"It was actually like I found the clips very charming and compelling, I mean beyond the guitar minute. And he actually like sounded pretty good like, you know, it's hard to sing in a large venue with with monitors in your ears and stay on key. And all like that. And he did okay on his harmonies and stuff like that. And I think I think yeah. I mean, the the notion that we brought up I don't know last week or two weeks ago. Whatever it was is that last week that it was like if Bradley Cooper decided to try it decided to want to run he could still get this. And I don't know if that's still still true after the sag awards, but but then like immediately could still there. Right. I mean, right. Yeah. Because Rummy Rummy is there's issues with Rami starting with the fact that I think for certain discerning Sinophile types, they are going to think that that movie is not well. Assembled. And then I think something similar happens with I mean, maybe all three of the movies that we're talking about aren't aren't perfectly assembled but SARS born works officially that first hour. That's all I'm going to say. Yeah. So I mean, I have been team Bradley since I saw stars born like of all the best actor nominees. I actually would be excited like most excited to see him win. So, you know, if if he wants to like go on L, and again, and and be as charming as he can possibly be. And if that somehow gets him an Oscar, you know, at some point he's going to be like the Susan Lucci of the best actor category. Right. He's the nominated a bunch of time. So we'll we'll see or the atoms of every got a great Justice for Amy Adams some day men. All right. So is there anything else you want to talk about in terms the sag awards? No. I mean, I think that as a means of transition. I I'm going to say that, you know, we're joking about with Bradley Cooper's people listening to the podcast and and telling him, hey, you should get up on stage and do some some singing. People do listen to this. Like, I I've been now for you know, just I have a week. And like so many people have come up to me. Like, are you Richard Watson? I listen. I listen to little recognize my voice, and I'm not saying that just sort of like, I dunno brag or whatever it's just like Sundance. This is a concentration of like movie people, and you know, that we are being heard we should not take for granted. I don't think that's our target crowned. That reminds me of Cam tweeting Cameron Collins Richards, fellow critic tweeting, I don't know why people are saying no one's watching the wife. It seems to be on every screen on this plane that I'm on. And I'm like, dude, you're on a plane to Sundance. Totally. Yeah. The Sunday Express. I mean, I guess I could talk about TV. But I don't know we're so we're so far in the movie realm that I'm gonna leave the TV sag discussion for I don't know. Next time. We talk about a major TV ward, and I will instead pivot to asking Richard. What we should be talking about all ready for next year what Sundance films from last year's festival are still in the mix right now. Richard for this current award season. None really. I mean, eighth grade was kind of the big one that people thought might might be the holdout. This is the first year in five years that a Sunday has not nominee for best picture. There was some question about whether or twenty thousand with sort of, you know, corrects that that dead injustice, I guess for the civil I don't know that I've seen a best picture contender here. I wonder you know, if others might disagree. There's one big film called the stairwell that I have not seen that was a big hit and just sold to a twenty four for. I think like thirteen million dollars or something that maybe seems like because it's kind of a bittersweet family comedy with starring Aquafina and directed by Liu Wang, who's the second time director like maybe that could be one of those kind of moonshot Juno, kind of little miss sunshine best picture things. But I think otherwise this year's Sundance is more narrative about interesting performances, and maybe maybe those some of those will translate to to awards stuff in almost see your now..

"Of film that Oscar voters typically love to honor. But the film is also been mired in controversy, particularly about its historical accuracy. And what some critics are calling a feel good approach to race relations for more on the film. I'm joined now by two critics Rafer. Guzman is our film critic for Newsday and the takeaway, welcome Rafer, itin Zena and Cameron Collins is a film critic for Vanity Fair. Welcome to the show Cameron. Thank you nice to be here. So let's get started on his life topics race and movies Rafer for those who haven't seen the film. I mean a little bit about the story here the green book itself, right? Was a tool for black Americans to us to stay safe when they were traveling. There is a historical lack I think in the film. Right. So Rafer, can you sort of talk us through that? I think green book was really just a good name. I think it had a hick. It's a good title for the film, it kind of hooks you and gets you in it gives you a little bit of once. You know, what it is? It gives you a little bit of sense of history. This idea that African Americans at the time had to use this book to find out where they could and could not stay where they could get a drink where they could sleep et cetera. That's interesting, and it it evokes the time in a devotes the place pretty well. It doesn't really figure in to the story almost at all. There may be one or two scenes I think where you can see them flipping through the green book, and that's really about it Cameron. But who else is responding to this film because I keep thinking about Dr Shirley's family have they, you know, weighed in on the historical accuracy or lack thereof of the film. They have in in multiple interviews, including a great piece at Andy wire on people have been reaching out to them ever since you know, for me, it's it's it's it's not even just a matter of accuracy. I think my takeaway is that whatever the relationship was between these two men and is much more interesting than that movie. Cameron you've written about driving miss daisy, which was the nineteen ninety best picture winner. And a lot of people are comparing that to green book tell us a little bit about how Dr. Mistake was received when it came out. Well, you know, it's it's interesting because these things are so difficult to measure in part because driving miss daisy. And and do the right thing which came out the same year came out at a much different moment for the Oscars. This is something that I discovered in my reporting this just that, you know, this is pre screeners this was an era when if you wanted to see a movie you had to go to a screening if you are in the academy that the movie is not going to come to you. And when you think of in those practical terms, the sorts of choices that people make about which movies to see become more complicated, because for example, mine Prussian, and I am getting this partially from Marquette, the great film historian, and film writer is that for example, will do the right thing you have it come out at can come out of the canned film festival and already there. You have people writing pieces suggesting that it could cause riots. Right. And this is pre LA, right, right? This is this is like a before really everything came to a head. I think to answer your question more directly the response to driving miss daisy. Winning really depends on who you ask. I think among younger academy members, and certainly among the black public. It's an.

"But in this movie that specifically all writing like, really tricky racial territory to have them come out and be like, yeah, you didn't lead to pick your black protagonists as accurately as you could have if you had just asked us it's a tough spot for them yet. And I wish our own critic Cameron Collins, we're here to talk about this because he wrote something very thoughtful. I think about you know, how that's an issue that that you've got one family very much represented here in the other. The other family was not seemingly consult. And then it turned out that that Peter fairly had spoken to the actual. Dr Shirley that that Marshall Ali played, but they had never did talk to the rest of the family of the families really objecting to the characterization to the point where shadow and act wrote, you know, went and talked to a lot of family members and revealed that marshal Ali had in fact, called them to apologize had said that he had been told. There wasn't much information. You know, he didn't realize it's it's not it's not a great look for them. And I think it just underscores the notion that this is a film in the vein of a driving this daisy that, you know, appeals to kind of like mainstream white liberals because it's all about sort of. Let's all get along and learn to to be better toward each other. But that that African American audiences are just sort of tired of this narrative and not really that impressed by it, perhaps the most salient crucial point that can gets at in his piece, and that is one of the most crucial things afflicting. This movie is. Is that members of Shirley's family have said, they weren't friends. They had they had a report. Sure. But like this guy was doctor, you know, doctor Shirley's driver. He was his employees. He was his chauffeur and the movie in verts that to into such a degree that this lonely queer got black man living, you know, Carnegie Hall where where does he go at the end of the movie he goes to the Christmas at the white family's house near there. The community that he finds that is pretty insulting to what the family is saying was act was actually the truth, you know, in sort of positioning it in very white centered way. And I think that you know, I did not know the truth of it. When I saw the film in Toronto. When I said, well, you know for what it is. It's pretty well made. And I didn't I didn't do my diligence. I'm glad that that's been done now. And it's sort of good lesson for all of us. Critics like myself, especially maybe who sees things. I to be like, all right? Let's do a little bit of homework before we, you know, weigh in on these kind of supposedly based on a true story movies. Yeah. So it seems like, you know, look. Three billboards last year had some sort of similar ish problems. Although it wasn't based on a true story. It was just more that people are objecting to this kind of this theme, you see a lot which is the redemption of a white racist. And and, but you know, Sam Rockwell and France doormen one Oscars and the movie did very well. And and I think green book has a lot of you know, as can't I don't wanna speak for Campbell. We were talking about it. He's like cams like, look, there's a big constituency for this movie among Oscar voters, like, you know, I get it like it's going to do wealthy Oscars. But but these issues I think it's good that they're being aired. And that people are talking about, you know. Yeah. And it's a constant reminder that if you're making a movie based on a true story, especially if they're complicated Reshad AmEx. Involve like, you just gotta the family's gonna figure it out. They're gonna know that movie is out there. Like, it truly does feel like every single year. There is some like blemish on based on a true story movie that people come out to talk about I guess Queen ants relatives haven't been complaining about the favorite..

"Then if I ever wanted insider trading better, make sure to turn my phone on because I just don't mind been on for five years and that you could just call forever and it would never do anything. So note to self, if you ever got as somebody who has tried to call you, I can. I can vouch them, don't. Already looking at my phone and then a phone, a phone call. I forgot it could do that. I know don't spit that anyway. This weird capacity audio over. Yeah, look like a jury that the dumbest most biased the worst jury on earth is going to go. I wonder why sixty seconds after finding the company filed its drug protocol, he turned around and called his son seven times in a row until he picked up the phone. And then obviously this is seven sixteen pm. US markets are closed. Will it surprise you to learn that his son Cameron Collins dumps one point, four million shares of stock that extent over a period of days because there's an embargo on the release of the information. But over the next three days, Cameron Collins dumps one point, four million shares of stock. And and passes on the information to the rest of the family members. And you know, and it goes through and lists the extensive trading backwardness. Some of these family members only dumped a couple of hundred dollars worth of stock because that's all the out, right? They bought in, they were speculative and he was like, okay, time to get out before we lose any money. Don't take legal advice from podcast or anything, but but if you only own six hundred dollars of maybe take that long, take a success. Is it we're ask, here's a six hundred and seventy dollars that you would recover to to, you know, risk being investigated and go to prison. Yeah, if I were to ask, I mean, this is the economic calculus I would do, which is. If I were under investigation for illegal trading, how much would I pay to not be under investigation for illegal trade? And the answer is considerably higher than six hundred eighty dollars. Again, this is a thought experiment and is not intended as legal advice for any of our insider traders. So Chris Collins has been indicted under the appropriate regulations, which is seventeen. CF are two forty point ten b five. This is called a ten, be five action and he is charged with conspiracy and and and again, you know what we have is the indictment is it possible that the facts or otherwise, I suppose so. But given the way Collins has spoken about this publicly, it sure doesn't look like it and, and it looks like he is deliberately being evasive and trying to take advantage of the fact that. The that, that it can be confusing to figure out insider trading people think insider trading and they think, oh, I got tipped off. So I sold. It's not that hard to explain. Oh, I got tipped off. I couldn't sell because I was already under investigation, and my shares were restricted by the government of Australia. So I told all my friends and family to sell, it seems like an easy to make difficult yet. So keep that in mind. That's the case against Collins. You're going to see him in the news. He he looks like a scumbag and and again, you know, we would say this if this were democrat, there certainly have been Democrats have engaged in insider trading. This is not. This is a both sides do it, but but this is this is a story out there and obviously, and on that, no, gosh. What was it last week or something? I saw something where I think part of the Republicans were trying to talk about the fact that there were some, you know, maybe Bernie's campaign manager guy or some other Democrats might be swept up in this whole investigation might be I, you know, and my thought was, we'll find that's I. Doc dropped ninety two percent in what the indictment lays out the folks in my old office allege is that Chris Collins, along with some others passed along this inside information about the failed drug trial before it became public before other people could decide to sell, and he passed that information onto his son, understanding that he would trade on it in other people were contacted as well. And there are other tippy as known and overall the indictment alleges because Chris Collins passed along inside information that he had no right to pass along as an inside or at the company losses were voided to the tune of seven hundred sixty eight thousand dollars. The reason I mentioned it is not just out of pride for the work of my own office, and I congratulate them bringing this case in Chris Collins and the other defendants are innocent until proven guilty. That's our system, but it looks pretty strong as I read the indictment and the calls back and forth between. Clean, Chris Collins and his son looked devastating, and they clearly have some information from witnesses about what was said from the father to the son. So I congratulate them on their excellent good work and continuing to drain the swamp. But there's a little bit of a back story here to when I was he was there was a case call Newman in the second circuit, overturned the convictions of some people on what I thought. And most legal experts thought was a misguided ground. The injected, a new requirement in order convicts. Try to trading in that is that there had to be a benefit, a concrete financial pecuniary benefit to the person who is providing the tip so that if you just providing tip for free information to a friend or a spouse or family member, according to this, I think bad decision called Newman. You couldn't prosecute that person for insider trading. And most of the time when that kind of gift is made, there's not an expectation of cash money coming back to you. And so there was a long fight within the Justice department and in another case called Salman and based on a lot of the work that my office did in the arguments that they made the supreme court, not that long ago overruled this legal principle in the Newman case, eight zero and had that not happened from what I can see looking at this indictment, the prosecution of Chris Collins would not have been possible, so I'm gratified both the my office is continue to work very proud of them, but I'm gratified second that the work we all did together before was vindicated and bad rule that would have, I think, allowed for a lot of corrupt conduct to go unpunished, was reversed in the fruits of that reversal. We're seeing in this case today, and you know, and by the way, there's going to be a lot of commentary. And that is a Chris Collins, a Republican and the Chris Collins was one of the first. If not the first member of the house to endorse President Trump that doesn't matter. I don't care about that. My old office doesn't care about that in my time as US attorney in I imparted of this tradition continues nobody cared. If you're Republican or democrat, we investigate both. We've prosecuted more Democrats and Republicans what matters here is the rule of law and was there a violation that can be proven and it seems like they found one. Episode of stay tuned. "And that's an interesting statement from the defense attorney, because what the government is alleging in its indictment is that he was passing information non public information to his son. Cameron Collins who was also indicted and then that sun. Was passing the information to other people and they were trading on that information. Look, he was the guy who knew what was going on here. He knew that there was some negative results according to this indictment on his drug trial, and he then took that information the government says and passed it along. The other thing I think that's interesting here is that they're using in this indictment. They talk about how he tried to conceal the trading and the issue surrounding the drugstore one point in this indictment. They mentioned how his office had issued a statement to a local reporter. And the statement said, quote, neither Christopher Collins nor his daughter have sold shares prior during or after an aids, recent stock hauled, and that Cameron Collins had liquidated all his shares before the stock halt was lift after the star. After the stock hauled was lifted suffering, a substantial financial law, and the indictment says, this statement was written in a manner designed to mislead the public into evening that Cameron Collins. Had not sold any innate chairs prior to the public announcement. So sensually there's an allegation here that he was issuing public statements to mislead the public to mislead the investigators into thinking that there was no insider trader. Oops, no insider trader. Nice, uh, slip of the tongue there by Mr. bobblehead Arlette serious it up a little bit. Let's do some world news. Have you noticed this feud between Saudi Arabia and Canada? It came into my attention and if you have noticed it probably made your attention to when Saudi Arabia made this super super creepy imagery that showed a airliner flying into a Canadian tower will not into it, but like approaching like approaching the Toronto airline, the air air air Tronto air, like approaching a building, it's really hard to describe over audio. But when I saw this imagery going around on Twitter, I think I've linked in the show notes if you wanna see it yourself. It really, I caught my the. The hell are they doing? They're, they're essentially threatening the nine eleven style attack of Canada's, just mind their own business. So I wanted to search out a clip that kind of explains what's going on. Saudi Arabia has expelled Canada's ambassador and has frozen trade between the two nations. After accusing the Canadian government of their words, blatant interference in the kingdom's domestic affairs. How dare you? How dare you, Canadians challenge how we punish are evil doers, how dare you? RT's Alex Mehinovic has more from Toronto. Do you ever wonder why US politicians are totally anti Assad. They're totally anti Iranian regime, but yet they're totally cool hanging out with Saudi Arabia's leadership with this is why a diplomatic battle is raging between Canada and Saudi Arabia, and the first blows were dealt on Twitter last Thursday, Canada's minister of foreign affairs. Canada is totally in the right here. And Saudi Arabia is smacking them down like a little school yard bully for pulling this off. I just I think it's fascinating to watch this and it's not getting a ton of coverage. Not really. There's a story that is getting some coverage though, is this.

KCBS ring central Newsline and speak with politicos Carla Marinucci Carla what were, your big takeaways from this I think the big takeaway. Is when it comes to pot, Patty a price is a big deal, with consumers I mean even, in California's huge legal market the largest legal market in the world after eight months this is what. This study showed that you've got a number of consumers out there one in five she'll go. To the illegal. Market to purchase and what they are citing is. The price you know legal cannabis is. Available all over the place but it's taxed and of course California, as depending on that millions of dollars in taxes the projection last year was one hundred seventy five million dollars in taxes it. Was far less, than that because people are still going to that elicit market to buy and that was One of the findings. Of this poll today that California cannabis, consumers say they are interested in legal products. They're highly likely to go to legal then use and they see this as a wellness. Product increasingly but the price is what's? Keeping them from going to the local dispensary and going instead. To, their illicit market you'll call I don't know. If the, poll addresses but you can't help, it wonder if you can connect your couple of dots. Here one being that that price issue and the other one being the consumers perhaps. Don't perceive a, big difference between the quality what they can buy both illegally or legally I'm not sure. That's the, case adjust because in this study a lot, of the consumer. Said that you, know the nine and ten consumers so they have a, medical use for cannabis and so they they like the products they're getting. From the legal markets and the fact that they're regulated package and so forth but that that. Is the issue This is Bob Finding, a legal dispensary not all parts of California have, them readily available but then the taxes and that I think is the interesting part of the survey suggested that even a five percent decrease in the overall tax rate could boost the the legal market twenty three, percent in California which means a lot more money in. The state coffers so this may be something that legislatures wanna look at It's not in the piece I don't think the difference. Between the illegal price at the price of the illegal Pot and the legal I mean I wonder how big a gap. That, is that's a good question Patty I think it depends a lot on a venue on it on jurisdiction. Also those that varies in California and, on quality of product so, that there may be. A large variation there but, the fact is that the people at least in this survey there were seventeen hundred cannabis users, surveyed said they they do like purchasing from licensed businesses because of the labeling and. The product that they're getting and they are less far less satisfied with. What, they're getting. In the elicit market but. A lot of them are are still. Buying there because it's cheaper yeah. That's interesting all the, way, round Carlo thanks for, making some time. For us.

I believe for less than the budget of the movie, which is not never a good thing and now is coming out small release, but it stars khloe grace Marantz who is arguably a movie star. I would say this is the movie where I realized she was a movie star because she surrounded by non movie stars beyond to my mind, Jennifer Ely and I realized, oh, you're not like a normal young actor. You're like a you gotta glamour that I don't think you can quite shed, frankly. Yeah, which is maybe a problem in this movie. So she plays kind of regular teen in the early nineties who is caught fooling around with a friend of hers who's a girl and is sent by her religious aunt to a gay reparative therapy sort of camp. I guess you could. Call it, and it's about her sort of navigating those very strange waters.
