"Their home opener this past sunday. Ceiling their eighty ninth straight season without going undefeated only five. Nfl franchises have a longer streak of losing at least one game. Yes that is me telling you to settle down and find some perspective after disappointing steelers loss. It is after all along season at this point. The steelers could still win the super bowl or they could lose sixteen games. There's lot more of this story to right but that doesn't mean there isn't anything to talk about today. We're gonna talk about what went wrong. Against the the las vegas raiders from the steelers defense to the run game to ben rothlisberger. I'm your host jeffrey benedict. Welcome to the cutting room floor. We're start with what we saw this weekend. And before we dig in too much. I just wanna say that. Now it's time for a little braggadocio. While i wave my arms like ralph macho My keys to this game heading into week. Two i gave an x factor for the raiders. I was with marquis de on the steelers. Touch down on die in that show. I called henry runs the third as being a potential game changing player. Because with the steelers paying attention to darren waller rudd's was that guy that could break a huge play and break open what i expected to be a largely. A close scored defensive battle. Well yeah that kind of happened. That kind of happened with the steelers. Don't have a ton of speed in the secondary. Terrell edmonds is their fastest defensive back so if you get isolation on the outside and i believe the play Rugs broke for sixty. One yard touchdown. He he was on a callow. Witherspoon was on him again. I predicted that before. I knew joe haden was going to be out for the game But they got they got. Henry runs the third on. Are number four defensive back which really really. He's our number six. We're just missing are one of our top guys and we were sat james. We sat justin lane. Sorry lots his name for a second. We justin lane forever and boom sixty. One yard touchdown. That really broke that game open. So i kinda caught that one. Not that i'm happy about that One of my other main keys to this game was the steelers winning the interior line battle. i made that my kids game. 'cause watching the the ravens raiders games. What stood out to me. Is that while. Derek carr was getting pressured around the edge quite a bit second half of the game. He starts being able to step up into a clean pocket. And when derek carr can step up into a clean pocket. He's a really good quarterback when you put people in his face is not nearly as good so car against the steelers. One of my things was we. Gotta we gotta keep guys in his face. We can't step up into the pockets. So that the pressure from the edges can get to him well. Tj wise was absolutely crushing. When he was in this game he was playing phenomenal. He was doing a fantastic job. And for those snaps the longest pass. Play with watt on the field with seventeen yards and there wasn't a single deep attacked a deep throw attempt by derek carr with tj lot on the field through the point tj. By got injured. There was not a single deep pass through by car. Tj what left the field the very first play after tj Left the field with his injury was a twenty five yard. Pass to second tied foster moreau. And when worse from there by the end of the game derek carr had thrown eight deep passes connected on five of them for one hundred sixty four yards and a touchdown the reason he was able to do. That is because with tj white gone and simply cam hayward in there being the only real big time threat. The raiders were able to give. Derek carr a clean pocket and he was able to look downfield. See what was happening and make take take shots. Take good shots. Downfield step into his throws make throws without being hit. They won the game. The moral of that story is even with steph onto it out. Even with bud duprey gone end. Advertisement is a good player. But we've seen. He's he's struggling this season. A bit with this step up responsibility and the step up in in attention. The he's gotten he's not getting socks he doesn't even have a. Qb hit yet this season. But even with him there with tj with steph onto it out tj white and cameron. Heyward are a lot to deal with. And what hayward and supporting staff of chris warmly. Alex highsmith marlin ingram. Melvin ingram is playing really well but he's not tj. Why he's not cameron heyward. He's not on their level. Hayward watt and supporting staff is a lot to deal with just cam hayward and supporting staff wasn't not too much for a banged up raiders. Offensive line they were able to shift the pocket to count for hayward Hayward's penetration and really the offensive line. Just had to steer cameron heyward to one side of the pocket and let derrick walk. Go the other way. Well when cameron heyward can say okay You know i'm gonna rush. I'm going to penetrate. And i'm going to go to the right side from the defensive perspective. I'm gonna rush to the right side of the pocket and cause havoc. There will have tj one on the left. You can't just be like okay. I'll take a step to the left. No you're taking a step towards teach what you're taking a step towards getting lit up. You're taking a step towards a fumble. You know you are taking a step towards a big defensive play. You can't do it with just hayward gable step outside. That was a huge problem for the ravens. That's big reason. The ravens lost is they were not able to contain derek. Carr they were. They were not able to crash his pocket. They were not able to put people around his legs bodies around his legs people in his face hands on you know threatening to swat the football away. They weren't able to do that. And the raiders came back on with car. Throwing deep downfield the steelers. Despite the success they had defending. Darren waller like i said before. They're one of the best at defending tight ends in the national football league the last three seasons since they Drafted devin bush brought in Tara lawson and brought in a mega fitzpatrick. They've been one of the best they did again. That was different. But it didn't matter because in the end when they could not disrupt derek cars pocket derek carr was able to throw downfield for five of eight for one hundred sixty four yards and a touchdown. You're not gonna win a game when you give that up to the opposing quarterback and you're offenses in scoring. Yeah that's a shootout. If you're giving up deep passes like that. That's a shootout as over twenty yards per attempt on deep balls. You don't even know what the steelers putting up on. Those numbers was it was awful talking about darren. Waller i put this clip up on twitter. Cassivi s rise. It came back from the half. I was watching. It was just like yes. Oh my goodness thank you cbs. 'cause i don't have all twenty two film yet which is awful and stupid But cbs puts out the alternative film and they show how. The steelers are bracketing. "And we were wrong there. I mean they completely changed their game. Plan and threw a curveball buffalo. That brian day did not adjust and it basically involves the area of buffalo's team that we were concerned about that wasn't improved this off season. Which is the line. But pittsburgh only sent blitz twelve percent of dropbox last week. Last season the week fourteen matchup pittsburgh sent blitz fifty seven percent of dropbox so pittsburgh basically only rushed with their front and job guys into coverage. And that's how they they elected defend buffalo's passing of that you know you can play that style when cameron heyward goes out and gets twelve pressures in. Tj watt gets another seven and both those guys you look at the end of the week finished top nine in pass rusher in weight. You add five. More pressures for melvin gordon. Those three guys basically had their buffalo's front all day long and that's why they want but it's important to kind of mention that because miami does not really shown ability to get natural pressure with with their front for you. You just look at what. Brian floors is done through his entire tenure in miami. It's been all manufactured pressure and one of their best defensive. Lineman ray davis is out for a couple of weeks. So flora's can't actually mimic what pittsburgh pulled off last week if they tried the other thing that we've seen from miami because they manufacture pressure. And because they spend gobs of money at corner they live in cover one. They live in cover to man. It makes sense right. It's the highest paid secondary in the nfl by fifteen percent. The problem is buffalo has shredded flora's as cover one and cover two men four straight games. You mentioned some of those numbers right. Buffalo's one and i want to kind of put this in context of just flora's buffalo's one four meetings by an average of fifteen with flora's going against buffalo. The total has gone over in those four games by average of twenty point. one points. Because that's not how you defend buffalo in the receivers so that's going to be interesting and last week new england. I thought made a real crucial mistake. They should have beat the dolphins. Not just because of the fumble late but josh mcdaniels didn't really adapt in game. Patriots went out. Spent a ton on john. Smith hunter henry so they used a bunch of twelve formation fifty percent of snaps last week from twelve but when new england actually spread things out and went with three wide receiver sets mack. Jones lit up the dolphins eighteen for twenty one nine point three attempt sixty seven percent passing success rate. Buffalo's not gonna make that mistake. They live and eleven personnel with three whites and that is the reason they have been able to shred the dolphins. And i'm not quite sure. The dolphins have the personnel to mimic a style that pittsburgh implemented last week. You know it's interesting when you talk about josh allen and some of those numbers and obviously it's more important to put in context with those four meetings against floors. I found it fascinating from an individual accolades standpoint. Josh allen is one. Afc player of the week six times in his career pain. Three of those times have come when he's facing the dolphins defense. So this is a quarterback who's going to be brimming with confidence and has every reason to believe so you would expect buffalo like you said given the scheme at dell encounter to be a little bit more dynamic. I mean stefan digs and cool beasley. Were able to eat. Catching seventeen passes on twenty-six targets. But they never had the explosive big play. Potential there with those near misses. That josh allen had to deal with on the other side of the ball. You've talked a little bit about the dolphins game against the patriots. Miami essentially in my opinion put together two drives one the first drive of the game and then one coming out of half other than that. They were pretty average at best. You look at two. Nothing's going to blow you away from a statistical profile that he put forth. I what. I found fascinating were brian. Floors is comments about the offensive line. Configuration we talked about austin jackson being upgraded thinking that he was gonna play a role then flora's starts liam aiken berg and pretty much says. Hey look we're gonna play the best five guys whether it's a shot fired off the bauer an inspirational tactic. Let's see how miami figures that o. Line this week against the buffalo defense. That's gonna get pressure onto it so it was a really tough game to gauge. I went back watched. It saw some of it live. I thought all things considered miami's offense did okay. It's it's to his first road star with fans in the stands. Austin jackson who you mentioned at left tackle did not play an offensive snap. My understanding is and we all thought right. We did shows last week. Saying austin jackson's out with the big c adam. Schefter reported it. And then all of a sudden saturday he gets upgraded but because he missed the entire week of practice floors is game. Plan didn't really include him at that point and so he played three special team snaps and he came out this week and was adamant that austin jackson is the left tackle liam eichenberger shifted from right tackle to left. Tackle effectively downgrading to positions will fuller did not play with his one game suspension. We've seen the impact. That will fuller. Had on quarterbacks better quarterbacks than to i mean deshaun watson splits with willfuller versus without our staggering. You say all those things and you're facing a new england patriots defense that we think is going to go back to being one of the top ten in the nfl. Miami's fourteenth most efficient offense in week. One not terrible. I think there's some meat left on the bone. Obviously to miss amisi throws completion percentage was three and a half percent below expectation through terrible pack and a crucial stage of the game. When the pressure was on. I thought he handled pressure terribly. Twelve and a half passer rating on his seven pressure drawbacks. When to was throwing with play action he struggled his intermediate passing left a lot to be desired on throws in the ten to nineteen yard window. One for nine with a pick and zero passer rating. Now waddell and parker did drop to balls in that window. So factor that in a little bit there was also a level of predictability with miami's offense and that's one thing that does make me a little concerned is great as brian floors as ben changing the culture and bringing new guys in it's been a revolving door at o. c. You know first comes in. He brings over new england wide receiver coach and the scheme is too complex for the young guys. Then he goes to ninety eight year. Old chan gailey who devised this system for ryan fitzpatrick and not to a and just terrible and now you have a dual coordinator situation in. No one knows where they stand..

"I had the jets winning twenty four twenty one so was all the way wrong on that one right next game was a solid one though very good competition between two great organizations pittsburgh steelers versus the buffalo bills for this game. I had buffalo winning twenty six twenty I wasn't terrible on the score. But i was wrong on. Who's gonna win Yeah pittsburgh steelers took this one twenty three to sixteen actually And i mean stand out performance from linebacker. Tj why with two sacks five qb hits and a tackle for a loss all over the place. There's still somebody out there that had a better performance in him but very solid situation for him absolutely and the steelers. Let's talk about the steelers. Defense was always going to be the strength and that was especially evident. Has it kept the game. Close in the first half in spurred the second half comeback Yeah they needed to warm up. First half was a little shaky for pittsburgh. Second half is definitely when it got it done. It made his win. Happened of pittsburgh's twenty unanswered points. Seventeen were the result of two bills. Turnovers on downs and a block plant slash return touchdown which was put into motion when cameron heyward had a third down sack on josh allen. One play early. Tj white just off. The mass of payday had sex and was disruptive forced out the afternoon. The bills managed to convert seven of sixteen third downs. But they were oh into on fourth downs. The offense has work to do all right. They have to work out some of these pains that they had early on but the defense showed sunday. It's more than capable of basically buying off some time. All right offense to like. I said had to get get going like old. Motor robots Degrees in getting really vibrating through man But the old line what. The line was the biggest question mark answering the game. Any remains the same the line which included two rookies. Okay not one but this line includes two ricky's making their nfl debut They were you know almost absent in their first. Half steelers had rushing yards in first round. Pick hairs was averaging one point one yards per carry. Rosberg are roth Mamas and his name rothlisberger also got sacked twice in the first half. The second half was better in the run game. Picked up behind the line with seventy six total yards and four yards per carry. So i mean there could have apart on. My things will slow. I think they were having a lot of confidence in what they're bringing to the table in the rain game immediately and it just didn't it didn't clock out that way. It's just not high went down as for the bill. Despite a dominating defense defensive effort in the first two quarters the bills allow twenty straight points to the steelers coming out of the half and lost a commanding lead The defense allow pittsburgh to put together three drives of nine plus plays in the second half along and failed the Generate assistant pressure against a young offensive. Line the bills also had a black which will turn into a td. And that's cut those kinds of turnovers you don't want whatsoever It only hurts. You doesn't even give you a chance. I mean it. It's a tough thing to overcome especially in tie game But i mean candidate can can build replicate. What they year was is just the funky start or is this what they are now. Will if are being transparent. I think it will just a rough start straight up And still is a coach. Will you gotta give them their props. So it's a tough team to beat if you're not completely prepared warm everything like that Accuracy downfield proved to be a problem for josh allen. In the first game of the season despite facing the lowest blitz rate of his career and that information came from espn stats and info He completed thirty of fifty. One passes a career high in pass attempts for two hundred seventy yards against the steelers and had trouble connected with both stefan digs air colby's The offensive line one of the teams biggest questions. coming incidents also struggled with allen's limited movement which played a part in the steelers not needed to blitz release. So they just you know he's gonna stay the pocket they didn't have to keep them in the pocket But we also know what josh cable of outsider pocket. So was this. Josh was coaching thing. Not sure but i'm sure going forward we will learn more about the team This is a team that i feel like we still. We still have high expectations for them as being a conference champion contender for sure for for sure. Okay that that's out of the question. That should be very obvious But it is not easy to make a decision on really both teams yet. Really both teams. We need to see like just come back in the second half and come back with a win. That doesn't say enough of bain was looking real sloppy in the beginning in run game gotta have often. I mean defense wind championship but offense deadly helps get you there as for sure. So that's something that both sides can look into san francisco versus the detroit lions. I had the oh. I had a winning twenty eight to seven will towards the end of the game. Detroit made it much more of a game in san francisco is making much more of a splash. Point side so wrong again. I got a winner right but not how it went down. It wasn't the whole story. San francisco forty niners one. Forty one Upon detroit lions thirty three so they only lost by eight in made it all the way to the forty one one of the highest games of the weekend For three quarters the forty niners offered a reminder of how dominant they can be when they are healthy a firing on all cylinders they also led up late in nearly coughed. Twenty eight point coughed up. The twenty point lead The needed caveat here is that the lions again look like contenders for the number one overall. Pick in next year's draft if the niners are going to retire to contender status. They can't let their foot off the gas especially against inferior opponents So was this a hiccup on san francisco de france or detroit. Lions offense just solid will more calmly gentlemen more to see how the forty niners continue to integrate trae Because they did put him in in this game lands through his first career. Touchdown has on his second. Nfl snap and i pass in the league. But only played sparingly that Sparingly after that taking a lot of four snaps taken a total of four snaps because the game was essentially over a halftime. It was over at halftime. There was no need for coach. Shannahan to show too much of what he had his mining high plan on using lands. But it's clear he won't be afraid to put the rookie quarterback in get him involved in the games in order to have his skillset involved. I guess so. We will be seeing trae last this year but even though he worked his game. This is definitely a pattern. We have seen time after time. Just not worth Alternate those quarterbacks that in the nfl isn't that efficient. And then you know a little bit more unfortunate news. The san francisco forty niners have been you know no stranger to disappointing injuries of course But the one that took place this past sunday might be the most devastating yet with seven minutes. Fifty four seconds left in their victory win against the detroit. Lions quarterback jason. Vernet suffered a right knee injury. That both he a team. One thing I want to hit on is the hard count on any of those forced down, so I didn't see Josh or here, Josh. Making attempt to do it. I mean, that's five yards right there and a lot of cases. I mean, that's an automatic first down and keeps us moving. I'll tell you this, though. Uh, Sean on one of the fourth downs, there might have been I don't know what the fourth down it was one of the fourth downs. They did line up and Um, what they do is they give a hard count, And if the defense jumps into the neutral zone more snaps it. But there's not really a play that they've got to play called. But Nobody believes they're going to snap it because I don't think the defense did. What happened was the Steelers twitched and Moors. Took a chance knowing that they weren't you know, that was their chance. He snapped it to Josh on a play when they didn't cross into the neutral zone, and the play went off. And then it didn't it didn't It was in shotgun. Um, so the play didn't come off, because, um, You know, they were trying to get a hard count of five yard penalty on a cheap snap. So you'll see the bills do that once in a while they'll get up to the line. Everybody else settled in there and Josh, give the hard count if they jump into the, uh Neutral zone. Morse will snap it and not even know if they have a play or not. They may have some rules they follow, but they're trying to get that. And that did happen once that I noticed the other day, But you're right. Hard count is would help. It looked like when Joshua wanted to go for it on fourth down, and he's putting his hands up and wants to go. I think that's an attempt to get that hard. Count off. Let the time run out, line up and see who bumps because You know if they jumped with that's it, You know, we're moving the ball. Yeah, flash his hands every once in a while. I don't think it was 1/4 down, but he was hard counting, trying to get them to jump. But you're dealing again with a veteran Steelers defensive line. You know, Lulu has been in this league over 10 years. So as Cameron Heyward and what's been around long enough, where typically as disciplined and has coached as they are They don't fall for that all that often. Not maybe, like some other teams, perhaps so, yeah, uh, didn't really use it a lot. I get your point, but I did see it once, and it didn't work. Um, let's get back to the tweet sheet. Where we've got a couple more of your comments ready and waiting. Jack says Biggest takeaway was the defense played pretty well seemed to lock up the run game. Correct they did, and at least early, there was better pass rush, but I am concerned that the interior old line really struggled. And the Steelers gave Gave league a blueprint to mess up our passing attack. Allen and his wide receivers looked a bit off if you have faith that your front for can win against this bills offensive line. Then? Yeah, there might be a chance that they go off. Go to school on what the Steelers did yesterday. That is the blueprint. You know, You need pressure with four. Yeah, That's a blueprint. But the blueprint you might be talking about how How about getting four first round guys on the line, then Washington has that there's a blueprint Washington as that, so they might see more of it in week three. The Steelers front four are really good and Not just from four, but they got a couple of linebackers Couple and a defensive tackling Cam Heyward. And, of course, uh, The new guy, Um Melvin Ingram, So they had some guys over there and plus it was week one. Everybody's fresh and healthy. None of those guys are beat up by the season or anything. So with a bill's got a really good swing from the Patriots, and they made the paint of the Patriots Steelers. And the Steelers made it count. They made it count and they came. They walked out with a win. But you're right. The blueprint isn't just one for the Steelers. It's for the whole league. And it's the one that McDermott and Brandon Beane have tried to get here. You get quick, steady, constant pressure with just four guys rushing and you're going to be pretty hard team to score on. John on the Tweet sheet says to many holding penalties. Also, that tray white I anti was not a penalty without being said they really need to clean up the penalties. I am sensing a theme there from John Nick says the old line got dominated, and Josh was sub standard. Outside of that. There are positives to build off. The defense looked like they did in 2019 and Singletary was effective. We just need Josh and the offense to take a deep breath and reset. Against Miami. What kind of Miami team are we expecting? I know we'll get into this later in the week, but You know they were resourceful, If anything on Sunday against New England, That's not an easy place to win, even against the rookie quarterback. Well, they won that game exactly the way the Bills one last year in the Justin Zimmerman game, when Patriots are going in with a chance to win it, and they fumble it. That's why you have played every snap, not just most of them, and that's you know, it costs the Patriots to win on opening day, Max says lost to a tough, well coached team but could have easily won that game if that deep ball connects, and they get the punt off. What I don't like, is the 2/4 and ones that Josh really wanted to go for, but was forced off the field. Let's show our guys some trust. Go get that well as Steve pointed out earlier. If you were getting more conversions on third down Maybe you get the benefit of the doubt from your coach more often, right? Yeah. You earn your chance to go forward on fourth look like you can get it. And then they didn't up to that point. They were an even four for 91 of first. They weren't fourth and ones. They were fourth and threes. Yeah, so they were four of nine on third down conversions in the first half, four of nine on third down conversions in the second half. Tiffany says. The special teams miscue is the play that surprised me the most. Fortunately, we have 16 more to go. County Shack says third quarter may be a problem for us again like so many times last year, we were flat in the third quarter and, unfortunately couldn't make the comeback. That's really important. Seventy nine point seven rating. Let's talk about the steelers pass rush. I the steelers finished the game with eight quarterback hits okay. That's that's incredible and then three sacks tj wad with two cameron heyward with a third. The was almost a half a sack. Two and a half. I wasn't sure if they're going to give tj half on that one. But hayward was definitely there. I but tj helped from not getting away. Sorry if josh allen is. Let's say tom brady type. Quarterback is going to sit in the pocket or what had eight tax they have lit up the scoreboard data. Stacks Like the rolling rate the pass rush. Grade the pass rush. I should say bryan. we'll start with. You will go in the same order. I thought the pass rush was absolutely phenomenal. I have one guy that i want to. Mention is melvin ingram. The third i think he changes what they can do on that team by having a third starter in there so you mix and match and pull those guys in and out move them around. He's playing on both sides In relief he's playing early and often. He's getting to the quarterback. I thought they were great. I did not expect. I was afraid that that sack record was going to fall this week and it looked for a while that all right it very well could but then they got it going in also not just the sax how many more would had if the bills weren't holding everybody highsmith would have had a sack there. There was ingram. Would've had a sack. There were so many sack opportunities. Okay so did you. What was a great again. A all right. Dave grade to pass rush yeah. That sounds good. A sounds great. I mean how great is it to where. Tj watt comes off the field and you're not overly concerned about it because you've got two other players that are that are also getting the job done. I'm not saying they're both. Tj watt. but what i'm saying is it's not. it's not oh my goodness what a fall off that all three of them fantastic job constantly bringing the pressure they were they were held. Cardinals at Tennessee Seahawks at the Colts charges at Washington's football team jets at the Panthers Jaguars at the Texans. That is the one o'clock slate nine games for you. On this football Sunday, and we have reporters in every stadium giving you all the information as it does go down with live updates. And when you look at this one o'clock window, the three games that stand out to me the most and then almost excited about Steelers at the Bills, cardinals at the Titans and then also The Seahawks at the Colts and you look at Steelers at the bills. This is a big statement game for the Pittsburgh Steelers, because for Pittsburgh, we look at them as a team that could be a playoff team. Not a lot to make the playoffs. No Super Bowl expectations this year for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and they go up against a team in Buffalo. That is either the second or third best team in the FC and then for Buffalo. If you want people to believe in you, and I think a lot of people believe in Buffalo this upcoming season, they've done a nice job the last two years up against the Steelers. You should be able to take care of business today. But the Steelers to watch throughout this early part of the season is the way that offensive line Villanueva now with the Ravens, pouncing, now retired. How this offensive line is going to get off to a good or maybe a bad first impression and how they continue to gel throughout the season and for the Buffalo Bills. It all starts with that offense, But there are concerns about that defense and I know they drafted a lot of defense suppliers. This year, we will see at the defensive guru and Sean McDermott has Maybe a trick up his sleeve and get the bills back. To the fundamentally sound football that we did see from them to the earlier part of the Sean McDermott tenure with the Buffalo Bills, and I'll just give you a quick thought on socks at the Colts. This is all about how is Carson Wentz? Going to, even in a reduced role. Yes, he's starting quarterback going to run the football lot. How is he going to find a way to limit those turnovers as he is reunited with Frank Reich? And for cardinals at Tennessee? This is a game. That truly it could go Either way. Well, I like to tell everybody is listen to everybody. You respect And then, of course, make your own decisions at the end. So, um, I hope I'm some of your respect. Want you to gather all the good information get. I mean, obviously, you Have all sorts of access to good NFL sources with the fine work you're doing radio shows, right? Well, really helps. It helps that you know, you don't want to go into a draft, um, married to a team, but I mean, if you were Going to a fancy draft as a bills homer, you might end up with some pretty good players. Right right now. You know, Josh Allen is probably one of the three or four players who you would think is among the M V P favorites. He finished second last year. They brought everybody back off all stuff, you know. So I would think Buffalo would be one of the teams you're trying to stockpile, especially that passing game. Scott a couple things I want to get to Christian McCaffrey in a moment, ask you about him. But first, Howard got the great experience of its guillotine League. There's 18 players. He decides. You know what? I'm going to go with Austin Ekeler in the first round in 20 minutes later, a hamstring injury. My rule is I don't steer into injuries when somebody is already hurt. So, for example, Michael Thomas was somebody who I know it presumably is going to come back at some point this season, but I wasn't going to ask you let somebody else speculate on that and chew up a roster spot. Even if you had my our spot. I just I'd rather just not steer into injuries because they're going to find you as far as the ecliptic and I thought he was Easily a top 15 player, maybe even a top 10 to 12 player if people could have taken them in the first round. The new coaching staff. The charges have always had the talent. Last year, they finally got the quarterback solved. Although man they really didn't want to play him. I mean, Travis Taylor may have played just about the whole season, if not for that medical mishap, but they unveil Herbert He's straight. Finally, the end the season on the four game winning streak. It's not enough to save Anthony and the staff and they hire Brandon Daily. They hired Joe Lombardi. I'm excited about this team. I think they could have legitimate Super Bowl hopes. I think they have. You know they could win that division. Even with Kansas City in it, I don't I wouldn't expect them to win it, but they could. Podcast is about the steelers depth chart going into week one but we'll get there in just a moment real quick. Those jersey numbers that came out jamir jones changes jersey number. Two forty buddy. Johnson moved to forty five wait. I thought that was joe schubert. Yeah joe schubert moved to number ninety. Three also kello witherspoon. He chose jersey number twenty five. They also assigned jersey numbers to the other practice squad players. That weren't part of the steelers. Most notable karl joseph who was reported to possibly be moving up to the steelers fifty three man roster once he clear some protocols is number thirty. I'm not gonna get into all the others at this time. But the other thing is the pittsburgh steelers chose their captains for the twenty twenty one season. They selected ben rothlisberger on offense cameron. Heyward on defense and derek watt as the special teams captain so Missing from last year there was five captains had to on offense to and defense and special teams which was jordan dangerfield. So derek watt first time captain for the steelers in his second year rothlisberger and hayward has been seven straight years. That's as long as hayward's been captain. Rothlisberger has been captain thirteen times at eleven straight years. Two thousand ten. He was not a capital one in there. But the other offense of captain from last year was mark pouncey who retired and on defense. It was tj watched who there was some news with watt. Today he did not return to practice in any different role the what he's had throughout training camp so that kind of setting off some more panic and steelers nation I would say wednesday when the team practices and they have to give an injury report. That's going to be a real big indication with tj watt. Talk about him in a little. Bit more ear on this depth chart and we'll get more information tomorrow from head coach. Mike tomlin and his press conference scheduled for noon on tuesday. So let's get into this depth chart real quick because of some very interesting things. Let's let's start off with the offense and we'll go with the offensive line if went by the older depth chart. They only had four offensive lineman because they hadn't filled in a name for the starting right tackle. But as of right now with the new depth chart from the pittsburgh steelers. here's your starting offensive. Line right tackle. Chook sikora for moving back to the right side like he played last year. Right guard trae. Turner center kendrick green left guard. Kevin dotson left. Tackle dan moore junior. So that's the offensive line. That's the move. A lot of people expected some people were really reading into jc. Half an hour still being the first player listed on the depth chart that was simply because they had a mirror. Preseason the steelers hadn't changed it but kendrick green is. You're starting center with an hour and reserve joe. Hey is listed reserve tackle on both sides a bj fini's listed as the backup to turner on the right side at guard and left guard with kevin. Dotson the backup is listed as rashad coward Let's go ahead and jump into the wide receivers. The steelers have three wide receivers listed as starters. They have it in three different slots and that jujubes. Misuse turkey. Andre johnson and chase klay poll. The backups to those players. Are they have ray ray mcleod. He's behind smith schuster. But i don't know if that matters and they have james washington listed by the johnson. I would read into who they fall behind. That's just the order that they listed him at tight end. Here's what's interesting. Even though there was only one slot they squeeze two names into it. They have both eric. Hebron and pat fair moves listed as the starting tight end on. The first team was zach. Gentry as the reserve quarterback is what we expected. Ben rothlisberger one mason rudolph to duane haskins three derrick watts listed as the fullback and For running back is nausea harris followed by bennie. Snell junior and then kaelin balaj. That's the way the steelers have it for now. We'll see how the playing time shakes out when that ends up coming around. So there's the offense the defense here's some interesting stuff The way they have the defensive line they haven't listed as a defensive tackle at defensive in a nose. tackle it generally been hayward to it. Awhile well steph. Onto its on injured reserve so a tackle. They have cameron heyward backed up by isaiah louder milk at defensive and they have chris worm leaves the one and carlos davis the to and then at nose tackle. They have tyson allah with isaiah bugs in reserve now for outside linebacker. Trent jordan watt one. Tj watt is listed as the left outside linebacker on number one on the depth chart that has not changed we. Hopefully we'll hear more from coach tomlin about this tomorrow. If they plan on him being available for week one and then on the on the right side is alex highsmith. The reserves are the same for both they did it for both melvin ingram's listed as the reserve for both players followed by jimmy jones when looking at the inside linebackers. They have devin bush listed at the left. Joe schober the right. I'm not gonna read into left and right there but those are your two inside linebackers the next set of inside linebackers because remember the steelers have six is marcus allen and robert spelane then the third set is buddy. Johnson and ulysses gilbert the third. So that's kind of interesting especially if the steelers are going to have to make any more roster moves. You're probably looking at guys that are further down the depth chart and a lot of people feel that inside linebacker where they have six players could be somewhere where they have to make a move otherwise we'll get to that soon became cornerback. Here's what's interesting. The steelers in the past have listed slot corner or nickel or nickel corner as a starting role. They do not have that listed here. They do not have any quarterback listed in that way so all they have is left and right. Which is joe hayden on the left in camp sutton on the right on the first team. The second team is justin lane behind. Joe haden and james pierre behind cam sutton then. They're the third team has a pillow witherspoon behind justin lane. And arthur. Let behind james. Pierre no surprises it safety as its toronto edmonds. A strong safety minkah fitzpatrick is free safety. Miles killebrew's backing up crow edmonds with trae norwood backing up. Mika fitzpatrick finally to finish things off. Let's talk about the special teams. No really big surprises. When it comes to the specialists. Of course a chris boswell as the kicker presley harvard the third is the punter and holder and christian koonce as the long snapper. Ray ray mcleod is listed as both the punt returner and kick returner for the first team now. His reserves are let's go punt returner. I is deonte johnson to and then james pierre third when on kick return it goes rain. Mcleod benny snell junior as the second kick returner in jeans peers. The third It'll be interesting to see when he comes back from injured reserve. Anthony anthony mcfarland where he would fall with. It would be a head of railway mcleod behind because he was used a lot during the preseason so there is a pittsburgh steelers depth chart but they released today very interesting. It's funny because there's it's not a lot of big surprises but more a less or less there was a lot of confirmation of speculation on especially when it comes to the offensive line. So it's interesting with with these things just to see how they lay out in the in the reserves and everything else. I am pleased to see. "Pittsburgh steelers fans welcome to this breaking news. Podcast of the pittsburgh steelers fifty three man roster. The steelers had to cut down to fifty three players by four pm. On tuesday august thirty first and this is their first fifty three man roster for the two thousand twenty one. Nfl season now. The reason. I say it's the first is because it's not going to be the last honestly this roster may only last a day if there's anyone that they're wanting to get to the i. r. to have come back early or anything like that and he kind of trades and kind of ups those are still could becoming so this is just the first version and it's actually quite interesting with some of the things that the steelers chose to do so. Let's break it down real quick. There was really no surprise at the quarterback position. It was ben rothlisberger mason rudolph and wayne haskins and joshua dobbs went to the injured reserve list as part of the announcement of this which is interesting because if he's going to the into reserve less now after not being on the roster for the day. This isn't un eligible to return thing this is. He's on the i are now. They could've put. I mean the the actual statement was that he is on the reserve injured list. Now could there be an injury settlement later if he's eligible to to play things of that nature. Perhaps i'm not sure. But i'm not surprised by this because if someone someone being on the i r this allows joshua dobbs to be on the sidelines for steelers games which i think is something that they ultimately want it. But let's not go too much into that. let's talk about. Who's on this team. The steelers kept four running back and fullback they. They're running. backs are nausea harris. Benny snell junior anthony. Macfarland junior and caylin balaj. The steelers released trey edmunds and jalen. Samuels i thought it was a chance that could maybe keep trey edmunds. Because he does some different things as h back. I think he's a prime candidate for the practice squad and possibly even elevation if they would need it so i don't think his time in pittsburgh is completely over. Also the steelers kept fullback derrick. What as expected and the steelers went with the five wide receivers that a lot of people had them projected to have all the way back ever since julius misuse to return so it was juju smith schuster. James washington deonte johnson. Chase klay poll. At ray ray mcleod in no particular order. The steelers also kept three tight ends. When eric hebron pat fair youth and zach gentry. They released kevin reiter as long as he goes through. Waivers everything he's another prime candidate for the practice squad. Additionally then we get to the offensive line which is kind of crazy with what the steelers did here. I wasn't sure or this is going gonna keep rashad coward or bj finney. Rashad coward a bj. Finney didn't keep either of them. They're going with eight offensive linemen. Which is kind of crazy right now when you think about it but it's chew chor four zach banner kevin dodge and trae turner kendrick green dan moore junior joe hague and jc half an hour. So this means that the steelers did not their backup guard right. Now is half an hour so i have a feeling we might see one or both of these players back on this roster sometime soon. I wouldn't be surprised if one day later if player. I've hinted at this monday morning before. Other things even came out that we could possibly see zach banner going on injured reserve early in the season with a chance to return and you can return after three weeks. Not three not three games three weeks the way i understand it which means that earlier. He goes on the sooner he can return. But that's the offensive line. Only eight offensive lineman at this time they might be looking to add another one outside of the organization or to have one of those other ones. Come back it'll be really interesting to see how this plays out over the next several days. So that's a total of twenty four players on offense so they're one less than they normally have on offense so let's go ahead and slide on over to the defense and the question was. Oh my goodness which defensive lineman of the steelers not gonna keep. Are they going to. Are they going to keep an extra one to keep seven. If so they still gotta lose one is going to be mondo bugs auto milk. Who's it going to be so looking at it. They kept them all. They kept eight. Defensive lineman cameron heyward stefan to it. Tyson allahu chris warmly. Henry mondo isaiah bugs. Carlos davis and isaiah louder milk. All of them all of them to start off on this fifty three man roster next did outside linebackers. The only kept four. The only kept for the big. Three of tj watt. Alex smith and malcolm melvin ingram. The third and the fourth was jamir jones who played the best in the preseason. So that was one that was kind of interesting what they would do with quincy rochet. He did not make the team. I'm sure they'd love to get them on the practice squad if he can get there. But here's where. I get surprised that they that they didn't keep quincy rochet but they kept six inside linebackers. That which were devon bush. Joe show bert. Roberts spelane buddy johnson marcus. Allen and ulysses gilbert the third. I was really surprised that they would keep that many inside linebackers and so if you outside linebackers but that's just what they decided to go with. And that's that's very interesting so ten linebackers when sometimes. There's only nine eight defensive lineman when a lot of times. There's only six or seven. You already had one more guy on defense because the guy on offense but if you're counting and you're and you're saying okay. They still going to have three specialists. How many they got back. They only kept eight defensive backs four corners and four safeties. So i would not be shocked to see the steelers. Possibly looking places here where they're a little bit thin because the cornerbacks are joe. Haden cameron jean-pierre justin lane. Yes that is correct. The steelers they've released. Arthur molet who seemed to be if he was healthy. Might have been in line to be the slot. Cornerback after an injury to antoine brooks but he was released gay as well as mark gilbert and then it safety. They kept four. Which wasn't surprise. They released donovan steiner and they kept making fitzpatrick tarot edmonds miles. Killebrew and trae norwood's so that is your pittsburgh steelers defense twenty-six players at all. You gotta finish up with a specialist. These reports came out monday night and yes they were true. The only the only one returner from last season. And that is place-kicker chris. Boswell the punter is seventh round draft pick presley harbin in the third and the long snapper is christian. Coots who has been on and off the steelers practice squad or training camp you know. He was on the practice. What a little bit last year when they might have been concerned of needing a long snapper with a lot of the covert stuff he played in the xfl but had himself a very nice preseason. So the steelers switch up both their punter and long snapper so in all twenty four offense twenty sixty fence. Three specialists fifty three men. Total on this team. This roster is likely to change its likely to change within. I mean i don't know about hours. But i the steelers could go out. And they could sign a veteran that was released right now because it would not have to clear waivers. They could pick up someone in the waiver wire. They could signed somebody back tomorrow. They could put one of their players on the i r. Unsigned somebody back. There's a lot of possibilities here so we will be breaking this down. And would you agree that right now. with where jared as jarrett is at in his career that he's I mean he's definitely our best offensive lineman no question but do you feel like he is One of the top ten interior defensive lineman the nfl right now yes I know some various Video games may not agree with that. But i i would certainly say he's definitely in the conversation Right after aaron donald I think most people would put chris jones net number two and then i think you can start making a strong case for Beginning at sort of the third. Best your defensive lineman a league. I know cameron heyward From steelers has been getting a lot of that love this past year coming off season. But you know certainly in the top three to five. I think greedy definitely belongs in. That conversation indefinitely adopted yes. One hundred percent agree as you noted in a feel similarly if deemed peace can't figure out how to use a guy like that in his defense than that's a dean peace defense issue on jared issue of you know maybe in the past like you said with with defenses that were strictly three or four versus four three that would be a distinction that would matter That just is not case especially with defense is playing so much in sub packages were whether it's nickel or dime. That all goes out the window. Anyways i think what is it. A forty fifty sixty percent is in sub package. I believe they may even be higher than that. So it completely renders that conversation sort of moot. The next player on bring up because his name has been showing up a lot in this first week of training camp. A guy that last year had probably the hardest road for a rookie that you could have That was marlon davidson who was believe our second round. Pick in twenty twenty he. He came in with a lot of promise. Big body guy. And here's why last year they had the number three rated defense in points allowed and they haven't gotten worse only gotten better also look look look at the names. I'm going to name right. Tj what could have been defensive player of the year people that argued for that you look at devin bush who's a phenomenon linebacker cameron heyward probably gonna be in the hall of fame. And then you've got big. Ben and i understand the knock on. Pittsburgh is their offensive line. They were last in rushing yards lasted rushing attempts and last in yards per attempt but they also drafted the best player who was on alabama last year. Najji harris. yes i understand. He didn't win the heisman but he was the best player on that team. They went drafted him. And so they're addressing their inefficiencies. They're addressing their points of weakness and they were also eleven and last year to lead off the season. So anyone who's writing off the steelers. I think is a little bit early for that for that. Right off yeah. It was so booger what are they closer to. Are they closer to the team. That was eleven or the team that only won one more game the rest of the way after that green. This couldn't be bigger for Brown's franchise That hasn't been to the playoffs in 18 years. Do you know how hard it is to not go to the playoffs in 18 years in the National Football League? This is a league designed for everybody to get their shot with the playoffs, And yet the Browns have not been there in this long Baker Mayfield on the precipice of delivering couldn't get it done for suggests a one win team. Entering that game. They get their second win now is a pristine, gifted opportunity. Baker Mayfield if he hopes to be the future, solidifies it with this performance. "I was blocking and they came and thank goodness nothing happened. And you know we completed the past or whatever happened on the Syriza. But we went into film Study and Howard Months of when the hell are you doing after the show? That was Buffalo's 45, So that's the one thing that can get to you a little bit to me. It makes all the sense in the world to go ahead and have quit Nelson. Go ahead, go out there and play a little bit. He looked great when he had a couple of snaps. He's going to be one of its not the highest paid a lineman when his contract comes up anyway. Wouldn't that be nice to know that you can have a left tackle already on? Your team already understands everything and you could just have quit Nelson move out to the left tackle when Anthony Castonzo retires. That that would be a dream situation because I played guards. You could find guards anywhere. We're really not that hard. They're bad tackles or they're overachieving centers is that that's what a guard is basically and you can hide deficient lineman in the guard position and they don't have good. Don't get paid as much is left tackle. So to me, I would put quitting over there. I would see what he's got. It's not like Jack. The Bill's got a juggernaut of defensive lineman. The reason they didn't do it this last week was because Cameron Heyward, you know Pro Bowl defensive tackles there. You're not going to move him out that tackle and and let some backup have to go against the all pro. So that's why they left it that way. I certainly would like to see what we got. We quit Nelson there, and if it works, it works if it doesn't Yeah, Somebody's gonna have to play in the playoffs that left tackle and it's not gonna be Anthony Castonzo. So let him have a warmup game against this this team because when you get to the playoffs next week, if you can, indeed make it, there's gonna be a hell of a lot more talent than that. Last tackle's gonna have to go against And you think his skill said can translate to the tackle is well, I'm wondering why he hasn't been playing tackle all of his life, then well it because he's a sensational guard. At this point. It's what he's always played Notre Dame and he really hasn't had two plus it Notre Dame. They have McGlinchy also who's starting tackle the 1st 40 Niners. You know they had a pretty good offensive line. He just fit in perfectly and he really helped solidify push. You didn't have the need. I guess you could have made him your right tackle. But you know what? That was the brilliance of the draft in getting it. Think about this. If Chris Ballard in the first the second round drafted two guards that would both be you're starting tackles. They'll be incredible. Some of the things he's already been able to pull off. That would be pretty amazing. So now I'd like to see him do it just to see because, like I said next week You're just gonna have far far more troubles that that left tackle position and I don't know if having a you know, a travel veteran guy that's traveled around is a good idea, and I don't know how long will hold into. We still don't know how good he is. He just had a pretty decent game against the You know what? Rush linebacker Basically what he was going against the most of the game against Pittsburgh. That kid was bell that great. We won't break down the chances of the other team's losing. But do you subscribe to that theory that if you win Mm hmm. Gotta feel pretty good about your chances, right? You met Taylor was on with us on Thursday and he said he had one of those guys that does a bunch of the statistics and everything. And he said, there's a 91% chance that Not all those teams that have to be Oh, the teams are all gonna win. So yeah, I looked at the Miami is not gonna win in Buffalo. Don't think I'm not sure the weather but I know it's colder than it is in Miami.
