But we see it all the time. You know, privacy is not like it used to be. Now we have a camera on every corner and everybody's doorbell and in cars and all the rest of it. "This is fresh air. We're speaking with Russell Shorto, who's written several books of narrative history. His latest focuses on his grandfather, who was an organized crime boss in the industrial city of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. In the forties, fifties and sixties. The book is called small Time, a story of my family and the mob. So eventually your grandfather and his brother in law, put together this organization and expand gambling and have a big thing going in Johnstown by the end of the 19 forties. When you embarked upon the research You got your father to become a partner in this? I mean, there's this moment when you go toe, I guess the Cambria County Courthouse and get this file of the criminal filing your grandfather, grandfather, which is just huge. Um, Was it hard to get your father involved in this? The hard thing was me, not him. He had, he was turned out. He was willing. But I was reluctant initially, which is strange because he was my grandfather's eldest son, and I knew that he We have been affected by my grandfather's career more than anyone, but I just had this block because I knew You know, it's it's kind of a hard thing to get into it in a radio interview, which is why you write a book, but you know there was all this history between my father and me, and I guess I knew somehow that it was related to his relationship with his father. And because of that, it was hard for me to go there. But once I did, I said, Will you help me with this? He just said yeah, and then transformed the whole project because it was now the two of us. Undertaking toe trying to find this figure this murky figure who was my grandfather? Who? It was my namesake and my dad. You know, then took me around town. He would call up old guys so I'd never even heard of and say we're coming over and we'd sit down and you know here his whole story and his whole perspective on this, So it became this this This. You know this very some. I started out thinking I was writing history and it became something much more personal. Yeah. You talk to all these guys who were young then and are now old and you know, and nursing homes and the like. That was the story in your family about your father, who is a safaris You knew, you know, did not get involved in this organized crime in the story was that The rift between your father and his father. Your grandfather was because your dad didn't want to get into the rackets and that that was the source. Of the estrangement. You got into this and found out a different story, didn't you? Yeah. Somehow I had grown up with this story that My grandfather. The forbidding figure wanted his son to follow in his footsteps. And my father refused in as a child. I think I saw this. As you know, He's As valiant. You know, he's doing this for us. He's keeping his family protected. As I talked to more and more of the old guys, I would kind of repeated this and they looked at me like, what do you talking about? And you know, one of them said Are you kidding? Tony? My dad wanted nothing more than to get into it. So it turns out finally that I confronted my dad with us, and he admitted it And he said, And he admitted that in fact, he had desperately wanted to get into it. He would hang out at City Cigar, the center of the operation. And if his father caught him there, he would beat the crap out of him. And it's so you know, in this strange way. My grandfather. Who is this, you know, dark figure in my childhood. Ends up being kind of this hero who's trying to save his son from this life that he doesn't want him to have. And then what you learn about your dad when he's young is pretty remarkable, right? I mean, wearing suits when he's in the eighth grade because he wants to be a big shot. I mean, tell us a little bit more about What he did. My dad was the personality difference is striking. My grandfather was this quiet, shy, mumbly figure. And my dad, I think from from the get go. Was this bright, open, energetic guy and that energy. I think he just naturally. Put into Toward that business. He wanted to be part of it. He would go hang out there and he was trying to be a pool shark, and he was doing all that. But his father in his Inarticulate way knew somehow. This wasn't good for his son and didn't want him around. And so he would just, you know, beat him up on that set. You know what I kind of uncovered was This. Really, um sad, uh, inability to communicate between the two of them that that that that went through out there their lives, it colored their relationship. And it really had to do with that. I kind of think that if my grandfather had been able to say to him, look, I just want to protect you from this. That would have changed everything. But instead it is still this bitterness and my father toward his father. Um and my father then went on to become This small town entrepreneur, you know he had He had bars and he ran a disco at one point, and he was involved in real estate, and it was only late in the process of working on the book that I realized. He was trying to emulate his father. You know, he was trying to Get him to look at him and respect him on. He was doing it on their on the up and up and the in a legitimate way on his father had been doing the same thing involved in all these different businesses. But at this kind of murkier level So while your grandfather was running this gambling operation in Johnstown, and he was a big guy around town, hey, was also Had a lot of affairs. This is a complicated story, but I mean, there are two of them resulted in Illegitimate Children and given the mores of the day, you know there was no abortion was not readily available. These kids became integrated into the lives of these people in ways that was extremely painful for your grandmother. And just created just calamity. Was this stuff that you knew of growing up? Did you discover this as you did the research. Had some awareness, but I uncovered a lot as I did the research my great like, you know, my grandfather was kind of like I think he acted like a the hell. He was a medieval King or something. He did what he wanted, and he would decide. I mean, he had a, uh this woman had his child and she was actually the housekeeper who Cleaned his house and his partner's house, and he decided eventually you're not going to keep the baby, his partner and his wife. Were unable to have Children, so he decided the two men decided. They would do announced that this was their child whom they had adopted. And that's who raised the child. Hey, had another child with another woman. And this you know when I talk about having me having this Sense of darkness, which can came from my awareness of how the the older people in the family reacted to my grandfather. It's not so much about the mob per se. It's more about the fall out from his personality and his behavior. This kind of thing really kind of colored. Well, I talked to Tom Manzo, president and founder of Cambria, who placed the ad. Well, I think we need to bring more awareness that you know. California's labor laws are not that great. They're not business friendly whatsoever. That's why so many people are leaving the state. That's why so many Businesses air going under and I think we really got to be careful on the administration side of things. I mean. If they start to pass some of the laws that are in California. Federally. I mean, it could be problematic for us as a nation. And why would you want somebody in that position that allowed this type of fraud and has Had this type of behavior over the years. I don't understand it. I know if I was running a company and I lost $30 billion, I probably would get fired. I wouldn't get a promotion to go work at a big company. Mansour says the problems with Sue predate the e D. D to buck you know that's on top of the misguided labor laws like the private Attorneys General Act Pocket, which continues to open struggling businesses up too costly, often. Was lawsuits. Coronavirus: Australia sends 1,000 army personnel to Victoria to fight outbreak
"We Begin Today's program in Australia which is preparing to deploy its army to help deal with the surging corona virus cases in the state of Victoria public health workers are knocking on the doors of thousands of homes, offering free tests. You said they sort of all out attempt. It seems to be very rapid and very thorough people knocking on doors and the army being boughten. IT TURNS OUT ABOUT THIRTY THOUSAND SLABS OF QUARTZ countertop material every month well that means every day twenty to thirty trucks unload these huge white sacks full of courts I mean everything from like powdery snub to like little tiny pebbles so boat. It's GONNA thousands of shops but something about this that I was surprised by now is that Silica and silicosis and the danger of working with the stuff is not a new thing. No it's like one of the oldest known own occupational hazards so like stonecutters and stuff throughout history have been known to get lung disease and there have been regulations and guidance on the books for decades. I mean there was this movie made in the Nineteen Thirties called stopped silicosis and basically people of known for a long time that anytime you cut through rock or demolish brick or concrete you can be exposed to silica dust. A wave of sweeping the country. Southern Coast was taking its toll from the ranks of American workers clause of the disease the results of the disease. This ableman ougherty that okay. So I'm listening to this old Timey silicosis tape. It seems like this has been around for a long in time. Why are we suddenly hearing about it in the countertop industry so that's an interesting question Public Health workers believe it could be because this courts is this sort of composite stone. which has this higher silica content? You know about twice as much silica as natural granite has really taken off in the last decade and become more and more popular. Can I just say I watch. Right I mean you just control the dust and people do not get silicosis and you can find countertop businesses out there there that are doing things the right way so for example. I visited Capitol Granite near Richmond. Virginia and Paul Manager is the owner and he showed me around and we watch these big computer controlled machines cutting through slabs and as they did they were dumping up to thirty five gallons of water. A minute on the blade keep down the dust and we do not do any dry work whatsoever. that's the only way that you can eliminate any risk affiliated with With silicosis as usual so you know you look around his business and machine operators and folks doing touch shops with hand held tools. I mean they were not wearing masks or respirators and that's because is he knows the air in there is okay. He had the occupational safety and Health Administration come in and do tests but he told me. There's a lot of shops and you know outlets especially especially smaller operations that the occupational safety and Health Administration Osha never gets to and the stone. Cutting industry is basically unlicensed. It's not like plumbing or electrical or H FAC or any of the other trades. Where whereby there seems to be a standard or an international code okay so without these regulations there are people that are cutting these countertops? Don't have all this advanced equipment for their employees who just cut it kind of dry in the US gets everywhere and it's really dangerous. Exactly Lake the experience of one of the workers we heard from earlier on so he's from Washington state and he spent about four years. Cutting heading countertops. It's in charge of like all workplaces all over the country not just countertop makers now you know workers can always make complaints like inspectors will go in if workers workers make complaints but you may have noticed that it seems to be mainly affecting Hispanic or Latino workers sure and you know there's concerns that there may be language anguish differences if there's any issues with Documentation of you know immigration status. Right right. They may not want to speak up. Because you you could imagine that there are more people out there that just haven't been found that's right so you know how to get the word out and how to You know really understand. Stand the extent of the problem. Here is really uncertain right now. Is there anything that you as a consumer can do to kind of. Try to make sure that you're getting a countertop from a place that doesn't do just you know like dry cutting only I mean I think just being aware that this is a potential issue and just having it in the back of your mind as something then you can ask about like a lot of times. People are only interested in like price per square foot. Sure right these are not cheap. countertop right right you have. Choices is about who produces these things for you and it's worth asking some questions about like exactly what their processes are and how they know that they're doing it safely.
