Is Duke Done? A Season of NCAA Basketball Surprises

"Myron. I think the last time we spoke. I was at Cameron Indoor Stadium asking You what you thought about Zion Williamson. That was the last time and now Zion's gone and things haven't been as good for college basketball since he left. Myron Medcalf is a senior college basketball reporter for ESPN. Men's college basketball has been having a pretty weird season. Can you explain to us sort of the state of things and why some of the usually omnipresent contenders your dukes your? Unc's Kentucky aren't even in the top five while it's a meeting in a year like this anybody who tells you that they know exactly what's going to happen in March. They're lying because there was no one no expert. That understands kind of what's happened so far. It's just been a wild year but I think you can look at some of the things that transpired Really at the start of the season. I think the James Wiseman suspension by the answer. Aa For twelve games after being ruled ineligible. You have a Memphis team that I think had a chance to be much better if he sticks around. Lamelo ball who if he follows the traditional track and goes to a UCLA USC that changes the spotlight on those programs as well But instead you have a lot of the blue blood teams that don't have the lottery level talent that they had a year ago. Duke is still a top ten level team but they don't have anyone close To a Zaylon you'd have a team like Gonzaga that had to lottery picks last year. They got some good players. Nothing like that so the the powerhouse teams are just really good team which has closed the gap so now a San Diego State with the Malachi Flint and against double team Malachi for three huge three by malachite lend. That's a really good team. Competing for number one see the Dayton with an ob top suddenly was one of the best teams in America. And I think it's because you just don't have the same concentration of talent we're accustomed to seeing with your Kentucky's in Dukes. Then you'RE K. Use Marin what is it like covering a season like this where there are really clear favorites and no one seems to have any idea. What's going on this year? You just don't really know who to chase like. You don't know who to say okay. That's the team to watch. Because they're really good. It just feels like a pretty fragile college basketball scene which is great for the tournament for everything. We didn't have in college basketball this year in terms of no established kind of powerhouse team. I think we're going to see the benefits of it. Come into double A. Tournament. Time when we could have one of the craziest craziest. March madness is we've ever had so. Let's talk about Duke. Quit even when dukes not great? We're still going to talk about Dick. Because it's really interesting. Myron how much struggled on Saturday they lost to Virginia Virginia wins. That look the three point line. Just couldn't connect before that game. They were ranked seventh. But I imagine they could go down even further now right. Yeah I mean this is a team that I think will will fall in the rankings. Duke has run into some teams who put on their Superman capes in the last couple of games. And that's change things you have. Nc State which made sixty one percent of its threes and that loss A week ago wake forest mixed fifty four percent of its threes. These things those teams had done before they phase Duke and Virginia really as just a team on the rise So I think duke got caught in kind of a weird gauntlet there but trae Jones has been sort of their closer whereas a year ago you could go to RJ bear. You could go to Cam Reddish you could go on. And now they're a bit more one dimensional They're much closer to what you see. Maybe in a typical season where they're right there with Louisville and Florida state and Virginia and the other teams at the top of the ACC. But they don't have a guy who's GonNa carry them to the top of the League and just help them separate. That's just not enough talent in college basketball for really any team to do that. But especially in the league like the Agency. So you're in Kansas right now in Kansas. The number one team. You were there to watch them. Play Kansas State and it was a right because these two teams Fighting literally fighting back in January Shit and now the benches inc just unnecessary. That's not good. This is Paul. This is bad this is but on Saturday night myron. They shook hands before the tip off in. Kansas came away with the victory. What did you make of the number team in their performance? Well I I'm just glad nobody fought again because that that would have been bad Glad to have that moment before the game I will say. I've never been to a regular basketball game outside of the NCAA tournament that had as much security as that game. Had I mean they were everywhere about? I'm glad there was an incident. I I think Kansas is sort of the perfect team in a year like this. Do they have a lottery pick? No but they've got this really balanced group of guys who are pretty good offensively. They've been pretty efficient team and they got two guys who win they're together. They're hard to stop. It's Dotson In Gaza Buki who when they're on the floor together. Kansas made about sixty percent of his shots inside the art. Their opponents have made about forty one percent of their shots inside the three point line. That's the story right there when those two guys are together. Kansas is certainly the best team in America. But you also look at them and go. Are they one bad night from Abu? Koa from struggling. He was hurt part of the game on Saturday against the bad Kansas state team boss feeds it in bounced past as a group. Six to shoot you back down spits travels this is the shot ultimately but he rolled his ankle. Oh this is good has approved. He is clutching his right foot so Kansas is good. But like a lot of teams there. One bad moment badge stretch away from being right there with everybody else. Well now. It seems like Kansas is going to run away with the big twelve after Baylor who was ranked number two going into the weekend got upset by. Tcu How bad was this for Baylor? It's always interesting right. Like Baylor won every game but one for like two months straight and now all of a sudden last week I think a lot of people are panicking and that happens to a team. Like Baylor which doesn't have the brand recognition of Duke or Kentucky or a Kansas. So in hard times. I think we may be overemphasized Some of their struggles. I think you obviously don't want to continue losing and losing to a team like Tcu is not good For them but this is a team that again played a tissue team that did things that they haven't done in the past made forty five percent of the threes on Saturday against Baylor. They made thirty three percent of their shots from three point. Line before that so that can be more of an anomaly. I think Baylor overall though is one of the best defensive teams in America made the best defensive team not named Kansas. So that's GONNA keep them in every game that they play well one team. That's right up there with Kansas and Baylor is Gonzaga perennial contenders They did lose to. Byu about a week ago but they're still considered favorites to win the WCTC. How good is this Gonzaga team? I think they're really really good me now like I think they're amazing. I just think this is a year where because everyone has been sort of even you get one loss and all of a sudden. Gonzaga gets the whole. You haven't played anybody. And why are you losing you know in the West Coast Conference and I think that's unfair? Byu was a really good team like Byu's go into selection Sunday with maybe a five or six seed. Maybe even better so. There's nothing wrong with losing a road game in that environment to a good team. They have the number one offense in America a flea Petra. Sav is one of the best young players Indian tire country. We would know what mark few the head coach can do. And they've got two losses all year. I think that is one of the best teams in America and I think will prove it wants double a. Tournament starts so most of the rankings have some combination of Kansas Baylor in Gonzaga in the top. Three we'll see how this weekend changes that but after that myron gets pretty interesting. I'm you've got Dayton San Diego state. Did you see that coming up before the season began out like I wish I could lie and say I did? I wish I could be that dude. It was like yeah. I called San Diego State back in October in Dayton. But I didn't I mean like ob top and a Dayton is suddenly this lottery pig. And I don't think anybody saw that Common Dayton on Friday against Davidson Mia. Think about this number. They may ninety six percent of their shots inside the three point. Line Ninety six percent like I don't care if you're playing a high school junior Varsity Team. That's really difficult to do in Dayton. Did that and not only did they do it. They've been doing it Throughout the season just really inefficient offensive team in San Diego State. A team that lost its first game about a week and a half ago. The they've been role as well in their line of people who will say San Diego State doesn't play the competition that the other top teams have faced in college basketball. That's not true. They beat the. Byu Team that just beacons Aga- they beat Creighton. Which I think is the surprise of college basketball naked win at all by thirty one points and they beat Iowa another solid team another Aa tournament team by ten points so the best teams that were thrown at San Diego State. They won those games now. They did lose the UNLV Week ago but beyond that there have been a really really good team and I think in a year like this again. You're not going to run into a team with two lottery. Picks it feels like they can make Iran as well both San Diego state ending

NBA 2020 Predictions

"About My tween twenty bold predictions now. This isn't just for the regular season. This is for the off season. This is the beginning of next season to these addiction that I think that potentially could happen. I'm going to say them here today. And maybe you can agree with me some. You may think this crazy in some you might agree with. We'll have to see my first pro. Prediction is that both L. A.. Neither one of the LA teams will not make the Western Conference finals. I think a team will beat them or since the clippers. Don't take care too much about seeding in the Lakers. Stay the number one seed if the clippers land four or five. They'll play the clippers in the second row. They'll play Lakers around. which would men? 'cause obviously semifinals matchup US and other Western Conference finals match. But I also feel like there may be a team that could upset me maybe Houston is probably the most likely that could upset one of the LA teams and. I think that they're going to keep them from making the the the Western Conference finals. I know a lot of people were expecting that to happen. A lot of people are wanting to happen. I'm sure it will be great for the Lee but I really think that that's something in my opinion that I think is going to happen. That's one of my first. Bold predictions of the twenty twenty season in further on my eh prediction is that the Golden State Warriors will form another super team. Now I don't know if there's going to be with Jaanus. It could be a cry towns because Golden State is monitoring situation but Golden State clearly knows. Listen with the way the League is if we want to be on topic how can we need to get an update US another super team together and I think that they're definitely trying very hard to get another another star player in there now. I do like that. Probably means that's the end of Draymond Green. But I think that's what they're aiming for taming to get their aiming to get another star in there to see to come back with clay and to come back with Steph potentially really they can make you trade for star because they if they do get a top three lottery pig. deathly do not be surprised. If they try to make a trade with that pick honestly they honestly could have just picked up an amazing asset for them because they could use that as trade bait in. That's good trait rate. You know maybe the team star is disgruntled. Maybe you never know. I mean this isn't somebody would think about like the sons have another bad year. We'll we'll give you our top pick and another guy. And we want Devon Booker. Obviously Yona how that work I mean you know. They're kind of doing the right now. And the end of the Russell even yeah no. We Really Devon Booker may be a better player Neanderthal Russell. But that's definitely a prediction I think could potentially happen. I think that the warriors warriors will form another super team. But it's not going to be as top heavy instrument of Kevin Durant who like the second best player in the League. That's why think if they got Jaanus it would be stacked because of state Stephan Klay can play like they play and then they completely put a better supporting cast around. Then you could say okay. Yeah this team is going to be very tough to beat. Even laker teams have a team. They may be looking up to but it will have to see because if they get any towns houses. This is a great player but we don't view him as view when Kevin Durant was there which means even though it would be very top heavy west conference. But that's when also and my pro predictions one of my other pro predictions. Are I think that revenue from the C.. BA will increase which will lead to more players undeserving of big major contracts. Getting big major contracts. I'm going to say any names. But it's like okay. Well I'll say this because I don't know if he's GonNa get it but there are people who are sometimes wonder now dre walgreens supposed to be a free agent this offseason offseason Draymond Green. We know he's not a guy who's going to score points we can do live. And he's a great gadget player. I would say but some people wonder. Would somebody pay draymond green the Max would they give draymond green that Max deal. That is something they definitely wonder about and like a question. Like why would you give you Max. If if there's more money to be spent draymond green could potentially ask for Max and if you like laundry a month you might give them close to it. I mean we already have players now. who try to sign that? First Max deal then take a shorter deal. Just didn't end up getting of that. Ten Year supermax dill. But you know it's one of those those things where I think that this will lead to more players being signed overpaid and I mean you obviously can see more cat room. It can lead the teams being in very weird financial situations with cap every team six Performing up to expectation and then you played a lot of guys a lot of money who may have never actually deserve the money in the first place so. I think that that's going to be something that's going to be interesting another addiction I have is. I think that James Harden will make it to the NBA Finals Cheer. I know that's pretty big. That basically means you're saying he's GonNa beat one or both La Teams. I think James Harden. This would be the best year for him to do it. I think right now this I flew. This is his best year do it. So I'M GONNA go ahead mcnabb. Oh predicts names hard. It's GonNa make the finals. These the rockets are GonNa make the finals. This may be shocking to you. But that's how I feel. I feel like that. Jr potentially do it. I feel like if he was able to average at least thirty in the playoffs and Russell could give him about twenty twenty three. That's fifty three between the two players and they have some good supporting cast. You can't forget about. PJ Tucker can't forget about Erik. Gordon Clink Appel. You definitely feel like they have all the potential attention in the world so potentially be a top team and so I would not be surprised if they end up being the top team they think they can be and making it to the NBA NBA finals. This year in basically just creating just such a great agree moment for the city Houston also another prediction. I think Diane if he comes back as soon as they say he come back. We'll still win rookie of the year. I think Zaylon has all the talents. Be A star of Zion. Comes back in balls out in just twenty points a game in gives you a lot of highlight plays. I think he will be able to squeeze out winning rookie year only only playing half of the year again. That's a pretty bold prediction but as I've anybody can do a Zairean can all takes his cause. Remember even the Luca one owned by a lot last year. You trae young exciting second half which made it interesting and don't be. We don't feel like John Moran is doing with Luca Danni last year so it's not as far fetched is not as it's not like oh it's completely impossible for Luca played so well and then trae young play well in the New Year but he's still play. Okay well it's like John Mirant is playing. Maybe the best right now. But he's not playing at local level from last year so of Zion can have maybe a trae young like surge in the second half of the season. I think he'll go ahead and win the rookie year. But it all depends on when he gets back. 'cause I do if he didn't get back to maybe mid February with that he wouldn't. It's only two months left in the season. At that point. He has to probably get back to move in the next two weeks and then just start going on a tear from game one because dial is full practice recently so he's clearly about to get there. Obviously you've seen him take jumpers you've seen him dunk Donc so I definitely things I on can win the rookie year if he gets back in time and my last bowl prediction is that the Atlanta Hawks will add a star player. This off season. I don't know who but I feel. They're gonNA add some but I feel like some of the issues they've had I flipped. They're going to add a star. Because I feel like you need to especially to make trae WANNA stay there because rotations rumblings that he might and I wanna stay. That may be something that you may want to do. If Your Hawks Front office you need to add some talent in their yep some good young talent but you're going to you know how it is as league view in a win you're gonNA have to give up that good young talent for solidified star. Obviously I feel like trays untouchable. But maybe Kevin Heard. Or maybe you D Andre One hundred maybe a cam reddish maybe push them shelby John Collins and I think they're gonNA make a trade for a proven star in this league and we'll have to see whoever that star is how far the Atlanta Hawks may potentially get because of it but that's it for me thank you for listening listening to the GMC football basketball podcast on the GMC podcast network. If you please remember to subscribe was that really helps us and also ride review and also Father Wilson's social media instagram twitter and

"The know what to do with anything like that but knocking seven million off you know you never really know what what will be on the table there and i think that's negative value and i it's more that not necessarily that to thirteen say terrible contract perjury parker i don't particularly like the fit and when you have a player with that kind of money on roster you generally think of them as a component an i would have liked to see just to have seen somebody who brought something different to the table you know maybe like a bouncy defensive for or i are a center some something else and i don't love this use of capital for them yeah i agree with you they don't really have a at this point in time a long term center on the roster jabbari is somewhat similar to cam reddish de'andre hunter as well john collins is the power for jabbar i can't defend the he'll fit right in with his group but maybe guys like like hanser will be able to get there eventually but this is gonna be very defensive john's seem to remember they also traded for evan turner who supposedly is gonna be in the rotation i mean i do think they need some more creation on this team really like who is your best near second best on ball creator might be cam reddish as they as a rookie and i do think there might be a bit of a by low aspect here to jabbari but you know having giving up the player option as well is not great either by the way bark borrow seem just continues to win i mean where where else this offer was variety i've no idea it's it's almost like ideas and it doesn't seem to fit in with what travis like would be doing now lana has a ton of cap space for next summer the seventy million jabbari has the pickup that player option at south end of the world but yeah it really just he does not make a ton of sense someone who still views himself as a starter he's not going to start here i mean that's pretty obvious i mean maybe i guess he in collins could start together if punter reddish are ready but they do have a lot of guys the feeling wrote down drew brees throwing the theme turner you could say jabbari you know last year is coming off the tornado c l and now he's gonna be honored percent then they'll shoot better from three am just doesn't really seem like this would make what's the end is continues the travis pattern where i overall really agree with what he's doing but there are a fair number of movies that he'll make you know maybe twenty percent of 'em where i'm like kind of a head scratcher like the linden trade or a that trade that they made the move up to number four per hunter who got any or if he works out they'll that'll make sense but they give give up an awful lot to move up to number four for a guy that we thought was caught in the same here's the guy they could get eight there the hawks also did you trade with the warriors acquiring damian jones making about two point three million sending out last year's number three overall pick a trade up to number three overall pick centers for one another omari spelman going back hawks taking on another four hundred thousand or so in getting eight twenty twenty six four years second round pick for the trouble wears a definitely giving up the picks.

Every Team's Top Potential Free-Agent Targets After 2019 NBA Draft

"You about to be immersed in woke bombs, because it is that time of the year. Our NBA insider, everyone else joins us. Whoa. Just before we get into free agency, which is going to be interesting. We are now what twelve hours removed from the draft. Your initial takes who won who lost? Well, I thought the two teams who made the most significant trade last night. New Orleans, and Atlanta, both fared very well maximize the assets that they had Atlanta moving up into number four. To get. The hunter from Virginia. Maybe most versatile forward in this draft the best defensive player player doesn't need the ball in his hands. They've got a lot of scoring on Atlanta team. And then Cam, reddish, who is probably a top three or four talent taking a little bit of a flyer on him at ten and then New Orleans, you know, their ability to keep expanding this Anthony Davis trade. They got Jackson Hayes at center beyond Ziya Williamson David Griffin, thanks, that's going to give them in the long term. Maybe the most athletic front court in the league pick up another first round pick. And now also have nearly thirty million dollars in salary cap space to go out and free agency. And some veterans to this team that could make it conceivable that, that the pelicans could make the playoffs in their first year without Anthony Davis. And usually when you trade a player of that, caliber. From a small market, you're going into a full rebuild. But I think the winning the lottery being able to get Zion Williamson has a lot of David Griffin to go and just the opposite direction. And they're set up really well in New Orleans, talking about teams on the way up in there seems kind of scratching our heads about that would be the Celtics. What what's going on there? Well, listen, they're preparing to lose career being Al Horford in free agency. They've got in the neighborhood of twenty six twenty seven twenty eight million dollars in cap space, they could use that to go after Senator to replace Al Horford. Nicola Busa vich in Orlando's a free agent. The Lakers have interest there if they can get the cap space for him if they want to put all in one player, but which is at priority in Orlando. You know, there's I think there's motivation on both sides to get a deal done. But if they weren't able to, you know, Boston's and position to swoop in there and try to make a deal with vich Boston still has some really good young players. Now they go from team that thought they were ready to compete for championships to a team now built around Jason Tatum. Jalen Brown Gordon Hayward who still on the right side of thirty years old, and who probably will have a much better season this year than last. But they've got to address that point guard position in Boston. They obviously have taken a step back if both of those players are gone free agency and that's and that's how they feel. That's how it appears right now talking to Adrian ward NASCAR ESPN NBA insider on the show Pennzoil performance line. And something we had Brian win horse on earlier. We're talking a little bit about as teams you mentioned move things around or creating cap space right now. The idea that the seventy Sixers with some available cap space could potentially take shot or try and get a meeting with Kawhi Leonard coming up in free agency. Tell us what you think about the viability of that. Oh, I think they'll get a meeting. I mean listen getting a meeting and being a serious contender for free agent are two different things and very often the relationships in place that will allow a team to get a meeting I thought all along Philadelphia would probably get a meeting for Leonard. I think the Knicks will also get a meeting with Leonard, but the front runners are still Toronto and the clippers. But. Players and their representatives will meet often sometimes as a courtesy with other teams but their focus in Philadelphia is keeping their own. And that's Jimmy Butler Tobias Harris and JJ Rettig. He's an important part of that group too, and he's coming off an outstanding season. It's going to be expensive to keep that team together. They knew that when they made the trades for Harris and for Butler, but their priorities to keep them and also find a way to keep there. You know, I think they may get a meeting with Leonard, but I don't think they're going to be a physician to sign them or insider, eighty ask is with us right now. Whoa. What, what are we hearing? The latest on the, the possibility that there might be a sign and trade deal that keeps Kevin Durant in Golden State, while he's rehabbing. So he gets his money, and then they'll be able to get something for money moves on trade. I don't know anything about that. I think the focus and Golden State right now is to try to sign Kevin Durant to keep Kevin Durant in with the warriors. They're going to offer him a five-year max contract, just as they were before the Killys injury. You know all the options that were there for Kevin Durant before that injury are still there. All the teams that were recruiting him that we're willing to essentially offer them the full scholarship, nobody's pulling back on the book or the meal plan, he's getting full scholarship from everybody. Maximum. Allowable for years with another team five years with the warriors, and they're determined to try to keep him keep Klay Thompson. Great analogy, by the way. As far as actual galleys of free agent when you can actually talk and deal with players. Forgetting that how much of the race is going on right now in the timing issues of these teams talking back door to try and get these things done. Now I mean we live in the real world, Mike and free agency started weeks ago just did. And so it's ongoing. You cannot keep people from talking, there are different philosophies out there. There are different styles going at it. I'm not saying every team is out every free agent is out, literally to go shitting numbers. But are there, some yes there are, and that's always been the case? But I think because of how many teams have so much you have over ten I think ten eleven teams with over twenty million dollars in space and teams who could go get it with one trade. Or waving a player who's got a partial guarantee. So there's lots of moving parts in this free agency teams don't want to be left behind. but you could also you can talk to your own player all the way through boston was able to talk about extension with al horford and it didn't look like they were not close on the numbers and that's why horford is headed in the free agency he feels they have some confidence there's a much bigger offer or offers out there for

Kevin Durant Kawhi Leonard Boston Al Horford New Orleans Ziya Williamson David Griffin NBA Atlanta Anthony Davis Philadelphia Orlando Virginia Jimmy Butler Tobias Harris Jalen Brown Gordon Hayward Golden State Lakers Zion Williamson Klay Thompson Pennzoil

"Game. How many shots did the average without those two in the floor, five twenty six thirty thirty shots at game without? To because without. K D. Thirty shots. Here's what's insane about Steph curry. He wants average twenty shots game was the unanimous MVP points a game if anywhere near thirty shots again, this is what's insane about him as his usage rate goes up his percentages. Don't change. There are so few players throughout history like that. You can say that, about James harden, too, but hardens not as a fishing steps, not. That's not true about him without K D, without maybe the both of them in those two gills doesn't change it like his shooting percent. He shoots forty four percent from three without Steph, this, you forty four percent from three ninety two percent from the line. Whatever is feel. Didi said they say going into the post going into the finals without K D And clay day said that his numbers dipped his volume both him and clays volume went up, but they're percentages, when I looked at this last year, and the last time I looked deep into the numbers with when I was making the case on countdown that Steph not hardened should be MVP at that point. Steph is the engine that makes that team go. He's still has. His pick and roll partner. They'll have someone else who can shoot the three but he is going to LeBron ain't gonna split up numbers all the split up numbers. Steph is going to average. Listen to me right now. Well over thirty points the yet the ball stick with him. He's an underrated rebounder. I mean he's gonna put up cartoon numbers next year on a winning team a playoff team. He's going to be the MVP disagree with you. And here's why disagree which max, I don't think Golden State is gonna be successful for him to get in the I think that they're going to squeeze into the postseason without clay and K D there because I think Steph is gifted enough to carry them that far. And I think that that's about the size of it. I don't think this is going to be a Russell Westbrook situation where you find yourself bounced out in the first round but you still win league MVP on us because you average, a triple double. I don't think we're gonna see that again. I think what you're going to see is Steph curry numbers, wise, warranting strong consideration. But the success of the Golden State Warriors getting in his way. And as a result, I think it's going to go to somebody else. I the Greek freak will be in the picture. Okay. But I think LeBron James is going to be in position to win the league MVP and let me be very clear about this. Lebron James it don't matter who he's playing with religiously averages twenty seventy year twenty seven per season..

"Forget during his senior season. I watched him score fifty three points in a game. And I left the game thinking he was the number one prospect in the class. And then the next time I saw him he didn't score in double figures. And that's kind of that's the story right there with came and reddish. He is as talented as anyone in this draft. But he is so up and down. And that's really how he's always been. You can see him on one day and he's a world beater in the next day he blends in. So I think that's the biggest thing for me with Cam, reddish, the consistency in the lack of killer instinct, and will he ever develop that so he's obviously a tremendous prospect. And I think he's a guy that. Probably prefers to not be the man on a team. Yeah. So I think peering him with an MBA all star, obviously be be be a good start. I think he's fine being the second or third best player on the team and blend in because I think the upside with Cam reddish is Paul George type player. Yeah. Can't he reach that ceiling? I don't know. He obviously has a tremendous ceiling, but can't reach. It is the biggest question. Yeah. You know in watching a lot of his games do this year. You're playing with two of the top prospects in the class. You think you'd get more open? Looks one thing I noticed a lot about when Cameron should be shooting is that a lot of his shots, almost he has that, that Carmelo shot range where he thinks any shot. He takes his gonna go in whether it's his feet are planted. His his shoulders aren't square. He's just he's launching. That's, that's me and pick up just out here launching. But watching watching his game you're right. The inconsistency really does show when it seems like when he's knocking down the deep ball. And when he makes him when he sees the ball through the hoop on the offensive end. He turns it on. And it's like it's like once he starts getting offense of game going, then he's completely engaged of what's happening inside the game. But if it's shot is falling, you can see some really bad stat lines like a one for nine a one for ten from three and for sure just like you mentioned before, when you play the prospects like this, I, I was expecting to see him have a better season shooting the ball, because I thought he'd get more open shots. But a lot of the shots, he was taking the also very deep. He loves the deep ball. He pulls up for a lot. And I think you're right. He has tremendous upside, and it's very surprising. The actually compared him to Paul George because I've yet to hear you compare anyone like that. So I'll put out on the big board. Evan Daniel first time comparing player to someone else. Ceiling was. Hey, compares. Before let's be in trouble. Hey man, I understand it moving onto the next kid. We got the kid from Texas Tech big time software. Big twelve player of the year..

"It is the great Dionne Thomas, and he joins me John hood, here on ESPN one thousand and the SP, nap is always, we appreciate you coming on. Hey, don. Thanks for having me, man. It's a pleasure. Absolutely. The bulls will be picking at number seven in the draft as you. Well know I, I wanna get your your keen insight on some of these young players that maybe picked high in the draft, giving the example of one guy is on the six five combo guard from North Carolina Kobe white, when you when you saw him what did you what stood out most about Kobe white? Well, it's really is for me at the watching North Carolina play a lot this year. It how he willingness to take over the game. I mean, the kids showed no fear. I mean, and then you take that with his is at six five because he's definitely legit point guard, but he has a he's a jig point guard that can put the ball in the back. I think what he does will transfer mmediately to the NBA, the call the visibility shoot the ball in his ability to put the ball. But he's also shown that inner toughness that, I think you need as a rookie to be able to come in and be a another player that was on a big stage in the NCAA tournament was Jerry Culver from Texas Tech Asaf more. I've seen a lot of comparisons with him, Jerry Culver, I think that he's gonna make himself a nice living in the NBA, especially being able to carry Texas Tech to that level. No doubt, no doubt that I'll tell you. It's funny. You say that we will my wife and I were watching and Reggie Miller. And no knock on Reggie Miller. You know, ready made the comment and nobody has ever heard of this their covert? I'm like, this is this is why you have MTA guys college analysts talk about this, because I'm reading this is about the be a lottery. You know, because it's like you said, I mean he has a very quiet way about him, but he has an ability to do basically everything on the floor. But yet, he has not reached his his pitcher yet. I mean he will improve his jump shot. He will improve his ball, handling coming in at about six six six seven about two hundred pounds. So he's already physically ready for the game. And each still maturity, like you said, when Texas Tech was down. He he stood up and he put himself above the other guys on the floor while trying to pay help him play with his teammates. He were they would step up on the stage was able to come out and show what he can do enough, what you looking for when you have a player that's gonna be drafted high is the great time with me Jonathan hood on ESPN one thousand in the espionage, I saw this comparison, you might laugh comparison. I have all this draft information. In front of me, so jerk Culver is compared for some to Nick Anderson. You know what? I'm not gonna laugh at you because I could see that I can see why people would make that comparison I think make is a lot better athlete though. But you're covert, not a bad athlete, and by no stretch of the means. But you can look at their body. You can look at the mood miss in the way they played the game. I mean, I think Nick may be a little bit more college at the time, but I can see that comparison I wasn't that I kind of like that idea. Yeah. I've been reading a lot of these these different draft capsules, and that's it's an interesting parallel another player to coaches is Cam reddish. The six eight four from Duke projected to be a top ten pick, so maybe in the top eight could be around for the bulls eye. You know, I'll tell you I didn't see enough of Cam reddish to really have one strong opinion on what he is going to be this is one of those things where you wish you would be a sophomore have two years to for me to have a complete. Look at what he could be what, what are your thoughts on camera show, the next level I agree with you one hundred percent. I think Cam reddish has an opportunity to be top notch player in the late. But I didn't see it, you know, he was playing on the team with diet, and that, of course would RJ Barrett. And so he took it back seat to those guys. And when he needed to play well, there were times he play well, but there were times when they needed him to play well, that he wasn't fair. I don't think from a mental standpoint or a maturity standpoint he's there right now. But the way thing to working now in the NBA like you said, he'll be top ten pick without really cool thing himself in my opinion to be that top that pic, but that's just the way things work nowadays. So of course, he has to come out, but I would have loved to have been able to see him with another year. Under coach K do, but we're not gonna get that isn't going to be an NBA. I think he has a great Sanson, especially the come in, and learn behind someone that, you know, has a little bit of time. And with him possibly go to Chicago going to Atlanta, he may not have that opportunity. But if he was the end up falling to Washington or falling to even the Miami or somewhere like that, what he would have the mold of players on that team on the evening. Great if he could go to LA, but that's not gonna happen to be able to learn behi- someone what it really takes the being the league. I think it would be a lot better off. But I still think he has a tremendous upside. I just would've liked to see more maturity at the collegiate level all the numbers of their coach seven wingspan, and eight eight nine reach our and watching him. There's no doubt. Explosive athlete. Great first step. He's got all those things. Just the, the idea that we've had would never see him without Zion being there. Because that would have been the true sign of you got it can lead a ball club. You know, some of his intangibles, but, you know, we're gonna see what he looks like on the next level. I agree. It'd be interesting to see because he that. And that's why I mentioned those two guys. I mean you have you had our debate you can't and you had Williams and he naturally, you know, because I think of personality failed behind those guys and really a lot of the time for law because Diane was such aid, you know, big star superstar, just when he was dunk, and all of the things he just attracted so much attention. And then, of course, are bear was missed the consistency. So he's putting up twenty twenty five points, garlic who's on the floor. But that's the toughness that I'm talking about it would've been easy for RJ bear to say okay, well, you know what? This is I since he he's like, no, this is my team to. And that's the thing that I missed seeing with Cam radish that I hope he will be able to develop at that maybe, maybe not as I should, but definitely develop as he goes through his NBA career Thomas Jonathan hood on. On under the hood on ESPN one thousand and the SPN app. There's a story from a few days ago coach about John Mirant underwent surgery to remove loose bodies from his right knee on Monday is that is just nothing. Or do you think that maybe that could affect his draft status because everything has him going at number two after Zayn Williamson? You know, it's just a little clean of that. That's, that's definitely nothing that's going to bother him. And as you know, the NBA is going to be on that Bill cowed. The doctors will be able to really take a look at that as we saw him playing during this year. You know, didn't show each of no affects from his freshman year. No say this year is off more. I don't think that's anything that's gonna bother him whatsoever on on June twentieth. Yeah. June twentieth when they come out of the draft. Got a little barbershop conversation with you. Okay. So you got to come to the barber shop would be with this, this conversation. Love it. Let's do it. They okay so Zayn Williamson if he stays the pelicans, and again, every all signs, are that he will be drafted to the New Orleans pelicans, number one, what kind of one two punch? Would it be Zion is agrees to stay with the pelicans and Anthony Davis agrees to stay with the pelicans? Well, I, I guess they would. I, I look at it team you know, for my years of coaching building team, what you really need. My, my pain point guard has to be solid your two or three guy have to be solid, and then your four or five so you have to have those three positions. I believe that are that are solid. Where do you play Zion? We that's the question. Or is he a guy that's like a Charles Barkley that you just put out on the floor and he goes out place now? I think that's kind of where he'll fall in, but the, the difficulty of those two playing together it neither one of them is a great jump shot shooter. So now you're gonna have your defense is gonna be I mean, the other team will retry their defense that make you an offense of jump shot shooting team. And that's going slow them down. I would love to see them play together because I think with Anthony Davis skill level and his ability to. Move about ball. Get it where it needs to go. And as we seems I Williamson with do. Excuse me, this kid has no problem. Creating and making his teammates better around him. So I think they could play together. Now will they will be another question because I think Dave is now at this point in his career wants to win championships, a wants to have the possibility of winning championships, and he's not gonna do that in New Orleans for a while. Lastly, coach, I, I said this earlier on the show, and I still believe, in it, it is funny, the perception of the Golden State Warriors. We already know that they're champions. But here's my take on it is it is interesting how people will just say, well, you know, the Golden State Warriors shoot threes because they got Steph curry and Klay Thompson. If you really look inside the game of the Golden State Warriors out of all sixteen playoff teams. I think they were eighth or ninth as far as three point shooting percent is not about threes. You saw an entertainment parts with Biggs being involved with cousins and to be able to see what they were able to do. I thought that it showed a lot of resolve for them to have so many injuries. And then Knicks man up that is the embodiment of next man up mentality for them the win game two against Toronto the other night. Well, I agree with you and. Stacey but not this one in particular era of Golden State has broadened style the change in basketball. I mean, the whole idea of the position list style of basketball. Like you said, you had five interchangeable spot, your four men who in mind dream part of the time bringing the ball up and transition, you had the markets cousin bringing the ball up and transition, the other day. So they look like some people might laugh at, but they looked like a better European style basketball team. You don't have to spend fourteen years over there..

"And if you're that close, and you're the one paying de'andre eight and ten grand a month. That's what surprises me the most not that he got paid ten grand a month that Shawn Miller is that close to the situation because that would be one of those where I would tell Seton to tell paulie to tell fritzy to tell mclovin to tell to it as to tell Morio to get something done. I don't want it anywhere near me. I need six degrees of separation here. And that's why you have this testimony that's been explosive. And I'm not surprised if you said that Zairean Williamson got paid his family got paid for him to go to Duke. I would not be surprised would not be surprised at at any of this anymore. Now, it's not an accusation. But if he had if he had a price for. Kansas which has been reported had a price at Kansas. Did he just then say or somebody say get what he's going to Duke forget about this? He doesn't want anything for his family or his family's not asking for anything. I just apply logic to this. I I assume Nike was paying somebody who paid somebody. And he ended up going to do. Now that might not be a reflection at all and coach K. RJ barrett. Cam reddish. No. And a foul Michigan state as you mentioned coach Thompson, they're being very aggressive make or miss this team will run the first seconds down on the floor of tissue. Transition defense thing that I love about him is that at the end of the running if it's not bad. They don't take shot. Quaid to the line. The foul on Alex O'Connell, go. Traded on the year at eighty five percent shoot return to get a basketball foul at the end of the thing that I love about. Michigan state is afraid to pull out run the offering gotta be careful for Carolina push. You hear this crowd roaring all the Duke fans rose as worn as Cam reddish has checked into the game for Alex O'Connell mcquaid missing the free throw reddish who did not play on Friday with a knee injury back out there. "There are part of college sports, and especially this term in the last few games are so we get into this precarious position where it's taboo to talk about letting down your team not playing some big time injuries. And whenever injuries affect college teams the way they have over the last couple of nights. They obviously are happening two players that have an impact on the game. Whether it be PJ Washington that we've talked about we talked about the the Toco KiKi kid from Auburn who as a gruesome looking no contact contact knee injury that he went down with North Carolina game. He's the best player on the floor for the majority of the game. You hate to see a kid go out like that Cam reddish shortly before the Duke game was ruled out with a knee injury. So we we start to muddle around in our heads and start to ask ourselves. What are you risking? Are. You are you are you a bad teammate for not playing. If you are throwing up the chance that you are maybe hampering yourself or or hurting your draft stock PJ Washington with his foot injury was Allie Laforce after the game asked him how he felt and he said, I'm sure it's going to hurt tomorrow feel anything right now because of the wind, and you're just you're listening to a nineteen to twenty two year old talk like that, man. There's a lot of money at stake. But also, the the the school pride and plan with you, boys. Pat, you've been in this situation before when you see injuries impacting the term at the way, they have especially over the last couple of days, what what comes to mind in terms of the decisions that these kids have to make entrusting a, you know, a medical staff and trusting your coach who promised your mama t take care of you for the one to four years that you were on campus. Yeah. It's tough. It is tricky because you wanna play for your team. And that's what you train, right? I mean, we're we're conditioned as athletes that play through it not only to play through pain, but play to everything every kind of injury. The Cam reddish thing with Duke really surprised me and more because of coach K's reaction. He at the at the end of the game he acted like he had no idea that there was some issue with his starting. Yeah. His his knee. Let's hear from coach K on that very topic. We have the audio right here. This is this is this is coach K in the post game press conference about the the time in which they learned about cameras being out. We didn't know until right before the game that he was not going to be able to play. He went out and just had something wrong with his knee. Couldn't. And we didn't find out until right before the game strange to say, the least, Pat. Yeah. That that I was a little bit weary. What was going on there? And then you heard Zion Williamson comment about how he? He had talked with with Cam reddish about it. And so here's what I'll say about. That is good for Cam reddish. Okay. Because he recognized something that he didn't feel good about playing. And I've always said this like I had an injury where I played through it. And I was stupid. I was absolutely dumb. I wish somebody came in and said man, don't don't don't try to play to that. 'cause it's gonna end up hurting you later on in your career in an end up doing it. So these injuries are going to impact the chew Mojo KiKi for Auburn. You mentioned that he's their best player. He's an NBA player. I don't think he'll come back. PJ Washington is if he doesn't play last night Houston wins. So the impact of these guys especially the the best players on each team. Even Michigan state. They had an injury to Lankford early in the Nick ward, look like he heard his hand. But as we all know in sports, sometimes it's a health contest. And when you get later on the season everyone's down with a little bit of this some type of injury some of them you can play through. But I would tell everybody that if it is something. Now, these kids have to think about ten years down the line because their body is what is going to make them some money. You can do like it's about miles on an athlete. And sometimes if you try to push it a little bit too far for the wrong reasons, it's gonna you're gonna end up paying maybe not a month or two months or three months, but you're talking five years ten years down the road. It could affect your body. Rachel before we get to your thoughts on this. You mentioned PJ Washington, Pat. This was him in the post game press conference. He is dealing with a foot injury. And missed the last two games. He came off the bench told John cale Perry that he wanted to get in there. And he was the difference in the game down the stretch. Cute a huge block and one situation along with Tyler heroes shop this is PJ Washington after the. Game on how he dealt with his foot injury yesterday. Oh, yeah. I took some painful for the game started hurting in the second half. But I had a tough and do it. And then again started coming up, and then everybody was pushing me around. So I was just trying to get a mature law. So I'm definitely going back to get some treatment after this and trying to get a good night's sleep guys making real life decisions before a big time game a big time school rates. You think that helps his his his what do you guys think? Rachel, and do you think that helps? NBA teams in in in his stock and how he was able to play through that. You mean, the fact that he actually got out and play through the pain, right? Right. I don't know. I don't know. I mean, I I saw another quote from PJ where he said he suffered through the game. That's like when I when I saw that. I thought okay now, we're we the pressure that you put on the athlete, and I'm and I'm not a former athlete even though I like to think that I'm one in my head. I mean when I when I hear someone players say that c o KiKi go down and with such a gruesome injury. I feel like we put so much pressure on these athletes was there's so many different opinions coming in should you sit out and and protect yourself or do you follow the word teammate to the utmost degree and you play for your team? No matter what in suffer through the pain. You've gotta look more than just the present. I'm sorry. I don't care if that's selfish to say that you have to look forward you have to protect yourself. And I don't think that we at the end of the day should knock any athlete for doing that. So I do respect a camera tish who set out during the game. I hope that PJ Washington takes care of himself. And I hope that he does what's best for himself at this point. Because you've given yourself to the team all season. You know, you can't you can't just come down to this moment. And then when I look at what happened with oh KiKi. My goodness. So go back to your original question. Pat. I don't know if this makes makes helps their stock when it comes to the NBA. I don't honestly, I don't think they care about that. They're going to care about how healthy you are. When you enter the draft and what you can do for them as an NBA player. I don't think they're gonna say well that was so commendable that he suffered through that paying took some painkillers and had a good night's rest and play for his team. Speaking of your KiKi, Bruce, Pearl has some comments about the situation. He said he feared the worst case myth and Charles Barkley talked about it during the broadcast and said hoping that it was more of a scare than a tear. But we've seen any knee injuries before. And that one looked like the typical knee injury that kind of keeps the guy out for very very long time. Interesting decisions to say, the least and some of these kids have to make going forward. Eighty eight say ESPN eight seven to nine three seven seven six is the phone if you want to jump. Into the conversation. The college basketball season is winding down. "When you talk about Duke, it's all been about this year three names in terms of players because obviously coach K is always part of the equation Zion. Williamson RJ Barrett and Cam reddish, someone no the had an exceptional. ACC tournament and kept making play after play. Was trae Jones who's also a freshman and trade Jones. He averaged nine points per game this year and five point three assists against Syracuse said fifteen North Carolina eleven and it was impossible to miss him against Florida state yesterday and that seventy three sixty three victory. He had eighteen points. He was eight to fourteen from the field and the offense numbers are our special with what you see he made such a big play getting over the screen while the game is coming to a close Duke UNC. And played really good defense as I'm watching the play over again containing Kobe white. Was right within the entire time. White misses the shot and Duke Vance's beating UNC, and that's something. We were talking about yesterday. We would love love love love me personally to see Duke and UNC for the first time ever in the NC double A tournament, and they could both be number one seeds potentially. The pending on what happens with Tennessee. What the committee does wiccans aga-? So it depends. Would you get them on the same side of the bracket? Probably not. If they're on different sides of the bracket, though, imagine them beat it up to the national championship game. That would absolutely be sick. When you look at the coaches in the NC double A tournament this year. I'll go to the ones that I really love coach K with Duke. How can't you like Virginia with Tony Bennett? That's a guy that I'll be rooting for. Because of that team losing to UNBC last year is a sixteen seater him handling it was so much class. John B line at Michigan. Continues to have success year after year. A guy like Mark view. Is impossible not to root for a j. Right. One of the best coaches in the country to national championships at Villanova. I believe he's been to three final fours at Villanova. When you had Scottie Reynolds. That other one where he had that runner up against Pitt. You also have Leonard Hamilton with FSU. We know the story there where last year. They were down by four. He elected not the foul against Michigan. I know John Calipari is a polarizing figure I love coach gal. Tom Izzo with Michigan state. Hey, the month of March is synonymous with Tommaso ever last three years. They've not got past the first weekend. Do you have a little extra pressure on Michigan state Kelvin Sampson with Houston? The redemption story. With what has gone on in the past with his violations now is Houston team. With only two losses UNC with ROY Williams. How can't you? Not like where we're Williams, Tennessee. Rick Barnes member Barnes, a long time. Coach of Texas now is Tennessee potentially being a number one seed, I like crispier with Texas Tech. And here's a fun story line. And here's the story of a program. That's going to get a lot of attention. And it's a coach that you may have never heard of and he's gone through a whole lot and you'll root for a guy like this. And that's the Old Dominion coach in Jeff Jones. As Jeff Jones, and we send our best to he's battling prostate cancer. His team. With him on the sidelines coaching, and you got extremely emotional as he should. NC double A tournament bid. That's the team. And they'll be a big time underdog as you know in the first round, but that's a story line. That's what makes this part of the NCAA tournament so special rehab, a coach who's undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. And he's leaving his team being a great example. Of a man and stole coaching and getting the most out of his team, and he was extremely emotional after that victory the other day, and you see the confetti falling him crying into the towel. That is a feel good story for Jeff Jones the head coach of Old Dominion Old Dominion basketball's made headlines with that story. Football team also made headlines last year as well. Four and eight this year the football team is sort to your own three. Then they beat Virginia Tech forty nine to thirty five. I remember that game. "Wrapping up here just a little while ago with Duke beating Florida state seventy three to sixty three heard a little earlier from Leonard Hamilton, and certainly the Seminoles head coach has a lot to be proud of with the way that his team played down the stretch this year. Trying to get past the injury bug that bit the Knowles early on on route to winning eight consecutive games, which was a school record Florida state in line to had a school record for wins at twenty seven and seven right now hats off to Florida state and what that bunch got accomplished during the second half of the season. Among the nation's best teams right number twelve this week entering the tournament. And of course, the four seed in the ACC Duke twenty nine and five the three seat in the ACC tournament wins the crowd, and we are just now getting word that the blue devils. Mike chef ski are getting ready to hold court so to speak in the post game press conference. So we'll carry some what makes you ski. I'm guessing John Williamson the MVP of this event will have to say as well as a few other players possibly again for Duke all the scoring came from the starters. Williamson Twenty-one eighteen for Jones seventeen for Barrett. Eleven for Cam reddish and six for delory, Jack, white Jordan gold wire Alex O'Connell all played and between those three or. Among those three only gold wire attempted a field goal. He was oh for one. So Duke gets the win. It's twenty nine th of the season in Florida state's at twenty seven and seven and we again continue to wait for the blue devils in the post game press conference. It is a quiet lull back behind closed doors right now in front of those microphones. So again, we'll continue to monitor that situation and bring you those comments as soon as we get word that the head coach and players get to the post game media session. Seventy three sixty three the final here in Charlotte again to continue to update things on the North Carolina farm bureau, scoreboard, other automatic bids. That went out today from smaller conferences, North Carolina. Central wins the maniacs. Fifty to forty seven over Norfolk state for Mont triumphs over UNBC who one.

"You know, he's Cape. That. But you don't often see, but that's a team that again. Cam reddish only had seven points. And so not that every. Five star has to be a guy that's going to go for double figures. But when you look at the way, they played you do see that Barrett and Williamson took a good shots. I mean Barrett was eighty two sixteen I think that Williamson made him better because of his shot selection of controlling the defensive is, but they weren't good from three point range. They were seven of twenty three they turn the ball over eighteen times. And and that was that wasn't enough to make it a scary situation for them. But it could be tonight. And can I say something I thought Eric made a really good point in his and look Zion. Williamson is a terrific player. He is deservedly ACC player of the year deservedly in the conversation already been named by sporting news as a national player of the year for Carolina dukes about more than one guy. And if he s fifty points tonight and Duke Winston this one chapter of Carolina Duke will be about him. But there there's individual chapters of this rivalry better about the individual. Players. And no one guy is bigger than what these two teams have been about for so long. And that goes one about Eric when he was playing and one about Michael Jordan when he was playing and one about Christian Leitner one about Danny ferry whoever you want to pick. It's not one guy is what both these teams have been able to do for so long. And I think that's part of what gets under your skin. If you're a tarheel about the coverage of this rivalry when he is placed into the spotlight as well. So terrific player. He's was spectacular last night. Clearly going to have a terrific career. But it it's more about it's about more than just one guy. No question about it and strangely enough. Carolina goes for a three game sweep with the blue devils. And that hasn't happened going back to the mid one thousand nine hundred seventy so it's been awhile since that's happened. Then again, that's a big if if it's going to happen, but still Carolina's put themselves in a pretty good spot with what they've accomplished already this year. As we go to a break. There is a quick way that you could save some money, and that's by switching to. Geico. Geico dot com and in fifteen minutes, you could save fifteen percent or more on car insurance..

What North Carolina's sweep of Duke really means

"Bid the ACC game yesterday the Duke North Carolina game. There was an interesting stat. Interesting to me, at least that I gave on Friday with Chris black, and it was that North Carolina had played Duke eight times under ROY Williams in the final game of the regular season with first place in the ACC at stake for North Carolina. Either outright first place or a share now Virginia one yesterday over Louisville. So North Carolina needed a win to get a share a first place in the ACC now in those eight. Times in North Carolina play Duke in the final game of the regular season. Trying to get first place in the ACC tarheels were eight no with games in five zero seven zero eight oh nine eleven twelve sixteen and seventeen. Now, they're nine and go after North Carolina get seventy nine to seventy win over Duke yesterday the blue devils again without Zion. Williamson and Duke struggling shooting from three, and that's why a lot of the experts are not picking Duke to win the NC double A tournament. They were eight of thirty two from three last night. Now, it'll be a little bit different. When I Williamson is back RJ Barrett with twenty six points last night. Cam reddish added twenty three points the tar heels share the ACC regular season title with Virginia's. I mentioned Virginia had a win earlier the evening against Louisville. Cody white, the freshman out of North Carolina. He was all kinds of fun to watch. He had twenty one points Zion. Williamson. Oh did practice while the other day John was out with Waddle and Silvy show on Friday, if you get a chance go back and listen to that the podcast at ESPN, Chicago dot com. You can listen to the podcast of the shows. Zion. Williams had a good practice. Some people thought he might have played last night. But after the game it appeared coach K said Williamson we'll be ready for Thursday's ACC tournament which gets underway. So it's going to be all kinds of fun to watch and see how Virginia North Carolina Duke doing the upcoming ACC

"Zion? William I think you'll get three or four hall of famers outta high school. But I don't think like Zion. Is there anybody in the pipeline? Are there any young guys? We know the name of maybe it was the names. I am. But we've known the name Zion for a long time. We didn't know how good he was. We just knew he was this dunking machine. Right. And that's that was the big question. More going into college. Does he have a jumper? Now. He's not afraid to shoot. He's not a knockdown jumper jump shooter. But you know, he might be able to make that better because you have to respect him go into the hoop. He's going to have to get better at maybe not three point shots. But just that fifteen to eighteen feet where you're just you know, you're knocking down jumpers. That's that's important. But I do like his feel his ball handling footwork. He is a willing passer a good passer. It feels like he's celebrates with his teammates. I I don't get a feeling that there's any diva in his game. RJ Barrett may be a little more. It feels like he wants the ball. He wants to score that's really important to him Zion. It feels like that. He's just trying to you know, what what do I need to do each time down the floor. What do I need to do? Whether it's offensive or defensively, I'm still waiting for Cam reddish. Like is he really going to be a top three pick top five pick. I'm not sure. He has the build to be a great player to be able to you know, outside and inside and transition, you know, but I maybe with those other two he's sort of stuck. I wonder if he's glad he went to Duke. Or would he have preferred to have go someplace else where he would have been the star? And I wonder about that. But certain players are wired in the way that, you know, they're okay deferring Klay Thompson. And some of it's learned Kevin love was the star in Minnesota. And then you have to rewire to be the second or third option. Chris Bosh was the man in Toronto. Then he had to rewire to be that man the third option in Miami. And it's really hard to do Klay Thompson, you're the star in college. And then you go to the Golden State Warriors, but you're sort of on par with his kids Steph curry and then Draymond green. You know, we're we're all kind of in it together a little bit. And then all of a sudden, you realize, you know, stuffs cutting steps MVP. And then clay has to realize that. Okay. I'm I'm number two. Now, he's number three. So that it takes something special to be that is going to go to the Knicks. And if he goes to the Knicks, let's say they won the lottery, and you bring in Kevin Durant is he okay being that kind of player where you defer, and I think he is. But I think he's under. He's learning that now at Duke, which is another reason why I think it was really important for him to go to every game on national TV every game scrutinized the reporters covering your team. You also are playing for coach K you're playing with other players who are going to be top picks egos all of that one and done. And I think that this is really benefited him. So when people say, well, what should he do shut it down? I have no issue if he wants to shut it down as I said yesterday if he wants to shut it down for the rest of the regular season. I have no issue with that. He's the one that makes the decision not us. You know, once I go back to what I said yesterday. We look at opt for opportunities where we can tell. Oh, you are agenda. And that's what happened when Xilin went down. Everybody had their agenda of. Yep. See they should be paid. Okay..

"That's great exposure for these kids. I think a bigger picture that's lost in all of this Zion. Williamson getting injured is what happened to the rest of the team at home. If RJ Barrett is the second best player in college basketball. You gotta seize the moment. Is do a one man team. I didn't think so Cam reddish, your top five pick top three pick gotta step in even coach K when I'm watching that team in nobody's going to the hoop. And I said yesterday they can be knocked off in the tournament. If you make them shoot threes. Now if Zion Williamson plays that changes, everything, obviously. But even if he's playing and they're not getting to the hoop and they're shooting threes. Then they're going to get knocked off in the turnament because they're not good enough to rely on that and North Carolina. They played well I'd like to have seen Zion play because North Carolina was going to give them a far better game than I think people thought I love the pace of play with North Carolina. But we all know it was a different game. Here's ROY Williams the North Carolina head coach on Zion. Williamson going out with an injury beyond everybody. Be. When the big fella goes out of the game changes a lot of stuff for them. Zion. Williamson never seen anything like him. And that was a huge blow for them in having that happened during the course of the game. You don't have time to prepare for it. So hated that part of it because I think he's such a wonderful kid. But that was a huge blow for them at that time. There's no question. Yeah. But I still watched and it didn't feel like there was any game plan. There. There was there was not a lot of movement with Duke last night, and you had to players who had all their assists. That can't happen. Yes. I understand the philosophy that you have to shoot your way out of a slump. But you know, what if you're a good enough shooter, you can shoot your way out of a slant as an awful lot of three pointers being chucked up there that like nobody wants to take it to the hoop just to get a little offense gone. Yeah. That's the difference. Because a great shooter should continue to shoot. If you're not a great shooter. Maybe you shouldn't continue to shoot Benchley. Yeah. The odds eventually have to. Yeah. I mentioned that Nike should embrace this and how they can embrace. This was I on Williamson. Let's say they signed him when he goes to the NBA. What I would do is. I'd have a laboratory, and I would have I I would Zaylon proof my Nikes, and I would have maybe somebody of not Zion doing this. But maybe you get you build some machine or you build some. Some mannequin that is same size dimensions. So use Zion proof though shoes. Because when you're making these shoes, you're not making these shoes to go. You know, what can this survive a six seven.

"I'm trying to go to bed trying to get some rest trying to make sure I can get some sleep. So the note pretty when I sit next to the to you know, global wasn't going to let that happen in a game. That was a blowout in a game. That looked like it was over Louisville had it in hand Cam reddish made a game tying three pointer with one twenty eight and the go ahead free throws with fourteen seconds remaining Duke with a massive comeback. They come back in the second half and beat Louisville. Seventy one sixty nine nine thirteen left in the game. Duke is trailing fifty nine thirty six it's a twenty three point deficit, and they go on a thirty five to ten run in that in that time. They had no turnover. Louisville is nine turnovers are hitting everything. They're getting steals are getting to the line. Unbelievable. The greatest comeback. Coach K seems like he's been coaching forever. The biggest deficit comeback in his coaching career. So a game. I thought was over. And you're right. You're like, okay. At least I could turn this off. But no, you can't turn it off. Because they're starting to come back. And you're like could they could they and then all of a sudden, they did it was one of those where if you were thinking about not off it was giving you every reason to want to do it. You see that deficit? You see them open up that half two of seven towns shooting. You're like, you know, what just the same way that when do plate Virginia the other night in their hitting everything from three maybe this just isn't your shots aren't falling. And do can vary embarrassing fashion would have to pick up the pieces not so fast, my friend. Well, you mentioned Virginia. I was I was thinking Virginia had to be pulling their hair out. Like, this is exactly what Virginia was hoping for their game plan allowed for do couldn't hit anything in the first half. Conversely, though, I will say Louisville in the second half got lazy and shot selection. They were throwing bombs they didn't need to throw up. And then once dukes started their to come back. It just felt like Louisville didn't have an answer. And at that point momentum was real one of the interesting things, obviously, you wonder in these situations is what coach K has to say to the superstar young guys on this team Zion. Tyus Battle's 32 Lead Syracuse to Shocking Upset Win over Zion Williamson, Duke

"A lot going on in the world of sports. We'll get into more dominance from James harden, a decision that gets pretty easy for the defending Super Bowl champions in my mind at this point a decision yesterday did seem to be a no brainer. That for some reason. I felt like we treated like a lot more than it was. That still has plenty of drama left to unfold for one major NFL prospect. But I. Holy hell Zion. Williamson I understand that Duke lost. I understand that. And if you missed it last night. Syracuse went on the road upset Duke ninety five ninety one in overtime. We got a little free basketball, which for those of us watching the bachelor last night. There is nothing like watching Colton going camping with the girls and the bachelor house and seeing simultaneously. Oh, I'm getting free basketball to this was all of my worlds coming together in the absolute best ways possible. Now for the Duke side of things I understand Duke lost. But when you look at the circumstances around why it becomes not only understandable. But I think it's never excusable. I want to say that right now Duke is too talented across the board the guys that they had left on the court. We're still good enough to where you have to get this done at home. And I say left on the court because part of the story for Duke last night going into the game. Cam reddish, one of the stars in their team missing with illness. Not in an available for them in the game. And then about five and a half minutes in trae Jones their star guard a guy who's a defensive juggernaut for them and a huge catalyst for them. Offensively leaves the game with what Mike chef ski described after as a shoulder sprain. It's a shoulder sprain. And we'll put out because I'm not gonna do medical stuff. But it's a sprain. There's no break, although he was in a lot of pain. He's a kid that the toughest kid right away. I don't know if my car broke bonus broken, you know, and it was that it was hurting that badly, but it's a sprain. And that was my worry. The I I saw that you thought it might have been a broken collarbone, which would have been devastating for this do blue devils team that listen the proof is in the pudding like the when he is on and off the court for them just within the body of this game be five minutes and change that he was on the court during this game Duke point differential, plus eight with him on the court field goal percentage. Fifty five point six percent with him off the court the point differential, minus twelve thirty six point six percent field goal percentage. They suffer offensively they suffer defensively where he's one of the best, man. Demand defenders in the ACC. And so that is going to affect you always said when it comes to injury. Usually we talk about it with the timing going into the season. At different points of the year, injuries are going to affect you differently. And so if you're a star player that gets injured at the beginning of the season ally. Last Joseph the Boston Celtics, for example, Gordon Hayward being injured at the beginning of the season. You spend the entire rest of the year. Figuring out how you adjust without Gordon Hayward. Kyrie Irving being injured right before the playoffs. All of a sudden, that's a major adjustment for a guy who has been a huge part of your offense. You might grow that down to a single game. And Cam rightish, who you know is not going to be available to you. That night is one way you adjust the game plan. Trey Jones going down in the body of that game is another completely when you have to now adjust without that guy on the court for you without the certainly the encore leadership that he brings you and all that production, and so the energy shifted as one might say. To Zion Williamson at RJ Barrett. Who took who scored fifty eight combined points last night the second most by Duke freshman duo under Mike shefty, but it wasn't quite enough. And I say all this again is a backdrop to discredit Syracuse for going in there and getting a win. And Lord knows we have become accustomed to Syracuse teams throughout the course of time underachieving during the regular season finding a way to make a run that alternately lands them in a Sweet Sixteen type season. That's the capability always exists with a Syracuse team. But man, you even heard Jim pay Heim after this who as usual was lighting up the sidelines in a way that the internet sopped up and enjoy tremendously even Jim boeheim after this kind of understood like man, there was a lot working against Duke. And we are still the team as Twitter would remind you last night big night for Old Dominion Twitter. Because ODU Twitter was reminding you the transit of property can be ineffective you so choose and college basketball, and this is a Syracuse team that. Lost to Old Dominion earlier this year, and you can kind of hear their head coach wearing that dukes. Great team. They don't have to other key guys. That's the breaks of the game. Sometimes. Those two guys the whole game. But you know, it's just one of those things. I watched one tape white may eight threes one game. I think seventy a lot. He couldn't tonight. That's just the way the game is sometimes I am. I asked Michael junior here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app. Duke talk about not being able to buy one from three that was the other thing there were a lot of specific jokes made about the sexual prowess of the bachelor over the course of last night. Those were only outnumbered by Duke missed three point shots in a game where they went nine for forty three. Again, a game in which one of their best offense players out. They went nine for forty three. The most three point field goal attempts in school history. Duke now becoming the fifth AP number one team to lose at home to an unranked team in the last ten seasons. So. An outlier in a lot of ways. Again, you look at all the things surrounding this performance. I'm inclined to look at these and not excuse a loss. But understand the circumstances around and say, all right. I'm not going to sound the alarms yet for do. Because this is still a Duke team that again man you saw what Zion is capable in. The midst of all this for a team that has struggled this season against own. We know no one really runs it better than Syracuse. In a lot of ways Zion still thirty five points in a loss. He goes thirty five and ten in this game. He becomes the first major conference player. With thirty five ten four and a game since Kevin Durant. Did it back in two thousand and seven and you saw for all the talk. We had about on a while back. I want to be known as more than just a dunker. You saw that on display last night because him going down and being that differentiating force in the paint. And that's where in the past by the passed earlier this season when you look at the other loss to zag and the things that undermine them in that game with teams clogged up, the paint, this outfit tend to have a bit of trouble. And you saw them do a better job of that last night. They just couldn't hit shots. Like, it's we always hear about the NBA to make making mislead couldn't hit shots your one of your best players and a guy who initiate your offense. And your defense goes out within the first five minutes of the game last night. And all of a sudden the plan changes. Now, what it means going forward becomes entirely different and Jay Bilas ESPN college basketball analyst pointed that out that long term for Duke. The worry. I think any team that loses a point guard like that is going to have some issues and.

"I mean, seriously what the hell is that what just happened? What was that? I don't know if that was a block shot or this guy just ripped it right out of the sky. And then started the fast break and had the assist to finish it off. What exactly was that? I don't even have time while the highlights. So let me just say this Zairean did not come to take part. He came to take over and worse yet for the do caters. He's not alone far from it. He was not even the highest score on that team last night that honor goes to RJ BARRET. He had thirty three to go along with six assists in all Cam reddish did was put up twenty two and had four steals. I mean, we're talking about the three best players going in next year's draft. I would never compare any team to Alabama football. But last night Duke basketball was Alabama football in blue shorts. There were that Donald dominant. They got one hundred with seven and a half minutes left in the game. They put up one hundred with seven and a half minutes left and that was not some body bag game either that was not a by game against eight directional school. That was against Kentucky, the bluest of the blue bloods, and that left a black eye and neuroscience. Yes, I'm giving you the final score yet. Have not even mentioned the final score. And that's no accident because it was brutal. It was graphic nature. Duke one eighteen Kentucky eighty four that was the alleged number four team in the country beating the number two team in the country by thirty four and it could have been so much worse. Duke could've named its score. And they did it against another elite team. They did it against the second ranked team. So this is not about national title. I mean at this point this is who they are. If this is really who they are. And this is who or how they're going to play. You're not going to beat these guys. Your best won't be their best your best might not be there. Very good. This to me isn't even about national title. It's about something potentially bigger than that. I know it's only one game. But it was a game against Kentucky. And by bigger than that. I mean, this this is about the most entertaining jaw dropping team since Anthony Davis was running with Kentucky, maybe even further back than that. It's only one game injuries can happen. But this crew can be conic. I aren't even Ionic like I'm talking about fab five transcendent like that. I'm talking about Larry Johnson's UNLV teams. And that's the thing. It's not about handing them title right now. This could be even bigger than a title, keep this in mind, the fab five never wanna title, but their legendary their icon ick there I honor. And they never wanted. All this is what this Duke team can be a team that gives you one of those where were you when feelings every time they hit the floor. So if you're one of those people who does not watch college basketball until March. You want change that plant stat because you're going to miss something amazing one game in in Zion. Literally, he's one of the greatest things I've seen in college basketball in years in years and was not even their leading score last night. Mercy is right. Not a word I use very often. But damn mercy. They were amazing last night. One eight hundred six three six eight six eight six and once again that was not some by game against eight directional school that was against Kentucky. That was John cale Peres worse loss as a coach. So if you hate Duke, it's going to be a long long year, one eight hundred six three six eight six eight six hit me up. Remember, I've got crews Pentagon in the house. He will be in studio. Next segment. Other things today suck levian bell. Yes. I did say yesterday. I'm tired of this. I don't care how it ends as long as it ends. I would love to say that my update today's to tell you that it's over there's resolution there's closure he reported. He's not to play this year. None of the above. We still do not know. But there was a sighting and he lit Twitter on fire again yesterday because he got in a local run five on five in Pittsburgh, fitness. Is that how it's going to be is that how that's going to go apparently has not done yet. Hot stove league. We'll talk some baseball. Am I here get into Bryce Harper? And the fact that he turned down he quote, aggressive offer from the NATs and the NATs took it off the table. This is not surprise me. At all. I'd much rather talk about what the Mets are doing. I'll have that for you later on. Dez Bryant signing with the saints. My reaction to that later on. Very quickly some reaction off the top Email number one, James. I don't hate Duke. Here is what I do hate one floor slappers to flopper three staffers that goes sprinting across the court TV timeouts four dudes who trip others on purpose. Five junk punchers, six rats. I.

"I think some fireworks were going off there. Let's see if we can get Doug back. He can finish his thought there. Here's something for you. Zion. Williamson will appear in thirty one nationally televised games this year. The number one pick in the draft de'andre eight will appear in eight nationally televised games. The exposure you get for your brand. It's still great for college basketball to have that platform for these kids. Zion. Williamson should be by all accounts able to play in the NBA RJ Barrett should be playing in the NBA. You know, Cam reddish, but is going to be thirty one nationally televised games this year Doug is back with us. So you're saying that Kansas is the victim. Well, no, I didn't say that. Did that's what was said? Yeah. That's that's what the court said. Yeah. So. No, I think it's it's really going to be hard for the NCAA to make some case against Kansas. And and get Bill fired. If the courts are saying that they're the victim. You know what I mean? That's that's just a hard one. Yeah. But Bill self is not a victim. If it's his staff who staff member, and you got a kid who's sitting out right now because they're sort of waiting to whatever kind of. The only reason why he's not playing is. They're worried if they play him, and then all of a sudden he's found in eligible, then they lose these games here. But do you think Bill self should have been should be coaching Kansas right now? Yes. I do think it should be catching campus. Okay. I do think he knew. What was going on with paying paying a player? Do I think I? I think he knew guys were getting taken care of. And he didn't wanna know. I think that's generally the way the way it works, the differences that Patino dean, it feels like arranged for everything to take place where it self. You know, didn't wanna know. And just you guys get it done. However, you guys do whatever you guys do we're gonna recruit the kid. And and and there's other you know, other guys handle that. Well, worked for Jimmy V, Mike this. Yeah. It worked for John wooden. You know, like, I don't wanna know. But boy, I keep getting these great players showing up at UCLA sure different era. But yes, absolutely. I mean, look luau cinders flying home to New York every weekend during his freshman year because he was homesick and neither John wooden. Didn't know that back in the day is is is laughable. Look, I, you know. I mean, what does it say about my? She chefs go, do I think Duke does it generally the right way. Do. But I also like, okay. So if other people were willing to do whatever it takes to get Zion. Williamson and the last second he changed his mind to go to Duke was it just because it's Duke or was it because you know, it was because Nike had a hand in it. Right. That anyone anyone with a brain suspects that? So, and I don't think I don't think makes you shefty is on the phone with these guys arranging these these things to get the deal. I also think a lot of this is there's a lotta hearsay here. Right. It's like it's like with your staff. If you ask them how many women they've been with new life. Right. Take it and cut it in thirds, or you know, with mclovin coveted eight, that's that's like college basketball, high school basketball, and what you're getting all I got paid. I ended up getting an eighth of or didn't get any of what you suspected you were going to get. So there's a lot of hearsay and talk and a lawyer saying something, but the fact the Curtiss Taliban assistant Kansas is on tape saying, hey, we gotta do what it takes to get. This thing done that doesn't indict Kansas. But it does make you think Kansas was might have been willing to do some things or rain some things to be done. But there is no direct link to Bill self. So I think he skates on it. In addition to the fact that the courts did find them a victim. Yeah. I know what goes on. I just think it's right in front of us now. And I don't think anybody cares. I don't I think college basketball started. I don't think anybody cares about this whatsoever. It's like, okay. Yeah. You got a kid, and you gotta pay him. All right. But. Well, I think I think the thing the thing that's interesting is how little actually goes to any of these kids. There's always everybody always has their hands out. And there's layer and the kid just kids most of them. They just wanna go play ball. That's it. They just want to play ball, and they just want to be on TV, and they want to wear the Goodyear and they wanna play for good coach, and they wanna play the national for national championship. And they wanna go to the NBA. And and this is a this. We're talking a top five percent or one percent of the actual kids. They're playing college. It's a very small percentage that had their hands out. And and usually the kids don't have their hands out. It's the parents or the handler thank you dog. Great to talk to you again. We appreciate your time is always. That's a godly man somehow work the down at sex life into that. Yeah. Thanks for sticking up for me. I was running out of time. I didn't have time to stick up for you. Yeah. Well, just ask my girlfriend from. Highschool dogs talking about. So uncalled for cutting Nate's take a shot. I had an imaginary girlfriend my freshman year at eastern Kentucky. Oh, yeah. I did that. I did. Yeah. Because you know, my friends were having fun in college. And I wasn't like I just wasn't a good time. And I I I was not playing got put on the junior varsity. I was angry. I didn't go to class. You know? It's just it was bad bad. And then my friends has any how you doing? I said man, and I'm killing it here girlfriend. She's a cheerleader from Louisville. And I was like I didn't have a cheerleader girlfriend from Louisville. I didn't even know it. Sure. Leading girlfriend from Louisville a girl from Louisville. Yeah. Yeah. She's a cheerleader at Ballard high school. By props put pompoms on the floor. So when they came to visit the dorm rate than just maybe it looks like there's a girl there. Okay. You know, what they did at eastern Kentucky that you could have visitation for a girl to come to your room. But it was I think on the weekend, and it was only for a couple of hours, and you had to keep the door open and one foot on the floor at all times. The public university. One foot on the floor at all times. What happens in alarm goes up? What happens if you don't, you know, you had RA's the resident assistant like they'd be walking up and down the homelands her as horrible. Yeah. Not that. I had anybody in my room. That's like living at home in having your mother, poppy in every two minutes, offering milk and cookies I could have been you fritzie, really could have all it was missing. Is my mom had the excuse that I was living at home, no privacy. I know I know. All right. We'll take a break. We'll check in with the Lakers coming up nineteen after the hour. This is the Dan Patrick show. Yes. What am I get about it, Dan? I'm going to tell you about discover Jack a lot of things don't. Yes, I do every day, you're checking emails social media. You know what I do not check seat?.
