here in the great state of Texas don't have it, And apparently, it's not close. Well, yesterday we talked about the story of those major franchise is backing this bill. And Ed. You guys cover this earlier. Correct? Can you give us an update on what Danny said to us? Well, Danny go. Okay. Dan Patrick, who used to be a talk show host used to be in our industry. He was on the radio. He was Before he was Danny Gold. They changed the name of Dan Patrick got into politics, and he just put a big old bucket of cold water on everything today, he told Ah Lovett radio station today that I've never been in favor of it, meaning gambling in Texas. He says. We are nowhere close to having the votes for it. We don't even have a bill that's been filed in the Senate on the issue. When you don't have a sponsor. It's not even Bill. You spend much time or thinking about it. I don't spend much time up because the numbers are against it, and he's against it. And this is so short sighted by the lieutenant governor. Because all you have to do and we've talked about this before fellows look at all the countless people who are leaving every weekend to Louisiana and Oklahoma to gamble and the state really need hotels and see big shows and have great food and it is show so short sighted. By Dan Patrick. To say no, We're not going to do it because I don't want it. S O. It's not good. But unless you have Dan Patrick, you won't have anything in this session of the Legislature. So the Republicans have the 18 to 13 majority in the state Senate. And I guess you need 21 votes to even get an amendment to the voters. They said. They're nowhere close to being able to have to do that, Um He also points out that the revenue that is what we're talking about that you know the potential revenue that we're allowing to go to Oklahoma Go online offshore, You know, go toe to your guy down on the corner that it represents, in fact, a small amount of money in a state that what does he say? Spends $125 billion a year that everybody's talking about all this revenue that you're passing up? Actually, it doesn't even really move the needle. He says. Well, he's wrong about that, because I think he's just checking what the state would get in gambling. Per se. He's not talking about the gas tax. He's not talking about the booze tax. He's not talking about Hotel motel tax and stuff Solid eight, and he's like I just think it's very short sighted by him. But But here's the deal if he goes home and says, I'm proposing gambling He's gonna have a primary opponent and he'll get beat because that base of the Republican Party has always hated gambling. And you know it. Xeni vice. I hear where you're coming from with that, Ed. But this is the question to both of you Help me with this Usually when it's big vice things like this. Like what? The legalization of marijuana and everything. If you look deep enough, like booze is funding people to go lobby them, not legalizing it. If that makes sense already. Where do you think? Is there some force? That's lobbying this not to happen in Texas. Like I would think maybe it's other hotels or casinos and everything. But wouldn't you want them to open this up? Because you could get a new territory or something like that you with? They can't just be. He doesn't want to get primary. You know, I understand that, but To me. It's like there's gotta be other monetary forces behind the scenes that really are battling against this. There are veto because Las Vegas has a big Lobbying presence against this Oklahoma does New Mexico does in Louisiana and Mississippi? Do they have paid lobbyist to say no, We don't do this. Don't do this. And my question is how much money is going into the can write coffers of these Republicans and some Democrats who say Oh, no, we can't have this. It's the work of the devil. How much money and how many drinks and how many dinners and how many things are they funding through this lobbying money Because it is apparent you're right. You know you're right on target. It's Vegas. It's Louisiana, Mississippi and Oklahoma said, Oh, that that would kill the Windstar, which is a spectacular place that would kill Windstar because they get everybody from from from Dallas up north of there to go every weekend. So shocked us has been to the chairman of the Choctaw Casinos Step in Durant, Oklahoma. There shot under the been a shot to kill that supposed to be good at poker events up there. Everyone said that I've been to Lake Charles and Harris, and it is really nice, and they've got good one too good golf courses there, But But it's just the short sightedness of politicians who their main goal is to do what, fellas get reelected..

Is Duke Done? A Season of NCAA Basketball Surprises

"Myron. I think the last time we spoke. I was at Cameron Indoor Stadium asking You what you thought about Zion Williamson. That was the last time and now Zion's gone and things haven't been as good for college basketball since he left. Myron Medcalf is a senior college basketball reporter for ESPN. Men's college basketball has been having a pretty weird season. Can you explain to us sort of the state of things and why some of the usually omnipresent contenders your dukes your? Unc's Kentucky aren't even in the top five while it's a meeting in a year like this anybody who tells you that they know exactly what's going to happen in March. They're lying because there was no one no expert. That understands kind of what's happened so far. It's just been a wild year but I think you can look at some of the things that transpired Really at the start of the season. I think the James Wiseman suspension by the answer. Aa For twelve games after being ruled ineligible. You have a Memphis team that I think had a chance to be much better if he sticks around. Lamelo ball who if he follows the traditional track and goes to a UCLA USC that changes the spotlight on those programs as well But instead you have a lot of the blue blood teams that don't have the lottery level talent that they had a year ago. Duke is still a top ten level team but they don't have anyone close To a Zaylon you'd have a team like Gonzaga that had to lottery picks last year. They got some good players. Nothing like that so the the powerhouse teams are just really good team which has closed the gap so now a San Diego State with the Malachi Flint and against double team Malachi for three huge three by malachite lend. That's a really good team. Competing for number one see the Dayton with an ob top suddenly was one of the best teams in America. And I think it's because you just don't have the same concentration of talent we're accustomed to seeing with your Kentucky's in Dukes. Then you'RE K. Use Marin what is it like covering a season like this where there are really clear favorites and no one seems to have any idea. What's going on this year? You just don't really know who to chase like. You don't know who to say okay. That's the team to watch. Because they're really good. It just feels like a pretty fragile college basketball scene which is great for the tournament for everything. We didn't have in college basketball this year in terms of no established kind of powerhouse team. I think we're going to see the benefits of it. Come into double A. Tournament. Time when we could have one of the craziest craziest. March madness is we've ever had so. Let's talk about Duke. Quit even when dukes not great? We're still going to talk about Dick. Because it's really interesting. Myron how much struggled on Saturday they lost to Virginia Virginia wins. That look the three point line. Just couldn't connect before that game. They were ranked seventh. But I imagine they could go down even further now right. Yeah I mean this is a team that I think will will fall in the rankings. Duke has run into some teams who put on their Superman capes in the last couple of games. And that's change things you have. Nc State which made sixty one percent of its threes and that loss A week ago wake forest mixed fifty four percent of its threes. These things those teams had done before they phase Duke and Virginia really as just a team on the rise So I think duke got caught in kind of a weird gauntlet there but trae Jones has been sort of their closer whereas a year ago you could go to RJ bear. You could go to Cam Reddish you could go on. And now they're a bit more one dimensional They're much closer to what you see. Maybe in a typical season where they're right there with Louisville and Florida state and Virginia and the other teams at the top of the ACC. But they don't have a guy who's GonNa carry them to the top of the League and just help them separate. That's just not enough talent in college basketball for really any team to do that. But especially in the league like the Agency. So you're in Kansas right now in Kansas. The number one team. You were there to watch them. Play Kansas State and it was a right because these two teams Fighting literally fighting back in January Shit and now the benches inc just unnecessary. That's not good. This is Paul. This is bad this is but on Saturday night myron. They shook hands before the tip off in. Kansas came away with the victory. What did you make of the number team in their performance? Well I I'm just glad nobody fought again because that that would have been bad Glad to have that moment before the game I will say. I've never been to a regular basketball game outside of the NCAA tournament that had as much security as that game. Had I mean they were everywhere about? I'm glad there was an incident. I I think Kansas is sort of the perfect team in a year like this. Do they have a lottery pick? No but they've got this really balanced group of guys who are pretty good offensively. They've been pretty efficient team and they got two guys who win they're together. They're hard to stop. It's Dotson In Gaza Buki who when they're on the floor together. Kansas made about sixty percent of his shots inside the art. Their opponents have made about forty one percent of their shots inside the three point line. That's the story right there when those two guys are together. Kansas is certainly the best team in America. But you also look at them and go. Are they one bad night from Abu? Koa from struggling. He was hurt part of the game on Saturday against the bad Kansas state team boss feeds it in bounced past as a group. Six to shoot you back down spits travels this is the shot ultimately but he rolled his ankle. Oh this is good has approved. He is clutching his right foot so Kansas is good. But like a lot of teams there. One bad moment badge stretch away from being right there with everybody else. Well now. It seems like Kansas is going to run away with the big twelve after Baylor who was ranked number two going into the weekend got upset by. Tcu How bad was this for Baylor? It's always interesting right. Like Baylor won every game but one for like two months straight and now all of a sudden last week I think a lot of people are panicking and that happens to a team. Like Baylor which doesn't have the brand recognition of Duke or Kentucky or a Kansas. So in hard times. I think we may be overemphasized Some of their struggles. I think you obviously don't want to continue losing and losing to a team like Tcu is not good For them but this is a team that again played a tissue team that did things that they haven't done in the past made forty five percent of the threes on Saturday against Baylor. They made thirty three percent of their shots from three point. Line before that so that can be more of an anomaly. I think Baylor overall though is one of the best defensive teams in America made the best defensive team not named Kansas. So that's GONNA keep them in every game that they play well one team. That's right up there with Kansas and Baylor is Gonzaga perennial contenders They did lose to. Byu about a week ago but they're still considered favorites to win the WCTC. How good is this Gonzaga team? I think they're really really good me now like I think they're amazing. I just think this is a year where because everyone has been sort of even you get one loss and all of a sudden. Gonzaga gets the whole. You haven't played anybody. And why are you losing you know in the West Coast Conference and I think that's unfair? Byu was a really good team like Byu's go into selection Sunday with maybe a five or six seed. Maybe even better so. There's nothing wrong with losing a road game in that environment to a good team. They have the number one offense in America a flea Petra. Sav is one of the best young players Indian tire country. We would know what mark few the head coach can do. And they've got two losses all year. I think that is one of the best teams in America and I think will prove it wants double a. Tournament starts so most of the rankings have some combination of Kansas Baylor in Gonzaga in the top. Three we'll see how this weekend changes that but after that myron gets pretty interesting. I'm you've got Dayton San Diego state. Did you see that coming up before the season began out like I wish I could lie and say I did? I wish I could be that dude. It was like yeah. I called San Diego State back in October in Dayton. But I didn't I mean like ob top and a Dayton is suddenly this lottery pig. And I don't think anybody saw that Common Dayton on Friday against Davidson Mia. Think about this number. They may ninety six percent of their shots inside the three point. Line Ninety six percent like I don't care if you're playing a high school junior Varsity Team. That's really difficult to do in Dayton. Did that and not only did they do it. They've been doing it Throughout the season just really inefficient offensive team in San Diego State. A team that lost its first game about a week and a half ago. The they've been role as well in their line of people who will say San Diego State doesn't play the competition that the other top teams have faced in college basketball. That's not true. They beat the. Byu Team that just beacons Aga- they beat Creighton. Which I think is the surprise of college basketball naked win at all by thirty one points and they beat Iowa another solid team another Aa tournament team by ten points so the best teams that were thrown at San Diego State. They won those games now. They did lose the UNLV Week ago but beyond that there have been a really really good team and I think in a year like this again. You're not going to run into a team with two lottery. Picks it feels like they can make Iran as well both San Diego state ending
